Thanks to the efforts of local conductor Thomas Lloyd and many area musicians, the sounds of that era can still be heard live today via the London Silver Cornet Band. The all-volunteer group performs free concerts each summer and fall, filling their programs with tunes likely played by their predecessor, the London Saxhorn Band, which was founded in 1855. Lloyd makes the performances especially unique by reading excerpts of old newspaper articles between songs. “This year, we’re highlighting music and events from the summer of 1874, plus some music that might have been played in the early 1900s,” Lloyd said. None of the song selections date past 1914. Lloyd says that’s when a more modern sound took over, and the band’s purpose is to preserve the earlier sound. New play brings Jonathan Alder’s story to stage
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Growing up in Plain City, Danny Rodriguez
Hijo became familiar with the story
of Jonathan Alder, Madison County’s first
white settler.
Hijo learned how members of the
Shawnee tribe kidnapped Alder in Virginia
and took him to Ohio in 1782 when he was
9 years old. He learned how a Mingo warrior
and his Shawnee wife adopted Alder, how
Alder lived as a Native American for the
next 13 years, and how he left that world to
settle near Plain City.
“Over the years, this story has been
something that sparked an interest in me,”
said Hijo, coordinator of PC Trinity Theatre
and a member of the Plain City Music, Arts
& Theatre Society. “I’ve thought about how
best to portray this person and story on
stage and had an epiphany a year ago on
how to do that. Within a month, I had a first
draft done and then went about refining it.”
The result is “The Path of the Pioneer,”
an original play that will premier Aug. 9-10
at Buckeye Brass & Winds, 202 N. Chillicothe
St., Plain City.
While “The Path of the Pioneer” touches
on the kidnapping and Alder’s life with the
Native Americans, the play’s focus is a time
in Alder’s adult life when he searches for a
new purpose and, as a result, what remains
of his birth family.
“He is fresh out of divorce from a Native
American woman and his adoptive parents
have passed away. So, he is by himself for
the first time since his kidnapping and at a
crossroads at what he will do next,” Hijo
said. “He was someone in the area who was
trying to be a peacemaker between Native
American tribes and the settlers. He was
sympathetic to both sides which put him in
an unusual place at the time.”
All nine member of the play’s cast hail
from the Plain City area. Matthew Hirshberg
plays Jonathan Alder, and Jacob
Cameron plays Alder’s friend, John Moore.
Portraying Alder’s family members are: Joel
Mitchell as his brother, Paul; Ally Kaizer as
his sister-in-law, Margaret; Tammy Carlson
as his mother, Hannah; Mack Rowe as his
sister, Ann; and Mikayla Evans as his wife,
Polly. Lucas Gutierrez plays a villager and
the Franklinton postmaster. Hijo rounds
out the cast, playing a farmer.
“I’m very excited to be sharing this piece
with our community about a history many
know the name to but don’t know the actual
history of,” Hijo said.
Tickets are $15 per person and can be
purchased at the door the night of the performances
or at pcmats.ludus.com. Doors
open at 7 p.m. Aug. 9-10. Playgoers are invited
to enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres and
drinks, live jazz piano, and historical displays.
The play starts at 8 p.m. and lasts 50
to 60 minutes.
Among members of the new play, “The Path of the Pioneer,” are: (from left) Matthew Hirshberg
as Jonathan Alder, Tammy Carlson as Alder’s mother, Hannah, Ally Kaizer as
Alder’s sister-in-law, and Joel Mitchell as Alder’s brother. Performances are set for Aug.
9-10 in Plain City.
90-something heroine delivers in sweet, fun film
As our country continues to engage in
heated discourse over the role of senior citizens
in positions of power, there is only
one individual who is capable of uniting
the masses in the battle to become our
overlord: the great June Squibb.
Ever since the actress snagged an Academy Award nomination
for her supporting role as a foul-mouthed octogenarian in Alexander
Payne’s 2013 sleeper hit, “Nebraska,” Squibb has become one of the
world’s most beloved character actors, an elderly woman with razorsharp
wit who steals scenes from major stars and enthralls audiences
everywhere with her presence and comic timing. But like any
worthy “rags to riches” tale, she was not exactly a newcomer when
the indie movie catapulted her into the spotlight.
