Interview with
Ayaz Saboor
Founder and Mentor, The Commercial Law Pathway
You previously worked for a law firm based in
Manchester. In your experience, is the culture in
northern law firms any different from those in other
regions?
In my experience, the culture in northern law firms,
particularly in Manchester, often feels more collaborative
and community-oriented compared to some of the
larger, more competitive environments found in London
(however, I am speaking from a position of having
never worked in London). There is a strong sense of
camaraderie and support among colleagues, which
fosters a more inclusive and friendly atmosphere. The
emphasis on work-life balance also tends to be more
pronounced, which can be incredibly beneficial for mental
well-being and overall job satisfaction.
This doesn’t mean that northern firms lack ambition or
drive; rather, they pursue excellence while maintaining a
grounded and supportive work environment. This culture
can be very attractive for those who value balance in their
lives.
You’re now a mentor for aspiring lawyers. Have you
found that many are drawn towards jobs in London?
If so, how much of a concern should that be for law
firms with offices in the North of England?
It’s about changing the narrative and demonstrating that
a successful and fulfilling legal career doesn’t have to be
confined to London.
Law firms in the North of England can highlight the
unique benefits they offer, such as a lower cost of living,
a better work-life balance, and a supportive community
culture. By showcasing the high-quality work and
clients they attract, and the rich career development
opportunities available, northern firms can effectively
compete for top talent.
It’s undeniable that many aspiring lawyers are initially
drawn to the allure of London, seeing it as the epicentre
of opportunities and prestige, not just in the legal sector.
However, this trend should not necessarily be a cause for
concern for northern law firms. Instead, it presents an
opportunity.
With the same token and in the same breath, when
people want to live and work in London; some cannot be
convinced otherwise until they have experienced it for
themselves.
What differences have you seen implemented in the
workplace for women since you started your career?
As much as it might surprise aspiring and young
lawyers, there’s a whole world beyond the capital!
Law firms in the North of England have a unique
opportunity to shout about the equally high-quality of
work and diverse mix of clients they handle. Many young
lawyers are initially drawn to London for its perceived
prestige and opportunities, but there’s a whole legal
world beyond the capital.
I personally have worked in law firms in Bristol,
Cardiff and Manchester. Northern firms can highlight
the stimulating and complex cases they handle,
demonstrating that top-tier legal work is not solely
exclusive to London.
The main thing is to change that narrative. Northern
firms can emphasise the lifestyle benefits they offer.
A short commute, affordable living costs, and a better
work-life balance are significant attractions that
northern cities like Manchester, Leeds, and Liverpool
provide. These factors contribute to a more fulfilling
personal life, allowing young professionals to excel in
their careers without sacrificing their well-being.
In the mentoring work I do, I often guide aspiring
lawyers to consider what they truly want from their
career beyond the initial allure of London. Many find
that the lifestyle advantages up North—such as lower
living expenses, vibrant cultural scenes, and easier
access to nature—align more closely with their longterm
personal and professional goals. Admittedly, some
can’t be convinced otherwise, not that I set out to do
this, but I do challenge everyone on their reasons for
picking any firm.
By fostering open dialogue about these benefits and
highlighting the diverse career opportunities available,
northern law firms can effectively attract and retain top
talent who are seeking a balanced and rewarding legal
career outside London.
Proactive engagement with universities and law schools
is crucial. Northern firms should actively participate
in career fairs, workshops, and networking events at
universities to connect with aspiring lawyers early in
their academic journey.
Building relationships with students through internships,
mentoring programs, and educational partnerships not
only enhances visibility but also raises awareness from
early in their career and hopefully cultivates a pipeline
of talent that understands and values the unique
opportunities northern law firms offer.
