“I’m thrilled to be back in 

my heels,” Victoria Beckham 

remarked during a preview 

interview while showcasing her 

most cherished cruise collection 

yet. After breaking her foot at 

the gym a few months ago, the 

British designer is now ready to 

step back into the Christmas 

party season with razor-sharp 

tailoring, fluid slip dresses, 

Grecian draping, and seductive 

lace. 

For this cruise collection, 

Beckham considered the 

season and the questions her 

customers—and she herself— 

ponder. “During that time of 

year, I want to wear a tuxedo 

to holiday parties,” Beckham 

explained, highlighting her 

approach to designing for 

herself and the women who 

patronize her brand. 

She reimagined the classic 

white dress shirt as a bib with a 

collar revealing a sliver of skin, 

modeled by Libby Bennett, 

reminiscent of Helmut Newton’s

androgynous models. 

Beckham infused elements 

of gentleman’s loungewear 

into the tailoring, featuring silk 

lapels and loose ties around 

the waist, nodding to the 

elegance of a robe. 

The collection is vibrant,

purple, and light lavender. 

Light knitwear, an expanding 

category for her brand, is

launching my brand, I had

been revitalized with a new

strategy. “The bags have 

performed phenomenally,

The collection also explores

with open cut backs, bare 

shoulders, and sheer black 

lace, perfect for a classic 

Christmas party dress. Earlier 

this month, Beckham’s brand 

made its Met Gala debut as 

“Bridgerton” actor Phoebe 

Dynevor donned one of her 

delicate designs, inspired 

by Beckham’s 50th wedding 

dress. 

“It’s about balance— 

ensuring the dress is elegant 

but also very sexy,” Beckham 

explained, noting that the 

dress was crafted in a week. 

Until now, having one of her 

designs at the Met Gala was

The Model whose Beauty is 

Defiling Age at 70

It is widely believed that the best quote by 

renowned American actress and model, Marilyn 

Monroe, is “give a girl the right shoes, and she 

can conquer the world.” Permit us to disagree! 

At Glamsquad Magazine, we beg to differ. 

Here, we believe that Monroe’s best quote 

is “Beauty and femininity are ageless and 

can’t be contrived, and glamour, although 

the manufacturers won’t like this, cannot be 

manufactured. Not real glamour; it’s based on 

femininity.” 

For your birthday girl, Iman, who turned 70 in 

July, beauty and femininity are not the only ageless 

features – being Black also, is ageless. Iman is all of 

these attributes put in one – beauty, femininity, and 

Africanism! 

Who is Iman? 

Iman Abdulmajid, popularly known simply as 

Iman, is a Somali supermodel, actress, and icon 

of the 80s and 90s. The statuesque stunner was 

born Zara Mohamed Abdulmajid on July 25, 1955, 

and almost instantly a fashion legend after being 

discovered while in college in Kenya. 

She was the muse of many prominent fashion 

designers, inspiring the likes of Gianni Versace, 

Thierry Mugler, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, and Yves 

Saint Laurent. Iman was married to rock musician 

David Bowie from 1992 until his death in 2016. 

They had a daughter, Alexandria, and Iman was 

stepmom to the rock star’s first child, Duncan. 

Through the years, Iman has always been a 10, 

and despite her age, she still maintains her figure, 

glow, beauty and smile. 

Recently, the 70-year-old star opened up on 

her fears during the early years of her career in 

modelling. Since her debut, she has gone on 

to become an icon in the modelling industry 

since she was discovered by an agent during her 

university days but recalled that she had no idea 

what she was doing at her first show. 

