Jessica’s
superhero
saga ready
to take
off
• By Isabella Adams
KEEP AN eye out for a new
author called Jessi Dee, who has
just released her first book.
Not bad for a 7-year-old whose
real name is Jessica Dippenaar.
Jessica’s book Coco’s Adventure
is described as a superhero saga
that follows main character Coco
as he “takes his first steps towards
greatness”.
The pupil at Knights Stream
School in Halswell went to mum
Anneri Dippenaar with a request
to write a book just after her
seventh birthday.
Dippenaar said her daughter
had always been a good storyteller,
but the ability to write it all down
has only just caught up to her.
“Now that she has the ability to
put things to paper, she’s started
using that method more.
“I would see her in her bedroom
writing in the book and
then when I’m making dinner
she would come sit at the table
just writing. I definitely did not
prompt her.
WRITING TALENT: Jessica Dippenaar, 7, with mum Anneri. Jessica has written and selfpublished
superhero saga Coco’s Adventure.
“It was just amazing to see her
blossom into doing this herself.”
Once Jessica finished writing, a
professional editor was enlisted to
review the grammar and spelling,
while still encapsulating Jessica’s
original vision.
Illustrations were created
through Chatgpt, and then the
book was ready for publishing.
www.starnews.co.nz
They made copies to send to
family in South Africa, and also
donated a copy to her school.
Now, they’ve set up a website
where the book is available to
download or purchase.
“She doesn’t know how
incredibly awesome she is.
“Like to her it’s just, ‘mama,
why are you making such a big
deal out of this?’ And I’m like,
people don’t do this, Jessie baby.
Seven-year-olds don’t do this.”
Dippenaar said.
“Mama’s pride took over and
now I just want to tell the world
how awesome my daughter is.”
New patrol
finding
school
classrooms
unlocked
• By Isabella Adams
SCHOOL classrooms being left
unlocked is the most common
issue Halswell’s new community
patrol has faced since its launch.
Halswell Community Patrol
secretary Lynley Capon said
school security has been the
biggest problem to date.
“(The patrol has) found doors
unlocked and windows not
closed.
“It’s probably because of afterschool
activities, and people
haven’t been vigilant at the end of
their activities.”
Capon said they haven’t
received any reports of stolen
goods.
The patrol began its service at
the end of July, and a launch was
held in August to welcome its
patrol car.
The organisation is seeking
more members, having only 19 of
the desired 30.
“The more members we have,
the more patrols we can actually
do,” said Capon.
“At this stage we’re only on
Friday and Saturday nights and
our patrol is only four hours.
So the more members who are
trained, the more patrols can be
done.”
Capon said the patrol car was
paid for by a city council grant,
community donations and a quiz
night fundraiser.
Paralympian shares celebration with Ryman
ALISON SMITH’S sharp
shooting instincts memorably
took her to the Big Apple to
compete successfully for an air
rifle bronze model in the 1984
Paralympic Games.
Four decades on, in the same
year Ryman is celebrating its
40th anniversary, Alison, a
bronze medallist, has been
keeping a close eye on the Paris
2024 Paralympic Games along
with fellow residents at Ryman’s
Diana Isaac Retirement Village in
Mairehau.
For Alison, it was a memorable
games, not least for seeing
President Ronald Reagan
officially opening the New
York event supported by heavy
security, she remembers. More
than three years earlier, in March
1981, Reagan was the target
of an assassination attempt
by John Hinckley Jr outside
the Washington Hilton.
Alison remembers that at the
games, Reagan remained within
a very tight protective cordon.
“The big excitement was the
President of the United States was
arriving via helicopter to open
the games.
“I had never seen so many
policemen, and snipers on top of
the buildings. Four helicopters
arrived, hovering over the
stadium. Eventually one landed
and out hopped Ronald Reagan
along with his entourage,” she
says.
“A lot of us had never seen
anything like that . . . looking
around and seeing all these guys
in dark clothing with their rifles
at the ready.”
