clubCREATE’s Editorial Policy
clubCREATE Magazine is produced by
CREATE Foundation for children and
young people in care. This magazine
contains information about CREATE
programs that create a better life for
kids in care and also has articles and
artworks by clubCREATE members.
It’s really important to us that children
and young people in care are safe and
protected and we do our utmost to
ensure their privacy. For safety
13
reasons state laws don’t allow the faces
of kids in care to be published without
proper permission. So please
understand that if these young people
are not reflective of the story or blurred
it is for safety and legal reasons. All
In the Loop
Thank you Jacqui!
After 17 amazing years at CREATE Foundation, our wonderful
previous CEO, Jacqui Reed, said goodbye to CREATE.
Her hard work has helped make sure your voices are heard and your
needs are met and she has made a big difference here at CREATE!
She has always put children and young people first, and worked hard
to make things better. We are very grateful for everything she has
done for CREATE.
We wish Jacqui the best and thank her for her incredible work!
Speak up. Keep Active!
In this issue of clubCREATE Magazine, our theme is Speak Up. Keep
Active. We’re focusing on the importance of speaking up and staying
active to support your inner happiness.
Speak Up:
It's crucial to speak up if something
doesn’t feel right. Whether it’s about
your safety, your feelings, or
something happening around you,
your voice matters. Speaking up can
help you get the support you need and
make positive changes.
Keep Active:
Staying active is a great way to boost
your mental health and overall
happiness. Playing sports, going to
the playground and even simple
exercises you can do at home can
make you feel happier, stronger, and
more confident.
NEW CEO
We were excited to have our Young Consultant, Eshal from Victoria,
interview CREATE’s new Chief Executive Officer (CREATE Captain).
What does being the CEO mean and consist of?
Being the CEO, or CREATE Captain, is like being the leader of a
big team. This job is about having a vision for helping children
and young people. It also means looking at all the details needed
to run a big organisation with lots of teams and offices across the
country. The CEO supports teams to keep doing great work with
young people and makes sure young people’s voices are heard
where important decisions are made.
Who are three people you look up to and why?
I really admire my three kids. They are wild, creative, and original,
just like many kids in the CREATE community. I also look up to
inventors, poets, philosophers, scientists, and therapists. I admire
people who can imagine better futures and fairer systems.
What made you
want to join
CREATE?
I love that CREATE
values children’s rights,
voices, equity, and
inclusion. These values
are lived by everyone at
CREATE. I wanted to join
because CREATE meets
a real need for young
people by creating a safe
community, empowering
them to get involved in
speaking up, and putting
their voices at the center
of conversations about
them.
6
What do you want to focus on in the care system?
I love hearing about adults who really care for kids in the care
system, support them, and believe in them. I want all kids in
care to have someone who believes in them and supports them
unconditionally. We will work to make sure positive, safe and
meaningful relationships are normal for all kids in care.
Do you have questions for our
new captain, Imogen?
Send your questions to us, and we'll ask her for you! Email your
questions to clubCREATE@create.org.au
Let's create an
emotion wheel
Mental health is super important, just like your physical
health. But what is mental health? It’s all about how we think,
feel, and act.
Think
Feel
ACT
Emotions are a big part of our mental health. Let's explore our
feelings by making a fun and colourful Emotion Wheel.
What You’ll Need:
How to Make Your Emotion Wheel:
1. Draw a Large Circle: Use a compass or trace around a round object
to draw a big circle on your paper.
2. Divide the Circle: Use a ruler and pencil to divide the circle into six
equal sections, like slicing a pizza. You can add more sections if you
want to explore more emotions.
3. Label Each Section: In each section, write down a different emotion.
Here are some examples to get you started:
Happy
Sad
Angry
Excited
Scared
Calm
4. Draw Faces: In each section, draw a face that shows that emotion.
Think about what your face looks like when you feel each emotion.
You can also add symbols that represent each feeling.
5. Colour Each Section: Choose a different colour for each emotion
and colour in the sections. For example, you might choose yellow for
happy, blue for sad, red for angry, and so on.
8
• A large piece of paper or
cardboard
• Markers, crayons, or coloured
pencils
• A ruler
• A pencil
• A compass (or something
round to trace)
• Scissors (optional)
How to Use Your Emotion
Wheel:
1. Check In With Yourself: Whenever you feel a
strong emotion, look at your Emotion Wheel and
find the section that matches how you feel.
