Museum on the hunt for
trotting club memorabilia
• By Dave Di Somma
THE NEW Brighton Museum
is on the lookout for trotting
memorabilia – but there is a
catch.
It has to relate to the New
Brighton Trotting Club, which
operated at what became
QEII Park, from 1895 to 1963,
before relocating to Addington
Raceway.
“We want anything and
everything,” said museum
president Wayne Hawker.
“That includes trainers’
colours, footage of any races,
trophies, photos, cups, and
racebooks.
“We have a fair bit of stuff
already, but we are always keen
for more. They would on-loan
for the exhibition in October-
November.”
The museum, now into its
third decade, plans to hold
an exhibition just before New
Zealand Cup Week. It will also
coincide with the city’s Heritage
Week.
Recently, the museum held
a “50 years on” exhibition celebrating
the 1974 Christchurch
Commonwealth Games.
“We had 2500 through the
doors – it was a great success,”
Hawker said.
Trotting in New Brighton
goes back about 140 years.
At a meeting at the Sawyers
Arms Hotel, Papanui, in
February 1883, the stewards
“were empowered to select
a course for races anywhere
within the Avon Road District’’.
The stewards selected land
that skirted the swamps near to
New Brighton beach.
Tom Free, licensee of the
Bower Hotel, laid out a 1200m
course at the QEII Park
property.
There was then a mixed
trotting and racing programme,
with the first race on the site
held in 1886.
It was a start, but by all
accounts the conditions were
pretty rustic.
The land was then bought
by Henry Mace, a soft drinks
manufacturer, who built Brooklyn
Lodge where he founded a
stud plus training and racing
stables.
He sank several wells for
irrigation, upgraded the track
and built accommodation for
the public.
After leasing the new track
from Mace, the New Brighton
Trotting Club held its first
official race meeting on March
16, 1895.
The first race held at the new
venue was won by J Gallagher’s
Swinton by 300 yards in 6.01 for
two miles.
Henry Mace died in 1902,
with Robert Button, a rich
timber merchant at the time,
taking over the property.
Chlorine-free drinking water
returning after station upgrades
CHLORINE-FREE Water is
coming back to New Brighton.
The city council has upgraded
the 345 Keyes Rd drinking water
station to meet new government
regulations.
It is scheduled to reopen this
week.
The taps were closed in August
2023 to comply with updated
drinking water laws.
At the time, city council staff
warned they might not reopen
due to the costs and complications
of removing chlorine from
the water.
Coastal Ward councillor
Celeste Donovan pushed for the
decision to be reconsidered.
“I’m really happy that anyone
in New Brighton and from across
the city who wants chlorinefree
water can now fill up their
containers at these community
taps,” Donovan said.
Chlorine was introduced to all
water supply zones in Christchurch
and Banks Peninsula to
comply with the Water Services
Act 2021 and associated regulations.
The city council closed the
New Brighton filling station, and
another at Burnside Park, as they
did not comply with the new
CHLORINE FREE: Coastal Ward councillor Celeste Donovan
advocated for the drinking water station on Keyes Rd to be
reopened.
drinking water standards.
However, work to upgrade the
stations has been completed.
The water now goes through
a cartridge filter and UV
treatment on site, but remains
chlorine free.
Donovan said she was disappointed
when the community
taps were shut off without any
notice after they were deemed
unsafe.
She worked with city council
staff to find a way to get the
taps back up and running after
hearing from the community
how important chlorine-free
water is.
Donovan worked with Waimairi
Ward councillor Sam Mac-
Donald to get the New Brighton
and Burnside taps reopened
about the same time.
The community filling station
in Burnside Park reopened last
week.
People wanting to use the taps
need to bring clean containers,
and should be considerate of how
much water they take at a time.
Exhibition to celebrate
harness racing history
• From page 1
Button is best remembered
as the father of Bella Button, a
harness racing pioneer who was
taking part in trotting events
as far back as the 1890s. Two
horses called Bella Button have
since raced here, most recently
an eight-win trotter trained by
Mark Jones.
The club leased and then
bought the land off the Button
family. It evolved into a training
centre, with the track as fast as
any in the country.
A long list of champions,
including Wildwood Junior,
Reta Peter, Adelaide Direct,
Willie Lincoln, Agathos, Onyx,
Peter Bingen, Great Bingen,
Harold Logan and Josedale
Grattan, were trained on the
New Brighton track. Reta Peter,
a trotter, was a two-time New
Zealand Cup winner in 1920 and
1921.
Happy Voyage’s 2:04.2, which
stood as the NZ and Australian
mile record for a season, was
established on the track in 1923
while Harold Logan’s 2:36.6
victory in the Avon Handicap
over a mile-and-a-quarter (about
2000m) from 84yds (76m) in
1934 was a then-world record.
During World War 1, the army
used the grounds for training
PAST GLORIES: An exhibition is planned to showcase New
Brighton Trotting Club’s contribution to harness racing.
exercises, although racing
continued and prospered. That
changed during World War 2
when the grounds were given
over to the Defence Department
and racing moved to Addington.
The club returned to its home
patch in 1948 after the site
had undergone an extensive
makeover.
But the advent of night trotting
changed everything.
It was first introduced at Addington
Raceway on November
20, 1963, the same night Cardigan
Bay won the Allan Matson
Handicap in a new world record
(3:18.2).
