FROM THE DESK OF MADAM NEVERSTOP
EDITORIAL
THE PROCESS IS THE PRODUCT / THE PRODUCT IS THE PROCESS
Dear worldthreaders,
As it turns out, 15 years ago I was probably making the
best of a New York heatwave by walking around LIC,
Queens, where 5Pointz used to reign; A gigantic building
full of graffiti and street art by some of the most renown
artists in the world, which gloriously appeared like a
vision once the 7 train came out of the underground,
away from Manhattan and into my neighborhood, LIC,
back then a haven of musicians, poets and artists... now,
a lego-like collection of corporate blue glass buildings
and wealthy sons-of-bankers walking their chihuahuas.
See, it was here, right by the MOMA PS1 and surrounded
by galleries, bars and restaurants, that the idea of Red
Door Magazine was born. And it was while walking
through the floors of this now-extinct building, filled
with gorgeous art studios, that 15 years ago the name
for Red Door became the chosen one... simply because
it was the one door of an art studio, blasting great
music and with laughter and incense coming out from
its edges, that caused the most curiosity. We knocked
and knocked, but it wasn’t meant to be. What potential!
What mystery! What awaits on the other side of this
Red Door?
Since then, much has happened. It’s been a decade
since relocating to Denmark, and here Red Door is
also a gallery (and bookshop)... and a publishing
project called Red Press, and a multimedia archive
called The Poetic Phonotheque, and a podcast called
the Red Transmissions, and an international network
of creators that covers the Americas, Europe, and
Australia, where we have many correspondents and
collaborators. To say that it hasn’t been easy would be
an understatement. The reason why Red Door started
as a virtual magazine, back when that concept wasn’t a
popular idea, was because the main goal was to disrupt
the concept of paywalls and exclusive access that only
certain classes would be able to access. If I/we created
a magazine that was accessible online for free, without
any corporate sponsors, government grants or other
types of advertisements, we could focus on the quality
of the content and the freedom of speech, taking upon
us the sole responsibility of running it as a DIY project.
In many ways this afforded us the freedom to fail and
succeed frequently and well. To reach communities and
spaces that otherwise would not have been attentive or
capable of collaborating with us... and to do a project
that truly and fully has been done in the name of art,
06
by artists and for artists, wherever we are. Here I must
mention Kultivera, who took the files of issue 20 of the
magazine and shipped it to my address so as to very
convincingly persuade me to begin the life of Red Door
as a printed magazine as well, about darn time.
The most surprising thing, every single time, has been
experiencing people saying yes. From Dieglo La Torre,
an illustrator and musician working for DC comics who
became the first featured artist of Red Door, to the
hundreds of poets and visual artists, among them Per
Adolfsen, Molly Crabapple, Daniel Martin Diaz, among
many other fantastic creators who through the years
have shared their work and knowledge and made of
this magazine such a rewarding process. Because in a
neverstop circular creative existence, that is the mantra:
The process is the product - The product is the process.
And now, 15 years later, we will gather this October, my
dear worldthreaders, most of whom I know thanks to
Red Door and by guidance of poetry itself, to celebrate
in exactly the same way RED DOOR has always existed:
Through collaborations, through worldthreading,
through me coming up with the strangest ideas and
you saying yes and us making it happen. It all started
with the idea of throwing a party but as usual, we’ve
gotten carried away and now it’s a whole festival.
RESONANS Fringe Festival is of course centered
on the idea of marking this milestone, by
celebrating those who have been a part of the
magazine through the years. But it is also the
breathing of new life, to our gallery, to our street,
to our neighborhood, to our friendships. We focus
on humanity’s connection with nature, and start
with local activation, Nordic participation, and
international collaboration, this October 8th to the
13th in Copenhagen.
And most importantly, you can already draw a big
RED heart on your calendar for that week, so that
you too can be part of the celebration, because
you belong here, among us, levitating in music,
poetry, multimedia art, good conversations, new
ideas, friendship... and who knows, probably that
poem you’ve been seeking for.
Looking forward to this and so much more,
Madam Neverstop.

HG MADSEN
Henrik Gødsbøll Madsen lives and
works in Copenhagen. His showroom
Figur is located on the street next to Red
Door’s, at Peter Fabers Gade 11... so
imagine the surprise of encountering
his art during one of our neighborhood
explorations: These windows of
passive moments at the edge of the
world, these massive figures allowing
us to see their apathy and exhaustion
at will, oh the comfort of fine living! oh
the sublime expressions of comfort,
even at a time of much incertainty.
These sharp visual critiques of our
species will leave you pondering, yet
eager to return to their planet.
