Burglar caught dealing
drugs while out on bail
Sign of the Kiwi break-in
among man’s convictions
• By Ric Stevens
A MAN with a criminal history
21 pages long made 51 drug deals
by text message in three months
while confined at home on a
monitoring bracelet.
Tony Dean Adams, 36, was
wearing the bracelet for other
offending, including the burglary
of the 117-year-old Sign of the
Kiwi café on Summit Rd.
When police raided his house,
they found two shotguns,
ammunition, two homemade
tasers disguised as water pistols,
90.64g of methamphetamine,
18.68g of cannabis, and $6870 in
cash.
They also found items associated
with drug dealing and drug
use: a quantity of plastic bags,
three sets of electronic scales,
cellphones, numerous glass and
rubber bongs, cannabis grinders,
glass pipes, and an empty laundry
detergent container with a false
bottom used to hide things.
The house was protected by an
elaborate camera system, with
monitor screens in the lounge
and bedroom, together with an
audio alert to warn Adams when
someone came up the drive.
In June, Adams was sentenced
in the district court to five years
in prison for two sets of offending
during 2023 and early this year.
He then appealed that sentence
to the High Court as being
“manifestly excessive”.
Justice Jonathan Eaton reduced
his prison term on appeal to
four years and two months after
reviewing the district court’s
assessments of Adams’ previous
convictions and prospects for
rehabilitation.
Justice Eaton’s High Court
decision contains some of the
numbers detailing Adams’
criminal history, along with
the latest offences to which he
pleaded guilty.
BREAK-IN: Tony Dean
Adams and an associate
were caught on CCTV during
a burglary at the Sign of the
Kiwi café in April last year.
He said that in the early
morning of April 15 last year,
Adams was sitting in a car
outside the Sign of the Kiwi, and
waited while an associate broke
down the front door to try to
gain entry.
Pleasant School’s year
5/6 hockey team beat 19
Canterbury primary school
teams to win the Sports
Canterbury winter hockey
tournament last Thursday
at Nunweek Park. It was
an outstanding win for the
team, who qualified for the
Canterbury tournament
after being undefeated
in the south-east zones
tournament three weeks
ago. Coach Alex Simmonds
was impressed at how the
players rose to the challenge
throughout their six
tournament games.
NEWS 5
“They were persistent in
tackles and their calling and
passing was fantastic. Even
in front of the goal there
wasn’t any selfish play – if
another team mate had a
better shot, they passed it!
It’s such a well-deserved
win for the players, who
have really worked on
their skills this season with
Carlton Redcliffs Hockey
Club.” Simmonds said
the Mt Pleasant players
are all so proud to be this
year’s Canterbury school
champions. The school
is already planning its
tournament team for 2025.
Phone data reveals extensive drug trade
• From page 1
The associate also went into a
garage at the historic building
and took various items.
He got back into the car and
Adams drove away “at speed”,
but was stopped by police a short
time later.
The car was searched and
police found a lock-picking set, a
window punch tool, a small axe
and a large number of car keys,
along with 18.3g of cannabis leaf
and 0.15g of meth.
In the vehicle’s rear seat, they
found a paintball gun and an
imitation pistol. When they took
Adams into custody, they found
a glass pipe with meth residue
hidden in his underwear.
Adams refused to provide
police with the pin code to his
phone.
He was released on electronically
monitored bail and later
pleaded guilty to burglary, possession
of cannabis, possession of
meth, possession of meth utensils
and refusing to comply with his
obligations for a police search.
While he was on bail, police
obtained an order giving them
access to Adams’ phone data.
“Data analysed on (Adams’)
phone for the period August 9
to November 9, 2023, showed
he was regularly dealing
both methamphetamine and
cannabis,” Justice Eaton said.
“During this period he made 51
identified drug deals through text
message, 26 of which were linked
to methamphetamine, three to
the selling of cannabis and 22 of
which could not be attributed to
either drug.”
After his home was raided,
Adams pleaded guilty to
supplying methamphetamine,
selling cannabis, possessing meth
for supply, possessing cannabis
for supply and unlawfully
possessing firearms.
