Union
concerned
by fitness
tests
for port
workers
THE MARITIME Union is
concerned about Lyttelton
Port Company’s approach to
mandatory fitness tests for
employees.
The union said it was
attending mediation with LPC
tomorrow on the issue of health
monitoring.
The assessments have been
brought in following the death
of a staff member, Don Grant,
while on the job in April 2022.
Grant died when he was
struck and killed by coal being
moved from the port via a
conveyor belt and loaded onto a
cargo ship by a jet-slinger.
At the time of the incident,
Grant was working as a
hatchman on the deck of the
ship, following Lyttelton Port
Company procedures and
standing in the position he was
trained to.
Last month, LPC was fined
about half-a-million dollars.
Maritime Union of New
Zealand said LPC pleaded
guilty in November 2023 to
one charge under the Health
and Safety at Work Act 2015
brought by industry regulator
Maritime NZ.
Union national secretary Carl
Findlay said workers welcomed
the guilty plea and sentencing,
and a lot had
changed since
Grant’s death
– including
around work
practices
involving coal
operations.
But workers Carl Findlay
were concerned
about a mandatory fitness
for work programme for
employees, he said.
“The workforce is just
shocked and disappointed that
the port company seems to be
using Don’s death as a catalyst
PHOTO: NATE MCKINNON/RNZ
to driving in a mandatory
medical assessment, and the
union is not having any input
or say into what that looks like.
In our view, it basically takes
away any right of the employee’s
privacy.”
Findlay said this had been
pushed through without regard
to workers’ concerns over their
financial protection and the
well-being of any members who
failed the assessment, with the
ultimate result of people losing
employment if they did not
meet the standard.
A Death in Cornwall
by Daniel Silva
The #1 internationally bestselling author Daniel Silva delivers another stunning
thriller in this action-packed tale of high stakes international intrigue.
A brutal murder, a missing masterpiece, a mystery only Gabriel Allon can solve
. . .
When an old friend asks art restorer and legendary spy Gabriel Allon for help
with a baffling murder investigation, Gabriel finds himself pursuing a powerful
and dangerous new adversary. The victim is Charlotte Blake, a
celebrated professor of art history from Oxford who spends her
weekends in the same seaside village where Gabriel once lived
under an assumed identity. Her murder appears to be the work
of a diabolical serial killer who has been terrorizing the Cornish
countryside. But there are a number of telltale inconsistencies,
including a missing mobile phone. And then there is the
mysterious three-letter cypher she left behind on a notepad in her
study. Gabriel soon discovers that Professor Blake was searching for
a looted Picasso worth more than a $100 million, and he takes up the
chase for the painting as only he can - with six Impressionist canvases forged by
his own hand and an unlikely team of operatives that includes a world-famous
violinist, a beautiful master thief, and a lethal contract killer turned British spy.
The result is a stylish and wildly entertaining mystery that moves at lightning
speed from the cliffs of Cornwall to the enchanted island of Corsica and, finally,
to a breathtaking climax on the very doorstep of 10 Downing Street.
View from the Second Row
by Samuel Whitelock
The most capped All Black in history speaks for the record about his storied
career, spanning four World Cups, nine Super Rugby finals and 153 appearances
in the black jersey. After making his debut for New Zealand in 2010 at the age of
21, Samuel Whitelock was selected for the 2011 Rugby World Cup campaign. He
played in all seven matches and emerged victorious with the nation’s first trophy
since 1987. Four years later he played in all seven matches of the 2015 tournament,
becoming one of an elite group of players to win back-to-back World Cups.
Whitelock was instrumental in the most successful period of All Blacks rugby in
the modern era, and in his retirement year he topped off his domestic career with
a performance for the ages, and a record run of championships for the Crusaders.
In this autobiography, Whitelock speaks in his own words about physical and
mental toughness, leadership and coaching, friends and foes on the footy field,
tradition, darkening the jersey and how family and farming provided the bedrock
for global success. View from the Second Row is an inspiring story and a journey
like no other, and the epitome of what makes New Zealand rugby special.
