WHEN JOHN Boulton parked 

his ute in the same spot he 

had been parking it for threeand-a-half 

years, he was never 

expecting to be slapped with a 

$40 fine. 

But that is exactly what 

happened when the Rolleston 

resident was fined for having two 

wheels of his ute on the berm 

outside his house. 

In response, Boulton went to 

the council office and presented 

a senior staff member with an 

invoice for berm maintenance. 

Boulton said the staff member 

rejected the invoice and his 

reasons for parking on the berm. 

He says the $2093 bill covers 

his cost of watering, mowing, 

and fertilising the berm for 182 

weeks at $10 a week plus GST. 

“If I can’t use it why should I 

have to pay to maintain it,” he 

said. 

“I told him (council staff 

member) that he can just take 

the ticket amount off the bill.” 

“The guy at the council just 

threw it back at me,” Boulton 

said. 

On the day Boulton received 

the ticket, his ute had only been 

parked on the berm for about 15 

minutes.

Boulton said he only had

berm. With the footpath on 

the other side of the street, 

his indiscretion wasn’t 

likely to be an obstacle for a 

pedestrian or someone out 

and about with their zimmer

ROLLESTON commuters have 

expressed frustration about 

increased traffic due to roadworks. 

Levi Rd has been reduced to 

one lane until September 27, 

only allowing incoming traffic 

to Rolleston, but no way out for 

morning commuters. 

This adds to the work already 

under way on Lincoln Rolleston 

Rd and Shands Rd. 

The roadworks have led to 

increased traffic on roads such as 

Rolleston Dr during peak times. 

The Levi Rd lane reduction is 

in place to ensure the road is fully 

open before subdivision work 

which will close Lincoln Rolleston 

Rd during the school holidays. 

Commuters went online to vent 

their anger at the council, with 

many blaming poor planning. 

As a reaction to the frustration, 

the Rolleston Residents Association 

has proposed a solution where 

the one-way restriction would 

switch from outgoing to incoming 

traffic. This would allow commuter 

traffic to leave in the morning 

and return in the afternoon. 

Association chair Mark Alexander 

said it appeared as if the 

council could not be bothered. 

“If you can have one lane going 

in one direction, it cannot be 

hard to stop the traffic for five 

minutes, turn the signs around 

and go the other way,” Alexander 

said. 

Council head of capital works 

Kamal Narang said it had looked 

at changing the one-way system, 

but it was deemed unfeasible.

assessment. 

“It cannot be any more unsafe 

for workers to reverse the flow. 

If one lane of traffic is unsafe, 

then they’d be closing the whole 

road,” he said. He added that as 

the week has gone on, people 

seem to have adapted to the 

changes. 

Narang apologised for the 

inconvenience but said the work 

was necessary to accommodate 

the growing township.

APOLOGY FOR FAULT 

Council contractor CORDE 

has apologised to motorists for 

delays caused by a fault with 

temporary traffic lights on 

Leeston Rd, near Chamberlains 

Ford. The fault meant the 

automated lights were not 

changing as they should, leaving 

people stuck at a red light for 

more than 20 minutes. The 

lights have now been replaced. 

MAN CHARGED AFTER 

VEHICLE THEFT 

A Woolston man has been 

charged after he allegedly stole a 

car in Castle Hill and rammed 

a police 4WD in the village on 

May 5. Senior Sergeant Rachel 

Walker said the 31-year-old 

has been charged with multiple 

offences, including two counts 

of failing to stop when signalled 

and two counts of driving while 

disqualified. The man has been 

remanded in custody and will 

reappear in the Christchurch 

District Court on September 20.

“I parked on the berm so traffic 

could still flow as there was a 

truck on the opposite side of the 

road delivering gas to a house. If I 

had parked where I was supposed 

to, no traffic could get through,” 

he said. 

While council bylaws say it 

is an offence to park on a berm 

which is separated from the road 

by a kerb, Boulton believes he 

should have at least been given a 

warning. 

“If I got a warning there would 

not have been an issue.” 

He is now considering fighting 

the fine in court and has 56 days 

from the date of issue to request a 

hearing. 

Council head of regulatory 

Susan Atherton declined to 

comment on Boulton’s ticket 

In the financial year ending 

June 30, the council had issued 

almost $120,000 in parking 

infringements. 

So far more than $20,000 has 

been collected this financial year. 

Council does not have a 

breakdown of how many tickets 

were issued for illegal parking on 

a berm, but Atherton said since 

October the number of complaints 

received for parking on berms has 

dropped by 70 per cent. 

In May the council spent 

$20,000 on 15 body cameras for 

staff including those out ticketing 

vehicles. 

For unpaid parking fines, the 

council sends out a reminder 

after 28 days, which allows an 

additional 28 days for the fine to 

be paid before the council refers 

it to the Ministry of Justice. 

Lower kerbs, such as those on 

Boulton’s street, were designed in 

the early 2000s to be mountable, 

enabling berm parking due to 

roads becoming narrower. But 

now the council says this is no 

longer permitted. 

Said Atherton: “They (berms) 

often have important services 

and utilities under them such as 

water and sewer pipes, which can 

be damaged by parking on them. 

This damage costs ratepayers in 

increased, unnecessary repairs.” 


CONSULTATION has begun 

on a 110km/h speed limit for the 

Southern Motorway. 

If the speed limit rise gets the 

green light, it will become 

the first road in the South 

Island to have a 110km/h 

limit. 

The public consultation 

comes after Mayor Sam 

Broughton wrote to 

Minister of Transport 

Simeon Brown asking for 

a speed limit increase, 

suggesting it could go as 

high as 120km/h. 

Broughton later 

clarified his comments 

saying that a 110km/h 

limit was the more likely 

outcome. 

