Bodycams deployed to ensure staff safety

PARKING WARDENS are 

being equipped with bodycams 

to record threatening behaviour 

towards them. 

The wardens along with other 

council staff out in the field have 

been wearing the cameras for 

the last month and have already 

caught two incidents on video. 

In one case a parking warden 

was threatened while issuing 

tickets. The second was a park 

and reserves officer being 

threatened. Both incidents were 

referred to the police. 

Council health and safety lead 

Wayne Stack said the introduction 

of cameras had been “a long 

time coming”. 

“The initiative is seen as 

improving personal safety for 

staff operating in the field and

considering using them. 

Former police officer and 

Rolleston Ward councillor Phil 

Dean said the council’s move to 

protect its staff was a sign of the 

times. 

“The bodycam gives them a 

good way of improving their 

safety but also if there are any 

complaints later then we have 

the footage,” he said.

A WINDOW cleaner heading to 

a job walked away from his car 

relatively unscathed after it 

hit black ice, jumped over a 

fence and a water race and 

rolled several times. 

The crash on Wards Rd 

near Darfield was one of at 

least three crashes caused 

by black ice last week. 

The window cleaner’s 

employer Andrew Love, 

said his staffer was lucky to 

escape with only muscle tears. 

“The back end stepped out and 

slid and as it has come off the road

top of the fence, over the top of 

the water race and stopped upside 

down in the paddock,” Love said. 

“I was surprised by how 

strong the car is, it’s a 

2007 Toyota Corolla. Even 

though it was smashed

fine.” 

Love arrived about an 

hour after the 7.30am 

crash last Tuesday. He said 

the ice was “horrendous’’. 

Love said the car had rolled 

about 40m before stopping.

said the car had tipped on its 

side in a ditch with the person 

requiring extraction 

Said Walker: “It’s all about 

driving to the conditions and 

being careful of shady patches.”

Revellers who hired sports club 

bus urinated in front of 3-year-old

A PREBBLETON woman is 

appalled a group which hired 

the champion Linwood Rugby 

Club’s bus urinated on a fence 

in front of herself and her threeyear-old 

grandson. 

But well-known restauranteur 

Nick Inkster, a member of the 

club who hires out the bus, said 

it didn’t involve club members or 

players. 

The woman said the incident 

happened near her home on 

Monday, July 29 in the empty 

section next to the Prebbleton 

Village Tavern. 

As she was putting her bins 

out with her grandson about 

2.40pm, she saw about eight men 

she said were intoxicated leave 

the bus and urinate on the fence 

of the section. 

“I think it’s shocking. I mean 

fair enough to have a great time, 

but have someone in charge so 

that sort of thing doesn’t happen,” 

she said. 

The Linwood Bulls bus was 

bought four years ago and has 

become a key piece of the rugby 

club’s identity.

for. It was booked under an 

individual’s name. 

But he said it was not connected 

to any celebrations of Linwood’s 

victory in the Canterbury 

Metro Premier rugby final the 

day before.

University of Canterbury 39-32 

to claim the title for the first time 

since 1973. 

“The bus had been booked 

out for months for that day and 

we didn’t know we were going 

to be in the final that weekend,” 

said Inkster. 

He usually drives the bus 

when it is booked out, but was 

unavailable on the day of the 

incident. 

He said the club will not be following 

up on the incident. 

“When you do hire it out and 

its got your name all over it, it’s 

kind of just the risk you take, if 

someone does something stupid, 

but so far in four years we’ve had 

good people.” 

The woman said she called 

out: “Come on guys, there’s kids 

here.” 

She said one of the men urinating 

responded: “What do expect 

me to do, piss myself.” 

The woman didn’t want to escalate 

the situation so she didn’t 

say anything back. 

“They were really not sober 

and quite inebriated.” 

She said an older man with the 

group told the men to go into the 

hotel and urinate there. 

