“Although it’s not why I took on the role, it is a
byproduct,” says Adrian. “There are young kids who
are a bit on the fringe and feel like they don’t fit in
very well, and I want to show them that this is their
country as well, we’re all part of the community and
we can participate in all parts of society. And I’m so
proud to be the first one doing so; hopefully this will
inspire others to follow on and get more involved in
the community.”
Adrian is working with Brereton Million, who offer
youth groups and activities for the town’s youngsters,
and is hoping to offer educational and motivational
talks.
“The only thing that ever stops people is themselves,”
says Adrian. “I’m a prime example; I grew up on the
fringes - there were only five black families in Rugeley
when I was a kid, so I never felt like I fitted in. But
going into the military and coming back to Rugeley,
I’ve found peace here - it’s a beautiful place to be.
“And nowadays it’s different; it doesn’t have to be
that way. Kids can be anything they want to be, the
limitations are only about personal perception, and
motivating them would make this role valuable for
me.”
Today’s town criers are dressed to impress in a red
and gold coat, breeches, boots and a tricorne hat.
And a life in uniform is nothing new for Adrian;
he has, in fact, been in uniformed service since the
tender age of six.
Starting out with the Boys’ Brigade, Cubs and
Scouts, Adrian entered the military, firstly as an
army cadet before joining the French Foreign Legion
and then the British Army as Infantry Commander.
After leaving the army Adrian swapped military for
medical, training as a paramedic, and now works as a
therapist.
So what is being a town crier in 2024 all about?
“There’s education of community, keeping up of
ADRIAN LEADS A PARADE WITH HIS GRANDSON ARCHIE
ADRIAN IS HELPING TO REVIVE
A CENTURIES-OLD TRADITION
tradition and sharing history, and representing our
town, being an ambassador,” explains Adrian.
“Then there are the proclamations, and again, it’s
expected to keep up with tradition in that respect.
We’ve recently had the D-Day 80 proclamation,
which was a case of going out and telling people
about the event. And in the evening we had the
lighting of the beacon, and I led Rugeley town in the
event, which had members of Parliament and the full
town council present - which was a lot of pressure!
“Being ex-military, I’ve got a good idea of the
etiquette around memorial service, and it was such
an important thing to be a part of. Remembering
our forebears is vital to stop us forgetting
- it’s why we say ‘lest we forget’. And to
be honest, we do forget unless we have
someone up front making noise about it -
which is where I come in.”
While Rugeley has had people undertake
town crier duties in an unofficial capacity
over the years, most recently for the late
Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, Adrian
is the town’s first official town crier since
the early 1900s. Now a familiar presence
at events around the town, he is referred to
locally as ‘Mr Rugeley’.
“I’m hoping to make the town crier
role part of the culture, and part of the
community.” he adds. “If in 100 years I had
started an unbroken chain of town criers,
that would be incredibly special. ”

“This trail is perfect for families looking for summer
holiday adventures. It’s an irresistible way to explore
our local areas while raising vital funds for St Giles
and we can’t wait for everyone to see them. We’re
bringing colour and creativity to our streets while
supporting a cause close to our hearts,” she added.
The March of the Elephants arts trail is a part of
St Giles Hospice’s ongoing fundraising efforts. A
registered charity offering specialist palliative and
end of life care, free of charge, for people living with
terminal illnesses, as well as providing support for
their families and carers, St Giles Hospice spends close
to £10 million a year providing specialist services.
With up to 25% of this funded by the Government,
the hospice relies heavily on donations and income
generation from the local community.
These gentle giants, chosen for their characteristics
that mirror the compassionate care St Giles Hospice
provides, will be hidden in plain sight from Monday,
July 1 until Sunday, September 8.
Following the trail’s conclusion, the sculptures will be
auctioned off on September 24, 2024. The proceeds
Looking to rent for the first time?
The demand for rental property has never been stronger and with more and more people
competing for properties, first time renters often miss out as they are unable to provide a
reference from an existing landlord to support their application. If you are finding yourself
in this position, below are some useful tips to help you to secure your chosen property.
1. Understand your budget
Before you start viewing properties work out your finances. Many agencies look for 30 times the monthly rent as a
minimum salary requirement. If the rent is £1000 per month, this would mean as a minimum you would need to show
an income of £30,000. This can be split between two parties so if you and a partner are looking to rent together, you
would need to prove that the combined income is at least this figure.