“I personally support 

the conclusion of the 

NZTA (New Zealand 

Transport Agency) speed 

limit review that 110km/h is the 

right balance for this stretch 

of road, but it is important 

for the community to provide

Curletts Rd interchange

or serious injury in a 

crash, including two 

lanes in each direction, 

flexible median barrier 

between opposing lanes, 

and a smooth alignment 

that offers good forward 

visibility for drivers.” 

There have been mixed 

views from Selwyn Times 

readers about the changes 

with a Star News poll 

showing there was more 

support for the increased speed.

Travel agent to saviour – Hayley’s 


FOUR YEARS ago, Hayley 

Bykerk went from being a travel 

agent to working on a farm. But 

she was horrified by one aspect 

of farming life – the treatment of 

bobby calves. 

On dairy farms across New 

Zealand, more than two million 

bobby calves are killed as a byproduct 

of the dairy process. Most 

only live four days before being 

sent to the processors. 

Bykerk is saving as many as she 

can and has rehomed about 130 

calves over the past two years. 

She started her calf mission in 

2020 after switching careers from 

travel agent to calf rearer due to 

the Covid-19 pandemic. 

“I was at House of Travel in the 

long-haul team. Most of our team 

lost their jobs,” she said. 

“I was like oh my god what am 

going to do for a job? And I saw 

there was a calf-rearing job advertised 

in Rakaia.” 

Apart from growing up with 

some goats and sheep at the 

family home in Ladbrooks, 

she had little to no farming 

experience before starting her 

new role. 

“During that job, I learnt about 

the bobby calf system. I was 

quite horrified that they’re only 

four days old and their life is just

starting, but just ending pretty 

much straight after. 

“So I took a few home that year 

and learnt to rear them and sell 

them once they were weaned. Last 

year I did about 50 and this year 

I’m up to about 70.” 

Bykerk currently has about 17 

calves with her in Ladbrooks, 

along with eight pet cows she has 

kept, including Minnie, the first 

calf she rehomed because she was 

too small to go on the bobby calf 

truck at the time. 

“She’s still a small cow now,” 

Bykerk said. 

However, her biggest rehoming 

challenge was Monty, who was 

born prematurely and could not 

stand for five days.

“He got really sick three times 

and ended up with two bad sessions 

of bloat and went into a 

septic state. His heart rate was oneand-a-half 

times what it should 

have been.” 

Bobby calves are rejected by 

farmers often because they are 

male on a dairy farm or because 

they are too small and do not meet 

the farmer’s criteria. 

Last year Fonterra introduced 

rules preventing farmers from 

euthanising calves, unless there 

were humane reasons to do so. 

Veal from the calves is often 

used for dog food. 

Bykerk said she loves the calves 

too much to see them go to the 

processors. 

“They’re very cool little animals. 

You just have to look at their face 

and their little eyes. They’re so 

innocent and full of love and full 

of fun and all have different little 

personalities. 

“I love coming home to them. 

You can’t really be upset around 

them, they just lift your mood.” 

For the calves she rehomes, 

Bykerk does not mind if they 

end up at the meat processor 

eventually, as long as they get a 

decent life beforehand.

what it is. In my book, any life that 

is longer than four days is better 

than one that’s only four days,’’ she 

said. 

A normal day for Bykerk starts 

with an hour of feeding her 

animals, which include horses, 

a few goats and sheep, as well as 

the calves, before heading off to 

Springston to work on a farm for 

the day. 

After returning home, she 

spends another two hours feeding 

the animals and cleaning pens, 

before dinner and an early 

bedtime. 

Helping Bykerk is 12-year-old 

“They’re very cool little 

animals. You just have 

to look at their face and 

their little eyes. They’re 

so innocent and full of 

love and full of fun and 

all have different little 

personalities.”

Aysha Adair who lives nearby and 

comes across to help out in the 

evenings. 

“She’s amazing and messages me 

saying ‘can I come help tonight’. 

Without her, I wouldn’t be able.” 

In between caring for her 

own animals and farm work, 

she also runs a mobile vet 

service – Moo’bile Farm Animal 

Services, after training to be a vet 

technician. 

Bykerk usually gets the calves 

from farms she works on, taking 

them when they’re four days old 

and keeping them for a couple of 

weeks before they’re rehomed. 

“I make sure they are in good 

health before I send them away.” 

Adopting a calf from Bykerk 

costs about $70, depending on 

age, with the cost covering her 

expenses. 

She said the people adopting 

calves often own lifestyle blocks 

and are looking for a pet. 

For anyone looking to adopt 

a calf, Bykerk said you will need 

to have good shelter like a shed 

or barn, as well as a blanket to 

keep them warm and a bottle for 

feeding. 

She said it’s also important to 

have good fencing, and it helps if 

people adopt two calves so they 

have a friend.

EL NINO weather conditions 

contributed to an increased 

number of callouts for the 

district’s brigades. 

The district’s 13 volunteer 

brigades attended 1556 callouts 

in the year ending June 30, 217 

more than the previous year. 

Numbers released by Fire 

and Emergency New Zealand 

show callouts to vegetation fires 

increased by 199 to 403. 

El Nino brought warm and 

windy weather conditions to the 

district last summer, increasing 

the fire risk. 

Kirwee Volunteer Fire Brigade 

was called out to 42 vegetation 

fires in the last financial year, up 

from 11 the year prior. 

Deputy fire chief Ben Hide 

said summer conditions were 

much warmer and windier than 

the previous year. 

“The season prior was quite a 

wet summer, but this summer 

was definitely a lot busier,” he 

said. 

“There were quite a lot of largescale 

calls in our area with two 

forestry fires down Old West 

Coast Rd, plus the railway (line) 

fire which spanned across five or 

six days.” 

Firefighters are warning people 

to be careful with burn-off piles, 

even if they have been out for a 

number of weeks, as warmer and 

windier weather could see them 

reignite. 

Last Thursday, Kirwee was 

called to a burn-off pile which 

had reignited at Charing Cross. 

“That’s the issue at the moment 

with people’s burn piles. If you 

get a big windy day, they just 

reignite themselves,” Hide said.

