YOUR HEALTH IS YOUR WEALTH
Your health is truly your greatest wealth. Good health
allows you to enjoy life fully, pursue your passions,
and maintain meaningful relationships. Without it, even
material wealth can feel hollow, as poor health limits your
ability to work, travel, and engage with others. Moreover,
maintaining good health helps prevent costly medical
treatments, making it a wise investment for your future.
Supporting good health throughout life requires a
balanced focus on both physical and mental well-being.
Here are some key ways to nurture your health over time:
Balanced Diet: Eating a variety of nutritious foods—rich
in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and
healthy fats—ensures your body receives the necessary
vitamins and minerals. Limiting processed foods and
excessive sugar helps prevent chronic diseases such as
heart disease and diabetes.
Stress and Anxiety Management: Managing stress
and anxiety is a vital component of long-term health.
Chronic stress negatively impacts both the mind and
body, leading to conditions like high blood pressure,
depression, and weakened immunity. Developing coping
mechanisms, such as mindfulness, meditation, yoga, or
simply engaging in hobbies you enjoy, can significantly
reduce stress levels and enhance mental resilience.
Prioritising time for relaxation and mental restoration is
just as important as exercise or diet.
Mental Health Focus: Just as you attend to your physical
health, actively caring for your mental well-being is crucial.
Regularly checking in with yourself, seeking support when
needed, and engaging in activities that bring you joy and
fulfilment all contribute to a healthy mind.
Regular Exercise: Physical activity is essential for
maintaining fitness, flexibility, and cardiovascular health.
Engaging in 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week,
such as walking or cycling, boosts energy levels and
promotes a positive mood by releasing endorphins.
Adequate Sleep: Quality sleep is crucial for physical
recovery and mental clarity. Adults should aim for 7-9
hours of restful sleep per night to support overall health,
improve concentration, and maintain emotional balance.
Start 2024 off with new challenges!
Fitness for all ages and levels!
Whether it be a circuit class outdoors or an Indoor
beginners Pilates class, the aim is to get fit and healthy,
strong and supple but also enjoy doing it!
We believe that exercise is a social occasion, but that hard
work goes hand in hand with it!
ADVERTISING FEATURE
Boarding communities
celebrating
global unity
Boarding schools are home to vibrant and diverse
communities. These communities are immersive and play a
significant role in shaping the lives of young people...
For those who make the decision
to board, the experience opens an
environment which can broaden
perspectives, enhance learning
experiences and develop global
awareness.
Boarding is a unique environment
where global perspectives converge
with respect for one-another, breaking
down barriers and broadening students’
worldviews. These cross-cultural
exchanges allow students to learn from
one another’s traditions, languages,
and viewpoints, fostering respect and
understanding.
The Boarding Schools’ Association
(BSA) represents member boarding
schools in over 40 countries and has
long advocated the value found in the
multicultural and multinational world of
boarding.
Living with peers from different
countries and cultures enhances global
awareness and prepares students for life
in an increasingly interconnected world.
Meeting and developing friendships with
individuals from diverse backgrounds
also has the power to enrich a
student’s learning experience, making
it more dynamic and multifaceted. As
a result, students who board develop
a comprehensive understanding of
the world, which builds empathy,
acceptance and reduces bias.
Each year in October, BSA celebrates
International Boarding Day, a day which
highlights the sense of community,
camaraderie, and personal growth
fostered within boarding education.
International Boarding Day aims to
create an opportunity to reflect on
the invaluable life skills, friendships,
and independence cultivated in these
settings, while also celebrating and
sharing experiences of inclusive,
supportive boarding school
communities across the globe.
This year, the theme is ‘Global
Unity’, designed to bring boarding
communities across the world together.
This is especially important in the
current global context.
BSA Group encompasses five
other associations in the education,
safeguarding and health/wellbeing
sectors and has just launched a new
dedicated association to support
excellence in equity, diversity and
inclusion. The Inclusion and Equity
Leadership Association (IELA)
represents any school, organisation,
association, agency or individual
involved or interested in EDI in the UK
or internationally.
IELA will exist to support schools, as
well as other organisations, to further
their equity, diversity and inclusion
provision. A boarding experience which
allows communities to feel valued and
respected are those which promote an
inclusive school culture where diversity
is celebrated.
Many factors come into play when
considering a boarding education.
Belonging and inclusion is an important
one. If you are searching for a boarding
school for your child, know that they are
places where young people can truly be
themselves.