“If I was a sponsor with all 

those names on the bus, I would 

be ashamed of it,” she said. 

The woman said her grandson 

was shocked by the sight. 

“He likes buses and things like 

that so we were just having a look 

and then they started going to the 

toilet. He couldn’t believe it. 

“Another 20 minutes and 

there would have been more kids 

coming home from school.” 

She said the group entered the 

hotel and spent about an hour 

there before departing. 

Tavern manager Shannon 

Gilmore said he was not aware 

of the incident or the group 

stopping at the hotel. 

The woman was 

“disappointed” to receive no 

reply after calling the Linwood 

club twice on the day of the 

incident and once the next day to 

complain. 

Said club president Andrew 

Norton: “If you want to write 

an article about some young 

men peeing on a fence, go 

right ahead. I don’t have any 

comment.”

Housing market showing signs of 


ACTIVITY IN the district’s 

property market appears to be on 

the rise again after an 18-month 

slump. 

Real estate agents are starting to 

see an increase in sales and buyers 

in the market as interest rates 

begin to drop. 

Data from Valocity shows there 

has been a 2.7 per cent increase 

in house prices over the last year, 

with the average property value in 

Selwyn now sitting at $945,000. 

While prices over a 12-month 

period have 

increased, there 

has been a 1.2 

per cent decrease 

over the last three 

months.

SCRAP BATTERIES LIKELY 

CAUSE OF TRUCK FIRE 

Scrap batteries were the cause of a 

truck fire on State Highway 1 last 

week. Dunsandel and Rolleston 

brigades responded to the fire 

which redirected traffic for 45 

minutes. Dunsandel firefigher 

Al Sheppard said the truck was 

carrying scrap metal and batteries 

with a spark likely starting it. 

Sheppard said the driver had 

pulled off to the side of the road 

once he noticed the fire.

is warning people to check their 

chimneys after the brigade 

attended multiple chimney fires

chimneys checked for blockages if

SELWYN RIVER BRIDGE 

CLOSURES START 

The Selwyn River bridge on SH1 

will be closed for 30-minute 

intervals overnight for the next 

eight weeks. The closures start 

tonight and will be on Monday 

and Wednesdays from 7pm-5am. 

The work is to lift the bridge to 

maintain its structural integrity. 

It will conclude the maintenance 

that started in May this year.

Veteran ploughman calls it a day 

after decades of straight furrows 

After about 65 years 

of match ploughing, 

stalwart John Stalker has 

ploughed his last furrow.

JOHN STALKER started match 

ploughing as a hobby, but it 

became his lifelong passion. 

The retired Greenpark 

farmer has been ploughing 

competitively since he was 

20, has won a national title 

and competed in the world 

championships. 

Now the 86-year-old Lincoln 

resident has decided it is time to 

park the tractor up. 

“It’s getting harder to do as I 

get older.” 

Despite his advancing years, 

John has lost none of his skill and 

won the open plain class at the 

annual Lincoln ploughing match 

10 days ago. He has also won all 

four local ploughing matches he 

has competed in this year. 

John comes from a farming 

family with his father and 

grandfather owning farms in 

Motukarara and Greenpark 

respectively, but John was the 

first to take up match ploughing. 

“Dad took me to the Lincoln 

ploughing match while I was at 

school or soon after, and I took it 

up there. 

“I started off in the Waihora 

Young Farmers Club and they

used to have an annual match 

but that was just for their 

members. So that’s where I 

started off using the farm plough. 

“I just did it for fun back then 

and it grew from there.” 

From that point on, John was a 

regular competitor in ploughing 

events across Canterbury. 

In 1975 he took a break from 

match ploughing to spend more 

time on the farm, but was lured 

back in about 2001. 

While out judging in Waimate 

one day, he noticed the vintage 

class and fancied giving it a go. 

John’s move to the vintage class 

paid dividends, winning the 2016 

national title in Sanson, near 

Palmerston North. 

