During the winter months, cold, dry air 

outdoors and heated air indoors can strip 

your skin of its natural oils, and hot showers 

and baths only enhance the problem. To

His first job in fashion was as a design 

assistant for Cathy Hardwick, followed 

by a designer position at Perry Ellis. 

But his career really took off when he 

joined luxury fashion house Gucci in 

1990. At the time, Gucci was struggling, 

but Ford’s appointment would prove 

transformative. By 1994, he was 

promoted to Creative Director, where 

he was credited with turning around the 

brand’s fortunes through his innovative 

and sexy designs – and remarkably 

revitalising its image. By the late 1990s, 

under Ford’s leadership, Gucci became 

a byword for chic, modern luxury, and 

the company’s value soared.

tends to be drier, so using a moisturiser or

base for your foundation to glide on. 

Opt for a sheer or medium coverage 

foundation that is formulated for mature 

skin. These formulas are often infused

acid or antioxidants to help nourish the

The realm of skincare has witnessed an 

unprecedented surge in the popularity of at-home 

beauty gadgets, particularly those harnessing the 

power of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). No longer 

confined to the confines of a spa or clinic, we can 

now indulge in professional-grade treatments from 

the comfort of our own homes. 

The science behind LED masks is rooted in the 

principles of photobiomodulation, a process that 

uses the power of light to stimulate cellular activity 

and promote healing and rejuvenation. When the 

skin is exposed to specific wavelengths of light, 

it triggers a series of biological reactions that can 

improve various skin conditions. 

LED therapy was initially developed by NASA 

scientists in the early 1990s. Originally used 

for plant growth experiments in space, this 

technology was later adapted to promote wound 

healing in astronauts. The therapeutic benefits 

of LED light, which can penetrate deep into 

body tissue to promote collagen synthesis and 

tissue growth, soon caught the attention of the

HowLED MASKS WORK

The effectiveness of LED therapy is 

backed by numerous studies published 

in some of the world’s most prestigious 

medical journals. These studies highlight 

LEDs’ ability to influence cellular 

behaviour; when exposed to specific 

wavelengths of light, skin cells absorb 

the energy and undergo various cellular 

processes, such as increased circulation 

and enhanced tissue repair. 

Photobiomodulation is the primary 

mechanism by which LED light affects 

skin cells. When specific wavelengths 

of light are absorbed by chromophores 

(light-sensitive molecules) within the 

skin, it triggers a series of biochemical 

reactions. 

LED therapy influences mitochondrial 

activation. Red and near-infrared lights 

are absorbed by the mitochondria, the 

powerhouse of the cell. This absorption 

increases the production of ATP 

(adenosine triphosphate), enhancing the 

cell’s ability to repair and regenerate. 

As well, LED light therapy can reduce 

the production of pro-inflammatory 

cytokines, which are responsible for 

inflammatory responses in the skin. 

This helps in reducing conditions such as 

acne and rosacea. 

At-home LED masks use different 

wavelengths of light to target specific 

skin concerns. The two most common 

types of light used are red, blue and 

near-infrared. 

Red light, known for its anti-ageing 

benefits, penetrates deeper into the 

skin to help boost collagen production, 

reduce inflammation and improve the 

appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. 

Studies have shown that red light 

therapy can significantly improve skin 

texture, reduce the depth of wrinkles and 

increase collagen density. 

Typically used to treat acne, blue light 

targets bacteria that contribute to acne 

formation, helping to reduce breakouts 

and prevent future ones. A study 

published in The Journal of Clinical and 

Aesthetic Dermatology found that blue 

light therapy significantly reduced acne 

after four weeks of treatment. 

Near-infrared light has been shown to 

accelerate wound healing and reduce 

scarring by promoting tissue repair and 

reducing inflammation.

RED LIGHT (620-750 NM) 

Penetration depth: Red light penetrates 

deep into the dermis, the layer of skin

collectively help to reduce fine lines, 

wrinkles and promote overall skin 

rejuvenation. 

Mechanism: Red light boosts

(700-1200 NM) 

Penetration depth: Reaches deeper into 

the skin than red and blue light, affecting