A New
Chapter
Begins:
Stroud School becomes
King Edward VI
Preparatory School
We are excited to unveil the rebranding
of Stroud School as King Edward VI
Preparatory School, marking the next step
in our thriving, more than a decade long
partnership with King Edward VI School.
This exciting development reaffirms our
commitment to delivering outstanding
education for children from ages 2 to 18.
With this launch, King Edward VI School
now offers a fully integrated educational
journey through four distinct stages:
King Edward VI Nursery: Nursery
paragraph: Accepting children as young
as two, the nursery operates year-round
and creates a nurturing and stimulating
environment for our youngest pupils. The
recent development of “Little Meadow,”
our Early Years nature area, enhances the
children’s early learning experiences. The
nursery is located on the KES Prep site in
Romsey.
King Edward VI Preparatory School: Set
in the picturesque Romsey countryside,
our prep school offers an engaging
and challenging curriculum that ignites
a passion for learning. We focus on
cultivating each child’s strengths, setting
a strong foundation for future academic
and personal achievements.
King Edward VI School: With over 470
years of history, the senior school is
known for its academic rigour and focus
on character development. Beyond
preparing students for exams, we equip
them with the skills needed for life,
offering a wide range of co-curricular
activities to ensure they leave as wellrounded
individuals.
King Edward VI Sixth Form: The final
stage of our educational journey is
designed for intellectually curious and
ambitious young adults. Here, small
class sizes and expert teaching are
complemented by a robust co-curricular
programme, fostering both academic
success and personal growth.
This partnership is much more than
a simple rebranding—it embodies our
shared vision of educational excellence
and holistic student development. By
combining our strengths, we provide a
seamless educational experience from
nursery through sixth form, unified by a
shared ethos and commitment to quality.
Neal Paker, Head of King Edward VI
School said, “Our partnership allows us to
further enrich the educational experience
for all our students, fostering creativity
and innovation across all ages.”
Rebecca Smith, Headmistress of KES
Prep, added, “ This transition marks
an exciting opportunity to build on
our strengths while expanding the
opportunities available to our children.”
As we embark on this exciting new
chapter, we are committed to inspiring,
challenging, and developing the next
generation of learners and leaders.
We invite our community to join us in
celebrating this new beginning and the
bright future ahead.
charcoal briquettes or firewood.
Petromax Atago, from £211
Ingredients
1 tbsp vegetable or rapeseed oil
4 pork shoulder steaks (about
750g), cut into large chunks
1 onion, chopped
1 leek, chopped
1 carrot, chopped
bundle of woody herbs (bouquet
garni) – a mix of a few bay leaves,
sage leaves and thyme sprigs
works well
1 chicken stock cube
2 tsp Dijon mustard
1 tbsp cider vinegar
2 tsp cornflour
1 tbsp honey
Method
Heat your slow cooker. Drizzle the
oil in a wide frying pan over a high
heat. Season the pork, then add to
the hot pan. Avoid overcrowding
the meat – you may want to do this
in batches. Cook until deep brown
all over, then transfer to the slow
cooker. Add the onion and leeks
to the frying pan and cook for a
few mins, until they soften. Add
a splash of water and scrape any
tasty bits from the bottom, then tip
everything into the slow cooker.
Add the carrot, herbs, stock cube,
mustard and vinegar, season, then
add enough water to just cover the
ingredients. Stir, then set your slow
cooker on low for 6-8 hrs, or high
for 5-6 hrs.
In a saucepan, mix the cornflour
and honey with 1-2 tsp of liquid
from the slow cooker, until you
have a smooth paste. Add 100ml
more liquid, bring to a simmer
until thickened, then stir back into
the casserole. Serve with mash or
dumplings, scattered with thyme
leaves.
all-important jobs done in time...
If you’re looking for a complete kitchen
replacement, you need to act quickly. Have your
design in mind and consult your designer as soon
as possible. These timelines are a rough guide:
Production Time - 3-4 weeks
Rip Out - 2-3 days
First Fix (Electrics, Plumbing) - 2-3 days
Fitting - 3-5 days
Finishing Touches - allow 2-3 days for flooring,
decorating etc
Bear in mind additional days for moving appliances,
heavier worktops (stone, quartz) which will require
templating taking about 10 days. Discuss these
timings at the time of ordering your kitchen.
Deposit Match scheme opens the
door for aspiring homeowners
in Winchester
A new Deposit Match scheme from Sovereign Network Group
(SNG) is helping buyers’ step onto the property ladder at
Knights Quarter, Winchester by doubling their deposit*...