Justice Eaton said in addition
This report was produced by
Open Justice – Te Pātītī, an
NZME initiative funded by
NZ on Air
to being on EM bail when he was
dealing drugs, Adams was also
serving a sentence of intensive
supervision under a probation
officer for driving while
disqualified, burglary, receiving
and theft.
Before that, he was sentenced
to a 12-month prison sentence for
his 34th offence of driving while
disqualified.
“In total, Mr Adams has
accumulated 10 convictions
for possessing or procuring
controlled drugs or possessing
drug utensils over the last 10
years or so,” Justice Eaton said.
“Three of these convictions
relate to cannabis, one to ecstasy
and six to methamphetamine.
“His adult criminal history
is also littered with driving
offences (approximately 35),
dishonesty offences including
burglary (approximately 34) and
breaches of sentence and release
conditions (approximately 15).”
Justice Eaton said he had no
doubt the latest offending was
driven by drug addiction.
Adams had acknowledged
his offending escalated from
committing burglary and car
thefts and other dishonesty
offending to feed his drug habit,
to drug dealing from home to
serve the same purpose.
He had no convictions for
firearms or ammunition until
this year.
Ship’s trainees, veteran on a visit
The HMNZS Canterbury
was recently back
in its home port of
Lyttelton for a five-day
visit. Delphine Herbert
had the chance to go
onboard
THE ROYAL New Zealand
Navy vessel, the HMNZS
Canterbury, has spent the
past month gearing up for an
international deployment. That’s
included visits to Lyttelton,
Napier and Wellington, while
training junior officers for future
operations.
The vessel’s primary mission is
to deploy personnel, vehicles and
cargo, either at ports or using
landing craft, helicopter airlifts
or boats. It has its own mini hospital,
with two ward-like rooms
and the equipment to perform
surgery, if necessary.
Onboard were 154 sailors, as
well as 13 current trainees.
Also onboard for a fleeting
visit was 104-year-old WW2
Naval Officer, Lieutenant
(retired) Keith Williamson.
Ship commander Bronwyn
Heslop gave the Canterburybased
veteran and his family a
tour of the ship, showing him
the updates in technology since
he finished his service almost 80
years ago.
Keith enlisted in the Royal
Navy in 1941 and completed
basic training in the UK before
being deployed on the HMS
Stork, escorting merchant ships
between Liverpool and Gibraltar.
Once commissioned, he joined
Combined Operations, working
on Landing Craft Infantry –
Large (LCI-L) ships with the
army to deliver troops to theatre.
“What amuses me is I didn’t
do anything exceptional in my
navy career. I was very ordinary
but, because I’m 104, that seems
to make me a bit different,” Keith
told Seven Sharp.
The HMNZS Canterbury is
regularly deployed to the Pacific,
and Heslop said the training
carried out during Canterbury’s
stint in New Zealand was
important.
“Just to train people to give
them experience of how to
conduct themselves both at sea
and ashore.
“Just trying to bring back some
of the training that we’ve missed
with attrition and with Covid-19
and an absence of ships readily
available at sea.”
Cantabrian Ordinary Hydrographic
Systems operator Cameron
Norton said it had been
exciting to sail into an area with
which he was familiar.
‘’It was amazing, like being
able to be on the foc’s’le (forward
deck) as we’re driving into
Lyttelton and get to see this place
again, like on a navy ship. It was
pretty cool.”
Ordinary Hydrographic
Systems operator James Marsh
agreed.
“Yeah, it was quite exciting
just coming down the coast and
seeing places that you recognise
and stuff like that.”
Ensign Bravo Watchkeeper
under training Renèe Woodward
said trainees gained valuable
first-hand experience.
While the days could be busy,
the crew were well looked after
and their tummies were kept
full.
“We always get Duff, so Duff is
dessert, so it will be like biscuits
or slice or anything. It’s really
good. It’s 10 out 10 . . . food’s a
pretty big morale-booster for the
ship’s company, so food is a very
integral part of keeping the ship
moving and going forward.”
Heslop said the Canterbury
was a unique vessel.
“The ship is the coolest in the
world because it is Army, Air
Force and Navy together.
“And so our motto is called
While in port Heslop and 12
of her crew attended a concert
at Rapaki Marae, to help raise
money for the restoration of the
old Rapaki schoolhouse.
