Asupreme gourmet mix of subtle flavours
By JOHN COSGROVE
Arlyn Thompson, of Rangiora Bakery, is
ecstatic.
Her bakery skills have won her the
Bakels NZ Supreme Pie Award.
Arlyn’s gourmet meat entry —aslowcooked
Sumatrastyle beef pie —isa
combination of subtle flavours of
Southeast Asia, carefully crafted to suit
the Kiwi palette in abalanced sweet and
sour curryflavoured filling.
The pie had earlier taken out the Gold
Award in the gourmet section of the
competition, as did Arlyn’s Mince and
Gravy pie entry.
Arlyn is the secondonly Supreme
female baker to scoop the top award in
the country, and Rangiora Bakery is now
the first South Islandbased baker to
pocket the top award in the
competition's26year history.
Ashocked Arlyn says she was
overjoyed by the award.
In charge of new product development
at Rangiora Bakery, Arlyn says it is great
for the bakery, ‘‘my team and all those
who helped us’’.
Based on Malaysian influences, Arlyn
constructed the pie in layers, starting
with abase of twohour long slowcooked
chuck tender beef encompassing
flavours of lemongrass, galangal and
ginger, plus adash of secret Southeast
Asian spices and Coconut cream.
On top of that is alayer of smoked
cheese sauce capped off with
caramelised onion.
It’s all presented in alovely pastry pie
case, created by senior baker Kenny
Chambers.
Arlyn and Rangiora Bakery general
manager Frank Janssen also
acknowledged the support of Sriamorn
Reavill from Lemongrass in Loburn,
who helped them with some of the other
flavours.
NZ Bakels managing director Brent
Kersel says this year there was alot
more bakers giving the gourmet meat
category agowith entry numbers
making it the third largest category to be
judged.
‘‘At the supreme judging round, there
were many impressed expressions on
the judges’ faces, and we knew it was
Supreme champion pie ... Pie maker supremo Arlyn Thompson, of Rangiora Bakery, with her winning slowcooked Sumatrastyle beef
going to be atight final until the last pie
in the gourmet meat entry went through
for tasting.’’
‘‘Nice’’, was how celebrity chef judge
Sid Sahrawat summed it up as he
finished his sample of Arlyn’s pie.
‘‘So beautiful to eat. The flavours are
so well balanced and the pastry and
tender meat are aperfect comfort
combination.
‘‘On acold winter’s night, that’s the
pie you want to eat.’’
Mr Kersel says right from the very first
round of the gourmet meat judging,
there were some really standout pies
coming through with exceptional pastry
making it achallenge to score with an
abundance of flavour innovation.
‘‘We had smoked trevally with peas,
carrots, beans and corn; Mexican
venison; beef brisket with beer, cheese
and jalapeno; spicy prawn; beef
moussaka and even an oldfashioned
mutton pie.’’
He says there was so much variety, but
for him, ‘‘you can’t beat agood mince
and cheese pie’’.
The owners of Rangiora’s Southside
Health medical clinic, Dr Bevan Rogers
and his wife, Anne, the practice manager,
have sold their business.
However, the new owner is likely to be
familiar to their patients. Nurse
Practitioner,Anna Davidson, of Rangiora,
who began working for Bevan and Anne
soon after moving to Rangiora from
Southland with her partner and young
son three years ago.
She takes over ownership of the clinic
next Tuesday (August 6).
‘‘We are really fortunate to have Dr
Rogers remain on with us,’’Anna says.
‘‘I have always been interested in GP
ownership and with an increasing amount
of corporate ownership, where profit and
expansion are key focuses, Ifeel there is
areal need to preserve family practices,’’
she says.
‘‘That allows the practice to ensure the
wellbeing of the patient,community and
the staff remain at the centre of decisions,
not maximising profit and meeting
investors' needs.’’
Anna loves the team at Southside
Health.
‘‘They make going to work enjoyable,
and we have fantastic patients.
‘‘In asmaller practice you get to know
them well.
‘‘One of the nicest things of general
practice is seeing the generations come
through. It is areal privilege.’’
Bevan and Anne established the clinic
in 2008 at Rangiora’s Charles Street,
before developing the current premises at
10F Newnham Street in 2013.
‘‘Being aGPisthe most interesting job
in the world,’’ Bevan says.
‘‘I love seeing people every day. Some
people Ihave known for decades and
others Iammeeting for the first time.
‘‘It keeps my brain active and its
wonderful to be helping people.’’
He trained at Otago Medical School.
‘‘Some of my training was in Dunedin
and some in Christchurch. Iwas ahouse
surgeon in Timaru for two years.’’
Anne has been practice manager at
Southside Health since it was established
16 years ago.
She shares the same passion as Bevan
—‘‘to help our patients and to look after
our staff in away that was important to us.
We have found working together really
beneficial to both our roles’’, she says.
Although working in general practice
has always had challenges ``the key is to
adapt, adapt and adapt again to whatever
hurdles are put in front of us’’, they say.
Anna says some changes will occur
when she takes over.
‘‘We have anew female GP starting in
September from France, Dr Lucile
Blanc,’’ she says.
Renee Storer who has been with
Southside Health for 13 years is taking on
the role of practice manager.
The big change coming for patients will
be apatient portal.
‘‘This app allows patients to request
repeat regular medications,book
appointments on line, and see their blood
results with comments from their
practitioner about the plan or advice,’’
Anna says.
She is also planning to introduce a
private service in cosmetic medicine from
November 2024.
Santa is on the move in Kaiapoi
By JOHN COSGROVE
Kaiapoi’s popular Santa Parade and
Christmas Carnival have moved.
They are both still being held on the
the usual date the first Saturday in
December but their location has
shifted to amore suitable site.
The Kaiapoi Santa Parade and
Carnival, plus anew evening music
event, will now be held on December 7,
at Kaiapoi Rugby Park, which borders
Smith and Ranfurly Streets.
Event organiser Kaiapoi Promotion
Association (KPA) chairperson Martin
Pinkham says at the recent Kaiapoi
Connections meeting, KPA members
and the public were asked for their
input on the proposed change. The
previous location, the regeneration
grounds located behind the Kaiapoi
Library and council buildings, were no
longer fit for purpose, he said.
‘‘The areas used were becoming
increasingly unusable due to their
location and the rough ground which
had caused afew injuries over the six
years we have been using them. Also
this would be last year that the
regeneration site would be available.’’