While Alison was competing in
New York, back in Christchurch,
Ryman co-founders Kevin
Hickman and John Ryder were
laying the foundations for what
would become a network of 40
villages across New Zealand and
eight in Victoria, Australia.
On September 19, Alison,
along with fellow residents, will
be celebrating Ryman’s 40th
anniversary at special events
being held at each village.
Alison is now enjoying life in a
townhouse and watching events
in Paris on TV. Other residents
are well aware of her Paralympic
efforts, especially with the 2024
games taking place.
There were lots of other
highlights from the 1984 trip to
the USA.
She and other Kiwi competitors
were provided accommodation
at Hofstra University campus in
Hempstead, New York.
Grid - The life and times of First World War fighter ace
Keith Caldwell by Adam Claasen
This gripping biography of Air Commodore Keith ‘Grid’ Caldwell CBE, MC, DFC & bar,
Croix de Guerre, tells the story of his remarkable exploits during the First World War.
Flying single-seat fighters against best of the German air force, including the Red
Baron’s Flying Circus and airmen such as Werner Voss, Caldwell accumulated 26
victories in aerial combat. Over his illustrious career he flew with numerous ‘stars’ of
the British air service, including Albert Ball, Billy Bishop and Mick Mannock. In the last
year of the war, aged only 22, he was given command of the new 74 Squadron. Under
his leadership the ‘Tigers’ become one of the war’s most feared and revered units.
Caldwell was a hero, a leader, and a man of great courage by any measure.
SHARP SHOOTER: Diana Isaac Retirement Village resident
Alison Smith shows off the air rifle bronze medal she won at
the 1984 Paralympic Games.
The accommodation was by
no means up to the standard of
paralympics today, but Alison has
no regrets about travelling such
distances and making the most of
the facilities available at the time.
“When I went it was pretty
basic,” she laughs.
“For transport they took the
seats out of one of the yellow
school buses and of course you
weren’t wearing seat belts or that
sort of thing, so you sort of held
on for grim death.”
Alison is the first and only
female shooting para athlete to
date to have represented New
Zealand at a Paralympic Games.
She won bronze in the women’s
air rifle integrated category.
Alison said every four years
the Paralympics are a reminder
of her mid-80s adventure,
particularly the accommodation
and transport to the venue,
though obviously times have
changed.
She remembers travelling
alongside two other Kiwi
paralympians, athlete Michael
O’Callaghan and field eventer
Denise Cook, to and from the
events. She remains in regular
contact with both.
Alison got into air rifle
shooting via the Canterbury
SEPTEMBER
Paraplegic Association, starting
first in archery, training with
disabled athlete Neroli Fairhall.
Then in the late 1970s she joined
in with a memorable ‘games
night’.
One of the air rifle tutors that
night at the Ollivers Rd rugby
league hall, Len Smith, later
became her husband.
Winning the bronze medal of
course meant a phone call home
to New Zealand, to share her
incredible news with her parents,
brother and three sisters.
In those days the games were
only set up for paraplegic and
quadriplegic competitors rather
than those with a much wider
range of disabilities.
“I competed in a threepositional
shoot competition:
prone, kneeling, and standing,
all from the wheelchair. It was
60 shots in each position …
I proudly came home with a
bronze medal,” Alison says.
In 1984, another competitor
was Graham Condon who
helped source a wheelchair from
Healing Industries at a discount
for Alison, to make her sporting
achievements easier.
Alison is upfront about her life.
She was born on September 13,
1950, minus her right leg, from
the hip, and the left, from the
upper third of the thigh, starting
life with artificial limbs.
Recently, Alison was proud to
be recognised as New Zealand’s
No. 53 Paralympian.
Bellringers group seeks recruits
to keep ancient melodies alive
• By Geoff Sloan
A GROUP of musicians are on a
mission to keep the dying art of
bell-ringing alive.
