the teams. Boys’ High 

have won 86 games and 

Christ’s 43, with nine 

draws over the years since 

their first clash in 1892. 

Most recently, Boys’ 

High came out on top in 

round 3 in June – winning 

34-25 – and are riding 

an eight-game winning 

streak in the competition, 

while Christ’s only sealed 

their place thanks to 

victory over St Thomas in 

Saturday’s final round of 

games.

Going the

raise funds 

for rescue 

helicopters

MORE THAN 100 individuals 

and 14 groups are taking part in a 

month-long fundraiser to support 

Canterbury rescue helicopters. 

The Back to Base challenge 

officially began last week, and 

will run through August. 

Participants can choose from 

four distances – 9km, 49km, 

97km, and 155km – and can 

complete their chosen distance 

through walking, running, 

riding or skiing, all while gaining 

sponsors.

towards the 

Westpac and Roa

helicopters.

Ron said he was “very pleased” 

with the $1500 he was able to 

raise.

Frosty warming hearts at hospital

Christchurch Hospital always 

warms up when Frosty arrives. 

Frosty, a two-and-a-half-yearold 

labrador retriever, is part of 

Canine Friends Pet Therapy. 

She does her rounds 

through wards 16 and 17 every 

Wednesday. 

Frosty’s journey to her current 

role is as heartwarming as her 

presence. 

Her story began with Nette, 

a long-time volunteer, who 

initially fostered Frosty. 

Although she did not pass the 

rigorous service dog training, 

Frosty’s charm and warmth 

led to her becoming a beloved 

part of Nette’s family, alongside 

partner Greg and their cat Cola. 

After excelling in canine pet 

therapy training, Frosty now 

visits the hospital regularly, 

wearing the red bandanna that 

signifies her special role. 

Her visits have quickly become 

a highlight for patients and staff, 

offering a welcome respite from 

the clinical atmosphere. 

The benefits of Frosty’s 

therapy are significant. Studies 

show interactions with therapy 

dogs can reduce anxiety, lower 

blood pressure, and alleviate 

feelings of loneliness and 

depression. 

Frosty’s gentle, affectionate 

nature provides patients with 

emotional comfort and a sense 

of companionship, contributing 

positively to their overall wellbeing 

and recovery. 

The sight of Frosty trotting 

through the wards brings smiles 

and joy, easing the stress and 

loneliness often felt in a hospital 

setting, said volunteers manager 

Louise Hoban-Watson. 

“The success of this 

programme, thanks to Nette’s 

dedication and Frosty’s natural 

ability to comfort, has led 

to hopes of expanding the 

initiative. 

“For now, Frosty’s weekly 

visits continue to bring warmth 

and healing, underscoring the 

powerful impact of pet therapy 

in enhancing patients’ lives.”

Running Group has raised the 

most money with a tally of more

Intensive care paramedic Adrian 

Hurst is taking part by swimming. 

He said doing the challenge was 

a fantastic way for himself and 

other paramedics to maintain their 

health and mental well-being. 

“Every day we need to be fit 

enough to swim in rough seas if 

we’re involved in a sea rescue, or 

climb up hills and through bush to 

find a patient who’s been injured 

out tramping. Even being winched 

from the helicopter means we need 

to be really fit. It’s an intense kind 

of job.” 

Anabel Darby is running 5km a 

day around Hagley Park as part of 

the 155km challenge. 

“It’s really motivating. It’s 

beautiful to get out every morning 

and feel that you’re doing 

something for yourself and for this 

as well,” she said.

Coastguard seeking replacement 

as long-serving tractor nears end

COASTGUARD Canterbury’s 

beloved ‘Big Blue Tractor’ is 

on its last set of wheels after 

more than a decade of towing 

rescue boats out to sea. 

Members are now seeking 

a replacement for the vehicle 

affectionately known as BBT 

and hope someone in the 

community will donate a 

tractor. 

“If we got a replacement 

tractor that would be great and 

what would be even better is if 

someone gifted one to us,” said 

board member Carolyn Tapley. 

BBT has towed the 

Lyttelton-based coastguard’s 

Canterbury Rescue vessel into 

the harbour for hundreds of 

callouts and training exercises, 

but its brakes and engine have 

become faulty. 

“The poor girl, she sat 

outside for the last 15 years 

in the elements exposed to 

coastal conditions.” 

These issues have led to 

costly repair jobs and a 

new reliance on coastguard 

member’s personal towing 

vehicles to give the worn out 

BBT breaks. 

Coastguard members are 

feeling sentimental about 

the tractor’s decline and are 

paying tribute to its assistance

CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High School 

and Christ’s College’s storied rivalry 

will be re-ignited in the Miles Toyota 

Premiership semi-final on Saturday. 

The two teams qualified for the semifinals 

after finishing in the top four, with 

Christ’s’ win over St Thomas in the final 

round boosting them to third and knocking 

St Thomas out. 

The other semi-final will see Tasman rivals 

Nelson College take on Marlborough 

Boys’ College. 

Boys’ High and Christ’s first played each 

other in 1892, and have squared off 138 

times – the most recent being a Boys’ High 

win, 34-25, in round 3. 

