Removal truck 2 metres from disaster
One very close call
• By Dylan Smits
THE DRIVER of this truck had
a miraculous escape when his
vehicle came within two metres of
plummeting off Clifton Hill.
The truck crashed through
a fence as it was descending
Galilee Lane, before coming to a
much-needed stop on a private
driveway – saved by a parked
campervan it struck. Otherwise it
could have careered over the edge
and down 200m to the bottom,
potentially striking houses on the
way down.
The householder who owned
the campervan told Bay Harbour
News “it could have been a lot
worse”.
Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade
chief fire officer Daryl Sayer said
the driver was “extremely lucky”.
The brigade attended the incident.
“It was pretty concerning. If it
hadn’t come to a stop as it did, it
would have fallen much further.”
The Moving Company Ltd
would not talk to Bay Harbour
News yesterday about the incident,
or say how its driver was. He was
taken to hospital with moderate
injuries. Police are investigating.
The fire brigade posted the
photos of the incident to its
Facebook page, blurring out the
name of the transport company.
“It was pretty
concerning. If it hadn’t
come to a stop as
it did, it would have
fallen much further.”
– Daryl Sayer, Sumner
Volunteer Fire Brigade
chief fire officer

Golden girl making the most
• By Sam Coughlan
DOUBLE OLYMPIC gold
medallist Ellesse Andrews is
back in Mt Pleasant visiting her
parents and looking forward to
an extended period of rest and
relaxation.
Andrews, 24, hasn’t lived
in Christchurch since she was
six, when the family moved to
Wanaka.
She has been based in
Cambridge since she was 16, after
first moving when father Jon
Andrews got a coaching job with
Cycling NZ.
After finishing school, Andrews
joined Cycling NZ’s Cambridgebased
elite programme full-time.
She won gold in the keirin and
individual sprint at Paris last
month, to go with a silver medal
in the team sprint.
But after spending time
travelling around Europe after
the Olympics, first with partner
Josh Toa, a rowing coach at
Cambridge High School, and later
with friends, Andrews is excited
to be back in New Zealand.
“I’m really looking forward to
being down. I feel like when I’m
home or where my family is, I can
relax,” she said.
“The thing with the holiday,
and afterwards, is that I was
moving around all over the show
and I was still travelling. I haven’t
had many days where I’ve just
been able to sit down and really
not do much at all.”
She’s spending three weeks in
the South Island, staying with
her parents in Mt Pleasant and
is planning to visit friends in
Wanaka.
“I really like to escape from the
chaos of everything, make the
most of my time and be able to
get outside and do things that I
want to do that I don’t normally
get to do,” she said.
“With cycling, we don’t really
want to get out there and be
walking a million miles and
always travelling, so I think now’s
the time where I can really make
the most of how beautiful our
little region and our country is.”
Andrews isn’t going to be
back into her high-performance
training until October in
preparation for her next event
– the UCI Track Champions
League in Europe, which spans
three weekends, starting on
of time away from the track
“I do really enjoy being in
routine,” she said.
“So I am looking forward to
being back, but also staying in the
present moment now and enjoying
this time while I have it.”
It’s impossible to be completely
disconnected from cycling – her
father Jon doubles as her coach, a
role he’s filled since last September
when Cycling NZ asked him to
be a part of its high-performance
programme.
But Andrews said there’s no
problem keeping their professional
and personal lives separate.
“Because we don’t live together,
we can make that time where we
spend time together as a father
and daughter quite deliberate and
then the professional time is quite
deliberate as well.”
They try to keep a ‘no cycling
talk’ rule when they’re together as
family.
“It’s easy to let all of that slip in,
like if we were at a family dinner
or something, but I think we are
conscious of that. I wouldn’t want
either of us to be talking about
work all the time, and it’s nice to
still be able to connect to the family
outside that,” Andrews said.
“And then on the other side of
things, no family talk at work as
well.”
Said Jon: “Ellesse is very strict on
that, no hugs at work.”
Outside cycling, Andrews is
studying part-time towards a
Bachelor of Communications at
Waikato University, majoring in
public relations.
“That’s quite fun to do on the
side,” she said.
“I actually really enjoy studying,
and I’ve done none of it this year
because I had a concussion at
the start of the year and then the
games the second half of the year.