He says the KPA has been working
closely with the Waimakariri District
Council to find anew suitable site to be
used as apermanent outdoor events
venue for all of Kaiapoi.
‘‘As well, we sought ideas on how to
move the Santa Parade to anew
location because of growing traffic
control problems,’’ Mr Pinkham says.
Due to arecent change in bus routes,
the usual parade route along Charles
and Williams Streets blocked anumber
of important bus and traffic routes.
He says after discussions with
interested parties and users of Kaiapoi
Rugby Park, the possibility of using the
park to host the events made alot of
practical and financial sense.
Festive celebrations ... Kaiapoi’s Santa Parade and Christmas Carnival are moving north
to Rugby Park.
PHOTO: FILE
The Committee completed an
assessment of options and concluded
that Kaiapoi Park was the best
location.
‘‘At our committee meetinglast week
we confirmed the proposal to relocate
the parade and the carnival to Rugby
Park and to also use the nearby Wylie
Park as acar parking venue with a
controlled crossing over Ranfurly
Street.’’
Mr Pinkham also says anew multiband
music event will be held at the
park in the evening.
‘‘This also made sense as we have all
the facilities there, the food stalls are
in place already as is the stage and we
have already signed amajor band for
the show.’’
The event will be called the Kaiapoi
Sounds of Summer and will host four
bands.
‘‘Many people have been asking us to
hold abig music event in the evening to
make the Santa Parade and Christmas
carnival awhole day of celebration for
the people of Kaiapoi and the many
thousands of visitors we get on the day
from Christchurch and Canterbury.’’
The KaiapoiTuahiwi Community
Board chairperson Jackie Watson says
she quite likes the idea of Rugby Park
as it has lots of easy access and good
parking nearby.
Tree rescue initiative for corridor grows
By SHELLEY TOPP
Home gardeners have donated 120 small
saplings to atree rescue initiative being
run by Comcol North Canterburytutor
Eru Metcalfe.
The saplings have been added to other
donated plants being raised in Comcol’s
Living LaboratoryNative Nursery in
preparation for planting anative tree
corridor.
Planting will begin from the college
grounds in Rangiora’s East Belt and run
to the AshleyRakahuri Regional Park.
Comcol has had several gardeners in
Kaiapoi and the Rangiora area donate
saplings, 80 of which were kowhai/
sophora microphylla saplings and 40
mānuka/kahikātoa (or kanuka) saplings.
‘‘The saplings were superfluous to
requirements,’’ Eru said.
They would have had to be removed
from around the base of their parent
trees, and possibly thrown on to ascrap
heap, but now they will be used to create
anew forest.
‘‘A risk assessment is done on each
plant to determine whether it needs to be
removed from the source site.
‘‘For example, will it be mown, or will
it be caught up in aweedeater, or
sprayed.
‘‘If these risks are present they will be
brought in to the Living Laboratory to be
reared and reintroduced to the
environment,’’ Eru said.
It is estimated 10,000 trees will be
needed for the native tree corridor
which will require community support to
succeed.
Atrapping programme has started to
prepare the area for planting and has
already had success with three rats, a
hedgehog and apossum snared in the
first two weeks after the traps were laid.
Akowhai tree was planted on Comcol
North Canterbury’s grounds in July last
year to celebrate the college’s 40th
anniversary, and mark the beginning of
the native tree corridor.
Anyone who can help support the
initiative by donating healthy native
trees, saplings and/or seedlings can
Line dancingispopular in the Pines
Beach /Kairaki Beach areas thanks to the
efforts of aformer caller of the popular
country and western pasttime.
Kairaki Beach Motor Camp resident Pat
Ackroyd says she has been happy with the
response from aged people in her area
who have come along to her new line
dancing classes.
‘‘It is awonderful way for people my age
and beyond to getout of the house, away
from the TV, strengthen their muscles,
meet their neighbours and others and
generally improve their health.’’
When she started three weeks ago in the
Pines Beach Hall, 35 people (men and
women) turned up, now the numbers are
stable at around 24 per weekly session.
For two hours each Thursday afternoon,
Pat guides novices and experienced line
dancers throughtheir steps to tunes by
Billy Ray Cyrus, Dolly Parton or any other
tune suggested.
‘‘You can line dance to any music, it’s a
fun way to dance and any music will do.
‘‘I do it because Iwanttogive people
something to do and have fun,’’ Pat says.
Oneofthe dancers, Pam Taylor of
Kaiapoi, says it’s always afun day out.
‘‘What else would Ibedoing right now,
as like many nearly 80 yearolds I’d
probably be snoozing in achair at home in
front of the TV, butinsteadI’m down at the
hall keepingmobile and fit, hanging out
with the girls and having alot of fun,’’ she
says.
Pat, aged 72, says she and her husband
started as square dance callers at dances
in Invercargill in the late 1980s.
After an extended trip to the USA in
1992 she started aline dance class to
complement her square dance club in
In 1995 she moved to the UK for her
‘‘Line dancing was just taking off then
and people loved it.’’
Returning to Christchurch in 1998 she
bought agym and incorporated line
dancing into fitness classes.
After recently suffering atriple bypass
heart operation Pat returned to her
passion for dancing and gym work as away
to boost her strength and mobility.
She says when she moved to Kairaki
area residents keen on line dancing.
‘‘I wanted to give people my own age
something to do that would benefit them in
their lives.
‘‘We dance, learn new steps, have fun
and enjoy ourselves for about two hours
each Thursday from 2.45pm, that’s long
enough for most people and me too,’’she
says.
Helping licence young drivers
ByDAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
AKaikōura district councillor hopes a
driver licence testing centre can be
established in the town.
Robby Roche, who is also adriver
mentor with the Kaikōura Mayors
Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) programme,
says having alocal testing centre would
make driving tests more accessible for
young people.
‘‘We are looking at setting up atesting
centre in the town, as it takes two hours to
drive to Rangiora and 1.5 hours to drive to
Blenheim.
‘‘In terms of the thingsthe kids need to
become good drivers, we are well served.’’
He said the town has many of the
elements needed for adriving test,
including pedestrian crossings and a
roundabout, while traffic lights are in the
pipeline.
Mr Roche recently passed the unit
standards to become adefensive driving
instructor.
The first local defensive driving course
began yesterday evening (July 31) and will
be held over four sessions.
To complete his assessment, the
sessions will be monitored by atutor from
Street Talk in Wellington via Zoom.
Passing adefensive driving course
reduces the wait time between sitting the
restricted and full licence tests by six
months.
