Darry family’s sporting 

star continues to shine

A MEMORABLE few weeks for 

West Melton’s Darry family has 

got even better. 

Charlotte Darry, 21, was part 

of the New Zealand coxed four 

that won gold at the under 

23 world championships at St 

Catharines, Canada. 

Darry, alongside teammates 

Isobel Eliadis-Watson, Jane 

Schellekins, Orla Fitzgerald 

and coxswain Oliver Duncan 

– who is a student at Lincoln 

University – 

finished the 

2000m race in 7 

mins 3 secs, half 

a boat length 

ahead of secondplaced

States. 

The win was 

extra special for 

the crew – they

were beaten by the USA in the 

preliminary race, more than 

two seconds off the pace, but 

overturned that deficit to take 

gold. 

“It was great, fantastic,” 

said Charlotte’s father Hunter 

Darry, who watched the Friday 

morning race at home with son 

Sam – who several hours later 

was en route to South Africa 

with the All Blacks.

“They’d got second to the

knew where they went wrong

they just kept working on it 

and held on for a win, so it was 

good.”

NATURAL AREAS and more 

planting are what people wanted 

most in a new 99ha district park 

on the edge of Rolleston. 

Results from a council survey 

showed the most popular 

requests were natural areas and 

planting (1321 respondents) 

followed by tracks and trails 

(1095), and the third was grassy 

open space (822). 

The majority of the park 

is funded by the fees paid by 

developers, not rates. 

The council bought the land 

on the corner of Levi Rd and 

Weedons Rd in 2016 for $8 

million, of which 66 per cent 

was funded by development 

contributions. 

The council has budgeted 

$28.6m over the next 10 years to 

complete stage one, 87 per cent of 

which is funded by development 

contributions. 

While the park is anticipated to 

be completed in three stages, the 

exact number and when further 

stages will be completed is yet to 

be decided. 

The council aims to have a 

master plan completed for signoff 

by the end of the year, with a 

plan going out for consultation 

early next year.

35ha and once the full 99ha is

areas like paddling pools for 

children, a disc golf course, and 

dog-friendly areas. 

A stadium will not make the 

cut, with less than 10 people 

supporting it. However, council 

major projects manager Phillip 

Millar said the 

park will include 

an event space

used for sport.

the alternative option would be 

good as long as it had adequate 

facilities such as changing rooms 

or a pavilion.

HORSE RESCUED 

Rolleston volunteer firefighters 

freed a horse stuck on a fence on 

Newtons Rd between Rolleston and 

West Melton, last week. Fire chief 

Marty Tier said a vet sedated the 

horse while firefighters lifted it off 

the fence. Tier said the horse had 

minor injuries. 

CELL TOWER PLANS 

Spark is expanding its cellular 

network and has been assessing 

sites in the Lincoln area. A Spark 

spokesperson said its build partner, 

Connexa, is acquiring a suitable 

location. The spokesperson said it 

plans to build one tower in Lincoln 

and three others across the rest of 

the district in the next 18 months. 

CORRECTION 

In the August 14 edition of the 

Selwyn Times, a Lincoln home 

on the market was incorrectly 

identified as being priced at about 

$945,000. This was an error. The 

price is $899,000. Selwyn Times 

apologises for the mistake.

Close call for hut residents 

after Rakaia River overflows

FLOOD prevention measures 

worked “like clockwork” to save 

the Rakaia Huts from potential 

damage on Saturday. 

Council, Environment 

Canterbury and hut residents 

had been monitoring the Rakaia 

River all last week after high 

tides pushed shingle into 

the river mouth, creating a 

semi-blockage. 

Council head of emergency 

management Al Lawn said these 

factors, along with rain from the 

high country, led to water levels 

rising and getting close to the 

huts. 

Hut residents were alerted 

to flood warnings from ECan’s 

detection system about 7am on 

Saturday. 

The council’s duty officer then

“I’m sure anyone down there 

will support pretty much the 

fact that it goes like clockwork. 

But you’re fighting a wild river 

of nature, so she will do what 

she wants and we’ve just got to 

deal with it.”

Mayor clarifies 

speed limit 

preference

MAYOR SAM Broughton has 

clarified his comments about 

raising the speed limit on the 

Southern Motorway. 

