THE FIRST CAR driven in
Sumner is up for sale and a motor
enthusiast is revving up efforts to
put it on display.
The 1899 Benz Velo has an
estimated value of $500,000.
Todd Crooks from TNT Cars
and Classics said the car’s value
was due to it being a fully-restored
heritage vehicle. He also based the
estimated price on previous Benz
Velo sales in Europe.
John Monck, who Moncks Bay
is named after, owned the car for
more than 40 years after buying
it in 1901. He was the first to buy
farmland in the bay in 1869.
Sumner resident Jens Christensen
spoke at the Waihoro
Spreydon-Cashmere-Heathcote
Community Board on August 15
asking for help displaying it.
“It’s a historic vehicle in my view.
It should be in public ownership,”
he told board members.
Christensen declined to speak to
Bay Harbour News about his plans.
The car’s owner, vintage car
collector Gavin Bain, died in
February. His family now want to
sell the Benz.
Since the community board
meeting, Christensen and city
council staff have been looking at
options for receiving the heritage
car into public ownership on
behalf of the Bain family.
If a publicly-owned display
location is secured, Christensen
will then
fundraise for to
buy the car.
City council
acting head of
community
support and
partnerships
Matthew Pratt
said they will
look into future
Jens
Christensen
costs for maintenance, storage and
insurance.
Christensen’s interest in the
car was sparked after buying the
former home of John Monck.
He has suggested Canterbury
Museum as a display location. The
museum is
undergoing renovations
and is not expected to reopen
until late-2028.
The Velo was created in 1894 by
Carl Benz, a German automotive
engineer considered to be the
‘father of the automobile industry’.
The 1899 model has a 1 litre,
3-horsepower engine with a top
speed of 19km/h.
After arriving in the South
Island in 1900, the Benz went
through several owners including
the wealthy Goodwin family from
Glenroy near Hororata.
In 1946, Hawkes Bay aviator
Piet van Asch bought the car, and
it stayed with his family until Bain
bought it in 2021 and returned it
to Christchurch.
NZ Post
POSTAL SERVICES will return
to the heritage post office building
in Akaroa following last month’s
sudden closure of the iSite
business, which included the area’s
NZ Post retail services.
Residents were cut off from
some in-person retail services
while a new site was secured with
NZ Post.
The service will now be run
from the city council service centre
in the old post office building on
Rue Lavaud.
From next Tuesday, over the
counter postal services will be
available Monday to Friday, 10am
to 2pm. Post box services will be
provided Monday to Saturday.
City council head of citizen and
customer services, Sarah Numan
said the new location will have the
same postal services as the iSite
building.
Banks Peninsula councillor
Tyrone Fields said the local
community was extremely
concerned at the prospect of
losing postal services altogether
and it was a relief to have found a
sustainable solution.
Serviceman J
The Untold Story of an NZSAS Soldier
by Jamie Pennell
A gripping memoir by a former NZSAS commander on serving in Afghanistan
over four deployments and operating at the edge of his limits
In 2011, following the Taliban siege on Kabul’s Intercontinental Hotel, an SAS
soldier identified only as Serviceman J was awarded New Zealand’s second
highest military honour by showing outstanding gallantry in the
face of danger. After eighteen years in the New Zealand SAS,
ex-commander Jamie Pennell is now ready to tell his story.
Having survived the famously tough SAS selection course
and excelled during its brutal training, Jamie was sent on
four deployments to Afghanistan and played a critical role
in New Zealand’s operations. From patrols across desert
territories run by warlords to hostile fire and near-death
combat, Serviceman J is a heart-stopping account of life inside
one of the world’s most elite military forces.
A Town Called Treachery
by Mitch Jennings
A deadbeat dad. A curious boy. A journo drowning in the past ... and a town full of
secrets. Can the truth ever be found in a town called Treachery?
‘One of a kind ... A coming-of-age story, a crime investigation and a gripping dark
drama brought to life with affection, humour and sharp insight’ Malcolm Knox
A brutal murder in a town called Treachery? It’s a story most journos would kill for,
but for Stuart Dryden, it’s a major inconvenience. He didn’t take the gig at the local
rag for its bustling crime beat.
He’d sacrifice a career-making story for happy hour at the pub, but not even he
can let a grisly murder through to the keeper. Especially when he keeps getting
scooped by a persistent kid with a disposable Kodak.Life’s tough for eleven-yearold
Matty Finnerty. His mother’s gone, his father’s gone most of the time and, as
hard as he tries, he just can’t get the kids at school to like him.