The win earned him a ticket 

to represent New Zealand at the 

world ploughing match in York, 

England. 

“That was the only year there 

was a world match for vintage 

ploughing. There hadn’t been one 

before and there hasn’t been one 

since.” 

While the results did not come 

John said he was happy with his 

efforts. 

“I had the added complication 

of using borrowed gear. But I 

was pleased with my plots that I 

ploughed, and my manager said I 

did as good as anyone else.” 

John’s wife Neroli said she 

liked going out to the matches 

locally. 

“Some say it’s like watching 

paint dry, I don’t think it is,” she 

said. 

After selling the farm about 

12 years ago, John moved from 

Greenpark to Lincoln, finding 

a suitable home with the garage

tractors for a while yet. 

“While I can look after them, 

I’ll keep them there.” 

He also supplies five or six of 

the tractors used in the Lincoln 

Christmas Parade each year. 

John said since he started 

match ploughing, he has seen a 

change in the competitor base 

going from farmers to more 

people who just compete as a 

hobby. 

“There are a lot of people now 

who inherit a tractor from their 

family and use that.” 

John’s number one tip for 

ploughing: “You’ve got to be able 

to drive straight.”

Big upgrade plans for Hart’s Creek 

A GROUP OF Ellesmere 

locals working with councils, 

landowners and the Department 

of Conservation, is proposing a 

major upgrade of the Waitātari 

Hart’s Creek walkway, 

boardwalk and bird hide. 

Built on the shores of Te 

Waihora Lake Ellesmere by the 

Ellesmere Lions Club in the 

1980s and 90s, the walkway, 

boardwalk and bird hide have 

been maintained by Lions 

members and other local 

volunteers ever since. 

Thousands of families and 

bird watchers have used the 

track near Leeston, taking the 

opportunity to see numerous 

bird species including rare 

and endangered natives such 

as the Australasian bittern, 

white heron, and the recently 

famous “bird of the century,” the 

Australasian crested grebe. 

However, last year DOC made 

the decision to close the bird hide 

and boardwalk due to health 

and safety concerns arising from 

the age and condition of the 

structures. 

The old hide has since been 

removed. The walk as far as the 

entry to the boardwalk remains 

open.

away or take action to see if the 

boardwalk and hide could be

replaced,” said former president 

Neville Greenwood. 

“We felt we owed it to past 

members and the community to 

have a go.” 

Greenwood said the Lions 

recognised that managing 

the boardwalk and bird 

hide upgrades and future 

maintenance was beyond the 

club’s capacity, so they looked to 

their community for support.

2023, resulted 

in the formation 

of the Waitātari 

Hart’s Creek Bird 

Hide and Board 

Walk Rejuvenation 

Project 

Working Group. 

The working Neville 

group is Greenwood 

made up 

of representatives from 

the Lions, Selwyn District 

Council, DOC, Environment 

Canterbury, Hart’s Creek 

Stream Care Group, Ellesmere 

Sustainable Agriculture, Te 

Waihora Ellesmere Trust, and 

surrounding landowners, plus 

volunteer support from birding 

and technology professionals. 

The group has been given 

support in principle from Te 

Taumutu Rūnanga. 

“Our goal is to build a 

fully consented, world class 

boardwalk and bird hide 

for the benefit of the local 

and wider community for 

many generations to come,” 

Greenwood said. 

“We see this as a way to 

promote Te Waihora Lake 

Ellesmere, its wildlife, and their 

habitat, as well as the historical 

and recreational opportunities 

in the area.” 

The group has confirmed a 

preferred site for the bird hide 

(slightly further out into the 

lake), is considering options 

for a hide design, identified 

potential funding sources, and 

confirmed the appointment 

of Sarah Barnsley as project 

manager with funding from the 

council. 

Barnsley will coordinate the 

necessary first stages of the 

boardwalk and hide proposal, 

such as funding applications, 

design, consents, and tendering. 

