PM urges councils
to rein in spending
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
North Canterbury council leaders
say they are already ‘‘reining in the
fantasies’’.
Christopher Luxon called on
councils to ‘‘rein in the fantasies’’,
manage spending, and focus on
delivering core services in his
opening address at last week’s
Local Government New Zealand
Conference.
‘‘Go line by line, stop the wasteful
spending, remove the bureaucracy,
focus on better customer service,
and end the projects that aren’t
delivering value for money.’’
While some mayors and
councillors around the country
were left feeling bruised by the
Prime Minister’sspeech, North
Canterbury’s councils say it is
regulations which drive up rates.
Local Government Minister
Simeon Brown also announced
changes for local government at the
conference, including limiting
rates increases for projects other
than ‘‘picking up rubbish, fixing
water infrastructure and filling in
potholes’’.
He will look at measures like
revenuecapping to rein in
‘‘wasteful spending’’, and ways to
make elected members more
accessible and more accountable
to voters.
Kaikōura Mayor Craig Mackle
and Hurunui District Council chief
executive Hamish Dobbie said
much of the cost borne by
ratepayers was in meeting
unfunded mandates passed down
by central Government, including
regulations.
‘‘The biggest problem for us in
producing infrastructure is the
rules imposed by central
Government,’’ Mr Dobbie said.
‘‘The Government needs to take
some responsibility, rather than
just leaving it up to local
government.’’
Mr Mackle said his council has
focused on core infrastructure,
such as roading, footpaths and
three waters, despite ahigher than
usual rates rise this year of 14.75
percent.
‘‘The Prime Minister certainly
had some clear points to make in a
short period of time at the
conference.
‘‘We agree with the comments
around focusing on the basics and
ensuring efficient and effective
delivery, and ultimately delivering
consistent ongoing value to our
communities.
‘‘We have made great progress on
these over the last few years
despite having to increase our
local share of funding to make sure
we get the job done.’’
Mr Mackle would also like to see
rising audit costs and insurance
Kaiapoi canine welcome
premiums addressed.
Audit New Zealand’s auditing of
Kaikōura’s annual plans cost close
to 2% of the council’s rates
revenue.
Hurunui Mayor Marie Black said
the Prime Minister’s opening
address ‘‘made many sit up and
think’’.
‘‘But, of course, putting this in
the context of Hurunui District
Council, Ihave reflected on our
recent Long Term Plan, with our
focus on the basics of roading,
water and infrastructure that
supports our community to be
vibrant and welcoming.
‘‘We have not had a‘laundry list
of options’ that sit outside this
brief.’’
She said Hurunui has a‘‘back to
basics’’ focus, which also
recognises the value of libraries,
swimming pools and green spaces,
which play an important role
‘‘within our place of belonging’’.
By SHELLEY TOPP
You might find afriendly
bearded collie/huntaway cross,
behind the counter when you
shop at Paper Plus Kaiapoi.
Molly belongs to the shop’s
owner ,Jared Raines, and
sometimes accompanies him to
work.
She is amember of the Dogs
of Kaiapoi Wall of Fame which
features 64 photos of canine
cuties who have visited the
shop with their owners.
Jared says the initiative
began when his sister Keely
Raines, who used to work at
the shop, started bringing her
two dogs to work with her to
ease their separation anxiety.
‘‘We got so many positive
comments from customers and
staff about the dogs being in the
shop,’’ Jared said. The positive
feedback intensified when
Jared started bringing his
family’s new puppy, which
could not be left home alone
either, into work also.
Customers began asking staff
if the shop was dogfriendly
and Jared began to think it
would be agood initiative to
introduce in the shop.
While travelling overseas he
had seen many dogfriendly
shops where canines were
welcome, alongside their
owners, and he thought itwas a
great initiative with many
benefits.
‘‘It was so cool. So we started
welcoming people with their
dogs into our shop too.’’
Soon after that the staff
began photographing the dogs
coming into the shop and the
Dogs of Kaiapoi Wall of Fame
was born. It is now afeature in
the shop and is enthusiastically
supported by visitors.
Keely no longer works at
Paper Plus Kaiapoi, in the
restored former Bank of New
Zealand building on the corner
of Williams Street and Charles
Street. But her partner, Sam
Roberts, who runs the printing
side of the business, sometimes
still takes their two Brussels
griffon dogs, Rocker and
Booster, to work with him,
although they are more likely
to be found at the back of the
shop with Sam.
Like Molly they have become
popular members of the Paper
Plus team. working there.
Eleven objections to new board
ByDAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
The fate of aproposedcommunity board
in North Canterbury will be decided by
the Local Government Commission.
Eleven objections were received on
the Hurunui District Council’s decision
to create acommunity board for its
south ward, which includes Amberley, at
next year’s local government election.
Councillors who supportedsaid it was
‘‘moredemocratic’’ and would better
represent the south ward's growing
population.
The AmberleyDistrict Residents’
Association is among the eleven
objectors.
Association chairperson Roy Myers
says there was ‘‘no evidence’’ to support
the change.
‘‘I can’t see any advantage whatsoever
with an elected community board of five
members who are paid by atargeted rate
of $20,’’ Mr Myers said.
‘‘I think it is going to reduce
representation.’’
He says under existing structure,
committee members were accountable
to the group they represented, but he
questioned how the board members
would be accountable.
‘‘The south ward has quite adiverse
character. You have the urban part, the
rural part and the beach communities.’’
Councillors voted in favour of
replacing its south ward committeewith
an elected community board in June,
following arepresentation review.
This was despite opposition from
residents’ groups,with 14 of the 22
submissions opposed to the change.
The proposedcommunity board would
havefive members elected at large, plus
the four ward councillors and the mayor.
The south ward committeecomprises
nine community members elected at its
first meeting in acouncil term, plus the
fourward councillors and the mayor.
Community members include
representativesfrom residents’
associations, the AmberleyReserves
AdvisoryGroup, the Hurunui Youth
Council and three independent
members.
South ward committeechairperson Jo
Hassall says she looked forward to
hearing the Local Government
Commission’s decision.
Under review ... Eleven objections have been received on the proposed Hurunui south
ward community board.
PHOTO: FILE
‘‘I do like the fact it is being taken to a
separateperson, who will look at it
independently.
‘‘It has gone through the right process
and whateverdecision is made is final.’’
The Local Government Commission is
an independent body that can make
decisions on the structure of local
government.
South ward councillor Vanessa
McPherson was among those who voted
in favour of establishing the community
board.
She said it would be ‘‘more
democratic’’ as elected board members
would be accountable to the whole
community and not just to the groups
they represented.
‘‘We are lookingatthe population
growth in Amberleyand Ithink moving
forward the south ward needs and
deserves democratic representation
that will support that growth.
‘‘I know there are some associations
and groups who feel they will lose their
voice, but councillors will still have
direct links with those groups.’’