HG Madsen’s primary practice
is figurative acrylic painting. He
investigates aspects of society and
modern civilization by portraying
specific human figures and characters
from everyday life, aiming to frame
what you could call a human paradox.
A typical motif in his work is the
tourist. A figure that represents the
personification of living “the good life”
but also simultaneously incarnates
the devastating effects of over
consumption in the Western world. The
individuals in HG Madsens paintings
are often displayed in a flawed non
flattering manner. This “tribute” to
imperfection in the character building
is important in HG Madsens work,
because by this approach you can
trigger a more fragile and naked
depiction or as the late Leonard
Cohen pronounces it:
“There is a Crack in Everything. That’s
How the Light Gets In” (L. Cohen)
HG Madsen holds a master’s degree
in educational anthropology and you
could observe his work as a sort of
visual anthropology. Parallel to his
work as a painter HG Madsen has been
working professionally in the field of
web design and animation.
CANONICALLY
or because I have to reread Tender Buttons and am reminded that Stein is was a lesbian and
synonymous with lesbianism (and fascism) but first this book and its domestic objects its title
which might mean nipples and I think clitoris which is the first thing anyone thinks of when they
think of a lesbian (right) the clitoris and perhaps the tongue two objects I am naming so
nominally with so many nouns that I cannot seem to drop and have thought also of the tongue
and the clitoris and the lesbian bed in which one becomes a sort of sacred food to the other
meanwhile I am considering form and shape and how the mind wanders when given no real
boundaries consider this lack of punctuation like Stein’s a way of bucking at hierarchy and
remember also this is so much like Picasso who painted women green and lay it all out there
especially in the painting I once saw at The Tate where some woman had clearly angered him
and so remade her body, showed it splayed to the world her tender buttons (every one) exposed
her legs open her face turned towards us staring from two different eyes remember Picasso who
stole who colonized in an effort to be brilliant and perhaps this inspired her too perhaps Stein
was stealing something and hid it within the rooms the stanzas the little squares little cubes
perhaps it means nothing perhaps it is a code perhaps
Seven Ways to Live Life While It Disappears
1.
Be ready to empty your pockets of winter.
Let the daffodils push you into optimism.
See how the sky can still fill with swallows
and how worms can still work the soil.
Forget the troubles weather can bring.
Plant another bulb. Feel the brisk breeze.
2.
Live the life of the ascetic, alone, away
from the news that tells tales of our stupidity
and destruction, away from those who would
impose their will on others, away from all
lies, hypocrisy, and greed. Develop faith
in your ignorance. Commit to a Spartan life.
3.
Be present, mindful of each moment.
Don’t let history haunt or speculation sour.
Keep a gratitude journal. Notice how the grass,
the azalea bush, and agapanthus leaves are
difference shades of green, how a brush stroke
creates, how the mirror tells your simple story.
4.
Leave your church and other organizations
that proselytize, preach the superiority
of their views. Remove yourself from political
parties whose primary interest is maintaining
power. Escape from friends and partners who take
pleasure in argument. Win by stepping aside.
5.
Become a hedonist. Indulge in a selfish orgy
of pleasures. Serve yourself your desires
without regard to how your gratification
might infringe on others or transgress norms.
Remember, nothing matters but just you
for as long as you can keep satisfying yourself.
022
6.
Repeat Vonnegut’s phrase, “And so it goes”
whenever needed. Accept there’s nothing you
can do. Recognize that you are incapable
of changing current circumstances, of stopping
what’s to come. Acknowledge the end is near,
that you are helpless. Say, “And so it goes” again.
7.
Fight. Fight for survival. Be like a wild animal,
caged. Escape from the logic your own comfort,
from convenience becoming necessity. Claw
yourself free. Do with less. Do without. Cover
your tracks. Commit. Take risks. Save your habitat.
Act relentlessly. Believe it’s not too late. Roar.
Ronald J. Pelias spent most of his
career writing books, e.g., If the
Truth Be Told (Brill Publications),
The Creative Qualitative
Researcher (Routledge), and
Lessons on Aging and Dying
(Routledge), that call upon the
literary as a research strategy.
Now he just writes for the
pleasures and frustrations of
lingering in bafflement.

The Small Words
The small words
almost no words
have the most force
exceed their sources
like weather from nothing
or barely a breath or
a thought all but there
a look that could show
strewn letters or
half-sentences full of novels
or half-mornings full of
lifetimes.
L. Ward Abel’s work has appeared in hundreds of journals (Rattle, Versal, The Reader, Worcester
Review, Riverbed Review, Honest Ulsterman, Main Street Rag, others), including two nominations
for a Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net, and he is the author of three full collections and ten
chapbooks of poetry.
