Beach & Yacht Club once again on June
5, 2024, for the Westchester Women’s
Bar Association Annual Dinner and Installation of
Officers and Directors. Your host, for obvious
reasons, had no jokes to share about the wildfire
smoke that pushed the full event indoors last year.
Not to dwell, because this year had a balmy beginning
from the time of arrival for set-up and
photographs, and the mood only livened once
all members and guests joined for cocktail hour.
The WWBA was honored to begin the
evening’s program with remarks by WBASNY’s
newly elected President Marea L. Wachsman.
President Wachsman provided greetings to dinner
attendees and spoke about the value of
WBASNY membership, giving prominence to the
many reasons to belong. President Wachsman
also outlined her goals and agenda for the upcoming
WBASNY year, and addressed some initiatives
to be taken on, such as advocacy in sup-
PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE
I cannot help
but reflect on how
lucky I am for having
reaped the
many benefits of
all the Westchester
Women’s Bar Association
has had
to offer for nearly
Sherry A. Bishko
two decades. In
2006, I walked into the law firm of
Rosenthal & Markowitz, LLP for a
job interview with Past Westchester
Women’s Bar Association Presidents
Linda Markowitz, Esq. and Kathy N.
Rosenthal, Esq. Their first question
was, “Are you a member of the
WWBA?” They immediately signed
me up as a new member, then hired
me, in that order! I am now President
of this great organization during
our 50th Year – our Golden Anniversary
– which I hope to celebrate
each and every month of my Presidency!
I have had the opportunity to
serve the Westchester Women’s Bar
Association as Recording Secretary,
Vice President, and, most recently,
as President-Elect. For me, however,
the most rewarding roles with the
WWBA have been serving as cochair
of both the Membership and
Mentorship Committees. In these
capacities, I am able to speak with
individual Westchester Women’s Bar
Association members, work with our
attorney mentors and law student
mentees, and get to know them as
individuals. Each of our 550 memcontinued
President’s Message
from page 1
“Each of our 550
members brings
a unique set of
incredible skills and
accomplishments to
the WWBA. The
WWBA’s membership
is our value, strength,
and power.”
bers brings a unique set of incredible
skills and accomplishments to the
WWBA. The WWBA’s membership is
our value, strength, and power.
As WWBA President, I am committed
to expanding our membership but
need your help. The WWBA, WBASNY,
and other Bar Associations throughout
the country are seeing steep declines
in Bar membership. The American Bar
Association has witnessed a 30% drop
in member dues since 2017. Newly
admitted attorneys are failing to see
the value of Bar membership and seasoned
attorneys who are Bar members
will be retiring in the next decade as
part of the “gray wave.”
Our Westchester Women’s Bar Association
membership declined during
COVID but we have worked hard to
increase membership to pre-pandemic
levels and we are now the second largest
chapter of WBASNY. My mission
as President is to continue to build on
this growth. The WWBA Mentorship
Program is flourishing and we have
over 100 student members who we
work with to impart the value of the
WWBA including professional development,
networking and leadership
opportunities. This year our mentorship
committee paired dozens of student
mentees with WWBA member attorneys
and organized several programs
for student mentees at the Elisabeth
Haub School of Law at Pace Univer-
~ In Memoriam ~
HONORABLE SONDRA M. MILLER
The WWBA’s beloved
Founder, Past President and
life-long devoted member,
the Honorable Sondra M.
Miller, passed away on August
7th. The WWBA has
felt her loss in a real and profound
way. In many ways
Judge Miller embodied and “was” the
WWBA and it is difficult to contemplate
going on without her. Judge
Miller’s life and career were spent forwarding
the WWBA’s mission of advancing
the social, economic and legal
status of women through the law.
She was a pioneer, a warrior and one
of a kind.
Judge Miller graduated from
Wellesley College in 1950 and Harvard
Law School in 1953, as part of the
law school’s first class to admit
women. Her accomplishments in the
legal community are almost too numerous
to enumerate. Judge Miller
joined the bench in 1983 when she was
elected to the Westchester County
Family Court. Three years later, she
won election to the Supreme Court for
the Ninth Judicial District. Judge Miller
was designated to the Appellate Division,
Second Department in January
1990 and was the first woman from
the Ninth Judicial District to earn this
appointment. She retired from the
bench in 2006. Following her retirement,
Judge Miller served as distinguished
judge-in-residence at Pace
University Law School. She worked
in private practice with McCarthy
Fingar LLP as Chief Counsel and head
of appellate practice and mediation and
arbitration. Most recently and until her
retirement, Judge Miller was Chief
Counsel to the firm of Goldschmidt
& Genovese LLP where she lead their
Appellate Practice and Mediation and
Arbitration Groups.
