5 REASONS PROTEIN IS SO 

IMPORTANT 

Protein is essential for virtually 

every one of your cellular 

functions. Most people, when 

they think of protein, think of its 

role in building muscle. While 

this is true, there’s much more to 

protein than muscle. 

1. You need protein for the 

structure, metabolic function, 

and regulation of all your tissues 

and organs, not just muscle. Your 

bones, your ligaments, your 

tendons, your liver, your brain, 

skin, and fingernails are all built 

from protein. 

2. Every cell in your body 

contains enzymes, which are 

made of proteins, that determine 

how well your body functions, 

and, as a result, how well you 

feel. 

3. Protein is also important for 

neurotransmitters (eg. serotonin 

and dopamine) which are 

responsible for things like mood 

and sleep, as well as antibodies 

which are needed for robust 

immune health. 

4. Protein is critical for creating 

hormones such as insulin and 

thyroid hormones. 

5. And, yes, protein is key for 

helping prevent muscle loss. 

Muscle is the foundation of your 

metabolism, helping to regulate 

blood sugar and blood lipids. 

The stronger and healthier your 

muscles, the more carbohydrates 

and fat your body burns. In many 

ways, muscle is your metabolic 

superpower. Obesity, diabetes, 

heart disease and many other 

chronic health conditions often 

begin with inactive muscle and 

poor metabolism. 

PROTEIN & PERIMENOPAUSE 

During the perimenopausal 

years, oestrogen and progesterone 

– the hormones that regulate 

the menstrual cycle – begins 

to naturally decline. Women 

have hormone receptors all over 

their bodies, so they may feel 

the effects from their scalp, to 

their toes. Common symptoms 

include mood swings, hot flushes, 

night sweats, aching joints 

and insomnia. It’s the lesserdiscussed 

symptoms though – 

especially the psychological ones, 

such as anxiety, brain fog and 

forgetfulness – that really need 

more airtime. 

Switching up your diet at this 

stage in your life really can help: 

• Ensure you eat a balanced, 

protein-rich breakfast 

• Feed your gut with foods that 

are rich in good bacteria, 

such as fermented ingredients 

like kimchi and sauerkraut, 

and aim for around 30g of 

fibre a day, which is found in 

fruit and vegetables, brown 

rice, nuts, seeds and oats 

• Increase your protein intake – 


perimenopausal women should 

be looking at around 1.2 to 1.6 

grams of protein per kilogram 

of ideal body weight. Adding 

strength training exercises to 

your workouts helps build and 

maintain muscle too. 

• Add colour to your plate with 

different coloured plants, 

which are linked to higher 

levels of phytonutrients and 

have a variety of antioxidants. 

• Think about reducing your 

caffeine intake as caffeine 

can sometimes exacerbate 

symptoms of perimenopause 

such as anxiety and 

palpitations. My advice is to 

keep it to the mornings only. 

FIVE TAKE-HOME MESSAGES 

1. Add to your diet, don’t take 

away. Menopause is not a time to 

be restricting and feeling deprived, 

even if you are noticing changes in 

body composition and want to do 

something about managing your 

weight. Think about generous, 

hearty meals that harness the 

power of protein but still taste 

really good: ingredients such as 

lentils, yoghurt, eggs, edamame 

beans, cheese, salmon and tofu. 

2. Whether you choose to eat 

breakfast at 7am or 11am, your 

first meal is, in many ways, 

the most important. Try to eat 

something protein rich to really 

set your energy and mood for 

the rest of the day. We know that 

higher protein foods fill you up 

and banish cravings by down 

regulating the hunger hormone, 

ghrelin. Protein can also help 

stabilise blood glucose levels, 

staving off the dreaded post lunch 

slump and hangry irritability that 

often show up when we don’t eat 

nutritionally balanced meals. 