When his favourite teacher Wendy Millburn turns up dead at the beach, it puts his
dad Robbie in the crosshairs of a town that never liked him anyway. Worse than
the bricks through the window, the dead rabbits on the lawn and the fish heads in
the mailbox is the fact no one seems to be looking for Wendy’s killer. Matty starts
to wonder whether Robbie knew her better than he’s let on. He needs a hero,
and Dryden will have to do - that is, if he can just stay sober for a night or two. He
might even cast off the ghosts of his own past.
As they stumble their way to answers, can they find the truth about Wendy - and
what they’re really made of?
Going into Port Hills red zone
a safety risk, rangers warn
INCREASING use of red-zoned
land in the Port Hills by the
public has city council rangers
fearing the worst.
Multiple areas across the Port
Hills are red-zoned due to the
risk of death and injury to the
public.
However, city
council rangers
are seeing
increasing
unpermitted
use of restricted
areas by
residents,
including young
people and
community groups.
The council has fenced off
Dave Little
areas and placed warning signs
regarding the danger, but fences
and signs are typically stolen or
damaged within days.
Red zone manager Dave Little
said the rock wall in Sumner is
one example of an area being
accessed, despite the risk to the
public.
“We have noticed people
riding horses, and kids have
been building bike tracks and
jumps in recent weeks. We
understand the appeal of these
spaces, but it is just not safe,
and no-one should be in there
without training or approval.
“Other areas in the Port Hills
red zone are being accessed by
the community for planting
but these areas are restricted for
a reason – they are dangerous.”
The public is at risk of death or
injury from boulders dislodging
due to changing weather
conditions or land movement in
a quake.
An example of this risk
DANGEROUS: The city
council is reminding
people to stay out of redzoned
land in the Port Hills
for their own safety, after
noticing an increase in use.
PHOTO: NEWSLINE
happened in March, when
a boulder came loose and
smashed through several
barriers on Mulgans Track in
Clifton.
Little said city council
staff want to see increased
community awareness of the
risk of death and injury in the
Port Hills red zone.
“Our rangers are out working
in the community, and they
certainly don’t want to see
people hurt in these spaces. We
need the community to stay out
of Port Hills red-zoned land for
everyone’s sake and peace of
mind.”
Over the next two years,
the city council will reassess
the risks to establish whether
community plantings can be
held in appropriate areas, but
this process is site specific and
will take time.
NZ Post’s
return a
‘win-win’
situation
• From page 1
“Retaining key services is
so important for a town like
Akaroa. We want it to be an
attractive place for people to live,
work and raise their families so
having amenities like NZ Post
is an important component of
that,” Fields said.
“I’m thrilled we’ve been able
to work with NZ Post on what
we anticipate will be a long-term
arrangement; the advocacy
from Nigel Harrison and Asif
Hussain, Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū
Banks Peninsula Community
Board members, has been key to
making this happen.
“This is a win-win for the local
community, for this beautiful
heritage building and for visiting
tourists, who we know the town
is increasingly dependent on.
“It’s also entirely fitting that
postal services will once again
return to the historic post office.”
The heritage post office
building was built during World
War 1 on the site of the first
Akaroa Post Office, which was
built in 1856.
Paws & Peace - Fear Free Veterinary Care at Kōwhai Vet
When it comes to the well-being of our
cherished furry friends, we often focus
on their physical health, ensuring they receive
the best preventative healthcare, vaccinations,
or treatment when they are sick or injured.
But how often do we consider the emotional
wellbeing of our pets during those veterinary
visits?
At Kōwhai Vet, we understand the emotional
impact of a visit to the vet and have made it
our mission to provide fear-free patient care,
ensuring the utmost comfort and relaxation for
both pets and their owners.
Understanding FAS: Fear, Anxiety
and Stress
A trip to the vet can be a daunting experience
for animals and their owners alike, often
leading to high levels of fear, anxiety, and
stress, collectively referred to as ‘FAS.’
When animals are fearful, they face limited
responses to a scary situation – fight, flight,
freeze, or fidget. Recognising and addressing
these emotional responses is at the core of our
approach to care.
Creating a Stress-Free Environment
At Kōwhai Vet, our primary goal is to keep FAS
levels as low as possible during every visit
to our clinic, ensuring a calm and soothing
atmosphere for both pets and owners.
Here are some of the ways we try to
achieve this:
Education: We provide pet owners with
valuable guidance on preparing their pets for
a trip to the vet, helping to kickstart the visit
on a positive note.