Decades prior to landing the role that would put her into contention
as a national treasure, Squibb had been steadily honing her
craft on the stage and screen for more than 50 years, just waiting
for that breakout opportunity.
Since she works in the entertainment industry, a place notoriously
averse to allowing women over the age of 35 to have a leading
role in a movie, the Illinois-born actress had to wait until she hit
the age of 92 before she was given a feature-length showcase. What
a showcase it turned out to be.
In “Thelma,” the soon-to-be 95-year-old Squibb is allowed to explore
the range of emotions, feelings, and perils that come with
being a senior citizen, especially one who has been the victim of a
crime. Her character is angry, feisty, funny, and ready to do revenge
on those who crossed her. Under the direction and writing of Josh
Margolin, who based the film and character on his grandmother,
both Squibb and Thelma become a genuine force of nature you want
to rally around.
The film follows Thelma Post (Squibb), a nonagenarian widow
who is living on her own but is regularly visited by her only grandchild,
Danny (Fred Hechinger). Danny always looks forward to seeing
his beloved grandmother, even if she peppers him with
questions about using the computer, how to stream movies so she
can watch “Mission: Impossible,” and how she can link up her cell
Thelma ultimately falls victim to
the real-life grandchildren telephone
herself to find the scammers and recoup her lost money.
It matters little to her that she may have to lie, cheat,
steal, or maybe even kill to exact revenge.
Writing from a mostly comedic perspective, Margolin
is nonetheless unafraid to explore the realities and perils
of those who are at an advanced age. While undertaking
her mission, Thelma knows a hard fall could
spell disaster, yet she climbs several flights of stairs to
steal a gun from a friend’s home. She knows she has to
take pills to keep her blood pressure steady, yet she continuously
exerts herself to get to the business that has
the post office box inside.
Under a different director or screenwriter, this movie
could have gone to a place that pokes fun at Thelma and
her somewhat willing partner-in-crime/old friend, Ben
(the late Richard Roundtree), for their declining mental
and physical prowess, but their advanced ages and capabilities
are never treated as a joke. Perhaps it is because
Margolin wrote the script as a love letter to his
grandmother, or perhaps it is because all of the actors
treat their real and fictional counterparts with equal
parts exasperation and tenderness. There is a real sensitivity
and warmth to this movie. It’s kind of like a
sweet hug with a soft pinch on the cheek afterward.
I have no way to do that, however, I
am sure there are people in the community
who have the means to accomplish
that. The sign appears to be in very good condition.
London Rotary Club is changing things up
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
The London Rotary Club is changing things up, meeting less
often and adding more recognition of local do-gooders.
For as long as anyone can remember, the longstanding civic organization
has met every Thursday at lunchtime. Susan Thompson,
the club’s new president, is trying something different.
“Over the years, the reasons that I hear most for why folks don’t
join Rotary is that we have too many meetings, and people can’t always
make a lunch meeting,” she said.
So, Rotary has switched to meeting twice a month. On the second
Thursday, they meet at noon at the Madison County Senior Center,
280 W. High St., London. On the fourth Thursday of the month, they
meet at 7:30 a.m. at Sovereign Village, 305 Patriot Circle, London.
As always, the one-hour meetings include a meal and a guest
speaker or special recognition. Recently, Ned DeCamp, director of
the Madison County Historical Society Museum, shared tidbits
about the community’s past. At the first meeting in July, the club
presented a total of $5,000 in donations to local charitable organizations.
“The speakers provide a great glimpse into our wonderful community,
and the networking amongst our membership is an added
bonus,” Thompson said.