“My first show was for Halston. Talk about being 

put in an arena that you’re not prepared [for]. I 

mean, I literally did not know anything. Halston had 

this studio, this very famous studio. The whole thing 

was a mirror. The walls were mirrored, the ceiling 

was mirrored, the floors were mirrored. I’d never 

worn heels in my life, I was scared to death,” she 

told InStyle magazine. “And [the show was] in his 

showroom. So it was like three rooms, all mirrored. I 

walked the first room, terrified, walked the second 

room, and now I got a little bit confident, and I 

thought, Oh, there is a third room. There were only 

two rooms, I walked right into a mirror. ”

Meanwhile, the ‘Exit to Eden’ star 

was then asked what her “biggest 

challenge” had been since she 

started out and she admitted it had 

been speaking up about trying to 

get equal pay as a Black woman. 

“It’s speaking out. I came into the 

industry, although [I was only] 19, but 

I was fully formed about my worth 

before I came in, as an African girl 

… coming from where I come from, 

Somalia, and all that. One thing that 

my parents instilled in me, especially 

as a girl, was that self-worth is key 

… relationships, jobs, it doesn’t 

matter. If it doesn’t serve you well, it 

doesn’t treat you well, just walk away 

from it. And walking away never 

means you’re losing something. So, 

I came in having that, at least, in 

my pocket,” the beauty who was 

married to David Bowie explained. 

“The first thing that was thrown 

at me was that I wasn’t going to 

be paid the same amount as the 

caucasian models. And I was like, 

“Wait, what? And why?” And they 

were like, “Well, that’s how it is; that’s 

what the clients say.” And I said, 

‘Well, I’m not going to do this.’ And 

I walked away, literally. I told the 

agent, ‘I’m not interested in the 

Black and White issue. I am more 

interested in that if I am doing the 

same service that the White model is 

doing, I expect the same payment. 

And because I was able to walk 

away, I didn’t work for three months, I 

said no to everything.” 

Biography and Early 

Life 

Iman Mohamed Abdulmajid 

(born Zara Mohamed Abdulmajid, 

25 July 1955), known mononymously 

as Iman, is a Somali-American 

model and actress. A muse of designers 

such as Gianni Versace, Thierry Mugler, 

Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, and Yves 

Saint Laurent, she is also noted for her 

philanthropic work. She was married to rock 

musician David Bowie from 1992 until his 

death in 2016. 

Iman was born Zara Mohamed 

Abdulmajid (Somali: Zara Maxamed 

Cabdulmajiid) in Mogadishu, Somalia, 

and raised as a Muslim. She was later 

renamed Iman, meaning “faith” in Arabic, 

at her grandfather’s urging, who believed 

she would “prosper” with a masculine 

ame. Iman is the daughter of Mariam 

and Mohamed Abdulmajid. Her father, 

a diplomat, was the Somali ambassador 

to Saudi Arabia, and her mother was a 

gynaecologist. She has four siblings: two 

brothers and two sisters, and was the first girl 

in her family in six generations of sons. 

Iman lived with her grandparents during 

her formative years. At the age of four, 

she was sent to boarding school in Egypt, 

where she spent most of her childhood and 

adolescence. Following political unrest in 

Somalia, Iman’s father moved the family 

back to the country. At his behest, she, 

her mother, and her siblings subsequently 

travelled to Kenya and were later joined 

by her father and younger sister. She briefly 

studied political science at the University of 

Nairobi in 1975. 

Career 

Modelling 

While at university, Iman was discovered 

by American photographer Peter Beard 

and moved to the United States to begin 

a modelling career. Her first modelling 

assignment was for Vogue in 1976. She 

soon appeared on the cover of some of 

the world’s most prestigious magazines, 

establishing herself as a supermodel. 

With her long neck, slender figure, fine 

features, and copper-toned skin, Iman was

an instant success in the fashion world, though 

she insists that her looks are merely typically 

Somali. She became a muse to many prominent 

designers, including Halston, Gianni Versace, 

Calvin Klein, Issey Miyake, and Donna Karan. She 

was a favourite of Yves Saint Laurent, who once 

described her as his “dream woman”. Iman 

has worked with photographers such as Helmut 

Newton, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, and Annie 

Leibovitz. 

Iman credits the nurturing she received from 

various designers with giving her the confidence to 

succeed in an era when individuality was valued 

and model-muses were often an integral part of 

the creative process. She is represented by TESS 

Management in London. 

