King’s Speech
“Government action…more than needed
on apprenticeships” says Easy2Recruit
Proposed changes to the way
apprenticeships are run in
England, along with reforms to the
Apprenticeship Levy announced in the
Kings Speech yesterday (Wednesday 17th
July) have been welcomed by automotive
sector recruiter Easy2Recruit. However,
CEO and founder Ambi Singh also warned
that it is businesses in the automotive
sector themselves that need to take
action to boost recruitment.
The Skills England Bill was announced
in the King’s Speech in Parliament
yesterday, with the intention of bring
together businesses, providers, unions
and other stakeholders to boost skills
training and tackle skills shortages in a
new Skills England body, replacing the
existing Institute For Apprenticeships
and Technical Education (IFATE). The
Apprenticeship Levy is also set to be
reformed.
“Government action is more than
needed on apprenticeships,” said Ambi
Singh, “which is one of the main reasons
why the sector is facing a recruitment
black hole as we approach 2030. Garages
must also play their part though.”
Apprenticeship take-up in the
automotive sector remains sluggish.
According to figures from the Institute
of the Motor Industry (IMI), there were
5,500 automotive apprenticeship starts
in the first six months of the academic
year 2023/24, 6% lower than during
the previous year. However, this was 8%
higher than in the same period in 2021/22.
While funding and support have been
made available, garages are still holding
back on this traditional training format.
“I understand why independent garages
remain hesitant on apprenticeships,” said
Ambi. “Taking on an apprentice is a longterm
investment. There also needs to be
oversight; an apprentice isn’t going to be
working independently for a number of
years. Then there is the added cost of the
salary.”
Advancements in technology are also
having an impact. More figures from the
IMI point towards 21,000 vacancies and
serious skill shortages specifically around
EVs and ADAS. “With the rise of EVs,”
said Ambi, “and the added challenges
presented by technology such as ADAS,
the sector needs to increase the number
of staff coming through. Apprenticeships
are a great way to train future staff. Young
people learn on-the-job, and this enables
garages to mentor and grow future
technicians in the way they want.”
Increasing apprentice numbers will
benefit the whole industry, as well as
individual garages, but it will take time to
bring these technicians through. In the
meantime, garages still need to make sure
they have enough staff on a day-to-day
basis.
This is why Easy2Recruit has been
helping automotive businesses access
skilled workers from the United Arab
Emirates (UAE) and India. “We deal with
the relocation from overseas all the
way to the garage in the UK,” said Ambi.
“The owner of the garage just has to
undertake a video interview with the
candidate. We handle all the pastoral
care for the overseas worker, including
visa application, flight booking and
accommodation. Ultimately, we prepare
the route for the first day at work.”
staffing solutions, garages should visit:
Garage Association
Welcomes
Stuart James, CEO of the Independent Garage Association
The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has
responded to the King’s Speech. The speech
outlined the government’s legislative programme,
focusing on security, fairness, and opportunity for all,
with measures to boost economic growth, improve
corporate governance, and enhance employment rights.
Stuart James, CEO of the Independent Garage
Association, said: “We welcome the government’s
focus on economic stability and its recognition of the
important role that small and medium-sized enterprises
(SMEs) such as Independent Garages play in the UK
economy.”
“The creation of Skills England and the reforms to the
apprenticeship levy are particularly important for our
sector. We are eager to continue our discussions with
the new government, hoping to advance positive changes
and support for our industry.”
“The Employment Rights Bill’s plans to ban exploitative
practices and enhance employment rights are significant.
The Independent Garage Association is ready to
work with the government to ensure these measures
effectively support both employers and employees in our
sector. Together, we can create a thriving environment
where independent garages continue to grow and
contribute to the wealth and stability of communities
across the UK.”
The IGA remains dedicated to supporting independent
garages and ensuring they have the resources needed
to adapt to the changing economic landscape. We
will continue to engage with policymakers to ensure
the independent garage sector’s voice is heard and
selecting their preferred digital light signature from up to eight
preset designs
● The appearance of the Matrix LED headlamps can therefore be
personalised to a high degree
The international automotive supplier
FORVIA HELLA has developed a
completely new headlamp concept
for the Q6 e-tron in collaboration with the
German premium manufacturer Audi. Its
speciality: The front lighting not only realises
adaptive lighting functions such as glare-free
high beam. Above all, it has a digital daytime
running light matrix that allows end users to
select their preferred digital light signature
for the daytime running light from up to eight
preset designs. The appearance of the Matrix
LED headlamps can therefore be personalised
to a high degree.
“Audi and FORVIA HELLA are breaking new
ground with the headlight concept for the
Q6 e-tron. LED lighting signatures have long
been indispensable for the characteristic,
emotional design language of vehicles”,
says Yves Andres, who is responsible for the
global lighting business at FORVIA HELLA
as a member of the Management Board.
“However, with the concept that we have
brought into series production together
with Audi for the Q6 e-tron, we are now
opening up new degrees of freedom for end
consumers to help shape the appearance of
the vehicle front.”
