Helping dogs to find 

their fur-ever home 

GIVING LOVING pooches a 

second chance at life is the goal 

for staff at the city council animal 

shelter. 

So far this year, the shelter’s 

animal management team has 

rehomed 45 dogs. 

Greyhounds, bull breeds, 

beardies and pugs are just the 

beginning when it comes to the 

321 dogs that have spent time at 

the shelter this year. 

Rosco, an 11-month-old staffy 

cross, spent 26 days at the shelter 

before he was adopted into his 

new family in August. 

New owner Kylie said Rosco is 

just what was missing from her 

home after recently losing their 

older dog. 

“Putting my old boy to sleep 

was the hardest thing I have ever 

had to do,” she said. 

“But Rosco is currently helping

Huntaway cross Maya became 

the fifth member of one lucky 

family after she was adopted by 

new owners Hannah and Brad 

earlier this year. 

“We are all enjoying her 

company so much and she 

fits perfectly into our family,” 

Hannah said. 

“Maya is happy, energetic, very 

loving and healthy. We adore her, 

especially the two children.” 

Maya’s new routine sees her 

walking with the kids to school, 

spending some time playing and 

snoozing in the afternoon before 

it’s time to collect the kids at the 

end of the school day. 

Council animal services 

manager Lionel Bridger said the 

animal management team go 

above and beyond to get as many 

dogs as possible adopted into new 

loving homes. 

“Whether they’re adopted 

directly from the shelter, or if 

they need a little extra help from 

rescues like Dog Watch and Bull 

Breed Rescue, we want to get 

these pups rehomed and we want 

to get it right,” Bridger said. 

The animal shelter is at capacity 

for the number of dogs up for 

adoption and are desperately 

looking to rehome those they 

currently have.

More traffic 

congestion 

looms for 

motorists 

A MAJOR upgrade of wastewater 

pipes is scheduled to start early 

this month on Clyde, Creyke and 

Maidstone roads. 

The upgrade is being carried out 

in three stages and is scheduled for 

completion in mid-2026. 

Said city council head of three 

waters Gavin Hutchison: “We are 

installing new, bigger pipes to help 

meet increasing demands on our 

wastewater network generated by 

our growing city. 

“We understand 

this community 

has already been 

disrupted in 

recent months by 

other infrastructure 

and roading 

works happening 

in the area and 

apologise for these

further necessary disruptions.’’ 

First stage works, which are 

scheduled until December 2025, 

include pumping water from 

below the ground to allow for 

trenching and excavation works, 

the installation of new pipes and 

road sealing. 

During this time, one-way traffic 

and detours will be in place, as 

well as a 30km/h speed limit. 

The second stage of the upgrade 

will affect the east end of Maidstone 

Rd, with work also planned 

on Creyke Rd beside the Clyde Rd 

intersection. This is scheduled to 

start in August next year. 

The third stage will happen in 

early 2026 on Maidstone Rd, at 

the western end between Ilam and 

Waimairi roads.

Quake-hit home tops auction expectations 

A MERIVALE property for sale 

in “as is, where is” condition 

proved a hit with developers 

looking to “detonate and start 

again” when it sold at auction 

recently. 

The three-bedroom home 

on Clissold St was snapped up 

for close to $2 million – much 

more than the property’s elderly 

owners were expecting. 

The auction attracted about 

40 people, 10 of whom were 

bidders, OneRoof reported. 

The property had been damaged 

in the 2011 earthquake, 

with Harcourts auctioneer Mark 

Morrison telling bidders “it 

might be the case of detonate 

and start again”. 

The vendors had brought the 

auction forward after accepting 

an offer of $1.5m. 

Listing agent Jayne Martin 

said competition for the 

property was “robust”, with two 

buyers going at it like “hammer 

and tongs” at the end. 

The house, which sits on a flat 

776 sq m section, was scooped 

up by a developer for $1.91m 

– $110,00 above the RV and 

$660,000 more than what the 

vendors paid for it in 2008. 

Martin told OneRoof the 

auction showed developers were 

on the hunt for well-located 

properties. 

“My phone did not stop 

ringing on that property. For it 

to go $410,000 over the (reserve) 

was just phenomenal.” 

She said the buyer planned 

to demolish the house and 

would likely replace it with 

townhouses. 

The property isn’t the only 

“as is, where is” house to hit the 

market in Merivale. 

A 1930s cottage in neighbouring 

Rochdale St is due to be sold 

at auction on September 11, and 

is likely to attract some of the 

same bidders. 

Falling interest rates appear to 

have spurred buyers into action. 

