Profile
BekaertDeslee doesn’t rest
when it comes to reducing
carbon emissions
The textile industry ranks among Europe’s top 5 contributors
to greenhouse gas emissions. To help combat climate change,
BekaertDeslee has set near-term emission reduction targets
aligned with the Paris Agreement. They have now been approved
by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), an independent
organization.
The production and consumption
of clothing has
a negative impact on the
environment and climate change.
Household textiles, including
mattresses, also play a substantial
role. For instance, 35 million
mattresses are incinerated or
end up in landfills each year in
Europe.
Eric Lachambre, CEO of Bekaert-
Deslee states: “We are dedicated
to improving the lives of many
by committing to a significant
reduction of our carbon footprint.
By calculating our emissions according
to the Greenhouse Gas
Protocol and identifying reduction
opportunities, we aim to achieve
our goals with the support of the
Science Based Targets initiative
(SBTi).”
Targets for 2030 approved
Specifically, BekaertDeslee
commits to reducing its Scope 1
(direct emissions from owned or
controlled sources) and Scope 2
(indirect emissions from the generation
of purchased electricity,
heating and cooling) emissions
by 64.2% by 2030 compared
to 2021 levels. In 2023, this
amounted to 46,395 tCO2e,
which represents less than 10%
of the company’s total footprint.
The vast majority of the footprint
is linked to BekaertDeslee’s
upstream and downstream value
chain (Scope 3), mainly from
purchased goods and services
and end-of-life of sold products.
In 2023, this totaled 483,184
tCO2e, equivalent to approximately
274,538 round-trip flights
from Paris to New York. These
targets have now been validated
by the Science Based Targets initiative
(SBTi), a corporate climate
action organization that enables
companies and financial institutions
across the globe combat
the climate crisis.
Ambitious actions for all scopes
To achieve their goals, BekaertDeslee
plans to implement
various measures. Kévin
Burkel, Executive Vice President
14 SleepTech • July - August

for Sustainability, Marketing &
Strategy explains: “For Scope
1, we will install energy-efficient
heating systems, develop new,
more energy-efficient manufacturing
processes and machines,
improve the energy performance
of existing facilities, and invest in
renewable energy infrastructure.”
Reducing Scope 2 emissions is
a short-term priority for Bekaert-
Deslee. “We are increasingly
purchasing more and more green
electricity for our plants, in combination
with investing in our own
renewable energy capacities. For
Scope 3, our major contributors
are our purchased materials
and the end-of-life impact of our
products. We are engaging with
our suppliers and customers to
reduce the carbon footprint of
our products. The major levers
are to work with more recycled
materials instead of virgin materials,
to develop products that
are easier to recycle, and also to
source more renewable materials.
One pivotal initiative involves
recycling our textile waste, aiming
for a cradle-to-cradle solution.”
For BekaertDeslee, reducing CO2
emissions is part of the sustainability
roadmap, which includes
material topics such as sustainable
products, climate and circular
economy. Eric Lachambre,
CEO of BekaertDeslee, elaborates:
“We will continue working
on a more holistic sustainability
strategy to build a better tomorrow
and to secure our industry
leadership role for the future.”
BekaertDeslee is forging, go to
the pulse of the
sector and meet
with our suppliers
and potential
customers.
Could you evaluate the
current situation of the Turkish
bed components industry?
What do you think are the main
problems of the industry and
what needs to be done?
The current situation of the Turkish
mattress components industry is
getting better every day. Our industry
stakeholders, like us, are developing
their R&D departments and enabling
mattress manufacturers to make
top class mattresses. We are in a
position to have a say in the world
market on the basis of both mattress
components and final products. But
unfortunately, we have difficulties in
price competition due to labor and
logistics costs.
Can we get your predictions and
general evaluations regarding
the IBIA EXPO exhibition to be
organised in September?
We are looking forward to the IBIA
Expo, which will be held for the
third time in September, and we are
excitedly waiting for the fair to be
organized. The IBIA Association is
improving every year and making
improvements in the exhibition. There
is a demand for the fair both from
home and abroad. We hope that
we will have a busy and productive
fair this year as well, and as sector
stakeholders, we will provide a large
amount of foreign currency inflow to
our country.
Events
interzum 2025’s new
central theme: “Rethinking
Resources: Circular and
Biobased Solutions”
The circular economy and biobased solutions as sustainable sources of
resources for furniture production and interior design are set to be the
focus of interzum 2025. With this new central theme, the sector’s leading
international trade fair will continue to provide clear momentum for the
sustainable stewardship of raw materials at next year’s event. Many different
aspects of the industry-relevant central theme will be presented on the
Koelnmesse exhibition grounds from 20 to 23 May 2025 and brought to life
in showcases for participants to experience. The theme will be discussed as
part of the diverse event program and addressed by numerous innovative
products and concepts presented by exhibitors.
In 2025, the organizers plan
to expand on and develop the
concept of “Neo-Ecology”,
which was the central theme for
the 2023 edition of interzum.
“With ‘Rethinking Resources:
Circular and Biobased Solutions’
as its central theme, interzum will
address one of neo-ecology’s key
pillars,” explains Maik Fischer, the
Director of interzum. “By bringing
together the two approaches
– the circular economy and
biobased materials – the world’s
leading trade fair for furniture
production and interior design
will advance the development of
product innovations that are both
long-lasting and produced from
sustainable sources.”
Focus on the sustainable use of
resources
With its new central theme, the
trade fair will highlight two fundamental
concepts in the stewardship
of resources. Transitioning
to a circular economy means
keeping materials and products
in the economic cycle for as
long as possible by extending
the duration of their use through
reuse, repair, refurbishment and
recycling. By contrast, biobased
solutions use materials produced
from regrowing sources, making
them environmentally friendly
Foam vs. spring mattresses:
Major differences and how
to choose
Shopping for a new mattress can be a confusing process. With
hundreds of beds to choose from across dozens of categories, it
can start to feel overwhelming. Fortunately, you can narrow down
your search easily by focusing on one big question: Do you want a
foam or an innerspring mattress?
We’ll focus on the differences
between foam
versus spring mattresses.
By learning more about these
two categories, you can become
better informed when it comes to
choosing the right mattress for
your needs.
What’s the difference between
a memory foam vs spring mattress?
It all comes down to the
materials used and the style
of construction. The details of
each style are discussed in later
sections.
Which is better? There’s no
definitive answer to that
question
Of the two mattress types, innerspring
beds are the older and
more “traditional” option. Some
may think of them as old-fashioned,
but there are plenty of
high quality, comfortable, and
modern spring mattresses available.
Foam mattresses are a newer
concept, but exceptionally
popular. While memory foam was
originally invented in the 1960s,
the foams used today are far
more advanced. Manufacturers
now create specialty foams
designed for specific applications
– cooling, support, pressure relief
– and combine them to develop
well-rounded mattresses.
When comparing foam vs spring
mattresses, there’s no clear
“best” or “worst” option. There
are simply too many variables to
consider to make a generalized
claim that one is better than the
other.
Rather, it is better to frame the
question as a matter of which
one is the better choice for
you and your needs. Each type
of mattress tends to perform
better in certain ways, making
them generally better suited to
File
the needs of different kinds of
sleepers. There is also plenty of
variation in performance among
models of the same type, making
it important to investigate how a
mattress is constructed.
If you’re trying to pick between
a foam and spring mattress,
you’ll need to consider factors
like sleep position, body weight,
budget, and personal sleep preferences.