Concert to
raise funds for
schoolhouse
restoration
TE RŪNANGA o Ngāti Wheke
is hosting an evening of classical
music at Rāpaki Marae to raise
funds for the restoration of its
heritage schoolhouse.
The concert is taking place from
2-5pm on August 24 inside the
marae, and will feature
the Canterbury Association
Oxford Project.
The Rāpaki schoolhouse
is a rare example of a
19th-century building
within a Ngāi Tahu settlement.
Built in the 1870s,
it was part of a network
of village primary schools
established by the Native
School Department to
provide education for children in
Ngāi Tahu communities.
For 70 years, Rāpaki School
served as a vital educational and
cultural centre for children growing
up at Rāpaki.
Donald
Couch
“Our old schoolhouse has served
us for 150 years, and with this
restoration, it will serve us and the
community for another 150 years,”
said kaumātua Donald Couch.
“It will not only represent an
important time in our history but
will provide a supplementary
informal space to do
things separately from the
marae.”
The restoration has
involved significant repairs,
maintenance, seismic
strengthening, and moving
the building to a less erosion-prone
site on the same
section.
Rāpaki School featured in
the recently released film We Were
Dangerous, about a trio of “delinquent”
schoolgirls railing against
the colonial system in 1950s New
Zealand.
Tickets cost $49 from Eventbrite.
“In short, MUNZ see this
as a breach of good faith
and LPC not honouring our
collective employment agreement.”
The union was agreeable
to fitness for work health
monitoring, but wanted LPC
to negotiate in good faith,
Findlay said.
“We want to have a talk
about this mandatory testing
and how that’s all going to
look and roll out. There’s not
just one job down on the waterfront,
there’s several jobs,
so what will that look like if
you weren’t fit to do a certain
duty, could you possibly do
another duty? We’re guessing
they’re thinking ‘if you’re not
fit for that job you’re not fit for
any job so you’re out’,” he said.
Lyttelton Port Company
chief executive Graeme
Sumner said accident investigators
recommended mandatory
health assessments after
Grant’s death.
LPC said these were
introduced on July 31, and
had been standard for new
employees since 2023.
“LPC’s introduction of
mandatory health assessments
follows the TAIC (Transport
Accident Investigation Committee)
report’s recommendation
after the tragic accident
on Anzac Day 2022,” Sumner
said.
“The health assessments
are crucial for identifying
employees who may need
support with a comprehensive
health management plan and
rehabilitation. This initiative
aligns with our obligations
under the Health & Safety
at Work Act 2015 to prevent
harm to our workers and
others due to health-related
limitations in performing
their duties safely.”
Sumner said the company
ACCIDENT:
Port worker
Don Grant
died in
April 2022
after he
was struck
by coal
being
moved
onto a
cargo ship.
had undertaken full consultation
with staff and unions.
“Since June 2022, we have
engaged in meaningful
dialogue with our staff and
unions regarding health
monitoring. It was outlined
in our annual report last year,
and our feedback to TAIC was
included in their report. It has
also been standard for new
employees since 2023.
“We’ve addressed all queries
throughout the consultation
and feedback process, which
formally began on 1 May
2024. RMTU (Rail and
Maritime Transport Union)
requested an extension of
the feedback period, which
was granted, reflecting our
commitment to thorough and
inclusive communication.
“The decision document
was shared with all staff
following the consultation’s
conclusion on 20 June 2024.
All unions were informed of
the decision 24 hours prior
to the broader organisational
communication. LPC will
continue to engage with our
unions using in good faith
consultation and in a collaborative
and co-operative manner,
as we have been doing.”
Rail and Maritime Transport
Union disputed this,
saying there was no meaningful
engagement in the
decision-making process.
“LPC saying they considered
RMTU’s feedback within
their consultation process of
the MHA (Mandatory Health
Assessment) is a clear example
of this. LPC did not make any
changes to the MHA at any
stage of the process, basically,
they came up with a plan, then
went away and tried to work
out how they would force it on
the workforce, and that is what
they have done,” the union
said.
