2023, I am filled with immense pride and anticipation. It is with great pleasure that I extend a
warm and hearty welcome to all of you our cherished Classic fans, esteemed alumni, dedicated
This annual gathering transcends the boundaries of a mere football game; it represents a
convergence of heritage, a showcase of future leaders, and a celebration of the enduring bonds
that unite us. It is a moment when fierce rivalries are set aside in favor of camaraderie, where old
friendships are rekindled, and new ones are forged.
As we come together today, standing proudly as graduates and advocates of Albany State
University and Fort Valley State University, let us never lose sight of the paths that brought us
gratitude to these institutions, a way of giving back that holds immense significance. Your
unwavering support is the very lifeblood that sustains this treasured event.
For an impressive span of 33 years, it has been my distinct privilege and pleasure to serve
as Chairman of the Fountain City Classic. Over the past seven months, a dedicated cadre of
volunteers who have toiled ceaselessly to ensure the success of this week-long celebration. I
extend my heartfelt gratitude to President Dr. Marion Fedrick of Albany State University and Dr.
Paul Jones of Fort Valley State University and their respective teams, our committed corporate
sponsors, ardent FCC fans and supporters, and last and certainly not least, the Fountain City
Classic Host Committee, who have poured their hearts into making this event a resounding
success. It is through the collective efforts of each segment of our support system that we have
achieved what seemed impossible.
The Fountain City Classic, in my view has evolved into one of the most thrilling events in the
state of Georgia, and for this, we extend our gratitude to God. Once again, I thank you for being
an integral part of this extraordinary journey. May you revel in the game and the conviviality it
brings, knowing that your presence makes all the difference.
With utmost sincerity and gratitude,
The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Setting the Standard in Intercollegiate Athletics for Over 100 Years
The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) was founded in 1913 and
today, more than 100 years later, the conference remains one of the nation’s most
viable forces in intercollegiate athletics.
On December 30, 1913, representatives of the following institutions met at Morehouse
College to consider the regulations of intercollegiate athletics among black colleges
in the southeast: Alabama State University, Atlanta University, Clark College, Fisk
University, Jackson College, Morehouse College, Morris Brown College, Talladega
College and Tuskegee Institute. The representatives formed a permanent organization
(The Southeastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) which has had a continuous history to the present. In 1929, they changed the name of this
organization to The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Two institutions have held continuous membership in the conference: Clark College (now Clark Atlanta University) and Tuskegee University. Other
institutions which have held membership are Alabama A&M University, Allen University, Benedict College, Bethune-Cookman University, Edward
Waters College, Fisk University, Florida A&M University, Jackson State University, Knoxville College, Morris Brown College, Rust College, Savannah
State University, South Carolina State University, Tennessee State University and Xavier University. In 2019-2020 season, the league will add
Savannah State University as their fourteenth official member.
The present membership is composed of fourteen different institutions in six states (Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio, South Carolina and
Tennessee): Albany State University, Benedict College, Central State University, Clark Atlanta University, Fort Valley State University, Kentucky State
University, Lane College, LeMoyne-Owen College, Miles College, Morehouse College, Paine College, Spring Hill College, and Tuskegee University.
The SIAC is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and participates on the Division II level. Annually, the SIAC sponsors
seven men’s championships (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, outdoor track & field and tennis) and six women’s championships
(basketball, cross country, outdoor track & field, softball, tennis and volleyball).
As the second oldest historically black college and university athletic conference, the SIAC has one of the most storied histories in all of the NCAA.
Many of the conference’s former athletes and coaches have transcended to larger-than-life characters that continue to be monumental in the world
of sports. Furthermore, the chronicles of many SIAC programs are have been vital to the foundation of American society.
SIAC schools are known for being staunch competitors, where many have flourished to the realms of national and global celebrity. As a whole, the
conference has staked its claim to more than 50 team and individual national championships.
This is Albany State University!
History of Albany State University
Founded in 1903, Albany
State University continues to
provide leadership in academic
excellence, social change, and
economic impact. A nationally
top-ranked HBCU, ASU serves
an increasingly diverse student
body and community by offering
a uniquely comprehensive array
of programs, from associate to
graduate degrees.
