GIRLS
JUST WANT TO HAVE
FUN
As of now younger generations, most know this month’s cover because of her commercials
for psoriasis. What they don’t know is it one point in time she was one of the biggest artist in the world
of entertainment.
Whether it was touring with her band, or playing parts in
movies, and even becoming an icon in the Wrestling
business there’s no doubt she earned her way to the top.
She’s back at it again with a new tour proving that girls
still want to have fun.
Cyndi Lauper, born Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper on
June 22, 1953, in Queens, New York, had a humble
beginning. Growing up in a working-class family, Lauper
faced many challenges but always had a passion for
music. She began singing in local bars and clubs, honing
her craft and developing her unique style.
In 1983, Lauper released her debut album, She's So Unusual,
which catapulted her to stardom. The album featured hits like
"Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "Time After Time,"
showcasing Lauper's powerful voice and quirky persona. Her
colorful fashion sense and rebellious attitude made her a pop
icon of the 1980s.
Despite facing setbacks and criticism, Lauper continued to
push boundaries and create music that resonated with
audiences around the world. Her career has spanned over
four decades, earning her numerous awards and accolades,
including Grammy Awards and a Tony Award for her work on Broadway.
In 2024, Lauper announced a national tour, marking her return to the stage after a hiatus. Fans are
eagerly anticipating the opportunity to see the legendary singer perform live once again. Lauper's
enduring talent and passion for music continue to inspire generations of artists and fans alike.
On Wednesday 12/6/02, my wife, Cindy and our two kids, Bobby & Kimmie, visited Kennedy Space Center (KSC) for the first time. Within a mile of KSC,
traveling east on NASA Parkway West, we could see & were awestruck by what we would learn was the Rocket Garden. After a quick snack, we boarded the
bus for the $25 extra per person “Cape Canaveral: Then and Now” Tour at 8:30. One of the first stops on the tour was Cape Canaveral Launch Complex (LC) 5,
the historic launchpad facility from which Alan Shepard became the first American in space. We were allowed in the LC-5 (&6, a shared) Blockhouse, which
was left exactly as it was on 5/5/61 - the launch date of Shepard's Mercury-Redstone 3, nicknamed Freedom 7 for the seven original Mercury astronauts -
including the ashtrays full of cigarette butts. Then we went onto the Launchpad itself, just 150 feet SSE of the Blockhouse, the gantry, 250 feet. LC-5 was only
used one more time, 77 days later on 7/21/61 with Gus Grissom on Liberty Bell 7. The “Then and Now” Tour lasted four hours, visiting many historic
launchpads, including LC-26, just over ¼ mile northeast of the LC-5&6 Blockhouse, the site of the Cape Canaveral Space Force Museum, then called Cape
Canaveral Air Force Museum, in the converted LC-26A&B Blockhouse. In fact, the Museum Grounds are enclosed in Museum Circle; the road also includes LC-
5&6. The excellent Museum Tour Guide, after his presentation, fielded questions, many from my son Bobby, for 10 minutes. The other key stop on the Tour,
five miles north, LC-34, the site of the tragic death of the astronauts of Apollo 1 on 1/27/67, during a launch rehearsal test, the result of a fire in the
Command Module. Less than half of the folks on the bus even bothered to disembark to the hallowed ground; just as neglected, the launchpad itself; in dire
need of sandblasting; weeds growing so thickly between every concrete block, it'd take a half gallon of Roundup for the first cut alone; only the Dedication
Plaque to Astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White & Roger Chaffee remained in good shape. After returning, we went to lunch then took the KSC Bus Tour of: the
Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB); LC-39A&B; and the Apollo/Saturn V Center, which has a full Saturn V Rocket replica on its side, an exact replica of LC-39A&B
Blockhouse, where they recreate the Apollo 11 launch, and a robotic recreation of Neil Armstrong's landing & “giant leap”. The next morning, we took
another $25 extra per person tour, “KSC Up-Close”. a deeper-dive, three hour version of the KSC Bus Tour, excluding the stop at Apollo/Saturn V Center. The
bus got us closer to the VAB, its enormous doors open, revealing Shuttle Columbia in preparation for what would be its final launch on 1/16/03 from LC-39A,.
We all know what happened on 2/1/03 during her re-entry over Texas. Later that day, we watched a shortened version of “Apollo 13” starring Tom Hanks on
KSC's IMAX, some of which was filmed at KSC. The two hour movie resulted in us missing some exhibits, so we upgraded out tickets to Annual Passes,
returned the next day, and were lucky enough to catch Endeavor landing in KSC @ 2:38. Given the 100% clear, blue skies we had on 12/7, the Endeavor
landing was far superior to any launch I've ever seen. That weekend in KSC was so mind-blowing, it's as if NASA actually decided to...
...Fly Me to the Moon. So much of the film takes place on KSC that it was like a trip back to 12/5-7/02 for us. It stars Scarlett Johansson as Kelly Jones, a
Madison Ave. marketing specialist, Channing Tatum as NASA Launch Director Cole Davis, and Woody Harrelson as Moe Berkus, a high-level intelligence
officer who reports directly to President's Nixon's office. It's set from late 1968 through Neil Armstrong & crews' July 20, 1969 Moon landing. Moe is charged
with getting Kelly & her assistant Ruby Martin (Anna Garcia) down to Cape Canaveral to get some spark back in the Apollo Program. Much of America has lost
its support of the Moon Mission during a year of live Vietnam War TV coverage, the MLK & RFK assassinations, the vitriolic election, etc. Congress' financial
support has also waned. Putting a spark in the Program, re-branding Apollo 11 as a major priority, will get some Senators on board again and do wonders for
President Nixon's image. Director Davis, however, does not want the Mission to be compromised by a cheesy advertising campaign. Along the way, the
movie throws Dark Side of the Moon levels of shade on the conspiracy theory that we never really landed on the Moon; or, maybe we did but, in either
event, the footage we saw was filmed by Stanley Kubrick. This is a hilarious, sort of rom-com (but I hate to think of it as such, it's a very smart movie). Many of
the events of our first three days in KSC – special tours, VAB, Apollo 11 launch & Eagle landing, LC-34 before it's degradation – are in the film. As of this
writing, it's in its second week of release, and doing well at the box office. Great Movie! 4 Stars!
FOCUS
ON LOCALS
If you are from the Central Florida area, especially near the
east coast chances are you that you know this month’s featured
artist and her family as well. This year marks the 40th
anniversary for the Cuchetti school of music which is a staple
mark in New Smyrna Beach. It has taught thousands of students
the wonderful art of playing an instrument and singing. Here’s a
little history of just one of the many talented children from the
Cuchetti family.
Gina Cuchetti was born the youngest of 10 children into the
musical Conti family group and the first five years of her life
was spent "on the road" - on stage or traveling in the converted
Greyhound Bus which was home sweet home!
Gina's life has been encompassed by music from the time she
was born, coming into the world screaming on top of her lungs
with a loud and clear voice. Her music has developed through
elementary school, church cantering, talent shows, singing in
the school chorus and choir, playing sax in the school band, all of
which continued through high school and college.
In 1998, Gina won a World Tour Scholarship and entered the
prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston and received a
Bachelors Degree in Vocal Performance. During her four years
at Berklee, Gina appeared at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New
York and was honored at her 2002 graduation ceremony for
having performed in Berklee's "Singers Showcase" for all four
years, breaking any existing record. Gina also taught at Berklee
for the summer program.
Gina was a final 20 choice in the blind auditions in front of the
celebrity judges on season 2 of the hit TV show "The Voice.” Gina
continues singing professionally, is a published songwriter and
has produced a number of record albums.