For the front lighting of the Q6 e-tron,
FORVIA HELLA has developed a headlamp
concept that visually divides the lighting
elements into two areas based on the
design of the bodywork. The lower area is
primarily responsible for “seeing”: Matrix
LED headlamps consisting of 14 LEDs realise
glare-free high beam, i.e. driving with the
high beam permanently switched on without
dazzling oncoming traffic. The upper element,
on the other hand, is used to display “being
seen”, the digital daytime running lights with
the associated design and customisation
functions. Each headlamp has a digital
daytime running light matrix consisting of
61 individually switchable segments, which
create the customisable digital light signature
of the Audi Q6 e-tron.
The daytime running light designs created
by the manufacturer, which also include
specially customised Coming Home/Leaving
Home scenes, can then be selected by the
end user according to their own preferences
via a software-based app or the fully electric
SUV’s Multi Media Interface (MMI).
The matrix LED headlamps are produced
in the Czech Republic, and a local version
for the Chinese market is also manufactured
in China. Series development takes place in
Germany and the Czech Republic.
Oldfields Garage rallies aftermarket support
for local Young Drivers Experience
L-R/ Diana Wood of ELY Memorial
Fund, Tim Benson of Oldfields Garage
and Ange Tyler of ELY Memorial Fund
Leominster-based Oldfields Garage has rallied the support of the UK automotive aftermarket
ahead of the ELY Young Drivers Experience, an event organised by The ELY Memorial Fund
aimed at educating 14 to 17 year-olds in Herefordshire on road safety.
Held at Herefordshire, Ludlow &
North Shropshire College on 23
- 26 July, the event includes two
hours of driving on a controlled course.
Interactive workshops are also being held
to cover basic car maintenance, first aid
and a demonstration on the effects of
alcohol and drugs by West Mercia Police.
Offering his expertise on the
importance of vehicle maintenance, Tim
Benson of Oldfields Garage will deliver a
series of talks throughout the duration of
the event.
“Educating teenagers about vehicle
maintenance aligns perfectly with the
fund’s commitment to promoting safe
driving practices in our community,” said
Tim Benson of Oldfields Garage.
In support of Tim’s efforts, Castrol,
PAGID, and Ring are each contributing
freebies for those attending his talks.
Additionally, national parts supplier LKQ
Euro Car Parts is providing a selection
of parts, allowing the children to see the
components firsthand as Tim explains their
relevance to road safety.
“Regular vehicle maintenance is crucial
for road safety because it ensures that
your car operates at its best,” said Tim.
“From brakes and tyres to lights and fluids,
every component plays a role in keeping
you and others safe on the road.
“At Oldfields Garage, we emphasise the
importance of proactive maintenance to
prevent breakdowns and maintain optimal
performance, ultimately contributing to
safer roads.”
The ELY Memorial Fund was established
in memory of Emma Louise Young, who
tragically lost her life in a road traffic
collision at just 23. It helps families in
Herefordshire facing financial difficulties
after losing a child in a road traffic
collision. The fund also focuses on
improving road safety for young drivers to
reduce accidents in this age group.
Ange Tyler, founder of The ELY Memorial
Fund and mother of Emma, said: “We
are hugely grateful to Tim who has
offered his support to help our Young
Drivers Experience, along with his wider
connections in the motor industry. We are
all committed to stop the unnecessary
road deaths within the age group 17-25.
Educating them at the age 14-17 will give
them life skills as they start to learn to
drive.”
Such is the community’s enthusiasm for
the ELY Young Drivers Experience, tickets
have now sold-out.
Ben is here for families
unable to afford food &
living costs this summer
Automotive industry charity, Ben, is raising awareness about the support
currently being provided to automotive individuals and families who are
struggling with money worries, debt or urgent financial need.
Due to the continued cost-of-living
pressures, Ben is providing vital
support for many automotive
families who would otherwise have to
make impossible choices such as whether
to put food on the table or pay essential
bills.
Over the past 12 months, Ben’s helpline
has managed nearly 16,000 enquiries
and administered over 600 financial
grants for those struggling with money.
In addition, Ben’s support services team
have provided hundreds of automotive
individuals with financial information,
advice and guidance to help them get
back on track with their finances, as well
as support them with the wider impact
on their mental health and emotional
wellbeing. In the last year, the demand for
Ben’s services and support has grown by
over 15%.
Money worries often have a knock-on
effect on people’s mental health and
wellbeing. According to Ben’s research , 7
in 10 of our automotive family worry about
money and these people are more likely to
experience feelings of anxiety, low mood
and depression. Year on year, the number
of people worrying about money has
increased (from 6 in 10), debt increased
by 3% (19% to 22%), being unable to
budget increased by 12% (14% to 26%) and
skipping meals increased by 6% (10% to
16%).
With the summer holidays approaching,
this time of year can be a real headache
for parents. Additional costs add up over
the holiday period and back-to-school
items such as uniforms, bags and PE
kits add financial pressure. Ben is urging
automotive families not to struggle alone
and to get in touch.
Families who Ben has already supported
have recently said:
“Ben’s support has been amazing, thank
you for making a real difference in our
household. You have absolutely no idea
how much this has meant to us after the
year we’ve had.”