Take into account that you are going to be paying not only the rent, but council tax, gas and electricity, water on top of
your food and social expenses. Make sure you can afford your monthly costs and don’t commit to a larger property
that may put you under financial pressure in the future.
2. Get a guarantor
Without a current landlord to provide a reference, lettings agents and landlords will usually want a solid guarantor in
place who will form part of the contract for letting a property. The Guarantor then becomes responsible for paying
the rent , any damages, and any other costs relating to the property in the event that you are unable to meet the rent
payments. Ask a parent or family member if they are willing to be your guarantor for you before you start viewing.
3. Be prepared to move in on the earliest date the property is available
Landlords don’t want their property sitting empty for long so the date on the property listing is the earliest date that
you can move in – and also the preferred date the landlord wants a tenant in there. If you can’t move in for a week or
two after this date, the landlord will miss out on the rent for this period and is more likely to chose another tenant who
will commit and move in sooner. You don’t have to actually move in on this date, but you would need to start paying the
rent from that date to commit to the property.
4. Go in and see the agent
With competition for properties being so strong, your application will likely be one
of several that the landlord receives. To increase your chances, you need to make
yourself stand out from the others. A personal approach by visiting the agent and
discussing your application can help build a rapport with the agent who in turn can
relay this to the landlord , increasing the chance of the landlord choosing to go with
you over other candidates.
Time to unlock the future of
retirement living in the West Midlands
The housing crisis is often seen from the perspective of younger homebuyers, when in fact the lack of
affordable housing is a problem facing all ages, particularly when the under-supply of housing for older
people is not keeping up with this fast-changing demographic.
Moya and Norman, McCarthy Stone Homeowners
We were also keen not to have to sacrifice a second
bedroom as part of the move, something we thought would
be out of reach on our budget.
Who qualifies for Shared Ownership?
To qualify for the scheme, you need to be over 55
with a household income of less than £80,000
(£90,000 in London) and only own one property.
“When we toured the local McCarthy Stone
development and saw the luxury apartments, the
beautiful communal lounge area and landscaped
gardens, we did not believe it would be possible
to achieve such a lifestyle. Our helpful McCarthy
Stone sales representative explained that there were
several ways to join the McCarthy Stone community;
buying, renting or Shared Ownership. And the rest is
history…”
Stowe Place, Lichfield
Age UK estimate that by 2030 over 20% of the UK
population will be aged over 651 . Many older people
will choose to remain in their own homes, but specialist
retirement housing has an important role to play, and with
on-site facilities and a ready-made community, it can assist
people to remain independent for longer. Each year, just
7,000 new retirement properties are built, compared with a
potential demand for around 30,000 specialist homes 2 .
Could a housing alternative, with government
backing, help more older people access the
specialist accommodation they want?
In a game-changing move for the sector and major
expansion of shared ownership for the nation’s
retirees, leading developer of retirement communities,
McCarthy Stone, now offers a Shared Ownership
Scheme at a selection of its developments in partnership
with Homes England, including Stowe Place in Lichfield
and Powell House in Sutton Coldfield.
This offers a new solution for those wanting to downsize,
by making ‘right-sizing’ an affordable option for thousands
more older people, as it provides a more accessible way
to buy.
How does Shared Ownership work?
Shared Ownership reduces the upfront purchase cost of a
retirement apartment by providing a choice of ownership
options up to 75%. Importantly, at this level, there is no
rent to pay on the remaining share. It means a typical
property costing £300,000 would now only cost £225,000
based on 75% ownership*, with zero rent or £150,000
based on 50% ownership* with an affordable
monthly rent.
How can Shared Ownership benefit me?
Retirees can enjoy a safe, secure and independent lifestyle
for less with the help of Shared Ownership.
Offering Shared Ownership opens up the market to more
retirees to be able to live happier, healthier lives through
a choice of ownership options to suit different individual
circumstances, preferences, and at a more affordable
price range.
One couple who made the move using Shared
Ownership, Dot and Roy said: “We had considered selling
our home and renting a bungalow from a private landlord
but with high local rents, combined with the insecurity that
a private landlord could serve notice on us at any given time,
we decided this was not right for us.
Another couple, Moya and Norman shared their
experience: “Had it not been for Shared Ownership and
McCarthy Stone, our options would have been significantly
less as we didn’t have the equity in our property. This
would have deterred us from moving altogether and left us
stuck in a property we were becoming fed up with and was
having a negative impact on our wellbeing.