The Canterbury was last
in Lyttelton to help with the
response to Cyclone Gabrielle in
February 2023. It was stationed
at Campbell and Auckland
Islands when the storm hit but
headed back to the mainland.
Commander Heslop said the
co-ordination was incredible.
“A huge response, Ngāi Tahu
were amazing and brought
generators, the army brought
bridges over from Burnham, and
lots and lots of stores.
“We did lots and lots of
shopping for feminine products
and nappies and things to
take up, and then we sailed for
Napier.”
HMNZS Canterbury’s next
destination is Samoa for the
Commonwealth Heads of
Government meeting with King
Charles in October.
The vessel will be back in
Lyttelton next year for the 15th
anniversary of the Christchurch
earthquakes.
High schools excel at big tourneys
Christchurch schools
have seen success at
national and regional
level during last week’s
New Zealand and
South Island secondary
school tournaments.
Sports reporter Sam
competitions
Netball
St Margaret’s took out the South
Island netball competition at Ngā
Puna Wai, beating Dunedin’s
Columba College 39-28 in the
final.
The win was the school’s third
South Island title this year, following
the year 9 and 10 teams’
victories in their respective
competitions.
St Margaret’s beat Christchurch
Girls’ High School 40-27 in the
semi-final before their win over
Columba in the final.
Girls’ High played St Andrew’s
College – who lost 37-36 to
Columba in their semi-final – in
the third-place playoff, which was
won 37-28 by Girls’ High.
Basketball
St Andrew’s College’s girls basketball
team (top right) won the
South Island competition, adding
to the Whelan Trophy they won
the week before.
The final was a rematch with
Kaiapoi High School, who they
beat in the Whelan final, and the
result was no different this time/
St Andrew’s came away with a
tense 67-65 win.
St Andrew’s had previously
swept aside Columba in their
semi-final before playing Kaiapoi
– who beat Christchurch Girls’
High in the other semi-final.
Girls’ High went down to
Columba, 80-50, in the playoff
for third.
Christ’s College fell just short
of taking out the boys’ competition,
losing 94-84 to Waimea
College in the final. St Andrew’s
boys’ team finished fourth, losing
83-60 to Rangiora High School in
the third-place playoff.
Football
St Thomas’ boys’ and St Andrew’s
girls’ teams recorded their
best-ever placings at a national
premier tournament.
St Andrew’s finished third in
the girls’ competition, beating
Epsom Grammar 4-3 in a penalty
shoot-out to claim bronze after a
0-0 draw.
Their 1-0 loss to Auckland’s
Baradene College in the semi-final
the previous day saw them
narrowly miss out on making
their first-ever final.
In the boys’ competition, St
Thomas’ run to the semi-finals
was ended by Tauranga Boys’
High School in a shoot-out, with
Tauranga winning 5-3 on penalties
after a 2-2 draw.
St Thomas then fell 3-0 to last
year’s champions Westlake Boys
High School (Auckland) in their
third-place playoff.
Rugby League
St Thomas of Canterbury College
took out their second consecutive
national rugby league title with
a 24-18 victory over Auckland’s
De La Salle College in the final
of the NZRL national secondary
Woman Uninterrupted
by Brodie Kane
Yarns on a life lived at a million miles, from beloved broadcaster, podcaster and
go-getter Brodie Kane
First up: this is absolutely not a guide to life. I’ve done some impressive stuff, but
I’ve also slept on the floor of an old Greek man’s house and lost my dignity in the
Brunei jungle. I say yes to everything this life has to offer - I’m from the ‘women
can have it all’ club - and, boy, have I got the stories to show for it.
From surf-lifesaving to a hungover Army deployment, being broke with a gum
infection in Europe, spooning Richie McCaw on a mountain,
improvising make-up for Paul Holmes, running my first
ultra-marathon and reinventing myself after redundancy:
every wild, brilliant and hilarious experience has taught me
something new. Whether it’s how not to care about being
judged, how to fake it till you make it, how to throw yourself
into the unknown or how to push through the pit of despair,
I’ve come to love that we are all works in progress. If I fail
from time to time, that’s okay too.
