The following is the fourth edition of our annual 

Experience Madison magazine. As you peruse its 

pages, you will discover the incredible experiences 

that Madison has to offer. 

We eagerly anticipate your visit to Madison, also known 

as the Rose City, regardless of the time of year. Located less 

than 25 miles from Manhattan, Madison is a quintessential 

suburban community in southeast Morris County, offering a 

blend of tranquility and allure. Our town boasts a rich cultural 

tapestry, featuring attractions such as the world-class jazz club 

Shanghai Jazz, the renowned Shakespeare Theatre of New 

Jersey, the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts, the Madison 

Community Arts Center and much more. 

Madison is home to more than 50 restaurants and bars 

within its compact 4-square-mile area, providing visitors with 

ample dining and entertainment options. Additionally, our 

walkable downtown area promises a diverse and enjoyable 

shopping experience. 

The thriving retail and commercial district along Main 

Street (Route 124) receives support from the Downtown 

Development Commission and the Madison Area Chamber of 

Commerce. Notably, the Madison Civic Commercial Historic 

District—encompassing much of downtown, Borough 

Hall and the train station—is listed on the State Register of 

Historic Places. 

In addition to its cultural landmarks, Madison hosts numerous 

community events throughout the year, including a seasonal 

farmers market, local festivals and parades. Visitors can 

take advantage of free street parking and parking in municipal 

shoppers’ lots, as well as ample bicycle racks. 

To the west of the town center lies the picturesque, wooded 

campus of Drew University. Farther north, the Florham campus 

of Fairleigh Dickinson University spans the towns of Florham 

Park and Madison, occupying 178 acres that were once 

part of the country estate of socialites Florence Vanderbilt 

and Hamilton Twombly. Just under a mile west, the Saint 

Elizabeth University campus is located in Convent Station. 

Recognized as the top town to live in by New Jersey 

Monthly’s Top Towns survey in 2019, the Borough of Madison 

continues to thrive. Boasting a low crime rate, reasonable

Early Trades & Crafts 

MUSEUMS ARE

about our world, to 

understand our history 

and to preserve 

the cultural heritage for 

future generations. After 

five years of planning and 

construction, the Museum 

of Early Trades & Crafts’ 

new Viewable Storage 

Facility recently opened, 

providing the museum 

with a state-of-the-art 

on-site facility to house its 

collection of more than 

8,000 artifacts and archival 

materials, expanding 

its capacity to preserve its 

collection and strengthen 

conservation efforts. 

This $1.4 million project 

also provides visual access 

for the public to observe 

the conservation and 

care of the collection 

through a large viewing 

area, making this process 

another opportunity for 

education. Protecting and 

preserving our cultural 

heritage that is the collection 

benefits everyone 

and enables scholarly 

research and the eventual 

digitization of the entire 

collection. From the very 

beginning of this project, 

the staff and Trustees of 

METC have focused on 

the responsibility they 

w 

have as stewards of this 

material culture to maintain, 

conserve and protect 

it so that each object can 

tell its story about the 

people who used these 

tools, were kept warm by 

the blankets, wrote the 

letters and left this legacy 

for us to learn from and to 

understand their individual 

histories.

new facility realizes a longterm 

goal for our museum 

that will ensure the sustainability 

of our collection 

and enhance our educational 

opportunities and 

public access to archival 

materials that represent a 

part of our collective history,”

UNIVERSITY. 

With a beautiful arts center, top theater companies, 

a well-regarded museum and more 

institutions, Madison is home to an arts and 

cultural scene that is vibrant, flourishing and 

growing. 

At the heart of the community is the Madison 

Community Arts Center, which opened about five 

years ago. It hosts a packed schedule filled with theatrical performances and 

concerts, art gallery exhibitions for local students, open mics and workshops, 

film series and classes for the community. 

The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, which is completely dedicated 

to classical works, is the only theater of its kind in the Garden State. 

The company started in Cape May in 1963 before moving locally in 1972. 