Russian Fruit
For Ирина
On my birthday,
you sent me fruit,
from Moscow with love.
The sour taste of long distance
made palatable by the fructose kiss of
orange, pear, kiwi.
Even an avocado,
which is a fruit of sorts.
Finally, a lemon,
as we need some bitterness in us
to know what sweetness is.
I peeled back the flesh, thinking of you.
If you wanna get it done
right, it must start with
poetry.
In the following pages, a report of RESONANS FRINGE festival preparations
by Madam Neverstop.
On October 8, 2024, we will meet at Red Door for a
welcome reception and official opening ceremony,
accompanied by the live music of Thomas Büchelm
from 14 to 18. Red Door is located at Møllegade 23a
kld, 2200 Nørrebro.
From there, after the proper meet and greet with the
many artists, poets, performers and creators joining
us to the festival, the idea is to leave together, in a
type of “masa alegre” or poetic mass, to do the short
walk towards La Fee Verte. There might or might
not be poetic interruptions along the way, but you
should keep in mind it is approx a 15. min walk
from Red Door to La Fee Verte (and much longer
on the way back since one leaves this absinthe bar
zigzagging).
We will have the great honor of featuring Pita
Ochoa, Stephen James Smith and Lalo Barrubia, with
our admired guest MC and collaborator Dominic
Williams. Bring your poems, in all languages. After
the open mic, the celebrations conclude (for the day)
with a glorious eperformance by the Poet Bastards.
+ PERFORMANCE
BY THE POET
BASTARDS
029

030

The 9th and 10th of October we
have quite a mixture of offerings
for you, prepared by yours truly,
Madam Neverstop, in a way so it
also represents the unfolding of
any issue of Red Door Magazine.
There must be great art, so it leaves
you speechless. For visual art is
poetry that speaks to any language,
and the base of Red Door has always
been to serve as a platform for
great art. So of course we begin the
exhibition offerings with someone
previously featured on Red Door,
British artist Kirsten Reynolds.
Reynolds conveys in paint a sense
of process in which the outcome
is not defined beforehand. Some
are like the essence of landscape,
where form is minimal. Others
though, look like a further stage of
dissolution. They don’t express an
aggressive sense of destruction, but
are gorgeously, sensually molten and
cataclysmic with shreds of landscape
whose shape eludes you on close
examination.’ Simone Witney,
Hastings Independent Press, 2017
You can listen to a conversation with
Kirsten on the Red Transmissions
Podcast.
Another great focus of this second
day of the festival must be the
diversity of our network,because,
how else to represent a proyect that
was started in the Big Apple, and
which has traveled to all continents
and received poetry, art, essays and
other material in so many languages?
We will be at Literatur Haus in
Nørrebro, a cultural space which often
serves as the background of literary
festivals, book releases and other
features of the Danish community.
For a multimedia, multilingual and
multicultural event, we will be
counting with the presence of several
local and international poets, among
them Michael Amitin who joins us
from France, Lalo Barrubia (Uruguay/
Sweden), Elzbieta Wojcik- Leese
(Poland / UK / DK), a novel debut
by Pablo Saborio, a presentation
of Miserabilia - my Swedish debut
collaboration with the poet Jonas
Ellerström, who will also join us
with his band Blago Bung... and to
conclude, an experimental music
performance by Chilean composer
Tomas Gubbins.
031

Also at Literatur Haus, when visiting
the Cafe, you will be able to enjoy
the beauty and colorful contrast of
peaceful pale figures, possibly aliens,
who sometimes seem to be ever so
slowly being taken away by the rising
tide... I am referring of course to the
work of Danish artist HG Madsen,
whose curious, dormant, distant
characters adorn the pages of this
issue of Red Door.
So you see, on day two of RESONANS
Festival you’ll have already enjoyed
more art, music and poetry, than
most do in a normal month. So come
ready. The poetry takeover begins!
On October 10th we will celebrate
the multimedia work of Danish artist
Esben Holk, whose exhibition FEED
will be at Red Door, and I too will
make that random apparition with my
paintings, taking over Figur.dk for a
solo show, something I haven’t done
since 2016... and there will of course
be receptions and bubbles, smiles
and good music at each happening.
But since what we’re doing is a
festival and not just a little talent
show, at our neighbors on Møllegade
ART LAB 21 we will have FIMARA,
a nomadic concert series that will
include 3 sets of a curated selection
of artists specific for this occasion.