The residents’ associations will also
be able to make deputations to the
community board.
Fellow south ward councillor Pauline
White voted against establishing asouth
ward community board.
She says the 11 appeals was ‘‘another
thread in athorough representation
review process’’.
‘‘The community is continuing to
engage, and this is evidence of their
vested interest in representation to fit
the current needs of the south ward.’’
The Local Government Commission
will make its determination by April 10.
In search of life-saving blood
By JOHN COSGROVE
Jazmin (Jaz) Mead is searching for
golden blood.
Not the extremely rare blood type, just
plasma so her uncle and many others
can live.
The former Kaiapoi High School
student discovered last year her uncle
needed regular infusions of lifesaving
blood products for the rest of his life.
‘‘We call it golden blood as it comes
from plasma,’’ she says.
Plasma is the goldcoloured liquid
part of blood that carries blood cells,
water, proteins and clotting factors
around the body.
It is precious, as it helps save lives,
hence why people often refer to it as
liquid gold.
Jaz set out to find how she could help
increase the supply of plasma and blood
to the New Zealand Blood Service and
help her uncle.
‘‘I wanted to find ways to help and one
of the ideas was to hold ablood drive
here at Kaiapoi High School.’’
Ayear later, Jaz’s planning and
determination were rewarded when
over 90 parents, teachers and senior
students lined up on Tuesday to donate
blood at the Kaiapoi School auditorium.
The goal was to help reduce the
desperate shortage of plasma and blood
products experienced in Canterbury at
present, by NZ Blood.
‘‘noone misses out when they need
blood, but we are so short of plasma,’’
says Laura Jones, Clinical Nurse Leader
with NZ Blood.
‘‘Plasma is ahuge driver for us at the
moment and every year the demand for
blood products gets bigger and bigger.’’
She says plasma is often called liquid
gold, as it is worth more per gram than
real gold.
Plasma can be donated more
frequently than blood, every two weeks,
and is used to boost the immune system
of people with low levels of antibodies;
control autoimmune disorders; and
provide clotting factor concentrates for
people with bleeding disorders.
‘‘It is great to see someone with
enthusiasm like Jaz, organise the blood
Giving life ... Kaiapoi High School principal Jason Reid (left) and KHS head girl Ariana
Roberts, with blood drive organiser and former student Jazmin (Jaz) Mead (right), who
Service as part of aproject started by Jaz ayear ago.
drive here at the school, as it inspires
people to become blood donors for life.’’
Kaiapoi High School principal Jason
Reid was one of those donors and says
the fact Jaz has returned to the school to
continue the drive to donate blood after
she has left to pursue acareer in
hospitality, is indicative of her
personality.
‘‘She wants to help people and that’s
Jaz’s nature.
‘‘She saw aneed with the younger
students last year, to help them get over
the fear of donating blood and hopefully
become lifelong supporters of the
service.’’
Laura Jones says it has been three
years since they last visited Kaiapoi
High, but there is always agreat
response to blood drives in North
Canterbury, with the next ones being
held in Rangiora on September 3and 4,
in Kaiapoi on October 29 and back in
Rangiora on Christmas Eve, December
24.
Several other high schools in North
Canterbury have also asked Jaz to
organise blood drives at their schools.
expertise across generations of some
families helping them to achieve their
goals. We would love your help by sharing
your story, or photos, on how she has
impacted on your life.’’
The aim is to collect ‘‘memories or
Efforts to develop anew cricket ground in
Amberleyare being delayed due to
confusion over who has responsibility.
Hurunui District Council chief
executive Hamish Dobbie said staff were
hampered in their ability to progress the
development of Amberley Eastern
Reserve, due to the wording of acouncil
resolution passed five years ago.
‘‘We just need to know who is giving
direction so we can getonand do it.’’
The council has been revising its
reserve management plan, which helps to
shape how large green spaces are used in
the region.
The Eastern Reserve attracted the most
interest during the recent consultation
with mixed views on the cricket ground
proposal.
Cricket isproposed to be the main sport
at the four hectare reserve, while a
potential play area, pump track and tennis
courts are also being considered.
In 2019, the council passed aresolution
where it directed the Amberley Reserve
Advisory Group to update its charter to
include the Eastern Reserve, with the
council retaining control of the reserve’s
development.
But Mr Dobbie said the wording of the
resolution had created confusion over who
made the final decision.
Alongside the council, there are a
number of interested parties including the
sporting organisations and local residents,
all wanting to have asay.
Donations sought for book fair
The call has gone out for donations of
books, magazines, puzzles and videos for
the upcoming Rotary Club of Rangiora’s
annual book fair in October.
Over the past three years, the Rotary
Club of Rangiora has distributed over
$206,000 raised from the book sale and
other events, into the North Canterbury
community.
The annual book sale is one of its main
funding sources and the money raised
helps cofund swimming lessons for
young children, life changing leadership
course participation for young people,
adventure camp participation and a
wide range of other community based
programmes.
Organisers say it is agreat opportunity
to clear out the cupboards at home and
donate old books, puzzles and videos to
aworthy cause, and later at the fair pick
anew book to read or puzzle to build.
Marked collection bins have been
placed in the Rangiora ZStation, Mitre
10 Mega Rangiora, and New World
Rangiora for people to donate old books
for the sale.
Working behind the scenes sorting
and collating the donated books is a
dedicated team of volunteers, including
Lorraine Brydone, who has been part of
the book sale for over 40 years.
‘‘During the year we spend one day a
week helping out in the storeroom,
sorting the books and puzzles by topics
and themes, then when the bins are put
out in midAugust we start helping out
every weekday to prepare it all so that
the three day long book sale runs
smoothly,’’ she says.
The Rotary Club of Rangiora October
Book Fair 2024 opens at the Rangiora
A&P Showgrounds on Thursday,
October 10, and runs to Saturday,
October 12. Hours will vary. Lorraine
says the hot topics among the over 40,000
items on sale this year will be puzzles,
scifi books and NZ non fiction.
‘‘We have also received from one
donor anumber of old books, some
dating from the early 20th century, plus
other single books sleeved or in box
sets.’’
Plenty to do ... Rotary Club of Rangiora
fair in October.
continue to bloom.
The Kaiapoi Garden Club has stepped
in to take over running the competition.
In recent years it has been the domain
of Altogether Kaiapoi, but with it
winding up, the future of the garden
Margaret Maw, the club’s president,
says the club, plans to hold the
Droughtrelief aims
to sustain farmers
Farmers in North Canterbury are
grappling with severe drought
conditions and with lambingwell
underway, it is tough time for many.
Drought creeps in gradually, its
effects accumulating over time, while
the path to recovery can often be just as
long and arduous.
The prolonged dry spell has hit the
Hurunui District particularly hard,
leaving farms strugglingwith feed
shortages and failed crops.
