Disabled dancers taking
talents to Scottish festival
• By Geoff Sloan
A SMALL group of disabled
dancers in Christchurch are
getting ready to tell their stories
on the world stage.
High-energy group Jolt Dance
has been invited to appear at
Glasgow’s inclusive dance festival
‘Indepen-dance: Gathered
Together’ early next month.
Jolt Dance general manager
Rachel Tully said seven
Jolt members will present
Whakapapa – a performance
piece telling the stories of six of
the group’s dancers.
“It’s talking about individuality,
uniqueness, people’s own history,
and sharing that. Sharing that we
are stronger as a unit, as a community
by having differences and
by sharing and celebrating it.”
The trip has special meaning
for Jolt dancer Jacob Levington –
he’s looking forward to seeing his
family again.
“It’s my first time back to my
hometown. I get all my moves,
like the way I dance, from my
family piece.”
Jolt Dance was founded 23
years ago, providing a platform
for more than 200 dancers
with intellectual disabilities to
challenge stereotypes and break
down barriers through dance.
Dancers are encouraged
to choreograph their own
performances, using every space
on stage to tell their story.
Jolt, a pioneer of innovative,
inclusive dance practice will be in
hot demand in Glasgow.
“They’re also running a
UNIQUE: Jokani Coe, above,
and Jacob Levington tell
their stories in Jolt Dance’s
Whakapapa.
workshop to showcase Jolt’s
approach to dance and giving a
presentation about the MOVE
programme, which is where
dancers learn to be dance
teachers,” Tully said.
• Jolt Dance will perform
a special ‘pay-what-youcan’
preview of Whakapapa
at 7pm on August 20 at
confident
$14m for
bridge could
be found
• By Isabella Adams
COASTAL WARD councillor
Celeste Donovan is confident she
can get the backing of the city
council for the extra $14 million
that’s potentially needed for the
Pages Rd bridge, if a government
agency doesn’t contribute to the
project.
The design for
the bridge was
approved at a
council meeting
last week, a decision
13 years in
the making.
A timeline for
construction is
undecided.
This is due to
the city council still finalising
Celeste
Donovan
costs and awaiting approval from
New Zealand Transport Agency
Waka Kotahi for assistance in
funding the project through its
national land transport programme.
Donovan said the Government
should do its bit to contribute to
the build, which has been dubbed
as a “lifeline project” for the New
Brighton community.
“We don’t want to let Government
off the hook.
“We think it’s only right that
we get our fair share towards a
significant project like this, which
we’ve been waiting so long to
deliver in the city. We just want to
make sure that Waka Kotahi and
the Minister for Transport doesn’t
forget about the South Island.”
Surf club grant to help
solve transport issues
THE NEW BRIGHTON Surf
Lifesaving Club has been given
a $20,000 grant from the New
Zealand Community Trust to
purchase a new, purpose-built
surf-lifesaving trailer to meet the
demands of its rapidly growing
membership.
“As a club that is rebuilding its
membership base, we currently
have high levels of interest
from our members in both
lifeguarding and sports,” said
surf club chair Lachlan Hill.
“Given the location of the
club, we’re dealing with several
families that are either on, or
below the poverty line, and do
not have the ability to purchase
what is required to transport
gear to events or lifeguarding
activities.
“Having access to a new gear
trailer will advance the club
significantly to achieve our goal
to support as many lifeguards
as possible and ensuring they
continue volunteering in the
future.”
The club, established in 1910,
is the oldest surf life saving club
in the country. Its members
volunteer hundreds of hours over
the extended summer period,
dedicating their weekends to
keeping the community safe.
GROWING: A New Zealand Community Trust grant will
allow the New Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club to purchase a
The grant will help to address
“Maintaining three old
trailers was expensive and
Henry ‘Chips’ Channon: The Diaries (Volume 1)
1918-38 by Chips Channon
Born in Chicago in 1897, ‘Chips’ Channon settled in England after the Great War,
married into the immensely wealthy Guinness family, and served as Conservative MP
for Southend-on-Sea from 1935 until his death in 1958. His career was unremarkable.