Te Hā oMātauranga (Kaikōura
EducationTrust) manager Vicki Gulleford
said 21 young people are registered to sit
their restricted or full licence tests in
Blenheim in the next 60 days —those
being supported by Te Hā oMātauranga
and the Kaikōura MTFJ programme.
‘‘We take up to three young people up (to
Blenheim) at atime in the one car, so
having alocal testing centre would make a
big difference.’’ she said.
The Ashburton District Council has
submitted aremit to the Local
Government New Zealand conference,
being held in Wellington later this month,
calling on the Government to make
changes to the fee structure and to fund
additional testing centres.
Transport Minister Simeon Brown said
the focus for Waka Kotahi New Zealand
Transport Agency and Vehicle Testing
New Zealand is recruiting more driver
testing officers to meet demand.
‘‘The agencies will likely investigate
additional testing centres once driver
testing wait times are back to an
acceptable level. These decisions are
based on demand, as well as location as it
is important that they are located in areas
where driving testing routes exist that
meet the national test standard.’’
fate of their school building projects
through the media.
Woodend School principal Andrew
Retallick said Friday was ‘‘like a
rollercoaster’’, after learning the school
will not be receiving new classrooms this
year, following the Ministry of
Education’s review.
After acall to the Ministry, Mr
Retallick has ameeting next week to
discuss temporary arrangements.
Amuri Area School principal Matt
Barlow said he was ‘‘completely in the
dark’’ when contacted by local
democracy reporting earlier this week.
But he was pleased to learn his
school’s redevelopment will proceed to
the design stage.
Kaiapoi North School and Swannanoa
School have also learned their building
projects will not proceed this year, but
Te Kura oTuahiwi will receive new
classrooms and aschool hall as planned.
Education Minister Erica Stanford
announced the review in February,
which immediately put the brakes on 350
projects with acombined cost of $4.6
billion.
At the time, she said the scope of the
building works were ‘‘unrealistic and
unaffordable’’.
On Friday, the Ministry released the
outcome of its review, with 100 projects
put on hold in abid to save $2 billion.
Changes have been made to afurther
110 projects, such as removing nonessential
aspects or using modular or offtheshelf
rather than bespoke designs.
Mr Retallick said the school is already
at its capacity of 490 students and will
need to use the library or the staff room
as classrooms to get through to the end of
Bulging at the seams ... Woodend School hopes asolution can be found soon.
the year.
He said 98 new students had been
enrolled so far this year, with at least
another 20 expected to enrol in the
coming months, on the back of the
booming Ravenswood subdivision.
‘‘And that is just the ones we know
about.
‘‘We just want asolution, whether it is
atemporary or apermanent one.
‘‘We just need to have something in
place for next year.’’
Kaiapoi North School principal Jason
Miles said the delay is not as significant
for his school, as the roll is not growing
quite as fast as Woodend School.
Swannanoa School is managing its
growth by converting aboard of trusteesowned
storeroom into aclassroom.
Te Kura oTuahiwi School principal
Dot Singh said it was relief to learn her
school’s build would proceed as planned,
even if it’s nearly ayear later.
While she is awaiting the details from
the Ministry, she understood new
modular classrooms were being built in
Nelson.
‘‘We are grateful to have new
PHOTO: FILE
classrooms and ahall will be built from
the ground up.
‘‘We will be able to have prizegivings
together.
‘‘It is going to be great.’’
The project is expected to begin in
September and be completed by May
next year.
In the meantime, the Māori immersion
school will us prefab classrooms, as the
roll grows from 175 pupils to 200 by the
end of the year.
Mayor Marie Black
RewiAlley’slegacy
lives on in Amberley
As Iwrite this column Iampreparing to
welcome, on behalf of the district, a
group of students from three schoolsin
the Changping district, Beijing, China.
Our district hosts ahistorical and
cultural connection with the district, that
has been developed through the life and
works of Rewi Alley, who as avery young
boy lived in Amberley with his family.
Alley’s father Federick was the
Headmaster of AmberleyPrimary school,
and they lived in the school house which
was sited in Chamberlain Park.
It is recorded that the Alley family
spent many hours playing in the stream
that flowed through the town.
Phillippa Reynolds, aniece of Alley,
wrote in her book “Rewi Alley –from
Canterbury to China’’ that when Alley
was asmall boy three or fouryearsold.
and living with his family in Amberley,
there was an incident he remembered for
the rest of his life.
He recalled hammering holes into a
water storage tank during asummer
drought. He enjoyed the sound of water
‘‘spurting out”.
Interestingly Alley’s life continued in
this manner, when in 1931 the middle
reaches of the Yangtze River suffered
from agreat flood.
Rewi Alley gave up his vacation and
participated in flood relief transporting
supplies to relief workers in Honghu, and
continuing to assist many Chinese
farmers in their approach with irrigation
or when flooding impacted on their
farming practices.
Dalley, lead adelegation to cement the
sister district relationship with
Changping which continues to be
enduring today. One of the purposes for
the relationship is to offer an opportunity
through our young people and education
to bring the cultures closer together.
In March 2020 just prior to the lock
down for Covid we were preparing to
welcome agroup of students to visit and
immersethemselves and experience life
within our district. However, this trip
obviously did not continue, and for a
variety of reasons it has taken some time
to get back to achieve this goal.
In November 2017 Iwas fortunate to
return to Honghu city in theHubei
Province to further developthe
relationship and to jointly celebrate the
120th year since the birth of Alley.
Ispoke on behalf of the Hurunui
District, alongside the then ambassador
Sir Don McKinnon, at the unveiling of the
huge statue of Alleypositioned on the
banks of the Yangtze River.
Finally now, we are in the position to
invite 32 studentswith four teachers to
our district.
They will have an exciting opportunity,
spending some time with our students at
Amuri Area school, Hurunui College and
Amberley School where the Rewi Alley
Hallissited.
They will visit farm and landscapes of
interest also.
It is pleasing to welcome this group and
further cement the goals, and vision of
our sister district, and the historical and
cultural relationship.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor,
Covid restrictions have, sadly, impacted public representatives and the people they
are elected to serve.
Death threats are intimidating and require specific detail to gain perspective and
address.
Abusive emails, while unpleasant and unacceptable in detail, may be asafety
valve for frustration.
Disinformation, however, is anebulous term, used subjectively in equation with
violence in this context.