So I’ll be looking to do summer
school.”
While some cyclists love
coaching, Andrews has never
caught that bug – instead wanting
to get into management.
“That’s one of the potential
pathways for the future.
“And one of the reasons why I
did communications and PR was,
I guess, to gain an understanding
of some of those skills that are
required for those roles.
“I would enjoy more
management and guidance rather
than coaching or prescribing a
programme.”
Grid - The life and times of First World War
fighter ace Keith Caldwell by Adam Claasen
This gripping biography of Air Commodore Keith
‘Grid’ Caldwell CBE, MC, DFC & bar, Croix de Guerre,
tells the story of his remarkable exploits during the
First World War. Flying single-seat fighters against
best of the German air force, including the Red
Baron’s Flying Circus and airmen such as Werner
Voss, Caldwell accumulated 26 victories in aerial
combat. Over his illustrious career he flew with
numerous ‘stars’ of the British air service, including
Albert Ball, Billy Bishop and Mick Mannock. In the
last year of the war, aged only 22, he was given
command of the new 74 Squadron. Under his
leadership the ‘Tigers’ become one of the war’s most
feared and revered units. Grid details Caldwell’s
journey from early flight training in Auckland to
his death-defying sorties over enemy lines on the
Western Front. It also details his pivotal role in
reinvigorating interest in the airmen of WWI during
the 1960s and 1970s. Caldwell was a hero, a leader,
and a man of great courage by any measure.
Concert helps schoolhouse restoration
TWO VISITING choristers from
England performed as part of a
classical concert at Rapaki Marae,
to raise money for the restoration
of the old Rapaki schoolhouse.
The afternoon included a powhiri,
high tea and a performance
by The Canterbury Association
Oxfords Project.
The vocal quartet consisted
of James Parmeter and George
Blundell (from Christ Church,
Oxford) and Adrian Lowe
and Kimberley Wood (from
Christchurch).
More than 70 people attended
the concert on August 24, raising
$2658 for the old school restoration.
The schoolhouse is a rare example
of a 19th-century building
within a Ngāi Tahu settlement.
Built in the 1870s, it was part
of a network of village primary
schools established by the Native
School Department to provide education
for children in Ngāi Tahu
communities.
The restoration has involved significant
repairs, seismic strengthening,
and moving the building
to a less erosion-prone site on the
same section.
Said Te Rūnanga o Ngāti
Wheke kaumātua Donald Couch:
“Our old schoolhouse has served
us for 150 years, and with this
restoration, it will serve us and
the community for another 150
years.”
Attending the concert were
Banks Peninsula MP Vanessa
Weenink, former Port Hills MP
Ruth Dyson, and the Anglican
Bishop of Christchurch, Dr Peter
Carrell. HMNZS Canterbury
Commander Bronwyn Heslop
and 12 of her crew and Reserve
Forces director Clive Holmes
also went along. The concert was
organised by Nuk and Christine
Kurako, Dr Te Maire Tau, Gabrielle
Huria and Haydn Rawstron.
Said Rawstron: “The
Canterbury Association
endowment at Christ Church,
Oxford, pays for the Oxfords
Project and in turn produces this
vocal quartet.”
He paid tribute to the late Mary
Weston, whose patronage had
paid for project visits.
4000km fundraiser finishes today
• By Isabella Adams
RENÉ HEYDE began cycling
across Australia four weeks ago.
Today the Christchurch
70-year-old is scheduled to finish
– and he’s ready to get back to
doing all of the little things you
take for granted.
Heyde took on the challenge
of cycling almost 4000km from
Perth to Geelong to fundraise for
charity Cholmondeley Children’s
Centre, near Governors Bay.
He spent parts of his childhood
at the children’s home, and
wanted to do something to pay
them back.
He began his journey in Perth
on August 1, and is expected
to arrive in Geelong, near Melbourne,
today.
As of Tuesday, he has raised
$17,900 for Cholmondeley
through a Givealittle page.
Heyde said the donations have
motivated him during his ride.
“I get an email from each
donation, so when I start I
always check my emails and I
reply to every one of them on the
Givealittle page.
“That is a hell of a lot of motivation
for me, just to see that I’ve
got support from people and I’m
not on this journey on my own.”
