Special tribute ... The Hurunui District Council hopes to unveil the restored Soldiers’ Block in Hanmer Springs on Anzac Day.
Soldiers’ Block on track to open Anzac Day
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
The restoration of Hanmer Springs’
historic Soldiers’ Block is on track to
be completed in time for Anzac Day
next year.
Hurunui Mayor Marie Black says she
is excited at the prospect of unveiling
the restored building, given the
building’s history.
The Soldiers’ Block was opened in
1916 to rehabilitate soldiers returning
from World War 1, and was later used
as adrug and alcohol treatment
facility.
The site also has cultural
significance for Ngāti Kurī,with the
council working closely with Te
Rūnanga oKaikōura.
The project is part of a$3.5 million
redevelopment of the Queen Mary
Historic Reserve and includes
earthquake strengthening and
restoringthe building for public use.
‘‘There is areal sense of excitement
in the community and not just in
Hanmer,’’ Mrs Black said.
‘‘People have been coming up and
asking about it at community events, so
Ithinkitisquite special from a
districtwide perspective.’’
Local firm O’Brien Construction was
granted the contract to create amulti
usecommunity space in the middleof
the building.
All going to plan, the wharenui will
be available to Ngāti Kurī to occupy by
Anzac Day, and the two octagons will
be ready to use, but not fitted out.
Community groups in Hanmer
Springs and beyond were already
starting to thinkabout how they might
usethe space, Mrs Black said.
Hurunui District Council chief
executive Hamish Dobbie said it had
been along journey, since the
buildings were signed over to the
council in 2010.
The $3.5 million project is being
funded by aLotteries grant, $1.5
million from the Government’s Better
Off funding, development
contributions and agrantfrom the
council’s Earthquake Prone Buildings
Fund.
A2022 report, prepared as part of a
concept plan developed by Weta
Workshop, of Wellington, says Hanmer
Springs was known as Te Whaka takaka
otekarehu oteahi aTamatea (the
resting place of the embers of the fires
of Tamatea).
The thermal reserve was recognised
as aplace of regeneration and healing,
making it asacred place for Ngāti Kurī.
Stage two of the project involves
turning the two Soldiers’ Block
octagons into museum spaces to
recognise the site’s heritage.
It will require the community to
raise afurther $6 million, the council’s
chief strategy and community officer
Judith Batchelor said.
‘‘The vision is to potentially create
something similar to the New Zealand
experience at Le Quesnoy in France.’’
Staff plan to bring areport to the
council later this month to ask for
funding, in the form of aloan to be paid
off through fundraising, and approval
to establish acommunity trust.
The council is also proposing to
build anew sports pavilion on the site
and has budgeted $400,000 in the Long
Term Plan.
Around ahundred metal detectorists
from across New Zealand descended
on aNorth Canterburyfarm recently,
aiming to match their skills against the
bestinthe country.
Organisersofthe National Detecting
Rally buried coins and tokens around
the Loburn farm, with detectorists
challenged with trying to find the
hidden items and win aprize. Coorganiser
Chris ‘Chrispy' Manning says
the event was more about getting
together, and putting faces to names.
‘‘We all contact each other on
facebook and forums like that, so it's
justagood chance foreverybody to
catch up and say gidday.’’
It was the first time in eight years the
annual event's been held in the South
Island.
‘Chrispy' says he began detecting 20
years ago, and reckons the unusual
hobby has become alot morepopular
since then.
‘‘It's that whole allureofwhat's in the
next hole, what's this beep going to be?
‘‘And you think it's going to be
somethingawesome, and then out pops
an old can or apull tab or something,
which is the absolute bane of a
detectorists life.’’
He says any rubbish found is disposed
of properly, and insists amateur
detectorists are careful to leave things
the way they found them.
‘‘The main focus on metal detecting is
saving history.
‘‘It's moreabout finding the old stuff
Schoolpantryreceive boost
North Canterbury school, View Hill,
has been given abig boost to its Pātaka
Kai or school pantry programme thanks
to the Foodstuffs South Island
Community Trust.
The $3000 grant will provide the
school with the resources it needs to
build its school pantry initiative.
This includes funding for gardening
materials and the creation of an
outdoor pantry for easy access to fresh
produce.
The school pantry will serve both the
school,and the wider community,
maintained by regular inschool
gardening by the students as well as a
GardentoTable programme.
View Hill School parent and
fundraising representative, Angelina
says the initiative will provide a
helping hand to familiesinthe
community who may need it.
‘‘The grant allows us to buy atunnel
house giving us additional space for our
students to grow more vegetables as
well as the ability to grow yearround,’’
she says.
‘‘The programme is run by one of our
fantastic teachers and gives the
students an opportunity to spend time
outside and learn about things like
cooking and sustainability through
hands on experiences.’’
Playing akey role in securing this
grant for View Hill School was
PAK‘nSAVE Rangiora, alocally owned
and operated store under the
Foodstuffs South Island cooperative.
JamesFlanagan, owneroperator of
PAK‘nSAVE Rangiora says the
Community Trust is something close to
his heart.
‘‘Catherine and Ihavebeen donating
to the Community Trust since we
purchasedour first supermarket 12
years ago.
‘‘It’s just the right thing to do in terms
of engaging with the wider coop, and
getting support to those in the
community that need it,’’ James says.
Angelina says they are appreciative
of the support of James and the
Community Trust for the grant.
‘‘Being asmall, rural school, these
grants make ahuge difference.
‘‘Without them, we wouldn't be able to
offer cool programmes, like the school
pantry to our students,’’ Angelina says.
The Foodstuffs South Island
Community Trust was created to
support the South Island and create
successful communities.
It prioritises projects and
organisations that are aligned with its
social promises of enabling people
access to healthy food, and supporting
the South Island community to thrive as
well as contributing to individuals
achieving meaningful work.
An attempt to steal acommunity
Damage to the vehicle has left the
Community Wellbeing North
Canterbury Trust without one of its cars,
and left some of those it helps, missing
out on the support the organisation
offers.
Awindow was smashed on August 2to
get into the vehicle where the console
and ignition were pulled apart leaving
the vehicle out of action.