Our quiz below will help
you figure out if a foam or spring
bed is the right fit for you.
What is a foam mattress?
Foam mattresses are all-foam
beds that are exceptionally popular
for online mattress shoppers.
They can be made out of
a variety of foam materials, from
memory foam to polyfoam, and
typically contain several unique
layers. Foam beds can be soft or
firm, budget or luxury, so there is
a huge amount of variety within
this category.
Foam beds utilize a variety of
materials to provide support
and pressure relief. There are
many types of foams, and often
manufacturers will utilize several
materials in each mattress.
Types of foam
Polyurethane (Poly) Foam –
Foam made from polyurethane,
commonly referred to as simply
“polyfoam,” is a very common
ingredient in modern foam beds.
Polyfoam is known to be much
bouncier and springier than materials
like memory foam. Polyfoam
is popular for use as a layer
in modern all-foam mattresses,
as well as for the top comfort
layer in spring beds.
• Regular polyfoam is a standard,
relatively soft foam used primarily
in transition layers.
• High-density polyfoam is firmer
and often used in underlying
support layers.
• High-resiliency polyfoam is
firmer and more supportive, but
significantly more expensive, so
its use is less common.
Memory Foam – Memory foam
is another very commonly used
foam material. It’s made from
similar polyurethane materials,
with added ingredients to increase
its density and viscosity.
Memory foam is great for pressure
relief, as it contours to the
shape of the body. The term
“memory” in memory foam refers
to the material’s tendency to
retain the shape of the body for a
few seconds after being indented.
• Standard memory foam is the
traditional material that’s soft yet
supportive, and generally affordable.
• Open-cell memory foam is designed
with openings in the tiny
cells of foam, allowing for better
40 SleepTech • July - August

File
airflow. This material feels a bit
softer, and it will sleep cooler on
warm nights.
• Gel memory foam has tiny
gel beads embedded into the
memory foam material. The gel,
combined with the open-cell
design, helps to improve cooling
and airflow.
Latex Foam – Latex is a natural
rubber-like material that can be
used to make a durable and
bouncy foam. Latex mattresses
are typically
considered a category
of their
own,
but
some
manufacturers also use a thin
layer of latex in all-foam beds.
Latex is often prized for its
durability and environmental
friendliness, although it is generally
much more expensive than
traditional polyurethane-based
foams.
• Dunlop latex is made using a
more traditional, simple process,
and results in a somewhat firmer
feel.
• Talalay latex foam is a more
energy-intensive process
that produces
latex with a bouncier, yet
softer feel.
Remember that most mattress
manufacturers use a mix of
different foam materials to create
a well-balanced and comfortable
bed. Typically you will see
foam mattresses constructed
of 2-5 layers, each with varying
materials, densities, and intended
purposes. When it comes
to budget mattresses, you may
see single-layer polyfoam beds
– but otherwise, expect a blend
of foam layers in most modern
mattresses.
What is a Spring Mattress?
Spring mattresses, also called
innerspring mattresses, are beds
that utilize dozens to hundreds of
metal springs to provide an underlying
support layer. They also
have softer plush material layers
to increase comfort. Some find
that spring mattresses feel more
supportive than foam, at least
initially. This is particularly true for
heavier people, who may benefit
more from the coiled spring support
systems than a foam base.
Several factors can influence how
a spring bed feels. Coil count is
an important factor; most quality
beds will have around 400 coils
or more in a queen size mattress.
However, keep in mind that a
higher coil count does not necessarily
equal a higher quality bed,
as there are many factors at play.
Spring beds will also often have
foam layers surrounding the
coils, as well as a plush or polyfoam
comfort
layer
on top.
42 SleepTech • July - August

File
The quality, material, and thickness
of these layers can greatly
influence the comfort and feel of
the mattress.
Coil gauge, referring to the
thickness of the wire used,
influences the firmness of the
bed. Manufacturers will clearly
list the intended firmness of each
mattress model, so checking the
coil gauge is not too important
for consumers.
Lastly, the various types of
springs used in these mattresses
will impact their comfort and
support ratings.
Types of Springs/Coils
Bonnell Coils – Bonnell coils are
the original design used in the
first spring mattresses, and some
manufacturers still use them today.
They are hourglass-shaped
and can be made to be either
soft or firm depending on the
wire gauge. Bonnell coils are
simple and cost-effective, so
many mattresses utilize them.
Pocket Coils – Also called pocketed
coils, this design features
metal coils that are individually
wrapped in fabric sleeves. This
allows each coil to move independently
from one another,
which has the added effect of reducing
noise. Pocketed coils are
often used in higher-end beds,
and are generally more expensive
to make. They do a great job
of providing targeted pressure
relief, and tend to provide a more
buoyant feel overall.
Offset Coils – Offset coils share
some properties of pocket coils,
but they are joined together with
hinged wires. This allows the
coils to flex under soft pressure,
but provide firm support when it’s
needed. Offset coils can provide
more firmness than pocketed
coils, so many innerspring beds
with higher firmness ratings over
7 out of 10 will use some form of
offset coil. Beyond this application,
offset coils are not commonly
used.
Continuous Coils – Continuous
coil design features a single wire
that is used to construct an en-
44 SleepTech • July - August

File
tire row of “coils”. Each of these
rows is then attached to each
other using helical wires. This
design provides a very firm support
system, but because each
component is joined together,
continuous coils have much less
ability to shape themselves to a
body profile.
Which is better for you?
Ultimately, choosing the right bed
for you involves a lot more than
just picking between foam and
spring. There are high quality,
comfortable and supportive mattresses
of both types available
– so in the end, it’s more about
picking the right mattress model.
With that said, there are a few
last things to consider.
Most people will be happy with a
high-quality foam mattress. Foam
provides a great middle-ground
by offering a supportive and
pressure-relieving fit, while also
feeling soft and comfortable. Side
sleepers, in particular, tend to
prefer foam beds, as they often
do a better job of conforming to
the shape of the body.
People who tend to sleep hot at
night may wish to opt for a spring
mattress. Innerspring beds offer
far better airflow, which helps to
keep the bed cool at night.
Sleepers who are heavy or sleep
on their stomachs should opt
for either innerspring, hybrid, or
very firm foam beds, in order to
get enough support. Softer foam
models will likely sink too much
to feel comfortable for these
sleepers.
Most online mattress retailers
now offer free trial periods, where
you can test the bed for up to
several months. If you’re unsure
about a mattress, this flexibility
may provide a little reassurance
during the purchase process.
Profile
Precision Textiles partners
with Unifi to use eco-friendly
fibers in mattresses
As part of its ongoing commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, and
to help its customers satisfy consumer demand for more eco-friendly
mattresses, Precision Textiles has partnered with Unifi, Inc., the makers
of Repreve recycled performance fiber to use the company’s recycled
polyester yarn in the manufacturing of all its filler cloth products.
The first-of-its-kind collaboration
within the industry makes Precision
Textiles the only bedding
component manufacturer to use
Repreve recycled performance fiber
in its nonwoven products.
Repreve offers recycled polyester
fabrics to address the growing concern
related to plastic waste in the
environment. Its yarns are spun from
recycled plastic bottles that would
otherwise end up in landfills and our
oceans. The yarns provide an alternative
to virgin fibers and have been
proven to reduce climate change
potential by repurposing discarded
plastic, thereby mitigating the carbon
emissions associated with producing
new materials. The new partnership
offers an immediate positive impact
on Precision Textiles sustainability
initiatives and assures that the company
and its customers are part of
meaningful change that will contribute
to improving the world.