His diaries are quite the opposite. Elegant, gossipy and bitchy by turns, they are the
unfettered observations of a man who went everywhere and who knew everybody.
Whether describing the antics of London society in the interwar years, or the growing
scandal surrounding his close friends Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson during the
abdication crisis, or the mood in the House of Commons in the lead up to the Munich
crisis, his sense of drama and his eye for the telling detail are unmatched.
What’s good and bad about living
Reporter Isabella Adams asks
people what they like and dislike
about living in Christchurch
Nancy McGovern, Merivale
Like: I like the bars. I
like the parks. I just like
where I live, everything
is so handy. I’m not into
the nightlife, but there’s
so much during the day.
Lots of things for me to
do.
Dislike: The rates. That’ll
be about it. There isn’t anything I don’t
like.
Paige Officer, Lyttleton
Like: Probably the
proximity to the beaches
and the bays and stuff like
that.
Dislike: Probably the
mental health system. It’s
pretty rough for people
here. There’s not enough
support.
Patrick Macauley, Central City
Like: It’s pretty easy,
hassle free. It’s a very chill
place. I think it doesn’t
really come across like a
city, it feels more like a
small town vibe. People
are still pretty friendly,
smiley and open I think,
for the most part.
Dislike: Sometimes it’s a bit too slow. I
wish the city centre just had a bit more
life to it sometimes and just more options
of things to do, particularly in the winter.
It’s a great summer city but in the winter
everything’s kind of like “what do you do
in the winter?”
Samuel Johnson, Bromley
Like: I like the garden
city aspect of it all. How
there’s trees and changes
with the seasons, the hill
walks, things like that.
Dislike: Drivers’ reaction
time. When a traffic light
goes from red to green,
it seems to take a minute
just to get off the line.
Brooke Adams, Lyttleton
Like: Probably the fact
that we still have big
botanical gardens to
walk around. The art – I
like the art scene here.
And just the fact that it’s
busy and there’s always
something going on.
Dislike: The wind. It’s
cold.
Josie Pile, Huntsbury
Like: I love the fact
that you can be in the
mountains and in the
ocean in the same day. It’s
just a nice atmosphere,
it’s not too busy. Enough
kind of hustle and bustle.
And I like the new layout,
it’s really cool, I really
enjoy it.
Dislike: Probably just all the roadworks,
to be honest. Very standard answer, but
we kind-of just seem to be rebuilding
after the earthquakes. The roadworks are
definitely a bit of a downfall.
Temz Tevez, Redwood
Like: What I like about
Christchurch is the
community, the people.
People are always nice,
always kind.
Dislike: One thing I
don’t like about it is the
housing. Housing is just
trash. Even looking for a
rented house, especially as a brown face,
it’s really hard to get past that. It’s been a
minute since I’ve been looking for a house.
It’s been like two years now. Other than
that, people are wonderful.
Syahazzarena Zakaria, Hornby
Like: I’m originally from
Malaysia but I was here
since 2000 and I went
back (home) about 2003,
then came back. I’ve
kind-of fallen in love with
New Zealand because of
the outdoors and the air
which is really fresh and
clean.
Dislike: As a foreigner here I would say
the health care. It’s a bit tricky for me
because I needed to have an appointment
to see a doctor a few months ago, but I was
unable to get it because they said they’re
not taking any new patients. So that’s a
bit frustrating. But then I think every
country has their own thing. Other than
that, I think Christchurch is coming up
again with all of the new things. It’s really
quiet compared to the early 2000s.
Poni Sua, Redwood
Like: I like when you meet
the right people, you meet
the right people.
Dislike: When you meet
the wrong people. I think
Christchurch is the most
kind city in New Zealand
compared to cities like
Wellington and Auckland.