ADVERTISING FEATURE
A recent survey from Nationwide found
that 88% of aspiring homeowners
have had their ability to save a deposit
impacted by the rising costs of living, with
more than a third (38%) being forced to
use the money they’d set aside to pay
other bills[1]. However, there is still hope
for would-be homeowners in Winchester
thanks to the introduction of a new
Deposit Match scheme at SNG’s Knights
Quarter development.
HOW IT WORKS
Through the scheme, available on any one
bedroom Shared Ownership apartment
at Knights Quarter, the buyer puts down
a deposit equal to 5% of their purchased
share value, and SNG will match it*. This
allows the buyer to reduce the amount
they borrow as a mortgage. For example,
if a buyer purchases a 25% share of a
one bedroom apartment for £68,750
they would Contact put down a Us 5% deposit of
£3,438 and SNG would top it up with
for Contact Our Best Us
for Offers Our Best
Offers
SHUTTERS*
1 3 OFF BLINDS &
an additional £3,438, taking their total
deposit to £6,876.
GET MOVING SOONER
Saving for a deposit can be a difficult
task, but at Knights Quarter deposits start
from just 5%, providing a more achievable
savings goal than the 10% deposits
typically required on full ownership
properties, helping buyers to stop saving
and start moving sooner.
LOWER MORTGAGE
REPAYMENTS
Buying a home can be a stressful time
financially. By increasing their deposit
through the scheme buyers can reduce
the amount of money they need to
borrow, which could result in lower
monthly mortgage repayments, easing
their financial commitments.
FORTIFY
YOUR HOME
National Home
Security Month Tips
As the days grow shorter and nights longer in October,
National Home Security Month reminds us of the
importance of safeguarding our homes against the
increased risk of theft and burglary. This annual
campaign, held during one of the darkest months of
the year, aims to raise awareness about home security
and provide valuable advice on how to protect our
properties and loved ones. With the cover of darkness
providing ample opportunities for intruders, it is crucial
to take a proactive approach to home security.
SECURING DOORS
AND WINDOWS
One of the simplest yet most
effective ways to protect your home
is by ensuring that all doors and
windows are fitted with high-quality
locks. Inspect your current locks to
see if they are in good condition or
if they need upgrading. Deadbolts
should be fitted to all external
doors, and windows should have
locks that are resistant to forced
entry. Consider replacing any old
or damaged windows, as newer
models often come with advanced
security features that can deter
potential burglars.
SECURITY CAMERAS
AND ALARMS
Modern security systems have
become increasingly affordable
and accessible. Installing a
comprehensive security system,
complete with cameras and alarms,
can provide an added layer of
protection. Visible security cameras
can act as a powerful deterrent,
while alarms can alert you and your
neighbours to any suspicious activity.
Consider integrating your security
system with your smartphone,
allowing you to monitor your
home remotely and receive instant
notifications if an alarm is triggered.
SECURITY LIGHTING
Security lighting is another
essential component in deterring
intruders. Motion-activated lights
placed around the perimeter of
your property can startle wouldbe
burglars and alert you to their
presence. Ensure that all entry
points, such as doors and windows,
are well-lit, as this reduces the
cover of darkness that burglars rely
on. Additionally, maintaining clear
sightlines by trimming overgrown
bushes and trees around your home
can eliminate potential hiding spots.
SHEDS AND GARDEN
EQUIPMENT
It is not only the main house that
needs securing. Sheds and other
outbuildings often contain valuable
tools and equipment that can be
tempting targets for thieves. Ensure
that sheds are fitted with robust
locks and consider installing a shed
alarm for added security. Garden
equipment and bicycles should be
stored out of sight and securely
locked to prevent easy theft.
SECURING GARAGE
DOORS
Garages are another vulnerable
point of entry that require attention.
Ensure that your garage door is in
good working order and equipped
with a secure locking mechanism.
Consider installing a garage door
defender, which can provide
additional protection against forced
entry. If your garage is attached
to your home, it is particularly
important to secure any connecting
doors with the same level of
attention as your front door.
COMMUNITY
VIGILANCE AND
INVOLVEMENT
Lastly, community vigilance can
play a significant role in deterring
crime. Engage with your neighbours
and consider joining or forming
a neighbourhood watch scheme.
Keeping an eye on each other’s
properties and reporting any
suspicious activity can create a
safer environment for everyone.
In conclusion, National Home
Security Month is an excellent
reminder to review and upgrade
our home security measures. By
ensuring our defences are robust,
we can protect our homes from the
increased risk of theft and burglary
during the darker months. Taking
these steps not only provides peace
of mind but also contributes to a
safer and more secure community.
