Greetings to all passengers, and welcome<br />
aboard <strong>Bangkok</strong> <strong>Airways</strong>.<br />
One <strong>of</strong> our key sustainability goals is to<br />
deliver happiness in every journey for our<br />
passengers, driven by the commitment <strong>of</strong><br />
everyone within our organisation to improve<br />
our services. This commitment aligns with<br />
our efforts to protect the environment,<br />
society, and communities. In this issue, I will<br />
update you on the airline’s environmental<br />
operations, highlighting our mission to<br />
achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.<br />
<strong>Bangkok</strong> <strong>Airways</strong> has launched the “Low<br />
Carbon Skies by <strong>Bangkok</strong> <strong>Airways</strong>” initiative<br />
as part <strong>of</strong> environmental efforts towards<br />
becoming a sustainable airline. We recently<br />
partnered with PTT Oil and Retail Business<br />
Public Company Limited (OR) to pilot the<br />
use <strong>of</strong> sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on<br />
<strong>Bangkok</strong> <strong>Airways</strong>’ Samui-<strong>Bangkok</strong> route,<br />
demonstrating our commitment to reducing<br />
carbon emissions in flight operations, the<br />
largest part <strong>of</strong> our carbon footprint.<br />
You may be wondering what SAF or<br />
sustainable aviation fuel is. SAF is fuel<br />
produced from biomass materials, including<br />
used cooking oil, animal fats, and agricultural<br />
waste. It has similar chemical properties to<br />
conventional fossil jet fuel but can reduce<br />
carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80%.<br />
Once again, I would like to thank all our<br />
passengers and business partners for their<br />
support, as well as express gratitude for the<br />
dedication <strong>of</strong> our executives and employees.<br />

has won two Skytrax awards – <strong>2024</strong><br />
World’s Best Regional Airline and Best<br />
Regional Airline in Asia – for the eighth<br />

most spectacular ceremonies – the Royal<br />
Barge Procession. This awe-inspiring<br />
event, steeped in centuries <strong>of</strong> tradition,<br />
is a grand display <strong>of</strong> the kingdom’s deep<br />
connection to its monarchy, religion, and<br />
cultural heritage.<br />
The royal procession’s return to the<br />
Chao Phraya River promises to captivate<br />
<strong>Thai</strong>s and international visitors alike, <strong>of</strong>fering<br />
a rare glimpse <strong>of</strong> the grandeur <strong>of</strong> <strong>Thai</strong><br />
royal rituals. This year, His Majesty the<br />
King will preside over the river journey<br />
to present Kathin robes at <strong>Bangkok</strong>’s<br />
Temple <strong>of</strong> Dawn.<br />
The Royal Barge Procession was first<br />
held in times <strong>of</strong> both war and peace.<br />
Originally, the barges served practical<br />
purposes, transporting troops, goods, and<br />
even the royal family. Over time, this evolved<br />
into a ceremonial procession, symbolising<br />
the divine status <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Thai</strong> monarch as a<br />
protector and unifier <strong>of</strong> the nation.<br />
The procession, as we know it today,<br />
was further refined during the Rattanakosin<br />
period (1782-1932), particularly under the<br />
reign <strong>of</strong> King Rama I. The event’s symbolism<br />
was solidified, and it became an integral part<br />
<strong>of</strong> important royal and religious ceremonies,<br />
including the coronation <strong>of</strong> new kings, royal<br />
weddings, and the annual Kathin ceremony,<br />
where monks are presented with new robes.<br />
This year, the procession will feature<br />
an impressive fleet <strong>of</strong> 52 intricately<br />
decorated barges, each a masterpiece <strong>of</strong><br />
traditional <strong>Thai</strong> craftsmanship. Floating<br />
works <strong>of</strong> art, the barges are adorned with<br />
gold leaf, lacquer, and ornate mosaic.<br />

At the heart <strong>of</strong> the flotilla is the<br />
Suphannahong, the king’s personal<br />
barge. This majestic vessel, shaped like<br />
a mythical swan, is considered the most<br />
important and revered vessel in the fleet.<br />
A symbol <strong>of</strong> the king’s divine authority,<br />
it is reserved exclusively for the<br />
reigning monarch. The Suphannahong<br />
is followed by the Anantanakkharat<br />
barge, featuring a seven-headed Naga<br />
serpent that symbolises the king’s<br />

