Quake-hit home delivers
major surprise at auction
AN ABANDONED earthquake
damaged property bordering
a golf course has sold for $1.01
million at auction – $160,000
above the on-market price.
The Bower Ave property, alongside
Waimairi Beach Golf Club in
Parklands, was marketed as being
in “as is, where is” condition.
Bayleys listing agent Shaun
Creek told OneRoof a family
member had been looking after
the property as best he could
since the owners departed for
Japan 14 years ago.
He said the four-bedroom
house would have been amazing
when it was first built in the
1970s, but had lost its shine. The
decor was dated, the in-ground
swimming pool was littered
with branches and leaves and
the quakes had caused structural
damage.
But that didn’t put off the nine
bidders – a mixture of developers
and renovators, OneRoof
reported.
The auction opened at
$600,000 and the house was
announced on the market at
$850,000. A couple who plan
to renovate the house made the
winning bid, beating a developer
in the final minutes of the
auction.
Creek said the new owners had
ambitions to live in the house.
“They have plans to restore
the home, which is pretty cool.
DAMAGED: The
abandoned house on
Bower Ave still features
some of the original, dated
decor. The in-ground pool
has been decommissioned
and is full of garden debris.
It should be quite stunning to
watch that progress. The underbidder
was looking at it more as
a development opportunity,” he
told OneRoof.
Creek said the vendors had
wanted to get fair market value
for the house and that’s exactly
what they got.
“We had no idea it was going to
sell for that much and neither did
the owners, but clearly for these
guys, it was at value at that level.”
He said there was nothing else
like it in the area.
“It’s always been a home that’s
captured people’s attention.
There are some good sales in
the suburb but nothing comparable
to this when it comes to
land size.”
Most homes in Parklands are
on sections of around 600sq
m and usually sell for between
$800,000 and $1m. The Bower
Ave house is on a 2000sq m section
bordering the golf course.
“This was one out of the
box, which was exciting. It was
a really interesting one. The
owners needed it sold, it was
going to be sold,” Creek told
OneRoof.
Positive progress in renewal project
Coastal Side
Celeste Donovan
Coastal Ward city councillor
Celeste Donovan looks at
what is happening in New
Brighton
NEW BRIGHTON’S regeneration
is continuing to gain momentum,
driven by a combination of
private, community, and councilled
projects.
Years of targeted economic
development and anchor
urban renewal projects led by
ChristchurchNZ, have brought
renewed optimism to the coastal
suburb, beginning with key
initiatives like the beachside
playground and the awardwinning
He Puna Taimoana hot
pools.
Building on this foundation,
Martini Investments is redeveloping
12 buildings over 8000sq m at
the seaside end of Brighton Mall,
transforming it into an entertainment
and hospitality precinct.
Southpaw Brewery is relocating
to the Pierside Development, adding
another hospitality highlight
to the area, with the brewery’s
fit-out set to begin soon.
Significant progress is
happening in the housing sector
with the second stage of the Te
Pākau Maru development now
under way. This includes the first
GOING UP: Construction has started on the second stage of
the Te Pākau Maru housing development site and will include
25 Homestar 7 sustainability homes.
HOSPITALITY: Southpaw Brewery is relocating its business to the Pierside Development,
with work on the fit-out to begin soon.
stage of the project, 25 Homestar
7 sustainability homes which are
nearly complete.
The developer has also secured
funding from the Ministry of
Pacific Peoples to assist five Pasifika
families through the Tangata
Atumotu Trust’s progressive
home ownership programme,
encouraging further retail and
community investment in the
area.
In a move to transform
underused spaces, Life in
Vacant Spaces (LiVS) has been
appointed to manage the Greater
New Brighton ‘Village Green’
Project.
This initiative will turn 1000sq
m of vacant land near the new
hospitality precinct into a vibrant
community hub with market
stalls, food trucks, and event
spaces.
The area’s retail revitalisation
is further supported by the
City Vacant Differential Rate,
introduced in 2024 to encourage
the development of run-down
sites. Of the 13 vacant properties
identified, five have already made
changes, while six remain liable
for the rate.
The suburb has also secured
significant funding through
the 2024-2034 Long-Term
Plan, including $4 million for
upgrading New Brighton Mall
and $15m for the Oram Avenue/
North-South extension.
With funding confirmed, onsite
investigations will guide the
next stage of the mall’s design.
Progress has already been made
on the pedestrian walkway and
community space as part of the
interim plan.