“The food vouchers will make an amazing
difference to the whole family. It’s been
a long road this year. Although we’ve had
lows, you’ve given us some great highs,
especially for the family. You have been a
great support.”
ONKAR CHAHAL
BEING A MASTER
TECHNICIAN
You’ll never reach perfection,
but you can strive for it
every day. And that’s when
you become
a Master.
By Onkar Chahal
Being a Master Technician sounds
impressive, right? I say it with pride,
knowing that I earnt that right after
almost 35 years in the trade, working for
some serious names. RAC, BMW, JLR, I
couldn’t work for the AA as they didn’t
have enough letters!
But what does that title mean exactly?
Simple. It means you’ll get the job done
right the first time, in a prompt and
professional manner. It means no excuses.
It means trust me; I know what I’m doing.
For me it also means you know the history
of the brand and an in depth knowledge of
not just what you are doing, but how and
why. You should know the temperature,
angle, pressure or position of the system
you are working on.
But it doesn’t mean I didn’t make
mistakes along the way.
I remember changing the oil on a Renault
21 Monaco that I sold as a trainee at
a small garage I worked at when I left
college. I was proud of the fact that I
prepped the car for sale upon its arrival
and dealt with the customer who left the
deposit on it. I thought I’d complete the
sale by servicing it before it went out, thus
proving to the whole team that I could do
it all. Or so I thought.
I changed the air filter as the oil drained,
I then checked the amount of oil needed
to refill it and poured that amount in.
When I checked the dipstick the oil didn’t
register, so I added another litre, then
another, then another. I got to 9 litres
before I thought hold on, I’m missing
something here? I looked under the car
and saw very quickly what the problem
was. The oil was going straight out the
bottom into the drain bucket as I had
forgotten to refit the sump plug!
Or how about the time I left a wheel
loose as I answered my phone during a
job?
After the conversation I thought I had
tightened the nuts up correctly, only to
hear them rattle on the road test. Never
answered the phone during a job after
that.
Or the fuel pump I condemned without
checking the fuse that had failed?
Always check the basics after that one!
How about the Rover 620ti that drove
through a flood and locked up? I called
it as a starter motor fault before getting
it back to base and watched water being
fired out of the spark plug holes! That was
the first time I had experienced hydraulic
locking and it’s something that you just
don’t forget.
Essentially what I’m saying is I’ve learnt
from every job I’ve done. I’ve learnt how to
do it quickly or efficiently as well as how
not to do it.
And that’s my point. If you go through
life doing the same thing, the same way,
you will get the same results. If you reflect
upon what you have just done and analyse
it in a dispassionate way, you’ll be able
to see what you done well and what you
could do better next time.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a routine service,
talking to customers or prepping a car for
sale. If you look at what you do and how
you done it, you’ll become better at it. I
analyse every journey I make, every car I
diagnose, every repair I carryout. I look
at how I changed gear, when I changed
them as well as how I took the last bend
or indicated at the roundabout. I’ll think
did I have to remove all the trims to get
to the cam sensor, or could I just loosen
something off to move it enough.
You’ll never reach perfection, but you
can strive for it every day. And that’s when
you become a Master.
The Motor
Ombudsman
marks 15 years
of the Vehicle
Warranty
Products Code
serving the
automotive
sector
The Vehicle Warranty Products Code
was launched to the public on 14th
July 2009, with the primary objective
of driving standards even higher in the
management and administration of
extended vehicle warranty policies to
customersd vehicle warranty policies
to customers
The Code is formed of 60 different
guidelines which businesses adhere
to as part of their accreditation,
spanning point of sale obligations, to
the effective handling of customer
complaints
Accreditation grants a suite of benefits
to warranty providers, including
all-important access to The Motor
Ombudsman’s in-house, impartial
and automotive-specific Alternative
Dispute Resolution (ADR) service
The Motor Ombudsman, the
Ombudsman dedicated to
the automotive sector, is
commemorating 15 years since its Motor
Industry Code of Practice for Vehicle
Warranty Products was unveiled to the
public in 2009. The Code was launched
with the principal aim of driving standards
even higher in the provision of extended
vehicle warranty products to motorists,
and evolved from the former Code of
Practice for Mechanical Breakdown
Insurance Schemes.
Since its inception a decade and a half
ago, the portfolio of businesses adhering
to the Chartered Trading Standards
Institute-approved Code has grown to
a total of 18 organisations – the largest
ever number to be accredited at any one
time, covering around three-quarters
of the industry’s major providers. The
scope of the Code of Practice spans both
insurance and non-insurance backed
extended warranties, but equally extends
to service contracts, roadside assistance
and insurance for items such as keys, alloy
wheels and tyres.
The comprehensive Code, which is
unrivalled in the sector, is comprised of 60
different guidelines, which organisations
pledge their commitment to as part of
their accreditation. These cover the
publishing of clear, concise, jargon-free
and accurate communications, including
advertising and policy literature, offering
tailored advice and information to vehicle
Motor Ombudsman’s independent and fully
impartial automotive-specific Alternative Dispute
Resolution (ADR) service should concerns not
be resolved between the two parties in the first
instance.
