COMMUNITY NEWS
The sun always
shines at Sunny
Corner!
Sunny Corner, located on the banks
of the Truro River near Malpas, offers
one of the few flat walks in the city,
allowing for a scenic route from the
Truro Cathedral without any uphill
climbs. This site, steeped in history,
was notably mentioned by Queen
Victoria in her 1846 diary, describing
a warm reception by the locals as she
visited the area.
The site has been in use for over a century,
with the earliest images showing Truro
Swimming Club using it as their base from
the 1930s to the 1950s. However, by 2016,
it had fallen into disrepair, prompting local
community worker Paul Caruana (photo: Top
left back row) to spearhead its renovation.
Despite the challenges of coordinating with
four different authorities, Paul and a group of
volunteers, later forming the Friends of Sunny
Corner Group.
Since the renovation began, the group has
earned significant recognition, including
annual “Outstanding” awards from the
Royal Horticultural Society’s “It’s Your
Neighbourhood” scheme and the Queen’s
Award for Voluntary Service in 2021.
the site. Contributions from passersby also
support their efforts.
Volunteers like Julie Evans and Ron Graham
find joy and community in their work,
ensuring Sunny Corner remains a beloved
spot for locals and visitors alike. The ongoing
dedication of Paul and his team promises a
bright future for this cherished location.
The transformation included clearing
overgrown areas, unearthing old walls, and
installing new amenities like benches, picnic
tables, and accessible paths. A major rock fall in
early 2021 led to the creation of a new seating
area and a “Wild Patch” for natural growth.
Puppy love
for Nick
Everyone knows Nick Cuthbert. He has
been selling the Big Issue for about
twenty years and stands in front of
Marks & Spencer every week day. About
seven months ago, he sadly lost his
trusted companion, Bryony, a chocolate
brown Labrador.
He has been raising funds for, Last Chance
Hotel, a charity that rescues dogs and gives
them a sanctuary for a better life.To date he
and his customers have raised over £1108.
He was hoping to acquire a puppy from the
charity however another puppy came up
privately and through very generous customer
donations, Nick was able to purchase Bracken.
He couldn’t bring himself to get a chocolate
Nick - seller of Big Issue and new puppy, Bracken
labrador so he opted for a black one instead.
He wanted to thank all the friends and
customers for donating. I am sure you agree
that Bracken is adorable!
News from
Truro BID
Truro BID delivers events, projects
and services for Truro, Truro’s
businesses and everyone working in
the city centre. They are business led
& not for profit.
We hope that you have enjoyed the summer and
are getting ready for the autumn. To help make
Truro a more attractive destination for residents
and visitors, we organise and support events
throughout the year.
In July, we were delighted to bring Children’s
Day to Truro for the seventh year. Families
enjoyed lots of mostly free entertainment and
activities including mountain bike stunt shows,
dance performances and have a-go sessions.
Some of Truro’s shops and eateries joined in with
family friendly in-store activities and offers.
We have been continuing to support the monthly
BIG Truro Market, by lending out our colourful
gazebos to Cornwall Shop Small. The market,
which is a collaboration by Truro Farmers Market
and Cornwall Shop Small, helps generate footfall
that will benefit many other resident businesses.
As well as organising events, we provide services
for Truro and Truro’s businesses and since April
2023 we have arranged and funded a security
resource for the city. In July the Truro Rangers
security patrols, who you’ll probably have seen
On Sunday 28 July, we held the second Truro
Classic Car Show, which was a larger event than
last year with vintage vehicles on Lemon Quay,
Lemon Street and Boscawen St. It was a rare
opportunity to see a wide variety of cherished
classic and vintage vehicles in a city centre
location.
We were delighted with the visitor attendance for
both events, which were sponsored by Coodes
Solicitors.
festive markets, we are working with Cornwall
Shop Small and Truro Farmers Market to
bring the Boscawen Street Market to Truro on
Wednesdays and Saturdays from 23rd November.
around the city wearing red utility vests, were
awarded Community Safety Accreditation Scheme
(CSAS) powers. This means the Truro Rangers can
now stop individuals and take down names and
addresses of those related to anti-social behaviour
incidents to identify offenders which can then be
handed on to the police.
It may feel early to talk about Christmas however
our small Truro BID team have been busy planning
festivities for 2024 and it won’t be long before
businesses in Truro must plan their staff rotas.
We will bringing back Festive Friday on 22nd
November, featuring Truro’s Christmas Lights
Switch-on and live music once the lights have been
switched on at 7pm.
On the same day, the Truro Christmas Market will
be back on Lemon Quay for the festive period. The
market which showcases local arts, crafts, food
and drink in festive wooden cabins is hosted by
Truro Farmers Market and Cornwall Event Cabins.
