feedback that the management team need to ensure that our programs and services align
with the needs and preferences of our members. This survey is designed to gather valuable
feedback on what matters most to you, whether it's specific events, resources, or areas of
improvement. By taking a few minutes to complete it, you contribute directly to the
decision-making process, helping us prioritize initiatives that enhance your experience and
Special Events
JENNA BRITTON, Special Events Director
We know planning events can be a bit overwhelming and time-consuming. To help
make things a bit easier, here’s a friendly guide with some dos and don’ts to keep
in mind for your future events.
Dos:
Plan Early: Get a jump start on organizing to secure your venue and key
vendors. The earlier, the better!
Choose the Right Venue: Pick a spot that fits your event’s size, theme, and
logistics. Like DGC of course!
Communicate Clearly: Keep the lines open with all vendors and participants to
ensure everyone’s on the same page.
Consider the Guest Experience: Make sure your guests are comfortable, have
easy access, and are entertained.
Prepare a Timeline: Craft a detailed schedule for the big day to keep
everything running smoothly, and do your best to stick to it!
Have a Backup Plan: Be ready for any hiccups with contingency plans for
weather, tech issues, and other unexpected surprises.
Personalize: Add those special touches that fit the theme or purpose of the
event. It’s the little details that make a big impact!
Don’ts:
Don’t Overlook Details: Small things can make a big difference. Don’t let minor
details slip through the cracks.
Don’t Forget to Confirm: Double-check all your bookings and arrangements
with vendors before the event.
Don’t Neglect Dietary Needs: Make sure to accommodate any special dietary
requirements and communicate these with your venue.
Don’t Disregard Guest Comfort: Ensure there’s plenty of seating and
refreshments so everyone feels at ease.
Hope these tips help you in your planning!
DARNELL RICHARDSON Executive Chef
Hello from the Chef’s Cutting Board,
Wow what a great and busy summer it has been here at the club,
so many fun events, tournaments, etc.
I want to take this opportunity to highlight two of our culinary
team members. Nate Rockwell our grill cook and Chris Lindsey our
sauté cook have been here for over a decade. Chris and Nate’s
dedication, commitment, and high-level performance add immense
value to the culinary team and our goal for member dining
experience. Chris and Nate are both talented, extremely reliable,
knowledgeable, and most importantly unmatched in consistency. I
would like to use the platform to acknowledge their performance
and contributions to the goals and values of DGC and the culinary
team.
Lastly, as summer draws to a close you’ll find me at Franklin Cider
Mill in the fall with a half dozen donuts in the greasy brown paper
bag and a pint of cider! For now, I have to run, soups on!
SAM MOYNIHAN Director of Agronomi
As we put an end to the dog days of summer, we look forward to one of the
most important times of the year for a golf course. Aeration season is upon us!
Why is aeration so important to continuing to improve golf course conditions?
Let’s look at a few reasons, firstly improving gas exchange in the root zone,
relieving compaction in the soil, reducing built-up thatch, and incorporating sand
into the soil profiles.
Gas exchange is important for soil health and turf health by allowing fresh
oxygen into the root zone to help improve respiration. Respiration in turf grass is
the process by which plants convert food into plant tissue, which is essential for
growth, repair, and reproduction. It's like how humans breathe, where plants burn
food to grow and develop.
Aeration also helps relieve compaction in the root zone by fracturing any built-up
hard pan soil conditions that may exist. Soil compaction can create turf
management problems caused by alterations in the physical properties of the soil
including decreases in total pore space, decreasing soil oxygen content,
reductions in water infiltration and percolation rates, increases in soil strength
and density, and increased water retention.
Thatch reduction is an important aspect of aeration. Thatch that has
accumulated to an excessive level is best reduced by mechanical means.
Dethatching machines known as vertical mowers, verticutters, dethatchers, or
power rakes have vertically spinning blades that pull some of the material to the
surface as they slice the thatch layer.
Sand incorporation into the soil profile during aeration helps relieve compaction,
dilute the thatch layer, and increase water infiltration and gas exchange. Sand
incorporation can be done in several ways including backfilling aeration holes or
verticutting lines. Another method is heavy topdressing applications and allowing
the grass to grow up through the sand.
Aeration practices set the playing surfaces up for each growing season to be able
to provide improved conditions year over year. A strong commitment to these
practices is what helps provide the turf with a better-growing environment and a
better playing experience for the membership.
