Let’s Talk

For those who know me, July and
August are hard months. Things don’t
get done in a timely manner. Everything
in my life gets put on the back burner
because it’s Mississippi State student
move out and move in. My J.O.B. is
property management. I am a real
estate agent and bookkeeper for a
property management company in
Starkville, MS. Our office is thankful for
the students who move out early since
we have only a matter of 2 weeks to
turn about 100 houses or more than
200 bedrooms and bathrooms. It’s hard
work and takes a lot of man power and
hours to get it all done so that on move
in day, those students are walking into
as clean as possible, well maintained
houses. After that, we have to send
deposits to those who will get money
back. Another week and a half of focus
as I get only things done that must be
accomplished. We long for Labor Day
weekend. Needless to say, everything in
my life gets put on hold.
This year, we planted a little garden of
peas, corn, and melons. We planted late
so I was hoping that the harvest would
come in after my turnover but sure

enough, it started coming in the week
turnover started. One thing that can’t
be put off is the harvest. That is
unless you want to lose it all. I’ve had
to come home in the evenings and
put up peas. You are talking about
one tired cookie!
Galatians 6:9 comes to my mind. “Let
us not grow weary or become
discouraged in doing good, for at the
proper time we will reap, if we do not
give in.” I was reading an article by
Terri Savelle Foy and in it she said
“The harvest you receive today is a
direct result of the seeds you’ve
sown up to now.”
Galatians 6:7 says, “A man’s harvest
in life depends entirely upon the
seeds he sows.”
There are a few things I want to bring
out about harvest and this is Amy
101. I’m no scholar. Just a child of
God who tries to do my best each
day.
Matthew 9:36-38 “When He saw the
crowds. He was moved with

compassion and pity for them,
because they were dispirited and
distressed, like sheep without a shepherd.
Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest
is [indeed] plentiful, but the workers are
few. So pray to the Lord of the harvest to
send out workers into His harvest.”
1. The harvest doesn’t wait on you until
you’re ready. You can’t put off the
harvest. You have to already be ready
to do what needs to be done whether
that is open your mouth and speak life
or shut your mouth and pray. This
world is dying and the workers are
few. Be the worker God needs in this
world today.
2. The harvest is a direct result of the
seeds you’ve sown. With our mouths
we can sow seeds of discord or life.
We have a harvest around us whether
that is friends, family, or someone
we’ve just met. They need positive.
They are looking for truth. Be the
light..
3. Always be about the Father’s work. We
live in a world where we have to work
to make a living. Something I’m always
reminding myself of is “Work to live.
Don’t live to work.” People need you
and you can’t be there if you’re all
used up.
There are people in this world who
need you and who want you to be a
part of their life. Social media has
made it so easy to have a relationship
from a distance, but you can’t do
that. God loves fellowship. Get into
a Bible believing church. Get into
God’s Word. Be the light. Reach the
harvest.

Reflections from Mayberry
“Teach Them Well!”
A
s we were traveling back from
Mississippi from a singing engagement an
alert came over my phone that because of a
bad storm we needed to take an alternate
route. I told Greg we had better stop and fill
up with gas not knowing how we would be
rerouted. In the mean time, Ben had heard
the storm warnings and he started to pray.
His exact prayer was “ Dear Lord please let
the storm pass by.” We stopped, got our
tank filled up, used the restroom and
returned to the van. To our surprise when
we got back to the van, ready to take the
alternate route the GPS had returned us to
the original route. We traveled on and there
was absolutely no sign of a storm. After
another hour or so of travel we started
seeing storm clouds that were looking very
angry. Ben noticed the approaching storm
and once again started praying. Greg and I
watched the clouds start scattering after Ben
prayed.
I have always believed that God hears the
prayers of His children and especially of His
special children. It blessed mine and Greg’s
heart to see Ben do what he had seen and
heard us do so many times. Sometimes we
as adults ask God to do things for us and
answer our prayers but do we believe
beyond the shadow of a doubt that prayer

will be answered? All of us need to be
more like Ben and pray expecting and
knowing He will answer. There was not one
doubt in Ben’s mind when he prayed those
prayers that they would not be answered.
We know that death is certain and Greg
and I will not always be able to be here with
Ben, but there was such a peace that came
over our hearts to know that Ben knows
who to turn to and that prayer is the
answer!
Do you know that today? Oh that all of us
could have that child like faith like Ben
does. Praising the Lord that Ben has a
friend who will care for him and answer his
prayers even when Mama and Daddy are
no longer here. Most of all we are SO
thankful that Ben knows who to turn to
knowing that HE will answer his prayers
and supply his every need.

Train up a child in the way that he should
go and when he is old he will not depart
from it.

friend and I can say that when He’s all
you have, Jesus is all you need.

I have 3 step sons and a step daughter
that keep me plenty busy. I am also
extremely Active in my home church,
Maranatha Baptist Church, where my
wife serves as choir director.
There are several people I look up
to...one being my father. I can remember
he and my uncles singing in a group for
25+ years and that’s where I fell in love
with gospel music. Another mentor of
mine is Bob Morris. I always know I can
count on him for prayer and sound
advice when it comes to music and
ministry. Some of my favorite groups are
Gold City, Mark Tramell, The Perrys, and
The PromisedLand Quartet.

