Threats follow tragic
deaths of village cygnets
And then there was one. The surviving
cygnet with parents at Wingerworth Lido
T
HE deaths of two cygnets at Wingerworth Lido,
allegedly found with fishing tackle down their throats,
has caused a rift between anglers and residents.
Accusations and threats have been made by both sides, with
nature lovers hoping that NE Derbyshire District Council, which
owns The Lido, will take action, perhaps even banning fishing.
The Lido waters are managed on the council’s behalf by Clay
Cross Angling Association, who also run fishing at the Wall
Pond, which is owned by Wingerworth Parish Council.
Previously, there has been criticism of the blue dye the angling
association use on their waters to control weeds.
Swans are popular residents of The Lido and the same pair
have been raising cygnets for many years. This year there were
seven cygnets but their number has gradually depleted over the
past few weeks until just three were left. Now there is just a
single survivor.
One post on the village Facebook said: “We've lost another one
of the cygnets this evening, that's two in less than a month to the
same fate. It's just so heartbreaking to have to swim out into the
4
pond, rescue a little cygnet and watch it die with loads of fishing
line down its neck... again.”
A spokesperson for the Wingerworth Wildlife Group said: “Our
group is looking to make rigorous, fast and effective changes to
the disastrous environmental situation that’s completely manmade,
and ensure that all users of this formerly amazing resource
can enjoy and thrive in what used to be a bio-diverse treasure. By
users, we mean wildlife and humans, not just a single minority
group of humans.”
Another resident commented: “That pond is full of discarded
tackle. I watched a guy strip all the line off his reel a few weeks
ago and throw it in the pond. The answer I got from him when I
protested about his actions was a threat of violence.”
A spokesperson for Clay Cross Angling Association, said: “The
club refuses to make any further statements except that we take
the issue very seriously, along with the threats of violence
towards the club and its anglers."
Despite repeated attempts, no-one at NE Derbyshire District
Council was available to comment about the situation at The
Lido.

Gardening boost for schoolchildren
R
ECEPTION Year pupils at
Wingerworth’s Deer Park School will
soon be learning gardening advice from
residents with considerably more
experience after the school won a
regional contest run by a garden centre.
Parent Andrea Paddison nominated the
Deer Friends group for the Dobbies
community garden competition, and they
beat hundreds of other entries for the prize
of £1,500 of garden tools and garden-related
items, possibly including a greenhouse.
Every month the school hosts Deer Friends
when a group of four and five-year-olds visit
the Parish Hall for fun, games and activities
with elderly residents.
As an extension of this event, the school
garden will be improved and redesigned by
the Dobbies team to make it a usable
community area as the youngsters learn
more about how vegetables are grown, from
seeds to the dinner table.
“It’s really good that they can understand
the cycle of life,” said Andrea.
She added that it was particularly important
that pupils can learn gardening tips from
older residents, given that changes in society
mean that many children live great distances
from their grandparents and often their own
gardens have been replaced by concrete
drives and patios.
Lower speed limit call for blackspot
T
HE toll of road accidents on the A61 through
Wingerworth is revealed by statistical evidence after
another collision injured a motor cyclist and closed the road
for several hours.
According to the www.crashmap.co.uk website, there have
been 44 injury accidents on the Wingerworth stretch since 2000,
including three fatalities (2013) involving two motor cycles outside
the Hunloke Arms. Seven other accidents were rated ‘serious’.
There have been 13 accidents at the junctions of Mill Lane and
Nottingham Drive and another eight between Mill Lane and the
Four Lane Ends roundabout, including two said to be ‘serious.’
Gary Green, who lives alongside the road, said: “With many
more vehicles using it and no major improvement to the road in
70 years, apart from more roundabouts and many more
developments resulting in much higher volumes of traffic,
highways, police and local councils should wake up to the fact
that unless something radical is done, many more people will be
killed or injured on their watch.”
Although there is no suggestion that speed was a factor in the
latest incident, Mr Green said: “I have been campaigning for
years to get something done about the speed vehicles travel.
They always spout that the statistics don't support the need and
If anyone thinks this is petty, I have numerous images of the
aftermath of such incidents on this road.
