Paris-bound teen chasing
her Paralympic pool dream

LILI-FOX MASON is hoping
to carry on the legacy of
Dame Sophie Pascoe when she
competes for the first time at the
Paralympics in Paris which gets
under way next week.
The former Villa Maria
student is one of five swimmers
selected to represent New
Zealand at the games and will
compete in the 400-metre
freestyle S10 and the 100m
butterfly S10.
“I enjoy racing and knowing
all of the training has led up to
that point.
“I also really enjoy training
because the feeling you get after
putting a lot of effort into a hard
session is really cool.”
Mason, 19, was diagnosed
with leukemia when she was
three, and while in treatment
developed a virus which left her
with serious spinal damage.
This led to a lack of muscle
tone through her right leg.
“Fox’s (Lili-Fox) illness was
a journey and everyone in this
world has a journey of some sort.
Fox’s journey was just one of the
tougher ones” said mum Lucy
Hansen.
Mason was resilient
throughout the treatment
process.
“She was always positive,
cracking jokes and singing
songs,” Hansen said.
Mason started swimming
because it was the easiest way to
keep up with her peers.

“I’m not a very good runner or
walker,” she said.
“So to be able to get into the
pool was pain free and easy.”
Attending the Paralympics
has been Mason’s dream since
she was little, but it always felt
“unrealistic”.
Now her swimming dream is
coming true.
She credits ParaFed Canterbury
for giving her a taste of
what parasport was all about and
allowing her to compete at the
Halberg Games, a tournament
for children with disabilities.
By the time she was 14,
Mason was already attending
her first nationals, and in 2022
she qualified for the para world
champs in Portugal.

Library to close doors for
much-needed renewal
FENDALTON Library will be
closed for eight weeks while
the city council refurbishes the
building.
The library will be closed from
Monday, September 23 until
Sunday, November 17.
The service centre, including
NZ Post Plus services, will remain
open as normal, although visitors
will not have access to bathroom
facilities. The library’s carpark is
also unavailable for use during
the closure period.
City council head of libraries
and information Carolyn
Robertson said while library users
may be disrupted by the closure,
the building’s refurbishment is
much needed.

the 400m freestyle S10 at a Para
World Swimming Series event
in Melbourne and then finished
eighth in the 100m butterfly S10
at the World Para Swimming
Championships in Manchester,
despite being hampered by a back
injury.
Mason’s coach, Matt Houston
from Wharenui Swim Club, said
the last three years have all been in
preparation for the trip to Paris.
“We have been getting out there,
grinding, working hard, and doing
what we needed to do”.
Houston said Mason’s hard work
is reflected in her results.
“She’s a really good trainer, she
comes to training, trains hard,
does all the stuff outside the pool
and is really here to give it her all.”
Mason left Villa Maria
College last year to her focus on
swimming.
“Since qualifying in April, it’s
like I’ve thrown all my eggs in one
basket and swimming has become
my main priority” she said.
She considers Wharenui her
second home, with the strong
smell of chlorine following her
every move.
“I’m currently in the pool about
eight times a week for an hourand-a-half.
I also go to the gym
twice a week.”

But it hasn’t always been smooth
sailing.
Mason says one of her biggest
challenges has been struggling to
find the drive and continuing to
push herself.
“I think I struggled with that
determination”.
After Paris, Mason would like
to see where her para swimming
career could take her, whether
that’s another world champs or
another Paralympic Games.
“I would also love to start
studying next year. Trying to find
that balance might be a bit tricky,
but I think that’s quite a cool
challenge.”

Boys’ High first XV coach bows out;

CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High
School’s first XV season has
ended in defeat, and the tenure of
long-standing head coach Rhys
Archibald has come to an end.
Boys’ High went down 20-17
to Nelson College in the First XV
Miles Toyota Premiership final
in Nelson on Saturday, falling
short of repeating last season’s
success when they beat the same
opponent to lift the title.
Archibald, in his last game in
charge of the team after three
stints spanning 13 years, had
nothing but praise for his side.
“At the end of the day, we only
lost two games this year, and
they were both to Nelson, we
won every other game.
“They’re a bloody great bunch
of young men, and they worked
hard all year. We weren’t the
biggest team, and so the guys
had to have real big work-rates.
“I’m really proud of the boys,
they’re a great bunch of fellas
to work with too, just real good
individuals.”
Archibald said the whole team
was packed with talent, but
identified first-five eigth Will
Haig, hooker Josh Findlay, lock
Finn McLeod and fullback Ollie
Singleton as standouts.
“I’m hoping a few boys from
this team this year will go a long
way or hopefully make some
money out of playing rugby for
a while, while their bodies allow
it.
“I really do think there’s a few
in there.
“It’ll be lovely turning on the
TV in a couple of years’ time
and seeing them out there hopefully.”
During his time at Boys’ High,
Archibald won five titles, and the
team made the national first XV
championship twice.
He’d seen a number of
standout players come through
the ranks during his tenure –
including current All Blacks
Will Jordan and Anton Lienert-
Brow.
“There’s been some fantastic
boys through there.
“Anton and Will stick out
because they went through to the
All Blacks, but we’ve been really
lucky.”

Archibald said it was time to take a break
from coaching.
“It is a big time commitment, all the videos
you’ve got to watch on Sundays and Mondays,
all your trainings and everything.
“And then a bloody seven-hour bus trip on
the way home from Nelson when you’ve lost,
that was pretty rough I can tell you.”
He isn’t planning to do any coaching next
year.
“I can be one of those grumpy guys that
walks around the sidelines and criticises
everyone else.”

changed how I see the world.”
That’s how Riccarton High
School year 12 student Reuben
Veenstra described the gruelling
21 days he spent swimming
before sunrise, traversing high
ropes, climbing rock faces while
blindfolded, and summiting
mountains in the Queen Charlotte
Sound.
Reuben attended a post-course
event when he spoke about his
experience at Takere, an Outward
Bound course designed
for high school students in
Canterbury.
“The biggest change was just
a massive change in my mindset.
Being at Outward Bound
taught me how to find the fun
in things, and how much more I
can enjoy anything if I maintain
a positive mindset,”
Reuben was among 14 other
students from Christchurch who
attended the trip in May.