While many farmers have
implemented sound management
practices such as reducing livestock
numbers, the persistent dry conditions
have pushed many to their limits.
In amove that underscores the
government's commitment to rural
communities, our government is
boosting support for drought affected
farmers.
The latest support package, totalling
$68,000, combines government funding
with contributions from industry
partners.
This includes $20,000from the
government, matched by $18,000 from
agricultural organisations to provide
critical veterinary support.
An additional $30,000 will bolster the
Hurunui Mayoral Fund, targeting
assistance to the most vulnerable
farmers.
This aid builds upon earlier
measures, including amediumscale
adverse event classification in March
that unlocked $170,000 for Rural
Support Trusts.
The government has also made tax
relief available through the Income
Equalisation Scheme to help manage
cashflow challenges.
The drought'simpact extends beyond
immediate feed shortages, coinciding
with the crucial lambing and calving
season.
The government'sresponse
acknowledges that these
circumstances are beyond farmers'
control, with NIWA data confirmingthe
HurunuiDistrict as particularly hardhit.
The multifaceted approach to
supportinvolves collaboration
between various stakeholders,
including the Ministry for Primary
Industries' On Farm Support service,
local authorities, and industry groups.
This coordinated effort aims to
provide targeted assistance, from feed
supply management to financial aid.
As the backboneofNew Zealand's
economy, the agricultural sector's
resilience is crucial.
This support package not only
addresses immediate needs but also
signals the government's longterm
commitment to rural communities'
sustainability.
Farmers in need are urged to reach
out to their local Rural Support Trust,
emphasising that help is available.
As climate challenges persist, such
proactive measures will be vital in
maintaining the strength and
adaptability of New Zealand's
agricultural sector.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
River concerns
Dear Editor,
Kaiapoi and Cam Rivers
Iwould like to know what has happened
to our beautiful rivers around here.
Ihave lived here now for six years and
been whitebaiting and fly fishing on both
rivers.
Now, they have turned into adisgusting
mess —noweed or watercress—and the
fresh water mussels and cockabillies are
dying.
This is happening below Bramleys
Bridge at Tuahiwi on the Came and
below Three Streams on the Kaiapoi
River.
Why is this happening? Are the local
council or Environment Canterbury
putting poison in our rivers so they don’t
have to pay to clean them out with a
dragline.
They don’thave Lagarosiphon weed in
the water like Lake Dunstan and Lake
benmore.
Ican’ttake my grandchildrenfly fishing
there anymore —there is no mayfly
hatches or invertebratesfor the fish to
feed on.
What can we do about the state of our
rivers?
Yours,
Dog attack
Dear Editor,
Re your article on arogue dog attack in
the August 22, 2024 edition.
Dog owners need to be aware that their
precious pets arepotential killers.
More than once ownerswalking their
dogs along the Kowai River Track let
their dogs off leash to run free.
Some dogs cross the river, and Ihave
had sheep killed.
The dogs then go back to their owners,
hopefully.
But the damage is done. The dog owner
is unaware.
The farmer is left with amess to clean
up.
One of my ewes was attacked on
Tuesday, August 20, about 11.30am.
The dog looked like an American
Staffordshire Terrier from aGoogle
search.
It had gone by the time Igot arifle.
Ihad to put the ewe down, and one of
her lambs that had been bitten, died
over night.
The other is now apet.
We got off lightly.
It is the owners fault, not the fault of
the dog.
Yours,
Soldiersblock still on track
Tourism funding
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
The restoration of an historic
Hanmer Springs building remains
on track, despite abudget blowout.
The Hurunui District Council
will seek a$300,00 grant from the
Rata Foundation towards a
$425,000 funding shortfall for the
restoration of the former Soldiers’
Block in the Queen Mary Historic
Reserve.
The Soldiers’ Block was opened
in 1916 to rehabilitate soldiers
returning from World War 1, and
was later used as adrug and
alcohol treatment facility,while
the site also has cultural
significance for Ngāti Kurī.
Speaking at Tuesday’s (August
27) council meeting,chief strategy
and community officer Judith
Batchelor said project budget has
been revised to $3.601 million,
after $3.176 million was budgeted
in the council’s 2023 annual plan.
She said the funding shortfall
was due to expected increases in
materials costs and changes to the
heating system, while the removal
of linings and floor coverings
revealed structural elements
which were not shown on the
original building plans.
The remaining $125,000 will be
funded from the Queen Mary
Development Contributions Fund.
The funding will allow the first
two stages of the project to be
completed, with the building on
track to reopen on Anzac Day next
year.
Stage one is earthquake
strengthening and bringingthe
building to code, while stage two
will see the main hall reinstated
for community use.
The longterm vision will be to
establish amuseum with an
interactive experience called ‘‘A
Place of Light and Life’’, which will
tell the story of the site.
But it will require the
community to raise afurther $6
million anddiscussions have
begun around creating a
temporary exhibition.
Ms Batchelor said conversations
have alreadybeen held with the
Rata Foundation.
‘‘Our conversations with Rata
have been around how we can
keep the story alive during the
different stages of the project.
‘‘We have avideo and bed and
I’m confidentwecan get ourhands
on more informationfor the
exhibition space to provide awet
weather activity and an
educational opportunity for the
15,000 school children that visit
Hanmer Springs.’’
The council also approved the
use of $430,000, from interest
accrued from the Queen Mary
Development Contributions Fund,
to help kick start fundraising
efforts for the next stage.
Hanmer Springs councillor Tom
Davies said developing the Queen
Mary Historic Reserve, including
the Soldiers’ Block, is ‘‘a key
anchor project for Hanmer
Springs’’.
‘‘The support of the locals is just
amazing,’’ he said.
‘‘I have been lucky enough to
have alook inside acouple of times
and now that the panels have been
removed you can see the
architectural geniusofthe
building.
‘‘It is an absolute gemfor
Hurunuiand it will be something
we can be so proud of when it is
finished.’’
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Funding infrastructure for
tourist towns has no simple
solution, says Hurunui District
Council chief executive
Hamish Dobbie.
North Canterburytowns
Hanmer Springs and Kaikōura
are small communities which
punch above their weight to
service tourists.
Mr Dobbie said the cost of
providing additional
infrastructure such as toilets
and rubbish bins was largely
borne by ratepayers.
‘‘We appreciate visitors bring
money into the local economy
and sometimes we need to do
things infrastructurewise to
support that.
‘‘We don’t necessarily want
that to be borne by ratepayers,
but the cost has to be picked up
somewhere.’’
While local ratepayersmay
not use the public toilets or
rubbish, there were benefits
with visitors spending money in
the local community and
improved environmental
outcomes.
Local Government New
Zealand took the opportunity to
promote its message of the
need for alternative funding
tools, during last week’s local
government conference in
Wellington.
Anumber of councils have
been calling for
accommodation and tourism
levies, with arecent opinion
poll suggesting there was
public support.