Thoughtful, open debate brings moderating balance to any organisation while
labelling and censoring divides.
We can be thankful for, and should use the opportunity to request, information
under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act which is part of
the democratic process.
Areasonable request might be abenefit rather than an expense for ratepayers.
Local Government NZ has organised panel discussions and conducted apoll,
presumably nationally.
Is there genuine concern that Waimakariri would be influenced by LGNZ?
Hopefully, and importantly, aspirit of goodwill and mutual respect, among people
with differing views, can be restored in this beautiful place so that everyone
benefits.
Yours,
Environment Canterburyissued a
ECan councillors vote to be more open and transparent
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Canterbury’s regional councillors have
vowed to be more open and transparent.
Environment Canterbury voted to make
all briefings and workshops public by
default at arecent council meeting ,while
council staff are working on plans tohave
meetings livestreamed from September.
The decision follows recommendations
from the Ombudsman’s 2023 report into
the way councils conduct theirbusiness.
North Canterburycouncillor Grant
Edge saidhewas pleased to see the
council ‘‘moving in the right direction’’.
‘‘The Ombudsman was pretty clear of the
need for transparency.’’
Councillor Vicky Southworth said it was
importanttofollow best practice and for
the public to be able ‘‘to hear what we are
talking about’’.
‘‘I am sure we can find space away from
the meeting to have those more ‘out there’
conversations’’.
CrDeon Swiggs said other councils had
already adopted similar policies and ‘‘the
sky hasn’t fallen in’’.
Cr John Sunckell said he supported the
motion, but was concerned open meetings
might stifle ‘‘free and frank
conversations’’.
As afirst term councillor,Nick Ward
said he often struggled with workshops
and discussing matters whichwere
commercially sensitive.
But fellow first term councillor Greg
Byrnes said he was astrong believer in ‘‘if
you can’t say it here and have our public
hear it, then what is the point of saying it?’’
He said there was aprocess for making
discussions public excluded when there
was aclear basis, such as commercial
sensitivity.
North Canterburycouncillor Clare
McKay was the only councillor to vote
against the motion, saying ‘‘honesty is
going to be stifled’’. ‘‘I think this council
does agreat job in being transparent and
not making decisions in workshops.’’
Amission to get adisabled duck back on
its feet has met with success.
Myelin'sone of more than 100 ducks
cared for by North Canterbury sanctuary
Duck Rescue, near the small town of
Oxford.
It was set up by Kim Hartley, who says
all the inhabitants have their unique
stories and needs.
She says Myelin was born with arare
disability.
‘‘Basically, he'sgot abalance disorder
and he cannot stand by himself.’’
Kim appealed online for help in
getting the twoyearold duck back up
and moving again.
Archer Smith, aged 12, from
Christchurch answered the call, and set
about designing and crafting an
innovative solution for the bird.
He designed and custombuilt a
support frame made from anodised
aluminium, with allweather wheels
which allows Myelin to propel himself
around on his webbed feet.
And Myelin'staken to the unusual
device like aduck to water.
Kim says it'sbeen life changing for
him.
‘‘He'sgets so excited. Ithink just
having that little bit of independence.’’
North Canterbury Duck Rescue has
been helping numerous ducks and
ducklings on the rented farmland site for
the last eight years.
‘‘I get alot of calls in spring,
sometimes every day from people who
have found ducklings in drains, found
ducklings and mothers being hit by a
car.’’
Hartley enjoys her job, and says ducks
are very intelligent.
‘‘I just love ducks. Inever planned to
do it, but the first year there were
ducklings that hatched in the middle of
winter. Iended up looking after them
after seeing they were nearly dying.
‘‘And Ijust sort of fell in love with
ducks from there. Ifind them hilarious
most of the time, very entertaining.’’
But the outofwork IT consultant has
been funding the sanctuary's large
running costs out of her own savings in
recent times, prompting her to set up a
Givealittle page to encourage donations
from bird lovers.
Kim hopes to one day save enough
money to buy some land to permanently
house the duck sanctuary, and ensure a
brighter future for these amphibious
feathered birds.
Accommodation supplements. .. How much assistanceyou get could depend on where
you live and not justyour income and how much rent you pay.
PHOTO: FILE
Discrepancy woes
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Red tape means people eligible for an
accommodation supplement may not be
getting the assistance they need.
APegasus resident, who does not wish
to be named, says she would receive twice
the amount for her accommodation
supplement if she lived in the
neighbouring town of Woodend.
She rents athreebedroom house for
herself and one child at $560 aweek and
receives an $80 accommodation
supplement on top of her ACC payments.
If she lived in Woodend or Rangiora she
would receive a$155 aweek.
‘‘When Ifirst came here seven years ago
the rent was $400 aweek.
‘‘It has gone up by $60 aweek in the last
12 months and the accommodation
supplement doesn’t keep up with that.’’
She has been looking to move to
Woodend or Rangiora, but there are few
rental properties available.
The Ministry of Social Development
(MSD) has confirmed Pegasus is classified
as ‘‘area 4’’, which is the lowest of four
classifications.
‘‘Every town, city and rural area across
New Zealand falls into one of four
accommodation supplement areas,’’
general manager housing and
employment Hayley Hamilton said.
The classifications were established in
the Social Security Act 2018, when the
Government updated accommodation
supplement area boundaries and
increased the payment rates, she said.
People living in ‘area 1’, including
Auckland and Queenstown, may qualify
for the highest maximum accommodation
supplement weekly payments, while those
living in ‘area 4’ qualify for the lowest
rates. Area 2includes Christchurch,
Rangiora, Woodend, Oxford and
Amberley, while Kaikōura and Hanmer
Springs are listed in area 3.
Ms Hamilton said some people may
quality for temporary additional support.
She said it was up to Parliament to change
the payment rates or boundaries.
In March, Social Development Minister
Louise Upston announced she had
commissioned advice on changes to the
accommodation supplement. It followed
concerns the area classifications were not
keeping up with urban growth in the
Queenstown area.
‘‘The use of outdated geographic
information and classifications by MSD
has seen some households receive alower
accommodation supplement than they
otherwisewould,’’ Ms Upston said at the
time.
‘‘The issue is particularly pronounced
in Queenstown and exists in asmall
number of other areas where there has
been rapid urban expansion.’’
There is no update on when this will be
resolved, leaving people struggling to
keep up with rising rents.
Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon said
the accommodation supplement
classifications were ‘‘completely out of
date’’.
