I just didn’t care for it cold, topped with
whipped cream and annoyingly sweet.
Speaking of pumpkin and fall, a transformation
took place at a house in our neighborhood
over the weekend. Last Friday,
there were blooms of magenta and purple
spilling over the edges of flowerpots gracing
the front landscape beds. I did a doubletake
this morning to notice rich burgundy,
burnt orange and golden yellow mums now
nestled into those pots and holding places
of honor.
Along a route I often travel through the
country, a roadside stand that had been
selling sweet corn and zucchini now offers a
colorful array of pumpkins and gourds.
I’m not ready to let go of summer just
yet and appreciate the venues in the Iowa
Great Lakes area that are staying open, even
if with reduced hours, for dining and live
music. It’s hard going cold turkey. Almost
as painful as going cold with my coffee
order.

Music is a popular attraction at
Arnolds Park Amusement Park. We
have several different venues and
we want to expand our offerings to
a whole new audience. This will be a
great place to stop after work. The
performers are playing 5-8 p.m., the
views are great and any age can stop
by to enjoy some great music.

be starting to drop, but
live outdoor music is
still on the menu at Arnolds
Park Amusement Park.
They will be hosting a
series of free concerts this
fall called Friday Night Live.
The series kicks off with
Jason Kincil on Sept. 6, and
will continue with Sugar &
Spice on Sept. 13, Canaan
James on Sept. 20-21, and
Rural Route on Sept. 27.
The shows take place at
6 p.m. on The Lake View
Deck at Preservation Plaza.
It’s a series that got its
start last year.
“Our initial attempt at
providing some free music
on Friday Nights was last
summer, it really started to
take off in the fall, we decided
to find a sponsor and
expand it this year. Thanks
to Michelob Ultra, we’re
able to offer free music for
Friday Night Live on The
Lake View Deck through
October this year,” said
Chris Swanson, the director
of HAPI Marketing.
This series will feature
musicians who are all new
to performing at Arnolds
Park
“The series is a mixture
of local and Midwest musicians,
this September, we
even have an entertainer
coming from New York to
play on the deck. Canaan
James came here from
New York last winter for
the Midwest CMO Awards
Show, really enjoyed the
area and asked if some
day he could come back to
play,” Swanson said. “The
entertainers we have coming
in September are all
first timers, I’m excited to
hear all of them.”
In addition to showing
off new talent to the area,
Swanson is excited about
showing off a new venue
people might not have
checked out yet.
“The deck was new last
year, it has the most beautiful
view of the lake and I
really wanted to promote
this new venue with local
entertainers on Friday
Nights through the fall,”
Swanson said.
He hopes that by expanding
the acts they offer

in Spencer.
With nearly 30 new items on
the menu at various concessions
throughout the grounds, this
year’s edition of the “World’s
Greatest County Fair” is sure
to have something for everyone
to enjoy.
In addition to the time tested
favorites like turkey legs and
funnel cakes, there are plenty of
unique, interesting and delicious
bites to try.
Fair food is often one of the
top draws for fair visitors — Clay
County Fair social media specialist
Emily Mars is no exception.
“I’m from Paullina and have attended
the fair since I was a small
child and as a family we always
had a favorite locations we had to
eat at — the cattlemen’s and pork

around the fairgrounds,”
Mars said. “If we were
hungry and found ourselves
by the mini cinnamon rolls,
we’d get some of those.
This year there are more than 70
food vendors on the grounds.
Six new items from those vendors were named finalists
for the “World’s Greatest County Fair Food Contest.”
On opening day, a panel of celebrity judges will come
together to name the winner, while fairgoers will have
several days to try each food and vote for the “People’s
Choice Award.”
“Food has become so important and sought after at
the fair,” Mars said. “People want to try new and crazy
things and it’s the perfect time to do it with the crazy
concoctions our food vendors come up with — people
have a willingness to try something different just because
they’re at the fair and maybe see somebody walking
around with something different that looks delicious.”

Waves rolling and crashing to
shore, the sun setting over
the open sea — beautiful
to behold, challenging to recreate
on canvas.
But it’s something Chicago-based
artist Janice Czwerwinski has perfected
and has put on display at the
Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji.
Several scenes from the sea, crafted
with oil paints, are being shown
through Oct. 5 in the art center’s
Goodenow Gallery.
“She’s an artist that has been very
active and involved in plein air
events around the country and it’s
exciting to have someone that’s moving
and shaking so to speak in the art
world, here on display at the art center,”
said visual arts director Danielle
Clouse Gast. “And, of course, the way
she depicts water should resonate
well with folks that live here and visit
the Lakes area.”
While they may be ocean scenes
and not those of an inland lake, they
will certainly evoke similar feelings
for anyone with an affinity for the
water.
And the colors of sunset alongside
blue hues of shimmering water can
be enjoyed by all those who find
similar scenes in the Iowa Great
Lakes.
In fact there will be a few tried and
true Okoboji scenes for visitors to
see as well thanks to a guest artist
also showcasing work in the exhibit.
“The colors, blues and greens, will
hit you immediately when you walk
into the Goodenow Gallery,” Clouse
Gast said. “There is also a wall of
work her sister-in-law, Roberta Williams,
who locals and visitors alike
may be familiar with from her Okoboji
scenes. It’s a nice combination
to have a show with these two very
talented painters. F

And the Pearson
Lakes Art Center is encouraging
people to take advantage
with their taste buds.
They will be hosting a new
cooking class focused on End
of Summer Salads which will
take place at noon Thursday, Sept. 12.
The cost to attend the class is $50 for art
center members and $60 for nonmembers.
The class will be led by Sarah
Page from So Good by Sarah,
a custom catering business
based in Spirit Lake.
The hands-on class
will have the attendees
learning
to prepare the
salads and
working to do
just that with
their own
two hands.
The salads

making
include

Cobb with salmon, watermelon caprese,
blackberry peach salad with chicken,
and summer steak salad with cilantro
lime.
This will be Sarah’s first time teaching
a class at the Pearson Lakes Art Center.
“Sarah will engage participants by
teaching and leading them in pairing a
bounty of beautiful fresh fruits and vegetables
with satisfying lean proteins. She
also hopes to teach about how to select
and purchase the best produce, as well as
different or new approaches in presenting
salads as an entree or side dish,” said
Jean Quinn, the culinary director at the
Pearson Lakes Art Center.
Sarah hopes that she is able to share
her love of cooking with others through
this class.
“I’ve always had a passion for food
and grew up loving to cook and bake,
as my family had bakeries when I was
a young girl. Cooking and baking is my
love language,” Sarah said. “I moved to

the Lakes area in the 1990s and for over
25 years was a server and a dessert chef
for many great restaurants. It was a lot of
fun! I decided to start my business two
years ago with baking and doing frozen
entrees (which I still do), and have
grown it into a custom catering, which I
adore! Coming up with new fun menus
and ideas makes me really happy. I also
get to meet some really neat people!”
For those who enjoy her End of Summer
Salads class should make sure they
sign up for her next class over the holiday
season.
“Sarah will be offering a demonstration
luncheon class in December.
Traditional Tastes of the Holidays is
scheduled for Dec. 5 at noon. It will be
a perfect time for a break from the busyness
of the holidays,” Quinn said. “Sarah
grew up celebrating both Christmas
and Hanukkah, so will be explaining
and preparing classic dishes from both
traditions for you to enjoy!” F