Heyde has averaged 109km a
day, and tries to cycle six to seven
hours.
MAN ON A MISSION: René Heyde has averaged 109km a day, cycling across Australia to raise money for Cholmondeley.
He competed in track cycling
in the ‘70s, most significantly
winning bronze in the team
pursuit at the 1974 Christchurch
Commonwealth Games.
Heyde said it has been difficult
taking the competitiveness out
of him when he’s on the bike, but
he tries to take 10-minute breaks
every few hours to have a snack
and a walk around.
“I’m a man on a mission really,
I’m at the end of it now but when
you start off you’ve got all those
thousands of kilometres . . . you
just want to keep your wheels
turning and get them behind
you.”
The time he gets under way
each day depends on the wind,
a factor he said has made his
journey a bit more difficult.
“We’ve had horrendous gale
force winds that did quite a lot of
damage.
Victorians have said they’ve
never known winds like it.”
As he gets closer to the finish
line, Heyde can’t believe he’s
almost made it.
“When I look back at when
I started, it’s just so many
kilometres away and I look at
a map and look back at those
towns I think, bloody hell, I’ve
manpowered my way across this
bloody big country. I find that
awesome.”
Heyde is looking forward to
getting back to his normal life.
“I’m looking forward to
sleeping in a bed and being able
to stretch my legs out, instead
of being in a sleeping bag all the
time.
“I’ve been eating freeze-dried
meals most nights, and just
muesli every morning with a
bit of fruit. So even a bit of toast
would be good. I haven’t had that
for a month. Just simple little
things that you’re used to.”
a second chance at life is the
goal for staff at the city council
animal shelter.
So far this year, the shelter’s
animal management team has
rehomed 45 dogs.
Greyhounds, bull breeds,
beardies and pugs are just the
beginning when it comes to the
321 dogs that have spent time at
the shelter this year.
Rosco, an 11-month-old staffy
cross, spent 26 days at the shelter
before he was adopted into his
new family in August.
New owner Kylie said Rosco is
just what was missing from her
home after recently losing their
older dog.
“Putting my old boy to sleep
was the hardest thing I have ever
had to do,” she said.
HOME: Rosco, an 11-monthold
staffy cross, spent 26 days
at the shelter before he was
adopted into his new family.
“But Rosco is currently helping
that healing process just with his
extra cuddles. I am grateful we
found him and was able to give
him the home he deserves.”
Huntaway cross Maya became
the fifth member of one lucky
family after she was adopted by
new owners Hannah and Brad
earlier this year.
“We are all enjoying her
company so much and she fits
perfectly into our family,” Hannah
said.
“Maya is happy, energetic, very
loving and healthy. We adore her,
especially the two children.”
Maya’s new routine sees her
walking with the kids to school,
spending some time playing and
snoozing in the afternoon before
it’s time to collect the kids at the
end of the school day.
Council animal services
manager Lionel Bridger said the
animal management team go
above and beyond to get as many
dogs as possible adopted into
new loving homes.
“Whether they’re adopted
directly from the shelter, or if
they need a little extra help from
rescues like Dog Watch and Bull
Breed Rescue, we want to get
these pups rehomed and we want
to get it right,” Bridger said.
The animal shelter is at capacity
for the number of dogs up
for adoption and are desperately
looking to rehome those they
currently have.
If you’re after a new pooch,
please get in touch with the shelter
to help find these good boys
and girls new, loving homes.
Dogs available for adoption
are posted on the city council’s
Facebook page.
• You can contact the
shelter on 941-7048 or visit
at 10 Metro Pl, Bromley
CARING: The city council
animal shelter has rehomed
45 dogs this year, including
huntaway cross Maya, who
has found her forever family.
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
Completed Sumner Rd worth the wait
In the second and final
part of the series, JC Betts
details the long-awaited
construction of the
Sumner Rd, the crucial
link between port and
plains
“I HEARD A rush upstairs
and breathless shouting – ‘All
three ships are coming in! They
will be in in an hour!’ You
can imagine how quickly we
huddled on clothes and tore off
on the road over the Port Hills
to Lyttelton. We did that walk
of four miles in record time,”
wrote Katharine MacInnes in
Woman with the Iceberg Eyes:
Oriana F Wilson.