“We are extremely proud to be the
first and only FR nonwoven component
supplier to use Repreve recycled
performance fiber in our products,”
said Gerry Welkley, national
sales manager at Precision Textiles.
“This technology is being used in
many other industries by some of the
world’s most recognized brands, so
we are very excited to bring it to the
mattress industry. Today’s consumers
are increasingly conscious of
their environmental impact with their
product purchases. Because we
consume millions of pounds of yarn
during the manufacturing of our filler
cloth products, our collaboration with
Unifi showcases our dedication to
meeting these consumer expectations
for our customers and reaffirms
our commitment to a more sustainable
future.”
Every 100-yard roll of the company’s
Endure IFR and Advantage SB
non-woven products will include
Repreve recycled performance fiber
that is made from 228 recycled water
bottles. Asa result, Precision Textiles
will eliminate more than 20 million
plastic water bottles from waste
streams on an annual basis.
Bob O’Connell, executive vice
president marketing and merchandising
at Precision Textiles said, “Our
customers consistently ask how we
are handling sustainability and what
we can do to help them improve their
efforts to manufacture eco-friendly
products. Our partnership with
Repreve answers the call and allows
our customers to be part of this
initiative.”
Precision Textiles has long supported
environmental stewardship managing
resources in a way that assures sustainability
and benefits both present
and future generations. The company
produces and supplies one of the
most comprehensive assortments of
USDA Bio-Preferred and UL Greenguard
Gold certified FR solution
product lines throughout the entire
mattress industry.
As a leading supplier to mattress
manufacturers, the collaboration not
only illustrates Precision Textile’s fervent
commitment to environmentally
conscious initiatives, but it also resonates
with the values of conscientious
consumers who expect brands
to make products responsibly.
Elektroteks: Our product
range is unique in the world
Elektroteks invests in robotic technology to strengthen its leading
position in mattress production machines worldwide. Stating that
they are leading the sector with their R&D studies, Osman Güler
said that they aim to realise their dark factories as soon as possible.
Elektroteks exports to 130
countries worldwide with
the mattress production
machines manufactured in its
factories operating in Kayapa
Organised Industrial Zone and
Görükle Industrial Zone. Elektroteks,
which is the leading
company in the sector with its
technology, production quality
and successful performance,
continues to increase its production
every year.
Elektroteks, which was established
in Bursa in 1990 to provide
electrical-electronic services to
textile factories, has become
the choice of world giants in
mattress production machines.
Osman Güler, Chairman of the
Board of Directors of Elektroteks,
emphasised that every product
they produce is one step ahead
of their competitors and stated
that they are moving forward with
the aim of integrating robotic
systems into mattress production
processes.
Stating that not compromising
on quality is the most important
factor that makes the company
stand out, Güler said, “Quality is
one of our most basic principles.
We produce using the materials
of the world’s leading brands and
the highest quality raw materials.
This approach takes us one step
ahead in this sector.” Emphasising
that they continue on their
way with the claim and goal of
becoming a world leader, Osman
Güler stated that R&D studies
are indispensable. Stating that
the company works like an R&D
Centre with its R&D team of 45
people, Güler said, “We develop
4-5 projects every month by
allocating large budgets. We
serve the sector with nearly 400
different machines. The wide
range of products we have is
a feature that our competitors
around the world do not have.”
Osman Güler, Chairman of the
Board of Directors of Elektroteks,
stated that they continue their
R&D studies with the use of robot
technologies in the production of
mattress production machines.
Stating that there is a shortage
of employees to work in production
worldwide, Güler explained
that they aim to make robotic
technologies, which are successfully
used in sectors such as
automotive, effective in mattress
production.
Our goal is to establish a dark
factory
Stating that robotic technologies
cannot fully adapt to the sector
due to the characteristics of
the materials used in mattress
production, Güler said, “A robot
can easily carry materials such
as sheet metal, glass and MDF.
However, there are difficulties in
carrying flexible products such as
foam and fabric. As Elektroteks,
we have been working in this
field for 5-6 years and we have
achieved positive results. Our
goal is to establish dark factories
that will produce mattresses
worldwide.”
Osman Güler, Chairman of the
Board of Directors of Elektroteks,
stated that they planned their
goals in 6 stages and added;
“We have successfully implemented
the first three stages of
our plans. We have almost put
the final point on the 4th and 5th
stages. We have successfully
established approximately 20
facilities worldwide where our
robotic lines are integrated. We
are taking decisive steps towards
our goal of establishing a dark
mattress production factory in
2024.”
Güler added that as a result of
the studies they carried out,
they started the production of
production lines that have the
capacity to make a thousand
mattresses in foam mattresses
with 2 people in 8 hours.
Customised production
Emphasizing that they carry out
special production according
to customer demands, Osman
Güler said, “We develop products
by focusing on the needs
of our customers. They convey
their dreams to us, and we focus
on R&D studies to turn these
dreams into reality. As a result,
we successfully manufacture the
special product that our customers
want.”
Sharing the information that
they produce machinery worth 3
million dollars per month, Güler
said, “We continue our production
with more than 350 expert
staff in our facilities in Bursa. In
addition, we provide services on
a global scale with our businesses
located in different regions
around the world. We continue
our services for America with our
facility in the state of New Jersey
in the United States of America,
for Europe with our business in
Bulgaria and for that region with
our facility in India.”
Stating that they are preparing to
step into a new and different sector
besides the mattress sector,
Osman Güler said, “In addition,
we have started to build production
facilities for the foam manufacturing
plan, which is close to
mattress manufacturers.”
Environmentally friendly
production, woman-friendly
approach
Güler also
announced
that with the
investments
they have
realized,
they have
obtained
the energy they use from solar
energy. Stating that they have
reduced energy costs with this
investment, Güler said that they
have contributed to the protection
of nature with environmentally
friendly energy.
Stating that as Elektroteks, they
are working to increase women’s
employment, Osman Güler said,
“Although our sector is not very
much oriented towards women,
we try to prefer female personnel
in all the jobs that women
can do. We are sensitive to the
presence of women in business
life. In addition to white-collar
employees, we started to put
women in charge of the jobs
previously done by men in many
parts such as CNC machines,
serial points of machine assemblies,
automation departments
and wiring in the manufacturing
section. We see that they work
more efficiently and meticulously.
We currently have approximately
70 female employees, which
corresponds to 20 per cent of
our total employment.”
The mattress spring
industry continues to
experience raw material
shortages
We took the pulse of the sector from the main companies of Turkiye’s
mattress spring industry. We have compiled the problems of the iron
and steel sector and the proposed solutions with the statements we
received from the managers of Boyçelik, Kar-as, Nano Spring, Yılmar, Ay
Spring and ZebSprings.
The mattress sub-industry
industry continues to grow
and develop in Turkiye
as well as globally. Although
the spring sector, which is one
of the basic building blocks of
the industry, continues to grow
and develop in parallel with the
mattress sub-industry industry,
manufacturers face many problems
arising from both bureaucratic
processes and costs in the
export process. Especially the
shortage of raw materials, trade
embargo and logistics costs
are among these problems. In
order to keep the pulse of the
sector and to hear the voice of
the producers, we talked to the
producers about the problems
and solution suggestions.
