Disabled dancers taking
talents to Scottish festival

A SMALL group of disabled
dancers in Christchurch are
getting ready to tell their stories
on the world stage.
High-energy group Jolt Dance
has been invited to appear at
Glasgow’s inclusive dance festival
‘Indepen-dance: Gathered
Together’ early next month.

Jolt members will present
Whakapapa – a performance
piece telling the stories of six of
the group’s dancers.
“It’s talking about individuality,
uniqueness, people’s own history,
and sharing that. Sharing that we
are stronger as a unit, as a community
by having differences and
by sharing and celebrating it.”
The trip has special meaning
for Jolt dancer Jacob Levington –
he’s looking forward to seeing his
family again.
“It’s my first time back to my
hometown. I get all my moves,
like the way I dance, from my
family piece.”
Jolt Dance was founded 23
years ago, providing a platform
for more than 200 dancers
with intellectual disabilities to
challenge stereotypes and break
down barriers through dance.
Dancers are encouraged
to choreograph their own
performances, using every space
on stage to tell their story.
Jolt, a pioneer of innovative,
inclusive dance practice will be in
hot demand in Glasgow.

suburbs
NORTHWOOD and Belfast are
now connected to Riccarton and
the central city by a continuous
7.5km of shared path cycleway.
The northern end of the $10.5
million Puari ki Pū-Harakekenui
Northern Line Cycleway
was opened on Friday by acting
mayor Pauline Cotter, who cut
the ribbon at Barnes Reserve in
Casebrook.
The occasion was marked
by members of the Waipapa
Papanui-Innes-Central and
Waimāero Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood community boards,
rūnanga representatives, pupils
from Te Kura o Matarangi Northcote
School, cycling groups, local
residents and businesses.
Downer NZ constructed the
new shared path, north and south
of Barnes Reserve, which completes
section 2. The path through
the reserve was completed in
2021 by Corde, along with the
northernmost section of the
cycleway along Main North Rd,
from the railway to Northwood
Blvd. The intersection of Styx Mill
and Main North roads was also
upgraded by Isaac Construction
as part of the works.
The new sections extend the
path along the Northern Line rail
corridor from Barnes Rd to Main
North Rd and south of Sturrocks
Rd to Tuckers Rd. From there, the
existing path takes cyclists and
pedestrians to Kilmarnock St in

Full Bellies gets grant
to help feed pupils
A GRANT OF $10,000 has
been awarded to a charity that
feeds pupils who come to school
without lunch.
Full Bellies in Burnside gives
food packages to 15 schools
around the city so children can
learn, participate and be fully
engaged.
Many of the schools are in
more affluent suburbs and miss
out on government-funded
lunches due to the service being
for lower decile schools.

vouchers.

It has also allowed Full Bellies
to add two more primary schools
to its roster.
Trust chair Lucy Boock said
it gave the grant to support the
amazing work Full Bellies does.
“Our co-op and Full Bellies
share the goal of supporting our
community and providing access
to healthy and affordable food,
and this is just one of the ways
we can make a tangible difference
to the families and kids who
need it most.”
Full Bellies began in 2022,
when founder Kate Pauling
had a coffee with a local school
principal.
They told her about the growing
number of kids in the area
who came to school without
food and were finding it hard to
engage and learn.
This led Pauling to start making
lunches to feed six pupils
each week, out of her own pocket
and in her home kitchen.
Two years later, 150 volunteers
help out by providing home
baking, prepping and packing
the lunches, or delivering them
to schools every Monday and
Wednesday.
Full Bellies spends around
$16,500 on ingredients each
month.
The lunch bags provide pupils
with enough food for a whole
day, including breakfast, morning
tea, lunch, and a little something
for after school.
Pauling said the charity is
already seeing positive results,
including a fall in the truancy
rates of pupils who now receive a
regular lunch bag.
“We believe every child
deserves to be empowered to
reach their full potential, and by
providing our food bags, we are
breaking down barriers in our
community.
“We’re really grateful for the
grant provided by Foodstuffs
South Island’s Community Trust
to allow us to continue helping
families and children in our
community that need us.”

accessible fun for all
A NEW SENSORY play space
has opened at Pioneer Recreation
and Sport Centre.
The fully-accessible play space
is the latest addition outside the
home of popular multi-sensory
facility, the Southern Centre.
“We often found people were
using the back entrance while
waiting for their session in the
Southern Centre multi-sensory
room,” says Southern Centre
team leader Linda Healion.
“We decided the space was the
perfect area to create plantings,
artwork and sensory installations
to supports visitors journey into
the Southern Centre and again as
they leave.”
The space features sensory play
elements including talk tubes
from one side of the space to the
other, a wheelchair accessible
picnic table, and planter boxes
with built in seating.
The area has colourful panes,
astroturf, and a painted mural
across the walls leading to a
tactile, sensory artwork.
“We wanted this space to
attract a diverse group of people
of all ages and abilities,” Healion
said.
“The space is open to all who
use the facility and promotes the
idea of sensory play in everyday
life, no matter who you are.”
The Southern Centre is a
multi-sensory environment for
people of all ages and abilities,
particularly those with learning
differences, cerebral palsy,
autism, disabilities, anxiety or
stress-related problems.

What’s good and bad about living

about living in Christchurch

Like: I like the bars. I
like the parks. I just like
where I live, everything
is so handy. I’m not into
the nightlife, but there’s
so much during the day.
Lots of things for me to
do.
Dislike: The rates. That’ll
be about it. There isn’t anything I don’t
like.

Like: Probably the
proximity to the beaches
and the bays and stuff like
that.
Dislike: Probably the
mental health system. It’s
pretty rough for people
here. There’s not enough
support.