3. Mix up your sources so you get 

plenty of variety. Most of us know 

about animal protein but plant 

protein has additional benefits 

such as phytoestrogens (shown 

to help some women manage 

symptoms such as hot flushes) 

and shouldn’t be forgotten. Try a 

soya-based yoghurt such as The

seeds and a splash of soya milk, 

topped with berries and a drizzle 

of nut butter – delicious, fuss-free

4. Eating more protein can

also plays a role in keeping age 

related muscle loss (sarcopenia) 

at bay. But it isn’t just for fitness 

gains. Protein has benefits for 

everyone who wants to feel and 

live their best life. There are lots 

of confusing, not to mention 

conflicting, messages about 

how much protein you should 

be consuming. As a nice simple 

guide, think about a palm or first 

sized portion with every meal. 

5. The beauty of plant protein is 

that it goes beyond just protein! 

It contains fibre, vitamins, 

minerals and phytonutrients, plus 

is generally low in saturated fat 

and cholesterol. Think legumes 

(beans, peas, lentils), soya 

products (yoghurt, tofu, tempeh, 

edamame beans), grains (quinoa, 

freekeh) and nuts and seeds. Some 

plant proteins such as soya have 

been linked with lower levels of 

cardiovascular disease and may 

even protect against some forms of 

cancer, so it really is an ingredient 

worth watching.

Preneur World chats to British actress Jenna 

Coleman about her latest role as Ember Manning 

in the BBC detective thriller The Jetty

Jenna Coleman, the versatile and acclaimed 

British actress, has captivated audiences 

with her dynamic performances across 

television and film. She first gained 

recognition for her role as Jasmine 

Thomas in the popular British soap opera 

Emmerdale. Her career skyrocketed when 

she portrayed Clara Oswald, the beloved 

companion in the iconic BBC series Doctor 

Who. Jenna’s portrayal of Queen Victoria 

in the ITV period drama Victoria further 

solidified her status as a leading actress. 

In addition to her television success, 

Jenna has made notable film appearances, 

including a role in Captain America: The 

First Avenger. 

She has also showcased her versatility on 

stage, starring in productions like All My 

Sons. 

In her latest role, Jenna has taken on a new 

challenge as Detective Ember Manning 

in the BBC’s gripping crime drama The 

Jetty. Her latest role promises to be another

Please tell us more about your latest 

role as Detective Ember Manning in 

the BBC drama The Jetty? 

The Jetty is a story about Ember 

J Manning, a mum who becomes 

a detective. She’s investigating a 

case which becomes very personal to 

her. It’s a very character, human and 

relationship-driven drama that’s wrapped 

up as a detective thriller. There are a lot of 

elements and various threads to this story, 

but the heart of it is about the missing case 

of Amy Knightley and the case of Miranda 

Ashby. More crucially, it asks probing 

questions about identity, sexual boundaries, 

sexual politics, toxic culture and the 

awakening of oneself. 

P 

How would you describe Ember? What 

is she going through in the series? 

Ember is quite prickly, stubborn, 

J proud and free-willed. She’s also very 

warm and loyal. And I also think she’s 

really funny. Cat Jones’ writing of her is 

very sardonic, dry, and she’s not easily 

impressed. In the series she’s going through 

an awakening and really finding herself. 

Her husband, who she was with from a very 

young age, died a year before the series 

starts, so she’s going through this new kind 

of re-discovering of herself. 

P 

What journey does Ember go on across 

the series? 

Throughout the series, Ember is really 

J propelled forward towards the truth, 

towards the answers, towards the case. 

But as she’s moving forward trying to solve 

the case, her past is always catching up with 

her. The more she unravels of the case, the 

more she has to re-examine and re-define 

her own past, and in doing so her own past 

relationships and her own identity. 

P 

Can you describe the key relationships 

your character has in the show? 

Ember has a great relationship with 

J her daughter Hannah, played by 

Ruby Stokes, that we tried to create 

as a bit of a sisterly friendship. Ember had 

her daughter when she was a teenager, so 

they’re not too far apart in age and there’s 

a lovely, really interesting dynamic there. 