“All have happened within 200 metres of my home. Each injury
is a life changed, not a statistic!”
He added: “Speed has a lot to do with it. Yes, bad drivers cause
most, but bad drivers going slower cause fewer injuries. It's been
proven people are less likely to suffer serious injury or death
when involved in road accidents when vehicles are going
slower.”
Other residents agreed. One said: “I’ve also been campaigning
to get the speed limit lowered but for me it’s been the stretch
near the Belway estate. I have witnessed many near misses as
cars are exceeding the 50mph; I think it should be 30mph.
“There will be many more accidents unless the speed limit is
reduced.
Another added: “I’m a transport consultant and I totally agree
the basis for funding is very focussed upon how many people
have been injured. The issue is that perception of a problem
often means drivers adapt and slow down. I’m not saying this is
the case here, but it can be.
“Generally, to get the speed limit reduced there would need to
be evidence of a road safety issue. Failing that, near misses can
be used as a proxy but would require analysis of video footage
over a set period, called a conflict assessment.
The junctions of Nottingham Drive and Mill Lane
where 13 accidents have occurred
“When will Derbyshire County Council wake up to the fact that
everywhere else in the country local councils are lowering speed
limits to keep residents and road users safe. Traffic increases
year on year and it shouldn’t be that people have to lose their
lives to become a statistic for change.”
NE Derbyshire District Council is considering a plan to situate
traffic lights at the junction with Mill Lane, rather than a
roundabout for both Mill Lane and Nottingham Drive as was
originally proposed.
Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for highways
assets and transport, Coun Charlotte Cupit, said: “We are sorry to
hear about the collision and hope those involved are recovering.
As with any incident on our roads, we will liaise with local police
and review whether road safety measures are needed.
“While we’re not proposing any changes to the speed limits
along this stretch of the A61 at the current time, and following the
consultation responses last year, we will continue to review these
locations given the new houses being built.”
A police spokesperson said: “We were called to a collision
between a car - a black BMW i5 M60 - and a motorbike - a blue
BMW K1200GT - just after 8am on Tuesday, 2nd July. The
motorcyclist was taken to hospital for treatment, having suffered
injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.
“Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information or dashcam
footage should contact us by phone on 101 or on our Derbyshire
Constabulary Facebook page, quoting reference 212 of 2nd July.
Ancient stone pillar
is back on its feet
A
HISTORIC Wingerworth stone pillar dating back 250
years has been restored to its upright position after
being mysteriously knocked over.
Situated just off Swathwick Lane at Harpur Hill, at the start of
Footpath 11 and the entrance to a field, it is one of two pillars
which may have been part of a route from Chatsworth to
Hardwick Hall, and was listed as being of special historic
interest.
A spokesperson for NE Derbyshire District Council said: “We
had noted that the pillar had been rebuilt following
engagement with the owner.”
The Avenue
W
HEN Wingerworth’s Avenue Coking Plant finally closed
in 1992, it left behind a wasteland of soil poisoned with
cyanide and arsenic, leaky tanks and pipelines, waste tips, and
black lagoons filled with tar.
The desolate 98-hectare site was labelled the most toxic land in
Europe and its recovery saw remediation works which were
unprecedented in size and complexity. More than two million cubic
metres of soil were processed through a £6.5m treatment plant,
operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, heating the soil to
up to 1,000°C, to remove contaminants. The works took almost ten
years to complete.
Nowadays, The Avenue is home to hundreds of families who
share their green and pleasant site with a variety of birds and
animals.
Sparkling record-breakers!
A
RECORD-breaking number
of walkers lit up the streets
of north Derbyshire for Ashgate
Hospice’s annual Sparkle Night
Walk event.
More than 3,400 supporters
stepped out for the return of the
charity’s biggest fundraiser,
sponsored by NOCN Group.
Walkers have already helped
raise £220,000 to help fund end
of life care in north Derbyshire,
and the charity hopes to see the
figure rise even more by the
sponsorship deadline at the end of
July.
The 10km walk began and
finished at Chesterfield FC, with
people setting off at 10pm and live
entertainment kicking off the party
at 7pm.