The day was April 15, 1904,
the writer quoted was Oriana
Wilson, who had been staying
on Scarborough Hill in Matuku
Takotako Sumner, awaiting the
return from Antarctica of the
Discovery expedition and her
husband Dr Edward Wilson.
In 1904, Evans Pass Rd
followed the same steep route
as it does today. Things were
different on the Ōhinehou
Lyttelton side – a tight and
steep zig-zag led down to a
comparatively flat but winding
road skirting the harbour.
In a book published to
celebrate Canterbury’s 50th
anniversary in 1900, CC Bowen
suggested building the road
along the “trotting gradient”(1
in 20) route originally surveyed
in 1849 – the benchmarks were
still visible on the hillside.
Editorials and correspondence
in the local newspapers
enthusiastically supported the
idea, but no progress was made
until 1913, when the Canterbury
Automobile Association and
the Lyttelton Borough Council
The Canterbury Mounted Regiment descending the Evans
Pass zigzag in September 1914, on its way to Lyttelton before
embarking for the European Front. PHOTO: Weekly Press
CPL – From Gordon Ogilvie’s The Port Hills of Christchurch,
Reed, Wellington, 1978
joined forces to raise funds.
It was noted that if the rail
tunnel were blocked, the
road was the only route in an
emergency. Another factor
was the extortionate charges
the railways demanded for
transporting goods through the
tunnel.
Luckily, the Minister of Public
Works J Fraser and local MP
James McCombs (husband
of New Zealand’s first female
MP, Elizabeth McCombs) were
supportive and the government
supplied about half the funding.
The rest was contributed
by the Christchurch City
Council, Lyttelton, Sumner
and Woolston Borough
Councils and the Automobile
Association.
Quay Complex, 22 December 1966. PHOTO: Te Ūaka
Seventy men started work in
1914, although some prospective
labourers took one look at the
worksite and went straight back
to town.
Whenever blasting was
being done, the existing road
was closed to avoid the danger
of rocks falling on the traffic
below.
The Lyttelton Gaol’s hard
labour gang contributed to the
work, as they had done with the
earlier road.
The Public Works Department
did not consider the road’s
construction to be urgent: “a
start had been made on it solely
for the purpose of relieving the
unemployment situation”. (The
Star, May 30, 1921).
Unemployed married men
were put to work on the Sumner
side, where the 6-to-1 gradient
was improved to 12-to-1.
In 1920, a “little industrial
upheaval” was reported in the
Lyttelton Times “due to the
refusal of white labourers to
work with Hindus”.
The Indians were redeployed,
but criticism came from Ben
C Pratt on July 6, under the
heading ‘Brotherhood of Man’.
“The moral is simply this,
that we English are arrant,
hypocritical humbugs.”
Finally, on August 21, 1929,
The Press reported that Lyttelton
Borough Council staff were
tar sealing the last section of
Sumner Rd.
Once it was in use, the old
route beside the harbour became
known as the Dump Rd
as the Lyttelton rubbish dump
was located in the gully behind
Gollans Bay.
The zig-zag was gradually
quarried away in the 1950s and
60s to construct Cashin Quay,
the new container port.
The 1964 road tunnel took
the pressure off Evans Pass, but
oversize and dangerous loads
still had to use it.
After the 2010-2011
earthquakes, the road was
closed for five years and all
traffic was forced to use Gebbies
or Dyers Pass roads.
It was worth the wait. The
reopened road is wider and
smoother, rockfall danger has
been mitigated and waterways
channelled, but it is still steep
on the Sumner side.
On the other hand, if you
need to test drive a car, it’s the
route every local person takes.
Cupra Born the EV world’s wild child
VIBRANCY, FLAIR, and
passion are deeply embedded
into the DNA of the Spanish
people, and its only automotive
manufacturer, the Volkswagenowned
Seat, have created an
electric car that is an automotive
expression of those qualities.
It’s the small to mid-size Cupra
Born, out of Seat’s performance
division and sits on Volkswagen’s
impressive MEB platform.
This compact Spanish
dynamo shares this platform
with the Skoda Enyaq and
Volkswagen ID.4 and its smaller
sibling the ID.3.
Of the three models spawned
from the MEB platform, the
Enyaq has been the strongest
seller here, but did have the
benefit of being the first of this
trio to hit our market.