But Mr Dobbie said
accommodation and tourism
levies would provide limited
benefit in Hanmer Springs and
he preferred raising the
International Visitor Levy,
which charged visitors at the
border.
‘‘If you just take the money
where the tourists sleep, does
that really enhance tourism
infrastructure overall.’’
Alternatively, alevy collected
at the border could be
distributed where it was
needed or where there were
opportunities, he said.
The Mackenzie District
Council increased its rates by
one percent so it could clean its
public toilets twice aday.
Mr Dobbie said abed tax
might make little difference as
few of those visitors may stay
the night in the district.
Tourism Minister Matt
Doocey said Tourism New
Zealand was reviewing the
International Visitor Levy and
an announcement would be
made soon on whether it willbe
increased.
While the levy was set $35
per visitor, options were being
considered to increase it to as
much as $100 per visitor.
The levy did not apply to
Australians or Pacific
Islanders.
Mr Doocey said he was aware
there was strong support for an
accommodation levy, but the
Government had yet to make a
decision.
He said the Government had
an ambitious agenda to double
export earnings.
Multi-usechurch facilityrising in Rangiora
By JOHN COSGROVE
The new multiuse John Knox
Rangiora Presbyterian Church and
John Knox Community Centre in
Rangiora is taking shape.
The centre’s exterior is now visible
and work is well under way with the
outfitting of the interior amenities,
says Rangiora Presbyterianminister
Reverend Jason King.
‘‘Everything is on schedule and we
expect the church to be opened early
next year.’’
This will be the third John Knox
church on the site on the corner of
High and King Streets.
Its predecessor, the second John
Knox Presbyterian Church, opened on
September 28, 1922, 50 years almost to
the day after early Rangiora settlers
had built the first John Knox church
across the road.
Following the Christchurch
earthquakes, the church had been
classified as an earthquakeprone
risk, and the congregation moved next
door to use the John Knox Centre for
services when the church buildingwas
demolished in 2014.
Rev King says the $3 million build is
almost fully subscribed,but some
funding must still be raised to outfit
parts of the building.
‘‘We have ordered some equipment
nowaswefeel it is prudent to get it
here before the costs risetoo much
higher.’’
He says ahuge thank you to all who
have stepped up financiallytosupport
the build.
‘‘Especially the many amazingly
generous supporters, parishioners
and the Presbyterian Church.
‘‘Thanks also to the Rata
Foundation, who believed in the longterm
value of this facility for the wider
Rangiora community,
‘‘Presbyterian Support next door
alsodeserves amentionasthey have
been wonderful, helping us out by
letting us share their space and use it
as achurch on Sundays.’’
He says once the complex is opened
next year, the congregationwill need
to find its feet as achurch.
‘‘We are keenly looking ahead to
finding out what the next church
season will be like, and to discover
what it means to be achurch in the
middle of Rangiora.’’
Rev King says this is nota
traditional church building.
It has been designed from the outset
as amultiuse facility for the
community.
It will offer 800900 sqm of space in
its five main community spaces.
There are also new offices for Rev
King and church staff, plus storage
and anew kitchen in the refurbished
existingbuilding.
‘‘A kind person donated acoffeemaking
machine, which Iwill see gets
warmed upeach day, it will be so
helpful to invite groups into the centre
with freshly brewed coffee,’’ he says.
‘‘One way people can help us out
now is by buying aseat for the 240seat
main auditorium,’’ he says.
Rev King says it is an exciting time
for the congregation, with everyone
New beginnings ... Rangiora Presbyterian minister Rev Jason King, gets the feel of his
eagerly awaiting the complex opening
early next year.
‘‘Already Ihave had many enquiries
from interested users and businesses
wanting to book space in our new
facility, which Ibelieve will serve the
Rangiora community well for many
years to come,’’ he says.
The reward ... Fantail eggs in anest found at the Silverstream Reserve in Clarkville. A
thriving native bird population is one of the many benefits seen at the reserve since the 2019
introduction of asuccessful trapping programme.
Bird song is returning
By SHELLEY TOPP
As achild Joan Whillans learnt the
benefits of trapping possums in native
bush on her family’s coastal Otago
property.
Now the retiree is using those skills to
lead the successful predatorcontrol
programme at Silverstream Reserve in
Clarkville.
‘‘The difference apredator control
programme makes to bird populations is
spectacular,’’ Joan says.
‘‘The effect on lizard and skink
populations is also dramatic.
‘‘Feral cats caught on Banks Peninsula
were found to have 15 to 17 skinks in their
stomachs from just one day’s feeding.’’
The trapping programme began in 2019
when Joan noticed despite the ‘‘valuable
planting’’ being done in the east area of the
reserve there were few birds there. It was
the same in the west of the reserve, which
had wellestablished planting.
Fast forward five years and the reserve’s
birdlife is thriving with traps having
removed more than 2500 possums, rats,
hedgehogs andmice, as well as some
stoats, weasels and feral cats.
‘‘The dawn chorus in September is
incredible,’’ Joan says. It could not have
happened without the dedicated work of
the volunteershelping Joan. `
‘‘They are all incredibly committed to
this programme, and most have been part
of this team for five years,’’ she says.
Constant support from the Waimakariri
District Council, notably greenspace
community projects officer Mike Kwant
and more recently Predator Free
Waimakariri ranger Richard Chambers,
who oversees predator control
programmes in Waimakariri, have also
played avital role in the trapping success
at Silverstream.
During arecent bird count, using the
Department of Conservation's bird count
system to maintain consistency in records,
the reserve was found to have good
populations of grey warblers/riroriro,
bellbird/korimako, kingfisher/kōtare and
fantail/pīwakawaka.
Other birds seen in the reserve outside
the time of the bird count include aNew
Zealand pigeon/kererū,alittle owl/ruru
nohinohi and atui/tūī.
‘‘The kererū is also seen on adaily basis
in late winter in apropertyneighbouring
the reserve, feeding in atree lucerne tree
and eating kōwhai leaves and flowers,’’
Joan says. ‘‘We are hoping it finds amate.’’
The biggest number of predators caught
in the reserve are mice. More than 1100 of
them have been removed since 2019.
‘‘Mice may appear to be insignificant
predators, but they can, and do, reach
birds’ nests on finer branches that larger
predators are too heavy to reach,’’ Joan
says.
Trapped predators are killed humanely
in DOCapproved traps instantkill traps,
and returned to nature in the reserve.
ConservationWeek call
to `take action for nature'
By SHELLEY TOPP
Take Action for Nature is the theme
forthis year’s Conservation Week,
which begins next Monday,
September 2.
The week is being celebrated in
Rangiora by the Waimakariri
District Council’s greenspace team
with apublic tree planting day in
Hegan’s Reserve at 2Dench’s Road.
There will be the opportunity to
plant native trees, build your own
pest trap, complete ascavenger hunt
and take home anative plant for
your own garden.