Another “as is, where is” 

property on a large 829 sq m 

section on Circuit St also felt the 

heat at Harcourts Gold’s auction 

room. 

Bidding opened at $800,000 

and quickly escalated to $1.42m 

before the hammer came down.

were about five interested parties 

at the auction, but only two

had been built after the earthquakes, 

had a pool, and was in a 

good school zone. 

“Burnside High and Christchurch 

boys and girls – I call it the 

golden triangle of school zones.” 

Morrison told OneRoof he had 

noticed a bit more competition 

among buyers, with seven of the 

14 auctions held recently at the 

Harcourts Gold auction room 

having two or more bidders.

competition. 

The National Photojournalism 

Competition aimed to promote 

photojournalism and raise funds 

for the club. 

Entries were open to anyone 

in New Zealand or anyone 

anywhere who is a member of 

the Photographic Society of New 

Zealand or an affiliated club. 

There were two sections in the 

competition. 

The winner of the sport and 

action photography section 

received the Ted Walker 

Trophy and the winner of the 

street photography and social 

commentary section took home 

the Maree Turner Trophy.

“I was lucky enough to be 

taking photos at the South 

Island Masters Games and the 

swimming heats were one of my

“The butterfly is perfect for 

action shots and finding the best 

swimmer in the practice session, 

I was ready and waiting when she 

started her heat. 

“You have to be ready at the 

start when the swimmer first 

surfaces to get that nice mirror 

effect so important to the overall 

image. 

“The rest is timing and 

knowing what camera settings 

work for the shot. Sounds easy 

but the light can be very tricky 

too. 

“It is true that the better the 

athlete the better the shot so 

picking the right swimmer is the 

first step to a great shot.”

the two of them, the little boy 

obviously adored his Dad and just 

wanted to do everything that he 

did!”

her into the helicopter to transport

Whitebaiters urged 

to leave no trace 

WHITEBAITERS in the 

Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor are 

urged to take a ‘leave no trace’ 

approach by city council rangers, 

after environmental damage 

and illegal camping in previous 

seasons. 

Whitebait season opened on 

Sunday and closes on October 30. 

City council head of parks 

Rupert Bool said the OARC 

is a popular location for 

whitebaiting, with many families 

trolleying their equipment into 

their favourite spots during the 

weekends. 

He said whitebaiters and the 

public were generally positive 

towards city council initiatives to 

make the area safe for everyone. 

“We are having lots of great 

conversations with the public 

and they have been very receptive 

to us looking to improve the 

whitebait habitat and ensuring 

the environment is being cared 

for.” 

Bool said in recent seasons 

the ranger team has also seen 

damage to the environment, and 

conflict between groups due to a 

small number of whitebaiters. 

He said the damage often occurs 

from whitebaiters trampling 

or digging out areas to stand 

on or by building structures at 

the water’s edge, which kills the 

vegetation and increases bank 

erosion. 

Damaging the environment 

and leaving property in the park 

overnight breaches the Parks and 

Reserves Bylaw (2016). Property 

that breaches the bylaw can be 

seized or removed by city council 

with or without notice, Bool said. 

In previous seasons, 

whitebaiters have also set up 

camps on the old roads in the 

OARC or adjacent areas, which 

has attracted freedom campers 

to the area. This has led to 

vandalism, cars being burnt out 

on the street (above), and litter 

dispersing into the area. 

“We want to remind whitebaiters 

to enjoy themselves within 

the parameters of the bylaws that 

are in place to ensure sustainable 

use of parks. We are keen for 

a positive whitebait season for 

everyone,” said Bool. 

He also said ongoing 

construction of the City to Sea 

Pathway has seen areas of the 

OARC cordoned off due to 

earthworking and road removal. 

These areas are active work sites 

and unauthorised entry isn’t 

permitted. 

Slow start to season 

on the Avon River

AS EAGER whitebaiters flock to 

rivers across the city, the small 

freshwater fish seem to have gone 

into hiding. 

Along the Avon River on 

Monday, the sun was out but the 

whitebait were not. 

Dallington whitebaiter 

Graham Livingstone has been 

fishing for the tiny delicacies 

for about 40 years. He said it is 

mostly a waiting game. 

“I haven’t seen bugger all. I got 

a wee bit in my bucket, but not 

much. That was earlier on today.” 

Other whitebaiters along the 

Avon River agreed it has been a 

very slow start to the season. 

Whitebaiter Allan Parkhill 

said it was the worst start to the 

season he has seen. 

“Not very good this year. 

There’s a lot of dark ones in 

amongst them . . . they’ve been in 

the water a while.” 