Open the book of this open book (me). I want to show you the raw,
the real and the vulnerable of a full-volume life and how the greatest moments -
or at the very least the greatest yarns - come about by just giving it a crack.
This lovely home was only on the market for 13 days before
we received a pre-auction offer and the new family can’t
wait to move in. My owners did an amazing job readying the
home for sale and presenting it perfectly to visitors.
I had over 30 buyer groups through the door at only 5 open
homes! A number of the visitors were wanting to move
into the Cashmere High zone, upsizing and wanting an
High demand for quality properties in Hillsborough
How mentorship helped
propel a drone startup
GEORGE KHELLA is on a mission to
tackle wildfires using drone technology.
His company, Narix FSD, is developing a
system of autonomous drones to detect and
suppress fires before they can spread.
However, the project didn’t just spring
from technical know-how; it was shaped
by the guidance of a dedicated mentor
through Business Mentors New Zealand.
In mid-2022, George recognised the
need for expert advice to overcome the
hurdles of turning his concept into a viable
product.
Despite his engineering background and
deep interest in drones, he faced challenges.
“I needed business advice on commercialisation
and production, especially in
a complex field like unmanned aviation,”
George recalls.
This is where mentorship played a crucial
role. George approached Business Mentors
New Zealand and was paired with Michael
Durie, whose expertise proved invaluable.
“Michael helped me understand the
business process, marketing needs, and the
importance of networking and pitching,”
George explains.
One of the most significant impacts of
the mentorship was on George’s approach
to marketing and networking. Michael
guided him through developing comprehensive
marketing plans.
The mentorship also opened doors.
Michael facilitated introductions to
technical experts and industry players,
expanding George’s network and providing
access to resources that were crucial for
advancing the project.
Michael’s support also helped George
SPONSORED CONTENT
George Khella, right, with mentor
Michael Durie.
navigate the complexities of running a
startup and avoid common pitfalls.
“One of the most impactful pieces of
advice, was not to try to do everything
alone,” George says.
“Because I’m the sole founder and
owner, I’ve been doing everything myself.
So, it’s about looking at how we can get
other people involved to help with the
load.”
The mentorship experience also included
participation in programmes such as the
UC Food, Fibre, and Agritech Challenge
and the Ministry of Awesome Founder
Catalyst programme.
Narix FSD’s drone system for wildfire
management is progressing towards its
prototype stage, with plans for broader
deployment in the near future.
George says the impact of mentorship
through Business Mentors New Zealand
has been an invaluable part of his
entrepreneurial journey so far.
Two arrested after
sting on wreckers
TWO MEN have been arrested over the
processing of stolen cars by wreckers in
Christchurch and Upper Hutt.
The men, aged 21 and 39, were arrested
as police conducted simultaneous warrants
on Thursday last week.
Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Sarah
Graham said they were charged with
receiving stolen vehicles and breaching the
Secondhand Dealers and Pawnbrokers Act
2004.
Police were also taking restraint action
under the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery)
Act 2009. They would not disclose what
the assets were, nor their value.
Police believed the two auto-dismantlers
were fuelling vehicle thefts in their areas.
“In Canterbury, an investigation into
a rise in car crime began in March and
came to centre on two auto-dismantlers
yards, one in Christchurch and the other
in Upper Hutt.”
A six-month police operation found
they were buying multiple stolen cars for
much less than the cars were worth.
“After half a year of work by police tactical
crime units, asset recovery units, and
Customs New Zealand, we had sufficient
evidence to execute (Thursday’s) simultaneous
warrants.
“The investigations into this activity are
very much ongoing and are the reason
why police have restrained assets,” Graham
said.
Detective Inspector Haley Ryan said
Wellington police had been running
Operate Drake for more than a year, to
combat rising vehicle thefts in the region.
She said they believed most of the vehicles
not recovered were being dismantled
and exported overseas.
“Stolen commercial vehicles have much
more value to the receiver being dismantled
and sold for parts versus them being
rebirthed and sold.”
It would be naive to think other wrecking
businesses weren’t involved in similar
activities, Ryan said.
Graham said police wouldn’t rule out
further arrests.
“This is the second auto-dismantler to
be prosecuted in Christchurch in the last
year in relation to similar offending.”