The Cupra Born is the wild
child of the Seat family and
putting the brand on the map
here after years of living in the
shadow of its higher profile
Volkswagen and Skoda siblings.
A fun, affordable, quality
European performance hatch
brimming with personality,
the $74,990 Cupra Born EV is a
genuine X-factor vehicle, without
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
the usual mega price tag. It also
looks the part with LED daytime
running lights with unique
signature, full LED headlights,
and 19-inch Copper Typhoon
alloy wheels and an air intake
with copper frame.
Completing the picture are
aerodynamic side sills, floating
C-pillar and copper Cupra
badging. All this made the test
vehicle a bit of a people magnet
when it was parked up, with
most knowingly nodding their
approval.
Like the Volkswagen ID.4 we
previously road tested, the Cupra
Born first broke cover in 2022.
However, the handbrake was
applied to its arrival here as the
world, including the automotive
one, slowly emerged from the
Covid pandemic.
This included grappling with
supply chain issues that were
also an anchor on car industry
efforts to move up a gear and
meet full order books during the
pandemic. When people couldn’t
travel, many detoured their
travel budget into purchasing a
new car.
Like its cousins the ID.4 and
Enyaq, the Cupra Born stays the
EV distance more convincingly
than several of its peers, with
an achievable real world electric
range of 510km.
The test car had heaps of heft
from a beefy 77kWh battery
and an electric motor producing
150kW of power and 310Nm
of torque. But the Cupra has
E-Boost – a performance trick
that its ID.4 and Enyaq siblings
miss out on. This maximises
acceleration and enhances the
vehicle’s all-round performance.
The vehicle’s standard battery
is good for a healthy 150kW, but
with E-Boost standard on Born
models sold here, that figure
surges to 170kW, enough to
propel the car from 0-100 km/h
in a snappy 6.6 seconds. E-Boost
works its magic for a maximum
of 30 seconds to protect the
battery, but is accessible at any
time, depending on the charge
state of the battery and its
temperature.
There’s a genuine performance
edge to the Born with its rapid
acceleration both off the mark,
and once on the move, and boy
does it move!
With an undeniable energy
and urgency about this electric
power train, it’s one that
performance car enthusiast
drivers are Born to love.
Hardly surprising this vehicle
is quickly building a reputation
as one of the most drivable
Ratings out of 10: Performance 9; Handling 8; Build Quality
8; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 7; Value for
money: 7; Safety – Five Star ANCAP rating.
Overall points out of 10: 8.5
compact EVs on the market.
All this exhilaration is
delivered while cocooning the
driver and passengers in silence,
apart from the sensation the car
is covering a lot of ground in a
very short time.
A single-speed automatic
handles all this performance
with ease and efficiency,
ensuring the EV system brings
its ‘A’ game to whatever driving
scenario you find yourself in,
whether planned or unexpected.
The cabin is smaller than both
the ID.4 and Enyaq, with this
pair a better choice if load and
people-carrying capacity are
important.
I didn’t like the chunky
‘A’ pillar with a quarter-light
window which limited driver
forward visibility in the test
vehicle.
More likeable though were
the sports front seats, floating
touchscreen, multi-colour
ambient lighting, dual-zone
climate control air conditioning
and split folding rear seats with
ski hatch.
Keeping you connected is
a 12-inch colour touchscreen
including Bluetooth, 2 USB-C
ports and integrated voice
control wireless phone charger.
The Born is fully kitted out
with the full suite of safety
measures including front assist
with predictive pedestrian and
cyclist protection. Side assist
with rear traffic alert warns the
driver of collisions with other
vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians
and static obstacles. These
are just a snippet of the test
car’s safety package that is too
comprehensive to list.
Having the high-voltage
battery located in the floor
between the axles provides the
almost perfect low centre of
gravity, for optimum agility
and balance that underpins the
Born’s next-level road holding.
The sports suspension has five
different drive modes that can
be tailored to the type of driving
you’re planning
Grip and stability through
even the tightest corners
is masterfully tenacious
and among the best I have
experienced in an EV.
The trade-off is low speed
ride comfort that isn’t that well
cushioned, and suspension
noise, while not overbearing, still
makes it presence heard. Yes, it
can be annoying at times during
in-town driving, but a it’s a
concession I would happily make
in exchange for the Cupra Born’s
sublime handling.