To celebrate the first late night shopping
evening on Wednesday 27th November, we
are organising the Father Christmas Parade.
This will feature Father Christmas and his sleigh,
community groups, musicians, and circus
performers.
For full details of all the Christmas events in the
city head to www.visittruro.org.uk, the Official
On behalf of Truro’s businesses, please continue
to support our cities shops, eateries, and service
businesses throughout the autumn and over the
festive period as much as you can.
Free Blood
Pressure Check
at Truro Pharmacy
in Tescos Store
If you’re over 40 and not currently
on blood pressure medication, take
advantage of a new government
initiative offering free blood pressure
checks at Truro pharmacy in Tescos. This
service, provided in conjunction with
your local GP, is quick and convenient,
taking no more than 10 minutes.
Regardless of age, any adult can visit the
pharmacy at Tescos for a free blood pressure
test. Try and pick a time where it is not busy! If
your results indicate high blood pressure, the
pharmacist may offer you a 24-hour blood
Askel Grohen
As we enter Autumn and the nights
begin to draw in, a mammal to watch
out for as the sun is setting are bats.
In Cornish, bats are called ‘Askel Grohen’
which literally translates to leather wing, a
fairly suited description of this small flying
mammal. There are 17 species of bats known
to breed in the UK, 12 of which are known to
breed in Cornwall, and worldwide there are
over 1400 species of bat with more still being
discovered!
All bats in the UK eat insects and each species
hunts in its own way. Bats will eat on the
wing (unless they’ve caught a large insect) as
they need to eat a lot of insects to keep their
energy up, a common pipistrelle can eat over
3000 insects in one night! While bats are not
blind, they rely on their hearing for hunting.
Bats will produce clicking noises and when
the sound hits off a surface it travels back to
the bat who can then build a picture of its
pressure monitor to
wear. This device will
measure your blood
pressure every half hour
during the day and
hourly at night, with
the results also sent
to your GP.
Don’t miss this great opportunity to check
your blood pressure - especially since it’s free!
For more information, scan the QR code.
surroundings, both
structures around
it and prey flying
nearby. This is
called echolocation.
As a bat closes in
on its prey the
clicks become more
frequent as the
sound doesn’t have
as far to travel and
it helps to provide the most up to date
location of the insect. We can hear some
of these clicks if a bat is flying overhead in
a quiet area, but the best way to hear them
hunting, and ID the type of bat, is using a
bat detector.
Our team runs bat walks with the Friends of
Coosebean and Friends of Daubuz, where we
bring along bat detectors for attendees to
try as we walk along routes that often have
bats flying around. Keep an eye out for
Facebook events and posters to see when we
are running these events and come along to
learn a bit more about Askel Grohen!
Rainbows visit
Falmouth Lifeboat
Station
During the summer term, sixty young
members from Truro Methodist
Rainbows completed the Girlguiding
South West England ‘Mayday Mayday’
Challenge.
Girls learned about four key water safety
messages– stop and think, stay together,
FLOAT, call 999 or 112 in an emergency – so
they can be safe and have fun in and around
water; celebrated the past, present, and future
of the RNLI; raised £500 with a ‘Mayday Mile’
fundraising event; and earned a special badge
to mark the 200th anniversary of the RNLI.
The highlight of this ‘Mayday Mayday’
Challenge was their exciting tour of
Falmouth Lifeboat Station, kindly arranged
by volunteer teams. Rainbows were divided
into small groups to be taken aboard the
Severn class all-weather lifeboat and into the
wheel house, be shown round the B class
Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat, and see the crew
kit ready for a ‘shout’. All the girls were really
interested and asked lots of questions. When
the Friday Rainbow Unit visited, both lifeboats
were out on a major rescue in Falmouth Bay,
which was a reminder of the importantand
dangerous lifesaving work of the RNLI. The
volunteer lifeboat crews practise regularly,
so they are ready to go out to sea whenever
there is an emergency.
All Girlguiding Leaders are trained volunteers,
who happily give their time to help all girls
know they can do anything. Leaders find it
such an enjoyable and rewarding way to
volunteer. Additional volunteers are needed
so Rainbows (aged 4-7), Brownies (7-10),
Guides (10-14), and Rangers (14-18) can
continue to experience the fun of exciting
weekly meetings plus amazing challenges
and adventures. Please register your interest
https://www.girlguiding.org.uk/get-involved/
become-a-volunteer/ or contact Tina & Claire
(Division Commissioners) on carricknorth@
girlguidingcornwall.org.uk for an informal chat.
