CORE launched its COVID-19 Response Program in Georgia on April 30th, 2020. CORE operated
free testing sites in Metro Atlanta in partnership with Fulton County, Fulton County Board of Health,
and other local government and community based organizations. In 2021, we launched our
vaccination program in partnership with the Georgia Department of Public Health.
Four years, 410,000+ COVID-19 tests, 615,000+ total COVID-19 vaccinations (146,000+ mobile
vaccinations), hundreds of staff and local partners, and many programs later, CORE has worked to
support equitable distribution of COVID-19 relief services and other healthcare resources with a
focus on health equity for underserved and low-income communities. CORE Georgia continues to
offer free COVID-19 and Flu vaccinations supported by health outreach and education.
In addition, CORE provides various public health services and health education programs in
Georgia such as our Health Outreach, Mpox, and Community Health Worker programs to promote
long-term health equity among marginalized and vulnerable populations.
Health Outreach & Health Equity
In October 2022, the CORE Fulton Health Equity Program began offering benefits navigation
services at mobile vaccine events as well as other events hosted by community partners. CORE
Georgia has partnered with the Department of Family & Children Services as an umbrella
organization to offer application assistance through Gateway Georgia for government benefits
such as SNAP, WIC, CAPS, TANF, and Medicaid.
In March 2023, we expanded benefits navigation services and incorporated resource coordination
and full cycle case management throughout the state in the other health districts we service. We
currently have 15 Health Outreach Coordinators (HOC) and programming which includes:
clients acting as a liaison between client and
state/client and resources.
Mpox Program
& HIV/STI Test Distribution
In partnership with Georgia Department of Public Health, CORE launched a new program in 2023
to provide Mpox (formerly Monkeypox) vaccination to at-risk communities in Georgia. CORE
hosted over 70 Mpox events across the state of Georgia during the first program year.
We hosted Mpox events in Fulton County, Cobb County, Columbus, Savannah, GNR (Gwinnett,
Newton, Rockdale), Gainesville, Waycross, Dalton, Clayton, and Lagrange. The health districts in
which CORE administered the highest number of vaccines are Fulton County with 21 vaccines,
Savannah with 8 vaccines, and GNR (Gwinnett, Newton, Rockdale) with 7 vaccines.
HIV/STI Test Kit Distributed
To reach our target demographic, we
partnered with local LGBTQ organizations
and businesses to host vaccination events
and participated in 14 PRIDE festivals during
the Pride months of June, September, and
October. We also attended health fairs and
local events to target the Black community,
LatinX community, and rural communities.
CORE Georgia collaborated with the Georgia
Department of Public Health to provide free
HIV & STI at-home test kits to the public. CORE
distributes Standard 5 HIV/STI At-home test
kits and Oraquick HIV test kits. We distribute
test kits throughout the state of Georgia in up
to 18 health districts at Mpox and COVID-19
vaccination events.
Narcan
Distribution
& The Opioid
Crisis
As part of CORE’s Opioid Harm Reduction
program, CORE and the Georgia Department
of Public Health have provided free Narcan
Naloxone at select mobile vaccination sites in
Georgia since 2023.
Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can
reverse an overdose from opioids—including
heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioid
medications— when given in time. Naloxone is
easy to use and small to carry. Narcan is a
brand of Naloxone. Carrying Naloxone can
help save a life if you see a possible overdose.
More than 80,000 of the 107,000 drug
overdose deaths in 2021 involved an opioid.
Drug overdoses can be both fatal and
nonfatal. Overdose deaths remain a leading
cause of injury-related death in the United
States. The majority of overdose deaths
involve opioids: synthetic opioids such as
illegally made fentanyl and stimulants such as
cocaine and methamphetamine.
1,809
Narcan Distributed
Overdose deaths have increased in recent
years and accelerated during the COVID-19
pandemic. Bystanders can recognize the signs
of opioid overdose and offer overdose reverse
medication to potentially save a life and
support prevention and response efforts.
Activities/Sessions
Let’s Get to Work was the theme for CORE Georgia's First Annual All Staff Conference. This event
was an intentional meeting of the minds for all staff to engage, learn, and grow as professionals.
Led by CORE Georgia's Learning & Development Specialist, Marquise Steward, and powered by
the CORE Georgia Learning & Development Committee, each aspect of the 3-day conference was
crafted to give staff a fun, engaging, and informative experience. Presentations and hands-on
workshops provided resources and community support for the overall success of staff within their
respective health districts.
The conference highlighted programs such as our Health Outreach and Community Health Worker
initiatives and it featured our Keynote Panel "What is Your Why?”and an American Idol style
"Elevator Pitch Competition." The trainings, activities, and sessions incorporated a balance of
content relevant to the professionalism and empathy that it takes to excel within our field.
This event was a great opportunity for the staff to connect with one another and inspire each other
to continue pushing forward as a team to build a better and brighter future for and with our
communities of service.
The Community Health Worker (CHW) program launched in spring 2024 to address
hypertension in all of the Georgia Department of Public Health districts that we currently
serve at CORE.
The CHW Program team includes our Area Manager LaQuinta "Lala" Quinn and 16 CHWs
that are educating communities on the risks, causes, symptoms, and ways to improve
hypertension.
Along with health education, we provide patients with educational materials that they can
review at home and a digital blood pressure monitor to track their hypertension levels. We
offer these services at CORE’s mobile vaccination sites and other local events to
populations that are currently diagnosed with hypertension and/or interested in preventing
hypertension.
In the future, we will expand our services to address glucose and harm reduction. Our
ultimate goal is to identify current or potential chronic health issues and support
participants at an individual level to ensure both their immediate health needs can be met
and address the underlying socioeconomic factors amplifying the health risks for patients
and their families.