FEATURED ARTIST: MAX BROWN | BIOGRAPHY
“My work is about a memory, a time, a
place, a thing. It becomes transcripted
into a detail with a movement or
a gesture, these markings hold a
relevance to me, to a journey that I am
on with the places to visit and emotions
that are felt.”
Max is a 28 year old artist currently residing in
his hometown of Christchurch, New Zealand.
Having studied in Wellington and completing his
Bachelors in Design Innovation, he set out to be
an Artist in all fields. Industrial design has given
him the ability to create between disciplines.
In 2015, himself and a group of peers founded the
Artist Residents which continues to be a driving
factor behind all work. In 2021 Max opened Xgaleri
alongside his Mother and continues to paint there,
learning and growing as an artist.
After years of creating, this theme of
documentation has drifted into nature, something
Max considers to be one of the most freeing
aspects of being. He likes to take this and breathe
a natural existence into his work.
Maps, thoughts, feelings and colour exercised
by texture and form. Timestamps of a moment
fleeting, once here now gone. Max’s work is soft
yet hard, refined yet raw, opposites attract and
find themselves playing roles of expression and
creativity in his paintings.
Mostly abstract and without definable subject
matter, Max embodies an emotional translation
of concept and design to deliver a truly unique
and brilliant understanding of the world around
him. You could think of it as a visual diary, always
recycling past feelings into new and inspiring
ideas. Max believes in the everyday artist and in
any aspect of life one can encapsulate that.
“There are times spent painting in the rain and
works developed sitting in a vast green field, all
are me and I hope something reflects in you. I’m in
love with nature and the ability to express myself,
I leave it all out in my medium. Here you will find
my workings alongside the stories they tell, enjoy.”
Thank you for inviting me to be the guest artist for this
exhibition. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou.
THANK YOU
TO OUR GENEROUS SPONSORS FOR MAKING THIS EVENT POSSIBLE.
We encourage you to support these great businesses!
This year’s proceeds from
The Mt Pleasant Art Exhibition
fundraiser will go towards ‘play’.
Read more from Principal Donna Ellery:
The support of our PTA lead Art Exhibition Fundraiser plays a vital role in ensuring
our school community has the necessary resources to enrich our students’
learning experiences.
The PTA’s primary objectives include fostering a strong sense of community
and nurturing meaningful connections, while also providing resources and
opportunities for our students. Each year the school collaborates closely with the
PTA to put together a ‘wish-list’ that aligns with these objectives. In recent years,
fundraising efforts have enabled us to acquire essential items such as iPads,
musical equipment, development of the school turf and maintenance to our
school pool.
This year, our PTA is embracing a new fundraising journey, which includes an
investment in our play spaces. Play is a vital ingredient in our children’s learning
and enjoyment of school. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that
learning through play brings numerous benefits to students’ learning and
development. These benefits include the development of interpersonal skills,
student engagement, thinking skills and smooth transitions to school.
This year the PTA has already funded the gaga ball pit, which the students have
been making great use out of. With our school budget constraints, PTA fundraising
proves invaluable, as it supplements the cost of the school’s upgrades.
The proceeds from the Art Exhibition this year will go to upgrades to the junior
school playground, which is in need of an upgrade, as well as a new wheels track
for the students to enjoy. These are two major projects, so we anticipate that our
fundraising efforts will require longer than just this year. However, we need to start
somewhere and the Art Exhibition is a major financial contributor to move these
projects forward. We have had amazing ideas from our community consultation
so far.
Your continued support and contributions are instrumental in bringing these
resources to our school, enriching the educational journey of our tamariki. Without
the support of our community, we would not be able to achieve these goals.
HOW CAN YOU CONTRIBUTE?
Support The Mt Pleasant Art Exhibition by coming along, buying a raffle ticket, a
sausage from the sausage sizzle and if you love a piece of art please buy it!
Alternatively, if you are unable to attend the exhibition but would still like to
contribute, donations can be made:
• At the school office via EFTPOS or cash
• Bank directly into the PTA account - 12 3483 0044625 00 using ‘Play’ as
reference. Contributors will be provided with a Tax Receipt upon request.
Thank you in advance for supporting our Kura.