Boys’ High first XV head coach Rhys 

Archibald said he was expecting Christ’s 

to be up for it, in better form than that day. 

“They look like they’ve got better and 

better over the season, especially over the 

last few weeks. They played really well 

against St Thomas on Saturday,” he said. 

Christ’s head coach Sam Broomhall said 

their 32-25 win over St Thomas, which 

gave them a first semi-final appearance 

since 2021, was an emotional result. 

“It was a do or die match, there was a lot 

of emotion after the game, actually,” he 

said. 

“It means a lot for the lads and the team 

to make the semi-finals, it was part of our

the chance to play them again, it’s just 

something that our boys really enjoy. 

“They’re a quality team and they showed 

that last time we played them, they 

beat us well, so we get a second chance 

and the guys are just excited about that 

opportunity.”

Coastguard NZ by swimming 100km during The Big Swim fundraiser in July. 

Double distance pays 

off in fundraising swim

VOLUNTEER coastguard Andrew 

Southen has smashed his goal for The Big 

Swim by doubling his swimming and 

fundraising targets. 

The 64-year-old was raising money for 

Coastguard New Zealand as part of the 

July fundraiser, where participants were 

sponsored for swimming a distance of 

their choice. 

Southen raised $1505 from sponsors and 

swam 100km, averaging about 3.2km a 

day. 

His original goal was to raise $750 and 

swim 50km. 

“I’m happy with it. I thought realistically 

60km would be a good total,” he said. 

After joining the Lyttelton-based 

Coastguard Canterbury, he was 

inspired to make a difference for his 

new organisation. 

Although Southen is a strong swimmer 

and improved his fitness throughout the 

month, the challenge didn’t get easier. 

“You get pretty sore, because there’s no 

rest. 

“It was hard work and I’m not a young 

person anymore.” 

But raising as much as possible for other 

volunteers was a strong incentive to keep 

going after he met his 50km target in mid- 

July. 

“Hats off to the coastguard for running 

such a professional event,” he said. 

Southen is not taking much time to 

rest as he competes this weekend in 

the South Island masters short course 

championships at Jellie Park. 

“There’s still a bit to prepare for, but it 

won’t be quite as much as the big swim.”

“CHALLENGING but fun” is 

how Canterbury University law 

student Jack Eggleston described 

taking part in an army training 

exercise in dense West Coast 

bush. 

Private Eggleston, 20, joined 

Canterbury Company 2/4 

Battalion, Royal New Zealand 

Infantry Regiment, two years 

ago, because many of his mates 

had signed up and kept telling 

him about their adventurous 

weekends out in the bush. 

“Even today I’m still learning 

heaps. It challenges me and I 

love being outside away from the 

classroom,” he said. 

Training as a platoon in a 

company context, 54 NZ Army 

Reserve Force soldiers headed 

into the bush near Maruia as 

part of ‘Exercise Ramshead 

North’. 

The Canterbury Company 2/4 

Battalion soldiers’ goal was to 

combine core infantry fire and 

movement drills into platoonsized 

battle scenarios as they 

prepared for a major exercise in 

Tekapo later this month. 

The soldiers from Nelson, 

Blenheim, Christchurch 

and Timaru spent two days 

relearning dismounted infantry 

combat skills as they faced 

ambushes, patrolling and 

conducting platoon-sized attacks 

against an elusive enemy. 

“Working in such a large 

group makes it very different 

from just training within your 

section,” Eggleston said.

Battalion Lieutenant Colonel 

Gareth Seeds said the battalion 

was focused on relearning the 

core infantry battle skills needed 

to conduct light infantry combat 

operations, as this is a vital requirement 

of Plan Anzac. 

“It was great to see the soldiers 

and commanders getting back 

in the close country and putting 

these skills into action. 

“Plan Anzac is the NZ Army’s 

refocus on inter-operability with 

our Australian ally and other 

regional partners. 

“Exercise Ramshead North 

was a great chance for our young 

soldiers and commanders to 

learn how to work again as a 

fighting team. Prepared to face 

challenges and react to the many 

varied and complex fast-paced 

situations they could face in 

combat.” 

Seeds said it was also a chance 

for junior officers to learn 

how to manage a larger number 

of soldiers in a fluid environment. 

“Especially given the unit’s 

next field activity is ‘Exercise 

Ypres’, which involves a platoon 

live field firing exercise in 

Tekapo.”

Ways to save on warming winter food

Eat seasonally 

Eating seasonally is an easy way 

to cut down on grocery bills. Opt 

for vegetables like cabbage, celery, 

leeks, carrots and silverbeet, 

which should be cheaper this time 

of year. Frozen vegetables are also 

a great option as they are cheap, 

nutritious, pre-prepared and won’t 

go bad. 

Store seasonal produce 

correctly 

Winter produce such as pumpkin, 

root vegetables and citrus fruits 

have longer shelf lives when stored 

properly. Keep whole pumpkin 

in a cool room with the stalk side 

down, then wrap and refrigerate 

once cut or cut into cubes and 

freeze. Citrus fruits, carrots and 

leafy greens last longer in the 

crisper drawer in the fridge. A 

cool dark place is the best place 

for onions and potatoes, just 

remember to keep them away 

from each other. 

