Welcome to the inaugural issue of Gerrards Cross and 

Chalfonts Together! I’m thrilled to introduce this new 

printed magazine to our wonderful community. Having 

lived here for many years, I truly appreciate the strong 

sense of togetherness that defines Gerrards Cross and 

the Chalfonts. 

This area is home to incredible community champions 

who quietly dedicate their time to fundraising and 

helping others. If you know of any local causes or 

individuals making a difference, I’d love to hear from 

you (see pages 14 and 23). For instance, Malcolm, a 

CSP resident, has been cooking and delivering meals 

to the homeless in South London for over 15 years. 

As schools reopen, don’t miss our guide to local school 

open days on page 12, a helpful resource if you’re 

making decisions for your children’s education. 

Also, the Calcot Centre is hosting a special well-being 

day (see page 16), and Bekonscot Model Railway has 

generously donated a family ticket for our autumn 

competition (page 23).

Meet the new 

Community 

Champion at Tescos 

Anabell Pelling 

As a Community Champion, Anabell’s 

job is to help and support the local 

community in any way possible. 

These ways include helping local schools, 

groups, and charities to access Tesco’s 

Community programmes and providing 

the essential support that they need. 

The support that Tesco’s gives these 

organisations will enable them to keep 

on running and giving essential things 

like education to our community. She also 

engages with the community and customers 

in store she has a Community board in store 

that showcases how the store is helping 

and how it can help the local community. 

This is especially important as it shows the 

community how Tesco is here to help and 

support them. 

In her work as a Community Champion, she 

aims to promote the local High Street and 

what it’s got to offer through the community 

board which will hopefully bring customers 

onto the High Street while they’re in Gerrards 

Cross. She is going to spend time with the 

local charities to find out what they do and 

see if there’s any way that Tesco’s can assist 

further. That will also show her the impact 

these charities have on people’s lives and 

what impact it would have on the community 

if they weren’t able to run anymore.

Why regular 

eye tests are 

important 

Regular eye tests play a crucial role in 

monitoring early signs of eye conditions, 

such as cataracts or glaucoma before they 

become significant issues. 

Your eye health is essential to maintaining healthy 

vision but also offer a unique glimpse into your 

overall health. Many systemic conditions, such as 

diabetes, hypertension, raised cholesterol and even 

cardiovascular disease, can manifest symptoms or 

be seen in an eye test. Regular eye examinations can 

serve as an early warning system for these and other 

health issues. 

With time, our eyes may undergo changes. Regular 

eye tests for those over 40 are essential for monitoring 

and addressing age-related vision issues, including 

short-sightedness, longsightedness, astigmatism and 

presbyopia. Presbyopia is where the eyes ability to 

focus on nearer objects or small text changes and is 

easily resolved with the use of glasses or contact lenses. 

Eye diseases often develop gradually and can go 

unnoticed in their early stages. Conditions such 

as glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular 

degeneration can be asymptomatic until they reach 

advanced stages. 

Children eye check-ups are also important. As a 

child grows and develops, a significant portion of 

their learning is visually based. It is essential to be 

proactive about their eye health, as issues may not 

always be immediately apparent. Many vision 

problems in children, such as amblyopia (lazy eye) 

or strabismus (crossed eyes), can be effectively 

treated if detected early. 

By prioritising your eye health, and maintaining regular 

eye test appointments you are more likely to maintain 

clear vision and have a lifetime of healthy eyes.

Hope and Humanity in Action: 40 years of 

quiet action from St Josephs Hall 

Founded in 1984, the London and Slough 

Charitable Trust has long been a lifeline for 

the homeless and those in need. 

What began as a small group commuting from 

Chalfont St. Peter and Slough into London it 

has grown into a vital operation. The charities’ 

“Souper Run” continues today, with volunteers 

traveling to Waterloo, Temple, and Embankment 

to distribute food, clothing, and toiletries. 

In 2014, the charity expanded to offer night 

shelters during winter, providing refuge to those 

experiencing homelessness. By 2020, the trust 

launched a food share program, repurposing 

surplus food from supermarkets to support local 

charities, schools, and churches, reaching up to 

200 people daily. 

At the heart of this effort is Nan Jacobson, an over 

80-year-old stalwart who leads the preparation 

of food packages every Monday at St. Joseph’s 

Church Hall in Chalfont St Peter. Alongside around 

85 unpaid volunteers, Nan ensures that up to 

200 parcels of food, clothing, and essentials are 

delivered each Monday to London’s homeless. 