There are lots of fun and flexible ways to get
involved in Girlguiding. Whatever your skills
and interests, whether it is volunteering with
girls directly or supporting behind the scenes,
there is a role to suit you.
Citizens Advice
Cornwall Hidden
Homeless Project
Citizens Advice Cornwall and the
University of Plymouth are carrying out
new research into the issues of Hidden
Homelessness in Cornwall and we need
your help.
Our advisers are seeing increasing numbers
of people who may not consider themselves
homeless but are trapped in precarious
situations or just unable to move on with
their loves because of the lack of affordable
homes to rent or buy.
While much attention is rightly focussed on
people who are living rough on the streets,
we’re also concerned about people whose
situations might force them into hostels or
actual homelessness.
We’re looking for people in Cornwall to take
part in our short anonymous online survey at
citizensadvicecornwall.org.uk
We want to hear your stories and opinions -
you can also fill out the form for other people
you know. We particularly want to hear from
people who are:
• Sofa surfing (sleeping on friend’s sofas and
spare rooms)
• Living in overcrowded accommodation and
unable to afford to move out
• Living with someone where the relationship
has broken down, but neither person can
move out
• Living as an adult with parents where this
is causing a problem, for example friction in
relations, problems with sharing living space
and financial arguments.
We’re also looking for some people who
might be prepared to speak to a researcher
about their experiences. If you’re willing
to take part in an interview, please
contact Citizens Advice Cornwall’s
Communications Officer, Wailim Wong, at
THE YOUNG JOURNALIST
The Bright Side
Of Social Media
Despite the misuse and dangers that come
with the ever evolving social media, it is
critical not to entirely discard the positive
influence it can have.
One effect of the wide use and availability of
social media platforms is how it can be used to
teach, allowing learning that is accessible.
One example of this is youtube, which allows
a range of obtainable information for free for
all ages. Youtube has a variety of information
from step by step cooking tutorials, to how to
perfect calligraphy skills. Of course, social media
such as youtube and tiktok, enables support
for struggling individuals such as those facing
exams, they can find resources for revision,
tutoring, and a community of those in their
same situation.
These connections able to be formed via social
media are key to how social media platforms
can have an increasingly beneficial influence.
The University of Portsmouth has outlined the
benefits of using networking on social media, as
well as Guideposts trust, ensuring it is a tool for
the better when not misused.
Linkedin in particular is a useful tool to those
looking to build a network of connections most
relevant to them and their career. In 2024 alone,
Linkedin hires 25.6 people every minute via their
platform, suggesting how functional it can be
to job searches. Facebook is similar to Linkedin
in how it enables business, but Facebook has
a greater use as a tool for connecting people
and allowing for communities to come together
openly with similar interests or situations.
A similar factor of social media involving
its users is its ability to create and provide
awareness on many issues. By providing a
platform for individuals and larger movements
to actively spread information and successfully
gain a large audience in a minimal amount of
time, social media can be a helpful device to
people of all ages who want to expand their
knowledge on social issues.
To conclude, social media can absolutely be
a force for good and we should use it as such,
social media is only negative when its abilities
are abused by the user. It is important to
recognise the potential behind social media
platforms to encourage us to take advantage
of the benefits rather than focus on the
negative side, particularly for the newest
generations who have increasingly more
available to social media due to its accessibility
on practically all forms of technology.
When using social media, it is vital to have
understood how it can be dangerous or
misused, in order to move forward safely
and make the most use out of it.
Offshore wind in
the UK
Offshore wind in the UK comes with many
challenges such as supply chain bottlenecks,
difficult maintenance coupled with harsh
marine environments and contracts for
difference pricing. However, as the UK
creeps closer to the net zero by 2050 goal,
the government, businesses and other
players are continuing to move forwards
towards improving offshore wind in the UK.
The largest capacity offshore wind farm in the
UK , called Dogger Bank 130 km off of the
Yorkshire coast, was installed in 2023, using the
Haliade-X 13MW turbine which is the 2nd most
powerful commercially deployed wind turbine
in the world. While this particular wind farm is
fixed to the seabed, floating offshore is on the
rise with a target of 5-10% of the total offshore
turbines being floating. The benefits of floating
offshore are potentially significant, though
at this stage unproven, easier and cheaper
installation and maintenance due to the
moveability of turbines from land to water and
vice versa. Furthermore, there is higher access
to areas such as deeper water (typically greater
than 60m) where structures cannot be built and
lower environmental impact. Consolidation can
be expected in coming years as companies
discover the most cost-efficient ways of
implementing floating devices and further
advancements are made.
