Kairong Liu brings his
work, “Forty Years After
Westmar,” to Le Mars in a
show opening Sept. 19.
Liu is an artist with a very
special story. He came to the
United States from China in
1981 and he could not speak
any English. He graduated
from Westmar Co lege in
1985. H eventua ly obtained
a Master of Fine Arts, and has
b en a prolific artist for the 40
year since his graduation. He
cu rently resides in the Minneapolis/
St. Paul area, and is
returning to Le Mars for this
special show.

LE MARS — It’s not like they are not aware
of the dangers inherent in their work.
Iowa farmers take precautions and are
sensitive to the n ed to be careful, especia ly
at busy times like harvest, a cording to Iowa
State University Extension and Outreach field
agronomist Leah Ten Napel of Le Mars.
“I think many farmers are aware of safety
i sues an do their bes to mitigate those risks,
but accident sti l ha pen,” Ten Napel said.
She s es examples on a regular basis.
“Farmers take many steps to make the roads
safer by using safety reflective tape and signage
on their equipment. They also travel slowly
and travel during non-peak times of the day,”
Ten Napel said. “On the farm, many farmers
use safety equipment when entering bins, and
mov equipment around the farm with caution
when others are present.”
Sti l, it is by its very nature a dangerous line
of work. We have witne sed tragic examples
in the area in the past decade.
Gene Sitzma n, 5, of Le Mars, died in a
combine a cident while driving eastbound
on a gravel road on Oct. 17, 2014.
On July 21, 2020, Daniel Cronin, 65,
was ki led when he was tra ped in a
grain bin on his farm five miles east
of Le Mars.

Liu is an artist with a very
special story. He came to the
United States from China in
1981 and he could not speak
any English. He graduated
from Westmar Co lege in
1985. H eventua ly obtained
a Master of Fine Arts, and has
b en a prolific artist for the 40
year since his graduation. He
cu rently resides in the Minneapolis/
St. Paul area, and is
returning to Le Mars for this
special show.

LE MARS — It’s not like they are not aware
of the dangers inherent in their work.
Iowa farmers take precautions and are
sensitive to the n ed to be careful, especia ly
at busy times like harvest, a cording to Iowa
State University Extension and Outreach field
agronomist Leah Ten Napel of Le Mars.
“I think many farmers are aware of safety
i sues an do their bes to mitigate those risks,
but a cident sti l ha pen,” Ten Napel said.
She s es examples on a regular basis.
“Farmers take many steps to make the roads
safer by using safety reflective tape and signage
on their equipment. They also travel slowly
and travel during non-peak times of the day,”
Ten Napel said. “On the farm, many farmers
use safety equipment when entering bins, and
mov equipment around the farm with caution
when others are present.”
Sti l, it is by its very nature a dangerous line
of work. We have witne sed tragic examples
in the area in the past decade.
Gene Sitzma n, 5, of Le Mars, died in a
combine a cident while driving eastbound
on a gravel road on Oct. 17, 2014.
On July 21, 2020, Daniel Cronin, 65,
was ki led when he was tra ped in a
grain bin on his farm five miles east
of Le Mars.

Mars where he graduated
from college.
Kairong Liu brings his
work, “Forty Years After
Westmar,” to Le Mars in a
show opening Sept. 19.
Liu is an artist with a very
special story. He came to the
United States from China in
1981 and he could not speak
any English. He graduated
from Westmar College in
1985. He eventually obtained
a Master of Fine Arts, and has
been a prolific artist for the 40
years since his graduation. He