Each barge has its own unique<br />
design and significance, such as the<br />
Anekchatphuchong, which carries the<br />
royal regalia and <strong>of</strong>ferings, and the Narai<br />
Song Suban, depicting the Hindu god<br />
Vishnu riding the Garuda, symbolising<br />
the king as a divine ruler.<br />
The Royal Barge Procession is a<br />
meticulously choreographed event,<br />
involving over 2,200 oarsmen specially<br />
trained for this prestigious occasion.<br />
Dressed in traditional costumes, the<br />
oarsmen row in perfect unison, their<br />
synchronised movements reflecting the<br />
precision and discipline required for<br />

Discover Wiang Kum Kam,<br />
the ancient capital buried in<br />
Chiang Mai’s suburbs<br />
It’s common knowledge that Chiang<br />
Mai, now the main city <strong>of</strong> North<br />
<strong>Thai</strong>land, was once the capital<br />
<strong>of</strong> a kingdom called Lanna,<br />
meaning “a million rice fields”.<br />
But few are aware that before<br />
1296, when Chiang Mai<br />
was established,<br />
that honour fell to<br />
a city called Wiang<br />
Kum Kam.<br />
So where is this<br />
Wiang Kum Kam?<br />
And why is it so<br />
unknown if it was at<br />
the heart <strong>of</strong> a growing<br />
empire? The first<br />
question is easy to answer,<br />
but the second needs<br />
more explanation.<br />
Wiang Kum Kam is hidden in plain sight,<br />
just six kilometres south <strong>of</strong> downtown<br />
Chiang Mai, squeezed between two ring<br />
roads and long ago encompassed by the<br />
city’s relentless expansion.<br />

Now that we know where it is, let’s<br />
consider how it was lost, why it was<br />
forgotten and what remnants are<br />
worth visiting today.<br />
When King Mangrai (sometimes<br />
spelled Mengrai; see box) took<br />
possession <strong>of</strong> Haripunjaya (now<br />
Lamphun) in 1283, he decided to<br />
base his new kingdom at Wiang<br />
Kum Kam on the west bank <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Ping River, and had a moat dug to<br />
protect his new capital.<br />
Unfortunately, the area was<br />
prone to flooding, and within a few<br />
years Mangrai decided to move<br />
his capital further upstream after<br />
seeing several auspicious signs,<br />
including fearless deer at the foot<br />
<strong>of</strong> the mountain Doi Suthep. He<br />
founded Chiang Mai on the plain<br />
between the mountain and the<br />
Ping River, and the rest, as they say,<br />
is history.<br />
While Wiang Kum Kam continued<br />
to be inhabited, the problem <strong>of</strong><br />
flooding did not abate, and in the<br />
early 16th century, so archaeologists<br />
believe, the city was hit by a disastrous<br />
flood that buried most buildings with<br />
sediment, and those who survived<br />
abandoned the site.<br />
This extreme weather event may<br />
also have been the cause <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Ping River changing its course,<br />
which happened around the same<br />
time, leaving Wiang Kum Kam on<br />
its east bank where it had once been<br />
on the west bank; an unusual case<br />
<strong>of</strong> a city being relocated without<br />
actually moving.<br />
Submerged under sediment,<br />
with nothing visible but the tops<br />
<strong>of</strong> stupas, the city was gradually<br />
forgotten and Wiang Kum Kam<br />
disappeared from history.<br />
The site continued to be<br />
ignored during much <strong>of</strong> the<br />
20th century and was gradually<br />
occupied by residential houses,<br />
until in the 1980s the <strong>Thai</strong><br />
government’s Fine Arts Department<br />
announced that it was going to<br />
unearth Lanna’s lost city.<br />
Now, some 40 years on, the<br />
remains <strong>of</strong> over 40 temples have<br />
been revealed, though most <strong>of</strong> them<br />
consist <strong>of</strong> little more than brick<br />
foundations, a stupa and a boundary<br />
wall, so an exploration <strong>of</strong> the entire<br />
site would be a bit repetitive.<br />
Fortunately, there are pony and<br />
carriage teams (or electric carts<br />
for big groups) waiting to take you<br />
round nine <strong>of</strong> the most interesting<br />
temples. The ride takes around 45<br />

minutes and costs 300 baht per<br />
carriage (400 baht per electric cart).<br />

