The Euphoria Dance Studio moved into the old Video Ezy store in Linwood Village in January, with the goal of helping re-energise the neglected suburb through dance classes and shows. Founder Jobelle Nunez hopes it will inspire people when they walk by to come inside and say hello. “Sometimes people would knock and just say: ‘Oh, your Jobelle Nunez place looks amazing’. So I think, you know, if it brightens their day, I think we’re doing a pretty good job.” She said dancing is therapeutic. “I teach ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary and hip-hop. But mostly what I teach here at Euphoria is hip-hop.” Linwood Village has just received a major makeover by the city council. The master plan aims to make the impoverished suburb more “people friendly” with wider footpaths, more trees and improved lighting. • Turn to page 4 TRANSFORMED: The old Video Ezy building on Stanmore Rd has been turned into a thriving dance studio. The Back to Base challenge officially began last week, and will run through August. Participants can choose from four distances – 9km, 49km, 97km, and 155km – and can complete their chosen distance through walking, running, riding or skiing, all while gaining sponsors. All money raised will go towards the Westpac and Roa Mining rescue helicopters. One person supporting the cause is Ron Towner who Ron Towner gained the nickname ‘Airman Ron’ in 2022 after raising $91,000 while walking 90km in the area around his home before his 90th birthday. Frosty warming hearts at hospital
THERAPY: Frosty works her
magic with a patient and
registered nurse Michael
Reamico.
THE ATMOSPHERE inside
Christchurch Hospital always
warms up when Frosty arrives.
Frosty, a two-and-a-half-yearold
labrador retriever, is part of
Canine Friends Pet Therapy.
She does her rounds
through wards 16 and 17 every
Wednesday.
Frosty’s journey to her current
role is as heartwarming as her
presence.
Her story began with Nette,
a long-time volunteer, who
initially fostered Frosty.
Although she did not pass the
rigorous service dog training,
Frosty’s charm and warmth
led to her becoming a beloved
part of Nette’s family, alongside
partner Greg and their cat Cola.
After excelling in canine pet
therapy training, Frosty now
visits the hospital regularly,
wearing the red bandanna that
signifies her special role.
Her visits have quickly become
a highlight for patients and staff,
offering a welcome respite from
the clinical atmosphere.
The benefits of Frosty’s
therapy are significant. Studies
show interactions with therapy
dogs can reduce anxiety, lower
blood pressure, and alleviate
feelings of loneliness and
depression.
Frosty’s gentle, affectionate
nature provides patients with
emotional comfort and a sense
of companionship, contributing
positively to their overall wellbeing
and recovery.
The sight of Frosty trotting
through the wards brings smiles
and joy, easing the stress and
loneliness often felt in a hospital
setting, said volunteers manager
Louise Hoban-Watson.
“The success of this
programme, thanks to Nette’s
dedication and Frosty’s natural
ability to comfort, has led
to hopes of expanding the
initiative.
“For now, Frosty’s weekly
visits continue to bring warmth
and healing, underscoring the
powerful impact of pet therapy
in enhancing patients’ lives.”
WELCOME: Frosty, accompanied by owner Nette, is a regular
visitor to Christchurch Hospital.
More than $78,000 has been
raised towards the $105,000 goal
since the challenge got under way.
As of yesterday, the Halswell
Running Group has raised the
most money with a tally of more
than $2100.
Intensive care paramedic Adrian
Hurst is taking part by swimming.
He said doing the challenge was
a fantastic way for himself and
other paramedics to maintain their
health and mental wellbeing.
“Every day we need to be fit
enough to swim in rough seas if
we’re involved in a sea rescue, or
climb up hills and through bush to
find a patient who’s been injured
out tramping. Even being winched
from the helicopter means we need
to be really fit. It’s an intense kind
of job.”
Anabel Darby is running 5km a
day around Hagley Park as part of
the 155km challenge.
“It’s really motivating. It’s
beautiful to get out every morning
and feel that you’re doing
something for yourself and for this
as well,” she said.
Enviro Master helping
Cantabrians
Enviro Master has been helping
Cantabrians get the balance right when
it comes to choosing the perfect heat
pump or air conditioning system for
their home or office since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people,
qualified electricians, heating and
refrigeration engineers, help to supply
and install one of Christchurch’s
widest range of heat pumps including
Panasonic, Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin
and Fujitsu. Because they have no
affiliation with any one brand, you can
be assured their advice on the benefits
and differences between each product is
unbiased.
They will recommend the most
energy-efficient and cost-effective system
for your individual situation, and will
have you regulating the heat in your
home or office in no time.