Deirdre Ryan, general manager of the
trust says the loss of the vehicle takes
the organisation away from its core work
of helping others.
The Community Wellbeing team are
on the road daily visiting families and
schools across North Canterbury,
providing free mental health and
wellbeing services for tamariki,
rangatahi and whānau.
‘‘We cover alot of kms every week,
traversing the length and breadth of the
and attempted thefts like this makes it
even harder for them ‘‘as we have to find
Library site preserves memories
By SHELLEY TOPP
The Waimakariri community is being
invited to share its experience of life in
the district on aWaimakariri Libraries
website.
Waimakariri Heritage, which was
launched in July last year, allows
anyone to browse the content, but also
create an account and contribute
memories of their own.
They can do this in avariety of ways,
assistant librarian: local history and
heritage Sally O'Connell says.
The aim of the website is for it to
represent all of the Waimakariri
District, with content from the arts and
cultural groups, sports and new
migrants, museums and historical
groups, towns and rural areas, showing
what everyday life is like in the
district.
‘‘We would love to put acall out to
the community for photos,
memorabilia, programmes and stories
to contribute,’’ Sally says.
‘‘Everyone has astory to share.
‘‘We would love to hear from you. ‘‘
Waimakariri Heritage is a
replacement for Kete, acommunitybuilt
digital library of cultural and
heritage resources, with support from
the National Library of New Zealand
and the Aotearoa Peoples Network
Kaharoa.
Kete was closed in 2021 when the
National Library of New Zealand said
they would no longer host it, so district
libraries were given the opportunity to
create their own new resource.
‘‘This was an opportunity to look at
new platforms,’’ Sally says.
‘‘We started with 528 images, 81
documents, two sound recordings and
one video, that were transferred from
Kete.’’
Waimakariri Heritage now has
nearly 1000 items including photos,
sound recordings, videos and text
books on the history of the
Waimakariri District.
The contributions have come from
collaborations with Waimakariri’s
museums, community groups, schools
and individuals.
Sally’s favourite website feature is
the Browse by Location option.
‘‘Driven by Google Maps, it shows the
coverage across the Waimakariri
District. Each item is pinned on the
map and you can select apin to lead
you directly to the item.
‘‘The site also utilises Google Street
view, so you can look at an image and
compare the historic view with today’s
view —avery powerful tool, especially
for showing young people how familiar
sites have changed over time.’’
The website is awelldocumented
research tool with the four main
search categories —Land &Water,
People, Places and Surprise Me.
The hope is that the community will
become enthusiastic supporters of the
website by adding their stories, photos
and videos to it so that it can provide
valuable heritage information for
generations to come.
Kit and caboodle
at Waipara show
By JOHN COSGROVE
To celebrate 30 years of shows, the
Hurunui Theatre Group (HTG) are
steppingout of theircomfort zone to
perform ‘‘The Full Monty’’.
It hopes the curiosity factor will
help entice patrons to fill the
Waipara Memorial Hall for the eight
shows starting on August 22. and
running until August 31.
Director Charlotte Campbell says
‘‘The Full Monty’’ is much more than
avehicle for average blokes to get
their kit off on stage.
Waimakariri actor Scott Morrow is
the lead —Jerry —for the show, and
admits he was abit anxious about the
role to start with when he was offered
it, but now loves playing the man
about the town character.
‘‘We all haven’t got great bodies
just like the stars of the movie, and
it’s not like aladies night.
‘‘Instead it’s alovely, fun story
about agroup of blokes making the
most of what they have in very trying
times.’’
Based on the hit 1997 film and
Broadway musical of the same name,
it reflects the challenges of postindustrial
Britain, whether caused
by shutting down coal mines in Wales
(where the idea was conceived) or
closing steel mills in Sheffield
(where the movie is set).
Aswith the movie, the musical uses
comedy to touch on serious subjects
such as unemployment, fathers'
rights, depression,homosexuality,
body image, working class culture
and suicide.
Director Charlotte Campbell
brought together acast with awide
range of experience, as is typical of
grassroots theatre, and the finished
product is sure to be memorable.
The HTG was founded in 1993 by
the Glenmark Lions, when it created
avariety show as apickmeup for the
community following atrying winter.
Former group president Dave
Nicholls says through the
subsequent years the wide variety of
shows have been aregular fixture,
entertaining and continuing, it is
hoped, to lift the spirits of the
community.
Early shows were directed by
talented locals before the decision
was made to grow the skill base by
bringing in outside directors.
This began along association with
the Court Theatre, Riccarton Players
and North Canterbury Musical
Society.
Memorable shows for the HTG over
the years include ‘‘Grease,’’
‘‘Dracular Spectacula,’’ ‘‘Little Shop
of Horrors’’ and ‘‘Calamity Jane.’’
‘‘The Full Monty’’ the Broadway
Musical. Book by Terrance McNally,
Music &Lyrics by David Yazbek.
Based on the 1997 Motion Picture
released by Fox Searchlight Pictures
and written by Simon Beaufoy,
Bringing alittle joy to the terminally ill
By JOHN COSGROVE
As atenyearold, David Britten
of Kairaki Beach saw Darth
Vader on the big screen for the
first time.
It affected him so much that 47
years later, the actor still plays
the iconic Star Wars screen
character as he brings joy to
terminally ill patients of all ages.
‘‘A lady in her 70s was amajor
fan. She had planned her funeral
right down to smallestdetail for
athe Star Warsthemed farewell.
‘‘Her family invited me to see
her shortly before she died, and
when Iwent into the room
dressed up as Vader, she had a
huge grin ear to ear on her face.
‘‘We chatted about how much
of afan she was, then Ileft and
she passed shortly after.
‘‘It was so emotional but a
great honour to make her happy
at the end,’’ David said.
His first call to help came one
night when afamily contacted
him and asked if he could come
down to visit their terminally ill
son.
‘‘Tomorrow?’’ inquired David.
‘‘No, now please,’’ they replied.
‘‘I went down knowing he only
had hours to live.
‘‘It was avery intense session
because nothing prepared me
for it. But the little boy was such
abig fan.