Parkhill said most whitebaiters 

fully support the city council’s 

‘leave no trace’ stance. 

“Yeah, as it should be. 

Shouldn’t have to leave a mess 

around for some other bugger,” 

he said.

Give your deck a treat 

Before you start staining, you need 

to prep the surface of the deck. 

First treat for moss and mould using 

Resene Moss & Mould Killer. If left 

untreated, moss, mould and fungi 

can damage timber and discolour 

the stain. Spray and allow it to soak 

into the timber for 48 hours to kill 

all mould spores before scrubbing 

Before 

and rinsing clean. Once the moss 

has been treated, clean the deck 

using Resene Timber & Deck Wash 

using a short-bristled brush before 

rinsing with water. Remember, 

because stains are semi-transparent, 

the cleaner the timber is at the 

beginning, the better the end result. 

Deck staining tips and tricks 

• UV light, rain and the weather are 

harsh on decks. Property maintained 

decks will last longer than decks that 

are left uncoated. It’s far easier to 

restain or repaint your deck than it 

is to replace it completely. 

• Stains are transparent and the 

colour will vary depending on the 

type of timber and the number of 

coats of stain applied. 

• The second coat of stain will be 

easier to apply than the first and the 

stain will spread easily. Lay off the 

second coat carefully and wipe away 

excess stain using a clean, dry cloth 

to avoid lap marks or drips. 

• You can apply different stain colours 

over each other but the old stain 

colour will affect how the new stain 

colour looks. It’s best to test on an 

inconspicuous area first. 

• Decks stained in Resene Woodsman 

typically require maintenance every 

two to three summers. Keep any 

leftover stain in a cool, dark place 

and write the name of the colour you 

used and where you used it on the lid 

with a marker pen so you can grab 

the right container when you want to 

apply another coat in the future. 

Stain and able 

When staining a deck, a good 

result comes down to using the 

right Resene products and tools 

and planning your approach (so 

you avoid walking over your stain 

or staining yourself into a corner). 

First use a paintbrush to apply the 

stain to any fiddly or hard to reach 

areas such as the sides of the deck 

or steps. For the flat surfaces of the 

deck, use a PAL Deckmaster Brush 

or lambswool applicator pad to 

apply the stain using long strokes 

down the length of the planks, 

following the grain of the timber. In 

hot weather, stains can dry quickly. 

To avoid lap marks try to maintain 

a ‘wet edge’ so your stain doesn’t 

dry out before the next stroke is 

applied. To do this, it’s best to work 

in small sections. The first coat of 

stain should saturate the timber, 

but excess puddles of stain can be 

wiped away using a clean, dry 

cloth. Allow the first coat to dry 

before applying a second coat. 

• Old or rough sawn timber will soak 

up more stain than smooth timber, so 

you may need to apply more stain. 

• For dark-coloured stains, 

Resene CoolColour formulas are 

recommended. Resene CoolColours 

contain special heat-reflective 

technology designed to reflect more 

of the sun’s energy than standard 

colours. This will help your deck 

stay cooler to touch and reduce the 

risk of heat related damage. 

• Avoid water blasting your deck. 

This can damage the timber, 

leading to splinters and a need to 

replace it faster. 

• If you wish to create flow between 

your indoor and outdoor spaces 

by using the same flooring, Resene 

Woodsman exterior colours can be 

created as interior Resene Colorwood 

colours. Ask your local Resene 

ColorShop to tint the formula for you. 

• Apply Resene Deep Clean every 

6-12 months to preserve your deck.

Bright organic reds and yellows 

are more vulnerable to fading 

caused by UV radiation, but a

your home over winter 

and water blasting is 

not the answer for 

joinery and timber 

weatherboards. Treat the 

mould first with Resene Moss & 

Mould Killer. Then wash with 

Resene Paint Prep and 

Housewash or Resene Bio- 

Cleaner – both are excellent 

products for getting surfaces 

ready for painting. Dilute with 

the right amount of water, wash, 

then rinse with clean water. 

Beat the heat 

For you and your paint, overcast 

conditions are best and spring’s 

moderate temperatures are

ideal, as the cold can 

also adversely affect your 

finish. But if a cloudless 

and unexpectedly 

scorching day stretches 

out ahead of you, a good 

plan of attack is to start 

early and work your way 

around the building, 

keeping ahead of the sun 

as you go. Take a break during 

the hottest part of the day, for 

the sake of your finish as well as 

your health, or use that time to 

prep shaded areas, for example 

sanding or priming surfaces. 

Use protection 

Use shade protection where you 

can. A gazebo or even just a 

large sun umbrella will help 

keep you and your Resene 

products cool, while allowing 

you to continue painting even in 

the heat of the day.