Calming Scents and Pet Pheromones:
Our clinic is infused with calming scents
and pet pheromones, creating a serene
atmosphere to ease pets’ anxiety upon arrival.
Long Appointments: We allocate ample
time for appointments, giving your pet the
opportunity to adjust to the new environment
gradually. Throughout the visit, we closely
monitor signs of FAS and take measures to
reduce stress whenever possible.
Pre-Visit Calming Medications: For highly
anxious pets, we offer pre-visit calming
medications to reduce anxiety levels and
ensure a more comfortable visit.
Positive Reinforcement: We offer a variety of
treat options to create a positive experience
during the visit, helping to alleviate your pet’s
anxiety and build trust.
Gentle Handling: Our clinic employs minimal
restraint techniques to handle pets during
procedures, ensuring their comfort and
security throughout.
In cases where a procedure might cause
of FAS, we consider the use of additional pain
relief or calming medications to maintain your
pet’s relaxation.
Dedication to Fear-Free Care
At Kōwhai Vet, many of our staff members
have already achieved, or are actively working
towards their Fear-Free Certification. This
demonstrates our unwavering commitment to
providing the highest standard of care for your
pets.
Our dedication to fear-free patient care is not
just a commitment; it’s our promise. We aim to
make every visit to our clinic as low-stress and
relaxing as possible, ensuring both you and
your beloved pets have a positive experience.
Contact us today to experience the difference
that compassionate, fear-free care can make in
your pet’s life.
Busiest routes
for commutes
shown in data
What are the city’s
five busiest roads and
intersections? Dylan
Smits reports
TRAFFIC monitoring data from
the city council over the past three
years has revealed the city’s busiest
intersections and major roads.
The data is recorded during
peak commuting hours only
on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and
Thursdays to ensure a more
consistent and accurate count.
Each intersection and major
road has its traffic volume recorded
at varying frequency, from every
year to every three years, depending
on its significance.
The five roads with the
highest average vehicles a
weekday are:
• Moorhouse Ave 52,646
• Brougham St 46,212
• Bealey Ave 42,221
• Main South Rd 38,531
• Blenheim Rd 35,899
Two of the four avenues and
Main South Rd, take three of
the top spots for the busiest
routes.
Brougham St, a critical road
for Christchurch, is a state
highway under New Zealand
Transport Agency jurisdiction.
Funding of $20 million for
upgrades to Brougham St was
cut in May, prompting criticism
of the Government’s commitment
to improving the city’s
transport infrastructure.
The upgrade would have
included lanes for carpooling,
buses and motorcycles, intersection
improvements, and a
shared pedestrian-cycle path.
The five intersections with
the highest average vehicles a
weekday are:
• Deans Ave, Riccarton Ave,
Riccarton Rd 24,773
• Blenheim Rd, Curletts Rd
24,745
• Moorhouse Ave, Durham St
South 23,447
• Moorhouse Ave, Waltham
Rd, Barbadoes St 23,360
• Brougham St, Selwyn St
22,232
Moorhouse Ave, left, is the busiest road with an average of 52,646 vehicles driving on the road a
weekday. Brougham St is the second busiest road with an average of 46,212 vehicles travelling
along it every weekday.
The Deans Ave, Riccarton Ave, Riccarton Rd intersection, left, is the busiest with an average
of 24,773 vehicles driving through it each weekday. It beats the Blenheim Rd, Curletts Rd
intersection by a small margin which averages 24,745 vehicles.
WIDESPREAD: Lucy Callaghan is crocheting daffodils again this year. Left – Canterbury’s
National MPs Hamish Campbell, Nicola Grigg, Vanessa Weenink and Matt Doocey wearing
Lucy’s daffodils in Parliament.
Lucy crocheting daffodils for cancer
LUCY CALLAGHAN will
be out selling her crocheted
daffodils again for Daffodil Day
tomorrow.
The 15-year-old lost her dad
Mark to cancer just over a year
ago, and had always supported
and volunteered for Daffodil Day
along with her parents and sister
Molly.
Lucy began selling her daffodils
to raise money for Southern
Cancer Society. She will be selling
her daffodils at New World
St Martins and online.
She has received widespread
attention for her efforts, with demand
growing after crocheting
500 daffodils last year.
Lucy’s daffodils have also
reached Parliament.
MP for Banks Peninsula
Vanessa Weenink ordered 20
daffodils to sell to her colleagues,
and ended up ordering another
100 because of its popularity.
Lucy has a team backing her to
help with the demand.