Business 

Iman Cosmetics 

After almost two decades of modelling, 

Iman started her own cosmetics firm in 1994, 

focusing on difficult-to-find shades for women. 

Based on her years of experience mixing her own 

formulations for make-up artists to use on her, 

she was closely involved with the final product 

and also acted as the commercial face of the 

company. Iman Cosmetics was a $25-milliona-year 

business by 2010. It is centred on $14.99 

foundations in four formulations and 14 shades 

and is among the top-selling foundation brands 

on Walgreens’ website. 

In early 2012, Iman signed fellow Somali 

designers Ayaan and Idyl Mohallim, founders 

of the Mataano fashion company, as brand 

ambassadors for her cosmetics line. In late 2021, 

Iman released her signature fragrance, “Love 

Memoir”. The colour of the amber bottle is a nod 

to the sunsets she and her husband enjoyed. 

The shape of the bottle mimics two stones, 

referencing a spiritual ritual where flat stones are 

placed to guide people who come after you. 

This tradition is also connected to healing from 

grief. Iman has practised this ritual around her and 

David’s property.

Global Chic 

Due to her marketability and high profile, 

Iman was approached in 2007 by the CEO of 

the Home Shopping Network (HSN) to create a 

clothing design line. Inspired by her childhood 

in Egypt and her modelling time with Halston, 

Iman’s first collection introduced embroidered, 

one-size-fits-all caftans. Her collection on HSN is 

called Global Chic. 

Television 

Iman appeared in two episodes of Miami 

Vice, playing Dakotah in “Back in the World” 

(1985) and Lois Blyth in “Love at First Sight” 

(1988). She also had a guest role as Mrs. 

Montgomery on The Cosby Show (1985). In 

1988, she appeared as Marie Babineaux in an 

episode of In the Heat of the Night. 

In the mid-2000s, Iman spent two years as 

the host of Bravo TV’s fashion-themed show 

Project Runway Canada. In November 2010, 

along with her friend and colleague, designer 

Isaac Mizrahi, Iman also began hosting the 

second season of The Fashion Show. Bravo 

started the series to replace its former hit Project 

Runway, which has now moved to the Lifetime 

network. 

Film 

Iman first featured in the 1979 British film The 

Human Factor and had a bit part in the 1985 

Oscar-winning film Out of Africa starring Robert 

Redford and Meryl Streep. She then portrayed 

Nina Beka in the 1987 thriller No Way Out with 

Kevin Costner and Hedy in the Michael Caine 

comedy Surrender the same year. 

During her first year in Hollywood, in 1991, 

she worked on several film productions. Among 

them were the Tim Hunter-directed Lies of the 

Twins and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, 

where she played a shapeshifting alien. In 1991, 

she appeared in The Linguini Incident opposite 

her then-fiancé David Bowie. She had a smaller 

part in the 1991 comedy House Party 2 and in 

the 1994 comedy/romance film Exit to Eden.

beauty company, Iman is also 

actively involved in several charitable 

endeavours. Since September 2019, 

Iman has held the role of CARE’s 

first-ever Global Advocate, where 

she works alongside CARE to support 

its mission to create a world where 

poverty has been overcome, and all 

people live with dignity 

and security. 

She is also currently a 

spokesperson for the Keep 

a Child Alive programme 

and works closely with the 

Children’s Defence Fund. 

She also serves as an 

Ambassador for Save the 

Children and has been 

active in raising awareness 

of their relief services in the 

greater East Africa region. 

Additionally, Iman 

works with the Enough 

Project to end the global 

trade in conflict minerals. 

She played a key part 

in the public campaign 

against blood diamonds 

through her termination 

of her contract with the diamonds 

conglomerate De Beers over a conflict 

of ethics. 