‘‘He was so sick he could only
whisper.
‘‘We had this wonderful
conversation about his passion
for Darth Vader.
‘I left him with one of my
replica gloves as amemory. They
buried it with him.’’
Four times David has been
asked to visit people at theend
of their lives.
‘‘If Ican help in some way then
that’s what Ilove doing.’’
The most noted point about his
portrayal of Darth Vader is that
he does it for free.
‘‘If Ican make adifference and
put asmile on someone's face,
then that’s all Ineed.
‘‘I have trained myself over the
last 17 years to become the
character, and it takes every
ounce of that training to remain
in character as Ilisten to the last
words of ayoung person with
only afew hours left.’’
David said he was bullied at
school and after watching Star
Wars he became obsessed with
Darth Vader.
‘‘Here was aguy who stood up
to everyone. He became my
inspiration.’’
David has spent almost $14,000
assembling the costume,
locating many rare and unique
elements of it from around the
world.
He said it was avery
physically demanding costume
to wear at events, such as Santa
parades and Armageddon
shows.
‘‘It’s heavy, weighing about 26
kilos.
‘‘It’s abeast to wear when it’s
hot outside.’’
He once collapsed from heat
exhaustion at aNew Brighton
parade so he doesn’t do them
any more.
‘‘I had to stop attending shows
because overexcited fans
started damaging the suit. But
now Ihave found my calling —
helping others.’’
The unemployed actor said it
was his passion now.
He said when he started
wearing the costume, people
quickly recognised the
character.
‘‘Surprisingly people flock to
meet and be photographed
beside the most famous movie
bad guy.
‘‘Put me next to someone
dressed as Han Solo and they all
come over to me.’’
Now David spends his days
helping others.
He often receives requests for
video messages in costume for
sick children or fans in America,
and he said he is always
available for those who need
him.
‘‘Recently Iwas making
preparations for my mother's
funeral when the undertaker
inquired if Iwas available for
themed funerals. Isaid yes, even
if it is simply greeting guests or
handing out programs for fans of
the popular film franchise.’’
Regionalfund helps
maximisetourism
It was aprivilege as Minister for Tourism
and Hospitality to announce the Regional
Events Promotion Fund, which is part of
the Government’s 100point economic
plan.
The fund will help maximise the value of
tourism, which remains one of New
Zealand’s top export earners.
As MP for Waimakariri, the
announcement was particularly exciting,
with four local events around the
electorate set to receiveafunding boost.
This will attractmore visitors to the
region, in particular domestic tourists
from around the country.
Waimakariri events benefittingfrom this
funding are the Muddy Good Run in
Mandeville, the OxMan triathlon at
Eyrewell, the Canterbury Half Marathon
in Pegasus, and the Bridge to Bridge
mountain bike event between the
Waimakariri Gorge bridge and the State
Highway One bridge.
Iknow many of you have participated in
one or more of these events.
Ialso know they already attract good
local and domestic visitor numbers and
have proven themselves aswellorganised
and popular events on the sporting
calendar, so Ilook forward to seeing their
success continue to grow with this funding.
fantastic opportunities for New
This investment will enhance visitation
to the region throughout the year,
Delivery of water
You may have seen some reports in the
news in the past week regarding Three
Waters.
North Canterburycouncils are
collaborating on what the future for
Three Waters might look like when
central government passes legislation
later this year.
Local Water Done Well, is central
government’s new policy for water
reform, and will require changes to the
structure of water services and
provision nationwide.
Once the legislationpasses later this
year, each council will have 12 months to
create aWater Services Delivery Plan
that details how they will meet higher
standards, investment, and regulations.
The new policy allows for local
solutions and arrangements to be made
to address water infrastructure needs
while importantly, maintaining local
ownership and representation.
For these reasons Hurunui, Kaikōura,
and WaimakaririDistrict councils have
been working with the Department of
Internal Affairs (DIA) and looking at
options ahead of time to see what could
achieve these outcomes, while still
having tangible local say about future
direction and investment.
Our three councils have along history
of working together and we are all
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Toxic chemicals in waterways
Dear Editor,
On June6,2024, I, alocal
resident, went to alocal fishing
spot on the Cam River and
discoveredthat the aquatic plant
that is ever present had been
burnt off down to the plant’s root
system —toall intents and
purposesithas disappeared.
It is largely no longer
appearing in the river from 400
metres below Bramley’s Bridge
to the mouth of the Cam at the
Kaiapoi River.
IcontactedECan, the river
authority, who sent out an
engineerwho stated that a
chemicalhad been used to
remove the aquatic plant.
This issue of extreme plant
poisoning in our waterways has
Focus on
Waimakariri
with Mayor Dan Gordon
been occurring since 2012, which
has led to areduction and severe
degradation of the micro
biodiversity in our local rivers.
This reduces the macro
invertebrates, birdlife, fish and
native waterfowl.
It is believed that these poisons
that are added to the waterways
have never been publicly
notified as is required by law.
This then endangers animals
and the public health of those
who may use the waters. Why are
these chemicals not publicly
notified?
If this situation continues
nothing will remain of any
biodiversity in and around our
waterways. In time fish life will
cease to exist in our rivers.
on the work undertaken by C4LD.
C4LD always acknowledged that
higher regulations and standards are
required and coming, and that there is a
need for different models to fund future
further investment in Three Waters.
This can be achieved while
maintaining local ownership,
accountability to the community,
alignment with wider council
projections and planning.
There are currently no decisions
about what form or shape the North
Canterbury collaboration may take.
We’re still in the early stages of looking
at our Water Services Delivery Plan. But
it’s important to us that everyone is kept
up to date along the journey.
Once functional models are
identified, councils will fully consult
with our communities before making
any decisions on future options like we
have all the way through on Three
Waters. This is likely to take place early
2025. Iwelcome contact from anyone
Works, Woollen Mill, and North
Canterbury Fellmongery, all
disposed of very toxic chemical
waste into the Kaiapoi River
which killed off fish and other
wildlife, but within three months
all wildlife had revived back to
normal —not so today.