Council staff to search
for stormwater issues
Islands cleared to
encourage birdlife
THREE OF THE islands in
McCormacks Bay have been
upgraded to encourage the return
of birdlife.
The work was made possible
after fundraising by the Avon-
Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust
and city council regional parks
rangers, plus a grant from the
Sumner Ferrymead Foundation.
Keystone Ecology was
contracted to carry out the work,
which involved the removal of
invasive plants and long grass.
Native ice plants were planted
to keep weed/grass growth under
control.
Trust manager Tanya Jenkins
said she was thrilled to see the
islands cleared, which would
allow birds to roost and nest
there again.
“Many wading birds will only
roost or nest in areas free of
vegetation. Perhaps so they have
a clear view of potential dangers
such as rats, cats and dogs, and
this is what we wanted to offer
our estuary birds,” Jenkins said.
“I was thrilled to see that
within days of completion, a flock
of 42 pied stilts showed their
appreciation by roosting on one
of the islands at a high tide.”
AKAROA RESIDENTS can
expect a knock at the door as
work continues to reduce the
amount of stormwater getting
into the wastewater network.
The city council is visiting
every property in the town,
looking for sources of
stormwater entering the
wastewater network on private
properties.
“A lot of Akaroa property
owners do not live in the
township full time, so if you
aren’t at home we’ll check your
pipes and leave a letter in the
letterbox,” said city council
head of three waters Gavin
Hutchison.
“If there’s nothing of concern,
you won’t hear from us again
but we’ll get in touch with
people who do have issues to
work on a fix.”
City council staff will be
looking for cross-connections,
which is when a stormwater pipe
is connected to the wastewater
network or vice-versa.
“When there is a crossconnection,
roof drainpipes
could be draining rainwater
into the sewer, which puts
unnecessary pressure on the
Akaroa system,” Hutchison said.
STORMWATER: City council staff are visiting every property
in Akaroa to search for sources of stormwater entering the
town’s wastewater network.
PHOTO: NEWSLINE
“Reducing pressure by lowering
the amount of stormwater getting
into the wastewater network is a
really important piece of work for
the council.
“Having less water in the
system will improve the capacity
in the network and reduce the
risk of overflows into private
property, streams and the
harbour during wet weather.”
City council staff began
knocking on doors last week and
will continue to work their way
around properties until the end
of the year.
Dog survey
sees call for
protecting
birds, wildlife
BETTER CONTROLS on dogs
to protect the natural habitats of
birds and ecological restoration
has been the outcome of a city
council survey.
Every 10 years, the city council
reviews its dog control policy
and bylaw, which set out how the
45,000 dogs registered across the
district should be managed in
public spaces.
A survey in July saw more
than 6000 responses to
questions about whether dogs
should be leashed on paths
and tracks, protecting wildlife
and natural habitats, dog
owner responsibilities and how
community spaces are used.
“What we heard loud and clear
from the responses is whether
people own a dog or not, they
understand how vital it is that
we protect our natural habitats
from being disturbed,” said city
council animal services manager
Lionel Bridger.
Of the survey respondents,
77 per cent said there should be
better controls about where dogs
are allowed in the Te Ihutai Avon
Heathcote Estuary, which is one
of the country’s most important
coastal wetlands, with more than
140 bird species.
Sixty-nine per cent thought
there should be better dog
controls in parts of the Ōtākaro
Avon River Corridor to protect
the significant habitat restoration
work and wildlife.
Sixty-four per cent thought
there should be some restrictions
in new stormwater basins like
Te Kuru Wetland, to help bird
populations establish.
Bridger said it was good to see
people understanding that dogs
can have an impact on these
important ecological sites.
“Particularly in breeding
season, dogs can have a
devastating effect – even
the presence of a dog can
make a bird abandon its nest,”
he said.
“But we won’t be taking away
a dog’s ability to have a run
in open spaces, this is about
developing a balanced approach
which meets the needs of people,
birds, dogs and wildlife.”
“We’re lucky to have over
10,000 hectares of parks
across the district as well a
lot of accessible coastline, so
there are lots of great places
for dog walking and off-leash
exercising.”