Awards 

Over the course of her long 

modelling and philanthropic career, 

Iman has received many awards. On 

7 June 2010, she received a Fashion 

Icon lifetime achievement award 

from the Council of Fashion Designers 

of America (CFDA), a special prize 

reserved for “an individual whose 

signature style has had a profound 

influence on fashion”. Iman selected 

her friend, actress and former model 

Isabella Rossellini, to present the 

award. Wearing a gown designed 

by Giambattista Valli with four giant 

diamond bracelets on each arm, 

Iman thanked her parents “for giving 

me a neck longer than any other 

girl on any go-see anywhere in the 

world”. 

Personal Life 

Iman is a Muslim and has credited 

her faith with helping her through dark 

times. She is fluent in five languages: 

Somali, Arabic, Italian, French, and 

English. She also obtained American 

citizenship when she was in her 

twenties. 

Iman was first married at the age 

of 18 to Hassan, a young Somali 

entrepreneur and Hilton hotel 

executive. The marriage ended a few 

years later when she moved to the 

United States to pursue a modelling 

career. In 1977, Iman dated the 

American actor Warren Beatty. Later 

that year, she became engaged 

to the American basketball player 

Spencer Haywood, and they married 

soon after. Their daughter, Zulekha 

Haywood (from whom she has a 

granddaughter), was born in 1978; in 

February 1987, the couple divorced. 

In 1990, Iman met the English 

musician David Bowie on a surprise 

blind date set up by a friend in Los 

Angeles. The friend was hairdresser 

Teddy Antolin, who invited Iman to 

a party. When she arrived at the 

restaurant, there were only four 

attendees: Antolin, Antolin’s boyfriend, 

Iman, and Bowie. At the end of the 

evening, Bowie offered to drive her 

home, and she said, “No, I’m going to 

drive my car.” He invited her to tea the 

next day, and Iman learned he did 

not drink tea. They went to a nearby 

coffee shop. Bowie named his 1991 

instrumental piece “Abdulmajid” after 

her, which was later converted into a 

symphony by Philip Glass.

Somali–American model and 

actress who is solidified in the 

fashion lexicon as one of the most

when Juliette Binoche couldn’t hold back 

tears while presenting Meryl Streep with 

the honorary Palme d’Or at the opening 

ceremony. Streep attempted to comfort 

her by placing a hand on her shoulder, but 

Binoche remained tearful 

Despite the tears, the moment was joyous 

for Streep, who humorously remarked the next 

morning, “I don’t get any respect at home, so 

it’s amazing to come into this arena and have 

that big tidal wave. Ce matin (this morning), I 

was a little rocky. I didn’t go to bed until 3!” 

Streep, showcasing understated elegance 

on the Croisette, revealed she thought her 

career was over at 39. Reflecting on her 

memorable scenes, she reminisced about the 

“intimate” Out of Africa shampoo scene with

Cannes never fails to deliver a few 

uncomfortable moments. This year’s shocks 

came not from David Cronenberg’s The 

Shrouds, but from Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice, 

a fictionalized tale of young Donald Trump 

starring Sebastian Stan and Maria Bakalova 

as Trump and his first wife Ivana. The film 

depicts Trump sexually assaulting his 

wife after criticizing her appearance, 

prompting Ivana to retort that her orange, 

balding husband should look in the mirror. 

The audience reacted with discomfort, 

particularly during scenes of Trump 

undergoing liposuction and scalp reduction. 

The Trump campaign has called the film 

“garbage” and plans to sue for the “blatantly 

false assertions.” 

Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest film with Emma 

Stone, Kinds of Kindness, also included shocking 

moments of mutilation that had the audience 

watching through their fingers. Despite the 

intense scenes, Stone was in high spirits at 

the film’s press conference, delighted when 

a journalist called her by her birth name, 

“Emily.” “That’s my name!” she excitedly told 

Lanthimos, who seemed surprised by the 

revelation. 