A multi-faith, non-religious organization, the 

charity welcomes volunteers from all backgrounds, 

united by their shared goal of serving the 

community. For nearly 40 years, the London 

and Slough Charitable Trust has shown how 

small acts of kindness can create lasting change.

Leaving Children 

Unattended – A Family 

Law Perspective 

In the last year, the NSPCC Helpline has 

seen a 65 per cent rise in calls from those 

raising concerns about children being left 

home alone. 

The increasing and unsustainable cost of childcare, 

together with expectations of a return to full-time 

office attendance has meant that parents are 

often leaving children at home for longer periods, 

particularly when those children are of secondary 

school age. 

The law on this point is arguably vague without the 

specification of a mandatory age threshold, and the 

decision left ultimately to the parents’ judgment. 

That said, the implications for getting it wrong are 

severe, with the risk of social services involvement 

and criminal prosecution if a child is exposed to 

‘unnecessary suffering or injury to health’. What the 

vagueness of the law does not take into account and

what the NSPCC data shows is that children, even 

those of secondary school age, are clearly feeling 

the lack of parental presence, supervision and 

support. In our experience as Family Lawyers, children 

have reported feelings of loneliness, lack of support 

with homework and revision and being left to fend 

for themselves at mealtimes. In addition, the risk of 

exposure to harm from third parties - older children 

or adults – whether physically in person (at home or 

in the community) or online cannot be understated, 

as the regular headlines regarding county lines and 

grooming starkly tell us. 

While it may be argued by parents that the 

circumstances are reasonable and justified, the 

effect and impact on children of even being 

left for briefer periods could be tantamount 

to neglect, with potential short and long-term 

consequences.

seasonal Christmas cards. 

Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care provides 

care and support for adults and children with 

a progressive life-limiting illness, and those 

who care for them, in Buckinghamshire and 

Hertfordshire. 

The festive range of cards includes 11 different 

designs, including traditional designs such as a 

robin, three wise men and a flying Santa Claus. 

All money raised from the sale of the cards will go 

towards providing vital hospice care services to 

people living with life-limiting illnesses in the local 

area. 

Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care supports 

its patients to live the best quality of life they 

can through the combination of outpatient, 

rehabilitation and supportive care services, 

Hospice at Home and inpatient care that is 

right for them. 

The charity is also there for those around its 

patients, including family, friends and carers, 

ensuring that everyone can receive the right 

support, wherever and whenever they need it. 

Care is provided at no cost to the patients and 

families and is made possible by the generous 

donations it receives from the local community.

Model Village 

Special Evening Opening

As part of the Chiltern Society Festival of 

Heritage and Culture, Bekonscot will be hosting 

a special evening opening. See the village 

illuminated at dusk, venture behind the scenes 

into the workshops, hear about the history of 

the village and enjoy a buffet and refreshments.

Learning by doing 

Sight Loss Awareness Day 

Tuesday 29th October 10.30am ~ 

4.30pm 

In association with the Guide Dogs Association 

Bekonscot will be hosting an event to raise awareness 

of the work of guide dogs and the effects of 

sight loss. Meet some dogs, experience different 

types of sight loss, and have a go with the many 

aids and equipment designed to help those with 

visual impairments. 

Nearly 80 Scouts (boys and girls aged 

10 to 14) from across Buckinghamshire 

attended a training weekend at Braid 

Wood campsite. The weekend camp was 

for Patrol Leaders and potential Patrol 

Leaders. 

They were given the opportunity to learn new 

skills that would help them develop leadership 

proficiency. These included planning and running 

games and activities, helping new Scouts, 

organising and having input into the programme 

and learning by doing and having fun. 

The main part of the camp was for them to try 

different activities. These included using an axe 

and saw, whittling, building different types of 

fires, knots and pioneering, map skills including 

reading contours and plucking, preparing and 

cooking a pigeon. They were also given the 

opportunity to do some backwoods cooking 

and pitch tents. 

When asked what they liked about Scouts, 

Alex, Chloe and Jacob said, “Meeting new 

people, doing new things like cooking a pigeon, 

camping, water sports and other activities you 

cannot do at school or at home.” 