Additionally, $63.365m has
been allocated for renewing
the Pages Rd Bridge, with signs
looking positive for up to half the
cost being subsidised through
the National Land Transport
Plan – a major win for ratepayers
and the eastern suburbs.
New Brighton is evolving into
a thriving community, thanks
to a strong partnership between
local businesses, community
groups, ChristchurchNZ, and the
council, all working together to
bring new life and opportunities
to the suburb.
A GROUP of musicians are on
a mission to keep the dying art
of bell-ringing alive.
The Christ Church Cathedral
Handbell Ringers is looking for
new members to pass on their
skills and knowledge to, and
ensure the next generation can
still enjoy the art.
Handbell ringers captain
Andrew Cox said the hobby
combines music, exercise, and
teamwork.
“We all like music and it’s
something that’s unique – so
unique – and we just enjoy
playing.”
The playing of modern handbells
can be traced back to the
17th century.
“It originated from tower
bellringers, when they used to
practice in the winter and the
evenings,” Cox said.
“The church would be cold,
so they worked on handbells
and they could sit in the pub
with a jug of beer in one hand
and a bell in the other, and away
they go.”
He said the group used to
have 11 members but it has now
dwindled to five.
“We shut down during
Covid-19 for about 12 months,
and we’ve never been able to
ANCIENT ART: The Christ Church Cathedral Handbell Ringers are on the hunt for
new members.
pick up the full number since.”
Before the 2010 and 2011
earthquakes, the bellringers
regularly practiced at
Christ Church Cathedral.
They restarted again after their
bells were recovered from the
rubble.
“It’s looking a bit bleak at the
moment,” Cox said.
“If only we could get another
three or four more players, that
would make all the difference.”
He said there is no religious
element to the group, all you
need to be a potential member
is a basic knowledge of music
and the will to keep the art
alive.
Thursday September 12 2024 5
Paralympian shares celebration with Ryman
ALISON SMITH’S sharp
shooting instincts memorably
took her to the Big Apple to
compete successfully for an air
rifle bronze model in the 1984
Paralympic Games.
Four decades on, in the same
year Ryman is celebrating its
40th anniversary, Alison, a
bronze medallist, has been
keeping a close eye on the Paris
2024 Paralympic Games along
with fellow residents at Ryman’s
Diana Isaac Retirement Village in
Mairehau.
For Alison, it was a memorable
games, not least for seeing
President Ronald Reagan
officially opening the New
York event supported by heavy
security, she remembers. More
than three years earlier, in March
1981, Reagan was the target
of an assassination attempt
by John Hinckley Jr outside
the Washington Hilton.
Alison remembers that at the
games, Reagan remained within
a very tight protective cordon.
“The big excitement was the
President of the United States was
arriving via helicopter to open
the games.
“I had never seen so many
policemen, and snipers on top of
the buildings. Four helicopters
arrived, hovering over the
stadium. Eventually one landed
and out hopped Ronald Reagan
along with his entourage,” she
says.
“A lot of us had never seen
anything like that . . . looking
around and seeing all these guys
in dark clothing with their rifles
at the ready.”
While Alison was competing in
New York, back in Christchurch,
Ryman co-founders Kevin
Hickman and John Ryder were
laying the foundations for what
would become a network of 40
villages across New Zealand and
eight in Victoria, Australia.
On September 19, Alison,
along with fellow residents, will
be celebrating Ryman’s 40th
anniversary at special events
being held at each village.
Alison is now enjoying life in a
townhouse and watching events
in Paris on TV. Other residents
are well aware of her Paralympic
efforts, especially with the 2024
games taking place.
There were lots of other
highlights from the 1984 trip to
the USA.
She and other Kiwi competitors
were provided accommodation
at Hofstra University campus in
Hempstead, New York.
NEED REPAIRS
ON YOUR
CAR?
SHARP SHOOTER: Diana Isaac Retirement Village resident
Alison Smith shows off the air rifle bronze medal she won at
the 1984 Paralympic Games.
The accommodation was by
no means up to the standard of
paralympics today, but Alison has
no regrets about travelling such
distances and making the most of
the facilities available at the time.
“When I went it was pretty
basic,” she laughs.
“For transport they took the
seats out of one of the yellow
school buses and of course you
weren’t wearing seat belts or that
sort of thing, so you sort of held
on for grim death.”
Alison is the first and only
female shooting para athlete to
date to have represented New
Zealand at a Paralympic Games.
She won bronze in the women’s
air rifle integrated category.
Alison said every four years
the Paralympics are a reminder
of her mid-80s adventure,
particularly the accommodation
and transport to the venue,
though obviously times have
changed.