“It’s been a great ‘half-way house’ for us. It’s allowed us to
retain home ownership as well as providing access to a range
of services we didn’t have in our previous home, something
that has given our family great peace of mind.
THE GLORIOUS CANAPES
Now, it’s not too often that a veg-based dish stands
out above prime cuts and exquisite seafood on a menu
aimed at meat-eaters, but Kasae’s first dish proper was a
revelation. A charred wedge of hispi cabbage doused in
a mouth-watering brown butter miso glaze and served
with a whipped elderflower creme fraiche and toasted
almonds offered a wonderful combination of smoky,
rich and slightly sweet. Packing a serious flavour punch,
it was a veggie dish which couldn’t fail to please even
the most ardent carnivores, and a real highlight of the
evening.
And the quality of Kasae’s cooking didn’t falter as we
headed onto the seafood course; a beautifully meaty
scallop with a tart rhubarb hollandaise and salt-baked
kohlrabi, finished with pumpkin seed oil. The scallop
was perfectly sweet and tender, with the slight sharpness
from the rhubarb adding a new dimension to the
hollandaise - it was another impressive dish.
It was the main course, however, which had caught my
eye upon first glance at the menu. I absolutely love duck,
so a duck main event was right up my street. And served
with a confit duck waffle? Well, call me intrigued.
The duck was beautifully cooked and adorned with
sweet, sticky spiced glaze which complemented the
robust flavour perfectly. The accompanying carrots
- both grated with coriander and in puree form -
maintained the sweet touch, while the duck waffle
hit a surprisingly savoury note. It was an inventive,
well-balanced dish which showcased Kasae’s culinary
credentials.
A refreshing pre-dessert of coconut panna cotta with a
sweet-sharp apple and wasabi granita, apple balls and
lovage oil crammed a feast of flavour into each bite, the
heat from the wasabi creating a pleasing hot-and-cold
mouthfeel with the icy granita.
The evening’s dessert, billed ‘Not A Ferrero Rocher’,
paid homage to a classic chocolate favourite with malt
chocolate mousse and whiskey caramel enrobed in a
chocolate olive oil tart topped with crushed hazelnuts.
The pastry was super-thin and oh-so-crisp, the mousse
light and creamy, the caramel smooth and rich. A
quenelle of creme fraiche sorbet added a cleansing tang
which cut through any richness nicely and ensured the
balance of sweetness remained on point.
Throughout the evening, Kasae popped out of the
kitchen to chat to diners. We managed to grab a quick
chat with chef as we made our way out, and she was just
as warm and lovely in person as she came across on the
screen - despite being in the midst of a hectic service.
Sauce Supper Club’s evenings are always a treat, and
Kasae Fraser was no exception. For foodies looking for
a tastebud-tingling feast - and fans of MasterChef in
particular - these evenings are the hottest ticket in town.
Keep a lookout for Sauce Supper Club next events, and
don’t miss the chance to experience a little small-screen
glamour right here in Lichfield.
lovely citrus tang to dishes, and chives are great
for adding an onion or garlic flavour to dishes.
Chives will produce chive flowers, which you
can then pickle to create a purple, garlicky chive
flower vinegar.
“Use your herbs to add an extra dimension to
your cooking; something as simple as adding
chives to your baby potatoes as you boil them
just adds a new level of flavour.
“Spinach is another good one to grow; the plugs
are relatively cheap and the leaves grow back
when you pick them so you tend to get a really
good yield from your plants. Rocket, too, tends
to grow really well - and growing your own is
much more cost-effective than buying bagged
salad in the supermarket.
“We’ve also been growing edible flowers - nasturtiums
are a favourite. They’re really easy to grow
from seed; a packet of seeds costs around £1.50,
we grew them in the greenhouse then planted
them out and they’ve taken really well. The leaves
are great in salads, they add a nice, peppery
flavour, and then the flowers themselves can be
used as a garnish.
“Viola flowers are another nice one; they’re great
for adding a subtle flavour and as a colourful
garnish for salads, or even on desserts. They’re
a nice thing to use if you’re having, say, a dinner
party and want to elevate your presentation.”
Berries, says Jack, are now coming into their
best season, with British strawberries the king of
summer fruits.
“Around Lichfield, New Farm strawberries are
the best around,” says Jack. “There’s just nothing
that says summer like a British strawberry,
“Wild berries are good to forage too, if you can
find them - wild raspberries and cherries can be
found locally, so make the most of it!”