Feridun Tosun, Boyçelik Export
Officer: The iron and steel sector
in Turkey is the sector that
feels the contraction in global
demand the most.
Turkey has an important place in
62 SleepTech • July - August

the world iron and steel industry.
In 2023, it contributed 27 billion
dollars to Turkey’s exports. 12.3
per cent of Turkey’s exports are
provided by the iron and steel
sector. For this reason, the sector
that feels the contraction in global
demand the most in Turkey is
the iron and steel sector. While
the Turkish economy grew by
5.6% and 4.5% between 2022
and 2023, the steel industry
contracted by 12.9% in 2022 and
4% in 2023.
It was seen that the inflation in
global markets limited foreign demand
and the most intense effect
of this was experienced in the
European market. At the same
time, increases in energy and labour
costs, protectionist policies,
quotas, taxes, etc. regulations,
cargo footprint processes have
been seen to have difficulties in
competition, which have forced
exporter companies. The interest
rate decisions of the European
Central Bank and the US Central
Bank are also one of the important
factors that negatively affect
the sector and reduce foreign
demand.
It is predicted that the sector
will recover if countries change
their interest rate policies, inflation
processes are taken under
control and protectionist policies
are abandoned. In this context,
the relevant institutions of the
state should carry out activities
to increase free trade, especially
with regard to quotas and import
taxes.
Kar-as Board Member M. Önder
Aslan: Solving the raw material
problem will encourage us to
produce more
The growth and
development of the
mattress sub-industry
of course means the
growth and development
of our industry.
We are satisfied with
the progress and
the point reached by
the mattress supply
industry in the last 5
years. However, if we
go back 4 years ago,
the increasing freight
and raw material
prices as a result of a crisis that
engulfed the whole world during
the pandemic process had put
us and our sector stakeholders
both globally and domestically in
a difficult situation. Since then,
although the freight crisis has
been overcome and prices have
decreased, problems continue
to be experienced in the supply
of raw materials at reasonable
prices. The momentum we have
gained in exports in the last 3
years amortizes this issue, but
solving this problem or taking
steps towards it will encourage
us to produce much more.
Nano Yay Company Owner
Serkan Kır: Reducing raw
material costs is a must for the
sake of the sector
If we talk specifically about the
mattress industry, I think that
SleepTech • July - August
63

File
thanks to the contributions of
the IBIA Association and the
IBIA Expo fair in the last 3 years,
we have overcome the stagnation
we experienced during the
pandemic period and the sector
has regained its vitality. When we
talk about the spring industry, of
course, we encounter different
and more dynamic dynamics.
The biggest factor here is ironsteel
prices and logistics costs.
Especially in terms of raw material
costs, the iron and steel sector
has been in great trouble since
the pandemic process. I do not
know how much these costs can
be minimized in the coming period,
but they need to be reduced
for the sake of the sector and for
us to move more comfortably in
terms of production.
Yılmar Company Manager
Zübeyde Yılmaz: Foreign
legislation and export incentives
should be reorganized
We are one of the largest spring
companies in the mattress
sub-industry sector operating in
Turkey and working for mattress
companies both at home and
abroad. Since 2001, we have
been operating in this sector and
we have an annual production
capacity of 45,000 tonnes. As
such, we can directly observe
and even personally experience
the problems in the spring and
steel wire sector. As of now,
both globally and in Turkey,
there is a raw material problem
and the problem of rising iron
and steel prices. In addition to
this problem, which started with
the pandemic and still continues,
we personally experienced
the logistics prices and freight
problems in the first two years
of the pandemic and experienced
the process. Although
the freight problem has been
solved for the last two years, the
problem in raw material prices
still continues. If these problems
are solved, both the global iron
and steel industry and the global
mattress industry and naturally
the Turkish mattress industry will
grow much more. The sector is
becoming more and more competitive
every day, both as a steel
producer and a spring producer.
But since the market has not
grown that much, the material
has become worthless. We
64 SleepTech • July - August

cannot achieve a sales volume
that can meet the increasing raw
material value. I think that foreign
legislation and export incentives
should be reconsidered.
Kürşat M. Katırcıgil, Member of
the Board of Directors of Ay Yay:
In order to provide better service
to the sector, disadvantages
should be reduced
As a company that manufactures
in the mattress industry, it is our
greatest wish that this industry
grows and develops. However,
some disadvantages need to
be reduced in order to provide
better service to the mattress
industry. There are export quotas
imposed on some of the countries
we export to, shortage of
raw materials, and issues that
our state elders should help us
with prices and logistics costs.
If these problems are solved,
I trust both ourselves and our
sector stakeholders that we will
increase both more production,
more domestic supply and higher
export rates. I hope that these
problems will be solved and we
will be able to trade more easily
and bring more foreign currency
to our country.
ZebSprings Sales & Marketing
Manager Mahmut Öztürk: There
is a supply-demand imbalance
in the iron and steel sector
The spring and iron and steel
sectors are also adversely affected
by the ongoing economic
recession process worldwide.
In our country, the spring production
sector for mattress and
furniture is export-oriented, as
in other mattress and furniture
component sectors. Currently,
the demand level in all foreign
markets, which are potential for
our country, is below expectations.
Manufacturers in our sector
are trying to compensate for this
contraction in demand with market
expansion efforts.
In the iron and steel sector, which
provides the basic raw material
input for the spring sector, there
is a similar supply-demand imbalance.
In addition to the restrictive
factors such as quotas in Europe
and “section 232” tax in the USA,
which continue in the main target
markets for the iron and steel
sector, the trade restrictions resulting
from the recent sad developments
in the Middle East have
further limited the foreign market
alternatives of iron and steel producers.
Simultaneously, China,
the world’s largest steel producer,
is pursuing an active policy in
its export markets, which poses
an additional challenge for the
Turkish steel industry.
Apart from the stagnant demand,
another important agenda of
the iron and steel sector is the
adaptation process to Europe’s
ongoing CCSM - Carbon Control
Mechanism at the Border. In this
context, sector players are both
analyzing the current situation
and continuing their process
improvement investments.
In terms of the spring sector, iron
and steel production in our country
is sufficient in terms of technical
and capacity. The spring
sector is able to supply the
steel grades required for spring
production from steel producers
in our country and does not
experience a shortage in supply
capacity. This situation provides
an important advantage for our
spring sector.
Transitioning to a circular
economy for mattresses
and textiles
The NBF (National Bed Federation) has created the single most
comprehensive library of studies on the life cycle of mattresses in the
UK by working with Oakdene Hollins since 2014. Oakdene Hollins
fourth bi-annual study on the fate of ‘end of life’ mattresses in the UK
provides analysis of waste dataflow, Prodcom data, industry and Local
Authority surveys, and interviews with the growing number of mattress
recyclers. In the eight years since first looking at the data, the number
of mattresses sent for recycling has more than doubled. But the absence
of an EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) programme makes it
highly unlikely that the NBF target of a 75% recycling rate by 2028 will be
achieved.
The 2022 End-of-Life mattress
report outlines the
reasons for the progress
made to date. Industry take-back
schemes and, local authorities
initiatives to divert mattress from
landfill for example. Despite this,
there are still challenges in the
‘real’ rate of recycling (the fate of
the mattresses or their components
and materials after sorting
and processing). Specifically,
the report solidifies the need for
action from wider stakeholders in
the mattress industry to increase
recycling particularly for fates
after sorting and processing. We
asked International Director David
Fitzsimons what he thought
about this issue and the potential
for improved circularity in the
mattress industry, he said “Recycling
rates of 70% and more
are achieved in jurisdictions that
operate an extended producer
responsibility (EPR) programme.