This year, the event smashed the
previous record of 3,114
participants in 2023 as more than
3,400 supporters turned out on
Saturday evening.
The 10km route took walkers
from the stadium down the A61
bypass, which was closed to
traffic, past the Crooked Spire and
through the streets of Chesterfield before returning to the
football ground.
Jack Wood, director of income generation at Ashgate Hospice,
said: “Once again everyone at the hospice has been absolutely
blown away by the amount of people who turned out for our
Sparkle Night Walk.
“The event was our most popular ever and we’re so grateful to
all the walkers who came out to support the hospice.
“Our incredible staff and volunteers have been working so hard
for months to put on an amazing event for the people of north
Derbyshire, I’m so glad it was such a success.
“The amount of money we’re expected to receive in donations
will go such a long way towards being there for the patients and
families who need us most.”
“We hope to see everyone back again next year donning their
sparkles, pink tutus and bunny ears.”
Super early bird registration for next year’s event has opened
and more than 400 people have already signed up. Entry will be
available at a reduced rate of £8 until 11th August, with the walk
set to take place on 28th June 2025.
Looking to bring
the changes our
community needs
NE Derbyshire residents voted for a new
representative in Westminster in July’s General
Election. Louise Jones MP presents her first
column for Wings magazine readers
H
ELLO, I’m Louise Jones, your new Member of
Parliament.
Since being elected on 4th July, I’ve said that phrase hundreds
of times as I’ve been out and about introducing myself to my new
constituents across the Wings magazine area and elsewhere in
NE Derbyshire, as well as settling into Parliament.
It feels exactly like my first day at a new school, or my first day
in the British Army, and I’m very excited!
I’m so proud to be
your new MP, and I
want to thank
everyone who voted
for me, and the
fantastic people of
Wingerworth,
Ashover, Tupton and
other local villages for
putting their faith in
me to represent them.
I also want to thank
my predecessor as
MP, Lee Rowley, who
has worked very hard
for this area over the
past few years. While
we may have our
disagreements, we
do, however, strongly
agree that our patch
of Derbyshire is the
best in the country
and you - our
constituents - deserve
a hard-working MP to
represent you locally
and in Westminster.
As your new MP, I
want to bring the
Louise Jones MP pictured on her
arrival at Westminster
change our community so badly needs. And, regardless of
whether you voted for me or not, I’m here to support and
represent you.
Right now, I’m finding my way around the House of Commons,
meeting new colleagues, and setting up my team. However, front
of mind will always be my work for you, my constituents. So, if
you have any questions for me, or want to chat about an issue
you’re facing, please get in touch with me and my team at
louise.jones.mp@parliament.uk - we’re here to serve you.
Throughout this General Election campaign, I campaigned hard
on the importance of improving our public transport, protecting
and enhancing our green spaces, and ensuring we have the
health and education services we need.
I’m committed to deliver on these pledges, and so much more,
as part of the new Labour Government. I look forward to
updating you very soon with our progress!
Linda’s Race For Life mission
ORE than ten million people have taken part in
M Race for Life events, running - or walking -
either 3k, 5k or 10k since 1994, fundraising for Cancer
Research UK. Together, they have raised in excess of
£970 million towards life-changing cancer research.
Cancer Research has developed radiotherapy which
helps more than 130,000 people with cancer in the UK
every year.
One such fund-raiser is Linda Neary, of Nethermoor Road,
Wingerworth, and this is her story:
“My first Race was in 2005 in Derby as Chesterfield did
not have an event at that time. I went along with a friend
and her group of friends and family. I was amazed how
many women and girls had turned out to compete – it was
a very moving experience. Men were not allowed to enter
at this time.
“The following year when I ran – again at Derby – my
mum had just been diagnosed with breast cancer, which
made it a more personal and poignant experience.
Months later, I was diagnosed with bowel cancer myself
aged 52 and after an operation and treatment I was
determined to continue fundraising and entered again the
following year at Chesterfield, where I continued to
compete for a number of years.
“The organisers had opened the event to allow men to
compete, which allowed families an opportunity to run together and extend fundraising.
“I noticed the outfits get better annually, with tutus, feather boas and face-painting adding to
the pink theme. It is a serious event with lots of fun included.