Last week Selwyn Times reported 

Broughton was backing 

an increase in speed of up to 

120km/h on the motorway, which 

was part of a council submission 

to the Ministry of Transport. 

When the submission received 

retrospective endorsement from 

councillors, Broughton was still 

on an overseas trip and not present 

at the meeting. 

Broughton told Selwyn Times he 

still wants a speed limit increase 

on the motorway, but said it is 

more likely to be 110 km/h. 

“I think the Southern Motorway 

is a road that’s been built to the 

same standard as the Waikato 

Expressway where the speed is 

110km/h. The Government asked 

about up to 120km/h; when I look 

around the rest of the country the 

speeds are at 110km/h.” 

Broughton’s clarification puts 

him in line with the Automobile 

Association Canterbury West 

Coast chair John Skevington. 

Christchurch Mayor Phil 

Mauger is happy with the current 

100km/h limit.

Selwyn District Council approves multi-purpose 

community centre for Leeston 

A new multi-purpose community centre is coming 

for Ellesmere. 

After taking on feedback from the community 

through the Long-Term Plan, the Council has 

committed $16.1 million to a multi-purpose 

community centre with library services, 

which will be called Whata Rau, a name gifted 

by Te Taumutu Rūnanga. 

A reference advisory group will be formed, chaired 

by Councillor Grant Miller, which will lead the design, 

layout, and functionality of the multi-purpose facility, 

working with Council staff considering the Council’s 

overall approach including future projects planned 

for the area, budgets and council policies and 

processes as well as operational considerations. 

If you are keen to be involved in the project and 

believe you have useful perspectives that could be 

taken on board, please consider putting your name

your interestto be part of this group at the drop-ins,

ELLESMERE College wants 

changes to how relieving teachers 

can be recruited to solve shortage 

issues. 

Acting principal Antony French 

has approached the Minister 

of Education Erica Stanford 

saying the current system needs 

overhauling. 

Ellesmere College has eight 

relievers on its roster which is not 

enough, he said. 

“They are generally retired 

teachers or they are teachers that 

have been on maternity leave 

and so they have limited time 

available,” French said. 

“It’s not like we’ve got eight extra 

staff that are available all the time. 

It’s literally a jigsaw puzzle that my 

release coordinator has to juggle at 

six o’clock every morning.” 

French has pitched a short 

term reliever training course to 

Stanford.. 

“I’ve suggested it to a couple of 

other people in the past about how 

it would be quite nice if there was 

a short relief teacher course that 

you could do through one of the 

training providers. 

“(They would learn) simple 

skills, relationship building, some 

of the admin stuff, health and 

safety, those sorts of things that 

keep them in hand

after a class, but they wouldn’t 

necessarily have to be a fully 

trained, qualified teacher. 

“That’s an idea that I had and 

I thought well, why not just 

head straight to the top. I’m sure 

Stanford has got plenty of ideas of

don’t necessarily think of other 

things so I thought well, why not 

share?” 

Currently, relievers are hired on 

casual contract and aren’t required 

to take on every class that needs 

covering. Because of this, they’re 

not always available. 

French himself had to cover two 

classes in one morning last week. 

Last term, the school had to 

send home senior students for the 

day so teachers could cover the 

junior classes. 

“We do everything we possibly 

can to make sure there’s quality 

teachers in front of the students 

every time. 

“If they are required to study 

from home, then that does put 

pressure on them. 

“I would like to think that 

they are responsible enough to 

do the work, but they’ve got to 

be responsible enough to do it 

themselves.”

economic activity fell slightly by 

0.2 per cent to $3.585 million, in

Lyall said the high interest rates 

had slowed down construction 

in the past 12 months. But the 

growth in value of consents in 

the June quarter had signalled a 

changing momentum towards a 

building resurgence, he said.

be in the right place at the right 

time to get the opportunity.”

“We are all concerned about 

the current cost-of-living crisis, 

so it is extremely encouraging 

to see that the Selwyn economy 

is still robust and many of our 

residents are able to support 

local,” said Lyall.

Community 

at the heart 

of brothers’ 

dedication 

to serving 

For brothers Grant and 

Lloyd Clausen, serving 

their community is in 

their blood. Reporter 

Daniel Alvey finds out 

why they do it 

ACROSS THREE generations, the 

Clausen family have given more 

than 160 years to the Leeston 

Volunteer Fire Brigade. 