Meanwhile, the Ellesmere 

Lions have a plan for upgrading 

the walkway, Greenwood said. 

They recently gained funding 

from the Walking Access 

Commission for surveying 

to create permanent legal 

easements across private land, 

and an esplanade route along 

the edge of Waitātari Hart’s 

Creek, from the beginning of 

the track to where the existing 

boardwalk starts.

‘Crucial’ survey to

determine future 

transport plans

A SURVEY WILL be conducted to establish 

the needs of the community 

impacted by the cancellation of the 

87 bus route between Southbridge 

and Lincoln. 

It follows a meeting held by Enviro 

Ellesmere last week to figure out 

public transport alternatives for the 

greater Southbridge area.

Elizabeth Mundt and Environment 

Canterbury councillor Ian 

Mackenzie attended the meeting 

ECan councillor John Sunckell had 

planned to attend but was unwell. 

Mundt said the meeting was an 

effective way to see the differing 

views of the community. 

“There was a huge amount of 

variety. It wasn’t a simple case of we 

needed one bus at this time going 

in this direction, it was far more 

complicated than that. So it was a good 

meeting and I think the survey is going to 

be absolutely crucial and very key.” 

Mackenzie explained to attendees what 

ECan’s stance on the matter will be going 

forward. 

“We’ve tried for three years now with

different structures, different routes and 

different ways of getting the community to 

commit to that bus route. 

“I made it very clear that there’s no 

free lunches here, and the ratepayers 

have made it clear that they didn’t 

want to fund (the bus).” 

He said any further steps need to 

be driven by the community, and the 

survey has to prove there are extra 

data groups ECan doesn’t already 

know of from its own research. 

It was also acknowledged other 

transport options had not been 

adequately communicated to the 

community, including the Ellesmere 

Community Service which provides 

shuttle transport. 

“I think it shows that we need to 

make more effort as a community 

to engage with the wider public 

on what services we have and then 

maybe also fill in the blanks for 

finding out what we would like or 

need going forward,” Mundt said.

the article about the teenage 

boy who was told to kill himself 

before he caused a fatal crash 

that claimed the life of Sandra 

Loveday (above). 

I could weep for Sandra’s 

family. They lost Sandra in tragic 

circumstances. It was a senseless 

loss of an innocent life. They 

have suffered greatly. They have 

my sincere sympathy. 

I could weep for Ryan too. 

He was the victim of horrible 

cyberbullying. Although that 

cannot justify what he did, 

he must have been feeling 

beyond terrible. 

As for the cyberbullies, I 

feel nothing but anger and 

contempt for them. I believe 

they have played a large part 

in what happened, and they 

should be held to account. 

What they did to Ryan was 

inexcusable.

article about the effects of 

the pace of reforms by the 

Government on our council rates 

(Selwyn Times, August 7). 

The persistent use of 

urgency in Parliament by this 

Government, and unprecedented 

short time-frames of mere days, 

as opposed to the previous 

standard of at least several weeks 

or months, for submissions to 

select committees are deeply 

concerning, and not just a 

“headache” as the headline 

suggests. 

It is deeply problematic the 

Minister for Local Government, 

Simeon Brown, is not concerned 

with the threat to democracy 

posed by the relentless onslaught 

of changes, the effect on 

escalating council costs and 

rates, and the risk of future 

costs on councils from changes 

which are not adequately and 

thoroughly assessed in select 

committees because of their 

unnecessary pace of too much 

haste. 

This Government is clearly 

not laser focused on the current 

or future cost of living crisis. 

Indeed, Brown states he “makes 

no apologies” for their disregard 

of reasonable concerns.

Tertiary Scholarships a game changer for Selwyn students 

Students can now apply to get a head start 

with their fees, through the Council’s tertiary 

scholarship. 