The Christ Church Cathedral
Handbell Ringers is looking for
new members to pass on their
skills and knowledge to, and
ensure the next generation can
still enjoy the art.
Handbell ringers captain
Andrew Cox said the hobby
combines music, exercise, and
teamwork.
“We all like music and it’s
something that’s unique – so
unique – and we just enjoy
playing.”
The playing of modern handbells
can be traced back to the
17th century.
“It originated from tower
bellringers, when they used to
practice in the winter and the
evenings,” Cox said.
“The church would be cold, so
they worked on handbells and
they could sit in the pub with a jug
of beer in one hand and a bell in
the other, and away they go.”
He said the group used to
have 11 members but it has now
dwindled to five.
“We shut down during Covid-19
for about 12 months, and we’ve
never been able to pick up the full
number since.”
ANCIENT ART: The Christ Church Cathedral Handbell Ringers
are on the hunt for new members. PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
Before the 2010 and 2011
earthquakes, the bellringers
regularly practiced at Christ
Church Cathedral. They restarted
again after their bells were
recovered from the rubble.
“It’s looking a bit bleak at the
moment,” Cox said.
“If only we could get another
three or four more players, that
would make all the difference.”
He said there is no religious
element to the group, all you need
to be a potential member is a basic
knowledge of music and the will
to keep the art alive.
Concert helps schoolhouse restoration
TWO VISITING choristers from
England performed as part of a
classical concert at Rapaki Marae,
to raise money for the restoration
of the old Rapaki schoolhouse.
The afternoon included a powhiri,
high tea and a performance
by The Canterbury Association
Oxfords Project.
The vocal quartet consisted
of James Parmeter and George
Blundell (from Christ Church,
Oxford) and Adrian Lowe
and Kimberley Wood (from
Christchurch).
More than 70 people attended
the concert, raising $2658 for the
old school restoration.
The schoolhouse is a rare example
of a 19th-century building
within a Ngāi Tahu settlement.
Built in the 1870s, it was part
of a network of village primary
schools established by the Native
School Department to provide
education for children in Ngāi
Tahu communities.
The restoration has involved significant
repairs, seismic strengthening,
and moving the building
to a less erosion-prone site on the
same section.
Said Te Rūnanga o Ngāti
Wheke kaumātua Donald Couch:
“Our old schoolhouse has served
us for 150 years, and with this
restoration, it will serve us and
the community for another 150
years.”
Attending the concert were
Banks Peninsula MP Vanessa
Weenink, former Port Hills MP
Ruth Dyson, and the Anglican
Bishop of Christchurch, Dr Peter
Carrell. HMNZS Canterbury
Commander Bronwyn Heslop
and 12 of her crew and Reserve
Forces director Clive Holmes
also went along. The concert was
organised by Nuk and Christine
Korako, Dr Te Maire Tau, Gabrielle
Huria and Haydn Rawstron.
Said Rawstron: “The Canterbury
Association endowment at Christ
Church, Oxford, pays for the
Oxfords Project and in turn
produces this vocal quartet.”
He paid tribute to the late Mary
Weston, whose patronage had
paid for project visits.
it comes to choosing the perfect heat
pump or air conditioning system for
their home or office since 2002.
Their team of expert sales people,
qualified electricians, heating and
Panasonic, Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin
They will recommend the most
energy-efficient and cost-effective system
Nowadays, customers are often
wanting whole home solutions to be
able to maintain even temperatures
throughout the home both in Winter
and Summer. This can be achieved by
using ducted systems or multi systems
and Enviro Master are experts in
designing, installing and commissioning
these systems.
Help is currently available with a
government subsidy offering 80 per cent
of the cost of a new heat pump up to
$3000 including GST.