In October, the Rolleston 

brigade moved from being a 

first-response role to being a coresponder 

on life-threatening 

callouts, in a bid to reduce 

strain on volunteers. 

“Every fire station still does 

medical response stuff, if it’s a 

purple call (life-threatening) we 

have to go,” Tier said. 

Rolleston is also picking 

up some of the calls from 

Burnham, while the New 

Zealand Defence Force did not 

have its fire station staffed. 

Tier said the Wigram brigade, 

which is staffed 24/7, has also 

been responding to callouts in 

Izone, along with trucks from 

Rolleston.

Border collie that dodged death 

crowned country’s top office dog

THIRTEEN years ago, an 

overactive border collie cross was 

taken to the vet to be put down. 

The family simply could not 

cope with the one-year-old dog 

and their young children. 

But they were asked to 

reconsider, as the dog was 

healthy. 

Rolleston resident Catherine 

Hughes, a vet at the clinic, took 

in the border collie and renamed 

him Muddi. 

Now 14, Muddi has just been 

named New Zealand’s top office 

dog. 

Runner-up in the top office 

category for the second year 

in a row was another dog with 

connections to the district, 

huntaway Koozer, who keeps 

staff company at Airpark 

Christchurch. His owner, 

Graeme Harris, has a property in 

West Melton. 

Almost 400 dogs entered Frog 

Recruitment’s annual search 

for the titles of top office dog, 

top dog with a job and people’s 

choice award. 

Muddi hangs out at the 

Shirley Veterinary Clinic in 

Christchurch with Hughes, who 

said the win was incredible. 

“It was quite emotional, 

actually. I wasn’t expecting it at 

all and my heart was going so 

fast. And then they said he won 

and I was just over the moon. It’s 

just such an honour for an old 

boy like him to be recognised,” 

she said. 

“It’s incredibly special to have 

some recognition for a dog that 

wasn’t supposed to survive and 

he’s done so much since then.” 

Hughes is involved with 

avalanche search and rescue, so 

she took Muddi along with her 

to a training camp after adopting 

him. 

“One of the trainers saw him 

and loved him and thought he 

was really talented. 

“We got signed up and a couple 

of years later we became a search 

and rescue team.” 

Hughes and Muddi were in the 

service for two years. 

While the duo didn’t have an 

active deployment, Hughes said 

her favourite memory of their 

time training was when Muddi 

had already dug through to the 

person he was looking for before 

she made it up the slope. 

“With his bounce and long 

legs it took no time at all for 

him to get up there, whilst I was 

left puffing in his wake, trying 

desperately to make my way 

through the fairly deep snow. 

“He gave me a very reproachful 

look by the time I got there, 

clearly wondering why it took

me so long.” 

Muddi retired from search and 

rescue eight years ago. 

When he’s not at the clinic 

with Hughes, he works as a 

service dog for St John. He 

has a regular placement at a 

residential home for adults with 

intellectual disabilities and also 

offers support to students before 

exams. 

Hughes said Muddi spends 

most of his days at the vet clinic 

sleeping. 

“I tend to work quite long 

hours, but he is very patient. He 

has a bed under the desk in our 

manager’s office, which I drop 

him off at when we arrive. 

“Staff will come and take him 

out for wee and have a pat and 

a cuddle and stroke his ears 

because they’re really soft.” 

Muddi has a knack of pinching 

the manager’s lunch. 

OVER THE MOON: 

Catherine Hughes was 

emotional when she found 

out Muddi was the winner 

of New Zealand’s top office 

dog award. 

“I have to check that our 

manager hasn’t left her lunch 

within reach because he has a 

talent for finding and eating it.” 

Hughes said it was really lovely 

to have Muddi in the clinic. 

“He brings comfort and solace 

to many people. 

“The vet world is incredibly 

stressful sometimes. The 

profession’s got some of the 

highest suicide rates of any, 

which people don’t know. So for 

him to be able to offer a bit of 

comfort and support to the 

staff and clients is really 

important. 

“He seems to understand 

instinctively who needs time 

for a cuddle or a quick pat in 

passing. He also offers support 

to children whose families are in 

the process of losing their pets 

and is an incredibly gentle soul 

with them.”

THE LOCATION of a 17m-high 

communications tower has 

been confirmed for the centre of 

Lincoln. 

The tower is part of a national 

programme to improve communication 

for emergency services, 

and is expected to be completed 

later this year. 

The tower, built by Tait Communications, 

will be located 

next to the Chorus exchange 

building on Lyttelton St, 

between it and Lincoln Community 

Care. 

The proposed tower was 

moved from the library side 

of the Chorus building to the 

north side after 

pressure from 

the community, 

which culminated 

in a meeting 

last month. 

Once built, 

the tower will be 

next to two public 

plazas, which 

are part of a $46 

million town 

centre upgrade to be carried out 

over the next 10 years. 

Lincoln Voice spokesperson 

Denise Carrick said it was good 

to see the tower’s proposed 

location moved, but would have 

preferred it away from the town 

centre altogether. 

“We are fairly sure that 

nobody really imagined a 

town square with farmers 

markets, music events, family 

competitions, Christmas 

markets, etcetera, with a huge 

cellphone-like tower looming 

over them.” 

In its initial search for a 

location, Tait had considered 

the fire station and Lincoln 

University, but both were 

deemed unsuitable. After the 

community meeting, Tait 

also considered the Lincoln 

Event Centre, but that wasn’t 

unsuitable either. 

A Tait spokesperson said 

several sites were investigated 

around Lincoln. 

“The Chorus site was by far the 

best technical fit. In the case of 

the event centre, the trees in the

Market. Market chair Gary 

Miller is now happy with the 

location. 

Said Miller: “Wherever it was 

going to go, somebody was not 

going to be happy with it, and 

it’s a pragmatic solution to put 

it on the north side of the building. 

“It’s like anything, people will 

get used to it over time.” 