In the full calendar years that followed The
Motor Ombudsman’s foundation in 2016, the
motoring authority has received in excess of
22,500 contacts from consumers up until the
end of 2023, in relation to an extended warranty
product. During the same period, over 2,200
new cases were accepted for adjudication i.e.
those which fall within the remit of the Code
of Practice, and which relate to an accredited
business. Common breaches of the Code by
businesses have related to potentially unclear
information being provided to policyholders, and
customers not having a full understanding of the
terms and conditions at the point of sale and
making a claim, due to the standard of material
provided.
In addition to being able to call on The Motor
Ombudsman for assistance with bringing disputes
to a close, accreditation brings a number of
exclusive benefits and opportunities for warranty
provider head offices.
These include the ability to attend The Motor
Ombudsman’s Code committee and industry
round-tables, exclusive webinars and events,
and to be profiled on The Motor Ombudsman’s
popular website (TheMotorOmbudsman.org).
Warranty providers are equally eligible to be
nominated by policyholders for one of the
coveted Motor Ombudsman Customer Service
Star Awards, which are now open for submissions
until mid-October. The accolades have been
geared to put businesses and individual team
members in the spotlight, after going above and
beyond the call of duty in the eyes of consumers.
Bill Fennell, Chief Ombudsman and Managing
Director of The Motor Ombudsman, said: “We are
delighted to be celebrating this notable milestone
for our Vehicle Warranty Products Code across
our organisation, and with businesses. The
Code of Practice has served as an important
cornerstone of the extended vehicle warranty
market since it was first unveiled 15 years ago,
and has been paramount in driving standards
even higher in the provision and management of
these popular policies for today’s motorists.”
Bill added: “To be approaching a portfolio
of nearly 20 accredited businesses, highlights
the great value that many of the industry’s key
players place in being a part of the Code, and
we look forward to expanding this portfolio
going forward, so that it provides even greater
coverage for consumers taking out an extended
warranty.”
Banner makes finding
the correct battery easy
When it comes to automotive battery replacement, and against a backdrop of it no
longer being a case of one-size fits all, ensuring the correct and optimum battery by
vehicle type is used is of paramount importance.
Why? Because perhaps the single
most significant challenge facing
suppliers of automotive batteries
relates to incorrect use and the fitment of
the wrong battery type, particularly when
it comes to start-stop applications.
So with such technology now firmly
established in the aftermarket, indeed
when it comes to Banner GB AGM is now
the second most popular seller, this is
more important than ever.
The good news is that finding the
correct battery by application is not
only fundamentally important, but easier
than ever before. It is here that suppliers
such as Banner remain keen to actively
promote tools such as its online portal
www.bannerbatteryfinder.co.uk.
Such a system is very easy to use, where
garage technicians need to enter the
relevant vehicle registration into a novel
‘number plate’ shaped window and the
search facility does the rest. As well as
displaying the relevant Banner battery for
the vehicle in question, supplementary
information is presented in the form of
the relevant part number, capacity, power
rating and Suggested Selling Price (SSP),
inc VAT.
Additionally, when visiting the portal,
users immediately get the opportunity
to receive Banner’s monthly bulletin via
a website pop-up, ensuring they receive
the latest news, articles and features
relating to lead-acid batteries and their
ongoing significance in today’s automotive
aftermarket.
Latest features
Switching back to the portal itself, the
system incorporates a number of further
features designed to make the life of
those who are called on to replace car
batteries as simple and straight forward as
possible.
Leading the refinements is the inclusion
of comprehensive information relating to
a battery’s exact location on the vehicle.
No longer is it simply a case of looking
under the bonnet. Knowing the correct
location from the outset will undoubtedly
prove beneficial.
Detailed fitting instructions. Step by
step, the portal is on hand to ensure that
battery removal and replacement is as
seamless and stress free as possible.
Battery diagnostics. Check out all
aspects of best practice and what is
required when it comes to the field of
diagnostics.
Enhanced technical information. Full
technical data is on hand in an easy-tounderstand
and clearly presented format.
Commenting on the Battery Finder
and website pop-up, Country Manager,
Lee Quinney said: “Whilst the Banner
Battery Finder is widely accepted across
our motor factor customer base, our aim
is to promote its presence and simple
functionality to a wider audience, garages
in particular, whilst also giving them the
opportunity to make their voices heard
by engaging with Banner via its regular
e-bulletin.
“Indeed with batteries being far
more vehicle specific than ever, the
importance of selecting the right battery
for a particular vehicle has never been
more consequential. This tool makes the
process fool proof, which is something
you should expect from a company that
stands as an OE supplier to such leading
vehicle manufacturers such as Aston
Martin, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche,
Skoda and VW,” he added.
in Autowave’s history
Autowave, a leading provider of car keys and programming equipment, is delighted
to announce a new distribution agreement with FPS, one of the UK’s premier parts
providers. The partnership marks a significant milestone in Autowave’s history and
supports its mission in delivering same-day car key supplies nationwide.