The subsidy is part of the Warmer
Kiwi Homes initiative and is available
to Home owner/occupiers with a
Community Services Card, a SuperGold
combo card or who live in a low-income
area as determined by deciles 8-10 on
Enjoying the benefits
of prior preparation
The best meals are ones
you can prepare in advance,
writes Nigel Slater
THERE ARE PLUMP, crumb-coated
croquettes of peas and tarragon waiting
to pop into sizzling oil and slices of
potato, partly cooked and ready to toast
under the grill. The pea croquettes will
sit on a tangle of pea shoots and herbs.
The potatoes will get a sauce of sweet,
golden onion, curry paste and yoghurt.
Both are the sort of recipes you can
prepare in advance, leaving only the
cooking to the last minute.
Grilled potatoes with curry
yoghurt sauce
Serves 4. Ready in 45 minutes
Ingredients
400g potatoes, medium-sized
30 curry leaves
1 large onion
3 Tbsp ground nut vegetable oil, plus a
little extra
1-2 Tbsp mild curry paste
250ml yoghurt
Method
• Bring a deep pan of water to the boil,
then salt it generously. Peel the potatoes,
then add them, whole, to the water.
Let them cook for about 15 minutes or
until they are tender enough to pierce
easily with a metal skewer. Remove the
potatoes from the water and set aside to
cool a little.
• Warm the oil in a shallow pan,
scatter in half the curry leaves, fry for a
minute or two until almost crisp, then
remove from the pan with a draining
spoon and set aside.
• Peel the onion, slice it thinly, then
stir it into the remaining oil in the
shallow pan. Let it cook over a low to
moderate heat for 15 minutes or so,
stirring from time to time, until soft and
pale gold.
• Line a baking sheet with kitchen foil
and preheat an overhead (oven) grill. Cut
the potatoes into slices, each roughly the
thickness of a couple of $1 coins. Place
them flat on the baking sheet. Brush
each slice with a little groundnut or
vegetable oil, then season lightly with
salt and cook under the preheated grill
until they start to colour.
• Scatter the remaining curry leaves
into the onion and let them cook for a
minute or two. When they darken, stir
in the curry paste. Continue cooking for
a couple of minutes until the onion is
coated with the paste and very fragrant,
then stir in the yoghurt and remove
from the heat.
• When the potatoes are golden and
sizzling, serve with the curry sauce and
scatter with the reserved curry leaves.
Pea and wasabi croquettes
with pea shoots
Makes 8, serves 2. Ready in 30 minutes,
plus chilling time
Ingredients
500g shelled peas, fresh or frozen
15g tarragon
2-3 tsp wasabi paste
40g butter
2 egg yolks
40g breadcrumbs, dry, white such as
panko
To coat and fry:
2 eggs
4 large handfuls of breadcrumbs
vegetable or groundnut oil to shallow fry
To serve:
a handful of pea shoots, mint and
coriander
a little olive oil
a little lemon juice
Method
• Put a deep pan of water on to boil
and salt it lightly. When it is boiling, tip
in the peas and let them cook for about
4 minutes, a little longer for fresh peas,
then drain them. Strip the tarragon leaves
from their stems. You will end up with
about 10g.
• Tip the cooked peas into the bowl of
a food processor and reduce to a thick
purée, then add the tarragon leaves and
the butter. Beat the egg yolks, then stir
them into the puréed peas together with
the wasabi, breadcrumbs and a generous
seasoning of salt. Transfer to a mixing
bowl, cover and leave to chill.
• Gently shape the pea mixture into 8
barrel-shaped croquettes. (A little flour
on your hands will make this easier.)
• Break the eggs into a shallow dish
and beat lightly with a fork. Put the
breadcrumbs into a second shallow dish
or deep plate. Lower the croquettes, one
by one, into the beaten egg, then into
the breadcrumbs. Pat firmly to help the
crumbs stick to the croquettes, then lift
them out on to a baking sheet.
• Warm a 1cm deep layer of vegetable
or groundnut oil in a shallow pan.
Keeping at a moderate heat, lower the
croquettes into the oil and fry for a few
minutes until the underside is golden
and crisp. Gently turn them and cook the
other sides, then remove and drain on
kitchen paper.