Now Grant has become the 

second in his family to clock up 

50 years of service, behind his 

brother Lloyd who has served for 

55 years. 

“When you’re young, you want 

to join the fire brigade. If you join 

early enough and you live long 

enough, and you stick at it, time 

just ticks by,” Grant said. 

“It doesn’t seem like 50 years at 

all to me.” 

The Clausen family’s involvement 

with the brigade began with 

Grant and Lloyd’s grandfather 

Frank who served 15 years, followed 

by their father Bertram 

with 43 years of service. 

Grant joined the brigade in 1974 

when he was 17, five years after 

Lloyd had signed up as a 15-yearold. 

Grant said he was a bit jealous 

of his brother. 

“Grandad (Frank) had been in 

and my father (Bertram) had been 

in and Lloyd had joined so I was 

quite keen. 

“There was a little bit of jealousness 

so I was quite keen to have a 

go,” Grant said. 

Looking back, Grant said he 

remembered a number of big fires 

in the Leeston area. 

“Big factory fires are quite 

impressive when you turn up. The 

honey factory here has caught fire 

a couple of times and that was 

quite interesting. 

“We’ve been to a lot of the 

plantation fires and they’d be a 

number of days at each one.” 

Grant said fatal accidents were a 

difficult part of the job. 

“Unfortunately, the things that 

stick in your mind are the fatal 

accidents we’ve been to. It’s sad for 

those families, but you do what 

you have to do and support the 

others around you.”

“When you’re young, you want to join the fire brigade. 

If you join early enough and you live long enough, 

and you stick at it, time just ticks by.”

Lloyd, who was chief of the 

brigade until 2020, said it can 

be difficult when you know the 

people involved. 

“Your professional body comes 

on and you just go ahead and do 

your job as a professional person 

and then reflect on it afterwards. 

“At the end of the day, if it’s a 

good save it’s gratifying,” he said. 

Grant also has a passion for 

competing in firefighting events. 

He has competed both locally and 

nationally in road crash rescue 

and waterways challenges. Most 

recently he was part of the 

Leeston team that competed at 

June’s national road crash rescue 

competition in Feilding. 

Alongside their involvement 

in the fire brigade, both have 

been involved in the community 

committee, and the Ellesmere 

Historical Society. 

Lloyd also volunteers for St 

John on the administration side 

and has helped run the Leeston 

Pool for the past 35 years. 

“There are heaps of people in 

the community like Grant and I 

who join multiple organisations 

and that’s the heart of your 

community,” Lloyd said. 

During the time the brothers 

have been in part of the brigade, 

Leeston’s population has grown 

from about 600 to almost 3000 

people. 

Said Grant: “The number of 

calls we’re getting is about four 

or five times the amount when I 

started. 

“There was a time when we both 

used to deliver newspapers and 

then we worked in the grocery . . . 

and you used to know everybody 

in the town that’s totally different 

now.” 

Grant, who was a saddler for 

about 40 years, is now preparing 

to relocate the house where the 

family’s saddlery was originally 

based to the Selwyn Heritage 

Centre. The saddlery business 

itself had previously moved to 

High St in Leeston. 

“We are going to rebuild the 

saddlery and I’ll be able to put the 

tools and things grandad used in 

that building back into it again.” 

Lloyd, a former electrician, 

is now a safety officer for lines 

company Orion. 

Leeston fire chief Matt Walker 

said Grant is humble and would 

not like the fuss of his celebration. 

“Having lived in Leeston and 

the surrounding area all his 

life he is a very strong believer 

in the value of volunteering, 

and how important it is to help 

communities grow and thrive,” 

he said.

Chef aids in capture

on the run was not what chef 

Glenn Manning expected while 

working at his food truck.

market at The

when his 

employee yelled 

for him to come 

outside. 

“I stepped

out of the food trailer to a dog 

coming running past me off 

the lead and then soon followed 

by a cop. It definitely got the 

adrenaline pumping,” Manning, 

a former Rolleston volunteer 

firefighter, told the Selwyn Times. 

Manning’s employee called for 

him after seeing two youths run 

around the truck. 

One climbed onto the car 

park roof and the other ran 

through the car park with the 

police officer and dog in close 

pursuit. 

The officer caught up with 

the youth and the police dog 

pounced, dragging him towards 

the footpath. 