just east <strong>of</strong> the Ping River on the<br />
middle ring road, where relics from<br />
the site such as stucco carvings<br />
provide a tantalising introduction.<br />
The pony riders speak little English,<br />
so during the tour, look out for<br />
information boards giving what<br />
little history is known, as well as<br />
QR codes at some sites that link to<br />
short, informative videos by the<br />
Fine Arts Department.<br />
Unlike <strong>Thai</strong>land’s World Heritage<br />
sites at Sukhothai and Ayutthaya,<br />
which have been cleared <strong>of</strong> all<br />
modern sights, Wiang Kum Kam’s<br />
temples sit shoulder-to-shoulder<br />
with modern houses, stores and<br />
workshops, so a visit gives a glimpse<br />
<strong>of</strong> contemporary suburban life as well<br />
as opening a window on the past.<br />
The first temple passed on the<br />
tour is Wat Ku Pa Dom, where the<br />
brick foundations <strong>of</strong> an assembly<br />
hall, ordination hall, stupa, well<br />
and boundary wall sit a couple <strong>of</strong><br />
metres below the surrounding land.<br />
An angled retaining wall here and<br />
at other temples along the way is<br />
designed to prevent further damage<br />
from flooding.<br />
One <strong>of</strong> the most important sites<br />
is Wat Chang Kham, a modern<br />
temple built on the site <strong>of</strong> an older<br />
temple, Wat Kamthom, which is<br />
where excavations <strong>of</strong> the ancient<br />
city began in 1984. All that remains<br />

<strong>of</strong> Wat Kamthom is the base <strong>of</strong><br />
the viharn and stupa, but several<br />
elements <strong>of</strong> Wat Chang Kham are <strong>of</strong><br />
interest, including a shrine to King<br />
Mangrai, a wonderfully decorated<br />
scripture library, several statues <strong>of</strong><br />
mythical creatures and a bodhi tree<br />
supported by colourful poles.<br />
The ruins <strong>of</strong> Wat E-Kang and<br />
Wat Pupia are probably the best<br />
preserved <strong>of</strong> the ancient sites. Both<br />
feature a stupa and the remains<br />
<strong>of</strong> several buildings, though as<br />
elsewhere the retaining walls show<br />
how the brick foundations are well<br />
below ground level. Wat Pupia is the<br />
only temple with some elements <strong>of</strong><br />
stucco carvings remaining near the<br />
top <strong>of</strong> the stupa.<br />
The temples’ names hint at the<br />
difficulty <strong>of</strong> guessing their origins,<br />
as no records are available from<br />
that era. For that reason, they<br />
have been named after modern<br />
associations. Wat E-Kang’s name<br />
is derived from a group <strong>of</strong> monkeys<br />
that once inhabited the area and<br />
Wat Ku Pa Dom was named after the<br />
landowner before excavation.<br />
The pony makes a final stop<br />
in the shelter <strong>of</strong> trees at Wat<br />
Chedi Liam, which appears to be a<br />
modern temple, though the square<br />
stupa with five receding levels and<br />
Buddha images in niches was first<br />
erected by King Mangrai in memory<br />
<strong>of</strong> his wife. Take the chance to<br />
wander round the tranquil site with<br />
its brightly decorated assembly hall,<br />
ordination hall and spirit houses,<br />
then hop back in your carriage for<br />
the last leg <strong>of</strong> the ride back to base.<br />
MIGHTY MANGRAI<br />
King Mangrai (1239-1317) inherited<br />
his father’s kingdom at Chiang Saen in<br />
1259 and then in 1262 he established<br />
Chiang Rai, which he named after<br />
himself. From there, he extended<br />
his power westwards to Fang and<br />
then southwards, ousting the weak<br />
Haripunjaya Empire and founding<br />
his own Kingdom <strong>of</strong> Lanna at Wiang<br />
Kum Kam in 1286. Rather than fight<br />
the floods there, he relocated upriver<br />
to Chiang Mai, which became the<br />
new capital <strong>of</strong> Lanna in 1296. There<br />
he reigned supreme until one day, as<br />
legend has it, he was struck down by a<br />
bolt <strong>of</strong> lightning in the exact centre <strong>of</strong><br />
the old city.<br />
Despite his prowess as a warrior,<br />
Mangrai is remembered for an act <strong>of</strong><br />
diplomacy. When King Ngam Muang,<br />
ruler <strong>of</strong> Phayao, found out that King<br />
Ramkhamhaeng <strong>of</strong> Sukhothai had<br />
slept with his wife, Ngam Muang was<br />
all for executing his rival. But Mangrai<br />
persuaded him to accept a payment<br />
from Ramkhamhaeng to atone for<br />
this misdemeanour.<br />
After this, the three rulers became<br />
firm friends and Mangrai’s new allies<br />
helped him plan his “new city” (Chiang<br />
Mai). As cameras and smartphones<br />
were not available in Mangrai’s day, we<br />
have no photographic evidence <strong>of</strong> his<br />
appearance. Yet there is a remarkable<br />
similarity in all the statues dedicated to<br />
him around North <strong>Thai</strong>land, rendering<br />
him with a perfect physique, handsome<br />
face and proud demeanour.<br />
At Wiang Kum Kam, you can see<br />
his likeness in the Information Centre,<br />
and if so inclined, you can commune<br />
with his spirit, which is believed to<br />
reside in the elaborate spirit house at<br />
Wat Chang Kham.<br />