Judge Miller was a tireless volunteer
on judicial committees, bar associations,
professional and civic organizations.
She was a founding
member of the WWBA and
served as our President from
1979-1981. Judge Miller also
was a constant in WBASNY
and served as a devoted member
and as Vice-President. She
served as co-chair of the New
York State Family Violence Task Force,
as Director of the Office of Family Services
for the New York State Office of
Court Administration, Director of Legal
Services of the Hudson Valley, and
Director of the Benjamin N. Cardozo
Society. In 2004, she was appointed by
Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye of the Court
of Appeals to chair the newly created
Matrimonial Commission to recommend
reforms to the divorce process
in New York. Judge Miller served as
chair of the Ninth Judicial District Committee
to Promote Gender Fairness in
the Courts, Commissioner of the
Governor’s Permanent Judicial Committee
on Justice for Children, and Commissioner
for the Study of Youth Crime
and Violence and Reform of the Juvenile
Justice System.
Judge Miller also served on the
Pace University Law School Board of
Visitors, as vice president of the
Harvard Law School Association, on the
New York State Bar Association Committee
on Courts and the Community,
and as Director of the Association of
Family and Conciliation Courts. She was
a founding member and a devoted
champion of the Judges and Lawyers
Breast Cancer Alert, also serving as its
president and vice president.
Judge Miller’s achievements are incredible
and numerous and the WWBA
is grateful to call her our own. When
we ask, “How can we go on without
her?” The answer is that we have been
afforded her leadership, knowledge, tenacity
and spirit since the WWBA’s inception.
She has prepared us and we
are grateful. Thank you, Judge Miller
– we will all miss you. ◗
Immediate Impact
Scholarship
Judge Sandra Forster (’79) and
Adele Lerman Janow (’90) were long
time members of the WWBA who
passed away and for whom the Pace
University Law School’s Alumni Association
would like to honor with a named
Immediate Impact Scholarship. Judge
Forster was a vivacious, curious, and
intellectual woman who loved the arts,
culture, nature, and playing sports when
girls were not always welcome to do so.
She received a Bachelor’s degree from
the University of Rochester, and attained
her JD from Pace Law School while raising
two children. She had a thriving
legal career including serving as Town
Justice in Greenburgh and was ever
present and an integral part of he
Westchester Women’s Bar Association.
Adele Lerman Janow was a dedicated
speech and language teacher, making
a significant impact on emotionally and
physically challenged children. She received
her Bachelor’s degree from
Emerson, a Master’s degree from NYU,
and a JD from Pace Law. Her gratitude
and commitment to service was evidenced
by her serving as President of
the Pace University Law School Alumni
Association.
To commemorate the lives of these esteemed
women, Pace University School of
Law’s Alumni Association is requesting donations
for an Immediate Impact Scholarship
with a goal of $5,000. Once the goal
of $5000 is reached, the Judge Sandra
Forster and Adele Lerman Janow Scholarship
will be awarded as a one-time award
to a current student at Haub Law.
What can you do? As a Westchester Women’s Bar Association
member I am asking you to first renew your membership.
Our membership year runs from June 1, 2024 to
May 31, 2025. It is now September and if you have not
growth in new membership rather than chasing renewals.
Additionally, please get involved. Come to our Board meetings,
join a committee, and participate in our many volunteer
opportunities. Finally, I am asking each and every current
Westchester Women’s Bar Association member to bring
in a new member to the WWBA. If each member can enroll
one new member for the 2024-2025 year, we will
double our membership. Again, since the WWBA’s value
is our members, think of how much value each new member
will contribute!
I am thrilled to kick off this year. I look forward to
expanding and growing the Westchester Women’s Bar Association
with you! ◗
OFFICERS - JUNE 5, 2024
from page 1
port of the Equal Rights
Amendment (ERA) appearing
on the ballot this November.
Several of us had recently returned
from the WBASNY
Convention in Saratoga
Springs where we not only
celebrated the installation of
President Wachsman, but celebrated
our member Joy S.
Joseph, Co-Chair of the
Families, Children & Courts
Committee, as she received
the Stephanie Kupferman Juvenile
Justice Award for her
outstanding achievement in
legal matters involving juveniles.
Congratulations, Joy!
Immediate Past President
Amanda K. Rieben was honored
with proclamations from
Westchester County Executive
George Latimer and New
York State Senator Shelley
Mayer. She began her outgoing
remarks with a quote
from Theodore Roosevelt,
“Far and away the best prize
that life offers is the chance
to work hard at work worth
doing.” With that theme in
mind, Amanda gave an
overview of the programs,
events, and strides attributed
to her tenure, performed with
a sense of fulfillment through
the benefits that the WWBA
provides to the legal community.