Today’s chemical usage in our
rivers guarantees that all
biodiversity will never recover,
and will steadily degrade. Many
councils and ECan do not want to
seriously debate or consider this
issue. In the past the aquatic
plants were kept under control
using weed cutters and
draglines. Toxic chemicals were
not used, and the healthy
biodiversity remained.
View Hill star gazing
festivalabig success
ByJOHN COSGROVE
The community surrounding the View
Hill School near Oxford, took back the
night when they hosted astar gazing
festival onsite in early August.
View Hill School principal Pax
O'Dowd says they had areally good fun
night with over 300 people attending the
evening, held in collaboration with
Oxford Dark Sky, the University of
Canterbury and the Royal Astronomical
Society of New Zealand.
‘‘The night sky opened up for us at the
right time.
‘‘We had been very nervous about the
clouds all week before it, but when it
started we had awonderful night sky to
look up at.
‘‘The weather gods played ball and
everyone had agood time despite it
being abit chilly.’’
He says people from throughout the
district came out and braved the icy
conditions to star gaze, including a
number of international visitors from
China, who were amazed at the clarity of
the night sky here in New Zealand
compared to their own view back home
in the cities in China.
Mr O’Dowd says they held the open
night as an opportunity to celebrate and
showcase the Dark Sky honour Oxford
had recently been awarded.
‘‘The University of Canterbury team
had all their gear lined up for visitors to
experience aunique view of the night
sky overhead.
‘‘Members of the Royal Astronomical
Society of New Zealand, and Oxford
Dark Sky, were also on hand to talk
about their passion for the night sky.
‘‘It all served to raise awareness for
the Dark Sky programme and also give
the community achance to connect with
the programme.’’
Mr O‘‘Dowd says for afirst time event
it was pretty cool. and everyone enjoyed
the experiences offered by the various
groups.
The school hopes to make the ‘‘Take
back the night’’ dark skies festival an
annual event with more on offer next
year.
North Brook Trail scheme gets thumbs up
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Anew walking trail showcasing
sustainable farming in North
Canterbury has been given the go ahead.
The Waimakariri District Council has
approved the acquisition of asix metre
wide strip through farmland alongside
the North Brook Stream, near Rangiora,
for $1.
The project is being led by the
Waimakariri Landcare Trust, agroup of
local farmers focusing on sustainability,
which is working alongside the
landowning Spark family and the
council.
The trust is planning to build a1.88km
trail in three stages.
Mayor Dan Gordon said he is pleased
the project is finally going ahead.
‘‘The Spark family has given alot to
the community over the over the years
and that includes developing the
Northbrook Museum and tractor
collection.’’
Waimakariri Landcare Trust coordinator
Erin Harvie said the trust first
approached the council in 2021 and is
pleased to be able to move forward.
‘‘It is agreat proposal and it fits nicely
with the long term planning for the area.
‘‘We have been working on it in the
background with the support of the
council and it will be lovely when it is up
and running.’’
She said the trust will check in with
the Spark family once calving is
finished, before seeking some updated
quotes and applying for grants.
Some planting had already been
completed along the stream, with more
planned as the trail develops.
Stage one will develop a1km stretch
of the trail between Marsh and Boys
Roads, while stage two will complete
another 800 metres from Boys Road to
the North Brook Wetland.
The final stage of 80 metres will be at
Marsh Road, with cyclists and walkers
having the option of continuing along
Marsh Road to connect with the
proposed Arohatia te Awa Trail, which
will follow the Ruataniwha Cam River
from Kaiapoi and Rangiora.
Information boards will be stationed
along the trail to tell the history of the
area and promote sustainable farming
practices.
Landowner Geoff Spark said his
family is pleased to support the trail as
part of the wider Arohatia te Awa Trail.
‘‘We see this as an exciting and
positive community project that will
promote active travel between the two
towns.
‘‘The North Brook Stream, which
flows through our family farm, is alovely
water way and this project will give
access to the public so everyone has the
opportunity to enjoy it.’’
The council has approved funding of
up to $30,000 from the Arohatia te Awa
fund to pay for surveying and legal costs
and will be responsible for the
maintenance of stage one of the trail,
once complete.
The timing of the trail’s development
will depend on funding.
Trapping programme to be expanded
9
By SHELLEY TOPP
The successful trapping programme at
Silverstream Reserve in Clarkville is
being expanded to include neighbours
properties.
The aim of expanding the programme,
which is led by Joan Whillans and has
removed 2500 pests from the reserve in
five years, is to catch predators before they
enter the area.
‘‘In June the Silverstream Reserve
Advisory group supported the idea to work
with neighboursbordering the reserve to
try and reduce this flow of animals and we
are now making astart on it,’’ Pest Free
Waimakariri ranger Richard Chambers
says.
‘‘Prior to this we had 810 properties
involved in the trapping but we are
looking to get as many neighbours
trapping as possible.’’
Joan’s team of volunteer trappers can
provide neighbours interested in taking
part in the programme with four free rat
traps, supplied by Pest Free Waimakariri,
to each property, and possum traps will be
rotated among trappers as needed.
‘‘Collectively this adds up to alot of traps
but we will carry out monitoring as we go
to see if more are needed,’’ Richard says.
Residents taking part in the programme
will be asked to check their traps and
report what they are catching to Joan or
Richard.
‘‘This keeps us all in touch and we can
build apicture of how we are succeeding,’’
Richard says. ‘‘The Silverstream trapping
group have been doing agreat job over the
years at keeping pests down so the birds
can flourish in the reserve.’’
The hope is extending the area of
trapping will add to that success, and
encourage even more native birds to make
their home at the reserve. Pest Free
Waimakariri has received funding from
the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board,
and some of this money will be used to
fund the expanded Silverstream project.
Trapped pests can be disposed of on the
property they are caught on. ‘‘Burying is
best but small animals will decompose
quickly if discarded away from houses,’’
Richard says.
No poison is used so scavenging by other
animals will not be aproblem.
Any neighbours of the Reserve, who
would like to become involved, should
contact Joan at silverstream.
Rural NZ important
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
JOHN &BEV
Ryman Residents
The health needs of rural communities
must not be forgotten amid the latest
healthcare sector changes, North
Canterbury'smayors say.