“Each Race is very well organised, with warm-up sessions prior to the start. Volunteer
Marshals line the route and cheer participants on and there are other groups like choirs who
serenade the runners. It is a heart-warming environment.
“My target was to complete 20 races by the age of 70. On a couple of occasions I was unable
to compete at Chesterfield and instead ran at the Meadowhall events.
“The Covid outbreak meant that the race was cancelled for a year, so to achieve my target of
a 2024 conclusion, I decided to run in two races this year, including one in June at Bristol,
where my eldest daughter lives. My grandsons, Hollis and Zac, ran it with me, making it an
extremely memorable one.
“I haven’t kept a total of the amount raised over this time, but it is considerable and I want to
thank everyone who has sponsored me over the years and my husband, Jim, for his
exceptional support.
“My final race was on Sunday, July 21st, Chesterfield. I feel very proud to have supported such
a worthwhile cause.”
Counting cost
of flooded
footpath
RAINAGE work to prevent
D
the footpath flooding next
to Wingerworth Bowls Green
cost £101,744, the monthly
parish council was told.
The work included the removal
of 30ft of tree root from the
drainage grid/drain from the Island
Pond (which when removed
dropped the pond level by 8in),
repair of broken foul sewerage
from the pavilion which now
means the toilets are back in use,
and a new inspection chamber at
the rear of the pavilion where
several drainage runs meet from
the tennis courts, pavilion and
Island Pond.
Work on the footpath adjacent to
the football pitches in the
Allendale Road park is expected
to take place during the summer
holidays.
Meanwhile, the council is to
make an application for a public
right of way to be created at
Sutcliffe Wood, off Nethermoor
Road, and will ask for personal
and historical details from
residents to support the
application to add it to the
definitive map.
It is understood the woods,
which have been walked by
generations of residents, are now
up for sale and access could be
difficult unless a public right of
way is created.

Baby great
spotted
woodpecker
Woodpeckers
drawn to the
wildlife garden
Guess who has been fighting over Prof Ian
Rotherham’s home-made suet puddings?
O
VER the last year or so, our great spotted
woodpeckers have been getting progressively
bolder.
A few years back, they would sneak into the top of the
garden and feed on hanging nuts or fat-balls, but mainly
when they thought you weren’t looking! Gradually they have
crept to the middle of the garden and onto the feeders
there, but they were increasingly nervous the closer they
came to the house.
Within the last two years, the birds have become more and
more bold and will now feed on fat-balls and nuts right down
by the house. This seems to be a gradual emboldening of
the birds as they become accustomed to human proximity
and are less easily spooked.
Winner
The final step, I think, has been putting out ‘suet
dumplings’ which are softer to eat and presumably have a
higher calorific value. Certainly, the suet dumplings seem
to be irresistible to the woodpeckers but also to blue tits,
great tits, robins, and blackbirds too. Along with this, the
use of a feeder with suet bars has also proved to be a
winner.
However, there is a downside to the dumplings and
bars, as my local badgers also find them irresistible too,
and I presume they have a strong smell that the badgers
can detect. This has caused a bit of a problem as for a
couple of nights the badgers rampaged among the
feeders, even pulling them down to the ground and
bending metal holders almost in two. They even stole and
made off with feeders when they couldn’t immediately
extract the tasty suet!
These stolen feeders sometimes turn up in my neighbours’
gardens where the badgers have taken them. My response
has been to change the feeding place for the badgers to the
top of the garden and to badger-proof the areas nearer the
house. I will see how that works out.
Visitors
The woodpeckers I have visiting are all great spotted
woodpeckers, with a larger male sporting red on the back of
the neck, and the somewhat smaller female, just black and
white except for the red underbelly – which all the great
spotted woodpeckers have.
However, it is the youngsters that cause the most
confusion as they are rather smaller and have a distinctive
red cap on top of the head. I do get messages from readers
saying they have had ‘lesser spotted woodpeckers’ in their
gardens but these are almost always misidentifications and
are baby great spotted. The lesser spotted woodpecker is
rare, nationally threatened, and (significantly) about sparrowsized,
so much smaller that the great spotted woodpeckers.
