Hormones may run the show, but we can fight back 

Hormones act as chemical messengers and we 

all experience major fluctuations in the levels of 

androgens (a group of sex hormones) during times 

such as: 

- puberty 

- stress 

- pregnancy 

- menopause 

It is during these times, that excessive levels of 

androgens “switch on” stem cells in the skin - 

et voila, new unwanted hairs emerge! 

Unfortunately sufferers of a condition called Polycystic 

Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) can attest to this. Of those 

affected by this condition, approximately 70% 

experience unwanted hair growth on the face and 

chest. 

In short, knowing that we are able to permanently 

remove these troublesome hairs altogether is a 

powerful feeling, especially given the emotional 

and mental stress accompanied with constantly 

maintainance.

Hello & welcome! 

Can you believe it’s September already? Children 

are back to school after the long summer and we are 

entering the final quarter of 2024. 

One of my loyal advertisers passed away after a 

terrible accident recently and I had the privilege 

of attending the funeral online. Paul from Morse 

Funerals arranged this for those who couldn’t attend 

in person and it was a beautiful send off and I’m so 

pleased I had the chance to say goodbye. 

It made me reflect on my life after this and what 

more I can do, how I can help more people and be a 

better person. For those who don’t know I am also a 

pranic healer and offer help to those who are in pain 

physically, emotionally and psychologically. We can 

treat in person or distantly and for many conditions, 

it has helped me enormously. Reach out if you need 

help. 

Skydiving has been on my bucket list for years so 

a group of us including my youngest son and my 

partner are jumping out of plane on September

Open Day success 

raises £3000 for 

charity 

A.J. Dunlop Car Servicing Ltd held their 

14th Annual Open Day at their garage in 

Old Town, Beaconsfield. This year’s event 

supported the charity Give a Dog a Bone 

and a Pet a Home, with the Deputy Mayor, 

Councillor Lorna Shaw, officially opening 

the day. 

Despite starting with a typical English 

downpour, the event was well attended, 

and by midday, the music was playing and the 

food and bar were in full swing. Alex Dunlop 

expressed his delight at the overwhelming 

support from both customers and local 

residents, describing the atmosphere as 

fantastic. 

One of the highlights of the day was the 

impressive display of motor vehicles, ranging 

Deputy Mayor & Cllr Lorna Shaw with Alex Dunlop 

from a 1966 Mini Cooper to the very rare 

Jaguar XJ13. The event successfully raised 

£3,000 for the charity. 

Alex extended his gratitude to his dedicated 

staff for their hard work, especially in 

managing the food stalls, raffle, and lucky 

dip. He also thanked the car owners who 

generously allowed their vehicles to be 

showcased. Photos from the event and a list

Why regular 

eye tests are 

important 

Regular eye tests play a crucial role in 

monitoring early signs of eye conditions, 

such as cataracts or glaucoma before they 

become significant issues. 

Your eye health is essential to maintaining healthy 

vision but also offer a unique glimpse into your 

overall health. Many systemic conditions, such as 

diabetes, hypertension, raised cholesterol and even 

cardiovascular disease, can manifest symptoms or 

be seen in an eye test. Regular eye examinations can 

serve as an early warning system for these and other 

health issues. 

With time, our eyes may undergo changes. Regular 

eye tests for those over 40 are essential for monitoring 

and addressing age-related vision issues, including 

short-sightedness, longsightedness, astigmatism and 

presbyopia. Presbyopia is where the eyes ability to 

focus on nearer objects or small text changes and is 

easily resolved with the use of glasses or contact lenses. 

Eye diseases often develop gradually and can go 

unnoticed in their early stages. Conditions such 

as glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular 

degeneration can be asymptomatic until they reach 

advanced stages. 

Children eye check-ups are also important. As a 

child grows and develops, a significant portion of 

their learning is visually based. It is essential to be 

proactive about their eye health, as issues may not 

always be immediately apparent. Many vision 

problems in children, such as amblyopia (lazy eye) 

or strabismus (crossed eyes), can be effectively 

treated if detected early. 

By prioritising your eye health, and maintaining regular 

eye test appointments you are more likely to maintain 

clear vision and have a lifetime of healthy eyes.

How safe is your 

electrical installation? 

Do you need an EICR? Also known as an 

electrical installation condition report, 

they’re usually requested by landlords 

for their rental properties as this is a legal 

requirement since 2020. 

EICRs have to be carried out every 5 years 

for rental properties and if they come back 

unsatisfactory, the owner has 28 days to get the 

work completed or they face a fine from the 

council. 

We also carry out EICRs for owner-occupied 

clients if they’re buying a property, they might 

want to know more about the condition and 

safety of the electrical installation or once 

they move in and have plans to carry out 

work on the property. It’s recommended that 

owner-occupied homes are tested every 10 

years to ensure the continued safety of the 

installation. 

The average cost for an EICR for a 2 bed 

property is around £160 plus vat and this 

would be up to 10 circuits. For properties 

larger than this that may have more rooms 

and more consumer units (fuse boxes) the 

cost will rise.

industrial clients, from offices to warehouses 

to communal areas within blocks of flats. Get

What’s been happening at 

Beaconsfield Town Council? 

