BIO & HISTORY
MADAM
IrisYateman
FOUNDER
WOMEN’S COUNCIL OF NAREB
The late Iris Yateman, born on October 7, 1919, in
Indianapolis, Indiana, was a trailblazer in the real
estate industry and a dedicated community leader.
The youngest of three siblings with two older
brothers, Iris attended Indianapolis Public School #46
and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School class of
1936. She later founded and served as the historian of the
Crispus Attucks Alumni Club. It was at Attacks where she nurtured her love for music. A
talented singer, Iris auditioned for "The Tonight Show" with Jack Paar and was a dedicated
member and president of the Bethel AME Choir.
Throughout her 81 years of life, Iris made a significant impact as one of the three founders
of the Women's Council of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) in 1971
at the National Convention in Atlanta, GA. She was a prominent member of the Indiana
Association of Real Estate Brokers (IAREB), the local chapter of NAREB in Indianapolis,
which promoted the value of Black real estate agents and informed the community through
seminars that homeownership is possible. From 1975 to 1976, Iris served as president of
the Women's Council of NAREB and was an active member of the NAREB Executive Board.
Her leadership was instrumental in bringing the NAREB annual convention to Indianapolis
in 1974.
In the 1940s, Iris worked as a licensed cosmetologist at Paris Beauty Salon on 27th and
Northwestern Ave. She later transitioned into the real estate industry, becoming a licensed
professional in the 1960s and working in the field for over 40 years at her agency,
Associated Realtist, located at 3534 N. Illinois. In addition to her real estate career, she
owned a flower shop, Iris and Flowers, in the 1980s and was known as an exemplary talent
in every profession she pursued.
Iris was married to her husband, best friend, and life partner Carl Yateman, for 33 years,
and together they adopted a son, Carl Yateman, Jr., when he was three years old. Iris
Yateman's legacy is one of passion, leadership, and service. Her contributions to the
Women's Council of NAREB and the Indianapolis community will continue to inspire
current and future generations.
HISTORY
1
8
The genesis of the Women's Council of the National Association of Real Estate
Brokers was born over forty-plus years ago. However, the vision and
determination of a few women made the Council reality years after the
inception of our national organization NAREB®.
NAREB's history states that at their organizing meeting in Tampa, Florida, in
1947, the following National Business League's Convention, there were twelve
representatives from different states that committed themselves to the
formulation of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers. Among those
founders was a woman, Mrs. Naomi Black of Detroit, Michigan.
A year later at the first NAREB® convention held in Atlantic City, New Jersey,
one of the highlights of that convention was the role of women in the National
Association of Real Estate Brokers. At that meeting, it was agreed that women
brokers be recognized officially in two capacities. One of the women
participated in the election process as officers and two as appointed officers in
NAREB®.
By the time the fifties roared in, women were joining NAREB at an alarming
rate. The early fifties indeed gave women inspiration, confidence and hope
for better business opportunities in real estate. It was within this period that
the "Detroit Brokerettes" were formed. The Brokerettes were the "first"
supported group of minority women bonding together to organize a women's
group in real estate. Several members of the Brokerettes aided in the forming
of the Women's Council of NAREB®.
In 1971, in Atlanta, Georgia, at the NAREB’S Annual convention,
Daisy Donavan of Detroit Michigan; Laura Seale of Brooklyn, New York, and
Iris Yateman of Indianapolis, Indiana
founded the Women’s Council of the National Association of Real Estate
Brokers. Officers and bylaws were established and Laura Seale became the
first president of the Women’s Council of NAREB.
Today, women comprise 53 percent of the National Association of Real Estate
Broker's membership with women participating in all divisions and aspects of
the organization.