Under the terms of the agreement, FPS now offers a wide
range of Autowave products, including remotes, keys,
transponder chips, remote cases, key programming
devices, key-cutting machines and blades.
The collaboration is set to enhance service efficiency for
locksmiths, motor factors, and garages across the UK. FPS
customers now benefit from same-day delivery available on over
400 of the bestselling lines. Overall, there are 1,500 product lines
accessible through the FPS national network.
What’s included in the range:
Profitable opportunity
The modest cost of a remote key through FPS enables motor
factors to achieve excellent profit margins. Autowave’s financial
model represents substantial revenue potential, benefiting
independent workshops that purchase from FPS-supplied motor
factors. Both FPS and Autowave are confident, therefore, that
this new agreement will facilitate mutual growth and success
throughout the supply chain.
As Autowave’s network expands, workshops and locksmiths
will increasingly be able to order and receive products from
their local motor factor on the same day. This arrangement also
removes the need for these businesses to hold stock in-house; it
will save space and increase convenience. Promisingly, they won’t
have to turn down jobs due to a lack of available keys.
“Delighted to join forces”
Autowave CEO, Ravi Kotecha, expressed his delight at securing
a deal with FPS: “We are thrilled to join forces with FPS. Its
reputation, dedication to quality and customer service aligns
perfectly with our values. This agreement will significantly expand
our reach and enable us to better serve our customers across
the UK.”
Alliance Automotive Group Head of Category, Natalie Kurek,
echoed this sentiment: “Partnering with Autowave allows us to
offer our customers an even wider array of premium products.
We are excited about the opportunities this partnership brings
and are confident it will lead to enhanced customer satisfaction
and business growth.”
Original REPXPERT Millionaire
bonus points winner splashes out
on workwear and training
Markhams Garage in Herefordshire was the first ever REPXPERT Bonus Point
Millionaire winner back in 2023. The prize has funded a full set of staff workwear
as well as Garage Inspector training courses.
A
100-year-old village garage in
Herefordshire that was the first-ever
REPXPERT Bonus Point Millionaire
winner in 2023 has already spent the
whole of its million-point prize haul on a
mix of workwear and training.
Markhams Garage was named as the
inaugural winner in the ongoing promotion
in May 2023. The 10-bay garage has
been at the centre of the community in
Kingsland, just outside Leominster, since
first opening in October 1924. Fielding
eight staff, the garage is led by a team of
four directors, including Simon Powney.
“How we’ve managed spend all the points
already,” said Simon, “I just don’t know!”
Each time a REPXPERT member uses
the app to claim their bonus points
during promotional periods, by scanning
the unique OneCode QR code on every
LuK, INA or FAG product box, they
automatically receive an entry into the
next prize draw to win one million bonus
points.
Once they had received their winnings,
the Markhams Garage team headed online
to the REPXPERT Bonus Shop. “The first
thing we decided to do was buy new
corporate workwear,” said Simon. “Polo
shirts, t-shirts, trousers, jackets and body
warmers; a complete kit. The uniforms are
all REPXPERT branded, but as we ordered
so many, Schaeffler arranged to have the
Markhams Garage logo put on them too.
“We still had some points left after that,
so we asked Schaeffler what training we
could get with it. They spoke with their
ambassador, Andy Savva, who offered us
places on his Garage Inspector leadership,
quality management and front of house
essentials course, which two of us will be
attending in Gloucester in October. We
consider this to be a very worthwhile use
of our million points.”
The REPXPERT app continues to be
a pivotal portal for the team, offering
up technical information and more.
“Everything is changing,” said Simon.
“Even though we’re in the countryside,
we’re still connected. Thanks to the
REPXPERT app, we can get hold of all
the relevant product and technical
information we need, exactly when we
need it.”
The REPXPERT Bonus Point Millionaire
promotion continues throughout 2024,
with products scanned during the July/
August promotional period being entered
into the prize draw. The third and final
promotional period will take place in
November and December.
“Everyone who enters has the chance
of becoming a REPXPERT Millionaire,”
said Jeff Earl, Marketing Communications
simply scan the OneCode and collect your
an ongoing problem for technicians as the complexity of
modern vehicles makes diagnosing fault lights and accessing
secure gateways increasingly difficult.
Managing director, Iain Molloy, said: “We’re now seeing
workshops struggle with something as basic as resetting the
service light on a VW ID3. A garage may feel its only option is to
take the vehicle to a main dealer, but this can easily add a week
or two onto what should be a 5-minute job.
“We’re changing the game for garages and bodyshops by
working with them to make jobs that once took days, take
minutes.
“By combining our A1 Remote Diagnostics service, and our A1
ADAS mobile service, with the diagnostic equipment we distribute
to garages, we’re providing a service that’s really quite unique.”
Leo Jayawardena at Ansam Autocentre, an independent garage
in Croydon, recently contacted A1 about a diagnostic scan
carried out on a Peugeot 3008 after a problem was reported
with its lane assist system. The total interaction time with A1 for
the resulting job was just 30 minutes. The alternative would have
been for the vehicle to spend a week or more at a Peugeot main
dealer.