‘‘It is my understanding that the
maximum payment setting for the
accommodation supplement has only
been reviewed twice in more than 20
years.
‘‘It has never cost so much to run a
household and having the extra money in
the accommodation supplement will be
life changing for some people.’’
Mr Gordon said he planned to raise the
issue at the Canterbury Mayoral Forum. A
search on TradeMefound 28 properties
for rent in Pegasus, Woodend,
Ravenswood, Rangiora and Kaiapoi with
three or more bedrooms,all ranging
between $540 and $680 aweek.
Volunteers dedicated and inspirational
By ROBYN BRISTOW
The exceptional service of volunteers
was celebrated at aCommunity Awards
evening in Waipara recently.
Hurunui Mayor Marie Black said she
was in awe of the talent and
achievements of recipients, and
thanked them for ‘‘inspiring us with all
your hard work and dedication’’.
‘‘We all firmly believe your hard work
and exceptional service to make our
district abetter place is worthy of
recognition, you make Hurunui agreat
place to work, live and play.’’
North Canterbury Veterinary Clinics
Ltd was awarded the inaugural Special
Mayoral Business Community Service
Award.
Mrs Black recalled the droughts of
2015 and 2018, the Waiau Earthquake of
2016, and the challenging environment
now being faced by farmers and urban
people.
The support from North Canterbury
Veterinary Clinics Ltd had always been
there.
“It’s about the organisation’s long
history in business, animal health and
human health.”
The Mayoral Award for Outstanding
Youth Leadership was awarded jointly
to Laura Cundy and Millie Jane
McIlraith.
The two high school students, based in
Hanmer Springs and Hawarden
respectively, have both carved
inspirational paths in their chosen
sports, school extra curricular activities
and leadership roles.
Laura, who is head student at Amuri
Area School this year, excelled in
speech competitions and was the
driving force behind the Hurunui Youth
Council formal.
Culture at Hurunui College, and has
held significant roles in youth
leadership as well as being avery
talented clay target shooter. She has
seven New Zealand placings.
Mrs Black said Laura and Millie Jane
lead with compassion not ego, and
encouraged rather than dominated.
Millie Jane made aspecial thanks to
Hurunui District Council for
continuously supporting Hurunui Youth
Council (HYC), during atime where
district councils around New Zealand
are opting to discontinue this platform.
‘‘At every turn, council has said our
youth input is vital, and we appreciate
it,’’ she said.
The recipient of the Youth Volunteer
Award was Danielle Love. The 19yearold
Waipara resident has been a
member of Hato Hone St John since she
was 13, and recently joined the Waipara
Volunteer Fire Brigade. Her extensive
involvement in community service and
leadership has earned her aspot on the
Spirit of Adventure thanks to
sponsorship from Kate Valley Trust.
‘‘I’m very grateful to be part of such a
supportive community’’, Danielle said.
The Volunteering for Youth Award
went to BoDean Blackburn (aka Missy),
in recognition of her huge commitment
to Hurunui Boxing Club, her mentorship
with youth, and encouragement of the
sport and fitness as away to combat
mental health issues particularly with
youth.
‘‘Council wants to commend Missy on
her contribution to our young people
and acknowledge all the personal time
she puts into serving our youth
community, putting us and our
wellbeing in the centre of what she does
and the connections she fosters’’, HYC
member Tamzyn Murdoch said.
The Special Mayoral Community
Health Centre, and her ‘amazing
memory’ to earn her the role as alocal
identity of historical data.
Mrs Ensor said she had never set out
to do things like this, it just happened.
‘‘Thank you to my whole family, and
the whole of the Hurunui District, this
award should go to all those who have
helped me,’’ she said.
Helen Lodge and Chris Reeves (South
Ward), Graeme Phillips (Amuri),
like this, with support people give you,
Amuri’s Graeme Phillips said.
Careful time management and his own
personal recipe have again earned
national success for Kaiapoi butcher
Fred Hicklin.
Cattermoles Butchery owner says he
takes his time curing his meat and adds a
‘‘wee touch’’ of his own special mix of
herbs and spices to his shop’s popular
meats.
It is arecipe that tickled the taste buds
of the judges once again at this year’s
Retail Meat New Zealand’s 100% New
Zealand Bacon and Ham Awards.
Lastyear he entered three categories to
win one award –asilver.
This year he entered four categories
and bought home three awards.
Cattermoles Sugar Cured Bacon won
silver, Dry Cured Shoulder Bacon, silver,
and Dry Cured Middle Bacon scored a
bronze award from the competition,
which garnered 213 entries, from 50
retailers.
‘‘This year they were different cuts and
Ifound the judging alot harder, but I’m
happy for the team here as we still came
out on top,’’ says Fred.
‘‘The sugar cured bacon is aloin cut and
you have to be very careful when curing it
so you don’t make it too lean and dry,
whereas the dry cured shoulder bacon
has abit more fat content. But you have to
spend the time getting it just right.’’
Time and care are the two main
ingredients Fred adheres to in his
business.
He says it helps him to make his
popular bacon in amore high quality
traditional style.
All the work is done onsite by Fred’s
team of six in Kaiapoi, using an old
fashioned traditional chip smoker, with
sugar and salts.
competing and it was good to be able to
He says many were concerned with
rising costs and the spate of closures of
Poetry offers stroke advice
By JOHN COSGROVE
Not everyone who has astroke is
an older person.
Kaiapoi writer Sue Waight used
to work with several young stroke
victims.
People who were not aged or
infirm, but fit and mostly under 60.
‘‘I worked with marathon
runners, fit people and young
parents with children.
‘‘I then worked with the whole
family to facilitate the recovery
process for the stroke victim.’’
One day she searched for
resources to explain the stroke
recoveryprocess to amuch
younger audience, but couldn’t
find anything suitable it was all
aimed at older people.
‘‘It’s then Ithought about writing
abook for them (the children),
making it relevant and not
overloading it with technical
jargon.
‘‘I thought the best way to reach
ayounger audience was to write it
in rhyming poetry style.’’
She says rhyming language is
one of the best ways for young
children to remember things.
‘‘I’ve been writing poetry since I
was five and since Iwas diagnosed
with Parkinson's Disease four
years ago Ihave found it much
easier to write poetry now, it sort of
flows so much easier through my
mind than it ever did before.’’
The A5 booklet she has produced
offers advice for children and
parents on how to work through
the massive changes in their
family's dynamic when astroke
affects one of the parents.