Her relationship with her side-kick Hitch, 

played by Archie Renaux, is really fun. I 

loved filming those scenes with him. She’s 

quite challenging of Hitch and calls him 

out all the time, so there’s this constant 

banter and back-and-forth between them. 

Ember gives him a lot of tough love. Her 

relationship with her deceased husband is 

interesting, and a key focus of the show, 

as Ember spends the series reframing her 

relationship with him, putting a new lens on 

it in retrospect.

What are The Jetty’s main themes and 

how are they linked to the locations in 

the show? 

There’s a really interesting visual 

J theme across the series of reflections 

and mirrors, which reflects the fact 

that so much of Ember’s journey is being 

forced to look inward. So much of the show 

is about water and echoes, memories and 

reflection. The themes of the show are 

really echoed by the setting of the lake.

independent shooting school. We

don’t buy based 

on looks 

STEP 1: PREPARATION 

Preparation is key. First off, 

make sure you have all your 

appropriate kit with you 

including hearing protection and 

shooting glasses. You don’t have 

to invest in fancy, expensive gear 

in the beginning if you’re unsure 

if it will be the sport for you, but 

it is imperative to have the basic 

safety equipment. 

Another prep factor, to be a good 

shooter, you must put in the hours 

with an instructor to practice 

your technique, regardless of 

what level you’re at. 

This will help you feel confident 

under different pressures and 

scenarios and help you learn 

to stay calm, regardless of how 

you’re performing.

provide. Tailored tuition designed 

to match each individual ability 

and help you to develop style and 

confidence, whether your interest 

is in game or clays. 

STEP 2: TECHNIQUE 

Confidence again, plays a huge 

part to your technique and skill 

level. Being familiar with your 

kit and its performance capability 

will help you feel confident 

overall. 

Staying calm and under control 

is the best quality to adopt when 

shooting. Concentrate on the 

target 110%. 

When shooting high pheasants 

watch the birds coming across 

the line. They are probably higher 

than you think looking at the 

birds over your peg, and they 

may well be sliding on the wind. 

Time spent on reconnaissance is 

seldom wasted. 

Don’t rush your gun mount, get 

your timing right and finish the 

shot with hard focus on the bird 

as it drops. 

STEP 3: RESPONSIBLE 

SHOOTING 

Safety should always be the first 

and last thing to think about 

when shooting. Be muzzle aware 

at all times, this includes taking 

the gun out of the slip and putting 

it back in. I always suggest also 

using a security cable for your 

gun when travelling. 

Safe shooting is no accident. 

When shooting pheasant and 

partridge, if there is no sky 

behind it don’t take the shot. If it 

feels wrong it probably is, so wait 

for the next option to fly over. No 

one is interested particularly in 

what you shoot only that you are 

safe. 

STEP 4: SELECTING THE 

RIGHT GUN FOR YOU 

At West London Shooting 

School, we will select a gun with 

you that is suitable in terms of 

comfort and fit to get you started 

initially. This will undoubtedly 

change as you progress and you 

decide which aspects of shooting 

you are interested in - clays, 

game or competition shooting. 

The important element at the 


start is to use a gun that fits 

and gives you confidence. 

To give an extreme example 

there is no point starting 

a novice interested in 

competition shooting with 

a gun with 32” barrels and 

weighing 8 ½ lb when they 

haven’t got the upper body 

strength to hold and move the 

gun effectively. 

When purchasing, it is 

important that you buy a gun 

that is suitable for the type 

of shooting that you intend 

to undertake and that you 

have it fitted. A proper fitting 

involves the use of a try gun 

where the length, drop and 

cast can be properly evaluated 

to ensure that your new gun 

fits you and is comfortable to 

shoot (this is something we 

offer at our school). 

Bling doesn’t shoot better, so 

don’t buy based on looks. You 

can have the most expensive 

gun there is but if it doesn’t 

fit, you will be missing with 

style too many times. 