No standalone 

spending review 


A RESIDENTS’ association 

is disappointed the council is 

not going to do a review of its 

spending and projects in the 

2024-34 Long-Term Plan. 

Darfield Residents Association 

had passed a motion at its meeting 

requesting the council do 

a complete review of proposed 

costs, expenditure, timing of 

projects and asset sales, with a 

view to limiting future increases 

to affordable levels. 

The motion came after the 

council signed off a 14.9 per cent 

average rates rise, and forecasted 

double-digit rates rises for the 

next three years. 

Said association chair Harvey 

Polglase: “Such increases are unacceptable 

and are likely to lead 

to a rates revolt unless council 

reins in their ambitions.” 

The motion also received 

backing from the Malvern Community 

Board. 

But the council disagreed with 

it. 

“The council has recently 

completed a detailed assessment 

of our expenditure as part of the 

long term plan and it has been 

based on extensive community 

consultation to minimise the 

proposed rates increases for the

growing community,”

chief executive 

Steve Gibling. 

“At this stage, 

there are no

of under 7 per cent.”

is planning to put forward a

Southern Motorway speed limit debate 

THERE IS ample evidence that 

shows “the faster the speed, the 

bigger the mess”. Saving two 

minutes of travel time does not 

justify raising the speed limit. 

Already there are many accidents 

along that stretch of road. Think 

how much worse it will get. 

Our driving won’t improve. 

Are drivers going to increase 

their following distances, use 

indicators, drive in the correct 

lane? I doubt it. Commonsense 

must prevail here.

of more than their share of rate 

increases. Why have our rates

The council’s plan is to take 

away our representation, including 

community boards and to 

take the Sheffield community’s 

swimming pool. Lately, it took 

the Russells Flat water tank without 

telling anybody. 

This has been a community 

asset from the inception of the 

Dalethorpe rural agricultural 

water scheme nearly 50 years 

ago. It has continued to be paid 

by us, the ratepayers, often being 

the only accessible water for local 

residents in a range of emergencies. 

No consultation was done 

by council staff before or 

after the water tank was 

sneakily demolished. Where 

are the council strategies like 

collaborative planning, working 

with farmers and identifying 

local issues and aspirations for 

water management? 

We need the council to 

come and consult with this 

community regarding the needs 

of the future, and not just ‘take’.

Playground fundraiser 

brings in the brick fans 

A COLOURFUL day of fun, 

and creativity was on offer for the 

600-strong crowd who attended 

Saturday’s Darfield Bricktacular. 

Organised by Darfield Primary 

School’s PTA, the event was a 

fundraiser for the school’s new 

playground. 

After seeing its roll increase 

by more than 70 pupils since 

2019, the school had to install 

temporary classrooms. The only 

available space was on part of the 

existing playground site, so now a 

new one is needed. 

To raise funds, the PTA held a 

sausage sizzle, bake sale and raffle 

alongside local stallholders and 

food trucks, all decorated to fit the 

brick theme. 

The PTA won’t be able to 

confirm how much money was 

raised until the raffle is drawn 

on Friday, but it is expected to be 

on par with last year’s $8500. 

The event featured 25 displays 

from exhibitors around Canterbury, 

with Christchurch’s Ashley 

Tierney winning the People’s 

Choice award. 

Alongside the exhibitions, 

individual build competitions 

were also held.

Alpine expedition a chance 

to learn for Darfield students 

ASPIRING mountaineers from 

Darfield High School recently had 

the chance to navigate the alpine 

terrain of Temple Basin. 

The three day expedition was 

part of the required course work 

for the school’s level two outdoor 

education students. 

During their first day in the 

mountains, teacher Claudia Petrie 

said the class practiced plugging 

steps (forming steps in deep 

snow), using ice axes, and getting 

used to moving through an alpine 

environment. 

“The weather was perfect, and 

we watched a southerly front blow 

around us, with great views of Mt 

Rolleston,” she said. 

The class travelled to Bills Basin 

on the second day and learned 

how to zig-zag their way up 

the slope towards Temple Col, 

breaking to learn how to self arrest 

(stopping when sliding on ice). 

A col is the lowest point of a 

ridge or saddle between peaks. 

“The views from the col were 

epic, and we got a great team 

photo before descending back 

down to Pages Hut,” Petrie said. 

“The snow conditions were a bit 

wet for snow caves, so we learned 

how to clear platforms and put up 

tents in the snow.”

hiked back to Temple Basin before

Potato peril thwarted by researchers 

THREE YEARS ago, 5 per cent of 

Canterbury’s potatoes were being 

lost to a disease which threatened 

to shut down the industry. Now 

the pest responsible has been 

driven off by Lincoln University 

researchers. 

The story starts in 2008, when 

a small bug named the Tomato 

Potato Psyllid found its way into 

New Zealand in 2008. 

Despite being only a few 

millimetres in size, these insects 

brought a big problem with them. 

Within a year, it floated on the 

wind down to the South Island, 

breeding and feeding on crops. 

Unfortunately for farmers, 

the psyllid (known as TPP) had 

a passenger along for the ride. 

The insect is host to Candidatus 

Liberibacter solanacearum, a type 

of bacteria which spreads through 

crops. The bacterium sits in the 

saliva of the psyllid and when it 

penetrates a leaf or stem with its 

proboscis, that infected saliva 

makes its way into the plant. 

That meant bad news for New 

Zealand’s potato industry. In 

potatoes, the bacterium manifests 

as ‘zebra chip’. 

Diseased plants grow tubers 

with unattractive black marks. It’s 

safe to eat, but extremely bitter. 

If you’ve ever had a crisp or hot 

chip that was bitter, dark brown or 

black, that’s zebra chip. 

Three years ago, the disease was

so widespread that at one point 

5.7 per cent of Canterbury potato 

crops were infected. 

Enter Clive Kaiser, Lincoln 

University associate professor in 

the Department of Agricultural 

Sciences. 