We do have an occasional pair of lesser spotted
woodpeckers nesting in a park near my home, and the best
time to look and listen for them is late February and into
March, when they are setting up breeding territories.

Wings
A male great
spotted
woodpecker
Our other woodpecker is unmistakable and that is the green
woodpecker or yaffle – after its far-carrying, laughing call. I have
occasionally seen them in the garden and I did hear one in the
distance recently.
Green woodpeckers feed on ants and like big trees but in open,
sunny, unimproved grasslands.
Anyway, do watch out for your local woodpeckers this
summer!
“What a wonderful day. Thank you so so much for all your
hard work in organising this event. My first year attending as
a visitor rather than a volunteer due to other commitments
and what a brilliant day we had. I just hope that out of the
hundreds of people who came, some of them come forward
to help out next year to make sure it can continue. Please,
people of Wingerworth, step up to ensure we don't lose
such a wonderful community event. – A previous committee
member of several years.
“It was brilliant; thank you to everyone who made it
happen. - Wingerworth Ladies Club.
“Myself and Tom enjoyed a lovely day at Wingerworth
Community Festival. I was honoured to be asked to judge
the dog show with Gabbie from Guide Dogs. We provided
the prizes, and every dog who entered went home with a
little bag of peanut butter paws.” - Jill, Hasland Pet Supplies.
“A massive thank you to all of the organisers of the Fun
Day. It was superb and enjoyed by all. The hard work that
goes into its organisation really shows.” - Member of the
INGERWORTH Bowling Club has benefited from a
£250 Community Action Grant to help its 40th
anniversary celebrations bloom.
The club successfully applied for the grant from NE Derbyshire
District Council to support a 40th anniversary planting project,
which included plants and hanging baskets to display and
enhance the facilities within the local area.
Coun Jayne Barry, Cabinet member for growth, presented the
cheque to John Wallace, club president, during the annual
President’s Day competition.
Coun Barry said: “The club brings the community together in a
friendly and sociable setting where local people can relax and
enjoy themselves, and it’s a club that provides exercise for all
ages.
“The project also supports some priorities in the Council Plan
by providing opportunities for residents to participate in physical
and social activity, improving health and improving where people
live.”
A grateful John Wallace said: “May I thank NE Derbyshire
District Council for their very generous donation. I would also like
to thank them for their continuous help and assistance given to
the bowling club.”
The club aims to be fully inclusive. This has included an annual
schools coaching programme for primary pupils, working with the
MacIntyre charity to invite people with learning difficulties to the
green and a coaching session for the local Scout group, which
will hopefully continue this year.
The club also has two specially adapted wheelchairs for use on
the green, allowing even more people to participate in the sport.
The event was open to members, friends and family, attended
by several parish councillors. About 40 people took part in
competitions, including five non-members.
INGERWORTH parish councillors considered plans to
upgrade the telecommunications mast at Derby Road
Streetworks, New Tupton, from Sinclair Dalby Ltd.
On the motion of Coun Shipman, seconded by Coun Hancock,
it was moved that the Parish Council support the proposals by
Sinclair Dalby Ltd and welcome any move to improve mobile
reception and communications for local communities.
The motion was carried, with five votes in favour, none against
and seven abstentions.
Chair, Coun Anne Knyhynyckyj, said: “I was one of the members
who abstained as there was just not enough information for me
or the others to agree this motion.”
Quarry homes plan
A
N application to build 12 homes to be built at Bolehill
Quarry has been supported by Wingerworth Parish
Council.
The quarry ceased operating many years ago and the council
backed the scheme for the following reasons: The site is derelict
and an eyesore, regeneration of the quarry will improve the
appearance and character of the area, the area is subject to a lot
of anti-social behaviour and residential development of the site
should remove this problem.
Development would also prevent any further tipping on the site
and stop quarrying in the future.
Ashgate Croft boost
A
LOCAL special education school is among six
Derbyshire schools to receive a share of almost £5
million.
Funding given to Ashgate Croft School in Chesterfield will
provide a four-classroom modular building to create additional
space. The move is part of Derbyshire County Council’s
investment to provide additional places for children and young
people with special and complex needs across Derbyshire.