Performances are held at two locations: the main indoor stage, which is 

the 22,000-square-foot F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre on the campus 

of Drew University, and the outdoor stage at the beautiful amphitheater at 

Saint Elizabeth University, surrounded by the tranquility of nature. Today, 

the Shakespeare Theatre is helmed by artistic director Brian B. Crowe, who 

joined the institution in January and became just the third artisitc director 

in its six-decade history. 

Are you a music lover? Spend an evening 

at Shanghai Jazz, one of the best jazz clubs 

in the world. At this Main Street institution, 

which has been delighting guests for 30 years, 

visitors can experience top-notch music and 

delicious Asian food. Be sure to check out the 

venue’s Encore Bar & Lounge, too, a newer 

addition downstairs that offers a secluded 

speakeasy vibe.

been a landmark in downtown Madison for

a deeper connection with local history,

The Madison Public Library offers

The Madison Community Pool is a 

summer favorite, as much for its facilities 

as for its position as a community 

gathering spot. Families can also get 

involved with the Madison Community

veggies; walk or bike through Loantaka 

Brook Reservation; or join the 

Madison Area YMCA. 

The Madison Recreation Complex 

is a familiar place to many sports-loving

home to an accessible trail, a paved path 

from the entrance on Ridgedale Avenue

vibrant downtown is the heart of any town, and there’s 

no doubt that Madison has one of the best in the state. 

“It’s your quintessential American downtown, with 

shopping, dining, a nice ambience and a sense of community,” 

says Frank Cocuzza, owner of Suburban Shoes, 

which has made its home in Madison since 1947. 

A day spent downtown always starts with plenty 

of free parking, both on the street and in the public 

lots behind stores and on either side of Main Street. The clean, wide, 

tree-lined sidewalks make a walk here incredibly pleasant, whether 

you’re shopping, heading out for a bite to eat or enjoying some exercise. 

True to Madison’s historic roots, restored 19th-century brick buildings 

flank the sidewalks. 

Public benches and outdoor café tables provide a spot to rest or 

enjoy food or drink. Old-fashioned gaslights add more charm, and 

seasonal flowers add a dose of beauty to a stroll through town. 

Shoppers have every type of store just footsteps away, with everything 

from home decor at shops like the Pink Pear and Home Sweet 

Home, to secondhand clothing at New Leaf Consignment, to sports 

equipment at Alfred’s Sports Shop, to heirloom-quality childrenswear 

at Wildflowers Boutique, to photography equipment at Madison 

PhotoPlus. The borough’s strong small-business community is made up 

of many shops that have been here for decades, as well as newcomers 

each year that are welcomed with open arms.

Spinning Into Butter and The World According 

to Garp. We have to think A Beautiful 

Mind’s Oscar win for Best Picture had a 

little something to do with Madison. 

Both Fairleigh Dickinson and Drew University 

have become favorite destinations for 

casting directors over the years. One of the 

most famous episodes ever of The Sopranos 

was filmed at Drew: “College,” from 

Season 1. In the episode, Tony (played by the 

late James Gandolfini) takes his daughter 

Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) for a college 

visit at a campus that was supposed to be 

located in a picturesque town in Maine but 

was really Drew in Madison. As true fans 

undoubtedly remember, once Tony dropped 

Meadow off on campus for the afternoon, he 

went off to do a Mob hit. 

It’s not just episodic television and movies 

that have used Madison as a backdrop. 

Ads for brands like Charmin, Kit Kat, 

Motorola and Tylenol date back to the 

1980s and ’90s. 

More productions could be slated to 

come to Madison. In recent years, a growing 

number of film and television projects have 

chosen to shoot in New Jersey, after Governor 

Phil Murphy reinstated tax incentives in 

2018. Many directors, including New Jerseyborn 

Zach Braff and Kevin Smith, are committed 

to both making their films here and 

setting them in New Jersey towns. 