In 2021 Kaiser moved from 

Oregon State University to 

Lincoln, bringing with him 

years of specialist knowledge in 

integrated pest management. 

When introduced to the 

problem, Kaiser tackled it with 

a holistic approach. He and his 

team set out 

to research 

TPP and teach 

growers how to 

handle it. 

He said it 

was vital to 

understand 

everything about Clive Kaiser 

the pest in order 

to control it, including its lifecycle 

and where it bred. This meant 

scouting and identifying the pest, 

studying the height at which they 

flew, regularly trapping them and 

inspecting them for the disease. 

A breakthrough was getting 

industrial growers to change their 

pesticide spraying cycles to target 

the pest earlier in its lifecycle. 

The precision targeting has 

stopped the population from 

spreading among potato crops, 

but it was another method which 

brought the population down. 

“When I first got here, I wanted 

to understand the pest better. 

They told me it was on African 

boxthorns along the beach at 

Rakaia River. 

“I was shocked at the incidence 

of eggs, nymphs and adults on 

those plants. There literally were 

millions. The entire bush was 

covered in them.” 

He decided the best course of 

action was to release biocontrol 

agents – predators of TPP that 

would feed on the insects. 

A collection of pirate bugs, 

minute pirate bugs, Engytatus and 

brown Tasman lacewing were 

introduced to the boxthorns at 

Rakaia River, as well as nine other 

hot spots at commercial fields. 

He also taught growers which 

plants hosted TPP, many of which 

were weeds and had previously 

been ignored. 

Since then, the number of 

infected plants has dropped to less 

than 0.01 per cent. 

It’s been sustained at those levels 

both this year and last year. 

The work continues to this day, 

with Lincoln researchers trapping 

and scouting the pests regularly. 

Despite the infection numbers 

being down, Kaiser and his team 

are still working to make sure the 

pest doesn’t come back. 

The latest control method is 

calcium. Plants treated with the 

mineral appear unattractive to the 

psyllid, deterring it from feeding 

and thus spreading the disease. 

Kaiser collaborated with 

researchers at the United States 

Department of Agriculture, who 

repeated the trials and recorded 

the same results. 

So far it has only been achieved 

in the lab, but Potatoes New 

Zealand wants to fund field trials, 

starting in October. 

Kaiser wants to use this 

research as a way to change the 

industry for the better. 

At present growers were 

spraying pesticides on their crops 

at an unsustainable level. Not only 

does it affect the environment 

and produce, it was costing them 

thousands per hectare each year. 

Kaiser believes three targeted 

sprays a year would suffice, 

resulting in more profit and far 

less pesticide on our food. 

“It’s better for the people 

consuming them and better for 

the environment. 

“Everybody wants less 

chemicals in their food.”

Burnham survive comeback to 

claim third premier netball title

The team sealed a three-peat 

of Selwyn premier 1 trophies 

last Thursday, beating Greenpark 

B 62-51 in the final at the 

Selwyn Sports Centre. 

Coach Denise Keno said the 

team was “pretty stoked” with 

the result. 

“Bit of a fairytale really,” she 

said. 

“The plan was to have a good 

start, so thankfully the girls 

followed the plan. I’m a hundred 

per cent stoked, I knew they 

could do it.” 

Burnham started strongly, 

stretching out to a 32-17 lead 

just before the end of the second 

quarter. 

Greenpark B pulled it back 

substantially in the third 

quarter – at one point only 

44-38 down – and their coach 

Vanessa Robinson thought her 

side was well-and-truly back in 

the contest. 

“The vibe was lifted, the heads 

were lifted, they were all amped 

up for it,” Robinson said. 

“Then we came out, starting 

that last quarter, and threw 

the ball away. I think that was 

almost the nail in the coffin.” 

Burnham pulled away in 

the back end of the game, and 

Keno said she was proud of the 

resilience shown by her side. 

“There were up and down 

patches. We got a wee bit loose 

in the third quarter, but they 

managed to maintain their 

composure and pick it back up 

again in the fourth,” she said.

“My centre, Gemma 

Rowe, and wing attack, Rae 

Gathergood, were really solid. 

“And I don’t like to say it 

because she’s my daughter, Ruby 

(Keno) played goal attack and 

put on a show,” Keno said. 

“She just fed our goal shooter, 

outstanding. 

“Our shooter (Liv Clark) got 

50 goals in out of the 60 (61) 

goals. That was down to our 

midcourt and our goal attack 

feeding her beautifully.” 

Afterwards, Burnham had 

a good time celebrating their 

victory. 

“We went and had a couple 

of drinks to celebrate. One of 

our parents had live streamed 

the game so they were all sitting 

watching it again at the pub. It 

was really nice,” Keno said.

Castle Hill Village Hall reopens for the community 

The Castle Hill Village Community Centre 

has recently reopened and is available again 

for bookings. 

In March this year the hall was upgraded with 

a small building extension and fire and 

accessibility improvements. 

It was open just in time for the Arthur’s Pass and 

Castle Hill Community Response Team volunteers to 

provide their warm hospitality to 45 people who had 

an unexpected stay in Arthur’s Pass and Castle Hill, 

when State Highway 73 was shut for snow on Sunday 

18 August. The hall kept these people warm, while 

accommodation was being sorted 

The hall was originally built in 1999, but since then 

the Castle Hill community has seen reasonable 

growth, which now requires a larger facility for 

gatherings and for emergency management activities.

Ellesmere’s loss to old rivals Nth Canty 

a ‘gutting’ way to finish the season

ELLESMERE’S Southbridge Shield 

challenge – and Tane Norton 

Trophy season – ended with a 55-13 

defeat at the hands of traditional 

rivals North Canterbury in 

Rangiora on Sunday. 

It was Ellesmere’s third consecutive 

loss in the annual match for the 

shield. 

Head coach Dave Kettles said it 

was a “gutting” way to finish. 