The officer then called out to 

Manning. 

“He yelled out ‘oi come here’. 

At first, I looked around thinking 

he must be talking to another cop 

or something. Then he yelled out 

again and pointed at me.” 

Manning ran over to assist. 

He said the police officer threw 

him a pair of handcuffs and said: 

“Put the cuffs on him. Hold him 

down till back up arrives. 

“I was just thinking to just get 

in and get it done. When you’ve 

been asked for help by the cops 

you just jump in and assist,” said 

Manning. 

Once he had the suspect 

restrained, the officer ran off 

to deal with the other alleged 

offender. 

Manning figured out how 

to get the handcuffs on “pretty 

quickly”. 

He is no stranger to working 

with police, thanks to his time as 

a volunteer firefighter. 

The offender had been bitten in 

the calf by the police dog, 

so he did not struggle much 

while Manning restrained him 

with the handcuffs and a knee 

on the back. 

More police arrived to relieve 

Manning and arrest the suspect 

within a minute of the incident. 

“It’s definitely something you 

don’t see or get asked to do every 

day, that’s for sure,” Manning 

said. 

The experienced barbecue-style 

chef started The Smokin’ Que 

business in 2016, and focuses on 

catering while also taking part in 

cooking competitions. 

A police spokesperson said 

the two suspects were arrested 

for allegedly stealing a vehicle in 

Spreydon on the day of or the day 

before the arrests. 

They were spotted in the stolen 

vehicle in Kathleen Cres near 

The Hub shortly before Manning 

became involved about 5.30pm. 

The two youths fled through 

Denton Park before being located 

and arrested by the dog unit, the 

spokesperson said. 

When police were searching 

for the second youth, Manning 

returned to his food truck for a 

typical market evening. 

“The canine unit did yell out 

to me a bit later and say ‘thanks 

for your help.’ I appreciate them 

acknowledging that.”

Support, scorn for speed limit proposal 

KEEP THE SPEED limit at 100. 

In places like State Highway 1 at 

Cambridge (Waikato), 110km/h 

feels safe. 

However, with our on and 

off-ramps on the Southern 

Motorway, I have seen too 

many incidents of motorists 

attempting risky manoeuvres 

cutting across multiple lanes 

at ramps, not to mention 

aggressive motorists oblivious 

to safety and road conditions in 

the so called ‘fast lane’. 

The faster we go, the bigger 

the mess.

the motorway speed limit to 110

infrastructure at each end of the 

motorway being Rolleston and 

Brougham St to cope with it. All 

the time you make going faster 

will be lost sitting in longer 

queues. 

There will always be a backlog 

problem while there are traffic 

lights at each end. 

The traffic needs to be able to 

freely disperse, fewer options 

at Brougham St but NZTA 

need to add the second lane at 

Rolleston and extend the fourlaning 

beyond Burnham or get 

Ashburton District Council on 

board and go beyond Tinwald.

Incorporated Society vs. 

Charitable Trust 

Since our recent article Significant Changes 

ahead for Incorporated Societies we’ve 

received a lot of interest from Societies 

regarding the best course of action to 

ensure a smooth path to re-registration, 

avoiding de-registration! We are also 

privileged to have been engaged on a 

number of exciting community projects 

and initiatives. 

As part of that, we have had many 

people seek clarification on the 

difference between a charitable trust 

and an incorporated society. When 

establishing a not-for-profit organisation 

in New Zealand, choosing the right 

legal structure is crucial to ensuring its 

long-term success. The key distinctions 

between the two as follows: 

Charitable Trusts are generally best 

suited to organisations focused on 

using accumulated funds or assets 

for philanthropic activities, such as 

advancing education, relieving poverty, 

or supporting community welfare. A 

charitable trust is governed by trustees 

who hold and manage the trust’s funds 

and assets according to the terms of a 

trust deed, which outlines the charitable 

purpose/s of the trust and the powers of 

the trustees. 

There are no ‘members’ of a charitable 

trust, and decision-making is entirely 

up to the trustee/s without the need for 

general meetings or committees. As a 

result, charitable trusts typically provide 

less flexibility in governance. Trustees 

bearing all responsibility, and appropriate 

documentation must be completed 

to appoint or remove trustees. The 

trust deed sets out how many trustees 

there would be. If there are a number 

of trustees they can incorporate as a 

“board of trustees”. This provides two 

meaningful benefits: (1) The board, 

rather than the trustees, would enter 

into all obligations, meaning liability 

sits with the board and not the trustees 

personally; and (2) A charitable trust 

board can continue into perpetuity and is 

unaffected by changes to the trustees. 