Nothing on the iconic red-carpeted 

stairs leading to the Lumière theater goes 

unnoticed, including a confrontation 

between Kelly Rowland and a security 

guard that went viral on May 21. At the 

Marcello Mio premiere, the Destiny’s 

Child alum was ascending the staircase 

when a security guard tried to hurry her 

along. Their exchange was captured 

on video. “The woman knows what 

happened. I know what happened,” 

Rowland, 43, told the Associated Press 

at the amfAR gala. “I have a boundary, and I 

stand by those boundaries, and that is it.” 

“There were other women on that carpet 

who didn’t quite look like me, and they weren’t 

scolded or pushed off,” she added. “I stood 

my ground, and she felt like she had to stand 

hers. But I stood my ground.”

is Defiling Age at 69

Iman Abdulmajid, popularly 

known simply as Iman, is a 

Somali supermodel, actress, 

and icon of the 80s and 90s. The 

statuesque stunner was born Zara 

Mohamed Abdulmajid on July 

25, 1955, and almost instantly 

a fashion legend after being 

discovered while in college in 

Kenya. 

She was the muse of many 

prominent fashion designers, 

inspiring the likes of Gianni 

Versace, Thierry Mugler, Calvin 

Klein, Donna Karan, and Yves 

Saint Laurent. Iman was married 

to rock musician David Bowie 

from 1992 until his death in 2016. 

They had a daughter, Alexandria, 

and Iman was stepmom to the 

rock star’s first child, Duncan. 

Through the years, Iman has 

always been a 10, and despite her 

age, she still maintains her figure, 

glow, beauty and smile. 

Recently, the 69-year-old star 

opened up on her fears during 

the early years of her career in 

modelling. Since her debut, she has 

gone on to become an icon in the 

modelling industry since she was 

discovered by an agent during her 

university days but recalled that she 

had no idea what she was doing at 

her first show. 

“My first show was for Halston. 

Talk about being put in an arena 

that you’re not prepared [for]. 

I mean, I literally did not know 

anything. Halston had this studio, 

this very famous studio. The whole 

thing was a mirror. The walls were 

mirrored, the ceiling was mirrored, 

the floors were mirrored. I’d 

never worn heels in my life, I was 

scared to death,” she told InStyle 

magazine. “And [the show was] in 

his showroom. So it was like three 

rooms, all mirrored. I walked the first 

room, terrified, walked the second 

room, and now I got a little bit 

confident, and I thought, Oh, there 

is a third room. There were only two 

rooms, I walked right into a mirror. ” 

Meanwhile, the ‘Exit to Eden’ star 

was then asked what her “biggest 

challenge” had been since she 

started out and she admitted it had 

been speaking up about trying to 

get equal pay as a Black woman. 

“It’s speaking out. I came into 

the industry, although [I was only] 

19, but I was fully formed about

my worth before I came in, as an 

African girl … coming from where 

I come from, Somalia, and all that. 

One thing that my parents instilled 

in me, especially as a girl, was that 

self-worth is key … relationships, 

jobs, it doesn’t matter. If it doesn’t 

serve you well, it doesn’t treat you 

well, just walk away from it. And 

walking away never means you’re 

losing something. So I came in 

having that, at least, in my pocket,” 

the beauty who was married to 

David Bowie explained. 

“The first thing that was thrown 

at me was that I wasn’t going to 

be paid the same amount as the 

caucasian models. And I was like, 

“Wait, what? And why?” And they 

were like, “Well, that’s how it is; 

that’s what the clients say.” And I 

said, ‘Well, I’m not going to do this.’ 

And I walked away, literally. I told 

the agent, ‘I’m not interested in the 

Black and White issue. I am more 

interested in that if I am doing 

the same service that the White 

model is doing, I expect the same 

payment. And because I was able 

to walk away, I didn’t work for three 

months, I said no to everything.”

Last week, the fashion industry’s 

key players gathered in 

Copenhagen for the annual 

Global Fashion Summit, 

organised by Global Fashion 

Agenda, to tackle sustainability 

challenges. This year’s theme, 

”unlocking the next level,” focused 

on evaluating progress and urgently 

addressing future actions. 