STEP 5: GUN CARE TIPS 

FOR OPTIMUM USE 

1. Make sure the gun is 

ready for action with a little 

lubrication before shooting - 

a few drops of strategically 

placed oil or the slightest 

smear of gun grease will 

prevent wear on key parts. 

2. Clean your gun twice after 

it gets wet on a shoot day, 

once after shooting and again 

the following day. A gun can 

rust overnight if left wet. 

3. Have your gun checked over 

periodically by a gunsmith, 

with a strip, clean and service. 

How often depends on how 

much shooting you do. An 

old English gun needs regular 

fettling to keep it up to the 

mark. 

4. Make sure your gun safe is 

sited in a warm, dry part of 

the house.

shares her top tips for travelling with children 

and adjusting them to a new time zone 

Travelling as a family is very 

different from travelling without 

kids and it can be stressful 

and sometimes all feel a little 

overwhelming, 

NAPTIME IN TRANSIT 

On your travel days do your best 

with naps but don’t put too much 

pressure on yourself. Naps on the 

go aren’t as restorative as naps 

in a cot, however, any sleep is a 

bonus and if naps are short just 

try to fit in more of them. Take 

options for naps, baby carriers, 

a pram, your car seat, they may 

even sleep in the car for some 

of the journey (just remember 

babies need frequent breaks from 

their car seat to stretch and move 

around).. Try to use your little 

one’s wake window to get them 

back to sleep before they get 

overtired. This will help them 

to drift off more easily as an 

overtired baby can fight sleep. 

FLYING WITH KIDS 

If you are taking a flight, 

make sure you take lots of 

entertainment with you for their 

day time entertainment and take 

some familiar bedtime items 

too. Such as a favourite blanket, 

bedtime story and cuddly toy. 

This will help signal to your child 

that bedtime is on its way even 

though you are on a plane. 

When booking a flight, if possible 

try to time the flight with a nap 

or bedtime. If you have booked a 

night flight, change your little one 

into their pyjamas or nighttime 

sleep suit before the flight and 

see if you can book an airline 

bassinet at the time of booking 

your flights. These are typically 

installed in the bulkhead of the 

plane and so there are limited 

numbers available (check your 

baby’s weight for whether these 

are appropriate). 

ADJUST TO NEW TIME ZONES 

Once you arrive try to get your 

baby or toddler onto the new 

time zone straight away. There 

are some amazing European 

destinations that mean you don’t 

need to adjust time zones whilst 

others require just an hour or so. 

Equally if you are only going on 

a short trip it may not be worth 

adjusting their time zone at all. 

If you are dealing with a bigger 

shift in time zones then starting 

to shift time zones ahead of time, 

out them to bed an hour earlier or 

later the night before travelling 

depending on your direction 

of travel. This could massively 

help you when you get to your 

destination. Again, once you 

arrive, shift to local time straight 

away. If bedtime is usually 7pm 

try and get your little one into bed 

by 7pm local time. 

To help with their circadian 

rhythm try and expose them to 

being outside in the light. This 

doesn’t need to be direct sunlight 

but having time outside during 

the day will help them adjust. 

When you arrive try to make 

your little ones’ sleep space as 

conducive to sleep as you can. 

You could pack a travel black 

out blind for the window in case 

the room is too light. A mobile 

white noise machine is also very 

helpful to stop them from getting 

disturbed unnecessarily. Keep 

an eye on the room temperature 

too and where possible keep it 

nice and cool. Young babies, in 

particular, can overheat easily. 

It is important that you also get 

to relax on holiday. Do your best 

with your little ones’ sleep but 

don’t stress about it. Being aware 

of the sleep they are getting 

and giving them a good sleep 

environment will massively help.

WHAT IS SOCIAL & 

EMOTIONAL LITERACY? 

