A Note From Rabbi Niles
Dear friends,
The Hebrew month of Elul, which coincides this year with the month of September, is sometimes broken
down by its Hebrew letters: Alef, Lamed, Vav, Lamed. In this way, it can serve as an acronym for a famous
verse from the Song of Songs that is often used at Jewish weddings: Ani L’dodi V’dodi Li, “I am my beloved
and my beloved is mine.” This is an appropriate sentiment and mindset to have as we prepare during this
month for the union with God during the Days of Awe, as well as for our reconnection with the Jewish
community in Napa.
One Jewish tradition during the month of Elul is to blow the shofar every morning, a sort of “wake up call”
to get us ready for the New Year and the High Holy Days. May we work at being “woke” as Jews at this
time. May we engage in study and prayer to help direct our minds and hearts toward the sacred days
ahead of us. May we strive to look within ourselves but also to support one another in our community. This
has not been an easy time to be a Jew, but all we need do is reach out to our fellow brothers and sisters
for support, inspiration, and love. We are not alone!
B'shalom, Niles
President’s Message
Safety is my focus this month. Thankfully our primary building is well protected
with LATCH access and alarms. We hire security staff (usually Mark) for all
services and other guards were onsite each day of Summer Camp.
I became concerned that we needed to strengthen security for the
administration building as I watched families cross through our campus to
swim school daily. We recently installed a new lock system and video
equipment to protect our essential staff.
We are also in process of applying for a Security Grant to strengthen our
perimeter and thwart attacks.
With tensions escalating worldwide the Rabbi & I agreed it was time for refresher training
regarding Situational Awareness and Active Shooters. Note: this training is not limited to
your attendance at CBS. It’s as useful to you when you’re on vacation or out and about the
community!
Please sign up if you can attend in person - Sunday, Sept 8th 4-6pm. For those who choose,
this training/discussion will be available online.