Dad's turn to learn is achild’s
journey through their father's
recoveryprocess.
It starts with what dad used to do
for them when they were growing
up, and then it moves on to what
they can now do to help their sick
dad relearn how to walk, talk and
live again following astroke.
She wrote it in 20 minutes and
say's it was alot of fun.
‘‘I then went to Facebook and
sought expressions of interest in
drawing illustrations from local
artists.’’
Several artists replied but Sue
says the work and spirit of Jessica
Tierney stood out.
‘‘I liked her style and asked her
to illustrate the book.’’
Jessica Tierney says the process
of designing and producing the
illustrations for the book required
capturing arange of emotions on
each page.
She says it was challenging to
understand the perspectives of the
children and family members
going through the stroke recovery
process with aloved one, but it was
aprocess that was essential to
bringing the illustrations to life.
‘‘This is Sue's passion project, I
was thrilled because I've always
wanted to create my own children's
book but didn't know where to
start.
‘‘The inspiration for the books
illustrations was all thanks to Sue’s
incredible work with Stroke
patients.’’
Being selfemployed with two
young children, Jessica says she
needed to prioritise time for the
project.
‘‘Creating an illustration each
week on my day off was timeconsuming
but ultimately very
rewarding. While some illustration
ideas flowed easily, others
required alot more time to perfect
the details.’’
18 months later, Sue is seeking
financial help to publish the book
so it can be in doctors’ surgeries,
libraries and bookstores. She has
now started acrowd funding
appeal to publish the book and
she’s half way there at $1400. She
needs atotal of $3359 but only has
17 days left to raise it.
The Waimakariri District
the position late in October
last year, with two tenders
identified for further
Council’s Property Unit
Manager Rob Hawthorne
says experienced Holiday
providing an economic
return to the council, as well
as providing wider benefits
for the Waikuku Beach
community.
‘‘SJE Holiday Parks stood
out.
‘‘I know many people who
have stayed in their Holiday
‘‘For these reasons, and
Over 30 teams to contest Springston Trophy
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Aworldclass equine crosscountry course
is taking shape on the outskirts of
Rangiora, as preparations for October’s
2024 Hinterland Springston Trophy begin
in earnest.
The 52nd annual South Island Pony
Club teams event will be based at the
Rangiora A&P showgrounds on October 4,
5and 6.
Atotal of 34 teams have confirmed entry
in the North CanterburyPony Club hosted
event, with some combined teams still to
be confirmed.
The North CanterburyClub includes the
Amberley, Belfast, Eyreton, Kaiapoi,
Okuku, Oxford, Rangiora and View Hill
pony clubs.
Chair and event convener Geoff Spark
says crosscountrydesigner Cam
Robertson, asenior international eventing
course designer,isbusy building jumps,
and some are already being painted.
‘‘It is coming together well, with
everyone on the large organising
committee working enthusiastically as we
get to the sharp end of planning for the
event,’’ he says.
Geoff says the strong response from
teams from the top to the bottom of the
South Island has been encouraging, and
he is delighted with the response from the
equestrian community and the local
community in general to the event.
‘‘We are all really excited and looking
forward to delivering aquality event in
North Canterbury. It will bring alot of
benefits to the area and showcase North
Canterburyand the awesome facilities at
the Rangiora Showgrounds,’’ Geoff says.
Around 800 people, including riders,
supportersand officials are expected to
attend, with many more expected to turn
up for the cross country phase of the threeday
Hinterland Springston Trophy.
The new Rangiora course will start and
It will be 2.5 kilometres long, and
includes aspectacular new water jump.
The course will be used for the first time
at the event, and will be fenced off before
then to prevent North Canterbury riders
from gaining an unfair advantage during
the competition.
Cam hopes the new course will help
generate excitement for the event, similar
to that at famous English horse trials, such
as Badminton or Burghley.
‘‘It is ahigh adrenaline, entertaining
spectator sport, and there will be plenty of
places around the course to get a
spectacular view of the competition,’’ he
Participation in children’ssport growing
Children’s sport participation continues to
grow in North Canterbury, with NC Sports
(formerly known as The North Canterbury
Sport &Recreation Trust) playing akey
role in fostering enjoyment of sport and
physical activity from avery young age.
The MainPower Primary School Sports
Coaching programme has been one of NC
Sports flagship activities for over a
decade, with three teams of coaches
visiting as many as 42 schools on aregular
basis through the year to assist with
teaching fundamental sports skills to
thousands of children.
The benefits of this programme have
been demonstrated in many ways, from
increasing participation from the children
in both school and club sport, increasing
participation levels when these children
go on to secondary school, to improved
skill levels across adiverse range of
sports.
Unlike many other similar programmes
around the country, the MainPower
Coaches work in teams of two, which helps
to ensure all children are engaged in the
activities and different levels of ability are
catered for.
For Term 3the MainPower Primary
School Coaching team is back up to afull
complement of six coaches with the
addition of Molly Cockburn to the group.
Sessions this term are mostly focusing
on Athletics track and field sports, which
times in well with the ParisOlympics and
leads into Athletic sports competitions in
Term 4.
Next week NC Sports is running its
annual One Day Winter Sports
tournaments, which will see school teams
competing in Rugby, Hockey, Netball and
Football, with the best school teams from
Rakahuriand Pegasus Zones selected to
compete in the Canterburywide
tournament later in the month.
Even before children reach primary
school age NC Sports is able to help them
develop basic body movement and sports
skills through its Gymnastics and Sports
Sporting participation ... Children enjoying an NC Sports Miniball programme at
FUNdamentals programmes.
Sports classes for babies and toddlers
are held at MainPower Stadium, with each
week focusing on skills for aparticular
type of sport, mixing foot and handeye
coordination skills with balance, special
awareness and other body control skills.
Gymnastics FUNdamentals are held at
Rangiora Fitness Centre with particular
focus on gymnastics skills.
These classes are for Under 3s, 35 year
olds and 58 year olds.
Former World Champion Trampoline
athlete and MainPower coach Bronwyn
Dibb has taken over the running of the
Gymnastics programme this term,
bringing her unique skills and experience
to the team.
NCSports is also involved in supporting
club and school coaches through its
Community Coach Developer.
This programme aims to upskill coaches
toensure children have positive
experiences with sport from an early age,
which helps to keep them involved
through to adulthood. Coach Developer
Fraser Gauld has been working with
coaches of various ages and skill levels
across several sporting codes through the
winter season, and will soon be canvassing
the summer sports for likely coaches to
join the programme.