2. Express Your Feelings: Use the wheel to help
you talk about your emotions with someone
you trust. It can be easier to share your feelings
when you can point to a colour or picture.
3. Explore Your Emotions: Spend some time
thinking about why you feel the way you do.
What happened to make you feel happy, sad, or
angry? Understanding your emotions can help
you manage them better.
Meet Lachlan:
a clubcreate member
National child
protection week
10
1. Tell us about yourself
Hi! My name is Lachlan. I love playing
video games, playing Dungeons and
Dragons, watching anime, and I'm
currently studying for a Certificate in
Hospitality at TAFE NSW.
2. What’s something you’re
passionate about in the care
sector?
I’m passionate about helping young
people explore their cultural identity. I
didn’t have the chance or support to do
that, and I want to make sure others do.
3. What’s something you’re
proud of?
I’m proud of myself for getting through
tough times and creating a good life for
myself. I’ve done pretty well, and that’s
something worth being proud of.
4. What has been your
biggest challenge in life?
My biggest challenge has been my
mental health. I’ve struggled with it a
lot over the years.
5. What are your goals for
the future?
My goals are to work with animals
because I love them and want to do
something I’m passionate about for a
living.
6. What is a cool
opportunity you’ve
experienced during your
time with CREATE?
I loved going to the ViA 2024
conference with CREATE. I made
great friends, heard amazing stories,
and enjoyed travelling to Adelaide.
It’s a lifelong memory for me. I also
enjoyed meeting the Minister and
sharing my experiences in care.
National Child Protection Week 2024 is coming up, and we want
to tell you all about it. This year's theme is ‘Every Child in Every
Community Needs a Fair Go: Every Conversation Matters’. But
what does that mean?
What is National
Child Protection
Week?
National Child Protection
Week is a special time
when we all come
together to learn how to
keep kids safe and
happy. It's about making
sure every child gets a fair
go, which means every
child has the chance to be
safe, healthy, and happy no
matter where they live or
who they are.
It’s important to
speak up when
something doesn’t
feel right and Talk
to Someone You
Trust
Why Do Conversations
Matter?
This year, we're focusing on the idea
that ‘Every Conversation Matters’.
Talking to each other is one of the
best ways to learn and solve
problems. Here’s why conversations
are so important:
• Shedding Light on Problems:
Talking about things helps us
understand the problems that
we might face.
• Finding Solutions: When we talk
openly, we can find ways to keep
everyone safe and happy.
• Staying Connected:
Conversations help us stay
connected to our families,
friends, and communities.
11
Snap that stigma
Meet Timothy! He's 20 years old and lives in Darwin. Timothy
loves music, fishing, and hanging out with friends. He grew up in
foster care in Darwin and also spent time in Tasmania.
Timothy has been part of important
meetings with government and made
videos about what makes a good
carer. He even went to a conference in
Adelaide this year to talk about making
things better for kids in care.
Timothy has faced hard
times, though. Some
teachers and kids at school
didn't understand foster care
and called him names like
'orphan.'
"Teachers sometimes think all foster kids are the same,
but we're all different. It's important to understand each
kid and how to help them."
It wasn't easy, but Timothy stayed
true to himself. He thinks schools
should teach more about foster
care to help everyone
understand better.
"I showed them I'm just like
them, but with different
experiences. Once they
understood me, things got
better."
12
Timothy's advice for others facing
tough times? Be yourself and find
things you love. For him, music
helped him make friends and
express himself.
"I play instruments now and
made lots of friends. It helps
me share how I feel."
Speak up and be proud of who you are, just like Timothy!
hit with children and parents!
exciting time at a recent Youth Advisory Group
(YAG) meeting about hobbies and interests in
out-of-home care. After sharing their thoughts,
they enjoyed some fun go-kart racing!
The Brissy team took part in the NAIDOC Week
Musgrave Park Family Fun Day - the biggest cultural
celebration of its kind in Australia! Then the Cairns
team attended a March through Cairns City, ending
in Fogerty Park where there were local dance troups/
tribes, local musicians and traditional food!
In true Territory Style, NT held a YAG at Barramundi
Adventures where all of our young people caught
Barra’s including one measuring a whopping 74cm!
After two hours of fishing, young people shared the
importance of culture and what it means for them
to be connected to their culture.
CREATE in Tasmania hosted a silent disco in Hobart!
This event saw children and young people dancing,
singing and giggling away with their carers, families
and the CREATE staff! This connection event was
friendly and accessible to everyone, including those
with sensory considerations.