Charitable trusts can benefit from tax 

relief, provided they meet specific criteria. 

Incorporated Societies are generally 

more suited to member-driven 

organisations, such as sports clubs, 

cultural groups, or advocacy bodies, 

which provide activities, events and 

benefits to members. An incorporated 

society is a separate legal entity from 

its members, meaning it can enter into 

contracts, own property, and sue or be 

sued in its own name. Decision-making 

is democratic – that is, the members 

all have the right to vote and make 

decisions, although members periodically 

elect a committee who have the powers 

needed to manage the society’s affairs 

This structure provides greater flexibility 

in governance. However, incorporated 

societies are subject to stricter regulatory 

requirements, including annual financial 

reporting and the need to operate 

under a formal constitution that meets 

both the society’s purpose and practical 

management and requirements set out 

in legislation. There are also minimum 

member requirements and therefore this 

type of entity won’t suit all organisations.

BRICK BONANZA: Last year’s Bricktacular event was a big success and 

Darfield Primary School’s PTA are hoping for even more this year. 

Lego show raising funds 

to replace playground 


THE ORGANISERS of a Lego exhibition 

are hoping it will be bigger and better than 

the debut event last year. 

The Darfield Bricktacular on Saturday is 

a fundraiser organised by Darfield Primary 

School’s PTA, in conjunction with the 

House of Bricks. Last year it raised $8700 to 

upgrade the school’s sport shed. 

This year funds are being raised for a new 

playground after significant roll-growth 

meant part of the current playground had to 

be replaced by temporary classrooms. 

The school has raised $24,000 of the 

estimated $150,000 needed through discos, 

a golf tournament, sausage sizzles and 

catering at winter sports events. 

Darfield Primary has seen its roll rise 

to 287 pupils, an increase of more than 70 

since 2019, and is expecting the roll to grow 

to about 300 students next year. 

PTA member and Bricktacular 

organiser Maria MacFarlane said parts 

of the playground were removed to 

accommodate the new classrooms, as it 

was the only space available on the school 

site. 

The Bricktacular will feature 25 displays, 

a brick-filled play area, and an all-ages 

competition where builders can bring 

along a Lego invention for judging on the 

day. 

There will also be a sausage sizzle, bake 

sale and selling raffle tickets. 

After this year, the PTA plans to make 

the Bricktacular a bi-annual event.

Ward boundaries are 

supposed to be determined 

by communities of interest; 

however, some have been split to 

meet the population rule. 

Elected members should represent 

roughly the same number 

of people (+/- 10 per cent). Since 

2021, our population has grown 

13 per cent, and there is now an 

uneven number of people represented 

by each councillor. 

By continually changing the 

ward boundaries, are we losing 

where our communities consider 

they belong? 

For example, Aylesbury is 

currently in the Ellesmere Ward.

four to three, and reduced the 

boundary size, giving part of this 

to Ellesmere and Malvern.

Malvern and Ellesmere as 

they may not be able to meet 

the +/- 10 per cent population

and cuisine at CultureFest 

The countdown to CultureFest is on, with 

just over two weeks until it all kicks off! 

CultureFest brings over 30 different cultures to 

the Lincoln Event Centre on Sunday 15 September, 

10am – 3pm. Fiza Abdul Rahman from returning 

food vendor Fezzlicious says they are excited 

about promoting the beauty of Malaysian culture 

and cuisine, offering this through their delicious, 

culturally rich halal meals. 

Fund helps inspire the beginnings of emerging artists 

On the hallway walls of the Lincoln Event Centre, 

artwork from emerging artists can be viewed 

and purchased. 

These artworks have been proudly crafted by 

members of the Art Group of Lincoln, who meet 

twice a month at the Lincoln Event Centre. 

Formed in 2003, this group now has 30 members 

aged 35 to 96 and is open to anyone interested in 

art, who drop in to sessions funded through the 

Council’s Creative Communities Scheme. At the 

sessions, members enjoy connecting with like-minded 

individuals and learning from art tutors. 