Nowadays, customers are often
wanting whole home solutions to be
able to maintain even temperatures
throughout the home both in Winter
and Summer. This can be achieved by
using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in
designing, installing and commissioning
these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy offering 80 per cent
of the cost of a new heat pump up to
$3000 including GST.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer
Kiwi Homes initiative and is available
to Home owner/occupiers with a
Community Services Card, a SuperGold
combo card or who live in a low-income
area as determined by deciles 8-10 on
the New Zealand Deprivation Index.
advertorial
The applicant’s home must also have
been built before 2008, have insulation
up to code (insulation subsidies also
available) and have no fixed heating
in any living area, such as an existing
operational heat pump or fireplace.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
individual situation, offer advice and
answer any questions you may have.
This consultation is at no cost to the
customer and is always provided before a
FROM RUNDOWN TO REVIVED: The old Video Ezy store on Stanmore Rd
has been turned into a dance studio.
PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
Dancer creates a
thriving community
• From page 1
Nunez is proud to be among the
businesses and residents breathing life
back into the area.
She started dancing in the Philippines
when she was six and continued after
moving to New Zealand in 2018 with her
family.
Nunez founded Euphoria Dance Studio
in her garage three years ago, with five
students.
But strong interest saw the studio grow
to more than 130 students, requiring a
much bigger space.
“Sometimes I give out free classes every
year just to give back to the community.
“Because again, it’s not about the money
at the end of the day, it’s just about, you
know, giving love to anyone who needs it.”
The experienced dancer has ambitions
to one day open more branches around the
city.
She is also seeking sponsorship so she
can offer more free or subsidised dance
classes to the community, allowing her
to pass on her knowledge to the next
generation of hip-hoppers.
Coastguard seeking replacement
as long-serving tractor nears end
COASTGUARD Canterbury’s
beloved ‘Big Blue Tractor’ is
on its last set of wheels after
more than a decade of towing
rescue boats out to sea.
Members are now seeking
a replacement for the vehicle
affectionately known as BBT
and hope someone in the
community will donate a
tractor.
“If we got a replacement
tractor that would be great
and what would be even
better is if someone gifted one
to us,” said board member
Carolyn Tapley.
BBT has towed the
Lyttelton-based coastguard’s
Canterbury Rescue vessel into
the harbour for hundreds
of callouts and training
exercises, but its brakes and
engine have become faulty.
“The poor girl, she sat
outside for the last 15 years
in the elements exposed to
coastal conditions.”
These issues have led to
costly repair jobs and a
new reliance on coastguard
member’s personal towing
vehicles to give the worn out
BBT breaks.
Coastguard members are
feeling sentimental about
the tractor’s decline and are
BLUE BEAUTY: Coastguard Canterbury is bidding a fond farewell to its ‘Big Blue
Tractor’ as it sees its last days of towing rescue boats. Board member Carolyn Tapley
is appealing for the community to donate a tractor which can replace the BBT’s
towing capabilities.
paying tribute to its assistance
in critical call outs.
“She’s not a boat, but she
has played a role in saving
lives,” said Tapley.
A suitable replacement
tractor could cost Coastguard
Centuries-old folk remedy
supports good health!
A fermented liquid health tonic offers an
array of powerful health benefits. It is none
other than the popular apple cider vinegar
or ACV. Since the time of Hippocrates –
the “Father of Medicine” – ACV has been
renowned for its curative properties.
In his popular book “ARTHRITIS &
FOLK MEDICINE,” DR. D.C. Jarvis
reports how he found that Vermonters
who regularly consumed ACV and Honey
had excellent health, with many putting
in a vigorous day’s work on the farm
even when well into their eighties. Jarvis
also noted the effects of ACV and H on
arthritis to be remarkable, with many
patients reporting almost total relief after
taking a course of the mixture. Dr. Jarvis
surmised that the acid and potassium
in cider vinegar counteracted calcium
deposits and helped the body control
calcium use. Jarvis also noted that Vermonters who consumed
ACV and H around mealtime had excellent blood pressure
and circulation. He found that protein foods thickened the
blood and vinegar thinned it. As the blood thickens, it cannot
pass easily through the blood vessels and capillaries. This
poor blood flow would reduce cellular health by limiting
nutrients to the cells and eliminating waste from the cells. The
body naturally increases blood pressure to prevent cellular
damage, which puts more stress on the blood vessels, organs,
and the heart. Having ACV and H with meals will help
prevent protein raising blood pressure. It also contributes
to a feeling of greater well-being because the thinner blood
circulates quickly and more easily through
the blood vessels. Dr. Jarvis found regular
consumption of CV and H to be an
excellent health tonic with numerous
health attributes.