Volunteer Catherine said, “Volunteering is so 

rewarding. You help young people to learn and 

develop different skills and when they move 

on to the next section you feel you have been 

involved in helping to shape their future. You also 

see them grow and mature in the time they spent 

in the section. In addition you see them become 

more confident.” Catherine added, “It’s lovely 

when a parent says ‘Thank you for helping my 

child, they really enjoy coming along and doing 

different activities.’ ” 

Lucy Parker who arranged the weekend said, “The 

aim of the weekend is to prepare the Scouts for 

the role of Patrol Leader. It will give them tools, 

ideas and lots of fun and friendship. They will be 

given the opportunity to start developing skills for 

life and try some new activities.” 

Due to the continued demand for places, across 

all of the sections, Squirrels (boys and girls aged 

4 and 5) Beavers (boys and girls aged 6 to 8), 

Cubs (boys and girls aged 8 to 10), Scouts (boys 

and girls aged 10 to 14) and Explorers (boys 

and girls aged 14 to 17), more volunteers are 

needed. If you would like to volunteer in any 

capacity including administration, maintenance,

CSP Kindness Club: 

Bringing hope to 

Ukraine and beyond 

The Kindness Club in Chalfont St Peter 

(CSP) exemplifies “kindness in action.” 

Originally established in 2022 as Ukrainian 

Outreach to support displaced Ukrainian 

women and children, the initiative has evolved 

into a broader community effort. The club now 

collects donations for Ukraine biweekly while 

also aiding locals in need. 

“Donations are gathered from our blue 

container, transported to Croydon, and packed 

by volunteers at the White Eagle Polish Club,” 

says organiser Karen Dickson. “From there, 

they’re safely delivered to Przemyśl, near 

the Ukraine border, before reaching remote 

villages in Ukraine. It’s an entire chain of 

volunteers making this possible.” She 

expresses deep gratitude to the Polish 

Club, Polish Specialities, and the local 

community for their ongoing support. 

As the war continues, the Kindness Club 

prioritizes mobility aids, medical equipment, 

and first-aid supplies. Wheelchairs, crutches, 

walkers, and diabetic supplies are welcomed 

at their Mill Meadow donation point (SL9 9QX) 

on Mondays and Wednesdays, 10am to 12pm.

Did you know Buckinghamshire Adult Learning 

offers a huge range of one-day workshops, 

short courses, and qualifications suitable for 

anyone over the age of 19?

shared some of the benefits of joining a course. 

“Course benefits vary depending on your 

individual aims - whether you want to gain 

a new qualification so you can progress at 

work or achieve a personal goal of learning a 

new skill. Taking an adult learning course can 

improve your wellbeing, boost your career 

prospects and create social opportunities with 

like-minded people.” 

Help - I am in debt! 

Many people are in debt but crucially, 

there’s support available. The first step 

is to collect all the information you have 

about your debts, for example contracts, 

bills and statements. 

Next, make a list of debts and the details 

of each. Include who you owe money to (this 

person/company is your ‘creditor’); when you 

first missed a payment; and how much you 

owe. Make a note of your account or reference 

number and what steps the creditor has taken to 

get the money back, eg. sending you letters. 

It might feel overwhelming when you see all 

your debts written down - but try not to worry, the 

important thing is that you’re resorting them out. If 

you’re behind on household bills, prioritise 

paying your rent or mortgage, plus energy bills 

and Council Tax first. Not paying these bills has 

the most serious consequences. 

You should speak to the person or company 

you owe money to, to see if there are any 

manageable steps you can take to start reducing 

your debt. Once you’ve got these priority debts

Age Concern GX 

Centre turns one! 

The Age Concern GX Plus Information 

Centre in Chalfont St Peter’s Market Place 

has celebrated its first birthday, and their 

trustees and other volunteers gathered in 

the centre to celebrate. 

“We took a leap of faith in opening an 

Information Centre amongst our high street 

shops as we were not aware of any similar 

centres being open anymore, and we are 

relieved that almost 2,000 people have been 

through our door over the last year, with 

overwhelming feedback from those that have 

been helped that the centre has proved to be a 

real lifeline. Many have reported how the centre 

has helped turned lives around: a widow finding 

the courage to venture out again, a husband 

finding immediate support for his wife’s dementia 

diagnosis, a blind gentleman getting his daily 

post read to him, a safe space for a widower 

who had lost his wife of 60+ years a few hours 

earlier… The staff and volunteers have been on 

hand to hold the hand of people sometimes 

going through their darkest days,“ said trustee 

Karen Dickson.