Austin Bowen, Central City
Like: I like the
friendliness, how friendly
people are. One thing I
noticed getting here was
that people would thank
the drivers when they got
off the bus. There’s also
a sense of safety, even
relatively young children
are taking the bus by themselves and it isn’t
a big deal. It’s just relatively clean, open,
fresh air, good green spaces, happy people,
good enough weather, good place to be.
Dislike: It gets a little sleepy after dark.
Maybe not as much nightlife as some other
cities but that’s a small grievance for all the
things I do like.
Yu Ying Yew, Halswell
Like: I feel like the people
are really nice. You can
walk down the streets and
say ‘hi’ and they’ll say ‘hi’
back.
Dislike: I feel like some
places are really dodgy.
Especially the bus
exchange – you see some
weird people and interesting people.
the Garden City?
James Jensen, Wigram
Like: I think the
convenience of having
everything you need in
the city is definitely ideal.
That’s probably one of the
good things about it.
Dislike: What I dislike
about it is probably I find
that in smaller towns
people are generally more friendly and
greet each other more, but in the city
when you’re walking around everyone
just keeps to themselves or especially
doing (charity work) people aren’t as
friendly. When we go out to small towns,
people generally stop and talk. That’s
probably just because of the amount of
people that are in the city. There’s so
many more people, you don’t say hi to
everyone.
Sejal Sharma, Addington
Like: First of all it’s
the weather and it’s the
people. Whenever I meet
someone they all are very
good. It’s good people,
to be honest, it’s really
good. That’s why I love
Christchurch.
Dislike: Christchurch is a
very good city. To be honest, it’s very good
but it’s expensive. Its cost is too expensive,
like rent cost and some groceries. It’s too
hard and finding a job is really hard for
me because I came from India and it’s too
expensive right at the moment because I
came last year so I see lots of differences
and changes here. But overall I love this
city too much.
Jesse James Travis, Linwood
Like: It being a garden
city and the outdoor
flow, definitely. Since the
earthquake it’s opened it
up a lot more.
Dislike: What I don’t
like is how long it’s taken
to rebuild the city, the
potholes in the roads,
the fact that they can build a big new
convention centre and the cathedral’s
not fixed when it’s a main icon of
Christchurch, and just the way the city
council seems to always make a mess and
takes forever to do anything.
Leslie Marsh, Heathcote
Like: The location, the
ability to get around
the city really quickly.
Everything it’s got to offer
with walks and water. The
nice, relaxed atmosphere.
Dislike: Nothing, I’ve
lived here a very long time.
I like everything about it.
Nat Varnakomala, Ilam
Like: I really like the
whole Lyttelton bay area.
Just the people and the
views and the vibes. The
inner city is also really
great place to be with lots
of people around on a nice
Sunday.
Dislike: I don’t like some
of the architecture of the new buildings in
the city. I also wish the city wasn’t always
looking like a construction site.
LIFELINE PROJECT: Coastal Ward councillor Celeste Donovan is sure no
more delays will occur with the Pages Rd bridge project.
Commitment to bridge
• From page 1
Donovan said the city council’s
submission to NZTA includes all the
projects in its Long Term Plan they would
like assistance with funding.
Waka Kotahi will come back with its
decision in September.
If the request for help funding the
bridge gets rejected, Donovan said it will
be up to the city council to figure out next
steps.
The budget is projected to be at $65.7
million, which council has been able to
put aside.
After recent meetings, there is a chance
the budget could increase to $80 million.
This means the city council would be
seeking an extra $14.3 million to fund
the project.
Donovan assured no delays will occur,
even if the funding request is denied.
“We can’t afford any further delays
which is why we’ve continued with the
project regardless of confirmation of
funding.
“Alongside the work that falls back to
the central government, we’ll be continuing
to work on the detail design and other
elements of the project.”
Donovan believes the city council will
step up if required.
“I think that council’s shown a clear
commitment to the project.