During the school year, the club reserves its first meeting of the
month for recognizing Students of the Month from London and Madison-Plains
high schools. Once a year, the club hosts Rural-Urban
Day, inviting area farmers and the public to enjoy a free breakfast,
guest speaker, and presentation of the Joe Yoder Award to a local
agricultural leader. The club also presents the annual Paul Harris
Fellow Award to someone who has made outstanding contributions
to the community and donates $1,000 in that person’s name to Rotary
International. Earlier this year, the club honored the late Kelso Wessel
and the late Steve Saltsman, donating a total of $2,000.
Next year, the club will add another award to its slate of recognitions,
choosing someone to be the first recipient of the Steve Saltsman
Service Above Self First Responder Award. Saltsman served
many years as the Madison County sheriff and was a longtime Rotary
Club member. The presentation will take place at the club’s
Feb. 13 meeting.
One of London Rotary’s main fundraisers is Breakfast with
Santa which is set for Dec. 7 this year. The group also runs the concession
stand during the London City Schools annual STEAM Festival,
donating proceeds to PolioPlus, Rotary International’s
BAND
Continued from page 1
in 1870 when they replaced the saxhorns with cornets and trombones.
Other additions over the years have included piccolo and
clarinets. Lloyd added saxophones to approximate the sounds of instruments
no longer commonly found these days, including the
tenor horn and E-flat/small tuba.
Many of the members have been with the band for a long time,
while some are fairly new to the group.
“Our age range goes from a recent high school graduate to an
89-year-old. They sit next to each other,” Lloyd said.
Several of the musicians hail from London and are joined by enthusiasts
from Columbus with ties to Lloyd’s days as an instructor
at Columbus State University.
As for what might attract people to playing in a band with a
repertoire well over a century old, Lloyd said, “It’s different enough
and small enough that everybody feels important. We have quite a
core of people who continue to want to play and people who enjoy
playing together.”
About the band’s significance, Lloyd added, “We’re an important
part of the community. We’re preserving the past the way you go to
a museum, only our museum is live.”
The London Silver Cornet Band has two more performances
scheduled for this year. They will play on Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. at the
Cowling Park gazebo, North High Street. In the case of bad
Each year, the London Rotary Club makes donations to local non-profit organizations. This year’s recipients included:
(front row, from left) Christina Finney, Connie Dwyer, Bonnie Hamilton, and Sue Hackett representing the
Martha Geib Memorial Cruise-in; (back row, from left) Misty Bradley with the Madison County Senior Center; Kerry
Pedraza with United Way/Power of the Purse; Tim Wilson with the Madison County Arts Council; Susan Thompson
with Madison County Special Olympics; Ginger Kronk with the Madison Health Foundation; and Dr. Lou Kramer
with London City Schools’ Raider Rack. Donations also were made to the Salvation Army and Loving Care Hospice.
program to eradicate polio around the world.
Anyone interested in joining the London Rotary Club
is asked to attend a couple of meetings and fill out an
application. Dues are $125 per year. Meals are $12.
As for why people should consider joining, Thompson
said, “It’s a group of people who truly are compassionate
weather, the concert will take place inside London First
Presbyterian Church, 211 Garfield Ave. The band also
will play on Sept. 29 at 3 p.m. as part of Pioneer Days
about those around them. They are gracious and kind
people. Plus, the meetings are informative and educational.”
TREMAYNE
Mary Beth (Gaston) Tremayne, 71, went to her heavenly home
on July 30, 2024, after over a five-year valiant battle with cancer.
Born in Muskegon, Michigan, on Sept. 20, 1952, Mary leaves behind
a legacy of love, laughter, gratitude, and compassion. She was an
extraordinary individual who touched the lives of all fortunate
enough to know her. As a proud mother, doting grandmother (also
affectionately known as “Mimi”), caring sister, supportive aunt, inspiring
mentor, and loyal friend, Mary embodied the true spirit of
faith, family, and community. Mary’s love for people and the joy of
togetherness were cornerstones of her character. She had a special
place in her heart for all people, always ready to offer support and
a helping hand to those in need. Her kindness and empathy knew
no bounds.