Consider the tone 

Keep in mind that if the surface 

you’re working on is dark, it will 

get hotter in the sun than light 

coloured areas. With this in mind, 

it is a good idea to try to do your 

darker areas when they are in 

the shade and are cooler. And if 

you do have to paint in direct 

sun, try to paint the darker 

areas first before they heat up. 

If darker areas are already 

very warm to touch then give 

them time to cool down and 

work on lighter coloured areas 

first. If you find your paint is 

drying too fast, which can be a 

common problem during hot 

weather, Resene Paint Expert 

Jay Sharples suggests lightly 

pre-dampening your surface 

with water. If you are painting a 

light colour, make sure you wear 

sunglasses, as light colours can 

be glary in the sunlight. 

Stay fresh 

Avoid leaving your main paint tin 

in direct sunlight. On very hot 

days, Jay suggests leaving your 

main can of Resene paint indoors 

and just pouring the paint you 

need for each painting session 

into a Resene paint pot and 

painting from that. To save time 

and washing up, wrap your 

brushes, roller and roller tray in 

reusable plastic bags or wrap 

to keep them fresh during breaks 

or overnight. 

When taking a break, wrap your 

paintbrush or roller in reusable plastic 

wrap to ensure it doesn’t dry out.

Try an additive 

Resene Hot Weather Additive 

is another product that’ll help 

combat the effects of high 

temperatures on your finish – 

add it to your Resene waterborne 

paint to slow down the drying 

process and give a longer wet 

edge. “Resene Hot Weather 

Additive really helps with the 

flow of the paint for a great, 

professional finish.” Avoid over 

working or over spreading the 

paint as this will make it dry 

faster and is more likely to lead 

to a streaky or patchy finish. 

If you’re painting trim and 

joinery with Resene Lustacryl 

waterborne enamel and 

are finding your painting 

technique isn’t getting the 

smooth finish you are after, 

you can use Resene Brushing 

Additive to reduce brush 

marking and produce a 

smoother finish on trim 

and joinery. 

Stay cool 

If you are planning to paint a 

dark colour and your home’s 

cladding already feels too hot 

in summer, consider choosing a 

Resene CoolColour. A Resene 

CoolColour is designed to reflect 

much more of the sun’s energy 

than a standard colour keeping 

your paint and cladding cooler. 

Take care of yourself 

Remember to pace yourself when 

you’re tackling a large project 

outside. Break the project into 

smaller manageable chunks, 

wear sun protection – sunblock, 

sunglasses, a hat and long 

sleeves, and take regular breaks. 

It’s also crucial to stay hydrated, 

so remember to fill up your water 

bottle regularly. If you find the 

middle part of the day is too hot 

to paint, use the time to start on 

prep for another project.

Is your insulation 

up to scratch? 

As we (finally) creep closer 

to summer, insulation may be 

the furthest thing from your 

mind – but a properly insulated 

house stays cooler for longer in 

summer and warmer for longer in 

winter. It can also save you money 

on your energy bills, and who 

doesn’t want that? 

When it comes to insulating your 

home, the first priority should be 

your ceiling, then underfloor and 

lastly your walls. 

For older homes, you may already 

have insulation, but it’s a good 

idea to check it hasn’t moved or 

been damaged. 

You may need to top up your 

ceiling insulation if it is under 

12cm thick; doesn’t cover your 

whole ceiling; or has gaps or 

bare spots. 

If your existing insulation is wet, 

damp or has been damaged by 

pests then you should remove it

Plea to get rid of dangerous items safely 

THE CITY council’s resource 

recovery team is asking 

residents to dispose of 

hazardous items correctly to 

keep staff and the community 

safe after an increase in fires in 

kerbside collection trucks and 

processing facilities this year. 

There have been 42 fires 

across the collection and 

processing facilities since 2020, 

including eight 

so far this year. 

Council 

contractors 

have also 

been finding 

increasing 

numbers of 

hazardous items 

like batteries 

and gas bottles

“This year we’ve had six fires 

at the EcoDrop transfer stations, 

one at the recycling facility 

and one recycling truck fire – 

possibly started by batteries,” 

said council resource recovery 

manager Dr Alec McNeil. 

“It’s an added risk when a gas 

bottle is thrown into the mix, 

as these can explode when a fire 

starts.” 

A total of 2230 gas bottles 

were removed from loads 

delivered to the EcoSort 

recycling facility in the 2023/24 

period – a 471 per cent increase 

on the previous year. 

The gas bottles include LPG, 

helium, soda stream bottles, 

butane canisters and fire 

extinguishers. 