And since the whole idea of
throwing a festival that celebrates
15 years of work is to show the world
how relevant, fresh, young and well
informed we remained, we figured it
was time to go dancing.
There will actually be two concert
nights at Spillestedet STENGADE,
which is a very special venue because
of its underground history and legacy
of music since the 70s. There will be
great DJs and bands performing, so
bring earplugs and dancing shoes,
because it’s only Wednesday and
we’re neverstopping.
On October 11, we start the day
with an exhibition by Colombian-
American artist Jose Osorio, and a
film screening of Umbrella House, by
Catalina Santamaria. To give you a bit
more context, Umbrella House is one
of the squatted houses in New York’s
Lower East Side, (the house I arrived
to when I was 13, and which saw Red
Door be born), and its great legacy of
underground poetry, art and music,
is displayed in this documentary...
featuring among the squatters that
made this house, our painter, Jose
Osorio. Beautiful, isn’t it?
When you arrive to Copenhagen
you might feel like the whole city
is dressed up to celebrate Red
Door’s sweet 15, but no, close,
but no. It just so happens that on
October 11 Copenhagen celebrates
KULTURNATTEN, an incredible
evening that opens up libraries,
museums, and other cultural centers
throughout the city. All you need to
do is go to the website, or to any 7-11
in the city, and get your KULTURPAS,
which will grant you free movement
through the public transit system of
the city, and FREE entrance to the
very large selection of events taking
place simultaneously in the little
mermaid’s city.
What does one do when arranging
a festival to show off, even when
the entire city is having a cultural
happening? Well, say no more! We
of course decided to throw a street
party. We’ve partnered up with our
neighbors and other collaborators
in our street, Møllegade, and the
next street over, so as to have all
exhibitions open, a bar, a food truck,
and several exciting events, plus
poetry, live music and DJs. So this
day is a special thing, and it is called
RESONANS ER OS.
At ArkBooks, which are our neighbors
at the beginning of the street, you
can enjoy a WORLDTHREADING
screening of poetry films, and record
your own poems on one of the
phones of our Poetic Phonotheque.
Visit their bookshop to listen to
live readings of poetry in various
languages through the day.
At Literatur Haus, there will be an
exquisite program that combines
poetry work from our festival guests
with actors and musicians who will
bring it to the stage...
All exhibitions previously mentioned
will, as I mentioned, be available
for you to visit, meaning art walks
gallore... and somehow we’ve gotten
so lucky that we’ll even count with
the participation of the local Nørrebro
choir to start the festivities of the
evening, which will start at 16.
Baren i Kronborggade 3 and
ESCHO are the curators of the band
selection, and we count with our
friends Speaker Korner, Circle Work,
Christian Pallin and Morten Mejer to
get us dancing all through the night.
I kinda figured the 12th of October
should be an easy-peasy chill kind of
start because we all went to bed late.
So after you find your brunch you’re
welcome to join us at 13 at Literatur
Haus, where Red Door will be hosting
The Bound Beat - a multilingual
bookfair of independent publishers
and bookshops fron the Nordic
countries.
I asked Nørrebro’s local choir to join
us again here, because I feel majestic
when I say that’s how we start our
bookfair. We will count with the
presence of local Danish favorites,
such as beat poet Claus Høxbroe
and filmmaker Lars Movin, and the
collective CKultura will be doing a
multimedia performance... but I’ve
also called upon the Nordic network
to feature a variety of voices from
near and distant lands. Among them,
Kristin Svava (Iceland), Magnus
Grehn (Sweden) Grace Wilentz
(Ireland), Angela Garcia (Colombia/
Sweden), Efrin Gonzales (Guatemala/
DK), Daniel Malpica (Mexico/Finland),
and the band Två Män from Sweden.
Exciting, isn’t it? The festival
concludes on Oct 13 with NATURE
& CULTURE - International Poetry
Film Fest at EMPIRE BIO, co-directed
by Patrick Horner. We received
over 500 films, out of which we will
be presenting a selection in the
Animation, Short Film, Experimental,
Poetry Film and Documentary
categories, along with director talks,
and yes, poetry!
So come celebrate RESONANS
with us. Join us as we let our poetic
desire run freely in the streets of
Copenhagen, in the name of Red
Door. We takeover. We exist.
If you wanna get it done right,
it must be done with poetry.
be at the headquarters of the Phonotheque in its
respective countries.
The dream is now a reality. Look for the red
FONOTEK in Sweden, Finland and Copenhagen,
starting in 2024, and in all the events where the
Poetic Phonotheque is present... now all you gotta
do is pickup that handset, and leave your poem
after the tone.