Te Whatu Ora Health NZ recently
announced the appointment of four
regional deputy executive directors,
including one based in Christchurch, in
amove back towards regional decision
making.
Hurunui Mayor Marie Black and
Waimakariri mayor Dan Gordon have
been calling for local accountability
since district health boards were
replaced by Health NZ two years ago.
Martin Keogh has been appointed
deputy executive director for the South
Island.
Mrs Black said while she welcomed
some decision making closer to home,
she questioned how much
understanding there would be of rural
community needs.
‘‘The South Island is abig area to
cover with alot of different issues and
knowing what it is actually like to
provide aservice in Cheviot, for
example, might be difficult,’’ Mrs Black
said.
‘‘Attraction and retention of staff in a
rural setting remains achallenge.
‘‘It is afairly tiresome role in arural
district, because you are always on call,
even when you are not.’’
Providing services to help older
people in their homes is more
challenging in arural community, she
said.
This is because home help services
often become ‘‘fragmented and fragile’’
due to the distances involved, Mrs Black
said.
‘‘We need to keep an eye on that and
on providing care for end of life and
respite care.’’
The use of Telehealth technology has
been talked about in the media as it is
increasingly used to cover for alack
medical professionals, particularly in
rural areas.
Hurunui Mayor ... Marie Black.
PHOTO: FILE
The increased reliance on Telehealth
might work for some people, but can be
challenging for older people, Mrs Black
said.
But rural communities had
‘‘magnificent’’ volunteers services such
as St John and Meals on Wheels, she
said.
Mr Gordon said it had been difficult to
get answers about health issues
impacting on Waimakariri residents
since district health boards were
abolished.
Appointing aSouth Islandbased
director is ‘‘a great first step’’ towards
local accountability, he said.
‘‘This is something Iadvocated for
because Iknow that having alocal voice
close to the issues is vital for our
communities.
‘‘The old DHB system was not ideal,
but at least we knew who was
accountable and who to call when issues
arose.’’
Health NZ has been contacted for
comment.
Staying connected ... Good transportation for elderly in the Waimakariri District is helping
people to access services, events and socialise.
Age-friendly survey
ahuge council asset
Having an Agefriendly Waimakariri
community plan is a‘‘huge asset’’, says
Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon.
The Waimakariri Agefriendly
Advisory Group recently completed a
community survey.
Mr Gordon says its findings will help
inform the council’s decision making
and help ensure it meets its agefriendly
commitments.
‘‘Age Friendly Waimakariri is ahuge
asset to our district and helps to keep us
informed of matters that concern our
older residents.
‘‘As aresult of this relationship, they
are able to provide excellent advice and
guidance to our council, staff and other
agencies.
‘‘Surveys such as this are so valuable
for us as decision makers.
‘‘It is always good to know what is
working well, but it is of even more
benefit to learn where more support is
needed and what needs improving.’’
The agefriendly community concept
has been developed by the World Health
Organisation and the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organisation (Unesco) to promote agefriendliness
across the globe.
The survey was adapted from a
questionnaire developed by an agefriendly
group in The Hague,
Netherlands, and adapted to suit the
Waimakariri community.
It received more than 200 responses
Topics included housing, social and
community participation, respect and
social inclusion, communication and
information, community support and
health services, outdoor spaces and
facilities, transportation and finances.
Advisory group committee member
John Mather said the group is pleased
with the results, but hopes to reach a
wider cross section next year.
‘‘Given the results of the
questionnaire, it would be reasonable to
conclude the respondents find our
Waimakariri community is reasonably
agefriendly.
‘‘This matches acommonly held and
often expressed perception that this
community is agood place in which to
retire.
‘‘There are, however, findings and
issues from the consultation that can be
improved and need to be relayed to
governance bodies and providers of
services for older people.’’
The majority of respondents said
where they live is accessible and meets
their needs, in terms of affordability,
comfort and safety.
Respondents also said they found
opportunities to meet people in their
neighbourhood, there were activities in
their community relevant to them and
information about events was
accessible.
Jane Verity ... Founder and chief executive of Dementia Care International during a
zoom call to Adriel’s community.
SparkofLife focus
at Adriel in August
The Spark of Life programme is being
celebrated at Amberley’s Adriel House
and Rest Home this month.
The programme focuses on the
connection between carers, residents
and their families.
It fosters kindness, compassion,
empathy, and respect for all, and is
Adriel’s point of difference from other
facilities providing dementiacare.
Zoom calls with Jane Verity, who
founded DementiaCare International in
1993, and is its chief executive, have
seen partners, relatives and interested
people, including families from
England, joining in sessions at the
Hurunui Library in Amberley.
Jane founded the international
organisation with the purpose of
humanising dementiacare and
promoting reaching out to those living
with dementiausing the Spark of Life
philosophy.
Adriel’s owner Mischeal McCormick
says it can be ‘‘tragic and tough’’ losing a
family member to dementia, Spark of
Life can help provide many tools to
reach out to them.
‘‘Often the first communication, or the
way you respond to people makes all the
difference to them, and it makes their
day,’’ she says.
Families, friends and the community
are also being invited to Adriel over
several afternoons, to join in activities
and programmes with residents.
Mischeal says this allows them to
experience the programmes and
activities and see residents in action.
Some of the activities will include a
gardening, apet day and an exercise
afternoon..
Those visiting can also get alittle bit of
training on the Spark of Life and how its
philosophy fits in to activities and
programmes.
Family, friends and the community
members have also been invited to liaise
with Adriel’s diversional therapist,
about aspecial outing or experience for
their loved one.
Adriel will organise and facilitate it.
This could be as simple as atrip to a
local cafe for apie and acoffee, awalk
somewhere or Fish and Chips on the
beach, says Mischeal
‘‘Doing something meaningful,
keeping it simple, and including family
and friends, can tap into resident’s long
term memory and bring out that
sparkle,’’ she says.
Jane Verity has educated thousands of
health care professionals, staff and
families in the Spark of Life Philosophy
around the world. She has authored two
books, the Art of Good Dementia Care
and How to Ignite the Spark of Life in
People with Dementia.