The WWBA is truly grateful
to Amanda for her leadership
this past year, as she
worked devotedly to advance
the mission of
WBASNY and the WWBA,
aided us through transitions
including the hiring of our
excellent new Executive Director,
Megan Starstrom, and
launched new initiatives with
foresight, leaving the WWBA
on even more solid ground
for the years ahead.
The Honorable Lisa Margaret
Smith, retired Magistrate
Judge for the Southern
District of New York, and recent
Past President of the
WWBA (2020-2021), administered
the oath of office
to the incoming officers and
directors, and was herself
sworn in as a State Director
later that evening. We were
thrilled to have Judge Smith
perform this role.
Once sworn into office,
our newly elected President
Sherry A. Bishko took the podium
for her enthusiastic first
remarks, beginning with an
account of her own initiation
to the WWBA during a job
interview with Past Presidents
and law partners Linda
Markowitz and Kathy N.
Rosenthal. President Bishko
then outlined a mission for the
year ahead that incorporates
the continued growth of the
WWBA, and its robust initiatives,
particularly at a time
when bar association membership
numbers have
dropped nationally. Congratulations
Sherry, and we
look forward to your exceptional
leadership as the year
unfolds.
The WWBA was finally
treated to our keynote
speaker for the evening, the
Honorable Anthony
Cannataro, Associate Judge
of the New York State Court
of Appeals. Judge
Cannataro engaged the audience
with humor and substance
in an address that,
among other topics, mused
on how the effects of the pandemic
might shape the next
generation of attorneys. We
An Interview with Amanda K. Rieben
Susan L. Pollet
Chair of the Archive and
Historian Committee
Q: When and why did you
become involved with the
WWBA?
A: I became involved with
the WWBA in 2014 after the
birth of my first daughter. I
had been practicing at a
non-profit in New York
County and was looking to
work in Westchester County,
but I did not have any contacts
and/or resources in the
Westchester community. I felt
that joining a bar association
was the best way to
make new contacts, as I explored
different opportunities
in the Westchester County
legal community.
The WWBA and its
membership surpassed any
expectations that I had. One
of the WWBA members assisted
me in my vocational
search, putting me in contact
with members of the
community. She also provided
me with invaluable
advice and guidance on
what programs and events
to attend to further to make
additional contacts and further
explore my legal interests.
Through her own vocational
experiences and stories,
she also helped me assess
my future goals and aspirations.
Q: In what ways have you
been active in the WWBA?
A: I have been active in the
WWBA in many ways. I have
served on the WWBA Board
and as one of the Co-Chairs
of the Families, Children
and the Courts Committee
the “FCC Committee”) since
in or about 2018. In my role
as Co-Chair of the FCC
“I have spent all but one year of
my legal career focusing on
family and matrimonial law . . . I
knew that I wanted to devote my
career to assisting others with
their family law related issues.”
Committee, I have helped to
plan several continuing legal
education programs, as well as
other lunch and learn opportunities
and seminars. Additionally,
I have served on the
Annual Dinner Committee and
have acted as a Mentor as part
of the Mentorship Committee.
I have also served as Recording
Secretary, President
Elect, and WWBA President. In
my term as WWBA President, I
made it a priority to further community
integration and raise
awareness to various social issues
impacting individuals,
with a particular focus on domestic
violence. With the assistance
of several non-profits
in the legal community, including
the Pace Women’s Justice
Center, Hope’s Door, My Sisters’
Place, and Legal Services
of the Hudson Valley, we hosted
eight programs on domestic
violence during my term. As
WWBA President, I also focused
my attention on the
WWBA day-to-day operation
and fiscal strength. With the
support of our membership,
board and officers and directors,
we created new fundraising
opportunities, membership benefits,
and we made other
changes to help the WWBA
hopefully continue to grow.
Currently, I am now serving
as a WWBA State Director,
as well as the WWBA liaison to
the Women’s Bar Association
of the State of New York
(“WBASNY”) Domestic Violence
Committee. In this capacity,
I hope to become more involved
at the state level with
various issues impacting victims
of domestic violence
Q: Why do you think there is
still a need for a women’s bar
association?
A: I believe that a women’s bar
association is important to
newer lawyers and law students
to help them curate their legal
interests and pursue various
legal endeavors. Additionally,
while one can attend CLE and
other programs online, I
strongly feel that there is no
substitute for in-person networking
opportunities and the relationships
that you develop
through in-person events is
important. The contacts and
friends I have made through
the WWBA through the years
have been instrumental to my
career growth.
Through the support of the
WWBA and its members, I have
also been able to become more
actively involved and give back
to the legal community. The
WWBA provides several different
educational and volunteering
opportunities, as well programs
to connect with other
members of the organization.
Q: Please tell us about your
legal career.