Other survey questions
included whether dogs should
be leashed on shared paths,
HAVE YOUR SAY Tell us
your off-leash dog story in
footpaths in parks and on
formed tracks.
The survey also asked about
sports fields, community gardens
and jetties/wharves, whether
short leashes should be required
on footpaths, and how many
dogs one person should have
control of at a time.
Said Bridger: “Overall, we
had really positive responses.
One area where the results were
less clear cut was a question on
leashing dogs on formed tracks.
Forty-four per cent of people
thought dogs should be leashed
on formed tracks to protect
wildlife, biodiversity, safety and
grazing stock, but 49 per cent
thought they shouldn’t as they
wanted to prioritise off leash
adventures.
“We will be taking all of this
into consideration when developing
the latest version of the
bylaw and policy so thank you to
everyone who took the time to
respond.”
A draft bylaw and policy will
go out for public feedback later
this year with the final version
to be considered by the city
council.
Meanwhile, free dog adoptions
are continuing at the city
council’s animal shelter on
throughout August. The council
wiped the adoption fee for July,
which saw 13 dogs adopted,
almost double the number in
June. Dog registration and
vaccination fees still apply.
First look inside historic Odeon Theatre
• By Geoff Sloan
THE FUTURE OF the historic
Odeon Theatre is one step closer
to being decided following the
damaging quakes, but there’s
still work to be done.
Bay Harbour News was
given the first peek inside the
former theatre on Tuam St as
structural work had recently
been completed.
Shipping containers supporting
the front of the building were
removed in January, allowing
work to begin on ‘pinning’ the
decorative facade.
Environment Canterbury’s
director of corporate and
public transport services Giles
Southwell said all outside work
has been finished, allowing any
future development within the
building itself to be carried out.
“Steel piles into the ground
allow a steel frame to be put up
to support the facade. We’ve
been very careful not to actually
damage or interfere with the
facade.”
The 19th-century Italianate-style
building opened in
1883 and is the oldest masonry
theatre in New Zealand. It was
badly damaged in the February
22, 2011 earthquake, with the
auditorium and rear section
demolished in 2015 due to safety
concerns.
ECan bought the category 1
heritage building in 2020 on an
‘as is, where is’ basis, then set
plans in motion to restore it.
“Clearly since those purchases
were made, there’s been a significant
change in the economy.
We’ve had Covid-19 and the way
in which the council is working
has changed,” Southwell said.
ECan issued an ‘Invitation
to Participate’ notice on the
Government Electronic Tenders
Service last year.
This invited interested parties
EXTERIOR: All exterior strengthening work has now been
completed, after the shipping containers supporting the
facade were removed in January.
PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
to be involved in a competitive
dialogue process to develop
two parcels of land the regional
council owns – one at the corner
of Tuam St and Manchester St
(where the remains of the Odeon
Theatre are situated), and the
other in St Asaph St, south of the
ECan building.
“Council is keen to have some
say in what that development
might be. We’re very keen to see
the Odeon Theatre and the surroundings
put back into effective
use,” Southwell said.
Taggers and rough sleepers
have vandalised the building for
more than a decade.
“The current condition is
in need of some TLC. All that
remains is the entrance and the
staircase, and therefore, ideally,
some development that incorporates
those in the appropriate
manner would be extremely
pleasing to see recreated on this
site.
“Staff are currently considering
the submitted proposals, with
the aim of getting them ready to
take to the council for voting.”
He hoped a favourable outcome
would finally allow the
iconic building to return to its
former glory.
Veteran ploughman calls it a day
after decades of straight furrows
After about 65 years
of match ploughing,
stalwart John Stalker has
ploughed his last furrow.
Reporter Daniel Alvey
caught up with him
JOHN STALKER started match
ploughing as a hobby, but it
became his lifelong passion.
The retired Greenpark
farmer has been ploughing
competitively since he was
20, has won a national title
and competed in the world
championships.
Now the 86-year-old Lincoln
resident has decided it is time to
park the tractor up.
“It’s getting harder to do as I
get older.”
