MP levy request moves forward
Sale ends Aug. 31st
*while supplies last
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
In a special meeting on July 29, the Madison-Plains
school board unanimously
passed the second resolution
needed to place a bond issue
and tax levy on the Nov. 5 ballot
for construction and maintenance
of a new building for students
in kindergarten through
eighth grade.
The two-part levy will appear
on the ballot as one combined
issue.
“Voters will see one item to
vote on on the ballot,” said Superintendent
Chad Eisler.
The total request is 4.3 mills.
Part of that request is a 3.8-mill
property tax to cover the construction,
along with an allowance
to abate and demolish
the existing intermediate school and pay for site improvements,
furniture, utilities, and equipment. The
other part is a 0.5-mill levy to maintain the building
once it is built. The levy term is 37 years. The total annual
cost to the taxpayer would be $151 per $100,000 of
appraised property value.
The estimated cost to build a new K-8 building is
$56,430,525. If passed, the construction portion of the
levy would raise $38,875,296. The Ohio Facilities Construction
Commission would contribute an estimated
$6,555,229 to the project, and the school district would
contribute $11 million to the project. The maintenance
portion of the levy would raise an estimated $233,000
per year. The building would be constructed on the Linson
Road campus.
The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 5 election
is Oct. 7. For more information, contact the Madison
County Board of Elections at (740) 852-9424. Office
hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
John Andrix named Homecoming grand marshal
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Organizers of the Lilly Chapel
Methodist Church Homecoming,
set for Aug. 17, have named John
Andrix as this year’s parade
grand marshal. John’s service in
the position also will honor the
memory of his mother, Mary Andrix,
who passed away in 2022.
Mary was born in Lilly Chapel
and was a lifelong member of the
church. The same goes for John.
They both lent their support to
the church in various ways over
the years, including championing
the construction of an addition to
the church that was completed
last year.
“They have always been very
supportive and were instrumental
in getting the addition built,”
said Connie Ballah, a church
member and one of the
Homecoming organizers.
John said he and his
mother were happy to support
the building project.
“It provides a facility
that hopefully will attract
more members to the
church and provides in the
small village of Lilly Chapel
a focal point where people
can come and get together
in good times, like wedding
receptions, and in hard
times, like when there is a
death in the family and
people come together for a
meal after services. It benefits
the church and the
community,” he said.
John Andrix (left) will preside as grand marshal in the Lilly Chapel About his mother, John
Homecoming parade on Aug. 17. His service as grand marshal also said she was an artist and
will honor the memory of his mother, Mary (right), who passed away an avid card player. She
in 2022.
served in the U.S. Navy
during World War II and worked for
Lazarus, selling sewing machines and giving
sewing lessons. She also belonged to the
Coover Club and Madison County Senior
Citizens.
“She lived to be 99. She was active until
the last 10 days of her life,” John said. “She
had a great life. She was sharp as a tack.”
John grew up on the family farm and
graduated from The Plains in 1965. He went
on to earn a degree in international studies
at The Ohio State University in 1969. He received
a commission in the U.S. Army
where he served as a second lieutenant from
1970 to 1972, primarily at Fort Carson, Colorado.
He owned Andrix & Co., a property
casualty insurance company, for 40 years
and is now retired.
John lives part of the year in Florida but
almost always makes it back to Lilly Chapel
for the Homecoming. He said his favorite aspects
of the celebration are the food, the parade,
and seeing people he has known for
years.
The 40th Annual Lilly Chapel Methodist
Church Homecoming will take place Aug. 17
at the church, 8530 Lilly Chapel
Georgesville Rd., London. The day starts
with the parade at 11 a.m., featuring the
Madison-Plains High School band. A kiddie
music by the Ladies of Longford from 2:15
from 4:15 to 5:45 p.m., and a live auction at