ACV is highly nutritious as it contains
all the goodness of the apple in a form
that is readily accepted by the body.
Good health starts with good digestion
and assimilation of nutrients. ACV taken
before food will stimulate and promote
healthy digestion and assimilation of
vital nutrients for good health. A wellfunctioning
digestive system helps prevent
disease by neutralising toxic substances
that enter the body.
It is important to note that not all ACV
is produced traditionally, and results are
likely to prove disappointing with some
other cider vinegar.
Tips to save money on
warming winter food
Good hot food is essential to
surviving winter. The folks at
Love Food Hate Waste have
some tips on how to do it
economically
Eat seasonally
Eating seasonally is an easy way to cut down
on grocery bills. Opt for vegetables like
cabbage, celery, leeks, carrots and silverbeet,
which should be cheaper this time of year.
Frozen vegetables are also a great option as
they are cheap, nutritious, pre-prepared and
won’t go bad.
Store seasonal produce correctly
Winter produce such as pumpkin, root
vegetables and citrus fruits have longer shelf
lives when stored properly. Keep whole
pumpkin in a cool room with the stalk
side down, then wrap and refrigerate once
cut or cut into cubes and freeze. Citrus
fruits, carrots and leafy greens last longer
in the crisper drawer in the fridge. A cool
dark place is the best place for onions and
potatoes, just remember to keep them away
from each other.
Freeze winter harvests
Blanch and freeze vegetables such as kale,
cauliflower, spinach and Brussels sprouts
to use in soups, stir-fries and warm salads
throughout the year. Squeeze citrus juices
into ice cube trays and transfer into a
resealable freezer bag once frozen. You can
then enjoy lemon juice in your salads or
orange juice in drinks when citrus can be
more expensive.
Serve soup
Soups are a wonderful way to make a small
amount of food go a long way. Not only are
they simple to make, but they are also very
comforting. You can add all sorts of leftover
meat, vegetables, pasta and grains, making
them a perfect vehicle for making the most
of your food.
Additionally, soups can be made in large
batches, providing multiple servings to
enjoy throughout the week.
Use a slow cooker
Slow cookers are a game-changer for winter
cooking. They use low, consistent heat
over an extended period, making them
incredibly energy efficient. Here are some
specific ways a slow cooker can help you
save money without compromising on taste:
• Using cheaper cuts of meat: Slow
cookers are perfect for tenderising tougher,
less expensive cuts of meat. The low
and slow cooking process breaks down
connective tissues, resulting in tender,
flavourful dishes without the high price tag
of prime cuts.
• Cook once, eat twice: Bulk cooking is a
fantastic way to save both time and money
and slow cookers are ideal for making
large batches of food, allowing you to cook
once and enjoy meals for several days.
This not only saves time but also reduces
the frequency of cooking, leading to lower
energy consumption. Freeze portions in
airtight containers, ensuring you always
have a home-cooked meal ready to go.
• Recipe versatility: The versatility of
a slow cooker means you can make use
of odds and ends of vegetables and other
ingredients that might otherwise go to
waste. You can experiment with a wide
range of recipes, from hearty beef stews to
vegetarian chili, creamy oatmeal, or even
desserts such as apple crumble.
This adaptability keeps your meals
interesting and varied while making the
most of your food and the budget.
Green leek and potato soup
Ingredients
50g butter
3 large potatoes
1 large leek
Salt, to taste
Pepper, to taste
4 cups vegetable stock
1 cup milk
200g bacon (optional)
Method
1. Melt butter in a large saucepan over a
medium heat.
2. Wash potatoes, leaving skin on, and cut
into 1cm cubes. Add to the pan.
3. Cut white part of leek into small rounds
and add to pan. Remove green leaves,
separate and wash thoroughly in water
to remove any dirt residue. Cut into thin
ribbons and add to pan, along with whites.
4. Stir well so all vegetables are evenly coated
in butter. Add salt and pepper. Turn down
heat to low, cover with a lid and allow to
gently heat for 10 minutes. Stir occasionally
so the vegetables do not brown.
5. Add vegetable stock to the pan, stir, then
simmer for 30 minutes.
6. Use a potato masher to roughly break up
the potato to thicken the soup.
7. Add milk and bring to a simmer.
8. If you are using bacon, heat a frying pan
on a medium heat. Thinly slice the bacon
and add to the frying pan. Fry until crispy
or cooked to your liking.
9. Ladle soup into bowls and sprinkle with
the bacon.