These are designed to push
about €10 per mattress into the
recycling and transport infrastructure.
Without EPR, recycling
will probably reach this level in
the UK in about 2050. This is
why industry is proposing to lead
an EPR programme and wants
Government to provide a regulatory
framework.”
Belgium, France and the Netherlands
operate an EPR scheme for
mattresses with Spain and Italy
drafting regulations for consultation
in 2024. They have demonstrated
how such schemes
ensure a steady supply of
materials, encouraging long-term
investments in local refurbishing,
recycling and PU foam recycling
plants which would create
more varied job opportunities
than landfill and energy recovery
processes.
The mattress industry has long
called for an EPR scheme to be
implemented in the UK to harmonise
an approach to mattresses
at their end-of-life. In the “2022
While the textile reuse sector
may not be the main driver for
change in the industry, it can still
contribute to reducing overconsumption.
By keeping products
in use for longer in the secondary
market, overconsumption can be
countered and the need for new
products reduced. To promote
circular behaviour, charitable donations
and various initiatives and
business models that encourage
reuse should be highlighted.
Whilst it is clear that there are
ongoing efforts to transform the
mattress and textiles industries
from a linear to a recycling econ-
End of Life Mattress Report” created
for NBF by Oakdene Hollins,
several crucial areas for improvement
have been identified. These
include enhancing the collection
process, refining the reprocessing
methods, creating new end
markets, and designing products
with end-of-life considerations in
mind as well as showing how an
EPR scheme could be beneficial
to support this.
Additionally, a similar need for
action to move away from landfill
and increase collection, can
be seen from that of the textile
industry. Oakdene Hollins has
recently collaborated on several
textile works including a report
for NACTR which offers factbased
direction for increasing
post-consumer textile waste
diversion from landfill across
Canada. There is still work to
be done in the textile industry to
move away from a linear economy.
The NACTR report finds that
there is an opportunity for recycling
and reuse. It is important
for all stakeholders to collaborate
and consider the impact of textile
reuse, recycling and End-of-Life
management (landfill, incineration
and export) as part of product life
cycle assessment.
omy, are there efforts towards a
circular economy? In short-yes.
As above there is an identified
potential for the circular economy
in textiles. Looking across the
NBF reports on mattresses which
Oakdene Hollins have been producing
since 2014 we can see
an evolution and shift in focus.
Early reports draw attention to
recycling efforts and recycling
targets however, newer reports
have evolved to look at recyclability
yields. You may ask why
this difference matters, former
Oakdene Hollins employee Peter
Lee explains more: “The circular
economy doesn’t focus just on
recyclability targets. There is a
greater drive towards recycled
content- this is much more powerful.
This makes us think, What
do we value? What impact can
my recycling output have on my
input? We must think resource,
not waste. This vision is forward
thinking in the way of reducing
virgin material and increasing resource
security. This vision gives
stability in the supply chain by
knowing that there is a demand
for an output.”
The development of sustainability
in the mattress and textiles sectors
which Oakdene Hollins have
supported is encouraging to see
but, we must continue to work
to evolve this towards a circular
economy. Oakdene Hollins is
well placed to help support those
in the furniture sector develop
sustainability strategies, to read
What is latex? How is it
used? What are its benefits?
Latex is a milky plant extract
found in nature, secreted by
many plants and solidified
when exposed to air. It is a milky
liquid is found in rubber plants
(Hevea brasiliensis) that are production
source of it and of which
scientific name is Asclepiadaceae
family. Latex is a complex liquid
composition and contains many
substances such as protein,
starch, alkaloid, sugar, oil, gum,
tannin, resin. In many plants
the latex is white in color, but in
some plants it can also be yellow,
orange or red.
The rubber tree, the main source
of latex, is a plant that grows in
tropical climates. The importance
of this tree in world trade is very
great. In order to obtain latex
from rubber trees, V-shaped cuts
are made on the trunks of the
trees when they are five or six
years old, and the milky liquid
called latex is collected in bowls.
The most productive ages of the
rubber tree are the trees between
7 and 12 years old, and more
efficiency is obtained from these
trees. The collection process is
not as simple as one might think.
Latex collectors try to collect
this milky liquid from night to
morning, since rubber tree yields
better at night.
What are the features of latex
mattress?
Making a list about the properties
of the latex mattress will provide
a better understanding of the
mattress. In this context;
• Latex mattresses have completely
natural ingredients and do
not contain any heavy or harsh
chemicals. Considering that
most of the human life is spent in
sleep, the importance of the bed
with natural features in terms of
health can be better understood.
Likewise, thanks to its natural
structure, it is environmentally
friendly and offers full hygiene in
terms of cleaning.
• Latex mattresses have a
long-lasting use thanks to the
durability of the material.
• It provides a very comfortable
sleep as it relieves the pressure
applied to the body.
• Thanks to its porous structure,
84 SleepTech • July - August

it prevents the deterioration of
the body’s heat balance during
sleep due to its high air permeability.
It provides a comfortable
and spacious sleep in terms of
heat.
• It has anti-allergic properties
so that people with allergies can
sleep comfortably.
• Harmful gas emission due to
use in mattresses is prevented
thanks to the structure of latex.
• By supporting the body in the
lying position, it allows people
who move a lot during sleep to
sleep comfortably in any position.
• Due to the structure of the bed,
it is not affected by the movement
of another person next to
the sleeping person, and can
continue to sleep comfortably.
• Latex material has a relaxing
and resting function on the muscle
structure. It is a healthy raw
material accepted in the world
because it is completely natural.
A mattress that is too hard or too
soft puts the spine in a different
position than it should be which
causes restless sleep and pain.
However, this negative situation
is not encountered in natural
latex mattresses and offers you
maximum comfort. But, thanks
to its high air permeability structure,
it will have the comfort
that will keep you refreshed and
away from bed bacteria for many
years.
Should a latex or visco mattress
be preferred?
• Visco and Latex materials,
which have the ability to distribute
pressure evenly, basically
differ in terms of production
methods and a few structural
features.
• Visco is a mattress that contains
chemicals, wraps the
body, and makes a feeling of
being buried a little more when
you lie down. While producing
the mattress, it is not all made
of visco material; sponges are
used under the visco to support
it. Because it is not possible to
sleep in completely visco material.
When you lie on your bed,
it slowly takes shape and then
regains its original form. Visco,
which is a sensitive material,
must be kept away from intense
watery environments. It is susceptible
to deformation when
exposed to water for a long time.
Density ratio may vary from bed
to bed. You should choose a
mattress that contains Visco at a
density suitable for your weight.
In addition, it is a type of bed that
is not recommended for heavy
sleepers, especially on the face.
Those who want to experience
the feeling of being buried while
sleeping and those who like a
soft mattress should prefer visco
mattresses.
• Latex is a completely natural
material. It supports the body
like Visco, fills your body cavities
when you lie down, but does not
wrap your body like Visco. It is
an orthopedic mattress as you
do not experience the feeling of
being buried when you lie down.
Since the reaction time (returning
to its shape) is fast compared to
the Visco mattress, it immediately
returns to its original state. It is
durable and suitable for longterm
use. It is a bed that can be
used very comfortably by people
of all weights.
Who should prefer a latex
mattress?