There are 12 scholarships up for grabs, including 

eight scholarships for year 12 and 13 students 

attending Darfield High School, Ellesmere College, 

Lincoln High School or Rolleston College. This year 

the Council has introduced four new scholarships to 

be awarded to students regardless of which school 

they attend, including home schoolers. 

The scholarship is awarded to students who reside 

in Selwyn and are planning to undertake full-time 

education/training at a recognised university, 

polytechnic or training institution in New Zealand. 

Students who have achieved outstanding success 

in academic, sport, cultural, art, social responsibility 

or other areas at school or in their community, and 

students who have overcome barriers or hardships, 

are encouraged to apply.

2023 scholarship is currently studying a Bachelor of 

Nursing at Ara Institute of Canterbury and says the 

scholarship has made a huge difference in her life, 

both financially and in terms of motivation. 

“It has been a game changer! It has alleviated much 

of the financial burden and allowed me to have all 

my focus on my studies rather than working extra to 

cover the costs of extra books, and equipment.”

grown about 13%. 

The population in some parts of our district

are now representing an uneven number of 

people. Because of this, we need to be more

and effective representation at our elections.

Teamwork making the dream work 

for shield-winning Darfield coaches

triumph last month was extra 

special for co-coaches Chris Lea 

and Steven Devereux. 

It was the pair’s first season in 

charge of the Ducks, having first 

joined forces with the Ellesmere 

colts team late 

last year, where 

Devereux was 

an assistant 

coach and Lea a 

manager. 

“I think we 

work pretty well 

together,” said 

Lea. 

“All season, 

there’s been a lot 

of phone calls 

and messages, 

working things 

out during 

the weeks, but 

having that 

connection last 

year with the 

colts helped.

For Devereux, who coached 

Hornby’s division 1 team for 

three years prior – for just two 

wins – he wasn’t sure what to 

expect this year. 

“I didn’t really put many 

expectations on myself this

find that joy, especially at the

He switched from Hornby to 

Darfield for convenience – he 

lives in the town, and his kids 

attend the local primary school. 

Final round to confirm 

positions in semi-finals

THE PREMIER 1 netball semifinalists 

are locked in, but which 

order they finish in remains to be 

confirmed with one round of the 

regular season to play. 

Burnham, Broadfield A and 

Greenpark B were already confirmed 

as top-four finishers but 

Lincoln’s passage wasn’t secured 

until Halswell RL and Rolleston 

lost last week – meaning Lincoln 

will finish fourth despite losing to 

Burnham on Thursday. 

Tomorrow’s matches serve only 

to determine who plays who in 

next week’s semi-finals, while a 

top-of-the-table clash between 

Burnham and Broadfield A will 

decide who finishes the regular 

season on top. 

Burnham won the previous 

match between the teams, 34-32, 

and coach Denise Keno said she 

was expecting a similarly tight 

game second time round. 

“They’re a very young team, 

that are playing very well, so I 

imagine it’ll be very close.” 

Keno said she was just looking 

for a good performance, without 

losing any players for the semis. 

“For me, it will just be about 

the girls. Hopefully, we don’t 

have any injuries or illnesses this 

week.”

“They’re confident, definitely 

not cocky, because they know that 

the next three games are going to 

be so tough,’’ she said. 

“I think they’re a little bit on 

edge about it, but I think they are 

ready to go.”

Greenpark take on winless 

Dunsandel, before Lincoln plays 

Broadfield B, and Rolleston and 

Halswell RL square off. 

“It’s just the community that 

I’ve sort of started to blend 

into.” 

Regular injuries cut Lea’s 

playing career short, but 12 

years ago he took charge of 

Darfield’s under-18s in a bid to 

stop himself from playing again, 

and has since coached the colts 

and division 2 teams. 

“I think if I tried to just stop 

playing rugby, I’d always come 

back for a game or two,” he said. 

“But I think it (coaching) was 

good, it shifts your focus, but 

you’re still highly involved and 

I’d miss the team camaraderie.” 