Older persons valued
From Page 15
The majority of respondents to the
survey felt valued as older persons and
had opportunities to interact with
other generations, but around 10
percent of respondents disagreed.
Most people said they were able to
access information and were
competent using technology, but
around onethird of respondents said
they struggled to access and read
printed and digital information.
Community support and healthcare
were generally accessible and
respondents felt care and welfare
workers are respectful.
Neighbourhoods are generally
accessible for walking frames and
wheelchairs and people are able to
access local shops, most respondents
said.
Around 20% of respondents said the
bus service did not stop near their
home, but the majority said buses were
accessible.
While the majority of respondents
said their income is sufficient to cover
their needs, around 14% indicated they
could not live well on their income.
The Waimakariri Agefriendly
Advisory Group plans to do the survey
each year to gauge how the community
is tracking against the agefriendly
Safety focus
Amonthlong road safety
campaign in the Hurunui
District resulted in 873
drivers being breathtested,
with six blowing above the
legal limit.
Sergeant Rob Irvine said
even though it was asmall
number of drivers processed
for drinkdriving, it was still
disappointing.
‘‘The message about the
dangers of drink driving is
still not reaching asmall
percentage of people,’’he
says.
The initiative involved the
Hurunui District Council,
NZ Police and the New
Zealand Transport Agency
(NZTA). They say it has led to
more awareness about drink
driving and how it affects
communities.
The June campaign
included vehicle checks,
enforcement and driver
education in Hanmer
Springs, Culverden and
Amberley across four
separatecheck points.
Sergeant Irvine applauded
local outlets from
restaurants and pubs to
sports’ club rooms, for
providing safe options for
drivers such as nonalcoholic
beverages and courtesy
vehicles. ‘‘There are a
number of options for
drivers, noone needs to
drink and then drive.’’
Sergeant Irvine said
Hurunui’s Police will
continue carrying out further
checkpoints and breath
testing every driver, no
matter what time of day or
night.
During the campaign, the
council used the tagline ‘I
want to get home safely
because…’.Hurunui Mayor,
councillors, and membersof
the Hurunui community
representingrange of ages,
shared reasons for not
drinking and driving, and
opting out of drinking on a
night out.
Family, work,
responsibilitiestothe
community, and pets were
all popular reasons.
Mrs Black says an
integrated community
approach means the voices
of friends andneighbours
can be heard, and have a
significant impact, and
influence on behavioural
change.
‘‘This commitment to
making our district safer is
important and being ‘better
together’ will create positive
outcomes,’’she says.
Council’sSafer Roads
Facilitator Emma Feathery
says the partnerships are
great tools for reducing harm
on Hurunui’sroads, and the
important message needed
to continue throughout the
year. She said numbers
showed,yet again, amultiagency
approach to road
safety achieves results and
undoubtedly reduces harm
on local roads.
Funding certainty sought
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
North Canterbury’s mayors are
calling for funding certainty for a
successful youth jobs programme
as unemployment continuesto
rise.
Kaikōura Mayor Craig Mackle
and Hurunui Mayor Marie Black
are asking the Government for a
longterm fundingcommitment
for the Mayors’ Taskforce for
Jobs programme.
The national unemployment
rate continuestoclimb, reaching
4.6 percent in the June quarter,
with young people aged 16 to
24years the hardesthit.
The Mayors’ Taskforce for Jobs
programme is funded by the
Ministry of Social Development,
with the Government providing
$18 million from 2023 to 2025.
‘‘We have funding secured
until June30next year, but not
beyond that,’’ Mr Mackle said.
‘‘I know it is hard times for the
Government, but those questions
need to be answerednow or we
risk losing our coordinators.’’
His message to the Government
is simple ‘‘Don’tleave people
hanging’’.
The Kaikōura Mayors’
Taskforce for Jobs programme
has placed 48 people in
sustainable employment in the
year to June 30, including 44
young people.
This included 16 young people
being placed in apprenticeships.
‘‘We have shown that this
works well. Ican’t think of
anythingthat gives you abigger
bang for your buck,’’ Mr Mackle
said.
Stepping up ... Kaikōura Mayor Craig Mackle (left) and the Mayors’
Taskforce for Jobs programme has been supporting Courtney Burke to step
up to be adiesel mechanic with her employer Sam Lewthwaite. PHOTO: FILE
Mrs Black said the progamme
played avaluable role in giving
young people ‘‘hope and
purpose’’.
‘‘We are in difficult times and it
is challenging for employers, but
we are fortunate to have some
brave employers who are willing
to give young people ago.
‘‘Soany financial support we
can get to keep this programme
strong and robust is vital.’’
Kaikōura Mayors’ Taskforce
for Jobs programme coordinator
Aysia McMillan said the
programme was funded over the
last 12 months for atarget of
placing38youth (16 to 24yearolds)
in employment for at least
91 days.
‘‘We keep checking in with our
youth after the 91 days, but the
requirement is to support them
through the first 91 days.
The programme is now into its
fourth year in Kaikōura.
Over that time 297 job seekers
and 87 employers have been
registered with the scheme.
Local Government New
Zealand vicepresident Campbell
Barry said the programme
demonstrated ‘‘the power of
localism’’.
Nationally 6400 young people
have been placed in employment
across 33 different communities.
While the programme is funded
until June next year, its funding
is 20% less.
The North Canterbury News, August 15, 2024
Vehicle Trust keeps people moving in NC
Residents in the Hawarden Waikari
area who do not have ready access to
public transport, have asolution just a
phone call away.
Community Vehicle Trusts provide a
dignified transport option for
residents in areas outside the urban
public transport networks.
There are 17 Trusts in Canterbury.
After apublic meeting in November
2018 to gauge interest, the Hawarden
Waikari Community Vehicle Trust was
formed in early 2019, with support from
Environment Canterbury.
Acar was purchased from the
Pleasant Point Community Vehicle
Trust with agrant from the Hawarden
Waikari Lions Club.
Volunteer drivers were called for,
and the initial group of seven has since
grown to today’s roster of 21.