It began when, on receipt of Leo’s scan, A1’s technicians
recognised the B1004:96 code indicating a faulty camera. This
was confirmed by checking the OE technical information and as
nothing can be done to resolve an ‘internal fault’, the only option
was to replace the camera.
Once in receipt of the new camera, Leo contacted A1 again to
ask for help in providing the OE documentation to remove and fit
it. A1 was able to get the document over to him within 15 minutes.
Once fitted, Leo logged on with A1’s technician from 130 miles
away via his A1 Remote Diagnostics interface. The new camera
was remotely configured to the vehicle using the Peugeot OE
diagnostic system; something Ansam Autocentre didn’t have
access to.
The whole process was completed on-demand and in just 14
minutes, at which point one of A1’s ADAS-trained technicians
arrived in Croydon and calibrated the camera dynamically.
Iain continued: “I estimate the garage’s profit margin on the
job was increased by around 50 percent. And by dramatically
reducing the key-to-key time, the customer’s invoice was cleared
earlier too.
“It’s vital that workshops have access to a combination
of services such as ours. The car parc’s original tranche of
mainstream technically-equipped vehicles are now out of
warranty. It’ll only be a matter of time before their electronic
components fail.
“As they filter into the aftermarket, independents will need a
solution to keep the jobs in-house. By working with us, they’ll
be able to fix those vehicles in a time-efficient, profitable, and
hassle-free way.”
Thinktool EV ‘cell balancer’ gives
steady charge for off-vehicle testing
EV batteries need a steady charge during any off-car
diagnostic work, which is why Thinkcar UK has released the
Thinktool EVP802 cell balancer.
The Thinktool EVP802 cell balancer
is an EV pack modular equaliser
designed to provide stable highvoltage
and low-voltage power supplies
for off-vehicle battery testing.
“The EV car parc is diversifying as more
manufacturers offer a wider array of EVs,”
said Alex Gillbanks, Managing Director of
Impact Diagnostics, the specialist supplier
behind Thinkcar UK. “It is also maturing,
with older cars now more likely to enter
independent garages, which means
those garages will need new tools. With
outstanding specifications and an intuitive
interface, the EVP802 will change your
approach to EV diagnostics.”
The easily portable tool comes with
a 7-inch screen interface, and can be
connected via TCP/IP or USB-Device for
data transfer. In terms of results, charge/
discharge data is accessed through
histograms and data tables. When in
use, the EVP802 supports up to two
modules at once, meaning technicians
can work with a maximum of 12 batteries
simultaneously on each channel. Once
a battery is connected to the EVP802,
technicians can conduct a wide range of
electronic vehicle testing scenarios.
The EVP802 was a hit with visitors to
the Thinkcar UK stand at both Mechanex
Harrogate in May and the UK Garage and
Bodyshop Event in June. “Garage owners
and technicians with an eye on the EV
market were really taking an interest in the
EVP802,” said Alex.
This is just part of the overall EV
offering from the company. “Thinkcar
UK is bringing the tools of tomorrow that
enable EV testing and offline diagnostics,”
said Alex. “With the EVP802, get ready
to experience a new era of precision,
versatility, and convenience in the world
of off-vehicle testing.”
Shaftec’s New To Range expands
with new brake calipers
Birmingham-based automotive
remanufacturer Shaftec
Automotive has made further
additions to its New To Range
portfolio for the month of July,
featuring 16 new brake calipers.
Key applications for these brake
calipers include the BC11667/
BC21667 for the VW T-Cross (2020),
the BC11706/BC21706 for the Alfa Romeo
Stelvio (2016), and the BC11897/BC27897
for the Hyundai i10 111 (2019).
Shaftec’s latest additions follow the
month of June, when 41 driveshafts
and one CV joint became a part of the
company’s New To Range portfolio.
Shaftec Marketing Manager Adrian
Kitchen said: “With each passing month,
our New To Range product line expands
even further. We hope these new brake
calipers offer our customers the solutions
they are looking for, with more choices for
several different vehicles.
“It is worth reminding customers
that remanufactured parts often
perform as reliably and as strong as new
products. Shaftec always ensures that
its components can meet or surpass the
highest standards, helping you to save
money from having to spend on brand new
parts.”
Here are some signs that your brake
calipers might need changing:
l Reduced stopping power: If you notice
that your vehicle is taking longer to stop
than usual
l Pulling to one side: Your brake caliper
might be seized if the car pulls to one side
while braking
l A sticking caliper could cause the brake
pads to wear unevenly
l A stuck caliper could cause a grinding
noise when braking
l And last but certainly not least,
damaged caliper seals can cause the
vehicle to leak brake fluid which can be
dangerous
Shaftec always recommends that if drivers
notice any issues with their vehicle, they
seek the advice of an expert.
From day one the demand for servicing
was high; regular Dyson customers now
had an all-in-one solution for their vehicles
and were keen to keep their servicing with
Dyson, however it wasn’t long before their
reputation grew outside of the recovery
industry, as Depot Manager Mark Price
explains: “The majority of our work is
obviously from the recovery industry, over
65%, with the rest of the work coming from
local businesses who need commercial
A seven bay workshop means there is
huge capacity for work, whether that’s
A1 facilitates full garage
fit-out for Fastech
Fastech was looking for advice on layout, flooring
and equipment which included diagnostic tools, tyre
replacement and wheel alignment equipment, an air
compressor and two and four post lifts.