Her grandmother is crocheting
with her, and her grandfather
built a stall.
Businesses have also stepped in
to give her a helping hand.
Deb Moore from Outlaw Yarn
wool shop in Sydenham wanted
to donate some yarn to Lucy,
but didn’t have it in the right
colour.
Moore requested the help of
Wild Earth Yarns, owned by
Jacqui and Graham McLaughlin,
who donated 5kg of their pure
white Merino for Moore to dye
the correct yellow.
Lucy was incredibly grateful
for the support.
“It’s really good to have some
support and Deb’s been great.
The darker colour just didn’t
look right when it was crocheted,
but the new colour is perfect.”
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
Sumner Rd a tricky route to create
Getting from the port to
the plains was critical for
early settlers. In part one of
a two-part series, J.C Betts
details the creation of the
Sumner Rd, 1849-1867
THE MOST pressing problem
for Waitaha Canterbury’s first
settlers was access from the
port to the plains and the site of
Ōtautahi Christchurch.
In July 1849, Captain Thomas
first viewed a route via a 600ft
pass suggested by Master Evans,
of the survey ship, Her Majesty’s
Paddle Steamer, HMPSAcheron.
Thomas believed a 4-mile road
over Tapuaeharuru Evans Pass
(with a tunnel through the
summit) to Matuku Takotako
Sumner and the remaining
7 miles to the site of the city
could be built in time for the
immigrants’ arrival.
Labourers were brought from
Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington
– about half of them were
Māori. At first, tangata whenua
appear to have been dubious
about joining the road gangs.
However, after a few weeks’ work
Thomas wrote: “The natives
residing here who have hitherto
held back are now so well pleased
with the treatment of the working
natives that they are now
joining us in considerable numbers.”
(Colin Amodeo, Tracking
Captain Thomas, Caxton Press,
2017, p.175.)
In November, one gang
downed tools, apparently offended
by their supervisor’s swearing
– the man, Joseph Compton,
left his job. Another road gang
worked on forming the uphill
road east from Ōhinehou Lyttelton’s
Oxford St towards Officers
Point, a spur of very hard rock.
By blasting, they succeeded
in forming the road as far as
On the Sumner Road, Canterbury, New Zealand by Sir
William Fox January 1851. Te Ūaka Lyttelton Museum ref
Sticking Point, known today
as Windy Point, where a plane
table affords interpretation of the
harbour’s features. No 2 Road
Party began at the top of the
pass, flattening the summit and
starting on the downhill sections
on both sides.
The day before the settlers’
arrival, Chief Agent JR Godley
dealt with a dispute – the
European workers objected to
Māori receiving the same wage
as themselves, sixpence an hour.
Godley fired the dissidents and
hired more Māori. The European
men returned to work the next
day. Godley described the Māori
at work, stating “they struck,
shovelled &c., altogether, keeping
time to a song . . . most civil,
good-natured fellows, laughing
immoderately at our questions
and chattering broken English
very fast in reply”. (Amodeo,
ibid. p.193.)
By late 1850, it was obvious
that the road would not be completed
in time.
Charlotte Godley wrote: “The
great road is still very unfinished;
several shoulders of rock
that come in the way, and have to
be blasted, stop it up completely,
and in some places along the line
even the path is quite a climb,
with a rope to pull yourself up
by”. (Charlotte Godley, Letters
from Early New Zealand, Whitcombe
& Tombs, 1951, p.139.)
When the immigrants arrived
in December 1850, the Bridle
Path to Ōpāwaho Heathcote was
the only land route to the plains.
The Canterbury Association was
wound up in 1853 and the new
Provincial Council under Superintendent
J.E FitzGerald pressed
on with the Sumner Rd.
Provincial engineer Edward
Dobson chose a radically
different (but much cheaper)
route. The road on the harbour
side skirted the coast to Gollans
Bay at a level lower than the
problematic bluffs, then rose to
the top of the pass in a series of
tight zig-zags. The original plan
to build a tunnel through the
summit never happened due to
lack of funds.
On the Sumner side, Dobson
chose a different route on the
other side of the valley “modifying
his gradient according to
the character of the hill-side”, according
to C.C Bowen, Lyttelton
Times, September 8, 1902.
This resulted in a very steep
section and a hairpin bend
near the summit. The original,
partly-formed line is now the
Captain Thomas Track.
FitzGerald was so determined
to see the road finished before he
left for England, that in August
1857 he “insisted on risking his
own life and that of his friends
by driving a tandem over the
half finished zig-zag . . . with the
assistance of volunteer grooms
hanging on to the horses’ heads
and a stalwart crowd hanging on
to the dog cart behind”. (Lyttelton
Times, September 8, 1902.)