“You put a lot into it and you 

don’t want to end up with a result 

like that, but, at the end of the day, 

it’s happened. You can’t change the 

result,” said Kettles. 

“(North Canterbury) were very, 

very good. Hats off to them, they 

were far too good for us in all areas.” 

Ellesmere finished at the bottom 

of the Tane Norton Trophy series, 

won by the Cantabrians. But with a 

young squad this year, Kettles said 

there were signs for a bright future. 

“Hopefully they’ll go forward and 

kick on, take something out of that 

and be better for it next year.” 

Ellesmere won three of their other 

matches against North Canterbury, 

with the colts, under 18 and under 

16 sides all victorious – the latter 

by a huge 80-15 margin – while the 

senior development side lost 32-7.

Prepare your soil for better growing

Vegetables 

Green manure crops can continue to be 

dug in and the ground prepared for seed 

sowing by breaking down the surface 

with a fork and raking it level. 

Dig green manure into the top 15cm of 

soil only, as the organisms that convert 

green manure to humus are more numerous 

there. 

Green manure crops, such as mustard 

and oats, which make rapid growth at 

this time of the year, can be sown in garden 

areas not needed until late summer 

or autumn. Mustard is closely related 

to the brassica family (Brussels sprouts, 

broccoli, cabbage), so if those crops are 

to be sown in the space, choose oats or 

barley for the green manure. 

Do not dig if the soil is wet. 

This is especially important with heavy 

clay soils, as they become concrete-like 

when they dry out after being dug when 

waterlogged. 

Any swedes, carrots, parsnips and 

leeks still in the ground can be lifted and 

heeled in a corner of the garden to clear 

the way for sowing new seed during the 

next few weeks.

Parsnips freeze well: peel, cut them 

into pieces and freeze without blanching. 

Parsnips require a longer growing season 

than other root crops. Any time from 

now until the first week in October will 

give seedlings the good start they need. 

Poorly drained soil can be improved 

by pouring about 1cm of sand in the 

bottom of the seed drills. Cover the seed 

with more sand. Avoid sowing parsnips 

in recently manured ground or they will 

develop forked roots. 

Ground which last had cabbage, cauliflower 

or Brussels sprouts grown in it is 

suitable.

Add garden lime (30g/sq m) and a 

dusting of superphosphate before sowing. 

Parsnip seed quickly loses its vitality, 

so fresh seed should be bought each year. 

Parsley is best sown in a position accessible 

in all weather. The herb can be sown 

now and likes a soil rich in organic material 

and slightly acidic i.e., without lime 

added. Sowing now and again in autumn 

gives parsley for year-round use. 

French beans, sweet corn and salad 

plants can be sown under cloches or old 

windows. 

Peas should be sown in small quantities. 

Little and often gives crops over a 

longer period and avoids the problem of 

them all being ready at once and going to 

waste. 

Flowers 

In warmer districts, hardy annuals can 

be sown where they are to flower. As 

with all seeds, the trick is to have the soil 

well-prepared before sowing. Once seedlings 

appear, thin them out to prevent 

overcrowding. 

Hardy, prolific and reliable flowers 

include alyssum, calendula, coreopsis, 

candytuft, cornflower, clarkia, godetia, 

Californian poppy (Eschscholtzia), larkspur, 

linaria, linum, night-scented stock 

(Matthiola bicornis), mignonette, love-ina-mist 

(nigella), pansy and viscaria. 

Nasturtiums flower all summer in full 

sun or partial shade. 

They do well in poor soil but are frost 

tender so should not be planted out until 

the danger of frost has passed. 

Modern varieties such as Black Velvet, 

Empress of India, Peach Melba, Whirlybird 

types and the semidouble Salmon 

Baby are more compact than older trailing 

types and do not take off across the 

garden. 

Perennials to raise from seed from now 

until the end of October include granny 

bonnet (aquilegia), dianthus, dahlia, delphinium, 

gaillardia, geum, gypsophila, 

hollyhock, lupin, penstemon, polyanthus, 

pyrethrum and viola. 

These will all flower within 12 months 

and some will bloom in their first season. 

Start them in trays of seed-raising mix, 

then plant them in the open garden when 

they have made some growth.

Disease-causing fungal spores overwinter

spray to water) or a Bordeaux mixture

not use sprays on hot, sunny days as they 

may cause scorching.

Awards (BFEA) have become a rural 

institution. Each year, they celebrate 

farmer and grower achievement and 

showcase good practice, enabling the 

sharing of positive farming and growing 

stories with all audiences. 

Most of all, they offer a great – and 

free – service to farmers and growers, to 

receive detailed on-farm analysis, and 

direct verbal and written feedback from 

other agricultural professionals about 

enhancing sustainable management 

practices. 

At least three reps will visit so that 

you can show them round and discuss 

your questions and concerns directly 

– they will be experienced farming 

peers and agribusiness professionals, 

many of whom are previous entrants. 

Your farm system will be assessed on 

aspects including: Animal & Plant 

Care; Biodiversity; Business Health; 

Climate; People & Wellbeing; Soil; 

Water; and Waste Management. You will 

then receive a holistic and pragmatic 

written review of your business, 

including environmental management, 

productivity and profitability, and family 

and community involvement.

Regional winners are appointed in a 

range of categories and considered for 

the national level awards. Celebratory

local success story. 

The awards are run by the New 

Zealand Farm Environment Trust 

(NZFET), established in the late 1990s to 

nationalise the awards, which had begun 

in 1993 in the Waikato. The NZFET 

website is a wealth of case studies 

gathered from these awards over the 

years, which they call “Great Farming 

Stories”. 

These winners sound amazing, but 

don’t be intimidated – the awards 

website says that the best time to enter 

your property is when you 

feel it isn’t ready. That way, 

you can learn from great 

advice, and enter again at any 

time in the future. You just 

have to be an economically 

viable farming or growing 

business enterprise, based on 

the productive or amenity 

use of soils or other natural 

resources.