The car was initially kept at aTrust
member’s property until funds were
raised to build adedicated garage at
the Waikari Health Centre in early
2023.
This was funded by the Trust, and a
generous grant from The Rata
Foundation
In 2024, with support from aLottery
Communities grant, the land between
the garage and the Heath Centre was
sealed.
The Hawarden Waikari Community
Vehicle Trust car provides an oncall
service, return or oneway, that can be
booked to take up to four people,
anywhere between Hanmer Springs
and Christchurch for medical or
business appointments, shopping,
visiting, airport transfers, or other
purposes.
Use of the community car service has
increased steadily since the first trip
in 2020.
In 2023, 92 trips were completed, and
this year the milestone 100th trip was
made in late July.
Since the service started, there have
been 345 trips taken by 377 residents.
The cost of atrip is able to be kept to
aminimum because of the relianceon
the team of volunteer drivers, with the
primary funding through Environment
Canterbury and the local rate. The
Trust is indebted to generous local
businesses and are grateful to Waikari
Auto Services, Waikari Health Centre,
Albany Insurance and the volunteer
drivers.
Trustees are focused on keeping
costs as low as possible despite
experiencing cost escalation as they
understand the value of the service to
the Hawarden Waikari community.
As the service grows, the trust is
looking to the future, including a
possible second vehicle, or
replacement one, and how to fund it.
To book aHawarden Waikari
Community Car trip, call the Waikari
Health Centre, 033144506 during
opening hours —Monday to Friday,
8.30am to 5pm.
The Trust encourages people to book
as early as possible, but does its best to
fulfil short notice bookings.
Big crowd at festival
By SHELLEY TOPP
Abig crowd attended the St Joseph’s
School'sCultural Festival in Rangiora.
The fundraiser was last held during
2019 in the school grounds, but achange
of venue was chosen for last Friday
night’s event, which was held indoors at
the Rangiora Baptist Church Hall.
The indoor venue was chosen to
remove concerns about the possibility of
cold or wet weather discouraging people
turning out. It proved agood decision as
Friday was cold and wet.
Two other schools, Rangiora New Life
and Peppertree Preschool collaborated
with St Joseph’sfor the event.
St Joseph’sSchool principal Ben
Gorman said he was overwhelmed by the
huge amount of support the event
received from the community, including
much appreciated sponsorship from
many businesses.
‘‘Basically, all our costs were covered
before we started, which was fantastic,’’
he said.
Mr Gorman believed the popularity of
Friday’s festival was mainly due to the
good food ‘‘with nothing over $5’’, and
good entertainment.
‘‘It is afamilyfriendly event,’’ he said.
‘‘People want something positive to
come to.’’
Cultural exchange
Chinese students enjoyed some local
hospitality during arecent visit to
Hurunui.
Mayor Marie Black hosted 32 students
from three schools from the Changping
district in Beijing, China, in along
awaited visit, with the help of local school
children and the Hurunui Youth Council.
‘‘Our young people were great
ambassadors for our district,’’ she says.
The Hurunui district has been working
to establish cultural exchanges for a
number of years and was about to
welcome its first visitors, when Covid
struck in March 2020.
The relationship was established eight
years ago when former Mayor Winton
Dalley led adelegation to Changping to
establish asister district relationship.
One of the goals was to create
opportunities through young people and
education to ‘‘bring the cultures closer
together’’, Mrs Black said.
The students were given aformal
welcome in the Hurunui District Council
chambers in Amberley, before heading
out for school visits at Amberley School,
Hurunui College and Amuri Area School.
They also visited the Rewi Alley
memorial bridge at Chamberlain Park
and viewed moa bones at Pyramid Valley,
cementing some existing links between
the districts.
Rewi Alley spent much of his childhood
in Amberley, attending Amberley School.
He later lived most of his adult life in
China, but never forgot his Canterbury
Hawarden golfersretain prestigious cup
ByROBYN BRISTOW
Hawarden golfing ladies have
successfully staved off challenges from
six teams in 2024 to remain the holders
of the prestigious Boyle Cupfor the
year.
It is aspecial feat, particularly as the
small North Canterbury clubisinits
centennial year.
Hawarden’s previous successful
challenge for the Boyle Cup was in 1933,
so 90 years later it is proud to have won
it again in the 20232024 year after a
successful challenge againstScargill.
It has since fended off challenges from
Russley, Hororata, Rangiora,
Templeton, Hanmer Springs and
Waimakariri.
The BoyleCup was presented to the
Christchurch Ladies Golf Club in 1914,
and is aCanterbury interclub match
challenge trophy.
It is similar to the Ranfurly Shield of
rugby as the holder has to host a
minimum of six challengesattheir
home club per year.
Clubs from all of Canterbury are
invited to challenge.Six clubs are drawn
by ballot to contest the holder of the cup.
Each team has five players who play
individual matches.
The Hawardenteam of five was not
always the same ladies,assome were
not available due to illness, travel or
other commitments.
It only had nine club members to
choose from so is incredibly proud to
win and hold the trophy after its six
challenges.
More wins for Jackson
The players had adevoted team of
caddies who helped out through the
challenges.
The team included: Erin Mulholland,
Michelle Fletcher, Nicky Matthews,
Avril Harrison, Judith Sowden, Nicky
Lang, Jill Allan, Rose Cassidy.
Celebrations for the Hawarden Golf
Club reachingthe 100 year milestone
Softball celebration
Jackson Culver, believed to be New
Zealand's youngest ever motor race
winner, has now added two more
victories to his short resume.
Both of his recent Formula First wins
came during the Manfeild Winter Series.
The 12yearold, from LoburninNorth
Canterbury, won his first raceinthe
junior singleseater category in May —a
onehour enduro.
He has now added victory in the
shorter sprint races that make up
championships.
Culver was even more delighted with
his win last weekend over Hayden Lines,
who finished third overall in the
national series last season, and only
entered the penultimate of the four
round series.
‘‘I made sure Iwas leading into
Higgins so that Icould lead down the
back straight, held the inside line so that
everyone would have to go on the outside
if they wanted to pass, kinda blocked up
into the last corner, came off good, and I
was over the line before Iknew it,’’ he
says.