She remembers travelling
alongside two other Kiwi
paralympians, athlete Michael
O’Callaghan and field eventer
Denise Cook, to and from the
events. She remains in regular
contact with both.
Alison got into air rifle
shooting via the Canterbury
Paraplegic Association, starting
first in archery, training with
disabled athlete Neroli Fairhall.
Then in the late 1970s she joined
in with a memorable ‘games
night’.
One of the air rifle tutors that
night at the Ollivers Rd rugby
league hall, Len Smith, later
became her husband.
Winning the bronze medal of
course meant a phone call home
to New Zealand, to share her
incredible news with her parents,
brother and three sisters.
In those days the games were
only set up for paraplegic and
quadriplegic competitors rather
than those with a much wider
range of disabilities.
“I competed in a threepositional
shoot competition:
prone, kneeling, and standing,
all from the wheelchair. It was
60 shots in each position …
I proudly came home with a
bronze medal,” Alison says.
In 1984, another competitor
was Graham Condon who
helped source a wheelchair from
Healing Industries at a discount
for Alison, to make her sporting
achievements easier.
Alison is upfront about her life.
She was born on September 13,
1950, minus her right leg, from
the hip, and the left, from the
upper third of the thigh, starting
life with artificial limbs.
Recently, Alison was proud to
be recognised as New Zealand’s
No. 53 Paralympian.
Centuries-old folk remedy
supports good health!
A fermented liquid health tonic offers an array of
powerful health benefits. It is none other than the popular
apple cider vinegar or ACV. Since the time of Hippocrates
– the “Father of Medicine” – ACV has been renowned for
its curative properties.
In his famous book “ARTHRITIS & FOLK MEDICINE,”
DR. D.C. Jarvis reports how he found that Vermonters
who regularly consumed ACV & Honey had excellent
health, with many putting in a vigorous day’s work on the
farm even when well into their eighties. Jarvis also noted
the effects of ACV & H on arthritis to be remarkable, with
many patients reporting almost total relief after taking a
course of the mixture. Dr. Jarvis surmised that the acid and
potassium in cider vinegar counteracted calcium deposits
and helped the body control calcium use. Jarvis also
noted that Vermonters who consumed ACV & H around
mealtime had excellent blood pressure and circulation.
He found that protein foods thickened the blood and
vinegar thinned it. As the blood thickens, it cannot pass
easily through the blood vessels and capillaries. This
poor blood flow would reduce cellular health by limiting
nutrients to the cells and eliminating waste from the cells.
The body naturally increases blood pressure to prevent
cellular damage, which puts more stress on the blood
vessels, organs, and the heart. Having ACV & H with
meals will help avoid protein-raising blood pressure. It also
contributes to a feeling of greater well-being because the
thinner blood circulates quickly & more easily through the
blood vessels. Dr. Jarvis found regular consumption of CV
& H to be an excellent health tonic with numerous health
attributes.
ACV is highly nutritious as it contains all the goodness
of the apple in a form that is readily accepted by the body.
Good health starts with good digestion and assimilation
of nutrients. ACV taken before food will stimulate and
promote healthy digestion and assimilation of vital
nutrients for good health. A well-functioning digestive
system helps prevent disease by neutralising toxic
substances that enter the body.
It is important to note that not all ACV is produced
traditionally, and results are likely to prove disappointing
with some other cider vinegar.
Marshall’s Premium ACV & ACV with 20% Manuka
from organic whole apples. It is double strength, ensuring
you can use less. This unique product is recommended for
its traditional production and double strength, offering a
unique health tonic that stands out.
Cantabrians
Enviro Master has been helping
Cantabrians get the balance right when
it comes to choosing the perfect heat
pump or air conditioning system for
their home or office since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people,
qualified electricians, heating and
refrigeration engineers, help to supply
and install one of Christchurch’s
widest range of heat pumps including
Panasonic, Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin
and Fujitsu. Because they have no
affiliation with any one brand, you can
be assured their advice on the benefits
and differences between each product is
unbiased.
They will recommend the most
energy-efficient and cost-effective system
for your individual situation, and will
have you regulating the heat in your
home or office in no time.
Nowadays, customers are often
wanting whole home solutions to be
able to maintain even temperatures
throughout the home both in Winter
and Summer. This can be achieved by
using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in
designing, installing and commissioning
these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy offering 80 per cent
of the cost of a new heat pump up to
$3000 including GST.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer
Kiwi Homes initiative and is available
to Home owner/occupiers with a
Community Services Card, a SuperGold
combo card or who live in a low-income
area as determined by deciles 8-10 on
been built before 2008, have insulation
up to code (insulation subsidies also
available) and have no fixed heating
in any living area, such as an existing
operational heat pump or fireplace.