An avid hobbyist and collector, Mary found beauty in the simplest
things. She particularly enjoyed combing the shores of the
Great Lakes for unique stones and beach glass, building a collection
that reflected her appreciation for nature’s beauty. Her artistic flair
and curiosity led her to tackle various creative challenges, constantly
exploring new ways to express herself. Her home stands as
a gallery of her creations and collections, while her yard blossomed
into a botanical garden. Mary’s zest for life shone brightest in her
devotion to family and friends. She treasured gatherings, filling
them with laughter and warmth. Through her actions, Mary powerfully
demonstrated the vital importance of these connections,
leaving an enduring impact on all who shared in her joyful circle.
Her adventurous spirit radiated through in her travels with her
beloved husband, Paul, her sisters, family, and friends, creating
memories that will be treasured forever.
For many years, Mary was a dedicated employee of London
Schools, where she was a tremendous advocate for both students
and staff. Her commitment to education and nurturing young minds
left an indelible mark on the community. Mary was loved deeply
because she loved deeply. Her warmth, generosity, gratitude, and
infectious enthusiasm for life will be profoundly missed by all who
had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind a world made
brighter by her presence and a legacy that will continue to inspire
for generations to come.
She is survived by: her loving husband, Paul, of almost 50 years;
her sons, Jeffrey (Cynthia) Tremayne, Mark (Alicia) Tremayne, and
Scott (Angela) Tremayne; her eight grandchildren whom she was
so proud of, Dylan, Jordan, Olivia, Emmelia, Brady, Raegan, Paxton,
Holden; as well as her amazing extended family, including her
precious sisters and brothers-in-love; many very dear nieces and
nephews; and numerous deeply loved friends who became family.
A celebration of life was held on Aug. 4 at Eberle-Fisher Funeral
Home, London, followed by a luncheon at Union Township Hall,
London.
Mary’s wish was that donations be made to The OSU Martha
Tolles ELITE lets students try out professions
Olivia Acus
Recent London High School graduate
Olivia Acus started her senior year last fall
uncertain about what profession she wanted
to pursue. She had an interest in health
care, but that’s a field with a plethora of different
paths.
Through the Experiential Learning in
Technical Education (ELITE) program at
Tolles Career and Technical Center, Acus
was able to get hands-on, in-depth experience
in two diverse health care settings before
she graduated. For her, that made all
the difference.
“This program truly gave me opportunities I would
have never had without it,” Acus said. “It made my senior
year a lot less stressful and gave me the security I
needed in deciding my after-graduation plans.”
For Acus, these opportunities consisted of back-toback
internships during her senior year, the first at
Riverside Methodist Hospital in the Radiology Department
and the second at Precision Family Dental in
Hilliard. Acus earned course credits towards graduation
by completing each internship.
“It helped me choose a career path because I was able
to see the different paces that each establishment works
at and the different skills and talents each job requires,”
Acus said.
At Riverside, she shadowed areas including X-Ray,
ultrasound, MRI, and trauma and interacted with patients.
At Precision, she shadowed the dental hygienist,
dental assistants, and dentist, observing everything
from routine cleanings and fillings to crowns and wisdom
teeth removal.
“During both of the internships, I was able to practice
customer service skills and communication with patients,”
she said. “I also learned proper sterilization
techniques in order to ensure every patient stays safe
and healthy.”
The dramatic differences between the two workplaces
made choosing a career path much easier for
Acus, who is now enrolled at Sinclair Community College
in Dayton where she will start the dental
hygiene program this fall.
“I was able to decide without any doubts
what career I wanted to pursue after I graduated,”
she said. “The ELITE program is
truly an amazing opportunity, and I am very
grateful I was able to be a part of it.”
Steve Cawley, internship coordinator for
Tolles, said that’s the whole point of the program.
“It’s an opportunity to go out and get a
taste of a career-level position you’re interested
in to see whether this is really something you may
want to do,” Cawley said.
The ELITE program is open to seniors attending
high schools in Dublin, Fairbanks, Hilliard, Jonathan
Alder, London, Madison-Plains, and West Jefferson.