Lea and Devereux say they’re 

similar kinds of coaches – more 

quiet and laid-back than inyour-face. 

“Yelling and carrying on like 

a pork chop is not going to help 

the boys at all,” said Lea. 

“So I’ve always been a pretty 

calm fella when I’m coaching.” 

Said Devereux: “I’d rather sit 

back and just let the boys do 

their thing. 

“That’s what I’ve liked about 

the whole Darfield set-up. 

There’s so much talent and 

experience in that squad that I 

was able to sit back and take a 

fair bit in.” 

They both hope to be back 

next year as Darfield look to 

defend their title. 

“We haven’t had those 

conversations yet, we’re just 

letting it just settle on what’s 

been a good season,” said Lea. 

“I’d definitely love to (return 

as coach) if the opportunity 

arose,” Devereux said. 

“But it’s something that hasn’t 

really been discussed yet. 

“In my eyes, I can’t see why 

they wouldn’t offer it to us, but 

that’s just me personally.”

Planning ahead for a summer harvest 

It’s the perfect time 

to plant potatoes for 

harvesting in December. 

Check out this useful 

gardening guide for all 

you need to know 

Vegetables 

Potatoes for harvesting in 

December can be planted this 

month if the soil can be worked 

easily. In smaller gardens, 

concentrating on early varieties 

such as Cliffs Kidney, Liseta, Swift 

or Jersey Benne makes sense as 

they are ready to harvest when 

shop-bought new potatoes are 

expensive. For mid-season crops it 

is better to choose a good keeper, 

such as Maris Anchor, which 

can be used as a new potato but 

matures into a useful all-purpose 

tuber. 

Because potatoes are subtropical 

plants, they are susceptible to frost 

damage. Protect early shoots by 

covering them with large flower 

pots, pea straw or frost cloth. 

Other vegetables that are 

described as early usually mean 

they mature in a shorter time than 

main-crop varieties. Early carrots, 

for instance, are those which 

produce shorter or round roots, 

such as Parmex, and will be ready 

for eating about 75 days after 

sowing seed, compared with 100 

days for larger types. 

SPUD SEASON: Now is the perfect time to plant potatoes if you want a December harvest.

Early white turnips, including 

the Japanese variety Hakurei, 

lettuces and radishes can be sown 

now in sheltered gardens that face 

north or northeast. 

A good vegetable for beginners 

is the Jerusalem artichoke 

(Helianthus tuberosus), as they 

require little attention and will 

produce a reasonable crop, even 

in poor soils. Their only drawback 

is a tendency to become invasive. 

Plant tubers 30cm apart and 15cm 

deep in rows 1m apart. They will 

grow to more than 2m tall and 

produce attractive yellow flowers. 

Globe artichokes and cardoons 

are closely-related perennials 

whose flowers resemble huge, 

scotch thistle heads. 

Both plants can be increased 

by dividing existing plants or by 

sowing seed. 

Cardoons are grown for their 

celery-like stalks, while the heads 

(globes) of artichokes are eaten 

before any flower colour can be 

seen. Both plants grow 1.5-2m 

tall, so place them 1m apart. If not 

grown as vegetables, they are fine 

decorative plants for the back of a 

garden bed. 

Rhubarb roots can be planted 

now in rich soil. Plants (crowns) 

are set 1m apart, just deep enough 

for the bud to be level with the 

ground surface. Rhubarb can 

also be grown from seed sown in 

spring or autumn. 

Brussels sprouts can be sown 

now, for planting out in the first 

week of December. Early planting 

is important in southern districts, 

as growth slows early and plants 

that have not reached 70cm to 

1m in height by autumn will have 

poor crops over winter. 

Cabbage and cauliflower plants 

can be planted now. Most soils 

will suit cabbages but cauliflowers 

demand rich soil and a warmer 

climate than their close relative, 

broccoli. 