Social and emotional literacy 

refers to the way in which we 

form and maintain positive 

relationships, understand our own 

and other’s emotions, demonstrate 

empathy, achieve our goals and 

make responsible decisions. 

As children develop, they draw 

on play to understand themselves, 

others and the world around them. 

Play provides children with a 

fundamental platform to explore 

their emotions, and try-out their 

experiences through storytelling, 

symbolic and imaginative play. 

A key step in building children’s 

emotional literacy is identifying 

their own and others’ emotions. 

Naming the emotion and labelling 

the physical experience associated 

- for example, “when my heart is 

racing, my stomach is churning 

and my palms are sweaty, I feel 

nervous” - can significantly 

reduce the emotional intensity. 

A brilliant way to remember this 

concept is, “name it to tame it”. 

This approach helps children to 

recognise and understand their 

emotions rather than suppress 

them or be seen as something that 

is discouraged. When all emotions 

are OK, children are more likely 

to express themselves in healthy 

ways, meaning they are less likely 

to be overwhelmed, and have a 


greater sense of control over their behaviour. 

If we think about early school-aged children, this is a 

period of significant brain development, which makes 

learning these competencies an opportune time to 

support their future success. 

MENTAL, EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL HEALTH

right for every child by the United Nations Human

This might mean observing what’s happening in the 

scenario, for example, “I see you both want to play 

with the lion at the same time, I wonder what you 

could do so that it works out for you both? 

6. All children are unique, have individual strengths, 

and learning through play occurs in many different 

ways, so it’s important to let children be the leaders 

of their play.

when she was just 23 years old. 

Honeysuckle is this fantastic 

intricate interplay of wooden 

stems, with small curling leaves 

and honeysuckle flowers in full 

bloom. The design has been 

one of the most popular Morris 

& Co. designs from when she 

designed it in 1883, but it has 

been frequently misattributed to 

her father. But it’s now correctly 

established at her own work, so 

it’s been exciting working on this 

design, since appraisal for her 

work is long overdue.”

Designed by J.H. Dearle, a 

towering figure in Morris & Co.’s 

history, this floral masterpiece

The launch event was a resounding success, with

document called a Bailment 

Contract confirming that the cask 

ownership has been transferred to 

them, rather than the broker, this 

includes a Unique Cask Number, a 

Delivery Order, and the signatures 

of both parties. This common 

law agreement certifies that the 

investor is now the legal owner of 

the cask.

Once an investor has fulfilled 

their investment timeline and it’s 

the right time to sell or exit the

options available, including selling

about? 

Cooking Buddies is a really fun 

B cooking show, where I teach some 

new friends my tasty recipes (usually 

so they can cook them for someone special 

or a special occasion) and they teach me 

something they’re super good at. I guess 

you could call it a skills swap. It’s been 

amazing to give all kinds of new things a 

try, I had a go at things like karate, BMX 

racing, street art and boxing – lots of stuff 

I’ve never tried before. It’s been so much 

fun, even when I’ve not been very good at 

something!

What skills did you learn? And are 

you sticking with any of them? 

I learnt some cool fitness skills from 

B trying boxing, including skipping, 

which is a lot harder than I thought it 

would be! Ice skating is also really good 

fun.

Did you make any good friendships 

on set with your guests and the crew? 

Yes, I made friends with all the kids 

B on set – they were really nice and it 

was a great opportunity to learn some 

of their skills. I also became great friends 

with Rob, the sound man, because he’s a 

legend.

How did making Cooking Buddies 

differ from filming you’ve done 

before? 

There were lots more people around 

B and there were much bigger cameras, 

we usually just use phones, so it’s all 

a bit simpler. Making the TV show was 

epic – it was really fun to learn some cool 

new skills from other kids, but also to teach 

them dishes that they can share with their 

friends.

What was your favourite recipe to 

show someone? 

I’d have to say that any type of 

B pasta, because it’s so simple, but so 

delicious! And you can’t beat a fully 

loaded fish finger sarnie either.