Like: It’s pretty easy,
hassle free. It’s a very chill
place. I think it doesn’t
really come across like a
city, it feels more like a
small town vibe. People
are still pretty friendly,
smiley and open I think,
for the most part.

after the earthquakes. The roadworks are
definitely a bit of a downfall.

Like: What I like about
Christchurch is the
community, the people.
People are always nice,
always kind.
Dislike: One thing I
don’t like about it is the
housing. Housing is just
trash. Even looking for a
rented house, especially as a brown face,
it’s really hard to get past that. It’s been a
minute since I’ve been looking for a house.
It’s been like two years now. Other than
that, people are wonderful.

Like: I’m originally from
Malaysia but I was here
since 2000 and I went
back (home) about 2003,
then came back. I’ve
kind-of fallen in love with
New Zealand because of
the outdoors and the air
which is really fresh and
clean.
Dislike: As a foreigner here I would say
the health care. It’s a bit tricky for me
because I needed to have an appointment
to see a doctor a few months ago, but I was
unable to get it because they said they’re
not taking any new patients. So that’s a
bit frustrating. But then I think every
country has their own thing. Other than
that, I think Christchurch is coming up
again with all of the new things. It’s really
quiet compared to the early 2000s.

Christchurch is the most
kind city in New Zealand
compared to cities like

friendliness, how friendly
people are. One thing I
noticed getting here was
that people would thank
the drivers when they got
off the bus. There’s also
a sense of safety, even
relatively young children
are taking the bus by themselves and it isn’t
a big deal. It’s just relatively clean, open,
fresh air, good green spaces, happy people,
good enough weather, good place to be.
Dislike: It gets a little sleepy after dark.
Maybe not as much nightlife as some other
cities but that’s a small grievance for all the
things I do like.

are really nice. You can
walk down the streets and
say ‘hi’ and they’ll say ‘hi’
back.
Dislike: I feel like some
places are really dodgy.
Especially the bus
exchange – you see some

the Garden City?

Like: I think the
convenience of having
everything you need in
the city is definitely ideal.
That’s probably one of the
good things about it.
Dislike: What I dislike
about it is probably I find
that in smaller towns
people are generally more friendly and
greet each other more, but in the city
when you’re walking around everyone
just keeps to themselves or especially
doing (charity work) people aren’t as
friendly. When we go out to small towns,
people generally stop and talk. That’s
probably just because of the amount of
people that are in the city. There’s so
many more people, you don’t say hi to
everyone.

Like: First of all it’s
the weather and it’s the
people. Whenever I meet
someone they all are very
good. It’s good people,
to be honest, it’s really
good. That’s why I love
Christchurch.
Dislike: Christchurch is a
very good city. To be honest, it’s very good
but it’s expensive. Its cost is too expensive,
like rent cost and some groceries. It’s too
hard and finding a job is really hard for
me because I came from India and it’s too
expensive right at the moment because I
came last year so I see lots of differences
and changes here. But overall I love this
city too much.

Like: It being a garden
city and the outdoor
flow, definitely. Since the
earthquake it’s opened it
up a lot more.
Dislike: What I don’t
like is how long it’s taken
to rebuild the city, the
potholes in the roads,
the fact that they can build a big new
convention centre and the cathedral’s
not fixed when it’s a main icon of
Christchurch, and just the way the city
council seems to always make a mess and
takes forever to do anything.

ability to get around
the city really quickly.
Everything it’s got to offer
with walks and water. The
nice, relaxed atmosphere.
Dislike: Nothing, I’ve
lived here a very long time.

inner city is also really

Latest cycleway an
asset for the city

Cotter said the completion of
section 2 was an exciting milestone for
Christchurch, especially the northern
suburbs, as it provides great connectivity
to schools, shops, parks and other
cycleways.
“The project has been a long time in
the making, and the result is a wonderful
asset for the local community and an
exciting addition to the city’s growing
cycleway infrastructure, which will be
well used.”
Due to the cycleway’s location along
the rail corridor, the city council worked
with KiwiRail on the design and delivery
of the project, including renewal works
and safety upgrades at the railway level
crossings on Barnes, Sturrocks and
Tuckers roads.
The opening event coincided
with Rail Safety Week, an annual
campaign that raises awareness about
staying safe around railway tracks and
trains.
The 2.4km section 2 of the cycleway
has been fully funded by Rau Paenga, the
Crown infrastructure agency, through
its Shovel Ready programme.
“We’re very grateful for their support,
which has made this possible,” Cotter
said.

CBHS wary of dominant Nelson attack

CHRISTCHURCH Boys’
High will be hoping history
repeats itself in the Miles Toyota
Premiership final on Saturday.
Boys’ High will meet Nelson
College away in the final for the
second year in a row – won last
year by Boys’ High, 30-26.
Since then, Nelson have been
dominant – winning all 10
matches of the current season
with a bonus point, including a
30-19 win against Boys’ High in
round 1.
Boys’ High also come into
the final in good form, riding a
nine-match winning streak since
that first round loss, dispatching
traditional rivals Christ’s College
24-15 in their semi-final on
Saturday.
Head coach Rhys Archibald
said the threat posed by Nelson
could not be understated.
“It’s a mammoth challenge.
The guys are up for it, and I’m
looking forward to going up there
and playing them again, having
another crack at them. But it is a
huge task,” he said.
The key, according to Archibald,
would be nullifying Nelson’s
powerful attack – they’ve averaged
44 points a game this year.
“They’ve got some real good
ball carriers in their forward pack
and some big strong boys in their
midfield,” he said.
“You’ve got to tackle. You
really do, and try and stop their

“He’s really gonna have to fire
up,” said Archibald.
He said his side had every
chance of upsetting one of the
best schoolboy teams in the
country.
“We’re probably going in
as the underdogs and that’s
understandable after Nelson’s
form this year.