Getting stuck into Conservation 


From getting your hands dirty to 

plugging in your headphones, there’s so 

many ways to enjoy and participate in 

Conservation Week. 

Conservation Week/Te Wiki Tiaki Ao 

Tūroa runs from 2 to 8 September. It 

has two themes this year, one expressed 

in English and one in Māori. They’re 

not translations of each other, but 

complementary. We are encouraged 

to “Take action for nature”, and “Mō te 

taiao te take”, which roughly translates 

to “Motivate your action by love for the 

environment”. 

Living rurally, we’re naturally 

surrounded by opportunities to do both 

these things. 

To spark some ideas, see the brilliant 

suggestions on the Department of 

Conservation website: www.doc.govt.nz/ 

news/events/conservation-week. There’s 

a delightful list of ideas for kiddies, 

which sound pretty fun for adults as 

well. From wētā motels to sensory bingo 

to making a star wheel to becoming a 

Pest Detective… there’s projects aplenty 

that will keep kids busy well beyond this 

one week. Parents and teachers, take 

note! 

For adults, there’s practical 

suggestions like organising a rubbish 

clean-up, or supporting Aotearoa to 

become predator-free by 

2050 by donating a trap to a 

community group, made easy 

through the online donation 

platform. 

But after that, adults get 

to have fun too. Bliss out 

with DOC’s immersive digital nature 

sounds, with soundscapes lasting 

from one minute to five hours! Enjoy 

videos of dolphins or penguins, or grab 

the chance to go VR and soak in the 

stunning views on the Kepler Track, or 

discover hidden kākāpō on Codfish and 

Anchor Islands and penguin colonies on 

the subantarctic Antipodes. 

For a conservation activity to 

share with family, friends, clubs and 

workmates, look into the public planting 

events with Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway 

Canterbury Trust. 

These events are educational as well as 

satisfying. Each begins with an ecologist 

giving a planting demonstration and 

some background on the site. Friendly 

Te Ara Kākāriki team members are on 

hand throughout the day to answer 

any questions. They always provide 

spades, clean gloves, drinking water, 

morning and afternoon tea, portaloo 

and handwashing facilities. For the 

September 8 and October 6 events, 

lunch and bus transport are also 

provided. All round, it’s a great day out.

Stylish Yaris Cross brings green credentials 

TOYOTA’S decision to create 

an SUV version of its smallest 

car, the Yaris, has been a master 

stroke, although naming it the 

‘Cross’ less so, although even 

that hasn’t stopped it becoming 

one of the company’s best selling 

small vehicles. 

Despite being around for more 

than three years and our new car 

market moving down through 

the gears as demand slows in 

response to tighter economic 

times, buyers still face wait 

times. 

The Yaris Cross shares 

the same well-proven and 

engineered chassis, suspension 

and powertrains from the 

fourth generation Yaris. The 

end result is a highly competent, 

functional, stylish and packed 

with a full suite of safety and 

driver assist technologies. 

Practicality, more room and 

style make even its higher price a 

more desirable vehicle for many 

compared to the diminutive fivedoor 

Yaris. 

There is a sizeable difference 

between the Yaris hatch and its 

new Cross sibling. Overall, it’s 

240mm longer has 50mm more 

front overhang and a whopping 

Motoring with Bob Nettleton 

180mm at the rear. It has an 

additional extra 30mm worth 

of ground clearance and stands 

90mm taller, enabling the Yaris 

Cross to stand tall in the mini 

urban SUV class. 

Since its launch nearly four 

years ago, the Yaris Cross has 

morphed into a three strong 

petrol-hybrid only range and 

inline with all Toyota NZ 

passenger vehicles that are 

now low emission and low fuel 

consumption hybrids. 

The hybrid powertrain is 

a cut-and-paste job from the 

original Yaris, pairing a 1.5-litre 

naturally aspirated threecylinder 

petrol motor and petrol 

electric hybrid system. 

First step on the Yaris Cross 

ladder is the $38,990 GX. From 

there it’s a sizeable monetary 

leap to the $45,190 GR Sport, 

and a more modest $1k jump 

into the flagship Limited. You 

can personalise for a further $1k 

with a nifty two-tone paint job. 

If you’re serious about 

reducing you carbon footprint 

by driving something cleaner 

and greener, the distinctive 

Yaris Cross makes a compelling 

case with super low CO2 engine 

emissions of just 76g/km. 

The 1.5-litre three-cylinder 

petrol electric hybrid system 

has a combined power output 

of 85kW. In urban motoring 

the hybrid has amazingly low 

engine noise levels. The cabin 

becomes a cone of silence when 

the hybrid system is running in 

electric-only mode, something 

it regularly does for extended 

periods on billiard table flat 

urban roads. 

It moves seamlessly between 

its double life of petrol and 

electric and back again, a credit 

to an advanced and effective 

lithium-ion battery and electric 

motor set-up. 

I noticed the petrol engine 

component of the hybrid 

sounded busy with its threecylinder 

thrum to the fore when 

a bit of hard graft is needed on 

steeper hills. 

City driving is very much the 

happy place for this fashionable 

mini-sized SUV and what it 

was designed for. Going beyond 

the urban limits nudges it and 

the driver ever-so slightly out 

of their comfort zones. Longer 

open road trips are doable and 

the test vehicle was comfortable 

enough on a 200km roadie. 

A direct shift CVT (continuously 

variable transmission) is 

purpose-built to deliver on 

its claimed 3.5L/100km fuel 

economy. 

Ratings out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 6; Build Quality 

7; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 7; Value for 

money: 5; Safety – Five star ANCAP crash rating. 

Overall points out of 10: 7 

The cabin has a sophisticated 

and comfortable feel, with the 

Yaris Cross the first compact 

SUV from Toyota to feature 

a 40/20/40 split rear seat. The 

390-litre luggage capacity is good 

but not class-leading. Folding 

down the centre rear seat means 

skis can be stowed comfortably. 