“I don’t have a crystal ball but I have
every confidence that council will
continue to do the right thing.”
Playground gets new shade sails and tables
COMMUNITY feedback has
led to new shade sails and
picnic tables being installed
at New Brighton Beachside
Playground.
The shade sails and picnic
tables were put in last week, and
will offer much-needed relief
during the hot months ahead.
The two shade sails cost
GAME CHANGER: New
shade sails and picnic
tables have been installed
at New Brighton Beachside
Playground.
$20,000 and the two picnic tables
$12,000 – a total of $32,000.
Funding came from a
$500,000 grant given to the
community board through
the Better Off support
funding package, where
central government helps to
fund projects that prioritise
community needs.
Coastal Ward councillor
Celeste Donovan advocated for
the Waitai Coastal-Burwood-
Linwood Community Board to
fund the items.
Donovan said the idea was in
response to community feedback
about limited seating and
shade at the playground.
“The community asked, and
we listened.
“These shade sails are a gamechanger,
ensuring that families
can enjoy the playground
comfortably, even on the hottest
days.”
The octagonal sunshades are
6.8m wide. Built to withstand
winds of up to 150km/h, they
will be durable through all
seasons. The picnic tables are
wheelchair accessible.
CBHS wary of dominant Nelson attack
• By Sam Coughlan
CHRISTCHURCH Boys’
High will be hoping history
repeats itself in the Miles Toyota
Premiership final on Saturday.
Boys’ High will meet Nelson
College away in the final for the
second year in a row – won last
year by Boys’ High, 30-26.
Since then, Nelson have been
dominant – winning all 10
matches of the current season
with a bonus point, including a
30-19 win against Boys’ High in
round 1.
Boys’ High also come into
the final in good form, riding a
nine-match winning streak since
that first round loss, dispatching
traditional rivals Christ’s College
24-15 in their semi-final on
Saturday.
Head coach Rhys Archibald
said the threat posed by Nelson
could not be understated.
“It’s a mammoth challenge.
The guys are up for it, and I’m
looking forward to going up there
and playing them again, having
another crack at them. But it is a
huge task,” he said.
The key, according to Archibald,
would be nullifying Nelson’s
powerful attack – they’ve averaged
44 points a game this year.
“They’ve got some real good
ball carriers in their forward pack
and some big strong boys in their
midfield,” he said.
“You’ve got to tackle. You
really do, and try and stop their
Seven of the Boys’ High team
that started against Christ’s
College were returning players
from last year’s win. Archibald
said he would look to those
players to stand up.
“Our hooker James Findlay, our
captain, every week he tops the
stats with the amount of carries
and tackles and rucks.
“Guys like Will Haig, our
blinder up there (in the final) last
year.
Fullback Ollie Singleton will
move to centre for the final after
Connor Hutchings broke his
hand against Christ’s.
“He’s really gonna have to fire
up,” said Archibald.
He said his side had every
chance of upsetting one of the
best schoolboy teams in the
country.
“We’re probably going in
as the underdogs and that’s
understandable after Nelson’s
form this year.
Celebrate the goodness of grapefruit
Embrace grapefruit’s
bite and savour
the sour, Penelope
Maguire suggests
Reasonably controversial I know,
since not everyone is a fan of
grapefruit, but as we get deeper
into the winter months, I look
forward to grapefruit season and
start to crave the bitter, sour,
citrusy freshness of this fruit.
Grapefruit shortcake
Very easy to make and whip up,
this shortcake base can also be
used with any other fresh, raw
seasonal fruit (gooseberries,
apricots or frozen berries are
particularly good) in place of the
grapefruit curd and is a great
one to have in your repertoire.
Follow the steps as below but
put the raw fruit directly on the
uncooked base, then top with
the remaining pastry and bake
at 180 for about 30-35 minutes
until browned on top.