It follows the council’s announcement of a £9.7 million budget
in May – a total now increased to £11 million – to increase the
number of school places for children with special needs by
around 500 as part of a five-year plan to support vulnerable
learners.
History and culture
connects communities
A
NEW programme of events and exhibitions will celebrate
history and culture in Chesterfield.
Chesterfield Borough Council has received funding from Arts
Council England to host a variety of museum exhibitions being
held at venues across the borough and a series of plays at the
Winding Wheel. The programme will run until August, 2025.
Coun Kate Sarvent, the council’s cabinet member for town
centres and visitor economy, said: “Whilst Chesterfield Museum
and the Pomegranate Theatre are closed for refurbishment, this is
a fantastic opportunity to ensure that our residents can still
connect with our history and culture.
“There is lots planned as part of this programme, but all
exhibitions are family friendly with interactive activities to try.
We’ve also put together a great schedule of plays with some
classics as well as a selection of contemporary tales. We want lots
of people to come along and support these events.”
Peter Knott, Midlands Area Director at Arts Council England, said:
“We’re delighted to award Chesterfield Borough Council £98,750
to provide a programme of creative and cultural activities for the
community to enjoy while the town’s museum and Pomegranate
Theatre are closed for renovation.
“This National Lottery funding will support exhibitions, theatre,
activities and events at venues across the borough, ensuring local
people can continue to be inspired by museum collections, delve
into local history and take part in enriching creative and cultural
activities on their doorstep.”
The programme will kick off in September with the Chesterfield
Menagerie exhibition in the Assembly Rooms. Visitors will be able
to see some of the many animal-themed works within the museum
collection and
take part in
great familyfriendly
activities.
In October,
the museum
team will set
up an
Victorians exhibition for 2024 in Old Whittington.
In 2025, exhibitions will include the Tudors, Vikings, Medieval
and ‘Extraordinary Women’ who put our town on the map.
At the Winding Wheel Theatre, Rumpus Theatre Company will
bring the classic George Bernard Shaw comedy, Arms and the
Man, to audiences in October.
Then the Red Ladder Theatre Company will present ‘We’re Not
Going Back’, a funny yet moving musical tale of three sisters set in
the 1984/85 miners’ strike.
Chesterfield Museum and the Pomegranate Theatre is being
transformed as part of a multi-million pound renovation project to
create a modern visitor experience in the heart of the town centre.
The refurbished hall will bring together an extended Theatre, a
reconfigured and modern museum, alongside new gallery space, a
café bar, education and community facilities.
All the museum exhibitions happening around the borough over
the next year will be listed on: chesterfield.gov.uk/museum
The sky’s the limit
for roofer Gabriella
I
T is unusual to find women choosing roofing as a
career – in fact fewer than 0.5 per cent of roofers are
female.
But Dalton Roofing’s latest apprentice, Gabriella, aged 18, is
loving her new role after diverting from plans to work in art and
design.
Business owner Phil Dalton offered her an apprenticeship
after she helped out with some yard work at the company.
With a good head for heights, Gabriella decided to give it a
go and her appointment has proved a great success for
everyone.
Phil said: “As an industry we are very
keen to recruit more women roofers.
“Gabriella has really taken to the work
and her approach is so enthusiastic.”
Dalton Roofing’s Office Manager,
Rachel Griffiths, added: “We are ecstatic
to have a female roofer on our team,
pushing the next generation of women
and young people forward.”
Gabriella, from Chesterfield, said she
appreciates the security of a five-days-aweek
job as she could only find part-time work elsewhere. She is
delighted to have joined a highly-regarded local family-run
business and is enjoying the work.
She said: “I enjoy working high up with such great views. I think
more girls should get into roofing.”
Gabriella is preparing to begin a Master Roofer course in
Manchester before she embarks on obtaining her professional
qualifications through Leeds College of Building where she will
be the first woman to do the course.
Gabriella’s appointment takes the number of apprentices at
Dalton Roofing to seven, reflecting its commitment to training the
expert roofers of the future.