• If you turn left and right a lot
while sleeping, sleep on your side
and face, and especially if you
are a person who sweats a lot,
you should prefer latex mattresses.
• It is a suitable bed for couples
as it transmits less movement.
The impact of artificial
intelligence applications in
the textile industry
There is no doubt that today’s
technology has made our
lives much easier and at the
same time efficient. And people
use it to benefit themselves in various
ways, don’t they? The goal is
to achieve the optimal experience
with the right balance, and today’s
manufacturers know how important
it is to keep up with customer
demands. Smart fabrics and smart
clothing are emerging in the demand
for products such as fitness
trackers and wearable tech.
By M Shahbandeh Statista According
to a published study, the
worldwide textile market is expected
to grow from $1.5 trillion in
2020 to approximately $2.25 trillion
in 2025.
Increasing demand for quality
products has led the textile
industry to adopt automation and
artificial intelligence to minimize l
now discuss some applications of
AI to make the textile industry more
creative.
Yarn Manufacturing:
Production has been completely
transformed using AI in every
process from blowroom to carding,
drawing, lap forming, combing, fast
frame, ring spinning, winding, conditioning
and packaging. AI Based
control panels adjust all necessary
parameters of production with
minimal human intervention.
Not only did this speed up the
process, it also improved quality
and cost reduction. Yarn prediction
has also become more accurate
by calculating returns. The application
of AI reduced the error in yarn
grading prediction by up to 60%
and enabled better fabric grading.
AI made it easier to measure the
physical properties of a textile and
objectively classify fabric comfort.
Quality Control:
Quality control is traditionally carried
out by skilled workers through
physical inspection. This sector
has tremendous use of AI as it can
ensure uniformity and quality. Maximum
use is in yarn manufacturing
and apparel.
The use of the latest technology
and machinery such as AUTO-
BURST 70, TPI Tester, Digital
Moisture Meter, Digital Tachometer
CE and Stroboscope ensures the
highest
production quality. Instruments
such as Premier Art-2 are used to
test raw cotton properties such
as length strength MIC, color and
uniformity. The Uster Tester 6 is
a complete test center system to
measure and control the process
from combing to winding in terms
of roughness, defects and hairiness.
Fabric and Pattern Evaluation:
Artificial neural network (ANN)
technology is making it easier to
detect defects in patterns such as
weaving and knitting. An AI-enabled,
imaging-based inspection
can reduce human errors and
therefore increase productivity.
Cognex ViDi, for example, is an
example of an AI technology invented
by Cognex Corporation that
can automatically inspect fabric
modeling.
The inspection of fabric patterns
facilitated by AI speeds up production
by reducing pattern errors with
minimal workload and maximum
accuracy. AI can also be used for
the detection of fabric defects,
which in the past was performed
by workmanship by examining the
quality of each material individually.
Manual detection to speed up the
procedure with fewer infestations is
time consuming and difficult.
Color Management:
Data color was highly used for color
management, verifying that the
original color design matched the
color in the finished textile. Datacolor
claims to have developed an
artificial intelligence Pass/Fail (P/F)
feature to help
improve the accuracy and efficiency
of instrumental tolerance.
Datacolor proposes that the AI
feature takes into account historical
data of visual inspection results
from human operators while generating
tolerances that result in auxiliary
inspections that closely match
the visual inspection samples.
Datacolor’s AI P/F procedure
allegedly works as follows:
• The textile specialist visually
inspects all the batches produced
beforehand.
• Operators enter color measurements
and tolerances for all
batches in Datacolor software to
help train the AI P/F system.
• The AI P/F system can then be
tested for new batches to automatically
adjust AI tolerances
and train the system to determine
which samples pass and fail. In
the real world, this application can
benefit both textile manufacturers
and their customers to improve the
speed and accuracy of inspection
processes for color matching.
For example:
• The fabric is produced in several
batches, with each batch differing
slightly in terms of the actual
color achieved due to variables in
the dyeing process, such as the
amount of color added or differ-
File
ences in the color bond levels in
each batch (to the fabric).
• Samples from each batch can be
quality checked using Datacolor’s
platform to set a tolerance limit.
Samples that fall outside the tolerance
limit are rejected.
• The manufacturer’s human
inspectors are tasked with first entering
visual tolerance readings for
each batch (several hundred samples)
into the AI Pass/Fail attribute
to help determine which samples
can be considered good and which
samples should be rejected.
Fabric Grading:
In textile manufacturing, machine
learning has made it possible to
grade fabrics more
objectively and produce more consistent
results. AI takes advantage
of the fineness, strength
and fiber lengths of fabric fibers,
which can be precisely measured
using an artificial neural network.
An example of AI technology is the
smart eye, which can detect fabric
defects.
Pattern creation:
Pattern cutting and design making
is a fundamental process in the
textile business where materials
are cut according to the prescribed
design and various patterns are
created on the fabric. CAD is a
subset of AI that enables the production
of computerized patterns
where designers can create and
digitize the basic structure of the
patterns. CAD is used to cut patterns
where 3D pictures of fabrics
and concepts are provided, making
it easier to view.
Supply chain management and
merchandising
In textile industries, AI can be used
to automate shipping and packaging.
The supply chain plays a
crucial role in the smooth flow of
materials between retailers and
manufacturers. Supply chain management
requires large storage
areas, a well-equipped warehouse,
transportation and documentation.
AI can help automate shipping and
packaging for the textile industry
through robotics, RPA, machine
learning, etc. Merchandising can
use AI to a great extent in personalizing
customer experience, monitoring
consumer behavior, predicting
market trends, etc. AI-enabled
technologies such as NLP, virtual
help etc. help effective communication
between manufacturers,
production endpoints, retailers and
consumers.
Impact of Artificial Intelligence
on the Textile Industry
Trend identification
Given the rapidly changing fashion
trends, predicting fashion trends
is not only difficult but also a
time-consuming endeavor. Analysts
are supposed to spot the
next trend by manually studying
previously popular styles, trends on
social media and customer preferences.
Professionals may or may
not guess exactly what they are
doing.
Trained on data quality and quantity,
the AI tool analyzes previous
fashion data, assesses customer
requirements and preferences,
evaluates competitive movements
and identifies market trends.
AI technology provides accurate
details about trendy designs within
minutes of processing the data.
AI allows fashion firms to empower
their clothing companies
in minutes, often days and even
months, by monitoring the latest
fashion trends. Textile Engineers
working in R&D and P&D departments
should be able to follow the
trends in the world as closely as a
designer, make accurate analyzes
and produce products and prepare
presentations as a result of these
analyzes.
Machine aided design
AI tools can be analyzed and
intervening photographs can be
learned and hence an entirely new
fashion can be self-generated.
With the promise of AI in design
becoming a reality, numerous tech
giants are already making great
strides to incorporate the technology.
For example, an AI tool has
been developed on Amazon by a
group of professionals who can analyze
and understand photos and
create a whole new fashion design
on their own.
In addition, the Amazon business
giant has created another AI program
that analyzes and processes
fed images and thus concludes
whether a certain style is in fashion
or not. Not only Amazon, but hundreds
of other digital giants have
already embarked on AI adventures
and completely streamlined their
design processes. In collaboration
with Tommy Hilfiger and the Fashion
Institute of Technology (FIT),
IBM is using AI to support designers
to increase the speed of the
product development cycle.