Several celebrities also have ties to 

Madison. Stand-up comedian and former 

Saturday Night Live cast member Janeane 

Garofalo lived in Madison as a child and 

attended Madison High School, where she 

served as junior class secretary. Olympic 

figure skater JoJo Starbuck, Geraldine 

Rockefeller Dodge, TV producer Andy 

Breckman, former NFL quarterback Neil 

O’Donnell and former baseball pitcher Don 

Newcombe all live or have lived in Madison. 

Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek, 

though born in Connecticut, attended Drew 

on an academic scholarship in the mid- 

1990s. In May, he went back to campus as 

the 2024 commencement speaker. 

“As you navigate life outside of the forest, 

I would invite you to ask that newly 

minted, freshly certified brain to 

execute at the behest of your heart, 

and not the other way around,” he 

told the Class of 2024.

Madison’s signature event is better than 

ever at 49 years old. 

First established in 1974 by Mayor Elizabeth 

Baumgartner to promote the downtown 

business district, Bottle Hill Day now draws 

between 10,000 and 20,000 people from 

Madison and other towns in New Jersey 

to the heart of the borough every fall. This

place on Saturday, October 5. 

There is something for every kind of New 

Jerseyan at Bottle Hill Day. The event, which 

takes place rain or shine, features the can’tmiss 

Music Festival, a beer garden, amusement 

areas that children (and kids at heart) 

will adore, and more than 225 vendors selling 

everything from crafts to clothing. 

The Music Festival—organized by the 

Madison Arts & Cultural Alliance—is a favorite 

for music lovers of all ages. Showcasing 

local talent, the fest features performers 

on various stages throughout the day. Seating 

is available at most of the stages. 

As for food and drink, there is plenty of it. A 

Food Court on Cook Avenue and a Food Truck 

Court on Kings Road keep eventgoers satisfied 

all day. The DDC Beer Garden is a must-visit 

stop for brew lovers; it is on Kings Road between 

Maple Avenue and Prospect Street. 

Classic car fans get a real treat at the Madison 

Car Show, a favorite event every year. 

Hosted by the Madison Chamber of Commerce 

and Madison PBA Local 92, it features 

antiques, classics, customs and hot rods in 

the Ambulance Corps Lot on Kings Road. 

Awards are doled out in the afternoon. 

The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts,

Why is Bottle Hill Day called Bottle 

Hill Day? The name dates back to the 1715 

establishment of the humble village of Bottle 

Hill, in what is now the bustling borough of 

Madison—which received its current name 

in 1834 after residents thought the name Bottle 

Hill was too rustic. They chose Madison 

after James Madison, the fourth president of 

the United States and the namesake of the 

local private school Madison Academy. 

These days, Bottle Hill Day represents 

a family-friendly community celebration 

presented by the Madison Downtown Development 

Commission. However, it is easy— 

and a fun history lesson—to remember 

Madison’s roots by visiting the Bottle Hill 

Historic District of Madison any time.

it was first established in 1974 by Mayor

development so that Madison’s beautiful 

downtown continues to thrive. Bottle 

Hill Day was created in 1974 to promote 

the business district. The name originated

Over the years, it has grown, evolving 

into a family-centric entertainment and

more than 100 superior vehicles and hundreds of spectators. The 

car show is held in conjunction with and adjacent to Bottle Hill Day, 

Madison’s annual street fair and town-wide celebration.

Museum of Early Trades & Crafts

Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge 

The legacy of GRD, which began in the early 1900s, 

lives on today in many forms. Born into one of the 

wealthiest families in the U.S., she married into 

yet another influential industrialist family. In 1916, 

they purchased the estate in Madison now known 

as Giralda Farms, and secured her place in history 

through her many philanthropic endeavors. Her 

love of dogs was clearly her greatest passion, leading 

her to establish the well-known Morris & Essex 

Kennel Club Dog Show in 1927. Upon the untimely 

death of her only son Marcellus Hartley Dodge Jr., 

she built the magnificent Hartley Dodge Memorial 

in Madison in 1935, which has served the residents 

of this small town for generations. This exhibit 

contains photographs, objects and archival materials 

that speak to her life, her passion for animal 

welfare and her impact on the community. Please

Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge and her legacy.