Strawberries with lemon curd
and shortbread crumb
INGREDIENTS:
Punnet of strawberries
For the shortbread:
150g plain flour
100g unsalted butter
50g caster sugar
For the lemon curd:
135g lemon juice or puree
135g caster sugar
135g whole egg (around 2.5 to 3 eggs)
135g unsalted butter
4g agar agar
For the lemon curd, whisk together the
lemon juice or puree and the caster sugar,
then add in the egg and cook over a bain
marie until it thickens enough to coat the
back of a spoon, being careful not to let
it get too hot or you’ll risk curdling the
eggs. Whisk in the agar agar then take
off the heat and add in the butter in small
amounts. Whisk the butter to emulsify then
refrigerate to cool.
I finish the dish with a strawberry sorbet and
garnish with lemon verbena.
Method
Use fresh and perfectly ripe strawberries
as the foundation for a beautiful summer
dessert - I use New Farm strawberries and
vac-pack them in Minus 8 vinegar which
takes them to the next level.
For the shortbread, mix your flour, butter
and sugar to a crumb then tip onto a
baking tray and bake at 170C for 15-20
minutes until golden. You can easily amend
the amount as necessary - just remember
it’s always a ratio of three parts flour to two
parts butter and one part sugar.
French toast with fresh
strawberries and creme fraiche
INGREDIENTS:
For the French toast:
1 loaf brioche
300ml double cream
4 eggs
200g caster sugar
4 lemons, zested
100g butter
To serve:
200g creme fraiche
50g honey
1 lemon, zested
1 punnet strawberries
Icing sugar to dust
1/2 lime, juiced
1/2 bunch of coriander, roughly chopped
Method:
In a bowl, whisk together the cream, eggs, sugar
and lemon zest. Slice the brioche into roughly
one-inch thick slices and add to the mix. Leave to
soak for 10 minutes, flipping halfway through.
After the brioche has soaked and absorbed
the mix, heat the butter in a frying pan over
a medium heat. Gently fry the brioche for 2-3
minutes until golden brown on each side, then
transfer to a lined baking tray and finish in the
oven at 160C for 12-15 minutes.
While the toast is cooking, in another small bowl
mix together the creme fraiche, honey and lemon
zest. Taste for sweetness and add more honey if
needed, depending on your preference.
Once the toast is finished, remove from the
oven and serve warm with the creme fraiche,
fresh strawberries and a dusting of icing sugar.
OWNING YOUR PENSION PLANNING – IT IS YOUR
MONEY
This month we focus on the murky world of pensions. A
complicated subject, which I will attempt to demystify a little.
A pension is, essentially, a deferment of income now for the
future (most commonly used in retirement). The tax advantages
vary, though in a nutshell, putting money into your pension is
a tax efficient way of saving even if you have some tax to pay
when you look at accessing it in the future.
In simple terms, £1 in pay today for a higher rate taxpayer could
be 58p in your pocket. £1 in your pension has an extra 42p* to
grow until you take your pension benefits.
It is hard to imagine what investment could get 58p back to £1
instantly. This isn’t even considering the effects of c ompounded
returns over many years.
INVESTMENT CONSIDERATIONS – RISK AND
REWARD
Most people who save into a pension, personally or by autoenrolment,
will be invested in investment funds which invest in
various types of underlying assets: shares, bonds, property and
so on.
It is a sad reality that few ever review this and when they do get
interested, often near retirement, it is too late. Effecting change
retrospectively would require time travel, and DeLoreans aren’t
common.
SHARES: An equity stake in a company entitles the shareholder
to dividends, where payable. The value of the share fluctuates
based on many factors. These factors include the fortunes of
the company (good or bad), stock market conditions and even
geopolitical events or natural disasters. Shares can be held in
large companies, small companies and overseas companies,
where fluctuations in currencies also affect the level of ri sks.
BONDS: Also known as Fixed Interest securities, these are
essentially loans to companies or governments. The investor/
lender lends the money in return for a coupon or interest
payment for a fixed period. This period is the duration and
the longer the duration, the more potential risk there is. This is
because many things can change between the start date and the
end of this duration/term. One large factor in these investments
is the credit-worthiness of who the money is lent to. Higher
interest payments can be secured when lending in a low credit
rating environment BUT the risk of partial or full default (some
or all of the original loan is lost) is greater, for obvious reasons.