Customer experience
While customers still grumble and
grumble about not getting timely
support or service, fashion companies
are under constant pressure to
provide what they demand almost
instantly. Thanks to this advanced
technology, fashion companies are
trying to bring personalization to
the forefront during buying trips.
From personalized ad notifications
to price drops, doubts or questions
with chatbots and personal styling.
Instant consumer offers can be
provided by AI and fashion brands
can realize their goal of enhancing
the customer experience.
are AI stylist applications on the
market that allow users to browse
When these photos are shown as
input, the software suggests the
most appropriate style according
to the type, complexity and preferences
of the user and respecting
the trends in fashion. As AI can
work as design assistants for
designers and personal stylists for
consumers, it’s pretty clear that the
technology impact is bigger than
we ever envisioned.
Activate New Apps
Just as fitness trackers can enable
their wearers to live a better and
more attentive lifestyle, smart
clothing combined with electrical
sensing technologies can do the
same. However, your clothes can
offer more forms of physiological
signal monitoring than a smartwatch
because you have more
interaction with your body than a
smartwatch.
Smart clothing could allow continuous
monitoring of critical
biometrics such as our heart rate.
With more practical long-term
surveillance, doctors can better
identify or diagnose possible heart
diseases. Smart clothing allows
patients to collect complete and
comprehensive cardiovascular
information, monitor long-term cardiovascular
diseases and enhance
cardiac detection and diagnosis
with regular long-term monitoring.
AI looks bright for the future of the
textile and apparel industry. AI can
increase productivity, help with
fiber identification, safer working
conditions, predict demand and
much more.
A Forbes article on the fashion
increase sales system efficiency
through intelligent automation, and
improve sales processes using predictive
role in reshaping and boosting
business growth and sustainable
fashion for the textile industry in
the next few years.
Natural Components
in a Mattress
Courtesy of Cozypure
Natural mattresses are one step ahead of other mattresses in
terms of health. Made of selected and organic materials, natural
mattresses stand out with their comfort and luxury features.
Only the finest organic
cotton, pure wool, and
non-syntheic natural
rubber is used in our handcrafted
organic mattresses and bedding
accessories. Natural organic fibers
breathe, producing a healthy
environment for rejuvination and
rest. Our high quality craftsmanship
produces a cozy sleep
system, while our natual, organic
materials incorporate the purity
your body craves while resting.
Together these two important
factors equal one thing: Cozy-
Pure Organic Bedding.
Cotton batting has been around
for centuries. It was the fiber of
choice generations ago, before
the introduction of cheap
chemical foams. This durable
fiber offers strength, durability
and support that lasts for years.
Foams break down, off-gas and
lose support over time. On the
96 SleepTech • July - August

other hand, natural fiber batting,
such as organic cotton, will
compress and get firmer. After a
few years, some people add pure
wool or rubber pillowtops for
added cushioning.
Natural “Green” Cotton - This
term can be quite confusing. We
found that many consumers think
this is organic! Actually, “Green”
Cotton is “natural” cotton --
conventionally grown (just like
standard cotton), however, it’s
not treated in the end-process.
Our mattresses and bedding
accessories are NOT made with
this cotton. We use only certified
organic cotton in our sleep
systems.
Certified Organic Cotton is the
absolute most pure form of cotton
available today. It contains no
pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers
during it’s cultivation and has
no added chemicals or preservatives
(such as formaldehyde)
in the processing. It’s a premium
cotton that’s pure and clean -
soft and beautiful.
Filling and upholstery. We use
only organic cotton for both!
Inside we hand-nest full batts of
organic cotton for it’s comfort
and strength, but we also encase
our organic mattresses (and all
our organic bedding) within a
soft, yet durable, certified organic
cotton woven damask (or sateen
or twill - depending on the
product). It’s essential to have
the outer shell made of organic
cotton since this is the first layer
to allow the inside of the bed to
“breathe” (that benefit would be
lost entirely in a mattress covered
with shiny synthetic material).
Pure Wool is found in the most
luxurious mattresses around the
world. Even the Queen of England’s
bed is crafted using natural
fibers - wool included! Using
wool in a sleep system makes
sense to our health. It wicks
away moisture, helps maintain
your body temperature, and acts
as a natural flame retardant. Its
bouyant springiness retains its
resiliency for a nesting comfort
that cradles your body and helps
relieve pressure point discomfort.
People who suffer from arthritis
and fibromyalgia prefer our wool
pillowtops to relieve aches. There
are so many benefits for using
CozyPure wool! Visit our Pure
Wool section to read more.
Allergy sufferers prefer CozyPure
natural bedding. We’ve said it
before and we’ll say it again...
Natural fibers breathe. Dust mites
thrive in a moist environment.
Our natural bedding fibers allow
perspiration to evaporate, which
keeps your sleep system dry
and clean. Synthetic bedding
soaks up nightly moisture (we
lose about a pint each night), and
of course the mites love those
conditions. Wool is essential as
the first layer beneath the mattress
covering, as the wool will
wick away the perspiration. In
addition to pure wool, natural
rubber is also a wonderful choice
because its naturally resistant
to dust mites, as well as molds
and mildews. Our most popular
mattress for allergy sufferers is a
rubber mattress core wrapped in
wool with a quilted organic cotton
cover ticking. Some people
add a wool pillowtop for extra
cushioning.
Natural Latex Rubber. We use
natural latex rubber which is
dense and supportive, yet gently
yielding to the body with it’s
dynamic contouring ability. Unlike
memory foam which is derived
from plastics, it doesn’t off-gas
toxic chemicals, nor does it
have that heavy, “dead” feeling.
Naturally resistant to moisture,
dust, mold, mildew and bacteria,
CozyPure natural rubber is an
excellent choice for people with
allergies. We don’t use fillers in
our rubber, and we don’t glue
pieces together to create the
core, which is approximately six
inches. Unfortunately, manufacturers
and retailers can claim
their latex rubber mattresses are
FAQ’s about this great natural
Chemical Sensitivities. Many
people who suffer from MCS
(Multiple Chemical Sensitivities)
find they can tolerate bedding
made from natural and organically-grown
materials. We are
not medical practitioners, so
unfortunately we can’t guarantee
our products to “heal and cure”
MCS, however, over the past
ten years we have developed a
strong following within the MCS
circles. We always recommend
that anyone with high sensitivities
purchase a travel pillow with the
ingredients they wish to test. If
you can tolerate sleeping on the
pillow (right there next to your
face), then chances are very
good that a mattress constructed
with the same materials will
work well. Alternatively, you can
request an “Organic Bedding Kit”
with small sample size swatches
of our materials.
No nasty PBDE’s. Unless the
manufacturer has the ability to
craft the mattress using wool to
pass the fire code tests (which
we do), all mattresses must be
SleepTech • July - August
File
treated with PBDE fire retardants
by federal law. California recently
passed a new code in 2005
which requires more than two
pounds of PBDE’s for a standard
queen mattress. Everyday we
hear more research and studies
showing the dangers of PBDE’s
and their links to cancer, the
nervous system and breathing
problems. In Europe, PBDE’s
have been banned, yet in America
we continue to use more. Why
can’t we embrace more European
values and use nature’s
materials to promote health and
wellness? More than likely it’s the
higher costs involved to produce
a luxury “old world” mattress.
Too many big-brand companies
cut corners for big profits, filling
mattresses the size of mountains
with low quality foam and covered
in shiny fabrics. We realize
that a CozyPure mattress may
cost a little more, but it really
does come down to the fact
that you get what you pay for:
Quality, Comfort, and Materials.