But the biggest improvement for
Culver came from working hard on his
driving techniques and making sure he
got everything right from inside the car.
‘‘The infield hairpin was important.
‘‘Making sure Iwas getting to the right
braking markers, having the right
pressure on the throttle, turning in and
apexing, making sure Iwas hitting all
that so Icould get agood run outonto
the straight.’’
The preteen says he also learnt alot
from watching Lines and learning from
his rival's experience.
‘‘I followed him through practiceand
his lines were alot different.Itried
them and they're quite fast.’’
In the other two races held over the
weekend Culver finished second but
then slipped off the track into
Racing Victories ... Jackson Culver
retirement in the final race after hitting
unseen oil on the track.
At the previous round in July, Culver
took his second win and finished runnerup
in the other two races.
Competing in the winter series is solid
preparation for him to have asecond
year in the New Zealand championship
whichstarts in late October, with the
final round of the winter series at the
beginning of September.
‘‘I still need to improve more,
especially in qualifying, but through the
races now I'm pretty confident Iknow
what it takes to win more races.
The national series runs through until
Easter 2025. By then he will have turned
13 and will look to move up to the bigger,
more powerful Formula Ford cars.
Kaiapoi Softball is turning20this year
Introduction to Growing Future Farmers
By JOHN COSGROVE
Training by farmers, for farmersisthe
mantrafor the rapidly expanding
Growing FutureFarmerstraining
programme.
Looking for asustainable longterm
solution to dwindling staffing
numbers in the agricultural sector, led
anationwide group of farmersand
industryprofessionals to the
formation of the Growing Future
Farmers (GFF) programme in 2016.
It is now New Zealand’s largest
farmerled vocational workforce
training programme.
It aims to supply farmerswith
employees armed with the essential
skills needed to be workready when
they graduate.
They will then join 73 other
graduates who have already passed
through the training programme.
GFF’s chief executive officer Wendy
Paul, spoke of its history, the
importance of its vision and its large
base of industry supporters at the
Canterbury Experience Day held last
week in Rangiora.
Over 50 parents and interested
students from North and Mid
Canterbury were keen to learn more
about the opportunities offered by this
unique training scheme.
‘‘The challenge for the sheep and
beef farmersthen and now is finding
suitable workers, properly trained to
be safe and practical workers when
they come on to their farms.
‘‘In 2020 we started the formal
training programme and since then
enrolment in our twoyearlong
supported training course has gone up
1000%,’’ she said.
‘‘Students, mostly straight out of
school, spend two years working and
living on an approved farm trainers
farm, learning practical workplace
skills on the farm.’’
These skills could include shearing,
4WD training, fencing, chainsaw use,
animal health and dog training
following an initial orientation
course.
Each student lives onfarm and will
have meat supplied and aliving
allowance payment.
Supported by adiverse group of
industry, financial and academic
supporters in each of the nationwide
regions, students also have aGFF
support manager plus access to
subsided equipment, clothing, and are
provided with aheading and
huntaway pup.
Students also undertake academic
courses working towards Level 2and 3
NCEA qualifications.
‘‘It doesn’t matter if you come off a
farm and are looking for more
opportunities in the industry or you
are atownie or city kid with no
experience of animals at all, they will
provide it for you and the trainers will
help develop your life skills to
prepare you for acareer in
agribusiness,’’ says Wendy.
There are 106 farms presently
registered as training farms in the
scheme and Wendy says they were
always looking for more.
‘‘It’s also about creating acareer
pathway for the next generation of
farm workers and possibly farm
owners.
‘‘We are aunique programme in that
we tailor our courses to the students
and the types of farms they are seeking
to work on.’’
Applications for the 2025
programme are now available online
Youth Farm Fencing Competition at RGA
By JOHN COSGROVE
Juggling skills with safety, tackling
annoyingly difficult high tension steel
fencing wire (with amind of its own),
all while racing the clock, was the
arduous task facing teams competing
in the first ever Secondary Schools
Fencing competition.
The Primary Industry Academy
Secondary Schools Fencing
competition was afeature of the threeday
Fencing Contractors Association
of New Zealand’s (FCANZ) annual
conference held at the Rangiora
Showgrounds last week.
Fourteen teams from agricultural
education programmes at high schools
in the South Island had the
opportunity to compete in the fencing
competition, usually the domain of
contestants in Young Farmer of the
Year competitions.
‘‘It’s taken 10 years of planning to
see it all came together here today,’’
says organiser Sarah FoleySmith, a
Primary Industry Academy teacher at
Geraldine High School.
‘‘The teams of two from four high
schools —Geraldine, Rangiora,
McKenzie and Akaroa —all had one
and half hours to build athree wire
fence.’’
They were all year 11 and 12
students and they worked under the
critical eye of conference attendees
well versed in working with steelwire
and posts.
The FCANZ National Fencing Field
Day showcased the latestfencing
products, tools and machinery for
rural, residential and security
fencing.
There were industrybest practice
demonstrations, arange of fencing
challenges and the first national
secondary schools Fencing
Competition.
Sarah says she is looking forward to
holding the competition at each
annual conference of the FCANZ
going forward.
She says she was very proud of her
students from Geraldine High School
(GHS) who scooped the top placings in
the competition. GHS’s Tom Batty and
Lachie O’Connell won $2400 worth of
prizes each, winning the challenge
outright from GHS’s Cayden Howell
and Cullen Bolt. Third place wentto
“The Key ofknowledge (Luke 11:52)
END TIMES-PAPACY INBIBLE
PROPHECY
The Word of GOD shows us clearly what GOD
requires of those who would follow HIM.
GOD alone is infallible, and therefore no man
on earth can claimtobeinfallible. The Word of
God is very clear, “All have sinned and come
short of the glory of GOD”. Romans 3:23.
The Lord Jesus Christ said to His disciples
“Call no man your father upon earth; for one
is your father, which isinheaven. Matt 23:9.
GOD told Israel they were not tomake graven
images nor bow down to them, but to worship
HIM only. The Lord Jesus confirmed this in
Matt 33:37, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy GOD
with all your heart., soul and mind”.