Evening showers forecast
The night sky brings another attraction this
month. Astronomer Phil Unsworth explains
where to locate the Perseid meteor shower
E
VERY August brings another meteor shower to our
skies, and this one is a firm favourite amongst
astronomers.
The Perseid shower tends to top lists of the 'best showers of the
year'. The shower is long-lasting, the meteors are fast, leaving
bright trails, and the warm Summer evenings make for pleasant
and social viewing conditions from the ground.
Technically, the shower began in late-July, with August arriving,
it will really start to become prolific. The shower itself has its peak
(when the rate of meteors is highest) on the 12th and 13th of the
month, but there are still good reasons to keep an eye out
throughout August until the shower's end around the 24th.
Our first point of consideration this month is the Moon. The new
moon during the shower is on August 4th, waxing to a full moon
on the 19th. This leaves us with a somewhat-bright quarter-moon
during our shower's peak, which may drown out some of the
fainter streaks in the sky. We can mitigate this by doing our
viewing in the early part of the month when the moonlight is less.
Let's also consider what time we could be doing our viewing.
Our most socially friendly hours to see the shower will tend to be
from around 10pm onwards, doing our viewing last thing in the
evening. This is absolutely fine, and you should see at least some
meteors, but it's during the later hours of the night where things
can begin to get more exciting.
If that too-bright moonlight is drowning out your viewing
opportunities in the late-evening, wait until it sets and have another
look in the pre-dawn, moon-free darkness.
Also, due to the shower's location, and some complicated
geometry regarding Earth's direction of spin, more meteors will
actually be scooped up and captured by Earth's gravity in the last
hours of darkness before the dawn, resulting in more bright streaks
across the sky at this time.
As an analogy, imagine the amount of raindrops blown onto your
face as you walk with a tailwind, compared to the amount when
you walk into a headwind. On the peak nights this can translate to
around 60 meteors per hour in the late evening, compared to
about 90 per hour in the pre-dawn.
To find the radiant (origin point) of the shower, we'll have to do a
little bit of triangulation, as unlike our December showers there is
no easy landmark in the sky nearby. The radiant of the Perseids is
actually very close to the border of three separate constellations:
Perseus (The Greek Hero, after which the shower is named),
Camelopardalis (The Giraffe), and Cassiopeia (The Queen).
Have a look at the included star chart, and we'll use Cassiopeia
as our guideline, as she is the most obvious and well-known
constellation of the three. Polaris is also included on the chart as
an extra aid.
Using our well-tested method of tracking from The Plough to find
Polaris, we will continue our line through Polaris and out the other
side to find a prominent 'W' formed from five stars. This big-W is
Cassiopeia, and she is a polar constellation, meaning she stays
high enough in the sky to never set.
Once located, orientate yourself as best you can so that the
Cassiopeia 'W' is the right way up. Take an imaginary line to the
left through the upper three stars (shown in blue), and another
through the lower two stars (pink). The 'W' shape is a little
lopsided, so two such lines won't quite run parallel, instead
converging together somewhere to the left of Cassiopeia. This is
roughly where our Perseid meteors will radiate from. As a
confirmation, we can use Perseus himself, located to the lower-left
of Cassiopeia.
Perseus is one of those constellations that takes a little bit of
squinting and imagination to work out what star corresponds to
what feature, and is a topic for another month, but he does include
two conspicuously bright stars, stacked one above the other.
Take a new line vertically upwards through both stars (shown in
green), and our blue-pink-green intersection is where we should
be looking. As a rough guideline, this point in the sky will be dueeast
at Midnight in early-August, 11pm in the mid-month, and 10pm
in the late-month. It will then rotate into the south-east and south
as the night continues.
As it's currently the school summer holidays, perhaps the more
scientific-minded kids (and adults!) might like to participate in a
little home-grown experiment. Have a look at the table below, to
be filled in on five separate nights throughout August. It does
involve a little bit of late-nights and early-mornings, but always
worth it for some cool results! Choose the same length of time to
observe for each session. I recommend five minutes to let your
eyes adjust to the darkness, then viewing and counting for at least
20 minutes. Send your results to me at spire.astronomy@gmail.com
and I'll look forward to reading them in September.