Freeze winter harvests 

Blanch and freeze vegetables 

such as kale, cauliflower, spinach 

and Brussels sprouts to use in

Slow cookers are perfect for 

tenderising tougher, less expensive 

cuts of meat. The low and slow

• Cook once, eat twice: Bulk 

cooking is a fantastic way to save

Green leek & potato soup 

Ingredients 

50g butter 

3 large potatoes 

1 large leek 

Salt, to taste 

Pepper, to taste 

4 cups vegetable stock 

1 cup milk 

200g bacon (optional) 

Method 

1. Melt butter in a large saucepan 

over a medium heat. 

2. Wash potatoes, leaving skin on, 

and cut into 1cm cubes. Add to 

the pan. 

3. Cut white part of leek into small 

rounds and add to pan. Remove 

green leaves, separate and wash 

thoroughly in water to remove 

any dirt residue. Cut into thin 

ribbons and add to pan, along 

with whites. 

4. Stir well so all vegetables are 

evenly coated in butter. Add salt 

and pepper. Turn down heat to 

low, cover with a lid and allow to 

gently heat for 10 minutes. Stir 

occasionally so the vegetables do 

not brown. 

5. Add vegetable stock to the pan, 

stir, then simmer for 30 minutes. 

6. Use a potato masher to roughly 

break up the potato to thicken the 

soup. 

7. Add milk and bring to a 

simmer. 

8. If you are using bacon, heat a 

frying pan on a medium heat. 

Thinly slice the bacon and add to 

the frying pan. Fry until crispy or 

cooked to your liking. 

9. Ladle soup into bowls and 

sprinkle with the bacon.

Four-wheel drive CR-V a smooth operator 

OF THE THREE latest Honda 

CR-V SUVs sold here, the AWD 

to me is the best fit with our 

active Kiwi outdoor lifestyles 

and sense of adventure, and the 

fact it’s the cheapest model is an 

added bonus. 

The feisty 1.5-litre 

turbocharged petrol engine 

carries over unchanged from 

the previous model. Two of the 

three variants use this motor, the 

seven-seat $57,000, 2WD Sport 

and the $53,000 five-seat AWD 

Sport being reviewed here. A 

2.0-litre four-cylinder hybrid 

power train is exclusive to the 

flagship $67,000 RS. 

Punting the test vehicle along 

with enthusiasm and almost

boundless energy is an upgraded 

version of Honda’s proven 1.5L 

turbo engine. The upgrade hasn’t 

changed the headline maximum 

power and torque figures that 

remain at 140kW and 240Nm 

respectively. Its newfound 

smoother post-upgrade 

drivability is more important 

than these numbers. 

Torque enters the fray from just 

1700rpm, and is all about work 

and honest endeavour as it digs 

deep to unearth as much lowspeed 

pulling power as possible. 

In real world driving, the 

motor is flexible enough, 

although no class-leader with 

good, rather than exhilarating 

acceleration. 

Ratings out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 7; Build Quality 

8; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 8; Styling 7; Value 

for money 7; Safety – not yet tested.

A Constant Variable 

Transmission (CVT) shared 

with the Honda Civic gels nicely 

with the motor for consistently 

smooth gear changes. However, 

the transmission is noisier when 

worked hard on hilly terrain. 

An impressively proportioned 

and finished cabin adds plenty of 

appeal with generous passenger 

and load space dimensions that 

are bettered by few of its rivals. I 

would like to have seen a larger 

and better quality scuff plate for 

the door openings in such a high 

wear area. 

Honda has a put a big effort 

into getting the small things right 

in the passenger compartment. 

A good example is the clever 

combination of big buttons 

and digital controls that merge 

seamlessly into the honeycomb 

ventilation system which is 

spread across the full length of 

the dashboard. 

Oddly enough, the AWD 

variant is the most affordable 

CR-V. 

This one is particularly good 

value with a generous list of 

standard features including 

wireless Apple CarPlay/Android 

Auto viewed on a nine-inch 

display, and wireless charging. 

Not such a good look is the lack 

of a head-up display and manual 

rather than automatic retracting 

exterior mirrors. 

Safety has also been upgraded 

to the latest Honda Sensing 

Safety System. Torso airbags are 

the most significant addition, 

and complement the rear curtain 

airbags. 

The latest version of Honda’s 

Intelligent Real Time AWD 

System offers a noticeable 

increase in maximum rear wheel 

torque delivery for greater grip 

across range of surfaces. 

The front MacPherson strut 

and rear multi-link suspension 

uses Honda’s amplitude reactive 

dampers, featuring tubular 

front and solid rear stabilisers 

for crisper steering turn-in and 

flatter and more stable cornering. 

The suspension is more 

measured in its responses to 

sudden and unexpected road 

surface deviations. In town 

driving, the ride feels a little 

stiffer than the old model, but 

this is something I could live 

with, given the vehicle’s greatly 

improved handling.