As previously mentioned, the contract for
different pricing can significantly impact
offshore wind development as it affects the
amount the government will contribute to
projects. This was increased by 66% under the
2022 to 2024 Conservative government and
should allow for more offshore projects to
be installed with more advanced technology
and higher capacities. It is noted that
offshore projects can acquire more funding
if they can reduce their carbon footprint
and demonstrate positive social impact on
communities, thus providing another way for
contractors to increase funding.
As of current capacity the UK can supply 13.9
GW offshore wind into the grid, a fourfold
increase since 2012, with 77 GW of potential
capacity in the project pipeline. This highlights
the promising progress of development and
innovation in UK offshore (1 GW can supply
energy for approximately 700,000 homes!).
To conclude, the UK is heading in a positive
direction with its floating offshore and in
coming years we will be seeing more
sites similar to Dogger Bank coming into
commercial use, moving us closer to the
net zero by 2050 target.
Park Yoga success!
Park Yoga is a charity that was founded
in 2017, with the mission to encourage
people to step outdoors and engage
with their local green spaces, move,
breathe and find community to improve
overall wellbeing. There are now over 40
free yoga sessions which run throughout
England at the same time on a Sunday
morning via Park Yoga.
Kimi has been leading
the Park Yoga sessions
in Boscawen Park, Truro
this summer, where it
has launched for the
first time with an
astounding response.
She believes greatly in
the power of community
and connection, and
felt strongly that it was important for sessions to
be offered for free, and for them to be open to all.
Kimi has over 300 hours of teacher training
experience, of which she gained in India. It
felt important to her to travel to the birthplace of
yoga to complete her studies, and she has felt
called to share the magic of yoga with her local
community.
There has been much isolation in the last 5
years, many people have suffered, feeling
disconnected and alone. Connection via
community is fundamental in improving the support,
encouragement (and so collective wellness) of our city.
The Park Yoga sessions really are for everyone, you
can join just by coming along and sitting with the
group. We breathe, we move, we cultivate a sense
of presence and kapow - we are doing yoga!
Sessions run until the 15th of September. We then
break for Winter. By attending these sessions,
some will seek out other local (perhaps donation
based) sessions, or meet up with friends and
continue this practice in smaller local groups.
Practicing yoga isn’t always something that is
done on a mat.
You can meet Kimi at Pollen cafe as she owns and
runs this in Victoria Gardens.
Wadebridge ladies
win Cornwall softball
cricket finals again
The Wadebridge Ladies’ softball cricket team
triumphed at the Cornwall Ladies Softball
Cricket Finals for the second consecutive
year. The event, held at St Austell Cricket
Club, brought together the top four teams:
Wadebridge, St Minver, Paul, and Penzance.
In the semi-finals, Wadebridge narrowly defeated
Penzance in a tense match, reclaiming the lead
with a wicket in the final over. Paul edged past St
Minver by seven runs, setting up an exciting final
against Wadebridge.
The final was a thrilling contest. Wadebridge
posted 295-4 from 16 overs, with steady scoring
and quick running between wickets. Paul’s chase
started strong, but Wadebridge’s spirited fielding
and tight bowling turned the game around.
With 21 runs needed from the last four overs,
Wadebridge’s defence held firm, securing a
20-run (net score) victory.
Women and Girls Development Lead Nick
competition has been fantastic, with great
spirit and high standards of cricket. The future
of Ladies Cricket in Cornwall is bright!”
Gratitude
This is a simple daily exercise. Find 3
things to be grateful for. It could be
easy as saying, “I am grateful for the sun
shining today” or “Thank you for the
beautiful scenery that I can see with my
eyes” or “Thank you for the bits of my
body that are well - thank you”.
When things become difficult it is easy to sink
into a hole of despair but by peeling away
the negativity and finding a few things to be
grateful for, life doesn’t seem quite as bad.
If you would like to share some interesting
things to be grateful for please send them
to me. Here are some of the things I’d like to
share with you.
My spiritual
teachers and
guides
It’s only in the last
few years that I’ve
become more
spiritual. It’s
wonderful to feel
more connected
with my soul. I am grateful for having
guidance and teachings so I can grow and
evolve. Please help me to remain humble,
objective and have good self esteem.
To the sun
It may not always shine but it is shining above
the clouds or in another time zone. Without
the sun nothing would survive. Thank you for
shining on me and in my heart.
Thank you to
Family and friends
Thank you to all my family and friends who
support me in their own different ways. A
special thank you to my wonderful partner
who takes a lot of the flack. I will try harder to
be more balanced emotionally and supportive
My physical
body
I am grateful that
my body works in
a way that allows
me to do the
things I want
to do. I will
appreciate and
look after my body better by eating more
healthily, and doing regular exercise. I will
learn to show forgiveness to the bits of my
body that sometimes do not perform in the
way I would like. I forgive you.