Over the course of three days, 

events, talks, and roundtables were 

held to discuss and share knowledge 

on the state of the industry and 

how to move it forward. The summit 

was organised by Global Fashion 

Agenda, a non-profit organisation 

aiming to accelerate the impact on 

sustainability within the textile industry. 

Fifteen years since the inaugural 

summit (then called Copenhagen 

Fashion Summit), this year’s theme 

centredaround ”unlocking the next 

level”, evaluating past efforts and 

addressing the need for urgent 

action. “It’s asking us to firstly imagine 

what the next level is and articulate 

that in our organisations and our 

minds as people, and then it invites 

us to collaborate and unlock that 

next level together,” explains Faith 

Robinson, Head of Content at Global 

Fashion Agenda. 

The summit is based on the 

Fashion CEO Agenda, a guide 

and thought leadership framework 

developed by the Global Fashion 

Agenda. It presents five priorities 

for fashion brands to propel their 

sustainability work: operational 

sustainability, redefining growth, 

activating consumers, prioritising 

people, and mobilising based on 

materiality. 

— For us at GFA, our vision is a net 

positive fashion industry, ultimately. 

That’s an industry that gives 

back more to the economy, the

environment, and the people than 

it takes. It’s a big, lofty ambition, but 

that’s where we would like to see the 

industry lead. That’s the next level for 

us,” Robinson commented. 

One of the summit’s greatest 

achievements is bringing all 

stakeholders and key opinion leaders 

in the industry under the same 

roof. The summit attracts speakers 

and visitors from all industry parts: 

manufacturers, brands, start-ups, 

conglomerates, and NGOs. It 

provides a common ground to share 

knowledge and insights on driving 

change. 

— It’s important to explain that 

GFA is a multi-stakeholder initiative. 

We work with and are supported by 

many different organisations, from 

data companies to other nonprofits 

to brands, and historically, working 

with brands has been a big part of 

our theory of change. Over the last 

15 years, we’ve built relationships with 

these companies that have allowed 

us to appreciate and understand 

when the ambition becomes real, 

and our partners are open with us on 

their climate transition plans, Robinson 

explains. 


FEATURE 

One of the most important parts 

of the GFS is the ability to share and 

learn from each other’s experiences, 

which could be seen even among 

the biggest players. 

— We are a group but still 

very small in the industry. We must 

continuously engage our suppliers 

and peers to work collaboratively. 

That’s why moments like the GFS 

are so important, to be able to 

collaborate on standards and 

actions together. I would say the 

biggest challenge is alignment in 

the industry. There has been progress 

in that area particularly around 

the improvement on the taxability, 

says Géraldine Vallejo, Sustainability 

Programme Director at Kering. 

If the sustainability discourse 

could seem a bit grey, there are som 

glimpses of light. 

— I’ve been working in 

sustainability for 10 years now. When 

I joined, it was extremely complex 

to have information about the origin 

of the materials, and the the cycle 

of certified or innovative materials of 

high quality. Now we have certified 

materials for show or materials. We 

have high quality, use recycled 

natural fibres, and have reached 

98% traceability of our materials. Still, 

the last ones are the most difficult — 

there is progress, Vallejo explains. 

WHERE ARE WE GOING? 

As this year’s summit marked 

the 15th anniversary, GFA invited 

the panel present at the very first 

summit in 2009. These summits and 

conferences can be overly positive, 

suggesting that progress is being 

made and leaders preach to the 

choir. However, the retrospective of 

15 years was an awakening and a 

good litmus test of what has been 

done since. 

Eva Kruse, founder of both 

the Danish Fashion Institute and 

Copenhagen Fashion Week, 

initiated the summit in 2009 when 

it was unveiled that the climate 

conference, COP15, was going to 

be held in Copenhagen. Back then, 

fashion was not on the agenda in 

the global sustainability discourse 

and was so peripheral it needed its 

conference. Hence, the summit was 

initiated. 