Creating a new workshop from the
ground up can be a daunting task.
Looking at a blank canvas can
leave even the most experienced garage
business owner wondering where to start;
especially when the space in question is
currently an office.
This was the case recently for Fastech,
a multi-site garage business which works
exclusively with car rental companies. The
business has depots sited around most of
the UK’s airports and was opening a new
arm in Bristol.
With a specific shopping list of garage
equipment and a tight deadline in
mind, Fastech turned to the workshop
equipment division of A1 ADAS Solutions
Group for help.
A1’s UK sales manager, Matt Hume,
explains how they devised a solution and
brought the whole thing together in just
three weeks.
Our first site visit was to look at an office
space which was due to be converted
into the workshop area; it took a little
imagination to begin with!
Fastech was looking for advice on layout,
flooring and equipment which included
diagnostic tools, tyre replacement and
wheel alignment equipment, an air
compressor and two and four post lifts.
Initially, we looked at the lifting
equipment and recommended an EAE
4-tonne 2-post lift alongside an EAE
5-tonne 4-post wheel alignment lift with
an EAE 3-tonne jacking beam.
The two post lift features three stage
front arms and two stage rear arms which
allow greater control to meet jacking
points on a wide range of vehicles up to
medium sized vans. The four post lift has
front turnplates and rear slip plates to aid
accurate wheel alignment results, along
with a 5.2m platform to accommodate
larger wheelbase vehicles with ease.
WORKSHOPEQUIPMENT
We then turned our attention to the
wheel alignment system, which Fastech
requested to be colour matched to
the lifts. This is something we’re asked
for quite frequently. The best one for
their needs was the Absolute Alignment
Bluetooth Lite Wheel Aligner. It’s a good
entry level, cost-effective 6-sensor CCD
4-wheel aligner which can be operated
from an android tablet. This gives the
technician greater mobility when working
underneath a ramp. For a machine with
a small footprint, it has a solid, well-built
base unit that holds the wheel clamps with
integrated chargers.
Next up, we considered the diagnostic
equipment. For this, we supplied the Autel
MS906s pro eu, a compact but powerful
diagnostic tool with a huge range of
service functions. This was complemented
with an Autel multi-security gateway
unlock which is the ideal solution for
workshops dealing with newer vehicles;
something particularly relevant for
Fastech’s customers.
For the air compressor, we chose the
Nuair B3800B-PRO/200 FM3. It has a
200-litre receiver tank with a 2.2kW (3Hp)
230v motor. As a popular workshop belt
drive compressor, it’s suitable for various
applications, is reliable, and consistently
performs well.
Lastly, we looked at the tyre equipment
requirement. Here, we wanted Fastech
to be able to replace low profile tyres
with ease, so installed an EAE EE-4880ID
tyre machine with ‘Assist Arm’. This
added assist arm gives greater leverage
and can work on low profiles without
risk of damage to the alloy wheel. It was
partnered with a manual input EAE EE-
3096V2 wheel balancer.
From Fastech’s order, through to the
co-ordination of multiple teams for the
full install, it took us just three weeks. This
also included full on-site training for the
depot’s new staff where needed.
It was indeed a fast job and it’s fantastic
to see the site up and running.
TRAINING
Launch of Skills England
No “quick fix” for garage staff shortages
says Easy2Recruit
The launch of Skills England by the
Prime Minister and Education
Secretary on Monday 22nd July,
has been hailed as a positive move by
automotive sector recruiter Easy2Recruit.
However, CEO and founder Ambi Singh is
reminding the garage sector that ramping
up apprenticeships will take time, and that
the sector will need to look more widely
to fill staffing shortages for some time to
come.
“With the automotive sector facing an
every-growing staff shortages alongside
many other industries, the Government’s
speed in launching Skills England so soon
should be lauded,” said Ambi Singh, “but
this is no quick fix; we cannot expect
this new organisation to be able to
immediately correct decades of drift on
the skills front.”
Following the announcement of the
Skills England Bill in the King’s Speech
last week, P.M Kier Starmer officially
kick-started the new body during an
address at the Farnborough International
Air Show today. Skills England will be set
up in phases over the next year. Its role
will be to pinpoint the training for which
Apprenticeship Levy funding will be
available. The new body will replace the
existing Institute for Apprenticeships and
Technical Education (IfATE). Education
Secretary Bridget Phillipson described the
current skills system as “fragmented and
broken.”
Once set up, Skills England will also
work alongside the Migration Advisory
Committee to identify where skills are
required to cut down on the need to bring
in overseas workers.
“There needs to be a range of
recruitment options available,” said
Ambi. “Garages are increasingly looking
overseas to fill technician roles for the
simple reason that there are not enough
mechanics available in the UK.”
Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI)
figures suggest the automotive sector
faces a 160,000 staff shortfall by
2030, with many of these being vehicle
technicians. Another IMI study pointed
towards the fact that the vacancy rate in
the motor trade is currently running at its
highest point in 21 years, with 5.1 jobs out
of every 100 vacant.
“It will take a long time to nurture a new
generation of technicians,” said Ambi,
“and until the apprenticeship system is
functioning properly again, garages will
need to source some staff from overseas.”
Following the General Election,
Easy2Recruit wrote to the new Home
Secretary Yvette Cooper, urging her to
ease the growing skills crisis in the garage
sector by adding mechanics and bodyshop
technicians to the Immigration Salary List,
the official list of skilled jobs for which
workers are deemed to be in short supply.
Easy2Recruit has been helping
automotive businesses access skilled
workers from the United Arab Emirates
(UAE) and India. “We deal with the
relocation from overseas all the way
to the garage in the UK,” said Ambi.
“The owner of the garage just needs to
undertake a video interview with the
candidate. We handle all the pastoral
care for the overseas worker, including
visa application, flight booking and
accommodation. Ultimately, we prepare
the route for the first day at work.”
staffing solutions, garages should visit:
A1 ADAS Solutions
Group Makes Senior
Appointment
ADAS and diagnostic specialist gears up
for further expansion.
In a strategic move as it gears up for
national expansion, A1 ADAS Solutions
Group has announced the appointment
of Kieran Eastwood as operations manager.
The group, which specialises in ADAS,
mobile and remote diagnostics, and garage
equipment, is growing at pace. The new
role will see Kieran managing the business’
processes whilst working closely with health,
safety and compliance director, Helen
Molloy, to uphold the group’s ISO 9001:2015
and ISO 14001:2015 accreditations.
Kieran, who has just relocated from
Australia, brings extensive JLR knowledge
with him as well as a wealth of operational
experience having recently managed
branches of Motorserve, a large chain of
vehicle repair centres.
Iain Molloy, A1’s managing director said:
“When we interviewed Kieran, I instantly
knew he was the perfect fit for us. His
mindset and approach to business fully
aligns with A1’s ethos and values.
“To facilitate the growth of the group,
we knew we needed someone in place to
not only uphold the existing processes that
work well, but to implement new ones as we
expand.
“We’re known for being sticklers for
delivering above and beyond what’s
expected, so it’s imperative that our
efficiency and quality of service doesn’t
change as we grow. Operational procedures
are at the heart of that.”
Kieran added: “The group’s plans for the
next 12 months are really exciting. There
couldn’t have been a better time to move
back to the UK and join A1.
“It’s also proved to be a great opportunity
to gain a deeper understanding of ADAS and
diagnostics. Having just completed my IMI
AOM230 accreditation, there’ll be plenty of
opportunity to get hands on in the business
too. This will be vital to truly understand
what new processes might be needed and
how they will impact the customer journey.”
The group, which has its headquarters
in Norwich, is also recruiting for an area
sales manager for the North of England
and technicians to join its mobile ADAS and
diagnostic van fleet throughout the UK.
AUTOGEM’S DELIGHT AT
‘DREAM DUO’ APPOINTMENT
Autogem has recruited the ‘dream duo’ of aftermarket
sales to add more weight to its ‘people, processes and
products’ concept.
Rikki Kane and Jenna McGilp have been appointed as Commercial
Sales Director and Sales Office Manager respectively, after amassing
more than 50 years’ combined experience in the automotive retail
industry.
The Scottish pair have built up an impressive reputation while
working together at Viking Wholesale Tyres and Autogem’s Managing
Director Prashant Chopra said they would help elevate the company
to even greater heights, following the high profile appointment of
Tony Neill as Strategic Advisor earlier in the year.
Prashant said: “The arrival of Rikki and Jenna will strengthen us in
so many ways and I can’t be any more excited! I’m proud to see so
much motivation and dedication from my existing team each day and
Rikki and Jenna are going to add to this.
“We’re constantly investing in our aftermarket products and the
processes associated with them. But we also need the very best
people to bring both to life and both Rikki and Jenna fit the bill.
They’re a dream duo and it we’re delighted to welcome them on
board. We’re confident about the future and we look forward to
making further appointments in due course.”
The pair have worked in tandem for a number of years and will
lean on a packed contacts book to raise Autogem’s presence with
key decision makers and potential new customers.
Rikki said: “Autogem are an award winning company that gets
everything right. They’re fantastic at product development, training
initiatives and marketing, so it’s up to us to amplify these and give the
business the success that it deserves.
“I felt a strong sense of affinity from the moment I spoke to
Prashant. I instantly felt a sense of togetherness and I’m very
confident of doing adding value with Jenna alongside me. I’ll be
looking to create new business leads and sales opportunities and I’ll
be putting a lot of pressure on myself to get the right results.”
Jenna will bring an abundance of proactivity to Rikki’s outputs,
with regular customer calls and visits already planned.
She said: “There is so much potential here and I’m really excited
to be on board. Autogem feels like a close-knit family and my first
impressions are that we can make a big difference to the business in
a number of ways.”