The Limited features a smart 

key, powered rear door with 

‘kick sensor’ for easy loading and 

unloading of the weekly grocery 

shop. 

The seating has a nice 

upmarket look and feel, and 

so it should given it $45k plus 

price sticker, featuring premium 

tweed-like fabric inserts and 

synthetic leather. 

The leathery look extends to 

the steering wheel and gear lever 

knob. The Limited has a colour 

head-up display and satellite 

navigation with SUNA Traffic 

Channel, rear privacy glass and 

an additional USB charging port. 

While larger than the Yaris 

hatch, the cabin still feels snug 

and taller back seat passengers 

will lament the lack of rear 

legroom as they rest their chin 

on their knees. This is tolerable 

for short around town trips, 

which to be fair is vehicle is built 

for, but not a fun place for the 

longer legged on journeys of 

longer duration. 

This is another Toyota model 

that benefits from the company’s 

acclaimed Safety Sense systems 

and advanced driver assistance 

functions. 

These help drivers avoid a 

wide range of common crash 

risks using driver information, 

early warnings, and if needed, 

automatic braking and steering 

intervention. 

Standard is a Pre-Collision 

System with autonomous 

emergency braking, blind spot 

monitor, lane tracing assist, 

all-speed dynamic radar cruise 

control, eight airbags, and 

automatic high-beam on and 

off, plus a reversing camera 

with dynamic guidelines, 

with the Limited spec adding 

a panoramic view monitor 

providing a surround view of the 

vehicle. 

Like its smaller hatch sibling, 

the Cross has the same excellent 

design qualities, where everything 

works as one to meet the needs of 

both the driver and passengers. 

The ride and handling 

exemplifies this, proving neat, 

tidy and hardly putting a foot 

out of place. The suspension is 

balanced and nimble and when 

its mettle is tested over twisty 

terrain. 

Its extra height and ground 

clearance means more body roll 

if you quicken the pace through 

tight corners, and is an area 

where the lower-slung hatch has 

an edge. 

The steering could do with 

more road feel, although the 

weighting is right on-point, 

making both test vehicles easy to 

park in even the most confined 

parking spaces.

What to ask a real estate agent 

Selling a home is a big life decision, both 

financially and emotionally. The journey 

can be a roller coaster, which is why 

finding a licensed real estate agent you feel 

comfortable with is so important. 

“Remember, you’re looking for the 

person who you’re going to trust to sell 

what’s likely to be your biggest asset. Their 

success (or failure) will have a marked 

impact on your new life plan,” says the Real 

Estate Authority (REA). 

New Zealand has about 15,000 real estate 

agents who help people navigate big-deal 

transactions every day. 

“The trick is to find the one that will be 

best for your situation,” he says. 

You need someone who understands 

what it takes to sell a property like yours 

and a proven track record to show for it. 

You also need to feel comfortable with 

them personally – if you don’t find them 

pleasant to deal with then buyers may not 

enjoy the experience either. 

If you’re not sure how to get the ball 

rolling, ask the agent the following 

questions: 

- What do you know about my 

neighbourhood? How are sales in this area 

and who is buying? 

- Do you work independently or with 

other agents? 

- What kind of advertising or marketing 

do you use – and which ones will work for 

my property? What extra marketing costs 

will I have to pay? 

- What are your commission rates? Are 

you open to negotiation? 

- Do you have testimonials or references 

from people whose properties you have 

sold in the last three months? 

- What do you recommend I do to 

prepare my home for sale? 

- Why should I hire you? 

Asking these questions helps you form a 

picture of the agent’s experience, 

knowledge and how they structure their 

business. 

Remember that you can negotiate on 

the marketing costs and commission – 

don’t be afraid to ask the agents if they 

are interested in an incentive-based 

commission, where they will earn more 

commission if they sell your property 

above a certain price. 

Once you’ve found the agent you think 

you’d like to work with, check them out 

on the Real Estate Authority’s (REA) 

online public register, which will tell you 

if the agent holds a current licence. This is 

important because it’s illegal to carry out 

real estate agency work without a licence 

and if you deal with an unlicensed person 

the REA will be unable to help you if things 

go wrong. 

When you’ve decided on an agent, the 

terms and conditions of your contract will 

be set out in an agency agreement that 

you both sign. This is a legal document, 

so make sure you get advice from a lawyer 

and that you understand your rights and

Choose the right plants 

It’s tempting to buy plants you love 

the look of. However, selecting the 

right plants for a successful indoor 

garden is essential. Some great choices 

for beginners include the Snake Plant, 

Spider Plant, Philodendron, Ficus, 

Calathea, Syngonium, and Anthurium. 

These plants are low-maintenance and 

can adapt to various light conditions. 

For a burst of colour, consider African 

Violets, Fittonias, or Phalaenopsis-Moth 

Orchids. 

Light and placement 

Most indoor plants prefer bright, 

indirect light, so place them near 

windows that receive filtered sunlight. 

However, not all plants thrive under 

bright light. Understanding what plants 

will suit your home’s light conditions 

is key to keeping your plants healthy. 

Plants that thrive in low-lit areas are 

Dracaena, ZZ Plant, Peace Lily (avoid if 

you have pets), and Maidenhair ferns,

Care and maintenance 

Provide proper care and maintenance 

to keep your indoor plants healthy and 

thriving. Don’t be tempted to over-water

watering needs, so check out each plant’s 

requirements. Ensure plant pots have 

drainage holes and allow soil to dry out 

between waterings. To check if the soil is 

dry, stick your finger into the soil to see 

if it is damp. Also, feed your plant with 

an appropriate fertiliser and regularly 

dust plant leaves, allowing sunlight to 

enter and photosynthesising to occur.

Apart from plants, stylish and

complement your décor. Also, consider 

using wall-mounted shelves, decorative 

plant stands, hanging plants, or wallmounted 

shelves to save space, with