NOTES FROM THE GARDEN
SUSTAINABLE
GARDENING
for Christmas
This year we are perhaps even more aware
of the environment and maybe how we can
minimise our own ‘footprint’ whilst still
giving our loved ones gifts that they will really
appreciate and enjoy.
With that in mind I have some thoughtful and hopefully useful
suggestions for Christmas presents.
Packets of seeds are great simple stocking fillers for kids -
colourful and inexpensive too. There are also some really clever
mini tool sets, you could even pop in a map of your garden
with a space marked on it which will be theirs to cultivate - how
exciting!
The book shops are full of fabulous titles to get kids interested
in nature - I find myself looking for a gift for a small relative, then
browsing for far too long as I see such wonderful treats!
A card with the promise of a day trip to a nature reserve or wildlife
reserve is great and gives something special to look forward to.
For slightly older children membership of the local Wildlife Trust is
a year round present. A bug hotel or bird box making kit is great
fun too. Books again, kits to make so many really innovative and
useful things for the garden and also for studying nature.
For adults a subscription to a gardening magazine, a day course
in something they are interested in, a good gardening book- so
many options.
For older people a bird feeder that they can see from their
favourite chair, a magazine subscription - even a lovely card with
a promise of a day trip to a garden centre or beauty spot is a
lovely idea.
For those struggling to maintain their gardens you could even buy
them a few hours gardening from a local gardener.
With just a little thought and care you can give presents that give
great pleasure and also last - and give nature a hand too.
How to assess the care needs of older relatives
Caring for an older relative can be
both rewarding and challenging,
particularly when their needs change
over time. Conducting a thorough
care assessment is crucial in
ensuring their safety, comfort, and
well-being. This process involves
evaluating their current living
conditions, physical and emotional
needs, and determining whether
adjustments to the home, external
support, or a potential move are
necessary. Here’s a guide to help
you navigate this sensitive process.
EVALUATING
THE HOME
ENVIRONMENT
The first step in assessing your
relative’s care needs is to evaluate
their home environment. Many older
people wish to remain in their homes
for as long as possible, so making
improvements to their living space
can often be a practical solution.
Start by considering their mobility—
can they move around the house
safely? If stairs are becoming a
challenge, consider installing a
stairlift or converting a downstairs
room into a bedrooml. Check for trip
hazards, such as loose carpets or
cluttered walkways, and ensure that
lighting is adequate, especially in
areas like the bathroom and kitchen.
Next, assess whether adaptations
such as grab rails in the bathroom,
a walk-in shower, or non-slip
flooring might help. Simple changes
like these can significantly reduce
the risk of falls, which are a
common concern for older adults.
Additionally, consider whether
assistive technology, like personal
alarms or motion sensors, could
enhance their independence while
providing peace of mind for you and
your family.
CONSIDERING
SUPPORT FROM A
CARE AGENCY
If your relative’s needs extend
beyond what home improvements
can address, enlisting the support
of a care agency might be the next
step. Care agencies offer a range of
services, from personal care (such
as help with bathing and dressing)
to domestic support, including
cleaning and meal preparation.
When choosing a care agency, it’s
essential to ensure that the carers
are trained, compassionate, and
able to provide the level of care
your relative requires.
A good care agency will work with
you to develop a personalised
care plan tailored to your relative’s
specific needs. This plan should be
flexible, allowing for adjustments
as their condition changes. Regular
communication with the agency
is vital to ensure that the care
provided continues to meet your
relative’s needs.
Agencies can even offer live-in
care, should a relative require
more continuous support, whilst
remaining in their own home. This
can be a great option if local ties are
important, or allowing couples to
stay together.
WHEN A MOVE
MIGHT BE
NECESSARY
In some cases, despite improvements
to the home and support from a
care agency, it may become clear
that staying at home is no longer the
safest or most practical option. If your
relative’s medical needs are complex,
moving to a residential care home
or a nursing home might be the best
solution. These facilities provide a
safe environment with professional
staff available around the clock.
Choosing a care home is a significant
decision and should be made with
careful consideration. Visit several
homes, talk to staff, and try to involve
your relative in the decision-making
process as much as possible. The
goal is to find a place where they
will feel comfortable, supported, and
where their needs will be fully met.
CONCLUSION
Assessing the care needs of
an older relative is a sensitive
task that requires a balanced
approach. Whether through home
improvements, support from a care
agency, or considering a move, the
priority should always be the safety,
comfort, and well-being of your
loved one. By carefully evaluating
their situation and exploring all
available options, you can help
ensure they receive the best possible
care tailored to their unique needs.