Tertiary Scholarship applications closing 

Applications for the Council’s Tertiary Scholarship 

to help fund fees for our rangitahi close at 5pm on 

Wednesday 11 September. 

Currently studying in his first year of Health Science 

at the University of Otago, Angus Hyslop says the 

scholarship he received last year helped cover a laptop 

and an iPad which have been essential to his study. 

University of Canterbury Bachelor of Science student 

Mason Thompson says he put the money he received 

from the scholarship towards his student fees, which 

has helped relieve financial pressures and allowed him 

to focus more on his studies. Another recipient who 

is studying engineering at University of Canterbury, 

Finlay Cotton says that the scholarship can make 

a real difference to someone who might otherwise 

struggle financially to attend university.

than the time it takes to complete the application.”

Representation Review 

We are asking for people’s feedback on our 

proposal for future representation arrangements 

around the number of councillors and community 

boards we have and the shape of our wards. 

The Council’s initial proposal for our future 

representation arrangements includes reducing the 

number of councillors from 10 to eight, and having no 

community boards. 

This proposal is based on research and feedback 

received from the community this year. 

Other matters the Council has decided on are 

to continue using the first past the post voting 

system, and to not establish Māori wards, following 

consultation with local rūnaka who have indicated they 

do not support having a Māori ward at this stage.

SOUTHBRIDGE School pupils 

were among hundreds who have 

learnt about truck and road 

safety, thanks to a collaboration 

between the council and HEB 

Construction. 

Southbridge was the last of 

eight school visits across the 

district over the past two terms, 

which saw 537 pupils take part 

in interactive safety sessions run 

by HEB Construction and the 

council’s road safety team. 

HEB Construction brought 

two trucks and a digger to 

each session while Waste 

Management attended with a 

rubbish collection truck. 

The council’s emergency 

management team taught pupils 

what to do in an emergency, and 

what to do if they saw council 

vehicles with lights and sirens on 

the road. Pupils also learned how 

to navigate footpath closures. 

Students were able to sit inside 

the vehicles to experience what 

drivers can and cannot see on 

the road, and how to safely get a 

driver’s attention. 


As part of the visit, HEB 

Construction introduced a new 

20-metre tanker truck and invited 

pupils to suggest names for it. The 

winning name will be displayed 

on the truck, along with the 

winning school’s logo.

team is competing in the A Premiership 

South Island Secondary Schools Tournament 

in Timaru from the 2nd- 5th September. 

Twelve players are attending along with their 

coach Mark Bolton, Manager, Jess Martin, 

and tournament referee, Jonty Bennet. 

Fresh off a successful run in the local 

Thomson Trophy competition, the team 

performed well in the round-robin stages 

and won their semi-final match against 

Hornby High School. 

They will face Hagley Community College in 

the Thomson Trophy final on Monday, 

26 August. 

The team, consisting of players from Years 

10 to 13, benefits from a mix of experience 

and development opportunities for future 

years. The team has been putting in hours of 

practice as they prepare for the upcoming 

tournament. With unwavering enthusiasm 

and dedication, players have been refining 

their skills, and building strong team 

dynamics.

Greyhounds and cats can be friends 

Do you dream of adopting a sleek and 

friendly greyhound but fear that your 

fluffy cat would be too enticing to resist 

chasing? Greyhounds and cats don’t 

mix, right? It’s time to lay that myth to 

rest. Adobe Kennels wants to dispel the 

misconception about greyhounds living 

with cats or small dogs. 

Greyhounds are an ancient breed 

of sighthound. They use their sight to 

locate and chase prey rather than their 

scent. Therefore, genetically, whether 

the greyhound has raced or not, the 

movement of other animals can be 

exciting initially. 

However, Erika from Adobe Kennels, 

who helps transition greyhounds so they 

are ready to be rehomed into suburban 

life, advises that 30-40% of greyhounds 

can live with cats. So, how do they assess 

if a greyhound is cat-trainable? Firstly, 

they are introduced to a small dog, and 

if they interact well with that dog, then 

Wolfie, the laid-back cat who thinks 

she’s a dog, plays her part. During their 

interaction, the dog is observed closely 

for signs indicating an issue, including 

licking their lips or lunging at the cat. 

They are then observed with other, more 

flighty cats to help determine if they are 

cat-trainable. 