Despite his advancing years,
John has lost none of his skill and
won the open plain class at the
annual Lincoln ploughing match
10 days ago. He has also won all
four local ploughing matches he
has competed in this year.
John comes from a farming
family with his father and
grandfather owning farms in
Motukarara and Greenpark
respectively, but John was the
first to take up match ploughing.
“Dad took me to the Lincoln
ploughing match while I was at
school or soon after, and I took it
up there.
“I started off in the Waihora
Young Farmers Club and they
CONCENTRATION: John Stalker focusing on keeping his furrows straight and pictured below
with some of his tractor collection.
PHOTOS: DI STALKER/DANIEL ALVEY
used to have an annual match
but that was just for their
members. So that’s where I
started off using the farm plough.
“I just did it for fun back then
and it grew from there.”
From that point on, John was a
regular competitor in ploughing
events across Canterbury.
In 1975 he took a break from
match ploughing to spend more
time on the farm, but was lured
back in about 2001.
While out judging in Waimate
one day, he noticed the vintage
class and fancied giving it a go.
John’s move to the vintage class
paid dividends, winning the 2016
national title in Sanson, near
Palmerston North.
The win earned him a ticket
to represent New Zealand at the
world ploughing match in York,
England.
“That was the only year there
was a world match for vintage
ploughing. There hadn’t been one
before and there hasn’t been one
since.”
While the results did not come
John said he was happy with his
efforts.
“I had the added complication
of using borrowed gear. But I
was pleased with my plots that I
ploughed, and my manager said I
did as good as anyone else.”
John’s wife Neroli said she
liked going out to the matches
locally.
“Some say it’s like watching
paint dry, I don’t think it is,” she
said.
After selling the farm about
12 years ago, John moved from
Greenpark to Lincoln, finding
a suitable home with the garage
space to store his 12 Massey-
Lincoln ploughing match
results
John plans to hold onto the
tractors for a while yet.
“While I can look after them,
I’ll keep them there.”
He also supplies five or six of
the tractors used in the Lincoln
Christmas Parade each year.
John said since he started
match ploughing, he has seen a
change in the competitor base
going from farmers to more
people who just compete as a
hobby.
“There are a lot of people now
who inherit a tractor from their
family and use that.”
John’s number one tip for
ploughing: “You’ve got to be able
to drive straight.”
FEATURE: Some of John’s collection escapes the shed, like
this plough in the front garden of his Lincoln home.
Emerging talent is aiming
to take Walsh’s NZ record
While the eyes of
the world are on the
Paris Olympics, a
Christchurch shot putter
is working towards
joining Tom Walsh
and Jacko Gill at the
top. Sam Coughlan
reports
Nick Palmer
became just
the third New
Zealand man, after
Tom Walsh and
Jacko Gill, to throw
over 20 metres when he
won February’s International
Track Meet in Christchurch with
20.07m.
“To be lumped in with them is
really amazing,” Palmer said.
“Twenty metres has always been
a mark in shot put that separates
people, so it’s really exciting to be
a part of that, but it’s also quite a
bit of a weight off.
“You have all this expectation
that you’re going to make it, throw
this distance, be a part of this
group, and to finally do it is pretty
awesome.”
Gill and Walsh competed in the
Olympic shot put final on Sunday
morning (NZT). Gill finished
seventh with a best throw of
21.15m, while Walsh was forced to
retire from the final due to a groin
injury suffered during his second
throw.
Palmer has lofty goals for the
future.
“One goal is to have a New
Zealand record. I want to take
that off Tom, that would be a
pretty incredible moment.”
The New Zealand record is
22.90m, set by Walsh at the 2019
world championships in Doha.
Palmer, 24, grew up in Hastings
and started athletics when he was
10, spurred on by his father.
“He tried to get my siblings into
it but they didn’t really take to it. I
was the last effort to get one of his
kids into athletics.
“I was a big kid so I was always
good at throwing and kind of
went from there.”
Palmer always took athletics
seriously.
“I was super competitive, so I
wanted to be the best at it.”