Asausage sizzle will also be held.
Conservation Week was originally
launched in 1969 by the New
Zealand Scout Association, with the
goal to promote greater interest in
the environment and encourage
people to take practical actions to
look after it.
It has been run by the Department
of Conservation (DOC) since 1987.
‘‘Every year Conservation Week
sees thousands of New Zealanders
getting involved with conservation
workbydoing conservation
activities at home or attending one
of many events hosted across the
country.
‘‘Creating change can be big or
small, when we pull together,wecan
make abig difference,’’ aDOC
spokesperson says.
‘‘New Zealand’s wildlife is still in
crisis with more than 4000 of our
native animals and plants
threatened or at risk.
‘‘Conservation Week is achance to
bring everyone together to do
something, big or small to create
change.’’
The week runs until September 8.

Bell ringers sought
By JOHN COSGROVE
Numbersare dwindling and it’s
hoped some new blood will come and
join them to help create wonderful
music.
Call them Ringers or
Carillonneurs, they would like to be
known as handbell ringers or
Rangiora Bells.
Ahandbell is adesigned to be rung
by hand.
They are not unlike the oldfashioned
school bells with iron
clappers inside, but these produce
delicate notes through asmaller,
expertly crafted handbell that is
made by Schulmerich Handbells
from Pennsylvania, America.
The tune of the bell depends on its
size, and pitch, which can be further
finetunedbyshaving off the metal.
Ahandbell group (a team,
ensemble, choir or orchestra) will
have aset of handbells covering all
the notes over two or more octaves
(including all the sharps and flats).
They play these together and in
sequence to create apiece of music,
complete with melody and harmony.
Rangiora Bells began as the
Richmond Handbell Ringers in 2000,
after apublic demonstration by a
visiting Japanese specialist,
encouraged the congregation at the
Richmond Methodist Church in
Christchurch, to learn the art of bell
ringing.
In 2022 the Rangiora Bells, under
the baton of Clare Dolheguy, was
formed after the Richmond Bells
founder retired.
Subtle tunes ... Playing the top notes
(treble) using Schulmerich Handbells
from Pennsylvania, America, at the
Rangiora Bells practice session, are
Lesley Godkin (left), Clare Dolheguy
and Christine Cox.
Clare and five of the group live in
Rangiora, while the rest are from
Christchurch or Woodend. Clare says
people are most welcome to come
down and either listen or take part.
Abasic knowledge of music is
needed. Over the years the bell
ringers have entertained at service
clubs, retirement villages, weddings
and funerals, plus been guest
performers for singing groups such
as the Canterbury Singers and the
Canterbury Philharmonic. They have
also played in Australia.
Rangiora Bells meet every
Thursday afternoon in the lounge at
Trinity Methodists Church in
Rangiora at 1pmfor an hour and a
half of practice.
Cut-a-thon for wellbeing
A24hour cutathon at Tom’s
Chop Shop in Rangiora will
help raise fund for the
Community Wellbeing North
Canterbury Trust.
The Trust supports the
mental health and wellbeing
of men, women, families and
communities across North
Canterbury.
Tom’s Chop Shop barber,
Charlie Knox, came up with
the idea for the cutathon
which will run from 9am
Saturday, September 21 to
9am, Sunday, September 22.
It is the third cutathon
Charlie has been involved
with.
Charlie has been at Tom’s
Chop Shop for three years and
has been barbering for nine.
His motivation for the cutathon
is driven by his own
mental health challenges.
‘‘I’ve had some battles with
mental health,’’ says Charlie.
‘‘I’ve got clients who have
anxiety, kids who are
depressed.
‘‘Guys share their stories,
their hardships with me. It’s
important to help our clients.
‘‘We do our best as barbers
but we’re not mental health
experts. That’s why Ithought
it would be good to fundraise
for Community Wellbeing.
‘‘They’re local. They help
people who are struggling
with their mental health and
all their services are free.’’
theme of the Week this year is
Community is... what we
Deirdre Ryan, Community
Wellbeing’s General Manager
says Tom’s Chop Shop 24
Charity Cutathon is aperfect
example of this theme, in
action.
‘‘I’m very grateful to Tom’s
Chop Shop and all the barbers
for undertaking this charity
event,’’ says Deirdre.
‘‘Not only is it raising vital
funds for mental health and
wellbeing services in North
Canterbury, it’s helping to
break through the stigma
surrounding mental health.
Especially mental health for
men.’’
The five barbers doing the
24 hour challenge are Charlie,
Regan, Joel, Logan and Tom
Weddell, the owner of Tom’s
Septic tank warning
Failing to ensure aseptic tank
is maintained could put your
family's health at risk.
Environment Canterbury is
reminding rural residents to
check on their septic tanks.
It is estimated there are
about 34,000 onsite wastewater
systems, often called septic
tanks, across Canterbury.
The most common system for
single households in
Canterbury is aprimary
treatment tank and land
application system, such as a
bolder pit or trench.
But there are also some
newer secondary treatment
systems.
If these systems are not
looked after properly there
could be serious consequences.
Faulty systems can
contaminate the land on your
property or even the drinking
water supplies of the whole
community.
Resource management
technical lead Jessica
Newlands warns problems
often begin when people fail to
maintain their systems and the
tank or gully trap overflows,
causing ponding of wastewater
on the land surface.
Landscaping, vehicle
movements or the installation
of children’s equipment can
heighten the risk.
Institute of Environmental
Science and Research (ESR)
senior groundwater scientist
Bronwyn Humphries says
anecdotal evidence links
seepage with children’s play
areas.
‘‘Kids might just assume it
is amuddy puddle, and not
bother to tell their parents.
‘‘There was acase in
Canterbury where children
had sustained gastro for two
years before the family
finally figured out the kids
were playing in awaste
disposal field near their
playground.’’
Champion ... Ravensdown New Worldbutcher Sam Weller with the Pact Packaging
Young Butcher of the Year cup she won last week, she is now looking forward to her chance
to take on the world in Paris next year.
the rest in her trade
By JOHN COSGROVE
Heeding the advice of judges she has
faced over the past eight years, plus
plenty of practice, helped
Ravensdown New World butcher Sam
Weller to be crowned Pact Packaging
Young Butcher of the Year after an
intense meatcutting contest last
Thursday night.
Sam, aged 30, was entered as the
wild card for the competition, and says
it all came down to presentation and
finesse.
‘‘I took on boardall the advice the
judges have given me over the years,
and Ijust worked hard trying to make
every cut and display the best Icould.’’
Sam says her partner Karen has
been her biggest supporter over the
years.
‘‘She’s my PR agent, she’s always
spurring me on to do better, and then
she takes photos of everything and
posts them on social media.’’
Having apassion for creating
different and interesting cuts and
recipes suitable for customers to
easily replicate at home, has long kept
Sam interested in doing morewitha
simple meat cut.