However, Erika confirms, “A greyhound 

is not going to go into your home cat 

friendly, but cat trainable.” Once home, a 

crate is helpful so the dog can be in its safe 

spot and observe your cat. Have the dog

muzzled in the house around the cat, and 

if the dog reacts, repeat the steps using the 

crate. Outside, the dog should be on lead, 

and interactions with your cat should be 

monitored for the first few weeks. After 

a time, these tools can be removed when 

fully settled into the house. This training 

relates to your dog living with your cat, 

but your cat only. Therefore, while out 

walking, muzzling is a brilliant tool. 

If your gorgeous greyhound is cattrainable, 

with the proper training, 

patience, and time, they will often 

become best friends and develop an 

inseparable bond with cats and small 

dogs.

to attend the junior Crusaders 

camp in October. 

Captain and No 8 Kai Tiltman, 

lock Freddy Cambridge, 

both from Lincoln High, and 

midfielder Brooklyn Dalgety 

(Rolleston College), will take part 

in the three-day camp starting 

October 7. 

The 53-man training group 

will then be whittled down to 

a squad of 35 to take on the 

Hurricanes under 18 side on 

October 11. 

It’s the trio’s first time 

attending the camp, following 

strong seasons for the combined 

side, despite the team’s poor 

results, finishing ninth in the 

Miles Toyota premiership. 

Tiltman captained the side, 

who narrowly avoided relegation 

after beating Timaru Boys’ High 

School in their final game. 

The Crusaders junior team 

will be coached by Johnny Leo’o, 

who returns to take charge of

Leo’o said the group was a

who have been running the Hororātā 

Mechanical Swap Meet since 2010, 

have joined forces with the Hororātā 

Community Trust to bring this event to the 

Hororātā Domain. 

The event is a paradise for automotive 

and mechanical enthusiasts, and it promises 

to be a bustling gathering with an estimated 

1,500 visitors and more than 100 vendors.

Community Trust advises, “We are 

committed to growing this event into one 

of New Zealand’s largest mechanical swap 

meets. It is a place where enthusiasts can 

come together to discuss their passions, 

discover rare parts, and declutter their 

garages. To keep the focus on mechanical 

items, we have a strict no bric-a-brac policy, 

and if you bring china and soft toys to this 

event, you will be told to go home.” 

The Hororātā Community Trust has 

organised this event as a fundraiser for 

several community groups, including 

Glentunnel Primary School, Hororātā 

Historical Society, and Hororātā Parish.

at the company’s Wilfield subdivision in West Melton,

A bedroom offers place of refuge 

For many people their bedroom is more 

than a place to sleep, providing somewhere 

to escape to relax with a book or watch the 

box. Children often play in their bedrooms. 

They may also be a study den away from 

distractions for students. 

Calculating the ideal size for each 

bedroom in your new home depends upon 

whether it will simply be a place to hang 

one’s clothes and sleep or have other uses as 

well. 

Visualising the size of each bedroom can 

be hard when viewing house plans. Visiting 

show homes can help though, be mindful 

of the size of furniture and beds on display. 

Compare each setting to what will go into 

your bedrooms. Determine the size of each 

room and measure your existing bedrooms, 

or pace out what you will require. You might 

even pop a tape measure into your pocket 

when doing the show home rounds, to help 

with this exercise. 

Budget will influence the number of 

bedrooms and size of each. If wanting 

a guest bedroom for the occasional 

visitor, consider a more compact space or 

incorporating this with an office space to 

avoid having an under-utilised room.

to building 

Being organised, aids a smooth build 

whether engaging a building company 

or overseeing the project yourself. 

Start by finding a building site. Its 

orientation to sun and prevailing winds 

should determine your house design so 

the sun’s free energy is capitalised on 

and you have sunny sheltered spots for 

outdoor living. 

Choosing your design and building 

company may go hand in hand, where 

the latter’s consultant works with you to 

determine the best plan for your section, 

lifestyle and family needs. 

Alternatively, you might employ an 

architect or architectural draughtsman. 

While it may cost a little more for house 

plans drawn up for building consent 

and maybe lodged by your professional, 

it allows you freedom to work with a 

smaller builder or oversee your own 

project. Ensure all tradespeople are 

licensed building practitioners (a 

building consent requirement). 

