Legal Assistant 

The Plymouth County Attorney’s Office is an equal opportunity

County Attorney’s Office prosecutes all State criminal offenses, 

handles all juvenile court cases, mental health and substance 

abuse committals, serves as general legal counsel to Plymouth 

County, provides advocacy on behalf of victims, and works to 

protect the public’s rights and provide justice. 

Well qualified candidates would have one or more of the following 

qualifications: some law office experience; a legal assistant or 

paralegal degree; a four-year degree in criminal justice, business 

administration, or a related field; or substantial experience in a 

related office environment. 

A legal assistant in the Plymouth County Attorney’s office will 

work in a professional work environment and interact with 

attorneys, the public, law enforcement, Judges, court staff and 

other justice partners. Knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft 

Word, Outlook, and document templates is required. Experience 

working with Microsoft Excel and with electronic records 

management systems and/or data bases is preferred. A legal 

assistant will spend a majority of their time drafting legal 

documents, electronically filing documents, working with 

documents in a database, and preparing cases for prosecution. 

Legal assistants also work with staff attorneys directly on cases, 

interact with victims, and witnesses, and occasionally attend 

court proceedings with the prosecuting attorneys. Starting salary 

will be between $42,000 and $52,000 per year depending on 

qualifications and experience. Benefits include health insurance, 

IPERS pension plan, paid vacation, and sick leave.

the Plymouth County Secondary 

Roads Department. 

The Board of Supervisors 

approved purchasing 

the vehicle from Ziegler for 

$326,180. Plymouth County 

Engineer Tom Rohe said 

the county would be able to 

trade in a 2006 grader for 

$58,700.

JOHNSTON — The Iowa 

Girls Coaches Association welcomed 

three volleyball coaches 

into their Hall of Fame on Nov. 

11. Unbeknowns to the selection 

committee when choosing 

the inductees, all three, EaVon 

Woodin, Marilyn Murra and 

Marlene Baumann, were 

Westmar College graduates. In 

another twist, Murra and Baumann 

are sisters. 

“They had a committee that 

chose it,” Murra said. “They 

did not know that we are all 

connected. They had no clue. 

In fact, one of them didn’t even 

know that Marlene and I are 

sisters.” 

Woodin and Baumann were 

members of the 1972 graduating 

class at Westmar while 

Murra graduated in 1975. 

“We all were together there. 

I think I mentioned it to somebody 

and they said, ‘I didn’t 

realize that,’” Woodin said. 

Baumann said it was a special 

momen to be part of this class 

of honorees. 

“It was quite an honor. It 

was special. Then to go in with 

Marilyn and EaVon, it was even 

more special,” Baumann said. 

“When we were down there, we 

had a bunch of Le Mars people, 

a bunch of Westmar people had 

come and supported us. Our 

family was all Westmar and so 

it was pretty neat.”

“This year, as The Browns 

will have two shows on Saturday, 

we are no longer doing 

Breakfast with Rudolph,” Catton 

said. “Instead we are adding 

‘Eating with the Elves’ which 

will take place at the KC Hall, 

from 8 to 11 a.m.” 

She explained the breakfast 

is not a ticketed event. 

“You can come anytime, it’s 

a buffet style breakfast, a full 

spread,” she said. 

The KC Hall will also be the 

place for lunch and dinner 

throughout the day. 

New this year will be a skating 

rink located in the Bamboo 

Village parking lot. 

The skating rink, will be open 

from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and those 

who wish to skate may register 

for a 30-minute slot for $5. 

“We do have skates available 

or you can bring your 

own skates,” Catton said. “It 

is a synthetic rink so we won’t 

have to worry about cold temperatures. 

We’re excited for 

that addition.” 

With the detour of Highway 

3 traffic on First Street North, 

some activities have been 

moved.

Wreaths are flocked, trees are 

unwrapped and photo props are 

coming out of storage. 

This is the 37th year T&S Christmas 

Tree Farm is open to the public 

to purchase previously cut trees 

or to venture out into the field 

and cut your own Christmas tree. 

Opening day was Saturday, Nov. 

18, at noon. 

In the field there are 22 acres 

with lots of varieties of trees 

available, including spruce, 

cedar, three types of firs and 

two pines.

LE MARS — It’s not like they are not aware 

of the dangers inherent in their work. 

Iowa farmers take precautions and are 

sensitive to the need to be careful, especially 

at busy times like harvest, according to Iowa 

State University Extension and Outreach field 

agronomist Leah Ten Napel of Le Mars. 

“I think many farmers are aware of safety 

issues and do their best to mitigate those risks, 

but accidents still happen,” Ten Napel said. 

She sees examples on a regular basis. 

“Farmers take many steps to make the roads 

safer by using safety reflective tape and signage 

on their equipment. They also travel slowly 

and travel during non-peak times of the day,” 

Ten Napel said. “On the farm, many farmers 

use safety equipment when entering bins, and 

move equipment around the farm with caution 

when others are present.” 

Still, it is by its very nature a dangerous line 

of work. We have witnessed tragic examples 

in the area in the past decade. 

Gene Sitzmann, 55, of Le Mars, died in a 

combine accident while driving eastbound 

on a gravel road on Oct. 17, 2014. 

On July 21, 2020, Daniel Cronin, 65, 

was killed when he was trapped in a 

grain bin on his farm five miles east 

of Le Mars.