Tiny SUV packed with pep and personality
THE IGNIS, along with the new
generation Jimny are the funky,
fun and affordable members of the
otherwise staid Suzuki NZ model
line-up.
They are smallest new SUVs
sold but have giant-sized personalities.
Along with the popular
Swift hatch they are driving the
brand’s continuing strong sales
growth here. It seems us Kiwis
love Suzukis and our loyalty to the
brand is rock solid.
One of the main reasons they
are in this enviable position is
down to an appealing mini and
compact urban SUV range. In
today’s world of rising prices they
are affordable new vehicles people
want and are reliable and cheap
to run. This takes on even greater
importance with tougher economic
times ahead.
With a unique design and
trendy, yet slightly retro, appearance,
the Ignis made a triumphant
return in 2016 after a long absence,
having an almost immediate
and positive impact.
With its distinctive SUV looks
and roomy passenger cabin, as
well as sharp pricing, the Ignis
ticks a lot of boxes for those on a
limited new car budget.
It instantly gets runs on the
board with its cute front end,
chunky wheel arches and eyecatching
angled roofline.
I like how the styling touches
pay homage to previous Suzuki
models from the mists of time.
These include the “C” pillar slits
from the 1970s Giugiaro-designed
Fronte coupe, while the clamshellshaped
bonnet and guard garnish
are a nod to the original 1988
Vitara SUV.
Plenty of smart thinking has
gone into the Ignis. A lot has been
applied to what has been a fairly
dramatic weight loss programme
for this model, lessening the load
on the engine and chassis, laying
the foundations for more assured
handling. Every 100kg shed,
equates to a 5-6 per cent improvement
in fuel efficiency.
Advances in high-tensile steel
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
manufacturing with fewer welds
and joins, all help the Ignis tip the
scales at a lean 820kg in manual
transmission form and 865kg in
the automatic.
The three-strong model line-up
leads off with the $22,990 GLX
manual, with a $1500 premium
for the automatic. The higher spec
LTD being reviewed here is only
available as an automatic and sells
for $26,500.
A 1.2-litre 4-cylinder, 16-valve
double overhead camshaft engine
is common across all three models.
This multi-point fuel injected
powerplant has variable valve
timing technology and produces
66kW and 12Nm of torque at 4400
rpm.
Dualjet engine technology features
twin fuel injectors for greater
fuel economy. Improved thermal
efficiency and low-friction technology
reduce engine emissions.
It does this brilliantly, with the
manual producing just 107 grams
per litre of CO2, and the automatic
slightly more at 114 grams
per litre. These figures are better
than several hybrid models, which
cost considerably more than the
humble Ignis.
While these aren’t the ingredients
for fire-breathing performance,
the engine has sufficient
flexibility and responsiveness to
satisfy most owners without sending
their pulses racing.
Acceleration is lively and the
motor shows far more tenacity
than its modest capacity would
suggest but at higher revs it does
become coarse and lumpy. In
terms of power and torque, the
motor has changed little from
its days in the mini sized 2008
Suzuki Splash. This was good for
69kW of maximum power.
The automatic in the test car
proved smooth and efficient in
lower speed urban driving. At
open road pace it’s less agreeable,
proving slow to kick down under
hard acceleration when you need
that extra burst of power. While
the revs rise appreciably, along
with your hopes for more oomph,
these never materialise.
The 1.0-litre turbo in the Suzuki
Swift hatch would transform
the Ignis, and most likely the
price upwards, and this would
be detrimental to what is after a
vehicle for the cost-conscious new
vehicle buyer.
The cabin is modern, inviting
and offers a decent amount
of space for a diminutive hatch.
There is plenty of head and
legroom for front and rear occupants,
while good ground
clearance makes it easy to enter
and leave.
An elevated seating position
ensures great all-round visibility.
The LTD includes two individual
sliding and reclining rear seats.
The load area with the rear seats
in use is a handy 271-litres, extending
to 1104-litres with both
folded down.