Other youth activities NCSports is
involved in include the MainPower
Waiswim Swimming Programme, the
Cycle Sense programme for Year 6
students, aweekly sports programme for
HomeSchooled students, and afterschool
sports programmes for miniball
(basketball), volleyball and hockey.
With the recent growth in Pickleball, NC
Sports is introducing aPickleball
Academy at MainPower Stadium for Year
7/10 students this term.
Encouraging participation is just the
first step in NCSports efforts to make
sport and recreation ahigh priority for the
North Canterbury community.
Through its network of local Fitness
Centres NCSports is able to provide high
performance training for individual
athletes as well as local teams.
This can include strength, speed and
fitness testing, nutritional advice, and
personalised weights/cardio programmes
based on the individual needs of each
athlete.
NC Sports also administers and
contributes resources to the MainPower
Youth Sport Scholarship each year, which
provides support for up to 10 local athletes
who are competing internationally.
The scholarship aims to help these
young stars reach their next sporting
goals, with many former scholars going on
to compete at Olympic and
Commonwealth Games or other elite
international competitions.
Glenmark-Cheviot wins unique double
23
RUGBY
ByLINDSAY KERR
GlenmarkCheviot celebrated
aunique double in its rugby
historywhen it added the 2024
North Canterbury senior
grandfinal to its busy
honours board on Saturday.
The double came on the
back of victoryinthe
combined country
competition against
Prebbleton earlier in the
season.
This final against another
local favourite Kaiapoi, was a
hard fought affair where
GlenmarkCheviot did enough
to claim a3021 victory.
Played at Kaiapoi in perfect
conditions, the game lived up
to all prematch expectations.
The visitors form suggested
they could win with
comparative ease.
Kaiapoi however playing at
home, and agrand finals
record suggested it would
never settle for second place
without a100% effort.
The game produced exactly
this script and essentially
went down to the closing
moments beforeGlenmark
Cheviot could confidently
believe it had achieved arare
double in local rugby.
GlenmarkCheviot started
the game stronger, taking only
five minutes before prop
Andrew Zupichich was
mauled over the Kaiapoi line
to score.
Kaiapoi however, quickly
settled into its work, and
before apredictable
parochial home crowd,
attacked the combined side’s
defence in waves.
With 20 minutes gone it ran
the blind from 40 metres out.
With an overlap, first five
eighth Taine Lawson was last
on hand, and scored.
As the half neared its end,
the Kaiapoi pack began to
dominate, but it was the
visitors who then stamped
their mark on the game,
making the most of an
attacking situation 40 meters
from the Kaiapoi line.
Ablind side Glenmark
Cheviot move involving four
of its outside backs resulted in
former Saracens full back
HarryMurray on hand to
scorehis teams first try after
being second, and then last
receiver.
On the stroke of half time in
what was considered to be a
lethal strike to the final
outcome, Mike Kean playing
his 200th game for aGlenmark
XV, pierced the Kaiapoi
defence near the Kaiapoi line
to score. With the try
converted, Glenmark Cheviot
went to a177 at orange time.
Recent games suggested
that the visitors points
advantage meant they would
use this as the platform to out
muscle their opponents.
After 15 minutes Kean broke
the Kaiapoi defence line and
with numbers on hand it was
centre, Guy Jensen, who
finished the movement off
with atry and his team out to
a227 lead.
Ten minutes later, following
astring of penalties against
Kaiapoi, the combined side
skipper,Andrew Hull, scored
from the back of the scrum.
With only 10 minutes
remaining only the bravest of
gamblerswould have found
any money to back Kaiapoi.
Perhaps, thankfully, there
was no book makers on hand,
but if therewere these final
moments would have resulted
in aperiod crammed with
nerves and tension.
Kaiapoi raised their bar
again taking the game to
GlenmarkCheviot.
Following ashort period of
time on attack, the forwards
drove Bailey Counihan over
the line.
With only two minutes
remaining, Kaiapoi did score
again.
With the try scored by Max
Dunbar the score line was all
of asudden under six points
(2721) and Kaiapoi’s chance
of victory was again areality.
‘‘We were pretty proud of
this comeback and made a
good contest of it,’’ said acting
Kaiapoi coach Matt Newton.
GlenmarkCheviot however
was quick to recognise the
position it found itself in and
from apenalty, Nick Hyde
found his radar, and 3021
became the final score.
In agame that was typical of
finals football, there were few
stars.
Guy Jensen and Mike Keane
perhaps deserve mention in
the winners back line and lock
Will Chaffey and prop Andrew
Zupicich from the forwards.
Sidney Coster playing on
the side of the scrum for
Kaiapoi along with half back
McConchie, and number eight
Sid Coster had their shirt
numbers to the fore on many
occasions.
GlenmarkCheviot 30(Andrew
Zuppicich, Harry Murray,
Mike Keane, Matt Jensen,
Andrew Hill tries. Nick Hyde
conversion and penalty) beat
Kaiapoi 21(Bailey Counihan,
Max Dunbar,Taine Lawson try
and 3conversions).
Division 2
Ohoka and Kaikoura shared
the division two
championship after they
played out a15all draw in the
division 2grand final curtain
raiser.
There was little between the
two sides after Ohoka had
gone to half time leading 75.
Kaikoura went ahead in the
open exchanges of the second
half with awell executed solo
try before extending this with
another unconverted try.
Ohoka scored aconverted try
and with time on the clock,
kicked apenalty to draw level.
In the Division 2reserve final
Hurunui accounted for
Woodend 2912, while Ohoka
did have something to
celebrate in the Colts final
Tackling climate change together in NC
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
North Canterbury’s three councils have
thrown their weight behind aplan to
tackle climate change.
The Waimakariri, Hurunui and
Kaikōura councils have endorsed the
Canterbury Mayoral Forum’s draft
climate partnership plan.
Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon, who
chairs the mayoral forum’s climate
action reference group, says by working
together larger councils could help the
smaller councils.
‘‘Climate change doesn’t recognise
territorial boundaries, so we need
something that works across
Canterbury.
‘‘Christchurch is further ahead, which
is fantastic, and in Waimakariri we are
developing our work programme.’’
The Waimakariri District Council
adopted its natural environment
strategy at acouncil meeting last week,
after completing its consultation
alongside the Long Term Plan.
The 30year strategy aims to protect
the district’s natural ecosystems and its
special indigenous biodiversity.