It didn’t occur to him he might
be able to make a career out of it
until he was 16.
“I went to Australia for the
national champs and I won. I
threw quite well and that kind
of took a bit of a step up in
performance and ability there.”
He moved to Christchurch
five years ago to train with
Walsh under former coach Dale
Stevenson. He is now coached by
Hayden Hall.
TEAM: Coach Hayden Hall and training partner Tom Walsh
have been crucial to Nick Palmer’s development.
“I believe most of my progress
is thanks to the fact I’m here, in
this environment (training) every
day,” Palmer said.
Before that, he’d struggled to
produce his best work.
“Through my whole age-group
career I was really talented, but I
struggled for a few years,” he said.
“What we put it down to is I
wanted to throw far so bad, I was
kind of getting in my own way.
“I was forcing things, I wasn’t
really coachable, and I kind of just
put everything on the distance
outcome.
“It took a couple of years where
I really struggled, to kind of
humble me a little bit. I went back
to the basics and that re-ignited
everything straight away.”
Hall said it had been fantastic to
watch Palmer progress in the time
they had spent together.
“He is growing, obviously not
just as an athlete, but as a person,
which is contributing pretty
hugely to his development over
the last few years.’’
Everything clicked for Palmer
in the 2023/24 season. He swept
the Classic events – winning
‘It took a couple of years where I really struggled, to kind
of humble me a little bit. I went back to the basics and
that re-ignited everything straight away.’
– Nick Palmer
the Potts Classic, Cook Classic,
Capital Classic, ITM, and the
Sir Graeme Douglas Memorial
Classic between January and
March – and added 60cm to his
personal best.
He followed that with third
place at the national championships
in Wellington, behind
Gill and Walsh, before being
selected for, and winning, the
Oceania Championships in Fiji in
June.
Palmer recently spent the three
weeks in Europe, competing
at meets in Ireland, Italy,
Switzerland and Luxembourg,
with a best throw of 19.79m at the
Morton Games in Dublin, and
a best finish of third in the Cork
City Sports competition.
By his own standards, he felt
there was room for improvement.
“I didn’t quite get the results
I was after. It’s always good
fun competing there, but I
probably went over with higher
expectations than what I ended
up with.
“That’s not necessarily a bad
thing, everything that we were
doing in training and all the
science pointed towards a big
throw coming and it didn’t
really line up, but that’s sport
sometimes.”
Palmer is also a coach at
St Andrew’s College and
Christchurch Boys’ High School,
helping the next generation
of throwers make a name for
themselves.
“I really enjoy it, I love going
back and helping people and I love
sports, so it kind of puts all my
passions together in one place.
“All the mistakes I made and
all the things I learnt when I was
younger, I can see these kids
doing as well, so it’s nice to be able
to guide them through that.”
Competing at the highest level
is a major motivation for Palmer.
“To win a medal at a major,
whether that’s world champs
or Olympics, that’s always been
the goal, and I always see myself
standing on top.
“It depends on the day, but I see
that in my future for sure, that I’m
going to be in a position to be able
to do that.”
Heavyweight LDV lacking refinement
WE START THIS week’s new
vehicle road test with a question.
Is there any sort of market here
for a huge Chinese made luxury,
all electric seven-seat people
mover costing $119,000?
Chinese automotive giant LDV
reckon there is, because that’s
exactly what they’ve launched
here in the form of the MIFA 9.
If nothing else, this imposing,
futuristic, quirky looking thing
is hard to miss. However, it is a
vehicle destined to be a rarity on
our roads, because of the cost
and being an unknown.
Many will be curious to know
what the name MIFA 9 stands
for? Well not much that makes
any sense: Maximum, Intelligent,
Friendly, Artistic and the ‘9’
stands for Premium.
The vehicle looks classy
enough with adaptive LED
headlamps up front and a fullwidth
light bar at the rear.
From every angle, this is a
big vehicle at 2-metres wide
and 5.3m long, and making a
long story longer is the MIFA
9’s 3.2m wheelbase. While we
are continuing to focus on how
this newest LDV measures up,
there is a minimum of 1.5m of
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
headroom from the base of any
of the three rows of seats to the
roof. Few people movers sold
here would better that number.