For such a small car, this one
is big on safety equipment with
electronic stability programme
(ESP), brake assist, six airbags
and side impact beams. CVT
models have hill holding control
and shift lock. Pedestrian protection
is to the fore with extra shock
absorption built into the bonnet,
front wiper area, front bumper
and bonnet lip to reduce collision
impact. A decoupling mechanism
for brake and clutch pedals, an
ISOFIX child seat restraint system
and child seat tether anchorages
are standard.
Ratings out of 10: Performance 6; Handling 6; Build Quality
6; Comfort 5; Passenger and Load Space 7; Value for
money: 7; Safety – Not rated.
Overall points out of 10: 6.5
The LTD is well appointed with
cruise control with speed limiter,
power steering, electric windows
and electrically adjustable door
mirrors. A computer displays
fuel consumption (instantaneous
and average), six-speaker audio
system, Bluetooth audiostreaming
and hands-free calling,
and 60:40 folding rear seats.
Other standard features worth
a mention include keyless entry
with push button start, Apple
CarPlay, Android Auto and a
reversing camera.
Playful and surprisingly composed
road holding are a good
fit with the vehicle’s effervescent
personality. However, being taller
and narrower than other cars in
this class, body lean enters the
handling frame sooner when
nudging things along through
tight corners or over undulating
terrain. This only becomes if you
continue to unreasonably push
the vehicles handling limits.
The steering is light and not
as direct as I prefer, but fine for
the around-town driving life
this car is designed for. Another
plus for urbanites is the vehicle’s
excellent turn-on-a-dime 4.7
metre turning circle, that makes
light work of U-turns in narrow
streets.
Mid-Century Maximised
318 Cannon Hill Crescent, Mount Pleasant
3 bedrooms, 1 living, 2 bathrooms, 1 carport
Situated on the coveted lower slopes, this time-honoured residence reflects an
exceptional architectural pedigree shaped by masterful minds across the ages.
John Trengrove’s original 1960s vision that harnessed intimate lower slopes
views and immense sunlight has been elevated through Sheppard and Rout’s
extensions and recent enhancements by Stephen Fitzgerald, maintaining the
mid-century integrity while introducing a modern aesthetic.
The freshly repainted interiors showcase an interplay of eras, where
quintessential mid-century elements like cork floors, sloped ceilings, and a splitlevel
layout are enriched by quality fixtures, feature wallpaper, contemporary
light fittings, new carpet, a brand-new kitchen and bespoke tiled bathrooms,
thoughtfully curated alongside an interior that honours the home’s enduring
character.
The home offers panoramic views of the estuary, city, ocean, and Alps, with
large windows and thoughtfully placed decks blurring the lines between interior
comfort and outdoor splendour.
Reflecting this design ethos, the kitchen features high-end appliances and doors
to the rear deck, perfectly aligned for a picturesque outlook. Connecting to
the lounge, the sun-drenched deck invites late afternoon relaxation, while the
landscaped garden and flat lawn offer a peaceful escape.
Skyline Sanctuary
1 Ridgeway Place, Sumner
4 bedrooms, 2 living, 2 bathrooms, 1 car garaging
Magnificently immersed in the landscape, this contemporary residence fosters
an intimate connection with nature, overlooking rural hillsides and the ocean
from its privileged position on the upper slopes of Richmond Hill.
Demonstrating the finesse of its 2020 completion, the home flawlessly
complements the surroundings, presenting a living experience that is as refined
as it is awe-inspiring.
Encased in matte black aluminium and distinguished by schist stone accents,
this 222sqm layout unveils expansive glazing and overheight ceilings that
masterfully frame sweeping vistas across Sumner, the hills, valley, and endless
ocean horizon beyond.
Defined by a commanding schist wall, the open-plan living, kitchen, and dining
area reveal a quiet sophistication, where a sleek gas fire and a David Trubridge
light merge utility with visual allure.
With a focus on fluidity, this space flows onto the wraparound deck and lawn and
offers a clear view of the idyllic swim spa and plunge pool, catering to leisure and
an entertainer’s lifestyle.
Occupying an approx 1594sqm corner section with a flat aspect, this home
capitalises on its tranquil setting while remaining closely connected to walking
trails and Sumner’s vibrant amenities, where the beach, popular cafes, and a
wealth of conveniences are just moments away, making it a valuable find for
families and lovers of the outdoors.