Mr Gordon said the mayors hoped to
officially launch the Canterbury Climate
Partnership Plan later this year and he
planned to invite Climate Change
Minister Simon Watts.
‘‘I have raised with the Minister about
attending apublic launch to provide
some inspiration of what can be done in
other regions.’’
The plan sets out 10 climate actions to
help the 11 Canterbury councils prepare
for ‘‘a sustainable future’’.
The actions included understanding
climate risks and improving resilience,
reducing emissions, adaptation
planning, naturebased solutions,
education and advocacy, supporting
papatipu rūnanga, integrating climate
change considerations into council
processes, identifying cofunding
opportunities, monitoring and
evaluation, and implementation.
Hurunui Mayor Marie Black said her
council had endorsed the plan in
principle.
The Hurunui District Council was
represented on the climate action
reference group by Councillor Dave
Hislop, adairy farmer.
‘‘Dave brings apragmatic approach
and he is grounded in farming
principles,’’ Mrs Black says.
Cr Hislop and other rural councillors
had questioned aspects of the plan and
science behind it, before giving their
support, chief executive Hamish Dobbie
says.
‘‘I think it has been through arobust
process and councillors of all
persuasions have been involved.
‘‘We might not 100 percent agree with
everything, but it is important
Canterbury stands together and is seen
to be working together.
‘‘There is adesire for us to thrive and
do well and loom large in the
consciousness of the Government and
the Canterbury Climate Partnership
Plan is just one of those things which we
are working on collectively.’’
Kaikōura District Council chief
executive Will Doughty says his council
has endorsed the plan and budgeted for
its contribution over the next three
years in its Long Term Plan.
‘‘We believe it is agreat initiative to be
looking at the issues from awider
regional perspective. We are very keen
to see some tangible outcomes from the
climate actions.’’
RURAL LIFE
Canterbury News, August 1, 2024
Teenagersgiven ataste of rural careers
More than 20 secondaryschool
students from throughoutNew
Zealand recently completed a
threeday livein programme to
learn about careers in the foodproduction
supply chain.
The allexpensespaid
Farm2Future educational
programme, sponsored by
Rabobank, was attended by 24
Year 12 students from 20
schools.
ARabobank spokesperson
said the programme included
visits to arange of agribusiness
operations across Canterbury,
including sheep and beef, dairy
and sheep milking operations,
MeadowMushrooms,
Foodstuffs, LeaderBrand,and
PGG Wrightson.
The programme also featured
apanel discussion with several
young agribusiness
professionals talking about
their roles.
This was the third edition of
the Farm2Future programme
(previously FoodX) with the
prior programmes having taken
place in 2019 and 2023.
The initial idea for the
programme was developed by
the Rabobank Upper South
Island Client Council –agroup
of Rabobank clients who work
with the bank to help address
key agricultural industry
challenges –after they
identified aneed for more
promotion of agriindustry
careersamong secondary
school students.
All three of the programmes
have been run in conjunction
with landbased education
specialist Te Whare Wānaka o
Aoraki Lincoln University.
Rabobank Upper South
Island Client Council member
Ed Tapp said the programme
took in visits to awide array of
agribusiness operations across
the foodsupply chain,
providing attendees with an
insight into the journey food
products took from paddock to
plate.
‘‘The goal of the programme
was to give participants a
greater appreciation of the
huge number of career
opportunities across the food
and agrivalue chain, and I
think we managed to give the
students areally good taste of
what the sector has to offer.’’
While several of the
participants had grown up on
farms, abouthalf were from
urban backgrounds and had no
agricultural experience at all.
‘‘Many young New
Zealanderswho live in urban
centres don’t have strong links
to the agriculturalsector, and it
is essential that more work is
done to further develop the
urbanrural connection,’’ he
said.
‘‘This programme is one of
the things the Upper South
Island Rabobank Client
Council is doing to further
build this connection, and one
of the key messages we tried to
instil into the students was that
you don’t need to come from a
farming family to have a
successful career in
Looking ahead ... School students visit aCanterbury dairy farm during aRabobanksponsored
educational programme to learn about career pathways in the food production supply chain.
agriculture.’’
Programme attendeeBrooke
Cooper, from Rangi Ruru Girls’
School in Christchurch, said
the camp had altered her
perspective.
The 16yearold said she had
planned to study agriculture at
Lincoln, but her experienceson
the programme had changed
her mind and she was now
intending to study food
sciences.
‘‘I wasn’t sure what option to
go with.
‘‘This camp really opened my
eyes up.’’
After hearing from the panel,
she said she became aware of
just how many different roles
there were in the industry.
‘‘The panellists had so many
cool stories. Iguess Inever had
anybody run me through all the
career options in the sector
before.’’
PHOTO: SUPPLIED
Another attendee, 16yearold
Ben Morris, from Hamilton
Boys’ High School, said the
camp took him ‘‘all over the
place’’ and he learnt alot.
‘‘I got afar better perspective
of what actually happens at
different agribusiness
operations. Igrew up on adairy
farm so have abit of knowledge
about the sector, but Ihad no
idea just how large the
agricultural industry was.’’
Whatsteps are you takingto
stay competitiveand resilient
Pleasing ResultsinControlledPurchaseof
AlcoholOperation
Council’salcohol licensing team alongsidePolice
carried outaControlledPurchaseOperation recently
across 27 premises in Kaiapoiand Rangiora.
The test comprised of us sending asmall group of
under 18s into each premises to check that they
were complying with the Sale and Supply
of Alcohol Act 2012.
While all 27premises passed the operation, two
licensees nearly failed when, onboth occasions,
the server poured drinks for the minors. The
service of alcohol was stopped only when aduty
manager intervened to check their identification.
While the operation was asuccess overall, the
result is areminder that licensees need to have
solid processes inplace for training and re-training
staff, checking identification, understanding
alcohol related harm, and ensuring they abide by
their host responsibility policy.
END TIMES-PAPACY INBIBLE
PROPHECY
The Papacy has been involved dramatically
in world affairs for almost 2,000 years. Many
history books have documented their actions
and influence against non Catholics. The book
of Revelation reveals their contribution to the
events at the final conflict when theLord Jesus
Christ has returned to the Earth. Jesus taught
his disciples tobe‘wise as serpents, harmless
as doves’ forgiving to the utmost, exhibiting
non resistance to evil. Their directive was to
walk faithfully and preach the Gospel which
has the power for salvation, the ultimate help
for mankind.