Ingredients:
For the pastry:
180g butter, softened
180g (just under 1 cup) sugar
1 large egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
250g (2 cups) plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
Zest of 1 grapefruit
For the grapefruit curd:
200g (1 cup) sugar
30g flour (¼ cup)
3 eggs
Zest of 1 grapefruit
Juice of 2 large grapefruit
and ½ lemon
Method:
• Preheat the oven to 180°C
and grease a medium baking
tin, cake tin, or tart tin ( I use a
deep 25cm round tart tin) lining
it with parchment paper.
• In a mixing bowl with the
paddle attachment, cream
together the softened butter and
sugar until light and fluffy.
• Add the egg and vanilla
extract to the butter mixture,
and continue to beat for about 5
minutes until well combined.
• Sift the flour and baking
powder together and gradually
incorporate it into the butter
mixture.
Spread about two-thirds of
the mixture into the prepared
baking tin with clean hands,
creating an even base and try to
bring the pastry up the sides of
the tin.
• Keep the remaining pastry
aside. Bake in the oven for
20 minutes til just starting
to brown. Lower the oven to
160°C.
• While the base is baking,
prepare the grapefruit curd.
In a mixing bowl with the whisk
attachment, stir the flour and
sugar together, add the eggs,
grapefruit and lemon juice and
whisk on high speed until very
smooth.
• Once the base is slightly
browned, take it out of the oven
and carefully pour over the
grapefruit curd.
(Don’t forget to turn the
temperature down to 160°C.)
• Take small pieces of the
remaining pastry and drop
them over the grapefruit
mixture, creating a rustic top
crust (don’t worry if it sinks into
the grapefruit curd).
• Bake in the oven for 20-25
minutes, til the curd is mostly
set but with a slight jiggle to it.
You might need to cook a little
longer.
• Once baked, remove from the
oven and allow it to cool in the
tin completely (it will continue
setting as it cools).
• Serve the grapefruit shortcake
chilled or at room temperature
and dusted with icing sugar. It
can be enjoyed on its own or
with a dollop of whipped cream
or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Yum!
Grapefruit, rosemary,
almond and marmalade
cake (GF)
I love almond-based cakes for
their dense crumb and heavy
texture and this cake, with
its slight bitterness from the
grapefruit and savoury notes
from the rosemary, makes a really
interesting addition to the winter
treat stash. Equally good served
as a dessert with something
creamy or as a simple and casual
afternoon tea.
This cake tends to last five days in
a cake tin or covered in the fridge.
Ingredients:
225g butter, softened
250g white sugar (1¼ cups)
Zest of 2 grapefruits
1½ tsp vanilla extract
½ tsp very finely chopped fresh
rosemary
5 eggs
140g gluten free flour (1 cup)
1 tsp baking power
1 tsp salt
180g ground almonds (1¾ cups)
2 grapefruit, very thinly sliced
(you can use the grapefruit you
have zested and take the skin off if
you prefer)
1 cup of chunky marmalade
A few sprigs of rosemary
Method:
• Preheat the oven to 160°C and
grease and line a deep 10-inch
(25cm) cake tin then lay the thinly
sliced grapefruit and rosemary
sprigs in an overlapping pattern at
the base of the cake tin. Spoon on
the marmalade and spread in an
even layer on top of the grapefruit.
Set aside while you make the
batter.
• In an electric mixer, beat the
butter, sugar, grapefruit zest,
rosemary and vanilla til pale and
thick.
• Add the eggs one at a time,
beating well after each addition.
• Add the gluten free flour, baking
powder, salt and ground almonds
and set to the lowest speed,
mixing til only just combined.
• Spoon the batter into the
prepared tin and bake for 40–50
minutes or until the centre springs
back when pressed.
• Allow to cool in the tin.
• Once cool, turn out and
display with the grapefruit layer
at the top. You may top with
cream cheese frosting or serve
as it is with yoghurt, cream or
icecream. Makes a particularly
good breakfast cake with a cup of
strong coffee.