Before building starts, determine all 

building materials and fixtures (some 

will be required to be stated for building 

consent). Many housing companies take 

their clients through these decisions 

before commencing building. Changes 

made once building is underway 

are likely to incur extra charges and 

even budget overruns, especially if 

tradespeople return to the job. 

If working with a smaller builder, 

you may have more time to choose the 

kitchen design, kitchen appliances and 

paint colours. Working through these 

decisions early on however ensures time 

to weigh-up options rather than a rushed 

choice. 

Try making a list of the fixtures and 

fittings to be decided on, such as the 

type and colour of the exterior cladding, 

roof, aluminium joinery, front door 

and garage door. List the bathroom 

and toilet products required then visit 

plumbing suppliers to get ideas for 

vanities, bath, showers, taps, bath spout 

and the like. If having a walk-in shower, 

consider whether you want a glass door 

and the number of shower heads. Write 

down the brands and product numbers 

you like and obtain prices to allow 

differentiation between the options. 

Meeting your plumber on site is also a 

good idea so placement of taps and the 

like can be discussed. 

Most electricians do a walk-through 

with clients to determine where power 

points, lights and electronic fittings will 

be positioned. Think about how each 

room will be used and furniture might 

be placed, remembering it is more 

affordable to include these while the 

house is under construction than retrofit 

later. Mark your ideas on a copy of the 

plan ahead of time. 

Collect paint charts and purchase test 

pots of colours you like then paint large 

pieces of cardboard to get an idea of 

their effect. Visit showhomes too, asking 

about their colour schemes. 

Planning ahead will help take stress

given much thought since 2020 hit, then 

look no further – because we’ve rounded 

up some top trends to help you get the 

most out of your space. 

Work/life 

When working from home, it can be 

hard to separate the two: work - where 

you’re juggling emails, phone calls and 

your to-do list - and home - where you 

relax, unwind and spend time with your 

nearest and dearest. 

A simple way to help strike the right 

balance and help you switch off when 

you’ve clocked out is to ensure you have 

a dedicated area where you work that you 

can completely detach from at the end of 

the day. 

Ideally, this will be a room, where you 

can simply shut down your computer, 

close the door and forget about until 

tomorrow – but if you don’t have a 

separate space consider creating a setup 

that can be cleared away by the end of the 

day. Secretary desks are a great option for 

rooms with more than one function, as 

you can simply close them over and hide 

your computer and work papers out of 

sight. 

Make it yours 

Just because your home office is 

functional, doesn’t mean it can’t be 

stylish – your home office should be a 

welcoming, organised, and personal space 

that will help you get the very most out of 

your working day. 

A big bonus of working from home is 

being able to set up the space exactly as 

you like it – if this means minimalist and 

streamlined then great, but if you fancy 

something a little bolder and brighter 

then go for it. Choose art that inspires 

you, frame photographs of your loved 

ones, pop in some pot plants and invest in 

some comfy cushions to make the space 

your own. 

Another thing to consider when 

designing – or redesigning - your home 

office is lighting. Good lighting is essential 

when working away on a computer for 

hours – but, again, this doesn’t need to 

be boring. A classic desk lamp is always 

a smart buy but mix things up with 

standing lamps, Tiffany-style shades and 

even funky neon lights to add interest. 

Statement walls 

With many of us using Zoom, Teams 

and Skype to keep in the loop with our 

colleagues, statement walls are having a 

bit of a moment when it comes to home 

offices, because as well as adding some 

interest and sparkle to a space that can 

often end up a bit lacklustre, they can 

provide a great background for our video 

calls. 

Patterned wallpaper is a popular choice 

to bring walls bang up to date, but they’re 

not the only option – consider painting 

one wall a deep teal, ruby red or emerald 

green to add some drama, or look into 

wood panelling for an old-world feel. 

Back to nature 

Integrating nature and natural elements 

is a big trend in homes at the moment, 

and your home office doesn’t need to 

miss out. Strike a balance between 

your computer, phone and other office 

equipment by embracing natural 

materials, such as wood and stone, and 

introducing some leafy green plants to 

your workspace. 

Another easy way to jump onto the 

trend is by throwing back the curtains so 

lots of lovely natural sunlight can pour 

in – studies suggest that natural light can 

help boost productivity, so it’s ideal for a 

home office. 

If you want to take it a step further, opt 

for an earthy-toned colour scheme with 

plenty of browns, tans, and creams.