‘‘When Istarted at New World
Rangiora while Iwas still young and at
school, Iwas only packing up beef cuts
and chickens.
‘‘But Iwas thinking about what I
could do with the product and that has
kept me wanting to learn more.’’
She was offered abutcher's
apprenticeship in 2015, and started
learning how to be creative with meat
products.
‘‘I spend abit of time looking for
inspiration online.
‘‘I look at what others have done,
then try and find ways to make it
possible for my customers to recreate
it in their kitchens.’’
She entered her first competition in
2016 and by 2018 was the World
Champion Butcher Apprentice.
Last Thursday night Sam Weller beat
outfive other finalists in atwohour
marathon in Auckland, where they
prepared cuts such as abeef tbone,
chicken leg, pork leg, lamb shanks and
the mystery cut of lamb saddle.
The young butchers were judged for
their skills including speed,
organisation, health and safety and
how clean bones were at the end.
Her victory secured her aspot to
compete next year in Paris against the
world's top butchers.
Funding announced
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Ayouth employment programme has
received funding for another 12 months
beyond 2025.
Social Development and Employment
Minister Louise Upston announced $9
million in funding last week, which will
allow the Mayors’ Taskforce for Jobs
(MTFJ) programme to be extended to
June 30, 2026.
She made the announcement at the
MTFJ annual meeting, which was held
as part of the Local Government New
Zealand conference in Wellington from
Wednesday to Friday, August 21 to 23.
The announcement followed calls
from North Canterbury’s mayors
recently for funding assurances for the
programme, which helps young people
get into employment.
The MTFJ programme is funded by the
Ministry for Social Development.
Ms Upston said the Government’s
focus is on getting people into
employment and ‘‘supporting
communityled programmes with a
proven track record’’.
The national unemployment rate
continues to climb, reaching 4.6 percent
in the June quarter, with young people
aged 16 to 24years the hardest hit.
Kaikōura district councillor Vicki
Gulleford said she was pleased with the
announcement.
‘‘We don't know how this will be
distributed throughout the participating
programmes or what the expected
number of outcomes will be.
‘‘However, we are very hopeful that
the strong successes Kaikōura has
achieved through our previous delivery
of the programme will stand us in good
stead for continuing with asimilar or
increased contract for the next year.
‘‘Kaikoura District Council will
continue to partner with Te Hā o
Mātauranga to deliver the programme
locally.’’
The Kaikōura MTFJ programme was
contracted for 38 sustainable (at least 91
days), fulltime employment placements,
for the year to June 30 and placed 48
people, including 44 youth.
The Hurunui programme is contracted
for 15 placements, and placed 16 young
people. Hurunui Mayor Marie Black said
she was ‘‘thrilled there is alonger term
vision to enable the programme to
continue to grow’’.
‘‘The mahi is important for our young
people, to remain connected, confident
and contribute to our district.
‘‘This extended focus is important for
our wonderful employers and our
partnership with MSD.’’
The Waimakariri District Council only
joined the programme at the beginning
of last year, but has enjoyed some
positive outcomes, Mayor Dan Gordon
said.
MTFJ Waimakariri facilitator
Elizabeth Trevathan said around 130
referrals or contacts from job seekers
have been received in the last 12 months.
‘‘On average we have around 40 job
seekers actively engaged at any one
time.’’
While the Waimakariri programme
was funded for 14 placements, it placed
29 people, including 26 youth in the year
to June 30.
Afurther 20 young people have been
placed into parttime, casual or fixed
term employment contracts.
‘‘This programme is agreat example of
localism in action,’’ Mr Gordon said.
‘‘It utilises local knowledge and
relationships to help young people
secure work and start careers that will
help them throughout their lives.
‘‘There is areal demand and need for
it and our council will be seeking to
continue the programme and continue
helping young people in Waimakariri.’’
New chairman determined to rebuild show
By TIM CRONSHAW
@AlliedPress.co.nz
Former minister of agricultureand
speaker of the House Sir David Carter is
determined to rebuild the scaledback
CanterburyA&P Show into afinancially
strong position.
The Banks Peninsula farmer was
elected chairman of the Canterbury A&P
Association (Capa) board at its annual
meeting in Christchurch.
He said the ‘‘iconic’’ show week running
since 1862, was part of Christchurch and
Canterburyand would not exist without a
strong show.
‘‘So it’s been stopped by world wars and
Covid19 and I’m not going to see it stop
because of the precarious financial
position.’’
Sir David said the goal was to run agood
show this year and build momentum for
next year with alongterm ambition to
cement it back into place for ‘‘at least
another 160 years’’.
New board membershad arrived
knowing the finance director announced
at the annual meeting the show’s financial
position was ‘‘precarious’’, he said.
‘‘So we have gone in with our eyes wide
open, but with the determination ...and
the support of our urban and rural
community this show can survive and in
fact it can prosper.’’
Other shows breaking even or making
asmall profit in asingle day with a
smaller attendance showed it was
possible to do this with athreeday show
attended potentially by 100,000visitors,
he said.
The new board planned to put atight
rein on costs and was asking the public
to buy early tickets and going to business
people, sponsors and trade exhibitors
about providing financial backing.
To return to astrong financial
position and be alongterm success,
volunteers and other show supporters
needed wide support, he said.
‘‘My phone has been red hot today
with people saying this is wonderful and
we want the show to survive. Well it
won’t survive with lip service. It will
only survive if everyone gets behind it.
‘‘It’s an important connection between
New chairman ... Sir David Carter
rural and urban and we have got to make
sure we don’t destroy that linkage and
that’s what I’m determined to do by
making sure the show survives.’’
Sir David said when he heard there
was talk of not having ashow this year
he was ‘‘absolutely dismayed’’.
The last show had lost alot of money
and there was no point dwelling on
postmortems as there was aneed to
move forward positively, he said.
‘‘The show is afundamental part of
Christchurch’s history —ithas been
running in some form since 1862 and is
the longestrunning agricultural show in
the South Island. While it is called the
Christchurch show this year, we want to
return to the New Zealand Agricultural
show in 2025. The show is literally the
country coming to town.’’
Sir David has been amember of Capa
for 50 years and has along history of
serving the rural community politically
and at governance level.
He was about 17yearsold when he
first attended the show. Amember of the
association since at least 1972, he was an
exhibitor as aSimmental breeder for
PHOTO: TIM CRONSHAW
about 10 years until committing to
politics.
He said backing already received
from local businesses was positive.
‘‘Our event partners Event Hire are
underwriting parts of the Christchurch
Show, and we can’t thank them enough.
They have stepped up and said the show
must go on.’’
Christchurch mayor Phil Mauger said
there were solid plans in place to ensure
its longevity.
‘‘This is part of our history, and it is
important that it continues for our city.