As city slickers with a passion for both urban living<br />
and the great outdoors, it’s only natural that after the<br />
chaos <strong>of</strong> the Big Mango, we start dreaming <strong>of</strong> lush<br />
greenery and clean air. That’s when the hidden gem <strong>of</strong><br />
Bang Kachao pops into our minds.<br />
Dubbed <strong>Bangkok</strong>’s Green Lung, Bang Kachao is actually a<br />
man-made island nestled in the Phra Pradaeng district <strong>of</strong> Samut<br />
Prakan province, just south <strong>of</strong> <strong>Bangkok</strong>. The island was formed<br />
when a canal was constructed across a loop <strong>of</strong> the Chao Phraya<br />
River to ease river traffic and navigation.<br />

place perfect for a one-day escape.<br />

square kilometres, Bang Kachao is a<br />
natural treasure trove <strong>of</strong> farmland,<br />
mangrove forests, and wetlands.<br />
Home to farming and fishing<br />
communities, as well as cultural<br />
and natural attractions like Wat<br />
Bang Nam Phueng Nok, Bang<br />
Nam Phueng Floating Market,<br />
and Si Nakhon Khuean Khan<br />
Park and Botanical Garden, Bang<br />
Kachao <strong>of</strong>fers a glimpse into<br />
traditional <strong>Thai</strong> life. For tourists<br />
and city dwellers alike, it provides<br />
a refreshing contrast to <strong>Bangkok</strong>’s<br />
rapidly growing concrete jungle, all<br />
without requiring a lengthy journey.<br />
On this visit, we took a relaxing<br />
30-minute cab ride straight to the<br />
heart <strong>of</strong> Bang Kachao. However,<br />
fans <strong>of</strong> river trips can catch a cheap<br />
and convenient ride from the piers<br />
at either Wat Bang Na Nok or Wat<br />
Khlong Toei Nok or from other nearby<br />
piers that <strong>of</strong>fer rides to the island.<br />
We kicked <strong>of</strong>f our adventure<br />
with a visit to Bang Kachao Farm,<br />
an organic enterprise where<br />
zero-waste practices take centre<br />
stage. Guests can enjoy a farm tour<br />
featuring six different zones. We<br />
began with a peek at how Yanagi<br />
mushrooms are expertly grown<br />
and nurtured. Next, we marvelled<br />
at the Earthworm station, where<br />
these tiny heroes transform organic<br />
matter into rich compost, fuelling<br />
growth in the Seedlings and<br />
Vegetable Growing zone.<br />
We then visited the Duck,<br />
Chicken, and Geese area to see how<br />
these feathered friends help manage<br />
pests and provide nutritious feed<br />
for fish in the surrounding pond.<br />
In the Zero Waste zone, we learned<br />
how the farm cleverly repurposes<br />
food scraps and waste into compost<br />
for use on the property and for<br />
sale. Finally, we met the friendly<br />
Stingless Bees, who help pollinate<br />
the plants and enrich biodiversity<br />
across the farm. At the end <strong>of</strong> our<br />
tour, we discovered how every zone<br />
plays a vital role in maintaining the<br />
farm’s zero-waste ecosystem.<br />

making salted eggs and eco-prints<br />
using plants, as well as a caférestaurant<br />

To keep our adventure rolling<br />
smoothly, we rented a bike for<br />
our next destination. One <strong>of</strong> the<br />
best things about Bang Kachao is<br />
how easy and affordable it is to<br />
rent bicycles from various spots<br />
around the community. We snagged<br />
a bike for just 50 baht, and our<br />
transportation for the rest <strong>of</strong> the<br />
day was sorted. On our trusty steed,<br />
we zipped around this green oasis,<br />
making our day <strong>of</strong> exploration<br />
a breeze.<br />
As self-confessed caffeine<br />
addicts, we can’t survive more<br />
than three hours without a fix,<br />
so our next stop was C<strong>of</strong>fee Toys.<br />
This whimsical café is a haven for<br />
c<strong>of</strong>fee lovers and toy collectors<br />
alike. Every nook is filled with a<br />
delightful collection <strong>of</strong> toys lovingly<br />
gathered by the family who runs the<br />
place. Stepping into the café is like<br />
entering a time capsule that whisks<br />
you back to childhood, all while<br />
savouring a perfect brew.<br />