The new Mayor, Cllr Paul Mason has 

been attending events in the Town 

and getting to grips with chairing 

the council. In the autumn, his Civic 

Service will take place to officially 

recognise his Mayoral year. 

We had been looking forward to our 

Summer on the Green event, but 

unfortunately poor weather on the day 

meant we had to cancel. We hope to 

rearrange for Saturday 14th September 

2024. This will coincide with the final 

weekend of the Beaconsfield Community 

Festival so please look out for publicity and 

pray for good weather! 

Neighbourhood Plan Update 

Following the independent Examiner’s 

positive report, Buckinghamshire Council 

took the decision that Beaconsfield’s 

Neighbourhood Plan should go to 

Referendum and this will happen on 

Monday 9th September 2024 when all 

Beaconsfield residents will be able to vote.

Leaving Children 

Unattended – A Family 

Law Perspective 

In the last year, the NSPCC Helpline has 

seen a 65 per cent rise in calls from those 

raising concerns about children being left 

home alone. 

The increasing and unsustainable cost of childcare, 

together with expectations of a return to full-time 

office attendance has meant that parents are 

often leaving children at home for longer periods, 

particularly when those children are of secondary 

school age. 

The law on this point is arguably vague without the 

specification of a mandatory age threshold, and the 

decision left ultimately to the parents’ judgment. 

That said, the implications for getting it wrong are 

severe, with the risk of social services involvement 

and criminal prosecution if a child is exposed to 

‘unnecessary suffering or injury to health’. What the 

vagueness of the law does not take into account and

what the NSPCC data shows is that children, even 

those of secondary school age, are clearly feeling 

the lack of parental presence, supervision and 

support. In our experience as Family Lawyers, children 

have reported feelings of loneliness, lack of support 

with homework and revision and being left to fend 

for themselves at mealtimes. In addition, the risk of 

exposure to harm from third parties - older children 

or adults – whether physically in person (at home or 

in the community) or online cannot be understated, 

as the regular headlines regarding county lines and 

grooming starkly tell us. 

While it may be argued by parents that the 

circumstances are reasonable and justified, the 

effect and impact on children of even being 

left for briefer periods could be tantamount 

to neglect, with potential short and long-term 

consequences. 

In addition for separated parents, where there is 

continued animosity and conflict, leaving children 

unattended can often lead to further dispute. One 

parent could argue they would be willing and able 

to provide the additional support to the child or 

children, avoiding the associated risks of them 

being left alone and unsupervised – this only 

heightens tensions between the separated 

parents.

we see the return of Branch Manager, Jenna Arm 

and a newly appointed Deputy Branch Manager, 

Rachel Hoareau. Both Jenna and Rachel really 

thrive on giving customers the best experience 

whilst shopping in the branch with their Team 

and would really love to hear from our customers

Hope and Humanity in Action: A Look Inside 

the London and Slough Charitable Trust 

Founded in 1984, the London and Slough 

Charitable Trust has long been a lifeline 

for the homeless and those in need. 

What began as a small group commuting from 

Chalfont St. Peter and Slough into London it has 

grown into a vital operation. The charities’ “Souper 

Run” continues today, with volunteers traveling to 

Waterloo, Temple, and Embankment to distribute 

food, clothing, and toiletries. 

In 2014, the charity expanded to offer night 

shelters during winter, providing refuge to those 

experiencing homelessness. By 2020, the trust 

launched a food share program, repurposing 

surplus food from supermarkets to support local 

charities, schools, and churches, reaching up to 

200 people daily. 

At the heart of this effort is Nan Jacobson, an over 

80-year-old stalwart who leads the preparation 

of food packages every Monday at St. Joseph’s 

Church Hall in Chalfont St Peter. Alongside around 

85 unpaid volunteers, Nan ensures that up to 

200 parcels of food, clothing, and essentials are 

delivered each Monday to London’s homeless. 

A multi-faith, non-religious organization, the 

charity welcomes volunteers from all backgrounds, 

united by their shared goal of serving the 

community. For nearly 40 years, the London and 

Slough Charitable Trust has shown how small 

acts of kindness can create lasting change.

Visit the new mosaic trail in Beaconsfield 

New Town! Four new mosaics have been 

created to complement the mosaics 

created last year.

Beaconsfield library, 

the town council, the 

Royal Mail delivery 

building and Waitrose. 

Once again, the talented mosaicist Maud Milton 

has brought her expertise to Beaconsfield to 

enable more than 750 local people of all ages 

help make beautiful art works. Hundreds of 

individual clay tiles were printed and decorated 

at community workshops. These went on to 

be glazed and fired by Maud who placed them 

carefully into the finished mosaics. 

To help you find the mosaics, and to encourage 

you to keep fit, a trail map has been designed. 

See pages 30 and 31. This shows a short walk 

around interesting parts of the New Town where 

the mosaics are situated. The full trail leaflet is