Joseph Winthrop Holley, the
institution’s founder and first
president, established the
Albany Bible and Manual
Training Institute in Albany,
Georgia. The new school was
successful in its mission to
provide religious and basic
education, as well as teacher
training to the local black
population. In 1917, the state of Georgia began providing financial support to the school, granting it two-year status. The school
added training in agriculture and was renamed the Georgia Normal and Agricultural College. The institution eventually joined
the University System of Georgia and, in 1943, was granted four-year status. Concentrating on teacher education and home
economics, the school was again renamed, this time as Albany State College. Over the next few years, the College added
majors in the humanities, social sciences, education, and health sciences. After increasing the number of faculty with doctorate
degrees by more than fifty percent, Albany State College began offering graduate degrees in 1981. With the growing success
of the graduate programs, the Board of Regents, in 1996, approved the renaming of the institution to Albany State University. In
the 21st century, the University continued to strengthen its mission, attracting nationally renowned scholars and researchers
to its faculty and preparing students for leadership. As ASU continued to grow, so did a newly established junior college in the
Albany area. Founded in 1963, Albany Junior College provided students in Southwest Georgia and beyond access to higher
education. When doors officially opened in 1966, 620 students enrolled in the institution. In 1987, the USG removed the word
junior from all of its two-year institutions and the College became Darton College.
As part of its mission to serve its students and the region, Darton College committed to expanding its programs in nursing
and the health sciences, expanding to 13 programs. As a result of this and other initiatives, such as the expansion of
online programs, enrollment more than doubled after the year 2000. In this period, the campus facilities also grew,
including the addition of a 427-seat theater and a massive physical education complex, among other improvements.
In 2012, upon USG approval of the College’s first four-year program, in nursing, the institution’s name was changed
to Darton State College. On November 10, 2015, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia voted
unanimously to begin the process of consolidating Albany State University and Darton State College. That same day,
Dr. Arthur N. Dunning became ASU’s permanent president.
The newly established university retains the name Albany State University and unifies the distinction, values, and missions
of the two institutions. One of Georgia’s diverse, educational gems, Albany State University continues a combined legacy of
more than 100 years of excellence in teaching and learning. The University prepares students to be effective contributors to a
globally diverse society, where knowledge and technology create opportunities for personal and professional success. During
this impressive growth and development, the University has been guided by the following presidents: Joseph Winthrop Holley,
D.D., LL.D. (1903-1943) Aaron Brown, Ph.D., LL.D., Ed.D. (1943-1954) William H. Dennis, LL.D. (1954-1965) Thomas Miller
Jenkins, J.D., LL.D. (1965-1969) Charles L. Hayes, Ed.D. (1969-1980) Billy C. Black, Ph.D. (1980-1996) Portia Holmes Shields,
Ph.D. (1996-2005) Everette J. Freeman, Ed.D. (2005-2013) Arthur N. Dunning, Ph.D. (2013-2018) Marion Ross Fedrick, M.P.A.
(2018-present).
Fort Valley State University
Empower the Possible.
Fort Valley State University is a talent
incubator for students who believe in their
brilliance. Located in the heart of Georgia,
FVSU combines the personal attention and
family feel of a small, private college with the
resources and research found at larger public
universities.
FVSU is home to thousands of students
discovering the genius within themselves
and exploring their extraordinary potential for
leadership under the guidance of highly accomplished faculty. Located on the second-largest acreage of any Georgia
university, it is the only university in the world which at once is a University System of Georgia institution, a historically
black university, and an 1890 land-grant institution, with a directive to use knowledge to improve the lives of students and
non-students alike.
The FVSU family has shared a love of invention and innovation, and embraced a culture where discovery is celebrated.
No matter where you start in life, we believe that education is the surest way to make a difference in the world and achieve
your dreams.
FVSU is one of the most affordable colleges in the country because our goal is to make sure anyone with talent and
desire can use education as a means to advance in life. Yet, excellence is demanded across our campuses, from our
faculty members, who are respected researchers, instructors, and authors, to our students, who accept the challenges of
leadership, scholarship, and professionalism.
Historically referred to as “the light in the valley,” FVSU’s legacy is built upon the belief that every human being is entitled
to limitless learning and the benefits of knowledge. Leveraging the reputation for excellence FVSU has built since 1895, the
university is preparing students to embrace their genius as future global leaders and enabling discovery that will make real
what is only now imagined. That’s why our motto and tagline is “Empower the Possible.”