So, Ihope that everyone will get behind
it and get to the show rain, hail or shine.
As acommunity we need to support this
iconic event.’’
Event Hire coowner Phil Anderson
27
said they were shocked when they heard
the show wasn’t going to run. He said
while the show would be scaled back
slightly all the things people loved about
it would still take place. Livestock
displays, stock judging, trade sites,
competition events and entertainment
would continue.
To bring the crowds in, the entry price
has been halved for for adults to $20 for
adults and Event Hire is seeking a
sponsor to subsidise the cost of children
tickets.
In another change the show will be
shifted to Thursday, Friday and
Saturday, rather than Wednesday to
Friday. Mr Anderson said this would
reduce previous queues and parking
pressure on the traditional last day of
Friday.
Christchurch City Council managers
have assured the board of its full
support and appreciated the value of a
healthy show continuing for the local
community and economy.
He said the lesson from previous years
was the need for the show community
working constructively with the board.
‘‘There is ageneral committee which
is large, but it’s made up of very
dedicated show people and in the past
that general committee has had a
dysfunctional relationship with the
board. The board Iput together is now
50% independent members and 50%
general committee members. That sort
of trust in each other and cooperation
between the general committee and the
board is going to be absolutely essential
to get the show working.’’
Independent directors elected on the
board were Hazletts operations
manager Peter Engel and BDO audit
senior manager Ethan Hill, along with
Bryce Murray, Brent Chamberlain and
Lex Peddie from the general committee.
Rain still in short supply in Nth Canterbury
TIM.CRONSHAW
@ALLIEDPRESS.CO.NZ
Rising lamb prices are providinglittle
relief forNorth Canterbury farmers,who
have already sent stock awayasamild
winter follows adry autumn.
The region was declared in drought in
March.
Leading up to winter, farmers had
jettisoned stock, including productive
animals, by 20% to 30% becauseofthe
ongoingdry conditions compounded by
lower scanning.
The result of the smallercarryover is
meat companies are reacting to fill their
chains, with prices nosing towards the
high $6 per kilogram mark last week.
Front of mind for farmers as they ride
the winter out with lambing at their
doorstep is feeding remaining breeding
stock, as replenishing rain is still in short
supply.
Atough year financially is on the back of
rising costs and earlier low returns,
although banks are responding with lower
interest rates after the Reserve Bank cut
the official cash rate.
North Canterbury Federated Farmers
meat and wool chairwoman and Marble
Point Station farmer Sara Black said
rising prices were too late for many
farmers.
‘‘I know for us the trading stock we
would sell coming into the springwehad
to get rid of at the end of autumn. Even
though there is ablip and somegreat
prices around it does seem to be asupply
issue born out of scarcity rather than a
long term trend coming from the external
markets.
‘‘It’s probably not sustainable and
somethingalot of farmers who are going
through this situation won’t be able to
benefit from.’’
High prices showed there must be few
stock around, she said.
She said farmers in their area had come
through amild winter so far, with some
15°C days.
‘‘It’s adouble edged sword, as winter
can be such acold, dark and miserable
time and I’m sure for many farmers it’s
the least enjoyable time of the year.
This year it’s been more bearablefrom
aliving point of view, but the added
stress of not topping up the moisture
levels means the dry doesn’t really go
away as aresult.’’
For some farmers, June rain was the
first ‘‘doubledigit’’ rainfall
experienced since midDecember.
Mrs Black said they had 50mm in the
first two weeks of June, which was the
most substantial rain received this
year.
Other properties ranged from 10mm
to 50mm in Cheviot.
‘‘It was agood rain, but we are
dealing with low moisture levels in the
soiland lots of creeks and water ways
just aren’t even running. Even our
riversare at reasonably low levels at
the moment.
‘‘Everyone has been looking towards
spring since autumn and hoping alittle
bit of moisture will get us through the
traditionally dry summers. But the
systems have been few and far between
and when they do come —30mm or
50mm —itgets slurped up very quickly.
So moreisneeded.’’
Sara Black
Another 27mm of rain and 25mm of
snow last week at Marble Point leaves
them with abit moremoisture when the
heat arrives.
Farmersmade early decisions by
bringing in costly feed or finding
grazing and offloading dry ewes when
scanning results wereback or exiting
breeding ewes with triplets to reduce
stocking rates.
They knew once they were in winter
and set stocking into lambing options
would be limited as they held on until
feed arrived in spring.
‘‘Everyone pulled as many levers as
they could in the autumn. Going
through adry summer isn’t unusual in
this part of the country, but staying dry
into autumn is.’’
Mrs Black said awinter without long
cold periods had helped stretch
supplementary feeding, as budgets
were tight.
Many farmers in lower areas had
started lambing.
For farmers on steeper hill country,
suchasMrs Black and her husband,
Matt, who farm Marble Point’s 2388ha
between Hanmer and Culverden, this
won’t start until midSeptember.
They are in an equity farming
partnership running 4100 Corriedale
ewes and 430 Angus beef cattle.
Mrs Blacksaid putting their 1100 twotooths
on an irrigated blockfor the first
time and another 1200 ewe hoggets
going out to grazing had proven to be
the right move.
‘‘It was agood decision and we
wouldn’t have been able to keep them
home anyway.Itwas probably the only
decision we could have made. Idon’t
know of any other alternative.’’
Farmers would continue to farm
conservatively until the weather
turned, she said.
‘‘We’ve held on and hopefully feed
comes away and the little bit of rain we
had is enough to start it off, but we
wouldn’t mind afollow up. All farmers
are trying to do the best with what
they’vegot.
The Hurunui Adverse Event
Committee and the North Canterbury
Rural Support Trust had provided
farmers with great support, she said.
To lighten spirits aFarm Break event
is being organised with comedian Ben
Hurley MC Richard Loe at Foxdown
farm in Scargill Valley on September 6.
Pine plantings ... Federated Farmers say anew report should be amajor wakeup call for
the Government.
PHOTO: FILE
Report a ‘wake-up’
Federated Farmers say the ‘Why Pines?’
report by the Our Land and Water
National Science Challenge should
serve as amajor wakeup call for the
Government.
Federated Farmers meat &wool chair
Toby Williams, says it may have been
published as areport, but it reads more
like ahorror story for New Zealand’s
farmers and rural communities.
‘‘The study makes it very clear that
under the current policy settings we will
continue to see millions of hectares of
productive farmland plastered in
plantation pine trees.
‘‘Planting pine trees as far as the eye
can see may well help reduce emissions
or improve water quality, but somebody
has to ask the question atwhat cost?
‘‘I can tell you it will come at the
expense of rural communities, food
production, the economy, and our native
biodiversity. There simply has to be a
better way.’’
The Our Land and Water National
Science Challenge report shows that
meeting the freshwater bottom lines will
require widespread land use change
from farming to forestry.