Amanda K. Rieben
A: I have spent all but one
year of my legal career focusing
on family and matrimonial
law. In law school I
interned my 1L and 2L summers
at non-profits that
worked exclusively with victims
of domestic violence and
sexual assault. From these
experiences I knew that I
wanted to devote my career
to assisting others with their
family law related issues.
After law school, I initially
accepted a job with a
class-action law firm, which
provided me with important
legal research, writing and
communication skills, but I
was not able to connect with
clients and impact their lies
in the same way that my internships
had allowed me.
After my first year, I pivoted
and accepted a job in New
York County with an agency
called the Center for Family
Representation (“CFR”). As
a Staff Attorney at CFR, I defended
parents in abuse/neglect
proceedings under Article
10 of the Family Court
Act. This job provided me
with invaluable litigation experience.
It showed me the
significant barriers that my
clients faced given their limited
financial resources and
the profound impact that effective
legal representation
can have on their case and
family reunification. Many of
my clients grew up in the
child welfare system, either living
in fosters homes and/or
having had allegations
brought against their parents.
Connecting my clients
with essential services and
resources for themselves and
their children was also essential
to helping them break the
cycle of the child welfare
system’s involvement.
After my employment
with CFR, I primarily worked
with domestic violence victims,
first as a Staff Attorney
with Legal Services of the
Hudson Valley, and later as
Director of the Pace Women’s
Justice Center’s Walk-In Legal
Clinic. In both roles, I
zealously advocated and assisted
domestic violence victims
in family offense, custody,
support, and divorce
matters. I also participated in
several Know Your Rights programs
and trainings, speaking
to various staff and clients from
other agencies in the community,
helping them to understand
their legal rights and options.
I am now a Partner at the
law firm of Abrams Fensterman,
LLP in their Family and Matrimonial
Law Department, working
out of the firm’s White
Plains Office. In this role, I assist
clients with several types of
family law related legal matters,
including pre-nuptial and postnuptial
agreements, divorce,
legal separation, custody and
child support. My prior experiences
in the public sector play
a critical role in my approach
toward each case and have
provided me with an understanding
of the dynamics of
domestic violence, and the ways
in which it may manifest itself
with higher net worth clients. I
am empathetic toward each
client’s needs, and recognize
from my prior vocational experiences,
the long-term impact
that a case may have not only
on my client, but their family,
including their children.
Q: Which community activities
are you involved in?
A: In addition to my involvement
with the WWBA, I previously
served as a Board Member
at my youngest daughter’s
pre-school. I will also now be
serving on the board of the
Westchester Women’s Bar Association
Foundation, which is
the charitable arm of the
Westchester Women’s Bar Association.
Q: How have you balanced
your legal career with your
personal life?
A: It is not easy to maintain
balance in the legal profession.
I think that my three daughters
and my husband have provided
me with perspective, and much
needed reprieve from the demands
of this profession. Every
day despite various deadlines
and the stresses that legal work
can pose, I spend time with
them, whether attending various
sporting or art-related activities,
dinners, hikes, or travelling.
I cherish this time with
my family. I am also grateful
to them for the perspective
they have given me and continue
to provide me with in
my career. They are a constant
reminder of the importance
of family, which I think
is essential for lawyers not to
lose sight of even when litigating
the most contentious
family/matrimonial law related
issues.
Q: What do you wish to accomplish
in the future?
A: I want to continue practicing
family and matrimonial
law, helping clients to navigate
what may often be one
of the worst times in their
lives. I also intend to remain
involved in the community
through the Westchester
Women’s Bar Association
and the WWBAF. In my capacity
as WWBA State Director,
and WWBA liaison to
WBASNY’s Domestic Violence
Committee, I would like
to help continue to raise
awareness on issues impacting
domestic violence victims.
On August 1, 2024 the WWBA hosted its annual Summer
Networking Event with the Rockland County Women’s Bar Association
(RCWBA) at Sambal, Thai & Malay Restaurant in
Irvington, NY. Nearly 50 members from the WWBA and RCWBA
attended! Members from both Bar Associations met on the
rooftop of Sambal overlooking the beautiful Hudson River. This
summer networking event has become a “must attend” and
provides an opportunity for members of both Bar Associations
to network and touch base during the summer months.
Exotic cocktails and tasty passed hors d’oeuvres were had
in an electric and exciting atmosphere. The evening began at
5:30 pm and kicked off with colleagues and friends mixing and
catching up. Officers of both the WWBA and RCWBA were in
attendance as well as many long standing WWBA members
and many members of the judiciary. In addition, many new
WWBA members, student members and even a few prospective
members attended the event and lent a feeling of excitement
and opportunity.
The evening ended outside on Sambal’s beautiful deck
with the sun setting and members chatting and having a great
time. We look forward to continuing this tradition each and