FitzGerald’s vehicle had two
six-foot high red wheels and was
known as the “irculating Medium”.
Pedestrians accompanied
the travellers and they were
given a rousing welcome and ceremonial
dinner in Lyttelton.
When FitzGerald returned
to New Zealand in 1861 he
found that Superintendent W.S
Moorhouse had started work
on a railway line and tunnel
to Lyttelton via Ōpāwaho
Heathcote. FitzGerald so
strongly disapproved that,
despite having been the first
editor of the Lyttelton Times, he
started a second newspaper, The
Press, in order to criticise the
railway.
The first Sumner Rd at least
provided a daily carriage and
mail service.
Lady Barker made the
Sticking Point, Lyttelton
Harbour, circa 1868,
Christchurch, by Daniel
Mundy. Te Papa (O.009606)
journey in 1865. “We started
from Lyttelton and almost
immediately began to ascend
the zig-zag. It was a tremendous
pull for the poor horses, who
however never flinched; at the
steepest pinch the gentlemen
were requested to get out and
walk, which they did, and at
length we reached the top . . .
the driver looked to the harness
of his horses, put on a very
powerful double break, and we
began the descent, which, I must
say, I thought we took much too
quickly, especially as at every
turn of the road some anecdote
was forthcoming of an upset or
accident.” (Lady Barker, Station
Life in New Zealand, Virago
1984, pp 19-20.)
With the completion of the
Moorhouse Rail Tunnel in 1867,
improving the route was no
longer a priority, but after 70
years, and the advent of motor
transport, attention was again
given to the Sumner Rd.
Foundation helping locals achieve their goals
THE SUMNER Ferrymead
Foundation has a long, proud
history.
We go back 30 years and in
that time have helped many
individuals, families, clubs and
groups. Indeed, as reported
on these pages, we recently
celebrated our thirtieth birthday
with a 30 at 30 exercise – that is,
we made special grants to some
local groups totalling $30,000.
Over the last year or so,
trustees of the SFF have been
considering our operation and
the way that we work. We have
about $270,000 of capital and are
keen to use this and other funds
we raise for maximum effect.
About four years ago,we introduced
academic scholarships
which gave grants to tertiary
students who have completed at
least one year of successful study.
These grants are for variable
amounts but are generally for
several thousand dollars.
As you could imagine, word is
getting out that these grants are
available and applications are,
therefore, growing.
Continuing this would soon
deplete our funds and as much
as we can, we match each grant
with a sponsor, effectively
making the scholarships selffunding.
This model of matching grants
with sponsors has worked
extremely well – we have a
good number of individuals
and businesses who have been
extremely generous and helped
many people. It is a model we
will continue and try to extend
into other areas.
For example, we may continue
with the 30 at 30 granting where
we gave four grants of $5000
and one of $10,000 to clubs and
groups in several different fields
(environmental, education,
sport, art and culture).
As often happens, we had
more applications than funds
and some worthy groups had to
miss out.
If you would like to sponsor
grants in a particular field like
art, sports, environmental
initiatives, education or any
other field within our district,
we would love to hear from you.
Trustees of the SFF have
decided that we will no longer
grant to individuals – only clubs,
groups and organisations will
receive funds.
The large number of 30 at
30 applications shows there is
a great need for locals to help
locals. We will continue to use
our own funds to help local
groups, but we will, where we
can, continue to match grants to
sponsors.
cuppa. Double garaging and toasty heating
Sunday League marks 50 years
of community and competition
• By Sam Coughlan
IT WAS November 26, 1973, and
a group of football enthusiasts
were gathered at the Albion Hotel
on Colombo St – the watering
hole for Christchurch Star staff.
But it wasn’t an after-work
catch-up they were there for –
they were discussing starting a
Sunday soccer competition.
David Bolam-Smith, a photolithographer
and member of
the Christchurch Star team, was
the driving force, having had the
idea to start a Sunday league in
Christchurch after returning from
a working holiday in England,
where Sunday football is wildly
popular.
The Star’s team played weekly
friendly matches, mostly against
companies whose players worked
on Saturdays, but he wanted
something with more structure.
“I thought ‘why go to all
this effort and not have a
competition?’,” Bolam-Smith, who
lives in Mt Pleasant, said.
“So I put the word out to all
the clubs, company teams that
we were playing against – why
don’t we get together and form a
league?”