There’s also more than 900mm
of legroom for each row, except
the third that gets an even more
generous 978mm.
All the luxury stops are pulled
out for this model, and they need
to be given this is among the
most expensive Chinese-made
vehicles sold here.
There are people pampering
features everywhere.
There’s mighty full-length
electric panoramic sunroof, and
it’s a clever one. For example if
anyone in the vehicle receives
a phone call and the sunroof
happens to be open, all the
windows and the sunroof
automatically close. This shuts
out any irritating background
noises that may spoil your
important phone conversation.
How thoughtful is that!
New Zealand gets a threemodel
MIFA 9 range, each with
drive-away pricing that leads
off with the entry level Elite at
$79,990, while the mid-spec
Luxury retails for $99,990. Easily
the most expensive model, and
by a sizeable margin, is the
$119,990 Premium provided for
this road test. Interestingly we
pay much less here than they do
in Australia for this model. There
it sells for a wildly optimistic
NZ$143,000. The base Elite
version is a cleaner, roomier, and
more economical alternative to
a Kia Carnival diesel. Making
the deal that much sweeter is
a 5-year 100,000km warranty,
and with 8-years and up to
200,000km on the battery.
This luxury heavyweight of
the giant people mover brigade
possesses a remarkably good
turn of pace for such a high,
wide, long and hefty vehicle at
nearly 2.6 tonnes.
Providing the performance
fireworks is an 180kW electric
motor driving the front wheels
with three drive modes, Sport,
Normal and Eco available. That
motor manages a decent 350Nm
of torque, enough to propel it
from 0-100km/h in a sharpish
8.9 seconds.
All models are fitted with a
large 90kWh lump of a battery
pack, giving the car a real world
EV driving range of 430km,
putting it in the right ballpark for
a large electrified people mover.
Smooth strong acceleration
had the test vehicle moving
with almost indecent haste from
traffic light standing starts, much
to the surprise of the drivers it
Ratings out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 5; Build Quality
5; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 8; Value for
money: 6; Safety – Five Star ANCAP rating.
Overall points out of 10: 6.5
left in its wake. Over indulge too
many times in these moments
of driving exhilaration and the
EV range suffers. Just how much
is down to whether you adopt
a more circumspect style of
driving.
A single-speed automatic
keeps things moving along
nicely in both town and highway
driving.
The cabin is seriously large.
This means heaps of space to pile
in a whole bunch of features that
make this a road-going luxury
cruise liner. No surprises then
to find two large captain’s chairs
in the second row, with cooling
and heating, massaging function
and one-touch fully-electric
reclining.
This is a bold breakout vehicle
for LDV, who are intent on
showing the automotive world
they can design and build a top
class luxury vehicle and as a
first attempt, it shows plenty of
promise.
However, these luxuries
aren’t enough to ignore its flaws
that you don’t expect in $120K
vehicle.
These include inconsistent
build quality, variable attention
to detail and too many hard and
lower grade plastic trims and
surfaces in the cabin.
The test vehicle doesn’t miss a
safety trick, and creates a few of
its own with a fatigue reminder
system, using a camera on the
A-pillar. This will alert the driver
to things like smoking, fatigue,
viewing their phone, or not
looking at the road.
There are seven airbags, and
loads of safety systems at work
on the front line, including
autonomous emergency braking,
adaptive cruise control, forward
collision assist, and lane keep
assist.
Nothing that groundbreaking
with the suspension with an
independent set up front and
rear with a five-bar link for the
latter.
As expected, the ride is skewed
towards comfort and it delivers
that well enough over favourable
road surfaces. It’s less adept on
demanding roads where noise is
more noticeable.
Handling at moderate speeds
over undulating terrain, and
during cornering was better than
expected, but it’s a vehicle that
doesn’t enjoy being hurried along
over these sorts of roads.
Knowing and understanding
the MIFA 9’s road holding
limitations and driving to these
is one of the keys to enjoying this
unique people mover.
