The turbulence in world markets is undeniable, with economic
forecasts fluctuating as rapidly as the headlines. Yet, amid this fragility,
our industry remains a steadfast pillar of the economy, driving
exports and fostering international partnerships. We are acutely
aware of the delicate balance we must maintain, navigating these
uncertain waters while ensuring our growth and success.
Our participation in Intertextile Shanghai is a perfect example of
our proactive approach. At this premier event, we will not only
showcase the latest in Turkish home textiles but also distribute
complimentary copies of this very issue, reinforcing our global
presence and commitment to the industry. Following Shanghai, our
journey continues to Moscow for the Hometextile Design fair, where
we aim to strengthen our ties with the Russian market and beyond.
These events are more than just opportunities to display our
products; they are platforms for dialogue, collaboration, and the
exchange of ideas. They allow us to connect with our international
counterparts, share our experiences, and learn from one another.
As we continue to navigate these challenging times, we do so with
a sense of purpose and determination. The Turkish home textile
industry is not merely surviving; it is thriving, adapting, and pushing
forward with renewed vigor. We invite you to join us on this journey,
to witness firsthand the resilience and innovation that define
Expo Center. Created with the main mission
of turning Turkish products into brands that
everyone wants to own with original, innovative
and aesthetic designs, FDI also draws
attention with its strong design committee
and advisory board. MOSFED President
Ahmet Güleç said that Turkey needs organizations
like FDI that are positioned correctly
and have a clear target and mission, and answered
our questions about the fair and the
sector.
First of all, what is the purpose of
this fair?
We have been successfully organizing the
Furniture Fair, one of the biggest fairs in
Turkey, for years. However, three concepts
we have neglected for a while: Design, innovation
and sustainability. We need to
strengthen these muscles. We are especially
looking for the answer to the question of
how design can be the new story. Therefore,
designers need to know the business world
better and the business world needs to know
designers better. This is how FDI emerged
and we will organize the first one this year.
The main purpose of our fair is “Designer
to Business”, that is to bring designers and
manufacturers together. There will be many
events related to this subject. We want the
first year of the fair to be modest. Then, over
the years, this fair will grow and design will
be talked about in Istanbul.
What will the coming together of
designers and producers bring to
both sides?
When a designer creates an original product,
it should not only remain on paper. It should
also come to light in practice. Therefore, designers
and manufacturers will share their
experiences with each other and discuss
how products can be designed more suitable
for production. We thought that both
sides needed a platform to carry out these
studies and that’s why we planned the fair.
There will be special areas for both design
companies and designers at the fair. We will
not accept those who do not already have
original designs.
Will designers from abroad also
come to the fair?
Of course, this business should have an in-

ternational dimension. We are especially in
contact with the foreign press. Next year we
are thinking of creating country pavilions in
different countries. But first we want to see
our local strength and show it to the outside
world. Because those who are not strong
locally cannot be strong in the international
arena.
What are the export targets of
the furniture sector for 2024 and
beyond?
The furniture sector has been the sector that
has increased its exports the most in the
last 20 years. A sector that is almost never
in the rankings today has an export capacity
of 5 billion dollars. In 2024, we think that
these figures will continue. However, we do
not expect much growth this year due to
the fluctuations in the exchange rate and inflation
figures. With 2025, we have a 20%
growth target in exports. In 2028, our target
is $ 12 billion in furniture exports. The most
effective thing in this will be with value-added
products and products whose design belongs
to us.
So how do you plan to develop valueadded
exports?
We still have dynamism. We have the power
to close the gap with other countries. The
reason for this difference is that we have neglected
value-added production. Sustainable
value-added exports come from creating
value. The furniture industry’s ability to create
value and brands to gain identity will be
entirely through design. Without design, the
furniture sector means nothing. We currently
have over 45,000 manufacturers and more
than half of them export. Direct exports reveal
the dynamism of the furniture sector.
This means that companies can create value
and everyone, from small to large, is working
hard to export.
We have become a country that knows how
to produce for the world. If we can export to
Africa, Japan and America, this is a great success
for us. Producing for so many different
countries and cultures requires experience.
We act with the idea of “Think globally, act
locally”. We are a sector that recognizes all
cultures in the world and develops projects
for them. This is our biggest strength.
Where Past Meets Future: Alcova
Milano Curates Heimtextil Trends
25/26 for the First Time
Heimtextil has launched a new collaboration
with the visionary team behind Alcova.
Known as a must-visit event during Milan
Design Week, Alcova’s exhibitions spotlight independent
designers and transform historical venues
into dynamic spaces for cutting-edge design.
Founded by curator and creative director Valentina
Ciuffi and architect Joseph Grima, Alcova has built
a reputation for revitalizing forgotten locations—
whether an old bakery, an abandoned cashmere
factory, or a former military hospital—and turning
them into vibrant exhibition spaces that foster
dialogue among those shaping modern design
culture. Since its inception in 2018, Alcova has
demonstrated how traditional elements can seamlessly
merge with contemporary design, generating
new and thought-provoking narratives.
“The partnership between Heimtextil and Alcova
promises to push boundaries and set new trends
in the textile world. Together with Valentina Ciuffi,
Joseph Grima, and their international, interdisciplinary
network of experts, we are further developing
the forward-looking character of Heimtextil
Trends. With Alcova’s dynamic and contemporary
approach, we aim not only to recognize global
changes and trends in the textile industry but also
to explore how these trends are perceived and
utilized. We invite visitors to reassess the cultural
and material significance of textiles. Exhibitors will
have the opportunity to participate in the Trend
Preview and receive the Trend Booklet in advance,”
says Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles
& Textile Technologies.
Past Meets Future: The
Transformation of Historical Trends
Under the theme “Future Continuous,” Heimtextil
Trends 25/26 will explore the ongoing process
of renewing and transforming past trends. These
rediscoveries are more than just nostalgic looks
back; they serve as inspiration to shape a new future.
As the title suggests, language plays a crucial role
in the trend research for Heimtextil Trends 25/26.
“Language helps us understand trends by describing
how they evolve over time. It enables us to
analyze the significance of trends and predict their
future impact,” explain Valentina Ciuffi and Joseph
Grima. “Language is therefore a key tool for understanding
and communicating the complexity and
progression of future developments.”
The deliberate use of language guides the development
of Heimtextil Trends 25/26, with designers,
textile researchers, and industry representatives
from Alcova’s network sharing their insights in interviews.
These conversations explore the textile
industry from various perspectives—politics, history,
data ethics, and sustainable agriculture—highlighting
textiles as key agents of change within our
global and ecological challenges. This exploration
of the past and future of textiles forms the basis
for Alcova’s color selection, with each hue representing
a deeper emotional and cultural narrative.
In the ‘Trend Arena’ in Hall 3.0, visitors will experience
an extraordinary showcase where Alcova
connects the past and future of the textile industry.
Historic textile trends are revisited and revitalized
to inspire future developments. Heimtextil Trends
25/26 will be a central highlight, serving as a hub
for innovative practices that challenge established
views and open new perspectives on textiles.
Full details of “Future Continuous” will be unveiled
at the Trend Preview on 12 September 2024.