• Toss together the pea shoots, mint
and coriander leaves, dress with a little
olive oil and lemon, then nestle the
croquettes among them.

The humble heart of a delicious meal
Whether it’s small, waxy
new potatoes in a salad
or big floury spuds best
for baking, you can
always turn to spuds for
satisfaction, writes Nigel
Slater
Jacket potatoes with
cauliflower and parmesan
The cauliflower needs to be
quite soft for this, so I cook it for
longer than usual, until a skewer
or the point of a knife slides
easily through it. The stalks, cut
into thick coins, are good here,
too. I mash the potato with the
flat paddle attachment of a food
mixer, but a potato masher or
ricer will also work.
Ingredients
Serves 3
6 medium baking potatoes
1 cauliflower, about 500g
750ml milk
2 bay leaves
50g butter
75g parmesan cheese, grated,
plus a little more
4 heaped Tbsp parsley leaves
Method
• Preheat the oven to 180°C.
Bake the potatoes for about an
hour, depending on their size.
• Break the cauliflower into
florets, cut the stalks into small
pieces, then put them into a
saucepan with the milk and bay
leaves. Season with ground black
pepper and a little salt then
bring almost to the boil. As the
milk starts to bubble, lower the
heat so the cauliflower simmers
gently.
• When the cauliflower is
tender – it should take about 25
minutes but test it with the point
of a knife (if it slides through
easily then it is done) – remove
with a draining spoon, saving
the milk and set aside.
• Remove a “lid” from each
of the potatoes – a slice large
enough for you to scoop out the
inside with a spoon.
• Put the potato flesh into the
bowl of a food mixer with the
butter and mash till smooth,
adding enough of the warm
reserved milk to make a soft
but not sloppy purée (anything
from 100-250ml). Mix in the
parmesan cheese and the cooked
cauliflower and chopped parsley.
Check the seasoning, adding salt
and pepper as you wish.
• Heat an overhead grill. Place
the empty potato shells and
their tops on a baking sheet or
grill pan, fill the potatoes and
their lids with the potato and
cauliflower cheese mixture then
dust lightly with a little more
parmesan. Place under the
heated grill until the surface is
lightly golden and the sauce is
bubbling.
Potatoes, mussels, dill
Use any potatoes for this,
but the waxy, yellow-fleshed
varieties are particularly
pleasing with the mussels. Dress
them while they are still warm
so they soak up more of the
dressing. If you don’t want to
add the cream to the dressing
then double up on the olive oil,
vinegar and honey.
Ingredients
Serves 3-4
750g small, waxy-fleshed
potatoes
500g mussels
2 heaped tsp Dijon mustard
1 Tbsp cider vinegar
2 tsp honey
50ml double cream
50ml olive oil
2 Tbsp dill fronds chopped, plus
a little more to finish
Method
• Bring a deep pan of water to
the boil, then salt it generously.
Scrub the potatoes, there is no
need to peel them (though you
can if you wish), then cook in
the boiling water until tender
to the point of a knife – about
15-20 minutes depending on
their size.
• Wash the mussels, tugging
out any beards and discarding
any with broken shells. Tap
each one on the side of the sink;
it should close immediately.
Discard any that don’t.
• Put them into a deep
saucepan with a splash of water,
cover tightly with a lid, place
over a high heat then cook for
3-5 minutes or so, shaking the
pan from time to time, until
the shells open. As soon as the
mussels are open, remove from
the heat and set aside for a few
minutes to cool.
• Remove each mussel from its
shell and set aside.
• Make the dressing: using
a fork or small whisk, beat
together the mustard, cider
vinegar, honey, cream and olive
oil then stir in a good grinding
of black pepper and the dill
fronds.
• Slice the potatoes thickly
into coins, then toss, while
they are still warm, with the
dressing. Transfer to a serving
dish and scatter the mussels
over. Finish with a little
chopped dill.