COMMERCIAL PROPERTY: Including office blocks, retail
parks etc. These generate rental income to the investors. Appetite
for this investment medium has changed in the past decade or
46
so with flexible home working, conferencing technology and, of
course, the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a nutshell, understanding that the mixture of the above
investment types will affect the risk and potential rewards
you may experience. This will vary over time due to market
conditions and personal circumstances, such as approaching the
point when pension benefits will be accessed.
OTHER THINGS TO KNOW
Pension savings are YOUR savings. They can pass down the
generations, sometimes free of inheritance tax and income tax
for the beneficiaries.
Tax treatment of death benefits vary depending on the age at
which you pass away, the value of your pension savings and how
the benefits are inherited by your beneficiaries.
It is beyond the scope of this article to cover all the permutations,
though as a rule of thumb the income tax savings, flexibility you
can enjoy and the protection of your savings from inheritance
tax are very strong reasons to maximise, wherever possible.
Business owners can potentially use pension funds to purchase
the premises from which they trade using a Self Invested
Personal Pension or a Small Self Administered Pension. This can
be of huge benefit, where suitable.
TO SUMMARISE
Make sure you maximise your pension savings opportunities.
Ensure you understand HOW you are invested and match the
investment risk to your needs. Understand how the benefits
would pass to your next of kin as THEY DO NOT FORM
PART OF YOUR ESTATE and therefore not part of your will.
As always…. Please take professional advice and ensure you
maximise your savings. Remember, it is YOUR savings, it is
YOUR money.
The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation,
can change at any time and are generally dependent on
individual circumstances. *Assuming tax is recovered and
invested in your pension.
The value of investments can go up as well as down and your
investments are not guaranteed.
AS we head into the summer months, the fashion
set are going for bold - and there’s no mistaking
the hue of the season. It’s set to be a juicy one
as orange takes over as the colour of choice for
summer, injecting a beautifully bright sunshine
vibe into our wardrobes.
The SS24 catwalks saw models resplendent in the
zesty shade, dressed in orange hues from head
to toe, with simple maxi dresses reimagined at
Emilia Wickstead and Zimmermann taking it to
the next level with orange ombre, while Fendi
layered different shades for maximum impact.
From eye-wateringly bright neon tones through
sunset shades and subtle pastel iterations, the
catwalks were bursting with the dopamineinducing
hue.
And that, of course, is all part of the appeal.
Orange is often associated with confidence,
positivity, happiness and warmth, making it
the perfect shade to add a touch of fun to our
summer wardrobes. Add to that the fact that
fashion can be a real mood-elevator and you have
yourself a fashion trend that will no doubt put a
smile on your face.
Embrace the trend wholeheartedly by going for
a top-to-toe look; go down the colour block route
and choose one hue to coordinate your entire
outfit, or take inspiration from the ombre trend
and opt for light-to-dark oranges to add depth
and interest.
Or for a more easily wearable take, break up
the colour by mixing in orange separates with
more neutral hues such as white and tan. And
when going for that statement piece, let it do all
the talking. Keep your accessories to a minimum
and build around your one key piece for flawless
fashion impact.
BEAUTY
Bronze goddess
WHILE SUMMER IS STILL YET TO ARRIVE FULLY ON THESE SHORES, YOU CAN STILL GET THE
SUNKISSED LOOK WHATEVER THE WEATHER - COURTESY OF YOUR MAKEUP BAG
AS summer rolls around, we start to crave that dewy
glow and sunkissed glimmer reminiscent of holidays
in sunnier climes.
Last summer it was all about the ‘latte’ look - the
viral makeup trend which blew up on TikTok.
Championed by Hailey Bieber, it centred around
coffe-inspired shades of brown and nudes on a lightly
tanned base to create a fresh take on the bronzed
goddess look. And for 2024, bronze is back in a big
way.
One of the most powerful tools in your summer
makeup arsenal, bronzer has the power to give skin
a glorious glow sans input from the sun’s harmful
rays. What’s more, bronzer can easily make tired skin
feel awake and can even create the illusion of more
sculpted cheekbones.
The trick is to apply bronzer to all the parts of your
face that would naturally catch the sun - think nose,
forehead, temples and cheekbones - using it as a
contour to give your look a finish as radiant as a Greek
goddess.
For maximum impact, opt for bronze shades
throughout your makeup. Shimmery eyes and
luscious, gloss-tinted lips will complete the look -
perfect for sipping cocktails in golden hour.