Renae Myles Payne - Director of Athletics
Coming on board in March, Fort Valley State University announced its new Director of Athletics
as Renae Myles Payne, Ed.D. With more than 25 years of experience in intercollegiate
athletics, she joins FVSU from the University of Miami (UM), where she served as the senior
associate athletic director for administration and chief diversity officer.
As FVSU’s new athletic director, Myles Payne will oversee the administration, development,
and planning for advancing the University’s NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletic programs.
FVSU is a part of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division.
At the University of Miami, Myles Payne led the sports administrators group responsible for
the day-to-day oversight of the Hurricanes 18 varsity sports as well as oversight of team
travel and the Anthony Travel agreement, saving the department more than $200,000
annually. Other accomplishments include:
• Overseeing the program’s most lucrative Adidas equipment contract and development
of policies and procedures for the department.
• Securing a $50,000 gift toward the diving facility project slated to begin this summer.
NCAA recognized the department as a model institution for diverse hiring processes. In addition, Winthrop increased ticket sales
and facility rental revenue by 170% under her leadership.
Myles Payne is an active leader on the national scene. She is the vice president of the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association
(MOAA) and will assume the presidency this June during the MOAA/NACDA Convention in Orlando, Florida.
She has served on NCAA committees and is a regular presenter at NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of
Athletics), CABMA (College Athletics Business Management Association), and Women Leaders in College Sports. In 2019, she
Chris Myers - Sports Information Director
Chris Myers is in his fourth year as Fort Valley State’s Sports Information Director. Myers
came to the FVSU athletic department in September of 2018 after he spent the prior
three-and-a-half years as the sports information director at Wheeling Jesuit University in
Wheeling, West Virginia.
A 22-year veteran of the sports information field, Myers led the sports information offices
over his career at McMurry University (Abilene, Texas), Denison University (Granville,
Ohio), East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania and The University of Virginia’s
College at Wise.
Myers was also part of the Humboldt State University (Arcata, California) athletics
department before Wheeling Jesuit as the sports information and communications
specialist for almost two years.
While taking some time away from the college sports information field, Myers held the
position of sports editor of his hometown newspaper, The Spirit, in Punxsutawney,
Pennsylvania from August 2012 to July 2013.
Myers earned his bachelors of science in communications from Clarion University and his
master’s in sport management from East Stroudsburg University.
Myers and his wife, Andrea, and their two children – Ezequias and Annelise - are happy to be part of the Fort Valley State family.
Shawn Gibbs - Head Coach
The second campaign of the Shawn Gibbs era in ‘The Valley’ begins with great optimism.
The Fort Valley State head football coach aims to build upon the solid opening season at
the Wildcats helm.
Gibbs and the Wildcats posted an 8-2 record last fall for the program’s best season in
over a decade. FVSU’s first year under Gibbs included victories over SIAC West champ
Tuskegee in the Red Tails Classic and Albany State in the Fountain City Classic. His top
players, Emanuel Wilson and Kelvin Durham, earned the SIAC Player, Offensive, Newcomer
and Freshman of the Years awards between the two.
Coming to program in February of 2022, FVSU gave Gibbs the reins of his first program as
head coach.
Gibbs has an extensive background in coaching that includes 19 seasons as both an
assistant head coach and positions coach at the collegiate level. His coaching experience
includes stints at North Carolina A&T University, North Carolina Central University, and
Grambling State University.
Gibbs became the North Carolina A&T assistant head coach and running backs coach
under legendary head coach Rod Broadway in 2011. His responsibilities included
coordinating meetings, implementing game strategies, and recruiting players. During Gibbs’ tenure at N.C. A&T, every season,
except one, a running back rushed for over 1,000 yards. Under the tutelage of Gibbs, many N.C. A&T running backs have had
successful careers.
After playing college football at North Carolina Central, Gibbs began his coaching career at N.C. A&T in 2002, where he served
as tight ends coach. During this time, he helped create offensive game plans and assisted in teaching football fundamentals
and techniques. He spent one year at N.C. A&T, before returning to his alma mater, North Carolina Central, to serve as running
backs coach. His expertise helped lead the team to consecutive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships and
National Collegiate Athletic Conference Division II playoff berths (2005-2006). During the 2006 season, the Eagles led the CIAA
in scoring offense, total offense, and rushing offense.