Onions can be sown as soon as 

the soil starts warming. They need 

to be in early to allow bulbs to 

develop to a good size before the 

days shorten at the end of January. 

Sow seeds thinly and not more 

than 1cm deep. 

Leeks for planting out later are 

usually sown on a seed bed of rich 

soil. Adding some coarse river 

sand will encourage a good root 

system. 

Shallots and garlic can still be 

planted in well-manured soils, 

spacing cloves at 15cm in rows 

30-40cm apart. 

Beetroot is best sown at this 

time of the year under cloches or 

in a warm position. Use a small 

variety, such as Bonny Baby, and 

use as soon as the roots are no 

bigger than a golf ball. Beetroot 

likes a well-limed soil and needs 

plenty of potash. 

Flowers 

Hardy annuals snapdragons 

(Antirrhinum), lobelia, phlox and 

dianthus may be sown under 

glass, while larkspurs, clarkias, 

cornflowers, godetias and lovein-a-mist 

(Nigella), which are 

even tougher, should germinate 

outdoors in milder areas. 

Lawns sown in autumn are 

likely to need some attention. 

Frosts may have lifted the young 

grass, so a light pressing will be 

needed to firm the roots back into 

the ground. 

Fruit 

If fruit trees have not yet been 

pruned, this should be done as 

soon as possible as already early 

flowering trees will be showing 

signs of bursting into bud. Use 

clean, sharp pruners and cover 

every cut, no matter how small, 

with pruning paste to reduce the 

likelihood of disease, particularly 

silverleaf fungus.

MILITARY EXERCISE

New Zealand Army Exercise will be 

conducted in the Mt Hutt Range area over 

the period 19 – 23 August 2024. 

The exercise will involve up to 25 personnel 

of 2/1st Royal New Zealand Infantry

2024 UPPER AHAURA-NANCY AERIAL POSSUM 

CONTROL OPERATION UPDATE 

Vector Free Marlborough (VFM) wishes to advise the public of its intention to aerially apply the toxin 

Sodium fluoroacetate (1080) to the Upper Ahaura-Nancy area for the purpose of controlling possums. The 

Upper Ahaura-Nancy operation is being carried out on behalf of OSPRI as part of its TBfree New Zealand 

programme, which aims to eradicate bovine tuberculosis from wildlife vectors that pose a risk to farmed 

cattle and deer. 

This is an update from previous notifications sent out. Due to delays the imminent 

commencement of this operation originally scheduled anytime from 01 July 2024 is scheduled 

at the earliest opportunity anytime from mid-August 2024. 

Description of Area 

The northern boundary of the 2024 Upper Ahaura-Nancy operational permission area extends from the 

vicinity of Clarke River/Paddys Creek, with the southern western boundary bordering Inchbonnie and the 

Taramakau River. The western edge of the operational area is bounded by Lake Brunner Road, Bell Hill Road, 

Haupiri Road, and Ahaura Kopara Road. Mount Baron is the extreme eastern point of the operational area. 

Public Access & Recreational Facilities 

Public access to tracks and DOC facilities will be restricted while the aerial application of toxic bait takes 

place and afterwards until they have been inspected and cleared of most toxic baits. 

DOC huts identified in the permission area are Camp Creek Hut, Cone Creek Hut, Lake Morgan Hut, Waikiti 

Hut, Tutaekuri Hut, and Slaty Creek Hut. 

The following tracks have been identified as being in the permission area Camp Creek Route, Crooked River 

Route (to Jacko Flat Hut, Top Crooked Hut), Brian O’Lyn Route, Hope Pass Route, Amuri Pass Route, Waikiti 

Route, Evans River – Granite Creek Route, and Granite Creek Route – Rough and Tumble Creek. 

Toxin warning signs will be in place at all track entrances immediately prior to the application of toxic bait. 

Advisory signage will also be installed at key sites prior to non-toxic prefeed application. 