Looking back, Kruse noted that 

the anticipated change from 2009 

has not panned out as planned. 

“I don’t think I knew how slow this 

would go. In 2009, it was initially a 

one-off, but it had critical mass, and 

we felt we were onto something, so 

we decided to make it more than 

once, and one led to the other,” 

Kruse explains. “But I always thought 

we would become obsolete at some 

point, that we wouldn’t need to meet. 

It wasn’t the idea that we would 

discuss the same things 15 years later. 

— Sustainability is on all CEOs’ 

agendas today, but it’s still not 

getting the right attention or money. 

I’ll be brutally honest, I am quite 

disappointed with all of us, myself 

included, that we haven’t been able 

to push further forward. 

In the same panel, Vanessa 

Friedman, a journalist at the New York 

Times, stressed that one point not 

addressed enough is that too much 

stuff is being made, projecting that 

148 million tonnes of textile waste will 

end up in landfills by 2030. 

— We do need to discuss volume 

growth fundamentally. Textile fibre 

growth has increased by 46% in 

volume since 2009 and continues 

to grow. We have more people 

on the planet, but not equivalently 

more space for more stuff in our 

wardrobes,” Kruse commented. 

“We don’t have time, 15 years have 

passed, and here we are. 2030 is 

only six years away, and only 15% of 

the global goals are on track. That’s 

it. We simply need to step it up; we’re

adults, Kruse urgently addressed the 

audience. 

One big issue is funding. Today, as 

little as 2% of companies’ revenue is 

put towards R&D, and companies are 

often supporting one or two startups. 

An organisation that is contributing 

on its end is the H&M Foundation, a 

private foundation that aims to figure 

out how it’s possible to accelerate 

solutions for the textile and fashion 

industry by using philanthropic 

funding towards projects, research, 

and start-ups. 

— The industry desperately needs 

new solutions, whether it’s supporting 

innovators, start-ups, or changemakers, 

in their journey from an idea 

to scaling up and becoming future 

tools for the industry and forming 

different types of partnerships and 

initiatives. We can function as a 

facilitator and a convenor to get 

projects going or insights produced 

so that we could both get action 

on the ground but also look at the 

whole narrative of where we are 

today and where we need to go, 

Christiane Dolva, Strategy Lead of 

H&M Foundation explains. 

WHAT ARE THE SOLUTIONS? 

One of the panelists, Julie Gilhart, 

a fashion consultant and former SVP 

of Barney’s, suggested AI as a solution 

to combat overproduction. 

A solution provider that 

has implemented this is Hyran 

Technologies, which helps brands 

respond to consumer demand, 

increase profitability, and reduce 

waste by leveraging AI in the supply 

chain. 

— The model of the fashion 

industry is built on forecasts. Based on 

a guess, those forecasts convert into 

the bill of materials, material orders, 

and capacity orders. So, my view 

was let’s stop guessing. Let’s stop 

trying to be precisely wrong and be 

approximately right. Understand the 

importance of speed and flexibility, 

and understand how you can model 

risk,” explains Ahmed Zaidi, CEO of 

Hyran Technologies. 

Another way of leveraging AI, is 

coming from Vaayu. A company 

that has automated software that 

empowers companies within the 

retail ecosystem to track and cut 

environmental impact, by using 

predictive AI. 

— [the next step] for us, is how do 

we know all of the models coming 

through all of the AI technology 

coming through to accelerate the 

speed that we can do more, that we 

can give brands the tools to be able 

to understand really where reduction 

and optimisation is possible and 

how you scale that to understand 

complete portfolios and total supply 

chain data from the brands, explains 

Namrata Sandhu, CEO and cofounder 

of Vaayu. 

Another solution provider is re&up, 

part of SANKO Holding, the world’s 

largest denim manufacturer. After 

more than a decade of research 

and development, re&up has 

found a way to recycle polyester 

and cotton blends of textiles and 

turn them into clean textile fibres, 

addressing a significant issue within 

the industry. Previously, such materials 

often ended up in landfills. Textile-totextile 

recycling of polyblends has 

been hard to scale, but re&up now 

has a capacity of 80,000 tonnes of 

textiles and hopes to recycle 200,000 

tonnes in the coming year. 