Chris Freeman
celebrates 50 years
in Gospel Music
J une 26, 2024 - Nashville, TN - Chris
Freeman marks a significant milestone,
celebrating her 50th year in gospel music.
Her journey began in 1974 when she
joined The Hinsons at the age of 17,
quickly becoming a beloved figure in the
Southern Gospel community. The
Hinsons, who were inducted into the
Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2006, were
just the beginning of Chris’s illustrious
career.
To commemorate this achievement,
Chris’s 2016 album “ The Hinson Side of
Me”, which is her only solo work, has
been made available on streaming
platforms via Symphonic. Distribution.
This album is a heartfelt tributer to her
roots and showcases her powerful voice
and deep connection to gospel music.
In 1980, Chris married Darrell
Freeman of the Pathways, and by 1983,
they formed The Freemans. The family
moved to hendersonville, TN, and for
over four decades, The Freemans,
including their children, Misty and Caylon,
and cousin Joe Freeman, have been a
driving force in gospel music. They have
released over twenty - five albums and
achieved numerous number on hits on
the Singing News charts, solidifying their
place in gospel music history.
Chris Freeman’s 50-year journey in
gospel music is a testament to her
dedication, talent, and the profound
impact she has had on the genre. Her
legacy continues to inspire and uplift
audiences around the world.
Throughout her career, Chris Freeman,
originally known as Chris Hawkins, has
been recognized for her exceptional
talent. She earned the title of Queen of
Gospel Music in both 1976 and 1977 and
received multiple Singing News Fan
Awards for Favorite Alto. Her
contributions to gospel music have left an
indelible mark on the genre.

John 8:31-32 says, “If you hold to
my teaching, you are really my
disciples. Then you will know the
truth and the truth will set you
free.” Jesus is the truth; real
freedom is eternal life. Only Jesus
can free us from the bondage of sin
and lead us into the freedom of
eternal life with Him. “So if the Son
sets you free, you will be free
indeed” (John 8:36).

Jesus does not give us freedom to
do as we wish while present on
Earth but the freedom to follow
God’s will. As we seek God’s
perfect will for our lives, His perfect
truth frees us of our own selfdeceptions
as well as Satan’s evil
devices. Having a relationship with
Jesus is freedom!

Joey Thurmond
J Recently, Joey released his first
single and music video, a heartfelt
cover of the classic hit "Welcome to
My World". This song holds a special
place in Joey's heart, as it makes him
imagine God singing that song to us.
The overwhelming success of his
version of the song has opened doors
for him to be able to begin recording
what will eventually be three albums.
Artist Spotlight
oey Thrumond, a lifelong
resident of New Hope, GA, has always
been captivated by the world of
performance. His journey began in
his childhood, where he found
inspiration in the joy and
entertainment that performers
brought to those around him.
Watching his parents and
grandparents light up during
performances, Joey knew from a
young age that he wanted to be the
person who could uplift others
through his talents.
Growing up in a Church
environment, Joey sang in the choir
alongside friends and family, however
it wasn't until later in life that he truly
explored his musical abilities. A
significant moment in his journey was
the opportunity to sing for Jack
Green. Although career and other
commitments prevented Joey from
pursuing the opporunity, the
experience alone was a thrill to him.

Joey extends a heartfelt gratitude
to Charlie Sexton for the wonderful
opportunity afforded him to be the
featured comedian on the awardwinning
television series "The Red
Back Revival Sing Along Show.
Through that experience, it has
allowed him to showcase his
comedic talents to a wider audience
and also be featured as a singer on
several gospel television and radio
shows and podcasts.
Joey’s story is one of dedication,
passion, and an unwavering desire to
bring joy to others through his
performances. His journey continues
to inspire those around him. As Joey
continues to move forward, his
mission to uplift and entertain remains
at the heart of everything he does,
touching the lives of many.

Reflections from
Mayberry

A
s most of you know I was brought
up singing Gospel music. At the young
age of three, I started singing with my
family. It is something I love and am
called to do. The world of gospel music
changed drastically this past month
when we lost Kelly and Jason Clark and
Amber Nelon Kistler. I can’t even begin
to imagine the terrible loss that Autumn
Nelon Streetman and Todd Nelon are
feeling along with the rest of the
families who lost precious loved ones
in the tragic plane crash. I ask that you
say a prayer for each of the families
who are grieving this terrible loss.
I am comforted in knowing when they
took their last breath down here they
were immediately in the presence of the
Savior they had sang about all their
lives and the many loved ones who had
gone on before them.
Kelly and I became friends in the late
70’s and remained friends down
through the years. Every time they
would travel to NC to sing if we weren’t
singing we went to hear them. They
always encouraged us and we them.
Ben grew up loving them as I did and
they always encouraged Ben and took
time to make him feel special.
An old song we used to sing has
come to mind SO many times over the
past two weeks. The song “Unfinished
Task” talks about not leaving things
unsaid or undone.
We live in a rushed, hurried world and
I’m afraid many times we do not take
the extra time to slow down to say or do
some things that we may need too.
Take the time, make the call, mail the
card, send the text, say I love you and
share Jesus every opportunity that God
gives you! You never know when it
might be your last chance.
You are so loved and SO missed Kelly,
Jason, Amber and Nate! Thankful and
grateful for your friendship and love
through the years! Christians NEVER
say goodbye just see you in a little
while.