There has also been an 

increase in nitrous oxide cans 

appearing in the form of large 

cream canisters used by professional 

caterers. 

“When a driver takes a gas 

bottle on-board in their kerbside 

collection, it poses such a high 

risk that they immediately need 

to take the load to the EcoSort 

recycling facility, interrupting 

and delaying their collection 

route,” McNeil said. 

If a fire starts in a collection 

truck en route, the truck must 

dump the entire load on the 

nearest clear space, likely the 

street, for Fire and Emergency 

NZ to respond to. 

“Neither batteries or gas 

bottles should be placed in your 

rubbish or recycling bin. When 

mixed together they can pose a

The perfect pairing for lunchtime 

There’s nothing like a 

light loaf and poached 

pears served with crème 

fraîche for a delightful 

weekend lunch, Nigel 

Slater reports 

Pears with fruit jelly 

Pears make good desserts. I prefer 

a chubby Doyenne du Comice if 

possible, but long, thin conference 

pears are good, too. You need to 

rub them generously with lemon 

juice after peeling, to stop them 

going brown, and I add a little 

lemon juice to the cooking syrup, 

too. It helps. 

Ingredients 

Serves 3 

100g caster sugar, plus a little for 

later 

1 litre water 

3 pears 

juice of 1 lemon 

6 Tbsp fruit jelly or jam 

To serve: 

6 Tbsp crème fraîche 

Method 

• Bring the sugar and water to the 

boil in a large, deep-sided pan – I 

use one about 28cm in diameter. 

• Peel the pears and cut them in 

half, rubbing them with a little 

lemon juice as you go. 

• Using a teaspoon, remove 

the pips and core. Squeeze the 

remaining lemon juice into 

the sugar syrup, add the pears 

and lower the temperature to a 

simmer. 

• Let the pears cook for 15-20 

minutes or so until they are tender 

to the point of a knife and almost 

translucent. Check their progress 

regularly – they should be soft, but 

still retain their shape. 

• Heat an overhead (oven) grill. 

• Remove the pears with a 

draining spoon and let them dry 

for a few minutes. Transfer to 

a grill pan, cut side uppermost. 

Dust each with caster sugar.

• Place under the heat, watching 

carefully, and let the pears brown 

a little. 

• Serve the pear halves in shallow 

dishes, two per person with 

spoonfuls of fruit jelly and creme 

fraiche. 

Overnight honey and 

rosemary bread with 

goat’s cheese 

The dough needs about eight 

hours in the fridge. You can speed 

things up by proving it in a warm 

room for about two hours, though 

it may not quite have the same 

airy texture. 

Ingredients 

Makes 1 large loaf 

400ml warm water 

2 tsp easy-bake dried yeast 

1 tsp sea salt 

1 Tbsp honey, plus a little for 

drizzling 

500g strong white bread flour 

4 Tbsp olive oil 

75g dried figs 

1 Tbsp rosemary , plus a little to 

finish 

50g dried cherries 

50g golden raisins 

olive oil and sea salt flakes to 

finish 

250g goat’s cheese 

Method 

• In a large bowl mix together the 

water and yeast, salt and honey. 

Stir in the flour either by hand or 

with a wooden spoon. 

• Pour in 2 tablespoons of the 

olive oil, then mix to a soft 

dough. • Cover the bowl with a 

clean tea towel and refrigerate 

overnight. 

• Next day, when the dough has 

risen somewhat, finely chop the 

rosemary leaves. 

• Slice the figs thinly – I cut each 

into about 4 slices – then mix 

with the rosemary, cherries and 

raisins and the remaining oil. 

• Knead the fruit and rosemary 

into the dough, then transfer to 

a lightly oiled shallow baking tin 

approximately 30cm x 20cm. 

• Push the dough out towards the 

edges with your fist. It will swell 

to fit during proving. Cover the 

tin with a cloth and place in a 

warm place for a good hour, until 

it has risen to twice its size. 

• Preheat the oven to 220°C. 

Using your finger, push several 

hollows deep into the dough and 

bake for 25-30 minutes until 

golden and springy to the touch. 

• Remove from the oven, trickle 

with olive oil and scatter with sea 

salt. 

• To make the toast, cut 4 thick 

slices from the loaf. Get an 

overhead (oven) grill hot. Thickly 

slice 250g of goat’s cheese log into 

rounds. 

• Divide the cheese on top of the 

4 slices of bread. Roughly chop a 

little rosemary and scatter over 

the cheese. Trickle some honey 

over each one and then place 

under the grill until the cheese 

has softened.