During the summit, GFA and PDS 

Ventures revealed the winner of the 

Trailblazer Programme 2024. The 

programme aims to identify and 

platform early-stage innovators that 

accelerate the transformation of 

the textile and fashion industry. This 

year’s winner, Bloom Labs, leverages 

the billions of tons of fibrous protein 

waste produced annually to create 

bioplastics and textile fibres at scale. 

Using 100% bio-based ingredients, 

Bloom Labs can produce natural 

fibres with the characteristics of 

natural fibres but with the efficiency of 

industrial fibre processing.

Aeterna collection was showcased

Set among the ruins of the city’s

many of its iconic designs. Aeterna,

“It was fundamental for me to do

eternal as Bulgari and as eternal as 

Rome,” said creative director Lucia 

Silvestri to Bazaar.

Chopra were seated in the 

front row, with Chopra donning 

the breathtaking 140-carat 

SerpentiAeterna necklace, crafted 

in celebration of the brand’s 

milestone. This remarkable piece 

took over 2,800 hours to create, with 

Silvestri describing it as “the most 

precious necklace we have ever 

crafted.” 

Rossellini closed the show 

wearing the Augustus Aeternus 

Emerald MoneteSautoir, featuring 

an ancient bronze coin minted 

between 14 and 37 A.D. with the 

likeness of Emperor Augustus, strung 

on 149 exquisite emerald beads. 

“We have worked tirelessly to 

create what we believe to be the 

most extraordinary high jewelry 

collection ever,” said Silvestri. 

“Through the combination of 

boundless creativity and high-end 

craftsmanship, it celebrates Bulgari’s 

ability to keep reinventing itself.”

Buckwheat: 

This ancient cereal, often compared to quinoa, is currently in the spotlight 

for good reason. It is rich in fiber, antioxidants, plant proteins, and is glutenfree. 

The fiber in buckwheat supports the growth of beneficial bacteria in our 

microbiota, which in turn produce anti-inflammatory substances. Additionally, 

buckwheat has a lower glycemic index compared to rice or pasta, thanks to its 

fiber content.

Dark Chocolate with 85% Cocoa: 

We save the most delicious for last! Dark chocolate is good for your 

health, provided it’s rich in cocoa and low in sugar. Cocoa is a

and theobromine, an anti-inflammatory compound. Don’t worry if 

you have acne—four squares of dark chocolate with 85% cocoa are 

unlikely to cause problems; in fact, they may help. Conversely, milk or

These tiny fruits, along with 

raspberries, redcurrants, and other 

berries, are packed with antioxidants 

that combat oxidative stress in our 

cells. This is crucial because oxidative 

stress promotes aging and triggers 

inflammatory reactions. Blueberries, 

in particular, contain polyphenols, a 

highly effective type of antioxidant. 

Numerous studies have confirmed 

their ability to block the production of 

certain pro-inflammatory substances. 

Kefir: 

This fermented drink is a natural source of probiotics—live bacteria that 

enrich and diversify our microbiome. A healthy microbiome contributes 

to better digestion, stronger immunity, healthy skin, and good mental 

health. When the microbiota is imbalanced, it can lead to intestinal 

permeability, allowing endotoxins to enter the bloodstream and cause 

an inflammatory response. 

Nuts: 

Almonds are a fantastic source of 

fiber, plant proteins, minerals, and 

antioxidants. They contain Omega 

3 fatty acids, which are essential 

for our body’s proper functioning 

and often lacking in our diet. These 

fatty acids help produce antiinflammatory 

substances that benefit 

cardiovascular, dermatological, 

cognitive, and joint health. Essentially, 

they are great for skin problems, 

inflammatory diseases, and even 

anxiety! For optimal results, also 

include fatty fish like tuna, salmon,
