“BECOMING”

Solo Exhibition - Maduka Onyebuchi

As a young boy growing up in his hometown in Nigeria, Maduka experienced vibrant, colourful days filled with joy

and overwhelming happiness. Mornings were brightened by the soft light of the yellow sun, casting shadows that

seemed to stretch and grow with him as he walked to school. Childhood, for him, was a time of ease and carefree

moments.

Now, as an adult, reflecting on those days and accepting them as fantasies, far removed from the complex reality

of adulthood. As the challenges of life set in, he acknowledges that life is filled with contradictions, riddles, and

puzzles, ones that only the brave can overcome. It is during this transition that individuals find their voice and

begin to embrace the challenges life presents and taking steps to forge their own path.

This new body of work captures the life story and experiences the artist has encountered through the various

stages of his life. In these pieces, he assigns a crown (Halo) to all his subjects, elevating them as Queens and Kings

in their own right with the emphasises that everyone is unique and special, possessing the strength to shape their

own destiny while facing life's challenges and working tirelessly to carve out their future.

Maduka Emmanuel Onyebuchi (b. 1997) is a visual artist living and

then he finally chose the ballpoint pen as his medium of art which

he claims to be another means of writing stories.

Title: Ego

Size: 88.9 x 76.2cm

Medium: Ballpoint pen on paper

Ego means money in Igbo language, (The Igbo people are from southeastern Nigeria in West Africa, known for their rich culture and

traditions. They primarily speak the Igbo language). Using the two meaning of ego which literally is a two side of the coin.

Money and pride, much like two sides of the same coin, represent the intertwined elements of self-worth and economic power.

Ego, rooted in pride and self-perception, often drives individuals to pursue financial success as a validation of their personal

achievements and status. Similarly, finance, with its tangible rewards and societal influence, can inflate or deflate one's ego,

shaping their sense of identity and self-esteem.

Feminism, with its core principle of equality and empowerment, shares a similar dynamic of pride and pursuit. Feminism, much like

money, is pursued for the empowerment and validation it provides. It represents a collective struggle for recognition, respec t, and

autonomy, analogous to the way individuals chase financial success for personal validation and societal standing.

Just as money can be a measure of success and a source of power, feminism aims to balance the scales of gender equality, granting

women the same opportunities and respect traditionally afforded to men. Both are driven by a fundamental desire for validatio n

and acknowledgment, be it personal, social, or economic.

The pursuit of financial success and the quest for gender equality through feminism highlight how deeply intertwined our sens e of

pride is with societal constructs. Both endeavours reflect a deeper yearning for acknowledgment, respect, and a sense of worth in a

world where value is often measured by external achievements and societal recognition.

Title: Essence Of Love

Size: 127 x 101.6cm

Medium: Ballpoint pen on paper

'Essence of Love' delves into the complex and multifaceted nature of love, portraying it as a game of endurance, vulnerabilit y, and

emotional richness. The artwork reflects how love requires patience, understanding, and sometimes the ability to overlook

imperfections. By metaphorically "pretending to be blind," individuals choose not to focus on the flaws in their partners, embracing

love in its entirety despite challenges. This willingness to ignore faults is a testament to the resilience and depth of love, showing

how enduring relationships often require an acceptance of imperfections and an openness to growing together.

In 'Essence of Love', love is portrayed as more than just passion or romance—it's a journey that enriches the soul, demanding

compromise and self-sacrifice. The artwork conveys the idea that true love is not about perfection but rather about the ability to

persist through trials and cherish the emotional connection that binds two people together. This exploration of love’s endura nce

fits within *The Art of Becoming* by emphasizing how relationships, with all their complexities, shape one's personal evolution and

ability to experience life’s deepest emotions.

Title: Gifted

Size: 88.9 x 76.2cm

Medium: Ballpoint pen on paper

Gifted explores the theme of innate talents and the fears that often accompany them, linking to the broader narrative of my

project, *The Art of Becoming*. Talents are unique gifts that set individuals apart, but many people struggle with fear and selfdoubt,

preventing them from fully embracing their potential. This fear can transform what should be a blessing into a source of

anxiety.

The pressure to live up to expectations, whether from others or oneself, often results in hesitation. Like in *The Art of Bec oming*,

where internal struggles shape one's journey, *Gifted* highlights how fear of failure or judgment can cause individuals to see their

talents as burdens. This inner conflict stifles growth, keeping people from stepping into their true selves.

Ultimately, both works emphasize transformation. Overcoming these fears requires courage and a shift in perspective. In *Gift ed*,

talents are seen not as obligations but as opportunities for personal growth and self-expression, mirroring the process of becoming

one's best self in my larger project.