Representatives from the Star,
Whitcoulls, the Christchurch
Transport Board, the Fire
Brigade, North Beach United,
Belview ‘Bombers’ and Camp
Gitch ‘Grizzlies’ met to plan the
competition, with Telegraph
joining later.
Retired Star sports editor Nick
Tolerton was at the meeting,
and played for the Star team at
the time, and he remembered “a
boozy night’’.
“It probably wasn’t the best idea
having the inaugural meeting
in a bar, but we got sense out of
everyone in the end.”
Bolam-Smith was elected
chairman and Tolerton secretary,
where he kept minutes from that
first meeting.
The league began in 1974
with eight teams competing. All
matches were played at Nunweek
Park every Sunday.
They’d all get together for the
after-match at the Harewood
Hall, where there was a social
atmosphere, despite the
competitiveness on the pitch.
“It was a very social league
when it started,” Bolam-Smith
said.
“I can remember the colour
of all the different uniforms
and tracksuits and the kids, the
parents, wives and children always
came to the game.
CHAMPIONS: Whitcoulls won the first Bolam Cup in 1974,
beating Christchurch Star 3-2 after extra time at Denton Oval.
GETTING CLEAR: Canterbury Fiji Navua defender Laitia Tuilau clears the ball under pressure
from Joe’s Bower 11 winger Alex Trowbridge during the 50th Bolam Cup final at English
Park on Sunday. The match was won 2-1 by Joe’s Bower 11. PHOTO: SAM COUGHLAN
WELL DONE: Bolam-Smith presents New Brighton Rovers
captain John McManus with the Bolam Cup at QEII
Stadium in 2004.
“It was just full of kids and
people and it was just a real good,
social get together. Competitive
on the field obviously, but
everyone nice and friendly off it.”
Whitcoulls won the first
Bolam Cup – contested between
the top four teams at the end
of the season, and named after
the league’s founder – beating
Christchurch Star 3-2 in the final
after extra time.
Fifty years on, the Sunday
League is still going strong,
now with four divisions and 28
teams. At its pre-Covid peak,
the league had five divisions and
about 40 teams competing.
The Bolam Cup, now a
knockout competition played
separately to the league, was
won by Joe’s Bower 11 on
Sunday, beating Canterbury Fiji
Navua 2-1 in the final at English
Park.
Bolam-Smith isn’t involved
with the league any longer, save
for attending the final to present
the winning team’s medals and
the Bolam Cup trophy.
Current Canterbury Sunday
Soccer League administrator
Murray Ralfs, who has been in
the role since 2010, said the 50th
anniversary of the league was
special.
“When I think back
50 years, some of us
guys from the Star
and different clubs got
together in the back
bar of the Albion, I
never, ever envisaged 50
years later, there’ll be a
football cup final.”
– David Bolam-Smith
“It is a momentous occasion
for us. It’s been a bit slow going
in the last two or three years
because our team numbers have
been dwindling, but this year’s
been a better one,” he said.
“What we’re planning on
doing is having an event, it’s
quite likely to be a dinner
somewhere. We’ll invite life
members and our existing clubs,
but also older members who’ve
been in the league as well. ”
Ralfs said the league was
different now to what it was in
the past when company teams
and pub sides competed – like
Avonhead Tavern, who have
won the cup seven times.
HISTORY: David Bolam-Smith
with the Bolam Cup ahead of
the final at English Park.
“We still get a little bit of that,
not much. Now there’s a lot
more ethnic teams.
“Quite a few Fijian sides, from
various parts of Fiji, we’ve got a
few (expats) from around Nepal
– Kathmandu and a little place
called Lhotshampa, which I had
never heard of, and now I have.
“These are ethnic people that
are here in New Zealand, they
have their own groups of people,
and they all love football, so
there’s quite a few of them.”
Bolam-Smith summed it up
well, almost in disbelief at how
much the little competition had
grown.
“When I think back 50 years,
some of us guys from the Star
and different clubs got together
in the back bar of the Albion, I
never, ever envisaged 50 years
later, there’ll be a football cup
final,” he said.
“It’s one of the memorable
occasions in my life. It’s
something I’ve dreamed up
and it not only grew, but like
small acorns grow into big
trees, this is certainly a case of
that little idea maturing into a
meaningful sporting event.
“It gives me satisfaction that
I’ve given so many young people
an opportunity to exercise and
play the sport that they love.”
AWARDS: The Bolam Cup, Christchurch Sunday Soccer
League trophy, and the player of the match award for the
best player in the final.