Commencement Date 

Subject to favourable weather, control is planned to commence at the earliest opportunity from mid- 

August, with the aerial application of non-toxic, cereal pre-feed pellets. This will be followed approximately 

7-10 days later by the aerial application of bait containing biodegradable sodium fluoroacetate (1080). 

All work is weather dependent, and commencement may be later than indicated. In the event of an 

extended delay, further notices will be placed to advise the public. 

Bait Description 

Aerial control using 1080: 

• Pre-feed - Non-toxic cereal-based pellet, approximately 16 mm long, cinnamon-lured, and non-dyed 

(sandy coloured). 

• Toxic bait - Cereal-based pellet, approximately 20 mm long, cinnamon-lured, and dyed green with a toxic 

loading of 0.15% Sodium fluoroacetate (1080). 

The aerial operation will use helicopters equipped with Global Positioning System (GPS) hardware and 

calibrated buckets to ensure accurate placement. 

Precautions 

The pesticide is poisonous to humans and domestic animals. The public are reminded of the danger that 

toxic baits and possum carcasses pose, particularly to children and dogs. 

• DO NOT TOUCH OR EAT BAITS 

• Children must be kept under strict supervision in the control area. 

• Dogs must be kept under strict control at all times and not have access to, or be taken into, the control 

area, as they are particularly susceptible to harm from contact with toxic baits and poisoned carcasses. 

The risk that poisoned carcasses pose to dogs may extend downstream of the control area. 

• Toxin warning signs will be installed at main public entry points and the public are reminded that it is an 

offence to remove this warning signage. Please follow the instructions on the signs. 

• Game animals should not be sold or taken for eating from within or adjacent to this area until it is 

declared clear of pesticides.

Thinking about entering 

the rental market? 

Buying a home to rent out to tenants is a big step and a significant investment on your part. 

As a landlord you will want your tenants to love and care for your property as much as you do. 

Renting out your property does not 

need to be stressful – if you plan carefully, 

renting can be a great opportunity for both 

you and your tenant. 

Check out these great tips to create a 

healthy landlord-tenant relationship 

1. Treat your rental property and 

tenants in a professional business-like 

manner. Think of your tenants as your 

clients, and be prepared to give them 

excellent customer service. Remember 

they are paying for a service – they need a 

home to live in and you are providing it for 

them. 

2. Prepare the property for occupancy. 

Undertake all repairs and maintenance 

before the tenant moves in. Make sure 

the house is in a clean and tidy condition; 

lawns are mowed, rubbish removed, and 

that everything is in full working order. 

3. Decide on your expectations. Before 

you advertise on the rental market, decide 

on things such as who will maintain the 

gardens, mow the lawns, and whether you 

allow pets, subletting, etc. 

4. Set your fee. Research rental fees for 

properties similar to yours in your area. 

Base your fees on the current rental market 

value along with your own financial 

expectations. 

5. Inspect the property together. Walk 

around the property with your new tenant 

before they move in and make a note of 

any existing damages or issues. Give your 

tenant a copy of the inspection document. 

6. Make sure the tenant can move in on 

the first day the rental contract begins. 

Once the tenant has signed the contract 

and paid their bond and advanced rent, 

make sure the property is available for 

them to move into from the first day as per 

the contract. 

7. Make it easy to communicate. 

Avoid miscommunication. Make sure 

your tenants know they can contact you 

quickly with more than one option such 

as a phone number and an email address. 

Reply promptly to your tenants calls or 

emails to avoid any mounting frustrations 

or misconceptions that you don’t care. 

Always make or keep a written copy of 

any issues or repair requests and send the 

tenant a copy too. This will show that you 

have listened and are prepared to act. 

8. Welcome your new tenant to 

their new home. If you are not able to 

personally welcome your tenants on the 

move-in day, you could leave them a card 

and flowers. Show tenants that you not 

only value and trust them with the care of 

your property but that you are also looking 

forward to having them as your tenants.