To ensure you choose the right system
for your home or business, one of Enviro
Master’s experts will visit to assess your
Enjoying the benefits
of prior preparation
The best meals are ones
you can prepare in advance,
writes Nigel Slater
THERE ARE PLUMP, crumb-coated
croquettes of peas and tarragon waiting
to pop into sizzling oil and slices of
potato, partly cooked and ready to toast
under the grill. The pea croquettes will
sit on a tangle of pea shoots and herbs.
The potatoes will get a sauce of sweet,
golden onion, curry paste and yoghurt.
Both are the sort of recipes you can
prepare in advance, leaving only the
cooking to the last minute.
Grilled potatoes with curry
yoghurt sauce
Serves 4. Ready in 45 minutes
Ingredients
400g potatoes, medium-sized
30 curry leaves
1 large onion
3 Tbsp ground nut vegetable oil, plus a
little extra
1-2 Tbsp mild curry paste
250ml yoghurt
Method
• Bring a deep pan of water to the boil,
then salt it generously. Peel the potatoes,
then add them, whole, to the water.
Let them cook for about 15 minutes or
until they are tender enough to pierce
easily with a metal skewer. Remove the
potatoes from the water and set aside to
cool a little.
• Warm the oil in a shallow pan,
scatter in half the curry leaves, fry for a
minute or two until almost crisp, then
remove from the pan with a draining
spoon and set aside.
• Peel the onion, slice it thinly, then
stir it into the remaining oil in the
shallow pan. Let it cook over a low to
moderate heat for 15 minutes or so,
stirring from time to time, until soft and
pale gold.
• Line a baking sheet with kitchen foil
and preheat an overhead (oven) grill. Cut
the potatoes into slices, each roughly the
thickness of a couple of $1 coins. Place
them flat on the baking sheet. Brush
each slice with a little groundnut or
vegetable oil, then season lightly with
salt and cook under the preheated grill
until they start to colour.
• Scatter the remaining curry leaves
into the onion and let them cook for a
minute or two. When they darken, stir
in the curry paste. Continue cooking for
a couple of minutes until the onion is
coated with the paste and very fragrant,
then stir in the yoghurt and remove
from the heat.
• When the potatoes are golden and
sizzling, serve with the curry sauce and
scatter with the reserved curry leaves.
Pea and wasabi croquettes
with pea shoots
Makes 8, serves 2. Ready in 30 minutes,
plus chilling time
Ingredients
500g shelled peas, fresh or frozen
15g tarragon
2-3 tsp wasabi paste
40g butter
2 egg yolks
40g breadcrumbs, dry, white such as
panko
To coat and fry:
2 eggs
4 large handfuls of breadcrumbs
vegetable or groundnut oil to shallow fry
To serve:
a handful of pea shoots, mint and
coriander
a little olive oil
a little lemon juice
Method
• Put a deep pan of water on to boil
and salt it lightly. When it is boiling, tip
in the peas and let them cook for about
4 minutes, a little longer for fresh peas,
then drain them. Strip the tarragon leaves
from their stems. You will end up with
about 10g.
• Tip the cooked peas into the bowl of
a food processor and reduce to a thick
purée, then add the tarragon leaves and
the butter. Beat the egg yolks, then stir
them into the puréed peas together with
the wasabi, breadcrumbs and a generous
seasoning of salt. Transfer to a mixing
bowl, cover and leave to chill.
• Gently shape the pea mixture into 8
barrel-shaped croquettes. (A little flour
on your hands will make this easier.)
• Break the eggs into a shallow dish
and beat lightly with a fork. Put the
breadcrumbs into a second shallow dish
or deep plate. Lower the croquettes, one
by one, into the beaten egg, then into
the breadcrumbs. Pat firmly to help the
crumbs stick to the croquettes, then lift
them out on to a baking sheet.
• Warm a 1cm deep layer of vegetable
or groundnut oil in a shallow pan.
Keeping at a moderate heat, lower the
croquettes into the oil and fry for a few
minutes until the underside is golden
and crisp. Gently turn them and cook the
other sides, then remove and drain on
kitchen paper.
• Toss together the pea shoots, mint
and coriander leaves, dress with a little
olive oil and lemon, then nestle the
croquettes among them.