You spend 1/3 of your lifetime
sleeping on your mattress. That’s
a LOT of time. We believe it
should be a pleasurable, safe
and healthy experience... that’s
why we created CozyPure natural
bedding.
Eco-Friendly Natural materials
are renewable and sustainable so
we don’t deplete our resources.
They’re also biodegradable and
have natural enzymes that allow
the natural fibers to breakdown.
According to “Microbial processes
in the degradation of fibers”,
by P.M. Fedorak, University of
Alberta: Natural fibers like wool
and cotton are broken down
through biotic process. Microorganisms
have evolved enzymes
that attack key bonds in these
natural polymers, thereby releasing
monomers that can be used
as carbon and energy sources
for microbial growth. In contrast,
microorganisms lack enzymes to
break down many synthetic fibers,
thus these materials persist
and accumulate in the environment.
development and international
recognition of the sector in our
country.
IBIA, which was formed by the
important supplier companies of
the mattress production sector,
which has a volume of 40 billion
dollars in the world, has become
an important power in the sector
after its establishment in 2021.
IBIA, which was established
under the leadership of Osman
of Directors of Elektroteks, with
the aim of bringing together the
mattress sub-industry sector,
which appeals to approximately
102 SleepTech • July - August

150 countries with a production
volume of 3 billion dollars and
an employment of 25 thousand
people in our country, under
the same roof, IBIA, which was
established with the gathering of
22 large and qualified manufacturers
of the sector, managed to
increase the number of members
and to sign sound organisations
in a short time.
IBIA, which aims to promote the
mattress sub-industry sector
worldwide, increase the competitiveness
of companies in the
sector and strengthen sectoral
co-operation, aims to make Turkey
the world leader in mattress
production and to become the
most important international
meeting point of the sector. In
line with this vision, the association
supports its members to
grow in line with innovation and
technological developments.
Having more than 150 members
operating in various sectors such
as mattress production, mattress
sub-industry, textile, machinery
production, logistics, IBIA’s
wide range of members plays
an important role in encouraging
sectoral collaborations and
innovation. The members of the
association ensure diversity and
growth in the sector by doing
important business both in the
domestic market and in the international
arena.
IBIA EXPO gains international
status
Underlining that they shape the
sector with the projects they have
implemented and the events they
regularly organise, Osman Güler
said the following about IBIA
EXPO, one of the most important
projects of the association: “The
fair, which we organised for the
first time in 2022, attracted great
national and international attention.
After the successful first
fair, we held the 2nd IBIA EXPO
in 2023 with the participation of
more than 300 companies on
an area of 20 thousand square
metres and hosted more than 35
thousand visitors from more than
100 countries.”
Pointing out that IBIA EXPO offers
great opportunities for companies
in the sector to take part
in global markets as well as reinforcing
Turkey’s leadership in this
field, Osman Güler said, “Our fair,
the third of which will be held in
and further strengthen our industry
in the international arena. Our
fair will also be supported by a
sectoral buyer delegation programme
under the auspices of
the Ministry of Trade.”
Target 3 Billion Dollars Export
Emphasising that Turkey is an
important player in the mattress
sub-industry sector worldwide
and is among the countries that
produce the most mattresses
after China, Güler stated that the
economic recession experienced
in global markets in 2023 also
affected them. Güler added that
despite all these negativities,
Turkey is in a better situation than
the world in general. Stating that
104 SleepTech • July - August

they observed a 35 percent decline
in their sector compared to
the pandemic period, Güler said,
“We wanted to overcome this
decline with a smoother transition
with the fair we organised and we
saw the benefits of this. By the
end of 2024, we aim to increase
our exports to 3 billion dollars.
For this, we aim to open up to
new export markets, strengthen
our position in our existing
markets and increase our added
value through R&D studies.”
At the 2nd Ordinary General Assembly
held at the beginning of
2024, founding President Osman
Güler was unanimously elected
as the Chairman of the Board of
Directors for another term. Güler
emphasised that they have created
important awareness since
the establishment of IBIA and
that they will continue to work for
the development of the sector.
Stating that IBIA members make
great contributions to the Turkish
economy, President Osman Güler
said that they aim to increase the
annual exports of the member
companies of the association,
which is over 2 billion dollars in
total, to 3 billion dollars by the
end of 2024.
the role of the IBIA Expo fair in
the industry, and the production
volume of the sectors in the
bedding industry with the participants.
We have shared some
important points from the presentation
with you.
How and when was the IBIA
Association founded?
The International Bedding
Industry Association, abbreviated
as IBIA, is an association
formed by industrialists who
provide technology, service, and
components to bedding manufacturers.
Founded in 2021, this
association has 141 members
and 25 thousand employees. As
of today, the sector exports 2.4
billion dollars of its volume with a
volume of 3 billion dollars.
Some may ask why our association
has the phrase international
in its name. We did not want to
limit the establishment of this association
to only Turkish industrialists.
We wanted to give all companies
that appeal to the sector
the opportunity to take part in
the association. We thought that
by working together, we would
increase the power of the sector
and create a healthier and more
comfortable sleep world. And
we invite all our sector representatives
to walk together on this
path.
We designed our association by
dividing it into 10 different service
groups that appeal to the sector
such as machinery, fabric,
sponge, spring, other layers,
complementary products, chemistry,
sleep products and foreign
trade.
IBIA’s founding purposes
In this period when people’s living
standards are increasing, the
layers of the bed that constitutes
the bed we spend one third of
our lives on;
•To encourage production with
products that do not harm human
health,
•To conduct studies on layers
that will increase sleep comfort,
•To produce layers that will minimize
fire risk,
•To supply higher quality and
healthier products,
•To conduct studies on the development
of standards that will
increase bed quality,
•To assist bed manufacturers
in manufacturing in accordance
with these standards,
•The aim of this partnership is
to facilitate supply processes by
gathering the supply chain for
bed manufacturers under a single
roof,
•To minimize the human factor
in bed production in order to
produce beds that comply with
quality and international standards,
•To create dark production facilities
by developing robotic bed
production facilities with industry
4.0 technology in bed production
by developing technological
studies.
We would be happy to conduct
these issues not only with indus-
trialists within IBIA, but also with
all associations and federations
serving the sector and including
bed manufacturers, in mutual
cooperation, benefiting from each
other’s experiences. Within this
framework, we are open to all
collaborations and would be happy
to lay the foundations of these
collaborations.
Performances of IBIA Expo 2022
and 2023 fairs
Our IBIA Expo Association organizes
an international fair organization
called IBIA Expo, where
bed manufacturers can have the
opportunity to meet with many
suppliers and is completely organized
by the association, without
any commercial purpose. We can
say that we made history at the
IBIA Expo fair, which we held for
the first time in 2022. Although
it was the first, we hosted more
than 22,400 visitors from 91
countries and 320 cities. At IBIA
Expo 2023, we brought together
19,000 domestic and foreign
buyers from 97 countries with the
participation of more than 140
companies and more than 300
leading brands.
The importance of Brazil in the
global bed industry
According to some world statistics,
Brazil is among the top
five countries in the world in bed
production. Since our association
members also provide technology
and components to the sector,
BRAZIL bed manufacturers
are naturally among our target
countries. On this occasion, we
invite mattress manufacturers
to IBIA Expo, which will be held
between 25-28 September 2024,
where they can find all mattress
components and high-tech machines
in one place, with quality
and attractive prices.