‘‘One of the studies found that even if
there was no carbon price, one fifth of
sheep and beef country would still need
to be converted to pine forest to meet
freshwater goals,’’ Williams says.
‘‘This must be of huge concern to the
Government, who scrapped the failed
He Waka Eke Noa pricing programme
because it was going to have the exact
same effect.’’
Fixing New Zealand’s unworkable
freshwater rules and rethinking our ETS
forestry settings were both included in
Federated Farmers' list of policy
priorities for restoring farmer
confidence.
‘‘While the Government has done lots
of good things to restore farmer
confidence, unfortunately the Labour
Government’s freshwater bottom lines
remain on the books, Mr Williams says.
‘‘These rules are completely
unrealistic and unworkable. Federated
Farmers has consistently called for
them to be scrapped, with anew focus
put on replacing the broken RMA
system.
‘‘If the Government want farmers to
increase the value of our exports and
adapt to changing conditions, we need to
be able to change our land use as
opportunities pop up.
‘‘Unfortunately, under the current
system, every time afarmer tries to do
something different on their land they’re
met with nothing but red tape and
expensive consenting costs.
‘‘Our current environmental policy
framework is completely broken.
‘‘The Government needs to work at
pace to urgently repeal unworkable
freshwater bottom lines and replace the
RMA.’’
The North Canterbury News, August 29, 2024
Nth Canty builds toward Southbridge Shield
By LINDSAY KERR
The North Canterbury rugby sides
build up fixture before facing
Ellesmere might not have gone the way
it hoped following a3149 loss at the
hands of the Canterbury Pasifica side
last Saturday.
But lessons learned will assist this
week’s training sessions.
Played at Belfast’s Sheldon Park, the
game was unconventional.
Thirteen tries were scored, many of
them involving inventive play, and
others weak defence from the
respective opposition line ups.
Added to this was the unpredictable
nature of astrong north west wind.
North Canterbury started the better,
scoring an excellent solo try from full
back Anthony Tavendale.
It attacked again and looked to have
scored, but then from an attacking line
out five metres out, the ball was lost
and the home team had aturn on
attack.
It took full advantage of aseries
penalties in their favour and scored the
first of their eight tries.
Another try followed five minutes
later before Tavendale was on hand
again to slice through the defence to
score his second try.
Pasifica scored two more tries in the
half and with the oranges nearing they
enjoyed a2212lead.
Into injury time North Canterbury
clawed aslice of the deficit back when
left wing speedster Takaya Saito
scored atry with Scott Allin converting.
The pattern of the second half began
in asimilar fashion to the first, but this
time it was Pasifica that scored first.
North Canterbury responded almost
immediately from the kick off and the
forwards charged at the line to score.
With the scoreline at 2427, the game
was still up for grabs from either side.
Pasifca scored next and North
Canterbury looked to follow suit five
minutes later.
The try was denied and the
momentum again swung in Pasifica’s
favour. It scored the next try and the
advantage was then 17 points.
Two minutes from time, replacement
half back Jayden Stokes scored from a
31
blindside move with Allin converting
from the sideline, and into the wind.
Pasifica had the last say when the
pack powered over the line to score.
Tavendale’s attacking skills in the
North Canterbury backline was a
feature of their play, and loosie Dan
Brooker led the charge for the 80
minutes.
Next Sunday at the Rangiora
Showgrounds, North Canterbury’s final
game of the season will see it defend
the Southbridge Shield in its annual
outing against longtime rival
Ellesmere.
Canterbury Pasifica 48 beat North
Canterbury 31 (Anthony Tavendale 2,
Ben Gold, Takaya Saito, Jayden Stokes
tries. Scott Allin 3conversions).
Kaiapoi Golf Opentees off next month
By SHELLEY TOPP
The continued support of acommunityminded
sponsor has given the Kaiapoi
Golf Club the certainty it needs to hold
its annual Kaiapoi New World Golf
Open.
Kaiapoi New World'sowner/operators
Gareth and Laura Caldwell have been
supporting the event since its
reintroduction three years ago.
‘‘Their continued interest and
sponsorship in this annual event
provides the certainty we are so grateful
for,’’ club chairman Jack Oldridge says.
‘‘This golf open has really developed
into avery sought after event on the
golfing calendar, very much in response
to what we can offer the participants
both in prize money and the many
additional attractions on the day.’’
Gareth and Laura say supporting the
Kaiapoi community is something very
important to them.
‘‘We couldn’tbeprouder to partner
with the Kaiapoi Golf Club as amajor
sponsor to help support this great
tournament again.
‘‘Like so many communitybased clubs
there are always so many people in
behind the scenes giving up their own
time for the ongoing success of the club
so the community are able to enjoy what
is on offer and Kaiapoi Golf Club is no
different.
‘‘Jack and all the team at the club are
genuinely great people so it is areal
pleasure to be involved with them.’’
Gareth is planning to take part in the
event but says he is not avery good
player and will try to get some practice
in before the big day to improve his
chances.
However Laura says he is very
competitive.
The 18hole event will be held on
Southbrook Rubbish PitClosedon
30 and31August
The general rubbish pit at Southbrook Resource
Recovery Park will be closed to the public for
scheduled maintenance on Friday 30 and
Saturday 31 August.
Contractors will beonsite torenew asection of
the floor that has reached the end ofits life.
To ensure safety of the public and to keep
disruption to aminimum, weneed to close the
general rubbish pit toreplace asection of the pit.
This includes constructing reinforcing and steel
floor runners, and pouring anew layer of concrete.
The concrete needs time to cure before the
general rubbish pit can be opened up again, and
we will be using high-strength fast-curing concrete
to limit the closure to two days.
During these two days the green waste area,
recycling centre and Resale Shop will remain open,
and wewill still accept Council-branded rubbish
bags at the recycling area. The site will be fully
operational onSunday 1September.
If youneed to disposeoflargeramounts of rubbish
during thesetwo days,weadviseyou to visitEcoDrop
Styx Mill, whichisopenfrom7am–4.30pmdaily.
Councillor Robbie Brine said Southbrook Transfer
Station was built over 25years ago.
“More than 416,000 tonnes ofrubbish has been
dropped into the pit and pushed into the compactor
since the site opened in mid-1998, and this section
of the pit floor has reached the end ofits life.
“This renewal will ensure that we can keep providing
the expected level of service toour customers until
we can complete our planned site upgrades.”
“The Key ofknowledge (Luke 11:52)
EVIDENCE THAT JESUS
CHRIST ROSE FROM THE
DEAD
The belief in the resurrection ofJesus Christ is a
matter of life and death. For, if it is nottrue, there
is no hope for afuture life. The Old and New
Testament writings prophesied that Jesus Christ
would be raised from the dead. The disciples,
having seen their risen Lord, preached the full
import of his being raised to life again. All who
listened could share in that hope. There is also
historical proof from pagan writers at the time of
Christ who testified to these things.