As we stepped into their welltended<br />
little garden with its rocklaid<br />
pathways, we were greeted not<br />
by a feast but a charming surprise:<br />
a traditional <strong>Thai</strong> paper-cutting<br />
art workshop led by Grandma<br />
herself. She showed us how to<br />
create a simple paper decoration,<br />
Phuang Ma Hot, but what stole our<br />
hearts was her genuine smile and<br />
warm hospitality.<br />
Next, we were ushered into<br />
the dining room for a beautifully<br />
curated Samrub <strong>Thai</strong> Kuenwang<br />
– a delectable feast featuring the<br />
season’s specials prepared with<br />
traditional flair and just a hint <strong>of</strong><br />
new twists by the creative cook,<br />
Jutinut Tassanasonwicharn. We<br />
highly recommend their Maroom<br />
Rak, a dish <strong>of</strong> deep-fried moringa<br />
pods so irresistibly crunchy that<br />
you’ll find yourself reaching for<br />
more and more. Another standout is<br />
the Ma Hor Som Kaew, a delightful<br />
appetiser that explodes with<br />
flavours in every bite. Made with<br />
tangerine, bilimbi, and sweetened<br />
minced pork, it perfectly balances<br />
sweet, sour, and salty notes for a<br />
truly refreshing treat.<br />

House. This unique spot blends the charm<br />
<strong>of</strong> a treehouse with the comfort <strong>of</strong> a hotel,<br />
<strong>of</strong>fering a stylish retreat bathed in fresh air<br />
and forest tranquillity.<br />
By the time we reached the pier at Wat<br />
Bang Nam Phueng Nok, we were already<br />
reminiscing about a day filled with farm<br />
fun, delicious food, and lively activities. We<br />
couldn’t help but start planning our next<br />
escape to this lush haven, away from the<br />

sustainability upgrades, the company is running its<br />
three airports – Samui, Sukhothai and Trat – under<br />

Limited has launched the “Low<br />
Carbon Skies by <strong>Bangkok</strong> <strong>Airways</strong>”<br />
initiative to propel the airline<br />
towards sustainability by reducing<br />
emissions. In collaboration with PTT<br />
Oil and Retail Business Public<br />
Company Limited (PTTOR), the<br />
airline is pioneering the use <strong>of</strong><br />
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)<br />
on flights between Samui and<br />
<strong>Bangkok</strong>. The initiative is part <strong>of</strong><br />
a broader strategy to boost<br />
sustainability <strong>of</strong> airports under<br />
<strong>Bangkok</strong> <strong>Airways</strong>’ management.<br />
<strong>Bangkok</strong> <strong>Airways</strong>’ President<br />
Mr. Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth said<br />
the airline is committed to becoming<br />
a sustainable business under the<br />
ESG (environmental, social and<br />
governance) framework. “Low Carbon<br />
Skies” aims to reduce emissions across<br />
the business, particularly in flight<br />
operations that contribute the largest<br />
share <strong>of</strong> emissions.<br />
The airline’s sustainability<br />
mission includes efficient resource<br />
management and alternative energy.<br />
<strong>Bangkok</strong> <strong>Airways</strong> recently partnered<br />
with PTTOR to use SAF on a pilot<br />
flight, demonstrating its commitment<br />
to clean energy. This initiative aligns<br />
with global efforts to achieve netzero<br />
carbon emissions by 2050, as<br />
outlined by the International Civil<br />
Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and<br />
the International Air Transport<br />
Association (IATA).<br />
“To reaffirm our status as the best<br />
regional airline globally and in Asia,<br />
as recognised by Skytrax for eight<br />
consecutive years, we are dedicated<br />
to continuously improving service<br />
quality to ensure that passengers<br />
receive exceptional travel experiences.<br />
Moreover, <strong>Bangkok</strong> <strong>Airways</strong> aims<br />
to contribute to green aviation in<br />
<strong>Thai</strong>land and the region. Over the<br />
past few years, we have implemented<br />
several measures to reduce CO2<br />
emissions, such as efficient aviation<br />
fuel use, which in 2023 alone reduced<br />
emissions by 11,321 tonnes or<br />
over 200 kilograms per flight. Using<br />
SAF further reduces CO2 emissions<br />
by approximately 1,346 kilograms<br />
per flight,” Mr. Puttipong said.<br />

the <strong>Bangkok</strong> <strong>Airways</strong> collaboration<br />
supports the aviation industry’s<br />
transition to a sustainable future.<br />
SAF has similar chemical properties<br />
to jet fuel but is produced from<br />
used cooking oil and can be blended<br />
with jet fuel without requiring engine<br />
modifications. SAF for the inaugural<br />
flight was sourced and imported<br />
by PTT International Trading, a<br />
PTT subsidiary.<br />