By then the New Brighton
club had decided to sell the
site and move permanently to
Addington.
Its last meeting was held
on September 21, 1963, with
the club merging with the
Canterbury Park and the New
Metropolitan Trotting Clubs in
1998.
The course was sold to the city
council for $75,000.
A harness racing fan for
decades, Hawker wants the
museum’s exhibition to showcase
the New Brighton Trotting
Club’s significant contribution to
harness racing in Canterbury.
In the last 40 years, he’s hardly
missed a New Zealand Cup.
And his favourite? Borana’s
1985 win at odds of 70-to-one.
“I had $5 over $10 on it,”
Hawker said. “And I also had the
horse in the sweepstake at work!”
Volunteers pay for
gift shop makeover
THE MUCH LOVED – but
lately well worn – Christchurch
Hospital Volunteers Gift Shop
has had a make-over.
It has been given a completely
new fit-out, paid for by the volunteers.
The shop was reopened
in style last Thursday by senior
operations manager George
Schwass, who cut a ribbon to
mark the opening.
Whether you need to post a
parcel, get a lolly hit, pick up a
magazine or buy a gift to cheer
up a patient, the shop is always
there, said retail co-ordinator
shop manager Ann Hill.
“Thanks to the unwavering
dedication of our wonderful
volunteers, the gift shop has
donated close to $2.2 million
in patient and visitor comfort
items, to support staff education
and at times purchase equipment.”
As the main source of funding
for the hospital volunteers’
committee, the shop enables
the committee to approve many
grants. The renovation will ensure
the shop continues to build
on this success and provide a
great service to everyone who
walks through its doors, Hill
said.
The volunteers who work in
the shop bring their skills and
kindness every day.
“In doing so they provide
a much-needed service while
raising money that contributes
to many projects and patient
comfort items within the
hospital. One hundred per cent
of profits go back to the hospital
community. It’s so worthy of
your support,” she said.
The volunteers also run a
website service where relatives
and friends can purchase a gift
for a loved one in hospital and a
volunteer will deliver it.
recipe.
your leftovers
It’s time to get smart
with your leftovers and
start getting creative in
the kitchen, report the
team at Love Food Hate
Waste NZ
EMBRACING LESS waste and
more taste, Love Food Hate
Waste NZ has launched its new
campaign "Leftover Legends.
Celebrating creative and practical
ways to make the most of our
leftover meals, saving time,
money and food.
Check out Love Food Hate
Waste’s quick top tips to help you
become a leftover legend.
Remember the 2-2-2 rule
To ensure your leftovers are safe,
follow the 2-2-2 rule: cool them,
cover them and refrigerate within
two hours of cooking.
Eat within two days, either
cold or reheated until piping hot.
This simple practice can prevent
foodborne illnesses and keep your
meals delicious.
If in doubt, freeze. If you don’t
think you are going to eat your
leftovers within two days, freeze
them for up to two months.
Label everything
Avoid the dreaded UFOs
(unidentified frozen objects) in
your freezer by labelling your
leftovers with the dish name and
date. This small step helps you
keep track of what you have and
when to eat it.
Prioritise ‘eat me first’
items
Designate a spot in your fridge
for items that need to be eaten
soon. Use an "eat me first" sticker
or have a designated shelf in the
fridge for free-for-all items. This
will also stop hungry teenagers
snacking on the food you plan to
use for dinner.
Mix and match meals
Turn leftover nights into a
culinary adventure. Your meal
may end up being a random
assortment of food, but you’ll get
a night off cooking!
Make sure you have staples
such as wraps, eggs or bread to
bulk out the meal if necessary.
Be smart about servings
When serving family-style, let
everyone choose their portions.
Rather than scraping leftovers
from people’s plate into the bin,
you can store what’s left in the
serving dish for another day.
Upskill your cooking
Learn a few versatile recipes,
like frittatas, soups, or pies, to
transform your leftovers into a
fresh new dish. This helps keep
your meals interesting and saves
you from eating the same meal
twice.
Leftovers anytime
Who says leftovers are just for
lunch? Enjoy them for breakfast
or as a snack. The important
thing is that they get eaten, not
wasted. Embracing these tips
can help reduce food waste, save
money and make mealtimes
more exciting.
Get creative with small
portions
Leftover bits and pieces can be
the start of something new. Make
a stir fry by adding vegetables or
beans, use bread as a pizza base
and top with small amounts of
leftovers and top with cheese,
Easy Wontons
Ingredients
250g-300g leftovers – try curry,
barbecue meat and sauce, tofu
and gravy. Roasted veges.
1 tablespoon fresh herbs, finely
chopped
1 x 24 pack wonton, dumpling,
or gyoza wrappers
¼ cup water
Method
• Either finely chop or blend
your leftovers. The finer you
chop them, the easier it is to
create your wontons.
• Take a wonton wrapper
and place on the bench. Pop
a spoonful of mixture in the
centre.
• Using your finger dab around
the edges and as close to the
filling as you can with a little
water.
• Bring together into a semicircle
and seal and squeeze the edges.
• Continue until you’ve used up
the filling and wontons.
• Drop into a bubbling broth for
soup; top with freshly chopped
herbs. Steam, pan or air fry. Or
drop into a freezer bag and store.
• Follow along on
Facebook and Instagram
hacks and get inspired.