Those accepted into the program are matched with a
non-retail position at a central Ohio business based on
their unique interests and skill sets. Students can enroll
in ELITE for one semester or their entire senior year.
“They can stay with the same employer for the whole
year or change employers at the break,” Cawley explained,
noting ELITE students also can earn one elective
credit at their home high school if they work 180
hours in a semester.
ELITE offers four scheduling options—morning, afternoon,
outside of school hours, and weekends—that can
be mixed and matched to suit the mutual needs of the
student and employer. Although some internships are
unpaid, like Acus’s two placements, most students can
“earn and learn,” bringing home paychecks in addition
to their report cards.
“These are substantial learning opportunities, not
just shadowing,” said Kim Hull, support specialist for
the ELITE program. “These students are being given
real projects and tasks from our business partners.”
Students log weekly hours on a time sheet that must
be signed by the employer. Employers complete a quarterly
progress report, rating competencies the student
has displayed on the job, such as work attitude, organizational
skills, teamwork, communication, attendance, and following
policies/procedures.
Seniors interested in the ELITE program must have a 95 percent
attendance rate at their home high school, have no record of major
discipline issues, have a minimum 2.5 grade point average, be on
track to graduate, maintain a grade of C or better in all classes, get a
recommendation from their guidance counselor or school administrator,
and provide their own transportation to and from the workplace.
Splash pad opens
The village of South Charleston opened
its new splash pad, “Village Splash,” on July
25. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
daily through the summer season. The
splash pad is located next to Community
Park.
Fencing, the last bit of new construction
for the area, was completed last week.
“We still have a few things to do to be
able to say that the facility is complete,” said
Trecia Waring, village manager. “The grass
has been seeded and is coming along quite
nicely, even though we do have some equipment
still coming in and out. Over the winter,
we will be painting and updating the
restroom facility. Portable potties will be on
site until the area is closed for the season.”
In the fall, the village will patch and seal
coat the parking lot, after which parking
spot striping will be painted and blocks installed.
“We are also investigating our options regarding
the pressure and volume of water
at the pad,” Waring said. “So, we still have
a lot of work to do, but we are getting closer
to the finish line.”
Waring hopes to hold a grand opening for
the splash pad at the start of next season.
Aug. 7: Coffee
& Conversation
Once a month, South Charleston’s village
manager and police chief, and often one of
the village commissioners, invite the public
to chat with them informally at one of the
shops in town. The idea of “Coffee and Conversation”
is to offer a casual atmosphere in
which anyone can feel comfortable sharing
concerns, ideas, or praise about village government
business. The next session is set
for Aug. 7 at 8 a.m. at Village Cup, 17 S.
Chillicothe St.
Legion Cruise-in
set for Aug. 24
South Charleston American Legion Post
176 will hold its 30th annual cruise-in from
4 to 8 pm. Aug. 24 at South Charleston
Community Park.
As always, admission is free for spectators
and cruise-in participants. All makes,
Community fun
South Charleston area first responders participated in a community
event on July 20 that included a Touch-a-Truck display,
car show, food trucks, and soft opening of the village’s new
splash pad.
come. The show attracted approximately 83 vehicles last year.
South Charleston resident Tony Cooper will serve as DJ for the
event, spinning tunes from the 1950s to today. Door prizes and a
50/50 drawing are planned, and the Legion will serve up pork chop
dinners and more.
Dinners include a porkchop, baked beans, and choice of potato
salad or macaroni salad. Customers also can order single porkchops
with no sides.
Proceeds go to the Legion Post 176/Rick Woods scholarship fund
which distributes $4,000 to $5,000 each year to graduating Southeastern
High School students.
The car show is one of the Legion’s main fundraisers. The organization
also holds a golf scramble in May, sells food during the
South Charleston Heritage Days Festival, and holds a cookout during
harvest season.
Festival slated for Sept. 28
The South Charleston Heritage Commission will hold its annual
Heritage Days Festival on Sept. 28. Organizers are accepting signups
for vendors. Spaces are 10x10 feet and cost $35. Vendors will