EW Police and Crime Commissioner Nicolle Ndiweni
has launched a major survey giving residents an
unprecedented role in the design of plans to build a safer
and more inclusive Derbyshire.
Joined by the first East Midlands Mayor Claire Ward, the PCC
said her work would be ‘driven by the people for the people'
and would empower residents to drive future change in the way
they wanted.
The PCC was in Chesterfield town centre to launch her first
public consultation since being elected in May. She says it was
important to ask residents about the crime and anti-social
behaviour issues of most concern to them to identify areas where
additional focus is required to keep people safe and feeling safe.
These priorities will form the foundations of her forthcoming
Police and Crime Plan, determining where and how she will
invest public funding.
Nicolle is determined to secure the most responses ever to a
PCC survey conducted in Derbyshire. She has announced plans
to travel the length and the breadth of the county to meet the
people she has been elected to represent and understand the
issues that require improvement to help them feel safer.
Nicolle said: "We are entering a period of great change with a
real opportunity to do things differently. I want local people to be
at the centre of that change - to be in the driving seat - and
together, we will reclaim our streets, build public trust and work
more effectively to protect our communities and victims of crime.
"This survey will give residents of Derbyshire the platform and
the power to outline exactly what is needed to make them feel
safer. It will spell out clearly where our time, funding and focus
should lie to build a justice system where criminals are not
allowed to act with impunity nor where anti-social behaviour is
Police and Crime Commissioner Nicolle Ndiweni on a
walkabout in Chesterfield town centre
allowed to flourish unchallenged. If we can prevent crime, so
many other pressures and problems are reduced.
"I am grateful for Claire's support for my consultation. I vowed in
my manifesto to take a strong partnership approach to tackling
crime, and I believe working together is fundamental for building
a protected and prosperous county.
“We deserve safety and the right to live peacefully - for
ourselves and for our families."
Mayor Claire Ward said: "Only by working together will we keep
the people of Derbyshire safe. That's why it was a privilege to be
alongside Nicolle as she launched her public consultation. It's
The survey and the results will help the PCC to identify priority
areas and propose action to address them in her Police and
Crime Plan. To complete the survey visit: qrco.de/PoliceAndCrime
Wingerworth Parish Council
Big success of new Village Quiz
TEAMING up with The Barley Mow pub,
Wingerworth Parish Council held its first
Charity Quiz on Thursday, 4th July.
With 17 teams in play, a raffle, good food and
plenty of fun, the night raised a fantastic £412. The
money will be split between the Parish Council’s
two chosen charities, Wingerworth Junior Sports
Association and Tupton Food Bank.
Anya Flude, of The Barley Mow, said: “It was
lovely to work with the Parish Council to help
support local good causes and to see so many
community groups joining in the fun as well. We
hope to make this a yearly event, too”.
The winning quiz team was ‘Two Janes' (plus two
others). The team was presented with a small quiz
cup on the night to keep. A winners' shield will be
engraved and displayed at The Barley Mow.
All funds donated through the raffle and entry
fees has gone directly to the two charities. The
cost of providing the food was generously covered
by The Barley Mow.
Some works done, more to do...
Deer Park, Wingerworth, where works
to drains have been completed
WE are pleased to report
that the repairs to the
Deer Park drainage are
now complete.
The Pavilion is back in use
and the puddles have gone!
In more good news, works to
make the trees safer in all our
parks has also come to an
end.
We are aware that both
projects have caused
inconvenience at times for our
residents, but the Parish
Council is grateful for your
patience and understanding.
A Wingerworth footpath
With works on the drains and
awaiting repairs
trees now ticked off, the
Parish Council’s ‘to do’ list, the
focus now moves on to restoring our footpaths.
Starting on 19th August, the Deer Park footpath
that runs from the back of the Medical Centre
to Deer Park School will be closed for repairs.
Our contractor will be raising and resurfacing
the path to remove the bumps and cracks
caused by tree roots and hopefully keeping it
free from flooding.
The works are expected to take no more than
two weeks and the path should be open again
for the start of the school term.
Upcoming events
Village Show – Saturday, 7th September,
between 2pm and 4.30pm.
Craft Fair – Saturday, 9th November,
details to be confirmed.
